Hindu Brides must convert to Islam to marry Muslims: Allahabad

ALLAHABAD: In a judgment with far-reaching implications, the
Allahabad high court has ruled that a non-Muslim bride must convert to Islam to
marry a Muslim. Failing that, the matrimony with a Muslim man would be void as
it would contradict Islamic dicta and tenets of the Quran, the court said.
The ruling on Monday by a division bench comprising Justices Vinod
Prasad and Rajesh Chandra, came on a writ petition filed by Dilbar Habib
Siddiqui. The petitioner had sought quashing of an FIR registered against him on
March 17 under sections 323, 366 and 363 of IPC with Naini PS, Allahabad and
prayed the court not interfere in his peaceful matrimonial life with Khushboo
Jaiswal. The judges directed a speedy probe into the marriage of Siddiqui and
ordered the cops to separate Khushboo Jaiswal, who was lodged in Nari Niketan,
and hand her over to her parents.
The primary question for adjudication was on whether the FIR could be
quashed or not. A perusal of the contents of the FIR indicated that Khushboo
Jaiswal was alleged to have been abducted by the petitioner three months prior
to its lodging. However, the petitioner had succeeded in preventing the FIR from
being registered. The FIR was filed by the girl's mother, Sunita Jaiswal, who
alleged that the petitioner had abducted her daughter. She contended that
Khushboo never converted to Islam and there was also no documentary evidence to
suggest so.
"In our above conclusion we are fortified by the fact that in the
affidavit filed by Khusboo herself subsequent to her alleged contract marriage,
she has described herself as Khushboo and not by any Islamic name. As Khushboo,
she could not have contracted marriage according to Muslim customs. In those
documents she has addressed herself as Khushboo Jaiswal," the verdict said.
"Thus, what is conspicuously clear is that Khushboo Jaiswal never
converted and embraced Islam and therefore her marital tie with the petitioner
Dilbar Habib Siddiqui is a void marriage since the same is contrary to Islamic
dicta and tenets of Holy Quran," the court ruled.

105 dead in Tripoli airport plane crash: security

TRIPOLI: A Libyan plane arriving from South Africa crashed on
Wednesday at Tripoli airport killing all 105 people on board, a security
official said.
Among the dead were 94 passengers and 11 crew members, the official
said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
There was no immediate indication of the cause of the crash, which
occurred as the Afriqiyah Airways plane was landing after a flight from
Johannesburg at around 6:00 am (04H00 GMT).
"All 94 passengers and 11 crew members who were on board were
killed," the official said.
Afriqiyah Airways said on its website that it operates an Airbus
fleet.
It started operations with five leased planes and signed a contract
with Airbus at an exhibition in Paris in 2007 for the purchase of 11 new planes,
the website said.
It was founded in April 2001 and at first fully owned by the Libyan
state. The company's capital was later divided into shares to be managed by the
Libya-Africa Investment Portfolio.
On April 21, the airline announced that flights were back to normal
after disruptions due to the volcanic ash cloud from Iceland that grounded
flights in Europe last month.

Muslim Sharia law under the microscope in Melksham,

An academic expert in Muslim Sharia law is holding a presentation on
the subject for women in Melksham later this month.
Amra Bone, who has worked as a lecturer in Islamic studies, will hold
a presentation introducing Sharia law and in particular Sharia family law, for
women of all faiths and backgrounds at Melksham Assembly Hall, between 10am and
1pm on May 22.
The visit is being funded by Wiltshire Council and organised by West
Wiltshire Interfaith Group.
Mrs Bone, who sits on the National Muslim Women’s Advisory Group,
will focus on aspects of family law including marriage, divorce and women’s
rights in Sharia law during her presentation, before answering questions. It is
free will have an area where children can do arts and crafts during the
talk.
West Wiltshire Interfaith Group is also organising an event called
“Caring Together for Planet Earth” to discuss challenges facing communities
across generations, cultures and nations.
The event will take place at United Church Hall, Bradford on Avon, at
7pm on May 18 and is free to attend.

LUCKNOW: Darul Uloom Deoband, the self-appointed guardian for Indian
Muslims, in a Talibanesque fatwa that reeked of tribal patriarchy, has decreed
that it is "haram" and illegal according to the Sharia for a family to accept a
woman's earnings. Clerics at the largest Sunni Muslim seminary after Cairo's
Al-Azhar said the decree flowed from the fact that the Sharia prohibited
proximity of men and women in the workplace.
"It is unlawful (under the Sharia law) for Muslim women to work in
the government or private sector where men and women work together and women
have to talk with men frankly and without a veil," said the fatwa issued by a
bench of three clerics. The decree was issued over the weekend, but became
public late on Monday, seminary sources said.
At a time when there is a rising clamour for job quotas for Muslims
in India and a yearning for progress in the community that sees itself as
neglected, the fatwa, although unlikely to be heeded, is clearly detrimental.

NEW DELHI: Prominent women have slammed as "retrograde" and
"interfering" the fatwa issued by the Darul Uloom of Deoband against women going
to work alongside men.
Reacting strongly to the decree, Anhad founder and social activist
Shabnam Hashmi said, "I don't recognize the Deoband. I think they are
interfering in Muslim women's lives. They should stick to praying." She added
that while this would not impact educated women like her, there was a certain
section in society that would have to bear the brunt of such pronouncements.
Hashmi stressed the need for a forum where liberal educated Muslims could
express themselves and be heard.

Elena Kagan, current Solicitor General of The United States and
former Dean of the Harvard Law School, exemplifies selective outrage. She knows
a lot about "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" when it comes to ROTC on the Harvard Campus,
but wears official blinders when it comes to Islamic treatment of
homosexuals.
When Professor Kagan ascended to the position of Dean of the Law
School, Harvard was in a quandary over military recruitment. Long opposed to the
military's policy towards openly gay men and women but ever solicitous of the
greenbacks offered by the federal government, the school tried to hedge its bets
on the Solomon Amendment, passed in 1994, which required the Secretary of
Defense to deny federal grants to institutions of higher learning that
prohibited or prevented ROTC or military recruitment on campus. And who better
to circumvent the law's intent than the serried ranks of lawyers in Cambridge,
Massachusetts? They argued that Washington money should still flow because even
though the college placement office was barred to recruiters, ROTC courses could
be offered by the Harvard Law School Veterans' Association.

Andrew Bostom and Robert Spencer have both recently written pieces
critical of the idea that Islamic Anti-Semitism was a product of Nazi
propaganda. As any honest reader of the Koran already knows, Islamic
Anti-Semitism, and general intolerance for non-Muslims originated with Mohammed
himself. While Mohammed had set out to replace the region's existing religions,
including Judaism and Christianity-- he only succeeded in eradicating and
replacing the majority of the local polytheistic religions. While sizable
numbers of Jews and Christians were forcibly converted to Islam, during the more
than millennium of occupation of the Middle East-- the religions themselves
survived.

Why Didn’t Obama Mention Islam?

There is a huge difference between the way the Obama administration
dealt with the recent terrorist operations and the way the administration of
former president George W. Bush dealt with similar operations. Obama’s
administration, on all levels, was eager to deal with American-Pakistani Faisal
Shahzad’s attempt to blow up a car in Times Square in New York with a lot of
deliberation and without hastily issuing statements, also avoiding any
suggestions of a link between terrorism and Islam.
After the failed terrorist attack, Obama said that his country would
not be intimidated and that the investigations will seek to determine if the
suspect in the case had links to “foreign extremist organizations.” He did not
once refer to the religion of Faisal Shahzad and avoided mentioning Islam in
discussing the terrorist operation.

protestors in the city of Andijan, experts say the Central Asian state has yet
to be held accountable for one major reason --
Afghanistan.
Members of the US-led military coalition -- eager to secure

are effectively giving Uzbekistan a free pass over the bloody incident, analysts
said.

Balochistan: a flawed policy

The situation in Balochistan has reached its lowest ebb since the
military operation that began in January 2005. The entire province is besieged:
the provincial government has been abandoned while the centre is directing
policies according to its will with the gun and the stick, terming this
‘development’ for the people’s betterment.
The establishment has itself opened up a war inside Balochistan on
all fronts. This has resulted in increasing polarisation and radicalisation of
Baloch society. Though socially and economically underdeveloped, Balochistan was
largely a peaceful province before Musharraf’s aggressive policy of what can
only be called ‘colonisation’. Regrettably today, Balochistan is marked with
nationalist, sectarian, ethnic and racial violence, which has resulted in the
killings of hundreds of civilians.

New Delhi: Alleging that cadres of the banned Students Islamic
Movement of India (SIMI) were helping foment terror through front organizations
like Indian Mujahiddin (IM),the Delhi Polices counter-terror wing on Tuesday
defended the ban on SIMI before a tribunal inquiring into the
ban.
Headed by justice Sanjiv Khanna of the Delhi high court,the tribunal
is inquiring into the ban as per a notification issued by the government.Delhi
Police have filed six affidavits before the tribunal,claiming the linkages
between SIMI and front organisations like the IM have been found after
interrogation of the accused in the 2008 serial blasts that rocked
Delhi.

Death sentence to Kasab is fair: US

WASHINGTON: The death sentence awarded to Ajmal Kasab, the lone
surviving gunman of the Mumbai terrorist attack, is a result of a fair and
transparent judicial process of India, the US has said.
"This (trial of Kasab) was part of an Indian legal proceeding.
Obviously, we have encouraged India and at times, in the aftermath, we have
assisted India with the investigation, but this was the result of an Indian fair
and transparent legal process," said Assistant Secretary of State for Public
Affairs P J Crowley.
"We have extensive cooperation with India on counterterrorism and
that will certainly continue," Crowley said in response to a question at his
daily press briefing on Tuesday.

Headscarf row: Father of expelled girl moves

Father of the 14-year-old Muslim girl who was expelled from a
church-run school in Kerala has approached a local court seeking registration of
a criminal case against the principal.
In his petition, Nasir Musaliyar, an imam with a local madrassa,
claimed expelling his daughter from the school for wearing the headscarf was
"communally provocative" and demanded principal Mary Jacinta be booked for
hurting religious sentiments.
Believers Church English Medium School has suspended Jacinta claiming
she had acted on her own.

JAKARTA, Indonesia — Five suspected Islamic militants, including one
of the most-wanted men in Indonesia, were killed Wednesday in shootouts with
anti-terror squads in raids in and around the capital, police
said.
The raids are the latest in a series since police broke up a
terrorist training camp in western Indonesia run by a new group calling itself
al-Qaida in Aceh.
National police chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri told reporters
that two fugitives, Ahmad Maulana and Saptono, were among those killed in a raid
in Cikampek, about 45 miles (80 kilometres) east of
Jakarta.

Sani Yerima, the former governor and senator representing Zamfara
state at the senate on Monday said his recent marriage to an Egyptian girl was
not a violation of any Nigerian law.
Mr. Yerima, who was answering questions from State House
correspondents in Abuja, said the marriage was contracted legally and in
conformity with Islamic injunctions.
He however dismissed the allegation that his Egyptian wife was a
13-year old girl, ``I don’t know where and how they got the age. That 13 is a
very mysterious figure.” He also dismissed the allegation that the negative
publications against him were being financed by Zamfara State
Government.
He, however, stated that his political enemies were behind the
negative media reports.

Pope: Sex scandal Church persecution

Lisbon, May 11: Pope Benedict XVI on Tuesday described the clerical
sexual abuse scandal as “the greatest persecution of the Church,” while
acknowledging it arose from sins inside the Church. He called for profound
purification and penance within the Church as well as pardon and justice.
Pope Benedict made his comments in response to a question from a
reporter on the clerical child abuse scandal as he travelled to Portugal.
The Vatican has been at the centre of a widening sex scandal in which
the clergy have been accused of child sex abuse in the United States, Ireland,
Germany, Italy and many other countries.
The Church has been criticised for attempting to blame the media and
church opponents for the escalation of the scandal which has led to the recent
resignation of bishops in Ireland , Belgium and Germany.

US drones kill 14 rebels, Pak kills 7

Islamabad, May 11: The US drones on Tuesday fired a barrage of 12
missiles in Pakistan’s lawless tribal areas killing 14 militants. The strikes
also destroyed a training camp of the extremists in North Waziristan, officials
said. It was the second strike in the same mountainous area close to the Afghan
border since Sunday, when the United States accused the Pakistani Taliban of
being behind a plot to detonate a car bomb in Times Square 10 days ago.
The training camp was run by militants attached to Taliban-linked
Afghan warlord Hafiz Gul Bahadur, who is reputed to control up to 2,000 fighters
who attack US-led forces over the border in Afghanistan. The compound was in the
Lowara Mandi area of North Waziristan district, seen as a fortress of Taliban
and Al Qaeda-linked militants in Pakistan’s tribal
badlands.

French Parliament lays groundwork for veil ban

France’s Parliament will vote on a resolution aimed at reaffirming
the nation’s values — and specifying that Muslim veils that cover the face are
contrary to gender equality. The resolution lays the groundwork for a law
forbidding face-covering veils everywhere in public.
The nonbinding resolution amounts to a policy statement and is widely
expected to win approval in a vote Tuesday night in the National
Assembly.
The next step will be discussion of a draft law on banning burqa-like
veils in public.
The Government is still drafting that Bill, which is more divisive
than Tuesday’s resolution.
President Nicolas Sarkozy is pushing for a full ban. Only a tiny
minority of Muslim women in France cover their faces.

Kasab may be hanged by yearend

New Delhi, May 11: Union law and justice minister M. Veerappa Moily
on Tuesday stated that Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Amir Kasab, who has been
sentenced to death in the 26/11 Mumbai attack case, could be hanged within a
year.
Speaking to a television channel, the law minister stated that if
Kasab appealed against his death sentence then it would be fast tracked and the
Pakistani terrorist would be hanged in a year’s time. “Even if the case goes in
appeal, it will and should be fast tracked. Kasab will be hanged in next one
year. He committed a barbaric act in front of so many witnesses,” Mr Moily said
on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Union home secretary G.K. Pillai also stated today that
Kasab may be hanged by the end of this year provided there is no legal
bar.
“If there is no petition from him (Kasab) challenging the sessions
court verdict in the higher court... He can be hanged by the year-end,” Union
home secretary G.K. Pillai told a television news channel. When asked about the
status of Parliament attack case convict Afzal Guru’s mercy petition, Mr Pillai
said, “It is with the government for consideration.”

US tries to win Karzai with charm

Washington, May 11: The last time Afghanistan’s President, Mr Hamid
Karzai, was in Washington — a year ago — he had to share the spotlight with his
Pakistani counterpart Mr Asif Ali Zardari, who got the bulk of the attention
from the White House, the Pentagon and the state department. The secretary of
state, Ms Hillary Clinton, even made a personal, unscheduled visit to huddle
with Mr Zardari at his hotel.
It is a far, far different visit this time around, reflecting the
Obama administration’s decision to abandon the publicly tough approach it tried
to use to pressure Mr Karzai to tackle corruption and drug trafficking in his
government.
Administration officials concluded that the strategy had backfired,
making Mr Karzai more resentful and resistant. This time, the Americans are
pulling out all the stops for Mr Karzai as part of a new charm
offensive.

Washington , May 11: In a damage control, the United States has said
that Pakistan was cooperating fully in the war against terror as it sought to
play down secretary of state Hillary Clinton’s warning to Islamabad and remarks
made by a top US General.
“I don’t think she said that,” assistant secretary of state for
public affairs P.J. Crowley told reporters when asked about Ms Clinton warning
Islamabad of “severe consequences” if a successful terrorist attack inside the
US were to be have its footprint in Pakistan. “I think she was responding to a
hypothetical question that the US, would take seriously any link to a foreign
country where there are successful terrorist attacks. She’s not singling out any
one country in particular,” Mr Crowley asserted after apparently Islamabad took
up the issue with Washington. US special representative for Pakistan and
Afghanistan Richard Holbrooke, while addressing the media, said that CBS did not
show the entire portion of its interview with Ms Clinton. “As a result, the
quotes appeared to be different than what the secretary of state actually

Iran military warned off US plane

TEHRAN , May 11: Iran’s military warned off a US reconnaissance
aircraft trying to approach Iranian naval manoeuvres, Fars news agency reported
on Tuesday.
The incident involving the two old foes happened on Monday, the
semi-official news agency quoted the armed forces chief as saying.
Iran’s Navy last week launched eight days of exercises in the Gulf
and the Gulf of Oman, in a region crucial for global oil supplies. “A US
reconnaissance aircraft which had intended to approach our operational war games
left ... upon the timely warning of our air defence forces,” Fars quoted Army
Commander Ataollah Salehi as saying. He was speaking to reporters as the
military test-fired two surface-to-sea missiles in the Gulf of Oman, it added.
There was no immediate US comment on the report.

Muslim man's wedding void if woman fails to convert:

Allahabad: The Allahabad High Court has held that a Muslim man's
marriage to a woman of another religion shall be considered void and against the
tenets of Islam if he fails to get her converted to the religion before
wedlock.
In its order, a Division Bench comprising Justice Vinod Prasad and
Justice Rajesh Chandra also ruled that remarriage of a Muslim man shall be held
void if he abandons his first wife without divorcing her and fails to treat
children born of the marriage in a fair and just manner.
The order was passed when the Bench dismissed a writ petition by
Dilbar Habib Siddiqui, a resident of Allahabad who had married a Hindu girl
named Khushboo on December 29 last year.

BJP questions basis for resumption of dialogue

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday questioned the basis
for the resumption of India-Pakistan dialogue.
Commenting on the decision taken by the two External Affairs
Ministers on a telephonic talk, BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar wanted to
know whether the issue of terrorism, especially anti-India terrorist activity
sponsored in or abetted from Pakistan would be on the agenda of the
dialogue.
The party, he said, would also like to know whether the basis for the
discussion would be the 2004 Islamabad joint statement, in which Pakistan had
given an assurance that it would not allow territory under its control to be
used as a springboard for anti-India terrorist activity or last year's joint
statement at Sharm-el-Sheikh.

Pakistan waiting for response to note verbale

ISLAMABAD: Now that the first milestones on the road map for the
resumption of dialogue have been laid, Pakistan hopes that India will respond to
its note verbale for arbitration on the construction of the Kishanganga
project.
The note verbale was sent to India on April 9 and Foreign Office
sources said a delay in the Indian response could raise
suspicions.
Pakistan decided to invoke Article 9 of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT)
after exhausting options to resolve differences with India over this project
within the Permanent Indus Waters Commission.
Islamabad is now awaiting a response from New Delhi on its decision
to invoke the disputes settlement mechanism.

Two-month gap to let passions over Kasab

NEW DELHI: India deliberately proposed July 15 for Foreign
Minister-level talks to let passions over the sentencing of Ajmal Kasab to cool
down, senior government sources said explaining why there was an over two-month
gap between the phone call and the meeting.
The time period will be utilised to do some spade work on addressing
the trust deficit and understanding each other's positions on all bilateral
issues. India's position was understood by Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah
Mehmood Qureshi, who did not think the time gap was out of the ordinary. The
Pakistani side also thought it would be a good idea to let some time elapse
after the excitement on the Kasab issue in both countries.

Army's honeymoon with Ikhwanis over

The army's love affair with ikhwanis or surrendered terrorists
inducted into its ranks appears to have turned sour.
Plans to raise more units com- posed of surrendered terrorists have
been shelved, five years after the army began inducting them as soldiers in
Kashmir.
Senior officers in the army Headquarters said the surren- dered
terrorists-turned-soldiers lacked discipline and were indulging in settling
personal scores and intimidation of locals.
Ikhwanis, however, were not always the army's bad
boys.
The army brass acknowl- edged they had facilitated sev- eral
successful counter-terror- ism operations in the Valley by providing valuable
leads. The 162 Infantry Battalion (Territ- orial Army) JAKLI, raised in 2004-05
with surrendered ter- rorists at its core, has eliminated around 300 terrorists
since its inception. The tally, officers agree, is respectable even when
compared to results produced by regular infantry units.

Murder charge on honour killers

Alarmed at the rising incidents of honour killings, the government
has finally decided to act. It will amend the 150- year-old Indian Penal Code
under which caste panchayats (Khaps) ordering such killings will be charged with
murder.
In a series of proposed strin- gent measures, the law ministry, HT
has learnt, has recomme- nded an amendment to Section 300 of the IPC to book
“all members“ of khaps with com- mitting murder, and not only those, who carried
out the killing.
Asked for its opinion by the home ministry, the law ministry has
advised insertion of a new (fifth) clause in the definition of
murder.
“All members of the caste panchayat...will be deemed to have
committed the offence of murder, even in case they mere- ly ordered any honour
killing,“ it has proposed.

doctors

Godman Prahlad Jani (81) claims to have lived without food or water
for the past 70 years.
Of the 70 years, the past two weeks were spent -- without eating or
drinking -- under CCTV surveillance at the Sterling Hospital, under medical
watch. Doctors say the facts do not lead to any easy
explanation.
The case has interested doctors of the Defence Research and
Development Organisation (DRDO) as it can have lessons in survival strategies
for soldiers, who often have to starve for days.
Unravelling his `mystery', Jani said Goddess Amba Mata visited him
when he was a child, and put her fin- ger in his mouth to
suckle.

Iran 'sentences Newsweek man in absentia to 13

Mr Bahari said Iran was trying to scare opposition
activists
A reporter for the US magazine Newsweek says he has been sentenced in
absentia to 13 years in jail in Iran, after covering opposition
protests.
Iranian-Canadian journalist Maziar Bahari was jailed in Iran for four
months last year, but later freed on bail and allowed to leave the
country.
Mr Bahari said he had been sentenced to 13 years and six months in
jail, plus 74 lashes.
He was arrested after reporting on protests over disputed
elections.
Iran has not commented on the sentencing.
The Iranian regime wanted to "scare as many people as possible" to
prevent them from taking to the streets to mark the anniversary of the June
poll, Mr Bahiri said in an interview with the Associated
Press.

Two Israeli Arabs suspected of spying for
Hezbollah

JERUSALEM: Israel has arrested two Israeli Arabs suspected of spying
for Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon, police and security services said Monday,
partially lifting a gag order on the case.
Websites flouted the gag order and made the arrest of political
activist Amir Makhoul into a rallying cry for critics of Israel's treatment of
its Arab minority.
Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the gag order was
imposed to avoid harming the investigation.
Israel's Shin Bet intelligence agency said in a statement that the
men were arrested for “severe security offenses including contacting a Hezbollah
agent.” Additional details of the case are still subject to the gag order, the
statement said. The two men have not been charged.

Turkish politician quits after sex scandal

ANKARA: The leader of Turkey's main opposition party resigned on
Monday saying he was the victim of a conspiracy following the release of a
videotape on the Internet purporting to show him and a woman in a
bedroom.
Deniz Baykal was the leader of the secularist Republican People's
Party (CHP), which has threatened to try to block constitutional reforms
proposed by Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's ruling AK
Party.
"I will not give up in the face of such a black campaign. I will not
let anybody question me," Baykal told a televised news
conference.
Baykal says the AK Party, whose roots lie in political Islam, must
have had knowledge of the videotape.

Canadian girl finally leaves Kingdom

RIYADH: A dual Indian and Canadian national who complained to the
Canadian government that her father was keeping her in Riyadh against her will
has finally left the Kingdom.
According to the Canadian Embassy, Nazia Quazi, 24, left the Kingdom
on Monday. “Quazi, who was given all possible assistance by the Canadian
mission, has flown out of Saudi Arabia,” said Sidney Fisher, spokeswoman for the
Canadian Embassy in Riyadh.
Fisher did not reveal where Quazi had flown to, but an Emirates
Airlines executive told Arab News that Quazi was holding a ticket for the Indian
city of Hyderabad with a longer transit stay in Dubai. According to her travel
itinerary, Quazi is to travel to Hyderabad on July 26. She was also accompanied
by a member of her family.

Shady drivers give Asir women a ‘bumpy ride’

ABHA: Working women in Asir endure much when it comes to
transportation to and from work. Recently, police in Asir arrested many private
drivers, the majority of them expatriates, involved in carrying drugs, including
hashish.
A police source told Arab News that an Indian driver had recently
been arrested; he was under the influence of drugs and his passenger was a
woman. He was subsequently deported.
Drugs are not the main problem when it comes to private drivers hired
to transport working women. There is the issue of khulwa (unrelated men and
women being together) as well. Unfortunately, the Asir area lacks a special
limousine company; the only one charges such high fares that a woman could fly
from Abha to Jeddah! Women are complaining, especially businesswomen and women
employees in the health and education sectors.

Israel holds remains of 269 Arabs, Palestinians

RAMALLAH: The Jerusalem Legal Aid and Human Rights Center on Tuesday
said that Israeli authorities hold the remains of 269 "martyrs” in secret
cemeteries known as the Cemeteries of Numbers.
The Jerusalem-based center said in a press statement that the number
includes Arabs and Palestinians.
The center added that there are 38 men still missing. It also said
that the remains are held in conditions that do not preserve the dignity of the
dead.
According to the center, the Israeli authorities agreed to hand over
the remains of Palestinian martyr Mashhour Al-Arouri to his family if they paid
12,000 Israeli shekels ($ 3,200) for carrying out a DNA
test.
