Saudi Casualties Climb In Border War With Rebels

Saudi officials say at least 73 soldiers have been killed in fighting against rebels along its border with Yemen.

Assistant Defense Minister Prince Khaled bin Sultan said on state television there were, as he described them, "73 martyrs and 26 missing" since the conflict began in November.

Saudi Arabia launched its assault against Yemen's Shiite Muslim rebels, known as Houthis, last month after the insurgents staged a cross-border incursion that killed two Saudi border guards.

Rebel leaders dispute the Saudi's assessment that the war is nearly over and accused the Saudi air force of attacking civilian targets.

Analysts worry that a prolonged war might complicate efforts to prevent al-Qaeda militants based in Yemen from infiltrating into the country.

Stability in the Gulf state is of global concern because the kingdom controls more than one fifth of the world's crude oil reserves and is a major holder of U.S. assets.

Saudi Child bride turned over to 80-year-old husband

Arab News, 27 Aug 2009

AL-LAITH, AUGUST 25 - A 10-year-old bride was returned last Sunday to her 80-year-old husband by her father who discovered her at the home of her aunt with whom she has been hiding for around 10 days. A Saudi local newspaper said the husband, who denies he is 80 in spite of claims by the girl's family, accused the aunt of meddling in his affairs. "My marriage is not against Shariah. It included the elements of acceptance and response by the father of the bride," he said. He added that he had been engaged to his wifés elder sister and that this broke off as she wanted to continue with her education. "In light of this, her father offered his younger daughter. I was allowed to have a look at her according to Shariah and found her acceptable," he said. Maatouq Al-Abdullah, a member of the National Society for Human Rights (NSHR), said there is no system in place regulating the marriage of young girls, something that he said results in adverse psychological, health and social effects. "Such marriages are considered a gross violation of charters on the rights of children, which the Kingdom has signed and which set the age of adulthood at 18," he added. (ANSAmed).

The original Hindu Rashtra
By Ramachandra Guha

Although he could not come, King Mahendra sent a message to be read out at the RSS meeting held in Nagpur on Makar Sankranti, January 14, 1965. Nepal, said the king, “has always acted as a sentinel of India. Both have almost the same culture and both are animated by the same ideal of life… This is a matter of glory for the entire Hindu world”.

The king continued: “It is our desire to build up Nepal as an ideal Hindu Kingdom in the eyes of the world from every point of view... Even in days when some Hindus were victims of an artificial atmosphere and were ashamed of calling themselves Hindus, Nepal securely maintained herself as a Hindu Kingdom. All Hindus should take special pride in this fact.”

The reading of the king’s message was followed by the speech of the Sarsanghchalak. This was even more effusive in its praise of the Hindu essence of the Himalayan State. Nepal, said Golwalkar, “is the only State that proudly proclaims itself a Hindu Nation. Nepal, treading the path of her own genius, has rejected Western and other types of democracy and has adopted the time-honoured panchayat system of Hindu Democracy... Surely, Nepal finds a pride of place in the hearts of Hindus all over the world”.

The British Need Human Rights as much as Do Libyans

By Nick Clegg
Deputy Prime Minister of United Kingdom
25 August 2011
While British governments have called for greater human rights abroad, they have too often belittled them at home.
Libya stands on the brink of a new future, one that holds out the promise of democracy and freedom after 40 years of oppression. One of the most important tasks facing the interim government is the prevention of reprisals. That is why David Cameron and I have urged the National Transitional Council to exercise restraint and respect for human rights.
