UN panel probes Pakistan army's role in Bhutto murder

In a new twist, the UN Commission, probing into the assassination of Pakistan's former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, is now suspecting involvement of Pakistani soldiers in the plot.

Pakistani officials said they were searching for four military personnel who had disappeared just before the suicide attack on Bhutto during an election rally in Rawalpindi in December 2007.

The missing soldiers were retired army personnel who were among the eight army men related to the main accused and a proclaimed offender in the case Ibad Ur Rehman, interior ministry officials said.

The investigators were facing difficulties in determining the exact status of these soldiers and so far no record had been provided. The four other soldiers are still serving the army, the officials told DawnNews.

The four missing army personnel had never been mentioned before in the legal proceedings.

Pakistan had sought a UN probe a year ago after its own investigations and those by Scotland Yard failed to make headway into Bhutto's killing Dec 27, 2007 in a gun and bomb attack as she left a political rally in the garrison town of Rawalpindi.

The four-member probe commission which was constituted in June last year is expected to submit its report by the end of this month.

The margin of his victory this time was said to have been so huge as to obviate a run-off, unlike in 2004 when he secured his first mandate for the post. In such a setting, Yudhoyono’s challengers disputed the results of the latest “quick counts”. The electoral authority’s official result was still unavailable by July 20.

Despite this, the general view among political pundits and other politically savvy sections was that Indonesia’s post-Suharto democracy had come of age on July 8. It was this sense of a political “awakening” that the July 17 terrorist attacks, which claimed nine lives and injured 50 persons, served to undermine, at least for a while. So much so, questions were raised even in official circles about the possibility of links between these attacks and the country’s newly evolving political process. In televised comments, Yudhoyono said those behind the attack should be punished, regardless of their political links, if any.

The main focus of the investigations was on the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), a suspected South-East Asian affiliate of Al Qaeda. Gaining currency as a key line of probe was the possibility that a “breakaway JI leader”, Noordin Mohammed Top of Malaysia, could have masterminded the attack. Indonesian police officials reported that the explosives used on that day were similar to those that the faction had depended on for some earlier strikes.

Changing The Face of Makkah

Cairo- Saudi Arabia is crafting plans to expand Al-Masjid Al-Haram, Islam's holiest shrine, and redesigning the holy city of Makkah in a major project that aims to change the face of the holy city.

"The main objective of the design studies is to enrich our discourse on how we should address the future architecture of the Haram and its growth," a source close to the project told the British weekly Architects' Journal.

Saudi Arabia has assigned 18 of the world's best architects with making designs to "establish a new architectural vision" for the 356,800m2 Al-Masjid Al-Haram complex.

"These design exercises in addition to other investigations will be subject to an exhibition to his Majesty King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz by the end of the month," the source said.

The top-secret plans focus on expanding Al-Masjid Al-Haram and its surrounding area.

Under the plans, the capacity of the holy mosque will be increased in the first phase to cater for 1.5 million worshippers from only 900,000 at present.

The mosque's capacity will later go up to three million worshippers with the completion of several phases over the following five to 10 years.

Can we Trust Pakistani commitment to fight Jihadi Terrorism?

Just couple of hours after the Pakistani foreign minister’s statement, it was anything but peace.

Terrorists unleashed every piece of artillery in the heart of Mumbai to carry out the most coordinated terror attack in India and with all the evidence stacking up pointing towards the Pakistani link, where do India-Pakistan relations go from here?

Some of the men behind the attack, according to initial reports, are Pakistani nationals trained in maritime terrorism in Karachi by Lashkar-E-Toiba (LeT).

An angry India conveyed to Pakistan that it has all the evidence pointing towards the Pakistani link.

External affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee said, “The preliminary information we have received so far points to the certainty that some of Pakistani elements are involved in the activity. We ask Pakistan to arrest these people and put an end to these things.”

Meanwhile Qureshi says, “They have no face. They have no colour, no class, no creed, no religion, no nothing. They are barbarians. They are inhuman and we have to collectively eliminate them.”

Attacks in Mumbai have once again landed India and Pakistan in an embarrassing face-off.

The new lull in the relation has cemented the fear of the failure the joint Anti-terror mechanism.

Apparently, Pakistan is feeling the heat not just from India but around the world.

It is now making efforts to prove itself and is sending ISI chief to India to help in investigations.

Qureshi has continued his visit reassuring India of every possible cooperation.
