According to sources, Haywood, his wife and their two teenaged daughters took a Delhi flight from the Mumbai domestic airport on Sunday afternoon. They then took a flight to the US from Indira Gandhi International Airport between midnight and 12.30 am, sources said.
Maharashtra's Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), which had summoned Haywood for questioning on Monday afternoon, was at a loss to explain how a person under investigation in a terror case managed to slip away. In fact, this has led to speculation that the Indian government allowed him to leave the country.
The US consulate in Mumbai refused to say anything on the case citing rules. An employee of Navi Mumbai-based IT firm Campbell White, Haywood was being investigated after it was found that the terror email sent five minutes before the Ahmedabad blasts originated from his laptop kept at his Sanpada flat.
