Javed Akhtar gets death threat for criticising Deoband fatwa
May 15, 2010
Lyricist and Rajya Sabha member Javed Akhtar on Saturday lodged a case with the Mumbai police after he received an e-mail threat for criticising a fatwa banning women working with men.
In the complaint, Akhtar said that he received an email in which it was stated that the countdown to his end has begun. The email also dared Akhtar to try to save himself if he could.
On Tuesday, the Darul Uloom Deoband, in a Talibanesque fatwa, decreed that it is 'haram' and illegal according to the Sharia for a family to accept a woman's earnings.
Clerics at the world's second largest Sunni Muslim seminary said the decree flowed from the fact that the Sharia prohibited the proximity of men and women at the workplace.
The e-mail taunted Akhtar, claiming he is a Muslim only in name and is actually a Jewish agent.  Reportedly, the e-mail signed by one Aneesul Islam accuses Akhtar of hurting Muslim sentiments with his comments.
The email said Akhtar could ignore the Ulema's orders if he wished, but he should not have said the fatwa was irrelevant.
The threat to Akhtar comes on the heels of a group of clerics criticising his anti-fatwa comments.
The clerics said that since Akhtar was not an authority on Islam, he should not comment on Islamic affairs.
Akhtar had opposed the Darul Uloom Deoband's fatwa and apparently described muftis as insane.

Opting for insurance un-Islamic: Darul Uloom Deoband
May 15, 2010
LUCKNOW: After its fatwa that working in banks is un-Islamic, the Darul Uloom Deoband has now declared that opting for an insurance policy too went against the tenets of Islam.
The "insurance policy is unlawful as it is based on interest and gambling," claimed the fatwa issued by the country's largest Islamic seminary.
The edict issued by Darul Ifta department of Darul Uloom seminary was in response to a query whether it is lawful to take an insurance policy in the light of the sharia.
Millions of Muslims in India opt for insurance policies which is a contract that pledges payment of an amount to a person assured or his nominee against losses or perils.
"The clerics who issue fatwas should also explain the context in which it is being issued to avoid any confusion," Maulana Afroz Mujtaba, a Delhi-based cleric, said.
Meanwhile, leading Islamic body Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind's spokesman Abdul Hameed Nomani said that fatwas should not be generalised and they should be seen in the context in which they have been issued.
"People must read between the lines and not generalise the fatwas," Nomani said.
Earlier, Darul Uloom had declared the job of writing and calculating interest based work in banks and insurance companies as un-Islamic. The fatwa was in response to whether Muslims can do job in bank or insurance company.
The recent fatwas have drawn flak from many clerics and progressive leaders.

Stop frequent fatwas: Clerics to Darul
May 15, 2010
Lucknow: No more fatwas at the drop of a hat, please. This is the terse message of a few clerics and common Muslims in Lucknow to Islamic seminary Darul Uloom,Deoband,in Saharanpur. Its obvious that the fatwas issued by Darul Ifta have turned off many in Muslim society who find the diktats distasteful.
First,it was the issue of Muslim women in jobs and earning. Then, there was one against earning from investments in the stock market. The latest one advises Muslims to leave bank jobs and stop dealing in liquor. Each one of these fatwas has unleashed a
controversy.Whats the need of issuing fatwas on every other question. And then why leave it on the internet to create a controversy asked leading Shia cleric Maulana Yasoof Abbas. It should be limited and not appear to be a sweeping statement on the entire Muslim community, he said, adding,If as muftis, its their duty to issue fatwa, then,as Muslims, its their responsibility to ensure that fatwas do not show Muslims in bad light. The in-charge of the Firangi Mehel Darul Ifta in Lucknow,Maulana Khalid Rasheed, says,Fatwas are an interpretation of Islamic teachings from a certified scholar. These are meant for a specific situation limited to an individual,
not for the rest of the community to follow. Maulana Khalid, who is a member of the executive committee of All-India Muslim Personal Law Board, said,Suppose a Muslim woman has no option but to work in an office for her livelihood and survival. What would their ban on Muslim women in jobs lead to
Imtiyaz Ali,a local businessman, said,People at Deoband should consider the fact that their fatwa did not create controversies earlier.Something must be wrong for all this to be happening now.

Dressed in a traditional Muslim attire, 50-year-old madarsa teacher Noor-ul-Huda walked out of Tihar jail on Friday evening with a grim face.
It was his appearance -- a beard, a white kurta pyjama and a skull cap -- that led to him spending almost 60 hours in jail, facing a volley of questions on his background and education.
Huda was offloaded from an Emirates flight and later arrest- ed when an NRI woman on the adjacent seat heard him say “15-20 minute mein jahaj udne wala hai“.
This can be translated both as “the plane will take off in 15- 20 minutes“ and “the plane will blow up in 15-20 minutes“.
Huda was on his way to deliv- er a religious lecture in Dubai when he was arrested on Wednesday.

Filmmakers in Indonesia Share Women's Stories About Life Under Islamic Law

Customers browse for Muslim headscarves at a shop in a mall in Jakarta, Indonesia, Thursday, April 22, 2010
Islamic law has been raising questions in Indonesia, a Muslim-majority nation where some provinces are adopting regulations based on Sharia, or Islamic, principles. Human rights groups, however, warn that the laws often are enforced unfairly, particularly for women. Filmmakers in Indonesia have recently released documentaries to show the effects Islamic law has on women.
The film opens with shots of a market, where mannequins in tight-fitting T-shirts contrast with girls in long skirts and headscarves. The sight is common in Aceh Province, which gained the right to implement Sharia law as a part of a peace accord with the Indonesian government.

Indonesian militants plotted to kill Barack Obama during a state visit, kill their own president and launch a series of Mumbai-style attacks on foreigners, according to officials.
Police sources said the group planned to kill Barack Obama on his visit to Indonesia next month Photo: AP
The group hatched an intricate plot to trigger a swathe of high profile attacks in Jakarta on August 17th, Indonesia's independence day, assassinate President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and declare an Islamic state ruled by Sharia law on the same day in a jihadi coup.
"They planned to target the Indonesian president, state officials and foreign guests," national Police Chief Bambang Hendarso Danuri said at a press conference.

ISLAMABAD: Militants have regrouped in large numbers in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and are crossing the Line of Control to sneak into the Indian side of the Himalayan region, local residents and political leaders have said.
The militants have regrouped and launched jehadi activities in the Neelum valley on the Pakistani side of the LoC, local politician Arif Shahid said. Local residents and Shahid said the militants were not from PoK.
"Jihadi activities have been restarted during the last few weeks," said Shahid, the secretary general of the All Parties National Alliance.

Anti-Islamic sentiments surface in wake of restrictions on veils
By Edward Cody
May 15, 2010
BRUSSELS -- Since she started wearing a full Islamic veil six weeks ago, Selma said, she has been stared at, frowned at, muttered to, mocked as a "ghost" and forced by a policeman to lift her veil to show her face.
"In Belgium, it is forbidden to carry your religious convictions to their logical conclusion," the 22-year-old Brussels woman said, speaking on the condition that her full name not be used to avoid trouble for her family.
These are uneasy times for the estimated 15 million Muslims of Western Europe, not only for fundamentalists such as Selma, but also for the vast majority who want to find their place as Muslims without confronting the Christian and secular traditions of the continent they have adopted as home.

Burqa debate stokes passion in N. Africa
May 15, 2010
ALGIERS/RABAT: A French proposal to ban full-face veils has stoked debate in Europe and also provoked strong reactions across the Mediterranean in North Africa, where many of France’s Muslims trace their origins.
Former French colonies Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia are still tied to France by history, language and migration, so their views on the “burqa” issue could have a direct influence on how Muslims inside France react to a ban.
People in North Africa are split between those who see the proposed ban — a version of which has already been approved by Belgium’s lower house of Parliament — as an attack on Islam, and those who applaud Europe for defending secular values.

French Burqa ban could face legal challenge
May 15, 2010
PARIS: France’s top legal advisory body has once again raised questions over the legal viability of a bill to ban full Muslim veils in public, just days before it is put before the cabinet.
The government is expected to present legislation next week to outlaw face-covering veils on the grounds that they are demeaning to women, even though experts have warned that such a prohibition could violate religious freedom.
The Council of State, which advises on the preparation of new laws and orders, earlier this year said introducing such a ban would threaten rights guaranteed under both the constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights.
The Paris dailyLe Figaro reported on Friday the advisory body had again come to the same conclusion after a meeting with government officials on Wednesday.

Same-gotra marriage legal, court had ruled 65 years ago
RONOJOY SEN
May 15, 2010
NEW DELHI: The sustained effort by aggressive khap panchayats and their influential political backers to force leading political parties to have a rethink on same gotra marriages is patently illegal. Sixty-five years ago, in 1945, the issue was settled by the Bombay High Court which categorically declared same gotra marriages were legal. And that's been the law of the land since.
In wake of the khap panchayat's defiance of the law, not only have top politicians like Om Prakash Chautala and Naveen Jindal caved in - no doubt to retain the political support of these medieval organisations - but national parties like BJP, too, have been wavering. The BJP on Thursday talked about building a "consensus" on the issue, indicating there was scope for modifying the legal view on same-gotra marriages. Even the Congress is said to be keeping its cards close to the chest.

Sohrabuddin case: Fearing for life, Prajapati wrote thrice to judge
May 15, 2010
JAIPUR: Even before Tulsiram Prajapati was killed by Gujarat police in an alleged encounter on December 28, 2006 in Banaskantha, he had written at least three letters to district judge Udaipur foretelling his possible stage-managed murder.
He had also alleged that during a remand period, Gujarat cops had administered an injection laced with some fatal substance on him after which he fell unconscious at least once and felt weak most of the time. TOI is in possession of his letters.
Prajapati had alleged that the police of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra had connived to eliminate him.
Only 14 days after writing the last letter, Prajapati was killed in an alleged encounter on December 28, 2006, before CID (Crime) probing the Sohrabuddin Sheikh's fake encounter case could record his statement. Prajapati is said to be the only eye-witness in the fake encounter of Sohrabuddin and his wife Kauserbi.

This woman wages a lone battle against khaps

CHANDIGARH: Top politicians kowtow to them. The police watch from a distance when they hold their mahapanchayats. Lovers shiver at their mention. But, if the dreaded khap panchayats in Haryana's badlands fear anyone, it's a 50-year-old woman — a former international volleyball player — who is contemptuous of their diktats.
Three decades ago, when three girls from rural Haryana could not join Jagmati Sangwan to represent India in volleyball for Asiad because they were married off by their parents, it marked a turning point in her career: the beginning of a long struggle against oppression of women.
It pained her when India returned with a bronze as she believed the three girls would have got the country gold. What rankled her more was the fate of numerous girls in Haryana whose cause she then took up with a gusto.

Next big terrorist attack on US will be postmarked 'Pakistan': CIA analyst
May 15, 2010
WASHINGTON: A former CIA analyst, who helped President Barack Obama formulate his Pakistan-Afghanistan policy, sees "a very serious possibility that the next mass casualty terrorist attack on the United States will be postmarked Pakistan."
"What we're seeing going on in Pakistan now is a very dangerous phenomenon," says Bruce Riedel, Senior Fellow, Brookings Institution, in an interview with the Council on Foreign Relations, a Washington think tank.
"The ideology of al Qaida, the ideology of global Islamic jihad that all jihadists should focus on the United States as the ultimate enemy, is gaining ground with groups beyond al Qaida," said Riedel, who chaired a special interagency committee last year to develop Obama's Af-Pak policy.

The punishment could effectively end Judge Baltasar Garzon's career.
The decision was made unanimously by a judicial oversight board called the General Council of the Judiciary after an emergency meeting about Garzon, said its spokeswoman, Gabriela Bravo.
Supporters chanted, cheered and clapped later as Garzon emerged from the nearby National Court, where he works. He hugged co-workers and appeared to be holding back tears before getting into a bulletproof limousine and riding away.

Shahzad used hawala system to fund terror plot
May 15, 2010
New York : South Asians often use an informal network of brokers, called "hawala," to transfer money over long distances when it is too inconvenient or dangerous to send cash by courier.
The centuries-old system is used to move billions of dollars in and out of countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan and Somalia – often to the chagrin of U.S. law enforcement.
A law enforcement official said that terror suspect Faisal Shahzad is believed to have tapped into such a network to help fund a plot to detonate a car bomb in Times Square. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.
Authorities say three men helped get money to Shahzad although they might not have known how the money was going to be used.

Days before Mecca Masjid anniversary, masked bikers fire at Hyderabad picket, kill constable
May 15 2010
Hyderabad : Three masked men on a motorcycle opened unprovoked fire at a police picket in Hyderabad’s old city this evening, killing a Constable. Soon afterwards, rumours — which proved unfounded — of a terrorist attack swept through other parts of the city, triggering panic.
Police sources said they suspected the banned SIMI in the attack, timed to create panic ahead of the third anniversary of the Mecca Masjid bombing on May 18. A constable of the Andhra Pradesh Home Guards had been killed in a similar attack around the same time last year.
Friday’s attack took place at Khilawat, close to Volga Café in the Shah Ali Banda neighbourhood, in the Hussaini Alam police station area. Constables at the picket returned fire, but the assailants escaped, said Hyderabad Police Commissioner A K Khan. The dead policeman has been identified as Constable Ramesh Kumar from Chittoor district, belonging to the 11th Batallion of the AP State Police.

Pakistani Taliban a terrorist organisation: Holder
May 15, 2010
Washington : The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) is a terrorist organisation, even if it has not been officially designated yet, a top US official has told his lawmakers.
The US now says that the Pakistani Taliban was responsible for the failed Times Square bomb attempt on May 1, in which a Pakistani-American, Faisal Shahzad, 30, has been arrested by federal authorities.
Following this, several US lawmakers have urged Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to designate Pakistani Taliban a foreign terrorist organisation.
The State Department has said that it is actively considering it and it is only a matter of completing the legal formalities.
"As I say, if not technically designated, they (Pakistani Taliban) are certainly a terrorist organisation," US Attorney General Eric Holder told Congressmen in his testimony before the House Judiciary Committee yesterday.

Progress made on Iran sanctions: US
May 15, 2010
United Nations : The US has claimed progress in imposing sanctions against Iran for its nuclear programme, saying it is engaging with China and Russia on the issue for an early UN Security Council resolution.
"We've had very constructive and cooperative working relationships with China and Russia," said Susan Rice, US's envoy to the UN "I think we're making progress."
The P5 and Germany have been meeting regularly in New York to draft a resolution that will impose a fourth round of sanctions against Iran for alleged violations of the NPT.
The US and other Western country suspect that Tehran is using its nuclear programme to make a bomb while Iran insists that its activities are peaceful.
"We're working intensively and the pace of our efforts are driven by the urgency we attach to an early and meaningful Security Council resolution," Rice said, noting the US also maintained the right to impose sanctions unilaterally or bilaterally.

The warning comes just days after Iraq was wracked by the worst attack this year, a series of coordinated bombings and assassinations that killed 119 people — most of them Shia and members of the security forces — across 10 cities.
The Iraqi insurgent umbrella group, the Islamic State of Iraq, named al-Nasser Lideen Allah Abu Suleiman as its new minister of war, replacing the Egyptian Abu Ayyub al-Masri, killed in a US-Iraqi military strike on a safe house in April.

Pak detainee admits he aided NY bomber
May 15 2010
Islamabad/New York, May 14: A Pakistani man detained in Pakistan has told interrogators that he is an accomplice of the man arrested over planting a bomb in New York’s Times Square, The Washington Post reported on Thursday.
The paper cited US officials as saying the suspect’s arrest had not been previously disclosed, and that he has provided an “independent stream” of evidence linking the Pakistani Taliban to the failed attack and admitted to helping Faisal Shahzad travel to remote tribal areas for training.
“What they said has been corroborated by other evidence,” a senior law enforcement source told the Post. A US intelligence official told the newspaper that the suspect “is believed to have a connection to the TTP (Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan),” an abbreviation for the Pakistani Tailban.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan says ‘America will burn’
15 May, 2010
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani Taliban warned the US on Friday that it will soon “burn” while calling for Pakistan’s rulers to be overthrown for following “America’s agenda”. The US is convinced that the Pakistani Taliban allied with al Qaeda and operating out of northwestern Pakistani border regions were behind an attempted car bomb attack in New York’s Times Square on May 1. The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attempted bombing. If confirmed, it would be the first time their members were involved in an attempted attack in the West. Pakistani Taliban spokesman Azam Tariq, in a video message obtained by Reuters, repeated a claim of responsibility, saying: “The movement proved what America could not have even imagined. It was just an explosive-laden vehicle which did not explode,” he said. reuters

Israeli Soldiers Continue To Use Children As Human Shields
By Palestine Monitor
May 15, 2010
Child organisation DCI-Palestine has documented two new cases of children used as human shields by Israeli soldiers during military operations.
In the old city of Nablus, while searching her house, Dua’a (16) was ordered by Israeli troops to open closets and lift beds, while the soldiers remained metres away: "They moved three metres backward towards the door while aiming their weapons at me… They ordered me to search the closets and other items in the room."
Sabri (14) was forced to walk in front of Israeli soldiers while stones were being hurled at them, during protests on the Palestinian Prisoner’s Day: "They were hiding behind me so I could cover them from the stones. They were shouting and saying in Hebrew 'Throw! Throw!’ to the young men who were throwing stones." According to an article published by Maan News Agency, the Israeli army said it would investigate the allegations.

Keep `outsiders' out of J&K census: Separatists
May 15, 2010
Separatist leaders in Jammu and Kashmir are using the issue of census operations starting on Saturday to create the same fear that was seen during the Amarnath land row in 2008.
Leaders such as Syed Ali Shah Geelani have warned cen- sus officers against including people not having state-subject status under Article 370 of the Constitution. “You (employees) are expected to list only state subjects,“ Geelani said.
When land was allotted for Amarnath pilgrims in 2008, sep- aratists whipped up anxiety among people that Hindus from outside the state would settle in the Himalayan heights. The allotment order, issued by the state, had to be rescinded.
The same game is being sought to be replayed. Though it is the census officers' job to include all those who have been living in the state for the past six months, separatists think the overwhelming Muslim- majority character of the state will be lost if that is done.
