Why should a Muslim have to wear his nationalism on his sleeve?, Islam and Pluralism, NewAgeIslam.com

Islam and Pluralism
Why should a Muslim have to wear his nationalism on his sleeve?
By Najeeb Jung
Feb 20, 2010

We owe the young Muslim our trust, due process and the benefit of the doubt — so that when the horror of something like Pune happens, he can spontaneously share the revulsion of his fellow citizens without the insidious taint of guilt by association, writes Najeeb Jung.

Sixty-three years ago as Nehru spoke of India's tryst with destiny, millions of Muslims rejected the Two-Nation theory and made their choice to stay in the motherland. India was their "madare watan" and India it was where they would live and die. When people questioned their integrity and commitment to the nation and suggested they were fifth columnists, they bore the calumny patiently.

The '50s and '60s were difficult years marred by a sequence of riots where often enough Muslims were at the receiving end. Even the pluralist Nehru's commitment to a secular politics wasn't enough to curb the police's tendency to visit retribution disproportionately on Muslims in the wake of a riot. Misled by the platitudes and promises of the political elite, Muslims remained a community bereft of leaders. But a quarter of a century after partition, attitudes changed. Young Muslim boys and girls left behind the sense of alienation and exclusion that had beleaguered their parents. The partition of Pakistan in 1971 and the foundation of Bangladesh was a landmark event that gave this new generation of Muslims the strength to speak in a more modern, secular voice and to stand up for their rights, their place in the Indian republic.

Dr. Zakir Naik is spreading ignorance, Islam-supremacy, disaffection among Muslims and Hindus, Letter to the Editor, NewAgeIslam.com

Letter to the Editor
Dr. Zakir Naik is spreading ignorance, Islam-supremacy, disaffection among Muslims and Hindus

Hello, I am writing here because I want to opine about zakir naik and how he is distancing Muslims from others and vice versa. I grew up in a multicultural environment and grew up having best friends as Muslims Hindus both. I knew well that there are a lot of differences in our religions but we believed, live and let live. I don’t understand why zakir naik feels that peace can exist between Hindus and Muslims only if Hindus convert. Though he never mentions this, it’s very clear when u hear his lectures.

But what surprises and shocks me is his support for child marriages, disregard for the need of any contraception except lactational amenorrhea, disregard for the need of abortions if it’s an abnormal child like in down’s syndrome.

I am sure he has never learnt medicine the way it had to be learnt. Or else shouldn’t he know that even if a girl attains puberty at 9, her body is neither physically nor mentally ready for marriages and pregnancies. I am deeply pained to know that such a person is being followed, such a person is running a school in Mumbai. What will happen in future? Can we blame our future generation if their guide is like this? -- Ananya Menon

Islamic Personalities
Singapore University honours Abdul Kalam
By P. S. Suryanarayana

Mr. Kalam, in his acceptance speech, outlined a “21st century university vision.” The universities “have to prepare citizens of the future with a global outlook” in an ambience in which “science and technology and public policy are interrelated.”

Calling for “innovative content generation in virtual classrooms” in a world where good teachers could be found anywhere, he suggested “technological connectivity among universities” to tap this global “resource.” Noting that “a new paradigm for science and technology” was needed in this milieu, he identified tasks such as the “evolution of a clean atmosphere” by “replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy from sun, wind, and nuclear systems”; “gene-characterisation through the proteomics project for developing gene-based drugs”; multi-media applications through the mobile phone; sustainable rural development; and the understanding of natural phenomena like earthquakes and tsunamis.
