Javed Akhtar gets death threat for criticising Deoband
fatwa
May 15, 2010
Lyricist and Rajya Sabha member Javed Akhtar on Saturday lodged a
case with the Mumbai police after he received an e-mail threat for criticising a
fatwa banning women working with men.
In the complaint, Akhtar said that he received an email in which it
was stated that the countdown to his end has begun. The email also dared Akhtar
to try to save himself if he could.
On Tuesday, the Darul Uloom Deoband, in a Talibanesque fatwa, decreed
that it is 'haram' and illegal according to the Sharia for a family to accept a
woman's earnings.
Clerics at the world's second largest Sunni Muslim seminary said the
decree flowed from the fact that the Sharia prohibited the proximity of men and
women at the workplace.
The e-mail taunted Akhtar, claiming he is a Muslim only in name and
is actually a Jewish agent. Reportedly,
the e-mail signed by one Aneesul Islam accuses Akhtar of hurting Muslim
sentiments with his comments.
The email said Akhtar could ignore the Ulema's orders if he wished,
but he should not have said the fatwa was irrelevant.
The threat to Akhtar comes on the heels of a group of clerics
criticising his anti-fatwa comments.
The clerics said that since Akhtar was not an authority on Islam, he
should not comment on Islamic affairs.
Akhtar had opposed the Darul Uloom Deoband's fatwa and apparently
described muftis as insane.

Opting for insurance un-Islamic: Darul Uloom
Deoband
May 15, 2010
LUCKNOW: After its fatwa that working in banks is un-Islamic, the
Darul Uloom Deoband has now declared that opting for an insurance policy too
went against the tenets of Islam.
The "insurance policy is unlawful as it is based on interest and
gambling," claimed the fatwa issued by the country's largest Islamic seminary.
The edict issued by Darul Ifta department of Darul Uloom seminary was
in response to a query whether it is lawful to take an insurance policy in the
light of the sharia.
Millions of Muslims in India opt for insurance policies which is a
contract that pledges payment of an amount to a person assured or his nominee
against losses or perils.
"The clerics who issue fatwas should also explain the context in
which it is being issued to avoid any confusion," Maulana Afroz Mujtaba, a
Delhi-based cleric, said.
Meanwhile, leading Islamic body Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind's spokesman Abdul
Hameed Nomani said that fatwas should not be generalised and they should be seen
in the context in which they have been issued.
"People must read between the lines and not generalise the fatwas,"
Nomani said.
Earlier, Darul Uloom had declared the job of writing and calculating
interest based work in banks and insurance companies as un-Islamic. The fatwa
was in response to whether Muslims can do job in bank or insurance company.
The recent fatwas have drawn flak from many clerics and progressive
leaders.

Stop frequent fatwas: Clerics to Darul
May 15, 2010
Lucknow: No more fatwas at the drop of a hat, please. This is the
terse message of a few clerics and common Muslims in Lucknow to Islamic seminary
Darul Uloom,Deoband,in Saharanpur. Its obvious that the fatwas issued by Darul
Ifta have turned off many in Muslim society who find the diktats
distasteful.
First,it was the issue of Muslim women in jobs and earning. Then, there
was one against earning from investments in the stock market. The latest one
advises Muslims to leave bank jobs and stop dealing in liquor. Each one of these
fatwas has unleashed a
controversy.Whats the need of issuing fatwas on every other
question. And then why leave it on the internet to create a controversy asked
leading Shia cleric Maulana Yasoof Abbas. It should be limited and not appear to
be a sweeping statement on the entire Muslim community, he said, adding,If as
muftis, its their duty to issue fatwa, then,as Muslims, its their responsibility to
ensure that fatwas do not show Muslims in bad light. The in-charge of the
Firangi Mehel Darul Ifta in Lucknow,Maulana Khalid Rasheed, says,Fatwas are an
interpretation of Islamic teachings from a certified scholar. These are meant for
a specific situation limited to an individual,
not for the rest of the community to follow. Maulana Khalid, who is a
member of the executive committee of All-India Muslim Personal Law
Board, said,Suppose a Muslim woman has no option but to work in an office for her
livelihood and survival. What would their ban on Muslim women in jobs lead to
Imtiyaz Ali,a local businessman, said,People at Deoband should
consider the fact that their fatwa did not create controversies
earlier.Something must be wrong for all this to be happening now.

Islamic law has been raising questions in Indonesia, a
Muslim-majority nation where some provinces are adopting regulations based on
Sharia, or Islamic, principles. Human rights groups, however, warn that the laws
often are enforced unfairly, particularly for women. Filmmakers in Indonesia
have recently released documentaries to show the effects Islamic law has on
women.
The film opens with shots of a market, where mannequins in
tight-fitting T-shirts contrast with girls in long skirts and headscarves. The

Anti-Islamic sentiments surface in wake of restrictions on

BRUSSELS -- Since she started wearing a full Islamic veil six weeks
ago, Selma said, she has been stared at, frowned at, muttered to, mocked as a
"ghost" and forced by a policeman to lift her veil to show her
face.
"In Belgium, it is forbidden to carry your religious convictions to
their logical conclusion," the 22-year-old Brussels woman said, speaking on the
condition that her full name not be used to avoid trouble for her

These are uneasy times for the estimated 15 million Muslims of

vast majority who want to find their place as Muslims without confronting the
Christian and secular traditions of the continent they have adopted as
home.

Burqa debate stokes passion in N. Africa
May 15, 2010
ALGIERS/RABAT: A French proposal to ban full-face veils has stoked
debate in Europe and also provoked strong reactions across the Mediterranean in
North Africa, where many of France’s Muslims trace their
origins.
Former French colonies Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia are still tied to
France by history, language and migration, so their views on the “burqa” issue
could have a direct influence on how Muslims inside France react to a
ban.
People in North Africa are split between those who see the proposed
ban — a version of which has already been approved by Belgium’s lower house of
Parliament — as an attack on Islam, and those who applaud Europe for defending
secular values.

French Burqa ban could face legal challenge
May 15, 2010
PARIS: France’s top legal advisory body has once again raised
questions over the legal viability of a bill to ban full Muslim veils in public,
just days before it is put before the cabinet.
The government is expected to present legislation next week to outlaw
face-covering veils on the grounds that they are demeaning to women, even though
experts have warned that such a prohibition could violate religious freedom.
The Council of State, which advises on the preparation of new laws
and orders, earlier this year said introducing such a ban would threaten rights
guaranteed under both the constitution and the European Convention on Human
Rights.
The Paris dailyLe Figaro reported on Friday the advisory body had
again come to the same conclusion after a meeting with government officials on
Wednesday.

Same-gotra marriage legal, court had ruled 65 years

RONOJOY SEN
May 15, 2010
NEW DELHI: The sustained effort by aggressive khap panchayats and
their influential political backers to force leading political parties to have a
rethink on same gotra marriages is patently illegal. Sixty-five years ago, in
1945, the issue was settled by the Bombay High Court which categorically
declared same gotra marriages were legal. And that's been the law of the land
since.
In wake of the khap panchayat's defiance of the law, not only have
top politicians like Om Prakash Chautala and Naveen Jindal caved in - no doubt
to retain the political support of these medieval organisations - but national
parties like BJP, too, have been wavering. The BJP on Thursday talked about
building a "consensus" on the issue, indicating there was scope for modifying
the legal view on same-gotra marriages. Even the Congress is said to be keeping
its cards close to the chest.

But, if the dreaded khap panchayats in Haryana's badlands fear anyone, it's a

Three decades ago, when three girls from rural Haryana could not join

It pained her when India returned with a bronze as she believed the

Shahzad used hawala system to fund terror plot
May 15, 2010
New York : South Asians often use an informal network of brokers,

The centuries-old system is used to move billions of dollars in and

A law enforcement official said that terror suspect Faisal Shahzad is

Authorities say three men helped get money to Shahzad although they

failed Times Square bomb attempt on May 1, in which a Pakistani-American, Faisal
Shahzad, 30, has been arrested by federal authorities.
Following this, several US lawmakers have urged Secretary of State
Hillary Clinton to designate Pakistani Taliban a foreign terrorist
organisation.
The State Department has said that it is actively considering it and
it is only a matter of completing the legal formalities.
"As I say, if not technically designated, they (Pakistani Taliban)
are certainly a terrorist organisation," US Attorney General Eric Holder told
Congressmen in his testimony before the House Judiciary Committee
yesterday.

Progress made on Iran sanctions: US
May 15, 2010
United Nations : The US has claimed progress in imposing sanctions
against Iran for its nuclear programme, saying it is engaging with China and
Russia on the issue for an early UN Security Council
resolution.
"We've had very constructive and cooperative working relationships
with China and Russia," said Susan Rice, US's envoy to the UN "I think we're
making progress."
The P5 and Germany have been meeting regularly in New York to draft a
resolution that will impose a fourth round of sanctions against Iran for alleged
violations of the NPT.
The US and other Western country suspect that Tehran is using its
nuclear programme to make a bomb while Iran insists that its activities are
peaceful.
"We're working intensively and the pace of our efforts are driven by
the urgency we attach to an early and meaningful Security Council resolution,"
Rice said, noting the US also maintained the right to impose sanctions
unilaterally or bilaterally.

Qaeda Vows Blood-Soaked Days Ahead
Kumar Chellappan
May 15, 2010
Al Qaeda in Iraq’s new leader warned Shia on Friday that “dark days
soaked with blood” lie ahead and that a new campaign of attacks was under
way.
The warning comes just days after Iraq was wracked by the worst
attack this year, a series of coordinated bombings and assassinations that
killed 119 people — most of them Shia and members of the security forces —
across 10 cities.
The Iraqi insurgent umbrella group, the Islamic State of Iraq, named
al-Nasser Lideen Allah Abu Suleiman as its new minister of war, replacing the
Egyptian Abu Ayyub al-Masri, killed in a US-Iraqi military strike on a safe
house in April.

Pak detainee admits he aided NY bomber
May 15 2010
Islamabad/New York, May 14: A Pakistani man detained in Pakistan has
told interrogators that he is an accomplice of the man arrested over planting a
bomb in New York’s Times Square, The Washington Post reported on
Thursday.
The paper cited US officials as saying the suspect’s arrest had not
been previously disclosed, and that he has provided an “independent stream” of
evidence linking the Pakistani Taliban to the failed attack and admitted to
helping Faisal Shahzad travel to remote tribal areas for
training.
“What they said has been corroborated by other evidence,” a senior
law enforcement source told the Post. A US intelligence official told the
newspaper that the suspect “is believed to have a connection to the TTP
(Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan),” an abbreviation for the Pakistani
Tailban.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan says ‘America will
burn’
15 May, 2010
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani Taliban warned the US on Friday that it will
soon “burn” while calling for Pakistan’s rulers to be overthrown for following
“America’s agenda”. The US is convinced that the Pakistani Taliban allied with
al Qaeda and operating out of northwestern Pakistani border regions were behind
an attempted car bomb attack in New York’s Times Square on May 1. The Pakistani
Taliban claimed responsibility for the attempted bombing. If confirmed, it would
be the first time their members were involved in an attempted attack in the
West. Pakistani Taliban spokesman Azam Tariq, in a video message obtained by
Reuters, repeated a claim of responsibility, saying: “The movement proved what
America could not have even imagined. It was just an explosive-laden vehicle
which did not explode,” he said. reuters

Israeli Soldiers Continue To Use Children As Human
Shields
By Palestine Monitor
May 15, 2010
Child organisation DCI-Palestine has documented two new cases of
children used as human shields by Israeli soldiers during military
operations.
In the old city of Nablus, while searching her house, Dua’a (16) was
ordered by Israeli troops to open closets and lift beds, while the soldiers
remained metres away: "They moved three metres backward towards the door while
aiming their weapons at me… They ordered me to search the closets and other
items in the room."
Sabri (14) was forced to walk in front of Israeli soldiers while
stones were being hurled at them, during protests on the Palestinian Prisoner’s
Day: "They were hiding behind me so I could cover them from the stones. They
were shouting and saying in Hebrew 'Throw! Throw!’ to the young men who were
throwing stones." According to an article published by Maan News Agency, the
Israeli army said it would investigate the allegations.

Keep `outsiders' out of J&K census:
Separatists
May 15, 2010
Separatist leaders in Jammu
and Kashmir are using the issue of census operations starting on Saturday to
create the same fear that was seen during the Amarnath land row in
2008.
Leaders such as Syed Ali Shah Geelani have warned cen- sus officers
against including people not having state-subject status under Article 370 of
the Constitution. “You (employees) are expected to list only state subjects,“
Geelani said.
When land was allotted for Amarnath pilgrims in 2008, sep- aratists
whipped up anxiety among people that Hindus from outside the state would settle
in the Himalayan heights. The allotment order, issued by the state, had to be
rescinded.
The same game is being sought to be replayed. Though it is the census
officers' job to include all those who have been living in the state for the
past six months, separatists think the overwhelming Muslim- majority character
of the state will be lost if that is done.
