Bodies of gunmen in Mumbai attacks remain unburied, Islamic World News, NewAgeIslam.com

Bodies of gunmen in Mumbai attacks remain unburied

The bodies of nine gunmen killed during attacks on the Indian city of Mumbai a year ago are still awaiting burial.

The unclaimed bodies are lying in a local government hospital and Mumbai police say they have still to take a decision about their future.

Muslim clerics had denied permission to bury the bodies in Mumbai graveyards, saying the actions of the gunmen had "defamed" their religion.

Ten men attacked Mumbai on 26 November 2008, killing more than 170 people.

Only one gunman, Mohammed Ajmal Amir Qasab, survived and he is currently facing trial.

'Un-Islamic'

The bodies are being kept in the morgue of Sir JJ Hospital. Officials say the area is secluded and guarded around the clock. The seal is checked every day.

The question of what should be done with the dead militants arose soon after the attacks.

Pakistan flatly refused to take them despite India's argument that they should go back to the country from which they originated.

An encounter with the Taliban, Radical Islamism and Jihad, NewAgeIslam.com

Radical Islamism and Jihad
An encounter with the Taliban
By M Waqar Bhatti
July 21, 2008

The shock of glimpsing the Taliban for the first time in the Bara bazaar was unexpected, given that the area is hardly a 45 minutes’ drive from Peshawar. There was not a single security personnel present in the bazaar although government officials make daily claims of re-establishing the writ of the government and clearing the area of militants. Instead, we saw three vehicles with black flags mounted on their front and my guide told me that they were either Mangal Bagh’s men or the Taliban.

As soon as we stepped out in the market, a vendor tried to sell us prayer caps for Rs10 each. When we refused to purchase the caps, he warned us in Pashto that without the caps, we could be in serious trouble. In the meantime, the Taliban or Mangal Bagh’s men noticed two persons without prayer caps on their heads and they shouted something in Pashto and drew the attention of their other colleagues to us. Their leader in a double-cabin vehicle turned his attention towards us and said something in Pashto to my friend.

A Turkish diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, provided details about the governor’s intervention. “The embassy, after knowing that Taze is being implicated falsely, requested Prince Salman to intervene in the case,” he said. “In turn, the prince ordered local officials to speed up the trial or release the accused if there was no evidence against him.”

Taze is reportedly planning to leave the Kingdom for good.

Blasphemy Case on Appeal

Turkish officials, meanwhile, are pressing on with the issue of Bogday. President Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan have made telephone conversations with Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah about the case.
