NEW
DELHI: The latest authentication of Pakistan’s reluctance to rein in terrorists
operating out of its territory has come from Russian ambassador to India
Alexander M Kadakin: around 40 terror camps are still active in the
Pakistan-Afghanistan border areas and Islamabad is yet to dismantle them.
Kadakin,
in his second stint as ambassador to India, told TOI in an exclusive interview
that this information was based on Russian satellite imagery and intelligence.
“From
the information we have, there are about 38 to 40 such terror camps. Earlier
they would have these bright green boards declaring the name of the organization
like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), they have now removed them. However, the camps still
remain,’’ Kadakin said, adding Pakistan had not done enough to get rid of these
camps.
Kadakin’s
statement is extremely significant because it corroborates Indian intelligence
reports that LeT has become more active in the region and is looking to target
India’s interests in Afghanistan. On the developing situation in Afghanistan,
Kadakin said Russia was “united 100% with India”.
“Moderate
Taliban is an oxymoron. It’s like saying moderate fascist or moderate Nazi.
Also, we believe there is greater role for India in Afghanistan as a peace
factor than some other countries. Russia too has a greater role and we are ready
to train their personnel, reconstruct Soviet-era factories and provide medical
help,” said Kadakin, who described India as Russia’s greatest friend.
After
his meeting with Russian PM Vladimir Putin in March, PM Manmohan Singh had said
India and Russia had agreed to “intensify consultations” on Afghanistan.
Kadakin
said Russia did not favour immediate withdrawal of US-led forces from
Afghanistan, an opinion that will come as music to Indian ears. “We are not for
hastened withdrawal. In fact, if they withdraw immediately, there will be hell
in Afghanistan. It is important that at least some semblance of order is
maintained before it happens,” said Kadakin.
In
the past, Russian authorities have said bringing in more troops in Afghanistan
would worsen the situation and NATO should leave immediately after finishing its
job.
According
to Kadakin, India-Russia ties have actually become stronger than was the case in
the Soviet era. “What we now have is more of pragmatic affection than romantic
infatuation of the days of Hindi-Rusi bhai bhai,” he said, referring to growing
defence and nuclear cooperation. Kadakin was Russia’s ambassador to India from
1999 to 2004 and was appointed ambassador again last year.

RIYADH: The Shoura Council endorsed on Sunday the recent fatwa given
by the Council of Senior Islamic Scholars headed by Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul
Aziz Al-Asheikh on terror financing last month.
Describing terror financing as evil, Shoura Council Chairman Abdullah
Al-Asheikh said on Sunday the Council will frame a set of regulations to combat
terror financing.
He said the proposed recommendation would be sent to the Council of
Ministers and would include regulations to prohibit financing terror activities
and it would incorporate stringent punishments for violations since such funding
could be a threat to the peace and security of the country. Last month, the 20-member Council of Senior
Islamic Scholars said terror financing was a crime as big as terrorism itself
because it empowers and enables sabotage, insecurity, murder and destruction of
property. Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah echoed this sentiment
in a statement on Friday, making no distinction between funding terrorism and
acts of terrorism.
“Terror financing amounts to helping acts of terrorism and supporting
the existence and spread of terror,” said the fatwa.
“Terror is a crime that sabotages security. It is crime against
people and private and public property. It manifests in bombing houses, schools,
hospitals, factories and bridges; in hijacking and blowing up airplanes. It also
destroys government resources, such as oil and gas pipelines. Such acts of
destruction are prohibited under Shariah.” In statement issued on behalf of the
Shoura Council, Abdullah Al-Asheikh explained that donations to legitimate and
legal charitable activities is not the same as blindly donating to organizations
that channel funding for terrorism.
"Charity helps distressed people while financing terror helps destroy
men and property," he said.
The chairman also said that a new recommendation by the council would
establish guidelines for financial donations. The Kingdom has already
implemented stricter guidelines for establishing charitable organizations, and
it is illegal for groups to collect money unless they have been accredited by
the state. The measure was aimed at controlling which groups could legally
accept financial donations.

43 Taliban killed in drone strike, army
operation

HANGU/MIRANSHAH: Security forces and drone strikes killed around 43
Taliban in various areas of the FATA on Sunday.
At least 33 Taliban were killed and four injured during clashes with
security forces and jet air strikes in Orakzai Agency, official sources said on
Sunday.
The sources told Daily Times that the forces killed 10 Taliban when
they resisted troops’ advancement in Mazoti village in Upper
Orakzai.
Fighter jets also targeted Taliban hideouts in Kasha, Teerangra,
Badeewani Khawan, Shna Gandi, Khose Maila and Khawri areas, killing at least 13
Taliban.
Another 10 Taliban were killed during clashes with security forces at
Daboori area in Upper Orakzai. The forces claimed to have secured Daboori.
Meanwhile in Swat, two Taliban commanders were killed during a clash
with forces on Sunday.
The sources said the clash took place at Dewalia area of Kabal
tehsil.
The slain commanders were identified as Abdul Kabir and Akbar Khan,
residents of Dewalia.
Separately, at least 10 Taliban were killed when a US drone fired two
missiles into a compound in North Waziristan.
The strike targeted a house in Inzar kas village, 60 kilometres west
of Miranshah, injuring four others.
"The missiles struck a militant compound in the village," a senior
security official in the area told AFP on condition of
anonymity.
"The compound became suspicious as it was being used by foreigners,"
he said. "It was, however, not immediately known if any high-value target was
present in the area at the time of attack."
Four spy aircraft were hovering over the area until the filing of
this report.

19 rebels killed in Pak offensive

May 9: Nineteen militants were among 23 people killed in the restive
northwest Pakistan, where a US drone targeted insurgent hideouts while security
forces backed by helicopter gunships stepped up ground attacks on terrorist
hideouts in the region.
Ten people, including six militants, were killed and several others
injured in a US drone strike in the restive North Waziristan tribal region in
northwest Pakistan. Unmanned spy planes fired at least two missiles at a
suspected militant hideout in Inzarkas village, located 50 km west of Miran
Shah, the main town in North Waziristan Agency.
The hideout targeted in the attack was almost flattened. “Local
residents pulled 10 bodies from the rubble and some more people are said to be
injured,” a source said.

70 million child labourers in Pakistan: ILO

ISLAMABAD, May 9: The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has
estimated that Pakistan has 70 million children working as
labourers.
The last ILO-IPEC survey carried out in 1996 had put the child labour
population in the country at 3.3 million.
In a report, titled “Accelerating Action against Child Labour”, the
ILO said the global trends in child labour showed a decline from 2004 to 2008.
However, the decline was slowing.
There are still 215 million children caught up in child labour,
according to the report.
The only reference made in the report about Pakistan pertained to the
decade-long collaboration between Fifa and ILO-IPEC in the football goods
industry. The report said the project was a good example of successful
public-private partnership in eliminating child labour.

PESHAWAR: When Faisal Shahzad was arrested over the New York car bomb
attempt, he joined a growing list of Western terror suspects inspired, trained
or sponsored by extremists in Pakistan.
Shahzad was brought up in Pakistan but educated in the US, where he
got a job, settled his young family into suburbia and acquired citizenship. But
the American dream appeared to go badly wrong. Returning from a visit to
Pakistan, he told US immigration officials he went to see his parents. After his
arrest on Monday over the attempt to set off a car bomb at Times Square, he
allegedly confessed to being trained in Pakistan to make
bombs.

Kerala Police blame Islamic outfit for unrest

The intelligence wing of Kerala Police reported that Solidarity Youth
Movement, youth outfit of Jama’at-e-Islami, was responsible for sparking off the
conflict in Kinalur, Kozhikode district. More than 60 persons, including women
and police personnel, had been injured on Thursday. The incident led to paranoia
in the region, with people fleeing their villages for fear of police
brutality.
The police had unleashed brutal terror in Kinalur after stones were
thrown at them by people who had blocked a Revenue Department team from carrying
out a survey. The survey was to acquire land for construction of a 26-km,
four-lane road to a 270-acre industrial estate where no significant units
existed or were proposed.

New Delhi : The Pune German Bakery blast of February 13 was carried
out by the “South India module of Indian Mujahideen”, headed by Riyaz Bhatkal,
one of the arrested members of the terror group is believed to have told
investigators during interrogation.
IM operative Salman Ahmed alias Chotu, who was in Nepal the day the
blast occurred, has also told investigators that he received an SMS and a call
from Bhatkal that day, sources said.
“Riyaz Bhatkal sent an SMS to Salman informing him about the Pune
blast being successfully carried out and also called to tell him that he should
switch on TV to check it,” a source said.

‘If Pakistan doesn’t act, US will’: US puts blame on Taliban for NY
bomb plot

WASHINGTON, May 9: If Pakistan failed to take appropriate actions
against the Taliban, the United States will, US Attorney General Eric Holder
said on Sunday as he and other American officials firmly blamed the Pakistani
Taliban for a failed attempt to blow up a bomb in New York’s Times Square.
“To the extent that it does not, we will, as Secretary Clinton
indicated, take the appropriate
steps,” said Mr Holder when asked to explain her earlier statement.
In an interview recorded on Friday, US Secretary of State Hillary
Clinton warned that if a successful terrorist attack was traced back to
Pakistan, the consequences for that country would be “very severe”.

JEDDAH: Six young Saudis recently attended US President Barack
Obama’s Summit on Entrepreneurship that was held in Washington on April 26-27 to
deepen ties between business leaders, foundations and social entrepreneurs in
Muslim majority countries and the US.
“The experience was a great chance for us, being the youngest
delegation,” said Norah Al-Magraby, a nursing student at Jeddah’s Dar Al-Hekma
College and one of the six Saudis who attended the summit.
“We had the chance to meet experienced and successful people who were
willing to share their knowledge with us and give advice to help young
entrepreneurs,” she added.
Obama announced that
Washington would host the summit in his celebrated “New Beginning” speech in
Cairo in June 2009.

US missiles kill 10 in Pakistan

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Suspected US missiles killed 10 people in a
militant-controlled region close to the Afghan border Sunday, the first such
strike since an alleged Pakistani-trained extremist was accused of a failed
Times Square attack.
Last week’s attempted car bombing in New York City has added to
pressure on Pakistan to crack down on Al-Qaeda and Taleban militants who have
long had safe havens along the Afghan border. Top US officials said Sunday they
believe the Pakistani Taleban directed the plot.
US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Washington expects
more cooperation from Pakistan in fighting terrorism and warned of “severe
consequences” if an attack on US soil were traced back to the South Asian

Muslim-majority nation where some provinces are adopting regulations based on
Sharia, or Islamic, principles. Human rights groups, however, warn that the laws
often are enforced unfairly, particularly for women. Filmmakers in Indonesia
have recently released documentaries to show the effects Islamic law has on
women.
The film opens with shots of a market, where mannequins in
tight-fitting T-shirts contrast with girls in long skirts and headscarves. The
sight is common in Aceh Province, which gained the right to implement Sharia law
as a part of a peace accord with the Indonesian
government.

As a U.S. Muslim of Pakistani descent, I have wondered why so many
plots against America continue to be hatched in Pakistan. At least nine people
with some connection to Pakistan have been charged with terror plots against the
United States in the past two years. What is it that accounts for this
disturbing trend?
One can't simply blame Islam. Were that true, Indonesia, the most
populous Muslim country, would be the epicenter of terrorist plots against
America. But it's not. One can't simply blame fiery rhetoric. Were that true,
Iran, the most vocally anti-American of Islamic nations, would be breeding
terrorists. But it's not. One can't simply blame illiteracy. Were that true,

JEDDAH – A program was organized by Moulana Hafiz-ur-Rahman academy
Jeddah in the honor of 11 new Muslims on May 7 2010 at a restaurant in
Jeddah.
Bahjet Najmi, the president and founder of the academy, introduced
the chief guest Sheikh Salman, earlier B. Ratna Rajo, who for the last 10 years
has been preaching and spreading Islam in the kingdom.
Allah guided over 500 people to Islam through him, including several
who reverted recently and were attending the event.
Sheikh Salman was a devoted Christian hailing from the Andhra Pradesh
state of India. He embraced Islam in 1993 after reading several books of Ahmed
Deedat on Christianity and Islam.

JALANDHAR/HOSHIARPUR: Rawalpindi 8km — the milestone on the busy
Hoshiarpur-Phagwara Road leaves you surprised. For, it’s Lahore, and not
Rawalpindi, that’s the nearest Pakistani city from the international border.
But, this Rawalpindi is right in India, a village near Jalandhar.
And, there is another Rawalpindi, about 40km away near Hoshiarpur.
Far from being uncomfortable with the name, and despite, the constant
tension between the two nations, the inhabitants of these two Pindis yearn for
permanent peace with Pakistan.
These two villages, inhabited mostly by migrants post-Partition, are
named after the Pakistan town housing its Army’s headquarters. But that bothers
them the least.

warnings to Pakistan after the failed Times Square car bombing that it must
urgently move against the nexus of Islamic militancy in the country’s lawless

McChrystal, met with the Pakistani military chief, Gen Ashfaq Kayani, at his
headquarters here on Friday and urged Pakistan to move more quickly in beginning

LONDON: Al-Qaida has threatened to abduct UK’s Prince Harry if he
dares to fly a helicopter in Afghanistan.
People who support the Osama bin Laden-led terror group have posted
the warnings on a known al-Qaida Arabic website, Daily Express reported on
Sunday.
Harry, 25, was presented with his pilot’s “wings” by his father
Prince Charles on Friday and has been selected for Apache training. “Wouldn’t it
be sweeeeeeeet if the mujahideen could capture that pig!,” a person wrote on the
website.
Another said: “It would be wonderful if we could capture this bastard
alive after shooting down his Apache.”
The internet forum was one of the first to issue a video in which a
spokesman for the Pakistan Taliban claimed responsibility for the attempted car
bombing of Times Square in New York.

WASHINGTON: On the eve of Hamid Karzai’s visit here, US president
Barack Obama has instructed his senior national security team to stop berating
the Afghan president and treat him with more public respect, a prominent
newspaper reported on Sunday.
During a White House meeting last month, Obama made clear to
officials that Karzai is the chief US partner in the war effort and it will be
reflected in his visit here that begins on Monday, Washington Post reported.
Obama made clear in a meeting with his senior national security team
that Karzai is “someone we’re going to have to work with for the next 4 1/2
years.” Therefore, “high expectations should be set for (Karzai), and he should
be held to them,” but Obama would not tolerate any more public criticism.

Only 58 countries still award death penalty

What is the oldest legal codification of capital punishment?
Most of written history across the world has references to capital
punishment indicating that it is as old as civilization itself. The first known
codification of the death penalty was in the 18th century BCE, in the code of
Babylonian king Hammurabi. The 14th-century BCE Hittite code, the 7th-century
BCEs Draconian-code of Athens and the 5th-century BCE Roman Law — all had a
provision of death sentence.
Kautilya’s ‘‘Arthasastra’’ also imposes death penalty for crimes like
rape of a minor and theft in the government treasury. Recorded history gives
instances of death sentence carried out by crucifixion, drowning, beating to
death, stoning, burning alive, impalement, hanging, firing squads,
electrocution, lethal injection, and so on.

Pak Army, ISI reject new lawyer

Islamabad , May 9: The Pakistan Army and Inter-Services Intelligence
(ISI) have rejected the appointment of Professor Kaiyan Homi Kaikobad as head of
the legal team of Pakistan in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against
India on Kishenganga hydropower project, officials here said.
“The appointment was show down by the Pakistan Army, ISI and others,”
a senior government official said. He added that the previous Pakistan team
headed by Professor James Crawford that had fought the legal battle against
India on Baglihar Hydropower project will fight the case on Kishenganga
hydropower project. “The authorities think that Pakistan cannot afford to try a
new team headed by an unproven new man like Kaikobad who has not fought a single
case in the international arbitration court while James Crawford is a well-known
expert in international water law,” he said. Sources revealed that Kamal
Majidullah, reputed close friend of President Asif Ali Zardari, who had been the
driving force behind Kaikobad’s inexplicable catapulting, was virtually isolated
in the a recent meeting and his viewpoint was not entertained seriously.
Pakistan on April 19 has forwarded two names to India for the constitution of
the arbitration court. India would also propose their names and then both the
countries would agree upon on the name of chief of the arbitration court. The
constitution of the court will take place within another five to eight
months.

SHARJAH — Now it has become easier and closer for students of all
ages to find a more spacious and convenient place for memorising the Holy Quran.
Special areas have been designated ?for the purpose at three mosques in ?the
city by the Holy Quran and Sunnah Foundation.
“The new complexes shall be fully independent, and directly
supervised by the foundation,” said Hamada Matter Taryam, manager of the
Foundation. Taryam said the initiative is aimed at attracting more people,
particularly at the grand masjids in areas that are densely
populated.

Lahore: Former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf has said 200,000
of his Facebook fans are asking him to return to the country from Britain and he
will contest the next general elections.
Musharraf said that he would contest the election even if they were
held on a mid-term basis, a private TV channel reported.
In a video message shown addressed to the members of his party,
All-Pakistan Muslim League, he said he had 200,000 fans on the social networking
site Facebook and they want him to return to Pakistan.

KARACHI: Foreign Minister
Shah Mehmood Qureshi Sunday said Faisal Shahzad, the man involved in failed
attack at Times Squre, is not a Pakistani but a naturalised American
citizen.
In an interview when asked to comment on reports of recovery of two
Pakistani passports from Faisal Shahzad, Qureshi said: “I will have to check. I
am not aware of that but I am aware that he is a naturalised American citizen,
and the Government of Pakistan will cooperate with the United States and help
them in whatever way we can.”
He said Pakistan is serious in its probe into the Mumbai attacks.
Hafiz Saeed was arrested but was later set free by the court in the absence of
sufficient evidence.
“Pakistan wants cordial relations with India and we will not let any
terrorist outfit sabotage the process of dialogue between the two countries,”
the FM said.
He said he would invite Indian external minister to visit Pakistan
for talks. Back channel diplomacy is of no use without front channel diplomacy,
he added.

Senator Saifullah wants 19th amendment

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League-Q (Like-Minded group) has
started making contacts with political parties in the parliament on the issue of
adopting Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa as new name for the erstwhile NWFP and suggested to
further change it to ‘Hazara-Pakhtunkhwa’.
“I have informally contacted leaderships of PML-N and ANP and they
are ready to accept this proposal,” claimed Senator Salim Saifullah Khan, the
president of his own faction of the PML-Q, while talking to Dawn on Saturday.
Mr Saifullah said his party wanted the government to bring the 19th
constitutional amendment bill during the ongoing sessions of the National
Assembly and Senate for amending the name of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa to
“Hazara-Pakhtunkhwa” before “it is too late”.

Girl ‘forced into prostitution’

SIALKOT, May 9: Just after a few days of crime against a girl student
of Daska hitting the headlines, the plight of another abducted girl has surfaced
after she has allegedly been kept in the house of ill fame for two weeks.
According to the FIR (No 365/2010) lodged at the Daska city police
station by a girl from Fatehgarh (Sialkot), Sajid Masih and Illyas Butt,
residents of Akbarabad, abducted her from near a local graveyard a month ago.
The abductors, she said, took her to Khwaja Shahid’s house at Daska’s
Bhatti Colony where Sajid raped her at gunpoint. Later, both sold her to Shahid
for Rs20,000.

Mideast negotiations begin

RAMALLAH, West Bank: Chief Palestinian peace negotiator Saeb Erekat
said Sunday that proximity talks between the Palestinian Authority and Israel
have formally started.
"We can now say that the indirect talks have started and they will
last for four months," Erekat told reporters following a meeting between
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and the US Middle East envoy George Mitchell
who is mediating the talks.
Erekat said all final-status issues are on the table. Those include
defining a border for a future Palestinian state, a decision on the fate of
Palestinians who were driven out of or fled what is now Israel and the status of
Jerusalem.
He made it clear that "there will not be direct talks with Israel.
The talks are with the American side." Mitchell has been in the region since
Monday trying to bridge gaps between the Palestinians and
Israel.

'Muslim countries do not manage wealth
properly'

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammed is arguably the
most popular politician in the Muslim street. Even in retirement he still exudes
that "street cred" and "wow" factor because he speaks his mind. Not
surprisingly, when he delivered the keynote speech at the Malaysia Islamic
finance showcase dinner in Manama on the eve of the 7th Islamic Financial
Services Board (IFSB) annual summit, he did not disappoint, albeit privately,
his aides did suggest that he toned down some of his
remarks.
The theme of his speech, "Islamic Finance - New Hope for the Future
of the Muslim World," may sound aspirational or even idealistic, but the former
Malaysian leader was not bereft of any ideas or
suggestions.

Diplomatic quarter to come up on Jeddah seafront in two
years

JEDDAH: A diplomatic quarter covering eight million square meters
will be built on south Jeddah's seafront, which will include housing for Saudis
and expatriates. The project is expected to begin in early 2011 and be completed
in 24 months.
“It will be very similar to the diplomatic quarter in Riyadh, which
is now 30 years old,” Muhammad Tayeb, director general of the Foreign Ministry's
office in Makkah Province, told Arab News.
He said that foreign consulates in Jeddah would move to the new
quarter as soon as the infrastructure is ready. There are 65 foreign diplomatic
missions and 30 honorary consuls in Jeddah.

Mystery shrouds the case of Canadian woman

RIYADH: A 24-year-old Canadian and Indian dual nationality holder who
alleges she is being kept in the Kingdom against her will was booked on to a
flight for Dubai on Saturday night.
Nazia Quazi was supposed to be flying from Riyadh to Dubai. It,
however, remains a mystery whether she was able to board the flight and whether
her father granted her permission to leave.
Citing privacy laws, a spokeswoman for the Canadian Embassy in Riyadh
declined to make specific comments on the case, but said they are aware of
Quazi’s request for help and are “taking steps” to provide that
help.

After decades of war, Afghanistan’s violence victims speak
out

KABUL: Mothers of slain teenage sons, men wounded by mine blasts and
tearful widows were among Afghans who spoke out Sunday at a conference billed as
the first major gathering of victims of decades of war in their
country.
The so-called “victims’ jirga” at a Kabul hotel brought together
dozens of Afghans from across the country to build pressure on the government
ahead of a national peace assembly called by President Hamid Karzai for later
this month.
Legal advocates who organized the gathering in the capital want to
make sure the voices of the Afghan people who have suffered at the hands of
insurgents, warlords and under the former Taleban and Soviet regimes are heard
at the government’s peace assembly.

Turkish forces, aircraft hit Kurd rebels in
Iraq

ISTANBUL: Turkish special forces pursued Kurdish guerrillas into
northern Iraq and struck suspected targets with helicopter gunships and drones,
killing at least five rebels, the military General Staff said in a
statement.
Separately, two Turkish soldiers were killed on Saturday in two
separate explosions as they patrolled remote areas of Hakkari and Sirnak border
provinces in Turkey, security sources said.
The raid into Iraq, which occurred in a border region south of
Hakkari early on Friday, came after two other soldiers were killed by Kurdistan
Workers Party (PKK) fire, according to the military command's
website.

Iran hangs five Kurd activists

TEHRAN: Iran hanged five members of a Kurdish "anti-revolutionary"
group for various charges, including "moharebe" or waging war against God, the
official IRNA news agency reported on Sunday.
Farzad Kamangar, Ali Haydarian, Farhad Vakili, Shirin Alam-Houli and
Mehdi Eslamian were members of the Party of Free Life of Kurdistan (PJAK), an
offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) which took up arms in 1984 for an
ethnic homeland in southeast Turkey and northwest Iran.
"The five, including one woman, were hanged inside Tehran's Evin
prison on Sunday morning ... They confessed carrying out deadly terrorist
operations in the country in the past years," IRNA said.

ask Hezbollah to give up its arms at a time of heightened Israeli tension and
before agreement on a national defense strategy was
reached.
Israeli allegations last month that Syria had transferred long-range
scud missiles to Hezbollah fueled security concerns although Lebanon and Syria
both denied the charge, while Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah has
refused to comment.
Hezbollah is on the United States' terrorism blacklist but it is also
part of the Lebanese government.
Syria says it only gives Hezbollah political backing and that Israel
may be using the accusation as a pretext for a military
strike.

the sidelines of the US-Saudi Business Opportunities Forum April 28-29 in
Chicago.
US President Barack Obama's vision of interfaith harmony as expounded
in historic June 2009 address to the Muslim world from Cairo is now beginning to
unfold, and I could notice the positive developments that are taking place in
the United States.

Iraq PM orders inquiry into death of Sunni imam

BAGHDAD - Iraqi Prime
Minister Nuri al-Maliki on Sunday called for the establishment of a committee to
investigate the murder of a senior Sunni Muslim leader in Baghdad last
week.
“The head of the Iraqi armed forces (Maliki) ordered the formation of
an investigative committee over the murder of Sheikh Abdul Jalil al-Fahdawi on
Wednesday,” a statement from the premier’s office said.
Fahdawi was the number two in the Sunni Waqf (religious endowments
office) and the deputy head of the Committee of Religious Scholars of Iraq, a
rival to the Sunni Muslim Scholars Association, which was close to the Sunni
insurgency which fought the US and Iraqi army after the invasion of Iraq in
2003.
He was gunned down alongside two of his bodyguards and a relative
near his home and mosque in Amriyah, a western district of the Iraqi capital,
early on Wednesday.

A bullet in Baghdad, a son’s need, a mother’s
love

are mothers who will spend today missing sons and daughters fighting overseas.
There are women who have lost children in those wars, for whom Mother’s Day will
never be the same.
And then there is Eva Briseno.
Joseph Briseno Jr., Eva’s 27-year-old son, is one of the most
severely wounded soldiers ever to survive. A bullet to the back of his head in a
Baghdad marketplace in 2003 left him paralyzed, brain-damaged and blind, but
awake and aware of his condition.
Eva takes care of “Jay” in her suburban Virginia home where the
family room has been transformed into an intensive care unit, with the breathing
machine and tubes he needs to stay alive.

Serial bomb attacks in Iraq, 68 killed

BAGHDAD: An apparently co-ordinated series of attacks targeting
security forces and a Shiite mosque in Iraq killed 68 people on Monday in the
worst violence to hit the country in more than a fortnight.
The bloodshed began in Baghdad where shootings with automatic weapons
against six police or army checkpoints in eastern and western sectors of the
city accounted for seven of the dead, an interior ministry official said.

Man held at Karachi airport with circuits in
shoes

KARACHI, Pakistan: Pakistani airport authorities detained a passenger
after electrical circuits and batteries were found in the soles of his tennis
shoes, officials said Monday.
An initial investigation showed that the devices were used for
massaging the feet, but the circuits could have other uses and authorities were
continuing to examine them, senior police official Tanvir Aalam Odho said.
Similar materials can be used in the construction of bombs.
The man, Faiz Mohammad, was arrested Sunday night at the Karachi
airport, said Munir Ahmed, a spokesman for the airport security force. The
materials were detected by a scanner. Ahmed said each shoe contained a small
circuit connected to two AAA batteries.
