The Gentle Power of the Sufi Tradition

Few people realize the huge impact the Sufi saints had in the shaping of philosophies in India and elsewhere and of how it defined many devotional Bhakti faiths. Its earliest inspiration may have been from the early doctrines of Buddha, especially the Abhidhamma Pitaka, and may have also later inspired the Bhagavat Gita that was much later interpolated into the constantly evolving sversions of the great legend of the Mahabharata. Even later they influenced Islamic thought and were the main contributors in bringing many people willingly into the fold of Islam.

Although Sufis are now widely considered to be a Muslim sect, their history goes back to long before the advent of Islam. When Alexander conquered Persia in 330 BC the Macedonians called Persia the `Land of the Great Sophy' after their scholars met these strange mystics. The word Sufi had originally simply meant a single length of rough unstitched woollen cloth that was to be a Man's only personal possession. It was to be the only material thing between their mortal bodies and the great cosmic spirit.

They believed that the individual could, by his own efforts and devotion, attain spiritual union with God in an ecstatic reunion. They believed that… "the human soul was an emanation of this cosmic essence and like a lighted taper is waiting passionately for its disengagement from earthly trammels to return to its only beloved.?. It was a purely spiritual faith that did not much concern itself with social or moral issues.

Muslims say goodbye to Ramadan, welcome to Eid al-Fitr, Islamic World News, NewAgeIslam.com

Muslims say goodbye to Ramadan, welcome to Eid al-Fitr

Worshippers greet and hug one another in a spirit of peace and love after the congregational prayer in celebration of one another's Eid. They later disperse to visit their families and friends, give gifts to one another and make phone calls to distant relatives to convey good wishes for the holiday. Eid lasts for three days and is generally an official holiday in Muslim countries.

Muslims around the world share in the great blessing of the tranquil and spiritual Eid morning. It is a joyous occasion of important religious significance, celebrating the increase in piety with which God blesses the world during the month of Ramadan. It is a day of forgiveness and moral victory as well as of brotherhood and unity. Muslims celebrate not only the end of fasting, but also thank God for the help and strength that he bestowed upon them throughout the month of fasting, during which they endured their fast with not only a physical but also a spiritual asceticism -- that is, they have controlled their stomachs, their tongues and their hearts, so they have successfully passed the test of servant hood. It is a time of giving and sharing.

Common greetings during this holiday are the Arabic greeting “Eid mubarak,” (May your Eid be blessed). Turks and Muslims living in areas where the Ottoman presence heavily influenced local customs say "Bayramin mübarek olsun" during Eid, also meaning “May your Eid be blessed.”

CHAPTER 1: The Tableeghi Jamaat in the light of facts and truth by Maulana Arshadul Qadri, Books and Documents, NewAgeIslam.com

CHAPTER 1: The Tableeghi Jamaat in the light of facts and truth by Maulana Arshadul Qadri
THE INTRODUCTION OF THE TABLEEGHI JAMAAT AND ITS FOUNDER
By Maulana Arshadul Qadri

The "Mehfil-e-Milad" (the meetings for describing the life of the Holy Prophet - Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) as an institution has served the great cause of Islam as a Source of education for Muslims, in cities as well as in villages and they have incorporated the brain with religion on a broad scale and nobody can deny this fact.

But this is the greatest tragedy of our age that before the introduction of press and publication, literature and newly created movements, the institution of Mehfil-e-Milad which had fulfilled the requirements of teaching Islam, for the last past centuries and had also established a history of exemplary devotion to the Messenger of Islam, was suddenly labelled by the Maulvies of the Tableeghi Jamaat as "unlawful". For reference please see the Fatawa (religious verdict) of Maulvi Rashid Ahmad Gangohi, the Spiritual Guide of Maulana Ilyas, the founder of Tableeghi Jamaat. Someone enquired: "Is it permissible to have Meelad without the Qiyam (standing) and restricting it to correct and authentic traditions?" He replied: "To hold Majlis Milad in any manner is unlawful."(Fatawa Rashidia, Vol. 2, pp/83)

So far as the preaching and propagation of Islam is concerned, Allah is a witness that it had always been the objective of Mehfil-e-Milad. And even today wherever a gathering assembles in the name of Mehfil-e-Milad, Allah knows that the Muslims are invited towards piety and good deeds only and they are never introduced to sin or corruption. But I cannot understand this mental bankruptcy that as to why the method of preaching in vogue since 14 hundred years is called openly as unlawful, but the method of preaching invented in the 14th century has been declared as the most important work!
