Promoting Peace, Unity, and Moral Values through Literature

By Dr Zafar Darik Qasmi, New Age Islam 6 October 2025 Abstract: The article stresses the need for literature and research based on honesty, balance, and love. True literature reflects its time by presenting fair analysis of social, political, and cultural issues. Prejudice, blind devotion, or hatred in writing spreads division, while fact-based and sincere work promotes peace, tolerance, and intellectual growth. Today, many writings ignore proper research, relying on emotions or secondary sources, which misguides society. To build harmony, writers, researchers, and thinkers must create literature that respects human relationships and strengthens social unity. Only love-based and positive literature can counter hatred and guide society towards peace and understanding. Main Points: 1. True literature reflects society through honest, balanced, fact-based analysis. 2. Prejudice and hatred in writing create division and social unrest. 3. Research must rely on primary sources, not secondary references. 4. Positive and fair analysis builds harmony, peace, and intellectual growth. 5. Love-based literature strengthens unity and respects human relationships deeply. ----- Any piece of literature or writing from any period can only be called balanced and a reflection of sound thought when it presents a fair and accurate analysis of the conditions of that time, regardless of the area of life it concerns. It should represent the movements and ideologies present in society without any distinction of religion or community. It should also address political issues and their outlines in a serious manner. In this context, it can be confidently stated that in order to present a positive and balanced analysis of the present, it is necessary that the past has been examined truthfully. At the same time, to prepare society for the future, the present must also be correctly analysed. Keeping this principle in mind, one can look at the whole of history and all social and communal issues. It becomes clear that even today, many knots of history remain unresolved, and these become a cause of division within society. Sometimes such disagreements are not only on academic or research grounds but also lead to unrest, narrow-mindedness, and a lack of open thinking. From this point, prejudice and intolerance begin to grow. Therefore, if we want to give society a positive message, it is essential to research any event or news thoroughly. If it is related to the past, then we must study the ideas and thoughts presented by thinkers and intellectuals about it. Only after this process is completed can any opinion, criticism, analysis, or objective study be presented to society. Analyses and comments carried out in this manner foster peace, tolerance, and broad-mindedness in society. Civilised nations and people of intellect and art are usually those who organise and systematise their intellectual resources. In their writings, works, and research, they adopt facts, evidence, and logical methods. We know very well that analyses, comments, or ideas that create doubts and suspicions in society cannot deliver a positive message. The tragedy of our times is that most analyses today are not based on facts but are dominated by emotions, hatred, or blind devotion. What is needed is that any analysis, regardless of the aspect of life it deals with, should not contain bias, prejudice, hatred, or lack of research. Society is a living reality, and its changes are also part of its life. Any changes that occur in society can only be properly analysed when we are fully aware of the circumstances. If an analysis is carried out without proper awareness, or with a pre-determined idea, its results are always disappointing and negative. On the other hand, analyses based on consciousness, awareness, and sensitivity bring positive thinking and ideological stability to society. They give society an academic and research-based spirit, broaden the horizons of thought, pave the way for peace and unity, and help remove misunderstandings caused by ignorance. The field of knowledge and research requires honesty and integrity. The question arises: do we follow such practices in our society today? The truth is that modern research, whether in the fields of religion, sociology, ethics, or politics, no longer maintains the standards and values of research as they should. It is often seen that researchers do not return to the primary sources; rather, they rely on secondary references and try to manage with them. This attitude is not correct for researchers, nor can it give society the right message. If we really want to bring intellectual, practical, and ideological reform into society through the spirituality of knowledge and research, then we must review and reconsider the traditional and superficial methods currently in practice. Researchers, analysts, columnists, and authors should remember that proper research and positive thinking have profound effects, and society can fully benefit from their spiritual sweetness. On the other hand, if research is carried out with prejudice, narrow-mindedness, or negative thinking, then its impact on society will be equally harmful. We also see that the works of those writers and thinkers who maintained balance and moderation in their analyses are still alive today. Whether an analysis is of a book or of a social movement or ideology, if it is not done with awareness, sensitivity, and sincerity, it cannot be called true analysis. To put it another way: if you review a book while already holding affection or hatred for the author, then your review will not be balanced. In the same way, the analyses being made today in India about the current government and Muslims are often flawed and insincere, because a pre-formed opinion is being carried forward—only the style of presentation changes. As the world is advancing rapidly in inventions and discoveries, so too are the tools of research and investigation multiplying. Finding material has become easier, but honesty is not being applied in its use, which is most regrettable. In this changing world, the only thing that can keep us on the right path is our balanced intellectual approach and analyses that guide society towards reflection and deeper thought. The need for sound and constructive literature is undeniable. Therefore, to promote harmony and tolerance in society, we must produce and promote literature that respects human relationships and strengthens society both intellectually and ideologically. Today, social and communal bonds are being broken rapidly, and instead, literature filled with hatred, enmity, prejudice, and narrow-mindedness is being promoted. This is an extremely dangerous trend. To save ourselves from this, we must actively encourage and expand literature based on love, so that people can live together in peace and mutual respect. Literature reflects human life, emotions, thoughts, and experiences. But when literature is connected with the spirit of Islam, it not only highlights noble values on an intellectual and creative level but also becomes a means of guiding human life in the right direction. Islamic literature is that which, in the light of the Qur’an and Sunnah, provides guidance for human life, promotes moral values, and reminds people of the true purpose for which they were sent into this world. The greatest importance of Islamic literature is that it turns human beings towards the recognition of the Creator and devotion to Him. The Holy Qur’an itself is a unique literary masterpiece that is the highest example of eloquence and expression, and at the same time, it fills the human heart and mind with guidance and certainty. Inspired by the Qur’anic style and the teachings of the Prophet (PBUH), Islamic literature presents ideas that call humans back to their real identity and responsibilities. Another aspect of Islamic literature is that it plays a vital role in moral reform and spiritual training within society. Today, human beings are caught up in materialism, selfishness, and the race for worldly success. In such a time, Islamic literature reminds them that the real goal of life is not only worldly achievement but success in the Hereafter. It awakens the flame of faith in the reader’s heart and inspires him to do good deeds. In this way, it helps in the moral development of both the individual and society. Islamic literature not only strengthens moral values but also builds human relationships. It promotes justice, fairness, brotherhood, sacrifice, love, tolerance, and humanity. When a Muslim writer creates, his aim is not just to display art, but to awaken the hearts and minds of readers and encourage them to become better human beings. In addition, Islamic literature preserves culture and civilization. It connects us with our Islamic history, the sacrifices of our elders, and their intellectual and spiritual heritage. Through Islamic poetry, prose, sermons, and writings, we find a treasure of faith and certainty that enriches generations. In this sense, Islamic literature not only refreshes the memory of the past but also beautifies the present and shows the way to a brighter future. In short, the importance of Islamic literature lies in the fact that it connects people with their Creator, builds moral character, promotes social harmony, and protects cultural heritage. It is a lamp of light that removes the darkness of ignorance and guides humanity towards true success. This is why Islamic literature should not be seen only as an intellectual or creative activity, but as a spiritual and moral responsibility. Islamic literature is, in fact, a mirror in which a Muslim can see his true identity, his destination, and the remembrance of his Lord. ----- Dr. Zafar Darik Qasmi is an author and a New Age Islam Regular Columnist.
