Indian diplomat in Pakistan arrested for spying, Islamic World News, NewAgeIslam.com

Indian diplomat in Pakistan arrested for spying

A senior Indian diplomat of the level of second secretary in the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, has been arrested for passing on Indian state secrets to Pakistan for two years.

IFS Group B officer Madhuri Gupta was working in the press wing of the Indian High Commission, according to intelligence sources. It is unlikely that she was a lone spy operating on her own. But there is so far no confirmation of any others arrested or interrogated.

The internal security establishment is extremely cagey about the role of Indian diplomats abroad. The four independent anonymous sources, who confirmed this information to TV channel Times Now, were reluctant to reveal exactly what kind of information the alleged mole was privy to. However suffice to say for now that the officer may have been on the pay-role of the Pakistani establishment, and was allegedly passing on crucial strategic information belonging to Pakistan.

The Ministry of External affairs sources said an official statement will be given out the complete facts in the case. However sources did mention that Gupta, who is also believed to be an Urdu interpreter and a staffer for 30 years who has served in Delhi, Kuala Lumpur and Islamabad, has confessed to the crime.

This is the first-ever case of a senior Indian diplomat being arrested for such a crime. What is more, Indian agencies believe that the 45-year-old is just a part of a massive Pakistani spy ring and there may have been others in the Indian diplomatic establishment also engaged in counter espionage. Currently the exact nature of the inducements to Gupta for her services is not known.

Islamic Culture
FROM PAKISTAN, WITH LOVE: Thank you, Bollywood
By MONI MOHSIN

Nonetheless, I learnt much. I watched with interest the portrayal of social tensions and religious differences. I revelled in the music and the poetry. I absorbed the fashions, the social mores, the manners, the customs. Thanks to Bollywood, I learnt that there were taxis in India, that women drove, attended college and that some people had nice houses and, equally important, some not.

Meanwhile, since the Pakistani film industry was in the doldrums, there wasn’t much of note crossing over from our side. The exceptions were Pakistani television serials. When visiting Delhi I’d regularly be asked by friends to bring videos of “Tanhanyian” “Dhoop Kinara” and “Ankahi”. But I guess their outreach was limited and the sorts of people who got to see these already knew that Pakistani women attended college.

Now Blasts in Ahmedabad: Lashkar Taking jihad to the rest of India
26 July 2008

After the October 29, 2005 serial blasts in Delhi, the Delhi police was convinced that the Lashkar-e-Tayiba, the Pakistan-based terrorist organisation, was responsible for the multiple acts of terrorism, which killed 63 people and injured hundreds more.

The Mumbai police suspect the Lashkar's hand in the July 11, 2006 serial blasts on Western Railway trains, which killed at least 200 people and injured over 700 others.

The police investigation after the Delhi blasts reveal that the Lashkar continues to grow menacing in the Kashmir valley despite the Indian Army's robust resistance. The Lashkar, a highly secretive organisation, is opposed to the India-Pakistan peace process and is determined to abort it.

Syria differs with anti-India resolution of OIC, says Assad

Underlining that India enjoyed an excellent rapport with all Middle East stakeholders, including the United States and Israel, as well as the Arab nations, Al-Assad said it gave New Delhi credibility to play a key role in the peace process. "India has good relations with both the US and Israel and anyone who wants to play a role has to have that credibility. India has that credibility because of its traditional support for the Arab cause as well as good relations with Israel," he said.

Full of praise for India, Al-Assad pointed out that New Delhi had always supported the Palestine cause and never ignored its traditional friendship with the Arab world, even while pursuing better ties with the US and Israel. "This is why we feel India, like Turkey, is well-placed to play a role in the Middle East peace process," he said.

In the recent past, Turkey has hosted several rounds of talks between Syria and Israel. Describing these talks as "a positive development", Al-Assad said Israel's offer to hold talks with Lebanon and its truce with the Hamas offered a glimmer of hope for peace in the region. "We hope India will encourage Israel to actively take part in these pace talks," he said.
