Maulana Azad’s freedom struggle in Calcutta

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was one of India’s greatest leaders of the twentieth century. He was the pioneer of Urdu journalism with his newspapers Al Hilal and Al Balaagh, was known for his great oratoratorial skills, was a writer with a distinct style and a farsighted statesman who did not subscribe to the idea of Pakistan. Maulana Azad's association with Bengal particularly Calcutta is of great importance. He was born in Makkah and shifted to Calcutta with his parents when he was 11. Maulana Azad's father Maulana Khairuddin originally belonged to Calcutta but had migrated to Saudi Arabia during the tumultuous period of 1857 Revolt.
Among the leaders of the freedom movement and post Independence India, Maulana Azad had carved out a niche for himself. He was the first Education Minister of Indepent India. He made his political and journalistic debut from Bengal. He was among the leaders who together prevented the division of Bengal. He worked with the stalwarts of Bengal like Surendrananth Banerjee, Prafulla Chandra Roy, Bipin Chandra Pal, Arobindo Ghosh and others. During the Swadeshi Movement, he even delivered lectures in the Town Hall.
