Vande Mataram Controversy and Fatwa of Darul Uloom, Deoband
A Frank analysis of the Fatwa over the controversial song composed by Bankimchandra Chattyopaddhay
by Maulana Nadeemul Wajidi
Translated from Urdu by Raihan Nezami
A communal leader of Hindu Gujjar community of Marakpur in Deoband conducted a panchayat in the premises of Inter college and decided to organize a demonstration in Saharanpur district against the so-called anti-national attitude of Darul Uloom, Deoband and burn an effigy of the concerning organization on the 25th of Aug 2009. On that day, about 70 (seventy) people only from a village of 80 (eighty) houses gathered to demonstrate at the pre-announced site whereas their number was expected to be in thousands. It shows the majority of the Hindus are still peaceful-minded who believe in secularism and solidarity of the country. This malicious attempt was made by the supporters of the communal parties only, who keep trying to destroy inter-communal harmony by their anti-social activities. The demonstrators could only shout anti-Muslim slogans, but failed to burn the effigies as the Muslims had taken a hard stand. The district administration, too, was quite alert and sought to avert any untoward occurrence. The unholy mission was foiled but this left a few questions behind.

Young US Muslims rediscover identity via underground book
By Christopher Maag

The novel is The Catcher in the Rye for young Muslims, said Carl W Ernst, a professor of Islamic Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Springing from the imagination of Michael Muhammad Knight, it inspired disaffected young Muslims in the United States to form real Muslim punk bands and build their own subculture.

Now the underground success of Muslim punk has resulted in a low-budget independent film based on the book.

A group of punk artists living in a communal house in Cleveland called the Tower of Treason offered the house as the set for the movie.. The movie will be released next year, said Eyad Zahra, the director.Filming took place in October, and the movie will be released next year, said Eyad Zahra, the director.

"To see these characters that used to live only inside my head out here walking around, and to think of all these kids living out parts of the book, it's totally surreal," Muhammad Knight, 31, said as he roamed the movie set.

The novel's title combines “taqwa”, the Arabic word for "piety," with "hardcore," which is used to describe many genres of angry Western music.

Introspection! No, No, No, That’s Not For Us; We Are Muslims!!! Intelligence agencies should get their heads examined, the whole country should introspect!

Since 1991, after the Mandal revolution, the regional parties have played the politics of caste so exquisitely that it has uprooted the very basis of high-caste domination. Regional leaders like Mulayam Singh Yadav, Laloo yadav, Mayavati, Karunanidhi and Cahndra Babu Naidu have mastered the art of winning state elections and running state governments for years.

But you don’t need to be terrified in the present situation. Of course it is a great testing time for Muslims. But you can show the world and your enemies the power of your constitutional right in this way; you are not inclined towards terrorism. The only solution is that you should vote united against the Sangh Parivar and communal forces. If you defeat them in the coming state and general elections, then they will not be able to rise again for quite some time. You have to defeat the communal minded leaders like Patil. With this aim in mind you should vote for the backward and Dalit parties.

Kashmir: Militants lost their war. We shouldn’t let them change tactics
Losing the peace in KashmirBy Gagandeep Bakshi
Despite these pressures, security forces had succeeded in scaling down the levels of terrorist violence considerably. This year, five lakh pilgrims visited the Amarnath Shrine. Another four lakh tourists have already visited the state. With yet another well-conducted assembly election, Pakistan would have totally lost its case for Kashmir by default. However, realising that the tanzeems have largely lost the military phase of the battle, it appears that there might have been a deft shift of strategy to exploit trivial local causes and generate mass hysteria over communal issues. Poverty is not responsible: the poverty ratio in J&K is four per cent compared to 21.8 per cent in the rest of India. J&K gets eight times the central assistance that other Indian states get. J&K was getting Rs 3197 crore in 1991-92. This had gone up to Rs 8092 crore by 2001-02. Does this new approach of agitation represent a change of tactics to initiate an Intifada phase of the secessionist movement, precipitated by these figures? If so, the nation-state must be resolute, and clearly display that will and resolve, given that what is at stake is the most crucial aspect of its own ideological basis. The agenda in J&K is becoming unabashedly communal, frightening even mainstream local parties into tamely going along. There is the need to cool atavistic passions but there is equally the need to stand absolutely rock-firm on an issue which could unravel our entire nation-state itself.
