IT’S A book with no literary merit whatsoever, but it has become the biggest whodunit of the year. Hindutva, Sex and Adventure , the bombshell Roli Books dropped on the Foreign Correspondents Club in February, is slowly detonating and shows no signs of being defused just yet.

Not only has the book caused a storm in many a wine glass at the Club by its less- thanveiled attempt to sully the reputation of the much- venerated Mark Tully, but it has also snowballed into a slang- fest over the identity of the author, who has taken recourse to writing under the frustratingly cryptic pseudonym, John MacLithon.

The author hides behind a smokescreen to weave together a quickie novelette that at best deserves the Bad Sex Award, for the tantric sex romps of its Hindutva- loving protagonist, Andrew Luyt, a foreign correspondent posted in India whose character is a gross misrepresentation of Tully’s long stay in India.

MacLithon too has an intriguing and suspiciously familiar author- bio: he describes himself as a foreign correspondent who holds the profound belief that India should have pride in its Hindu base. He claims to have interviewed six Indian prime ministers and dodged bullets on the India- Pakistan border. And, like Tully, he lives in Delhi with his partner.

India did well in averting a crisis of war following the dastardly attack on Mumbai on 26/11. Now it is time to teach Pakistan a lesson. No future ties with the merchants of death. No sporting and cultural ties. This may sound hawkish but then it is necessary to tell the people across the border that India would be serious about snapping all ties with them as long as the terror camps exist there. Until Pakistan completely dismantles all the terror camps, arrests all the leaders of the banned outfits, and dismantles all the infrastructure of terrorists, India would not agree to any ties, leave alone cricketing ties. All other sporting and cultural ties would also be snapped. We do not need such contacts with those people who come and enjoy our friendship and hospitality but behind the back, plan terrorist attacks. India should also ban all Pak players from participating in IPL and ICL also. Such pressures are essential to force Pak to see the reason and the gravity of the situation. The public anger in India is such that we would not like any kind of ties with a nation that harbours so much ill will and animosity against India. Moreover there is no point in sending a team to play, when their non-state actors are busy planning terror attacks in India. Apart from loss of life and property, it has shaken the very conscience of the nation. Indians have demonstrated unprecedented unity in aftermath of the attack. It is therefore advisable to Pak to come out clean with more actions to win India's friendship and sporting ties as well. This is the strongest message India would like to send to Pakistan. We do not want them to take India for granted.

We must also disabuse ourselves of the notion that all these terror problems have arisen as a result of the so-called unresolved Kashmir dispute. More than Kashmir, it was the creation of Bangladesh in 1971 and the surrender of more than 90,000 Pakistani soldiers that rankles the mind of the Pakistani military establishment. They hold us responsible for their dismemberment and humiliation and feel that but for India's intervention they could have ruthlessly suppressed the Bangladeshi disaffection and aspirations.

At the same time they are conscious of the result of three conventional wars and do not have the bile for another direct encounter. On the other hand, they can take satisfaction that by the stratagem of proxy wars in the guise of terrorism, they have been able to inflict greater damage on India. According to this strategy the action is directed at destroying India from within, which means using Indians to carry out the operations without risking their own blood and infrastructure.

A terror email claiming responsibility for the Ahmedabad bomb blasts was sent to some private news channels on July 27 from Haywood's computer's internet protocol (IP) address. Haywood had denied his involvement and police suspect that his IP was misused by someone to send the mail.

Sources from the anti-terrorism squad (ATS) said that Haywood and his neighbour, Raheem Shaikh (name changed), were subjected to the forensic tests on Wednesday. Shaikh, chief executive officer in an MNC, was allotted a flat by his company on the 15th floor of Gunina apartment in Sanpada, Navi Mumbai.

Haywood too stays on the same floor. On Tuesday Shaikh's two cousins were subjected to these tests along with Rajesh Borkar, a VSNL technician. Six others, who live within the WiFi range of Haywood's flat, will be subjected to the forensic tests on Thursday.

The ATS had earlier recorded the statements of all the 12 persons. "They have given statements according to their wish. We are not conducting narco analysis test where an injection is given to bring the subject in semi-conscious state where he does not have control on his mind," said a senior ATS officer. Shaikh, the sources said, has not moved into the flat and is busy doing up the interiors of the flat for the past month. One of his cousins worked in a company in Libya for three years and returned to India in 2007. The other cousin works as a marketing executive and has his office in Malad. The duo stays in Vasai and would visit their cousin's flat in Navi Mumbai to check on the interior work.

The management aspect of terrorism in India simply addresses the issues at a very superficial level. Management of terrorism may be more successful at one point of time-space and a failure at the other -- but effective, or otherwise, management cannot transform structures in the society that make poor Muslims in India easy cannon fodder for international terrorist groups. What we need to tackle, instead, is the problem at its roots.

How different is India from a typical failed state? Political leaders, who carry out chariot processions spreading hate, leaving behind a trail of riots, leading, engineering and inciting mobs to demolish mosques, roam free in our society. Political leaders who lead and facilitate genocide/massacre continue to remain in power.

To be a successful state, the rule of law should prevail and criminals, whether they engineer riots or kill innocent people by carrying out bomb blasts, should be treated as criminals. Even as Serbian leaders/criminals are being tried in the international courts and put behind bars, for similar crimes they committed in the past, criminals in India remain above the law. Are we living in a civilized society?
