How many deaths will it take till a man knows that too many people have died, Bob Dylan had once asked, and he found the answer blowing in the wind. Indeed how many more terror attacks must India sustain before we realise that we have bled enough? How many times must we warn Pakistan that retribution will be swift and immediate the ‘next time’ there is an attack on Indian soil? For how long will New Delhi employ diplomacy, coercive or otherwise, to get Islamabad to crack down on anti-India terror modules? How long will it be before a citizen of this country can move around freely without the fear of not returning home alive? The New Year has arrived without too many answers.

Admittedly, the terror bloodbath in India began two decades ago but 2008 will go down as a year that witnessed the most brazen assault yet on our social and democratic fabric. With devastating terror attacks ravaging the length and breadth of this country, citizens were served gory reminders, through the year, that terror has come to cohabit with them, that they are never too far out of danger’s way. After at least 12 major terror attacks last year, the common man now knows that terror is no longer limited to far-off Jammu & Kashmir. It is not even limited to certain sections of the country or society. After Mumbai, terror has come to haunt each one of us as a force that can attack more than crowded middle-class bazaars, places of worship or even local trains. Today every corner of this country is on the terrorist’s radar.

We are Indians first and stop blaming mussalmans and others for terror. I have a large number of Muslim friends and I know Muslim society in India is uniquely different and as patriotic as any other Indian. And they don't need any certificate from any one. But at the same time we must not hesitate to recognize that terrorism in India is pronounced essentially Islamic in its character and the aim is to have a so called Nizam-e-Mustafa wreaking revenge against Hindus. The Deoband's denouncement of terror is not enough. Their dictates must show an impact on Islamic terror outfits, otherwise its papers and faxes would remain nothing more than a crude PR exercise. It's the bounden duty of Muslim leaders to make it sure and visible that those involved in jihadi barbaric attacks are condemned as un-Islamic and are practically declared non-Muslims like they have done with regard to many others in the past.

A nation's collective will is the biggest weapon against fissiparous tendencies. The US and China have shown that. They too faced Islamic terror, but handled it with a resolve that got united support by the people and all shades of political colours. Indians can fight each other on a hundred issues of political programming or power grab. But on the question of our sovereignty and security we must stand united, as one – and it must be visible too. After all, where would all these leaders take their money and enjoy it if India doesn't survive? Even to enjoy the loot they must have a station to leisure and be free of threats. To say this is too rude and crude, yet, seeing the Jaipur, Bangalore and Ahmadabad blasts, what can a citizen pray for? Security and a collective will to converge on national interest.

Islam and Nationalism: would it be a good idea for Indian Muslims to develop a sense of pride in Indian nationalism?

Debate points:

By Sultan Shahin, Editor, New Age Islam

Indian Muslims’ pre-Islamic Indian heritage is unparalleled. Is there something in Islamic ideology that would stop us from feeling nationalistic Indians at the same time as we feel pride in being Muslims? If so, are other Muslims right in being so fiercely nationalistic? Arabs, for instance, are nationalistic to the point of being racists. You live in their land a hundred years, serve them with utmost diligence, adopt their language, religion, culture, way of life: they won’t even give you so much as a Green Card, not to speak of citizenship. Why should an Indian Muslim’s Indian history then begin with Mohammad bin Qasim’s invasion of Sindh and his world history begin at the point Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) arrived on the scene in Arabia ? Is it time for us to claim our Vedic Heritage, while still being good Muslims, indeed trying to be better Muslims than we are?
