Muslim women stage a march against terrorism in Agra

Hundreds of Muslim women took to streets in Agra on Sunday against the terror menace.

The rally was a part of the three-day National Women Muslim Conference, which concluded at Mathur Vaishya Bhavan in Agra.

carrying banners and placards with messages against terrorism, the participant said that the aim of this march is to create awareness among women especially Muslim women against the terror menace.

Shahzad Khan, organiser of the event, said that this was a three-day campaign to create awareness among the educationally backward sections of the society.

"This campaign was to create awareness among the Muslims who are educationally backward. National Muslim Front has begun this door-to-door campaign today along with Muslim women to guide children towards education," said Khan.

Spiritual Meditations
The Nature of Monotheism
By Manzoorul Haque

Well, these are two different things and it is not difficult to understand the difference with the help of an example. I do not intend hurting the religious sensibility of any one with my example, as this is meant only to explain an otherwise complex and at the same time sacrosanct idea.

On discovery channel I had seen and I am sure most of us might also have seen the picture of a shoal of very small fishes swimming close to each other in such great tandem that they formed the image of a very big fish swimming under the ocean water (this they do in self-defence) . With less resolution of vision you would see that shoal as a mighty big fish. Only when you reach close to the shoal and see carefully you realize you are looking at a swarm of small fishes. Popular Monism signifies this kind of a structure. All spirits making into one mighty Spirit. In fact this Monism is actually Polytheism –an assemblage of gods and spirits and men and beasts and plants into - One God. But this God is not real, like the shoal.

In Islam there is no such assemblage, and the one God Islam refers to is real, Who is quite distinct from all that we can survey. There is quiddity in God; there is no quiddity in a shoal. Since the God in Islam is real, He can question us and He can question us rather severely. We humans have to be watchful, so to say, because He commands real powers. A critic and an atheist can still say that he does not see His powers or effects in the world (and so he does not accept His existence) , but a Muslim sees His powers or effects in whatever he sees around, and so he believes in His existence.

Muslim women fight for rights

In a tiny shanty in Sultan Shahi in Hyderabad's old city, a group of 10 and 15-year-old girls is drawing. One drawing makes artist and and Deccani-Urdu poet Jameela Nishat stop in her tracks.

"Isn't something missing?" she asks the 14-year-old, about the bird drawn without wings. The teenager promptly draws a cage over the bird. In the next day's class, Jameela asks them to answer "Main kaun hoon". "Nothing" was the only, and seemingly, most natural response. Jameela says she made her beginning on that note. With young girls who believed they were 'nothing'.

Across India, from Hyderabad to Pune, Lucknow to Kolkata, educated Muslim women like Jameela — artists, activists, teachers and doctors — are conducting awareness drives among poor women in Muslim slums in cities fashioning change in the subtlest of ways. Heels firmly dug in, they have their task cut out, fighting both illiteracy and political agendas to keep women illiterate. They teach hygiene, physiology, reproductive cycles on the one hand, constitutional rights on the other. They talk identity and training, doing what it takes to help impoverished Muslim women think for themselves.

"Hunar, hisab, himmat is the development agenda," says Pune-based Razia Abdur Rahim Patel who works with Muslim women across Maharashtra, having started in the early 1990s in a single slum cluster in Pune.

Now with a team of 20, Patel says skill-training, understanding basic money transactions and creating self-esteem among slum dwellers is focus. "Political leadership failed us. There's a huge gap between leaders' agenda and people's agenda. We are creating social leadership at the community level," says the 48-year-old on phone.

Anti-Semitism widespread in Muslim world

A Jan. 21 item in the Jakarta Globe from Indonesia reported a speech by Mahathir Mohamad, the former prime minister of Malaysia, at a conference in support of Al-Quds (Jerusalem).

Mahathir was quoted stating that the lack of progress by the Obama administration in ending the war in Afghanistan, or in closing the terrorist detention centre at Guantanamo, was due to the “forces in the United States which prevent the president from doing some things. One of the forces is the Jewish lobby.”

He said Jews “had always been a problem in European countries. They had to be confined to ghettos and periodically massacred. But still they remained, they thrived and they held whole governments to ransom.”

Moreover, he continued, “Even after their massacre by the Nazis of Germany, they survived to continue to be a source of even greater problems for the world.”

These despicable words are not from the tongue of any common run-of-the-mill bigot. Mahathir was the elected head of government from 1981 to 2003 of one the more economically successful Muslim-majority countries.

The former prime minister’s remarks were not some carelessly expressed random thoughts. In October 2003, Mahathir was the chairman of the Tenth Islamic Summit Conference as Malaysia hosted the more than 50-member Organization of Islamic Countries. His opening address to the assembled Muslim leaders was punctuated with bigoted references to Jews and Israel.

War on Terror
The Kingdom and the Afghan Chaos
By Mai Yamani
Feb 20, 2010

LONDON: In his quest to stabilise his country, Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai, dressed in white robes, arrived last week in Mecca on what can only be called a diplomatic pilgrimage. Although Karzai undoubtedly spent time praying at Islam's holiest site, his mission was intended to prove more than his piety.

So what diplomatic or financial gain was Karzai seeking? Why travel to Saudi Arabia at the very moment that US President Barack Obama's military surge has become operational? Can Saudi Arabia play a serious role in resolving his country's increasingly bloody conflict?

One card the Saudis can play is their severe Islamic ideology, which the Taliban shares. Indeed, the Saudis, backed by Pakistani military intelligence, nurtured the madrasas that educated the Taliban before their march to power in the 1990s.

Moreover, Saudi Arabia has been increasingly willing to use Mecca as a forum to attempt to resolve regional political disputes. In October 2006,for example, Mecca was used to host talks among Iraq's warring sectarian factions. In February 2007, the short-lived Palestinian government of national unity was created as the result of a summit there.

In October 2008, the Kingdom held mediation talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government following Karzai's request to King Abdullah, whom Karzai describes as "the leader of the Muslim world". The Taliban could not spurn an invitation to negotiate in Mecca.

Adoption In Islam: Why It Is Illegitimate

An honourable Delhi court has recently suggested during the hearing of a Muslim woman’s plea that adoption is an inevitable reality irrespective of Muslim Personal Law’s rules and regulations. It ruled that an adoptee should be given all rights equivalent to a biological child. As adoption is illegitimate is Islam, this ruling is an absolute violation of Muslim Personal Law.

The government had brought “Adoption Law” on 23 May, 1972 in Rajya Sabha with the statement of the then minister for law Mr. H.R Gokhle that it was an important step towards the uniform civil code. According to the article 13 (2) of the bill, “The adopted child would be considered like a biological child in all matters, even in the case of father’s death without a will; the adopter would be considered like his real father equivalent to a lawful biological father from the date of adoption order. The relation of adopted child with the family of his birth would be considered void and it would be considered valid with the adopter’s family from the same date.

Islamic organizations protested against the anti-Islamic ruling with all their might and Muslim Personal Law Board was formed at the historic convention held in Mumbai on 27/28 Dec.1972. After this vehement protest, this issue was temporarily kept in cold storage, but this Pandora’s box has again been opened. Our honourable courts keep attacking Muslim Personal Law Board from time to time. The issue of adoption is clarified with the following Aayat-e-Kareemah.

Muslims and Islamophobia
Swiss Compete with Saudis to Undermine Religious Freedom

The Minaret Ban in Switzerland is one of those incidents that requires some time to process because there are so many threads to the story. Switzerland is the European country that anyone thinks of when they think of neutrality and tolerance. And, yet this is exactly the place where a ban just took place which shows a deep streak of racism towards, fear of, and willingness to discriminate against the 4.5% of the population that is Muslim.

Saudi Arabia is a Muslim country that has a terrible human rights record, is an absolute monarchy, and promotes a particularly rigid and extreme view of Islam that is repressive. In Saudia Arabia churches cannot be built, and it is even illegal to meet for Christian prayers or services. As a Muslim I am absolutely in disagreement with the Saudi position on this and many other issues, and openly state those views, as have many other Muslims. However, any reform movements in Saudi will be a long time coming as the royal family has the strong support of the U.S. government. And because of this no pressure is put on them to do something about their human rights and religious rights situation.

The Saudi situation is deplorable, and yet it seems that in the heart of Europe, the most enlightened country of Switzerland is ready to emulate the Saudi’s and turn its back on the enlightenment, on the best of modernity, and join the Saudi’s by taking the first step down a road leading to a return to a past in which minorities were treated barbarically culminating in the holocaust.

A capable Muslim can become PM: Rahul Gandhi

Aligarh : Religion does not matter when it comes to becoming the prime minister and a Muslim can get the top job provided he is the most capable person for it, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said in Aligarh on Monday.

"It is not about what religion or community you come from, it is what you bring to the table, what capability you have," he said in an interaction with students of the Aligarh Muslim University.

He was replying to a question that having come a long way after Independence how much more time will it take for India to have its first Muslim prime minister.

"Today, Manmohan Singh is not the Prime Minister of India because he is a Sikh. He is the Prime Minister because he is the most capable person to do the job.

"And let me tell you something that even when you do have a Muslim prime minister, he will be a prime minister because he is the most capable person," 39-year-old Gandhi said.

He told a questioner, "You need to step up and the number of leaders coming out of your community needs to go up. You got today a Sikh prime minister that nobody would have ever imagined in a country of over a billion people that we would have a Sikh prime minister. Sikhs are a very small percentage of this country."

Gandhi said his effort was to involve people from different communities and from different parts of India in the political system.

Exhorting Muslim youths to participate in national politics in a big way, Gandhi said, "Increased participation of Muslim youths is the ideal way to take on problems not only of the Muslim community but the country as a whole."

December 2009

Given new security restrictions and internal obduracy, one of the region’s most important schools of Islam stands at a crossroads.

On a hot, humid July afternoon, 22-year-old Shah Alam is among the thousand-odd Muslim students squatting to work on their final exams in a madrasa in Deoband, in the northern tip of Uttar Pradesh. When he was 14, Alam (see pic) lost both of his arms in an accident; but he has since learned how to write with his elbows, and has enrolled in an eight-year course to become an alim, a religious scholar. He is among thousands of young Muslim men, from diverse ethnic, geographic and linguistic backgrounds, who have come to school in the small town of Deoband, to study various aspects of Sunni Islam, including logic, Islamic jurisprudence, Quranic studies, the history of literature and the hadiths. Yet despite a century and a half of crucial education work, today Deobandi seminaries find themselves struggling to continue to fund their work, and to prove to prospective students their continued relevance.

Muslim Ummah And The Nation: A narrative to counter jihadi ideology wanted

The internet can be a highly effective channel to counter Jihadism

With a globally coordinated effort, however, the internet can be a highly effective channel to serve another important purpose. That is to activate Muslim intellectuals and moderate clerics across the world to produce and disseminate widely a counter-narrative to the violent ideology of jihadism. While some intellectuals and scholars, generally located in western societies, have written books and articles to counter the hate doctrine of the extremists, much more needs to be done within Muslim societies to counter narrow interpretations by radical clerics of Quranic texts and hadiths. This should now happen, much of it preferably in Arabic, Urdu and Pashto.

Importantly, Islam's compatibility with the ideas of democracy and the nation-state needs to be established in the minds of young Muslims. Major Nidal Hasan's case is a worrying one.

Nine Muslim Uighurs executed over Xinjiang riots

9 November 2009

Chinese authorities have executed nine people in connection with the ethnic riots in Xinjiang earlier this year, regional reports say.

Nearly 200 people were killed in July during unrest between ethnic Uighurs and members of China's Han majority in the regional capital, Urumqi.

The nine men were convicted of crimes including murder and arson, according to the state-owned China News Service.

The reports do not say whether those executed were Uighurs or Han.

But if the executions were in line with previous statements by the Xinjiang government, the group consisted of eight Uighurs and one Han.

A spokesman for the Xinjiang government said the executions had been carried out after a review by the Supreme Court.

Uighur activist Dilxat Raxit condemned the executions, saying they were motivated by politics and the need to appease Urumqi's Han community.

Justice?

The violence in Urumqi erupted on 5 July, when protests by Uighurs left at least 197 people dead and another 1,700 injured.

Shops were smashed and vehicles set alight, with passers-by being set upon by Uighur rioters.

Two days later, groups of Han went looking for revenge as police struggled to restore order.

Babri demolition: Liberhan report flays 'fanatical Muslim leadership'

While pinning the blame of the Babri Masjid demolition on Hindu rightwing groups, the Liberhan Commission has also lashed out at the 'fanatical Muslim leadership' for 'its failure to protest effectively against the events which were building up to a crescendo'.

The voluminous report, running to more than 1,000 pages, indicted 'selective Muslim leaders, obsessed with building personal or individual influence or following for enhancing their political influence for self gain'. They were 'mere bystanders' and 'put forth a dismal performance'.

'While the RSS, VHP, Shiv Sena, Bajrang Dal and the BJP brought the temple construction movement to the front burner and caused it to boil over, the fanatic Muslim leadership making the counterclaim were either completely complacent and had no substantial or effective leadership or were simply incompetent,' it stated.

Singling out the Babri Masjid Action Committee (BMAC), later the All India Babri Masjid Action Committee (AIBMAC), it said 'the Muslim leadership did little to counter the latent fears stoked up by the RSS and VHP leadership and instead provided it with the opportunity to embark on what started out as a defensive strategy'.

According to the report, tabled in parliament Tuesday: 'It is impossible to fight a war or to recruit warriors without the presence of an adversary... The Muslim leadership wittingly or unwittingly fulfilled this requirement for the founders of the RSS and the VHP.'

The Muslim leadership, the one-man commission has concluded, was 'conspicuous by its absence'.

It did little to 'counter the distortions of history that were being bandied about by the Sangh Parivar to whip up the country into a frenzy'.

Kolkata: The schools are Jewish, its students Muslim

Attired in a modest salwar-kameez , hijab firmly in place, Shaista Fatima leaves her home in Kolkata's Rippon Street and heads for school. Friends Farida and Shehnaz Jahan join her on the way and the three demurely make their way through the conservative Muslim neighbourhood.

But once they hit Royd Street, their gait acquires a quick confidence. Once inside Jewish Girls School, they slip off both hijab and salwarkameez and slip on the skirt-and-blouse uniform just in time for assembly.

The idea of Muslim students in a Jewish school may be blasphemous anywhere else on the planet, but here in Kolkata, it's a reality. In fact, doors to the two Jewish schools in the city were opened to other communities, including Muslims, around the same time that Israel was carved out of Palestine six decades ago, triggering a bloody conflict that still rages today.

It's a study in contrast really. Palestinian mothers let their children join the uprising or intifada against Israeli occupation even as Muslim mothers in Kolkata send their wards to schools run by Jews. The former is about death - it's an honour if the child kills a Jew and brings martyrdom if he is killed in the attempt. The latter is about the hope of a better future.

For most middle-class Muslims in Kolkata, getting their children into a good English medium school is a dream. "Either the fees are too high or kids are refused admission because the parents aren't educated enough," says M H Iqbal, whose daughters Zeb and Uzma go to the Jewish Girls School. "The two Jewish schools, on the other hand, are affordable and encourage children from humble backgrounds. For people like me, it means a decent education for my daughters that will open up a world of opportunity."

War on Terror
Bad guys are still not tired of fighting war
By Thomas L. Friedman
October 5, 2009

If that doesn’t send a little shiver down your spine, how about this one? BBC.com reported that “it has emerged that an Al Qaeda bomber who died last month while trying to blow up a Saudi prince in Jeddah had hidden the explosives inside his body.” He reportedly inserted the bomb and detonator in his rectum to elude metal detectors. My God.

Or how about this? Two weeks ago in Denver, the F.B.I. arrested Najibullah Zazi, a 24-year-old Afghan immigrant, and indicted him on charges of planning to set off a bomb made of the same home-brewed explosives used in the 2005 London transit bombings. He allegedly learned how to do so on a training visit to Pakistan. The Times reported that Zazi “had bought some bomb ingredients in beauty supply stores, the authorities said, after viewing instructions on his laptop on how to build such a bomb. When an employee of the Beauty Supply Warehouse asked about the volume of materials he was buying, he remembered Mr. Zazi answering, ‘I have a lot of girlfriends.’ ”

These incidents are worth reflecting on. They tell us some important things. First, we may be tired of this “war on terrorism,” but the bad guys are not. They are getting even more “creative.”

Second, in this war on terrorism, there is no “good war” or “bad war.” There is one war with many fronts, including Europe and our own backyard, requiring many different tactics. It is a war within Islam, between an often too-silent Muslim mainstream and a violent, motivated, often nihilistic jihadist minority. Theirs is a war over how and whether Islam should embrace modernity. It is a war fuelled by humiliation — humiliation particularly among young Muslim males who sense that their faith community has fallen behind others, in terms of both economic opportunity and military clout. This humiliation has spawned various jihadists’ cults, including Al Qaeda, which believe they have the God-given right to kill infidels, their own secular leaders and less pious Muslims to purify Islam and Islamic lands and thereby restore Muslim grandeur.

Taqlid Versus Tajdid-A Malaysian Mufti on the Metholology of Islamic Reform

By Yoginder Sikand

The actual scope of the shariah in terms of enforceable law in Malaysia is strictly limited, mainly to family matters and to some crimes involving Muslims. In such matters, official muftis are supposed to issue opinions or fatwas in accordance with the established prescriptions of the Shafi' school, which is the school of jurisprudence followed by most Malaysian Muslims. In other words, they are generally expected to abide by taqlid of the Shafi' school. Yet, despite being the official Mufti of a Malaysian state, Zainul Abidin makes clear his uneasiness with the doctrine of rigid taqlid, presenting the concept of tajdid or renewal of the faith in its stead. In this way, he argues for reintroducing what he regards as the lost dynamism of Islamic jurisprudence in order to be able to suitably address new and rapidly social contexts and conditions. He may well be unique among the muftis of Malaysia in this regard, all of who are state-appointed. This is one reason why he is often quoted with approval by numerous 'progressive' Malaysian Muslim writers and activists.

Building of Churches is 'Sin' Against God: Egypt Muslim Council

Students, both Muslims and Christians, were taught "it is forbidden for a person to donate money for what would lead to sin, such as donating in his will money towards build[ing] a church, a nightclub, a gambling casino, towards promoting the alcohol industry or for building a barn for rearing pigs, cats or dogs."

Gabraeel asked the council what the sharia (Islamic law) position on the statement found in the textbook is. He asked if it is forbidden for a Muslim to donate money to build a church or a monk's quarters even if it is in the name of God and Christianity, which is recognized by the country's constitution. The Egyptian constitution claims to respect religious freedom. He also noted that wealthy Coptic Christian businessmen have donated towards the building of mosques.

The council replied by affirming the law found in the textbook and issuing a fatwa on it.

Included in the fatwa is an explanation on why it is a "sin" to build a church. According to the fatwa, Christians believe salvation is achieved through belief in Jesus as Lord while Muslims don't. Muslims believe that Issa [Jesus in Arabic] "is a slave of Allah and His Messenger, and that Allah is one."

The Islamic edict said God did not have a son and that Christianity deviated from absolute monotheism. Therefore, a Muslim is forbidden to donate funds towards a building that does not worship Allah alone.

The author of the textbook, Mohammed el-Maghrabbi, said it is sinful for even a Christian to devote money in his will towards building a church because it would be considered in Islam as separation from God.

In other words, it is illegal for even non-Muslims to offer money in their will towards building a church or synagogue.

Muslims and Islamophobia
Love and Marriage as part of Islamic Jihad or a Hindutva conspiracy?
By Shakeel Shamshi
Translated from Urdu by Raihan Nezami

This controversy started when two Muslim students of M.B.A fell in love with two Hindu girls studying in the same college in Trivandrum. The evolution of such delicate emotional relationships over time among college students is no bolt from the blue, but in this case its consequences were atrocious. This affair led to the expulsion of the Muslim students on the ground of creating trouble in college premises. This intimate relationship continued even after leaving the college, ultimately the girls left their parents’ house to live with their lovers, which commonly happens in Indian society. As usual, the Hindutva parties raised a lot of hue and cry by accusing inter-religion love-marriages as a part of an international Jihadi conspiracy to use the Hindu girls for anti-national terrorist activities.

The parents of the girls could not lodge a petition of kidnapping against the Muslim youths because the girls were adults but they filed an appeal - PIL, in a Kerala high court. The girls were sent to the parents’ house for a week in place of keeping them in Nari Niketan, and then, the nature of the entire case changed. The girls changed their statements and attitude. They may have been forced by the Hindutva forces or threatened by the parents to change their mind and statement. They deserted the Muslim boys. The girls, on the second date, asserted that they were forced for the marriage and were provided Jihadi literature in the hostel rooms by their lovers. As a matter of fact, the Muslim boys had handed over some Islamic books to the girls to study and understand Deen-e-Islam before converting to it. I would request the D.G.P of Kerala police to release to the Press the Islamic literature found in the hostel rooms or from the boys’ houses to clear all confusion.

Islamic law is law made by Muslim men for the benefit of Muslim men, Islamic World News, NewAgeIslam.com

Islamic World News
Islamic law is law made by Muslim men for the benefit of Muslim men

Islamic law is law made by Muslim men for the benefit of Muslim men, and the detriment of everyone else. It is the product of an inherently unequal system, designed to perpetuate that system.

Under it non-Muslims are inferior to Muslims because by rejecting the “truth” of Islam, they cast doubts about their moral fitness. A non-Muslim is an infidel who drinks alcohol, eats pork and has forbidden sexual relations. As far as Islamic law is concerned he is already of poor moral character and a criminal.

Women are inferior to men, as they are lower in status than men. When Mohammed declared, or was said to declare in Islamic scripture, that, “I also saw the Hell-fire and I had never seen such a horrible sight. I saw that most of the inhabitants were women”, he was articulating the top down theology of a cult that defined sinfulness in terms of position of tribal power. Therefore in the Mohammedan vision of hell, the underworld was to be populated mostly by women for their ingratitude to their husbands, who under Islam were also their masters. And slaves are defined as moral to the degree that they serve their masters.

Under the circular logic of Islam, women are second class citizens because they are untrustworthy, and untrustworthy because they are second class citizens. This makes women automatically suspect of all sorts of things.

Radical Islamism and Jihad
Obama’s world and Pakistan’s war on terror
By Praveen Swami

Even as the Second World War raged on, the General Officer-Commanding of Imperial Britain’s Indian Army Eastern Command had begun work on the making of a new nation. Hindu-majority India, Sir Francis Tucker had come to believe, was dangerously mired in “superstition and formalism;” ripe to be seized by “a material philosophy such as Communism.” For this calamity to be averted, he argued, it was “very necessary to place Islam between Russ ian Communism and Hindustan.”

By 1944, Tucker was advocating the need for “a new Muslim power supported by the science of Britain.” “If such a power could be produced,” he wrote in his memoirs, India’s Partition and Human Debasement, “and if we could orient the Muslim strip from North Africa through Islamia Deserta [sic.], Persia and Afghanistan to the Himalayas, upon such a Muslim power in northern India, then it had some chance of halting the filtration of Russia towards the Persian Gulf.”

Pakistan lived up to Tucker’s hopes, allying itself with the anti-Communist powers during the Cold War and offering its services to the United States of America’s war-by-proxy against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan.

Now, the enemy flies the stark, black-and-white banners of the al-Qaeda and the Taliban but Tucker’s vision of Pakistan continues to influence the geo-strategic imagination of the U.S. policy establishment.

Why I left Islam? An Ex-Muslim Convert from Belgium, Islamic Ideology, NewAgeIslam.com

Islamic Ideology
Why I left Islam? An Ex-Muslim Convert from Belgium
Dear friends,
I converted to Islam long ago. I have been raised in a very strict Catholic family and grew up in a loving environment. I always felt real good in the “Catholic "system". Even though my conversion was a very big shock for my parents, they always considered me as their beloved son. In this respect and in many other points my parents are true Christians.

Many people convert to Islam because their partner is Muslim. They think Islam is equal to Christianity plus Muhammad; a type of 2.1 version of the Windows of religion. For men like me this is because it is a (legal) obligation or necessity, to marry a Muslim woman. Women mostly convert because their partner shows so much love for his religion and the rituals (praying, fasting, ...) have a charming effect, and to come closer to their partner, they just want to join in and convert. One falls in love with the so-called Islamic atmosphere and solidarity without knowing what Islam really is about.
