CIA Forged Iraq Intelligence, New Book by Ron Suskind Says

The Huffington Post   |   August 5, 2008 08:14 AM

Ron Suskind, author of "The Price of Loyalty" and "The One Percent Doctrine," is out with a new book that includes CIA forgery of pre-war intelligence, the Politico reports:

A new book by the author Ron Suskind claims that the White House ordered the CIA to forge a back-dated, handwritten letter from the head of Iraqi intelligence to Saddam Hussein.

Suskind writes in "The Way of the World," to be published Tuesday, that the alleged forgery - adamantly denied by the White House - was designed to portray a false link between Hussein's regime and al Qaeda as a justification for the Iraq war.

The author also claims that the Bush administration had information from a top Iraqi intelligence official "that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq - intelligence they received in plenty of time to stop an invasion."

George Tenet, director of the CIA at the time, responds:

There was no such order from the White House to me nor, to the best of my knowledge, was anyone from CIA ever involved in any such effort.

It is well established that, at my direction, CIA resisted efforts on the part of some in the Administration to paint a picture of Iraqi-Al Qa'ida connections that went beyond the evidence. The notion that I would suddenly reverse our stance and have created and planted false evidence that was contrary to our own beliefs is ridiculous.

There are undoubtedly many other errors in the book - but these are the first ones of which I've been made aware. One would think a serious journalist would have, at a minimum, asked the supposed participants if what he was prepared to write was consistent with the facts. Mr. Suskind never contacted me on anything regarding this book. I suppose he had a story that fell into the category of: "too good to check."

Asked about Tenet's reaction on NBC's "Today," Suskind said it's "part of George's memory issue." Watch:

The White House issued its own denial: deputy press secretary Tony Fratto said, "The notion that the White House directed anyone to forge a letter from Habbush to Saddam Hussein is absurd."

Suskind responded that the White House "is all but obligated to deny this."

"If they go in the other direction, I think they're probably going to have to start firing people," he told the AP.

The Forged Iraqi Letter: What Just Happened?

Evidence. A secret that has been judiciously kept for five years just spilled out. All of what follows is new, never reported in any way:

By Ron Suskind

Posted August 5, 2008 | 01:09 PM (EST)

The Iraq Intelligence Chief, Tahir Jalil Habbush -- a man still carrying a $1 million reward for capture, the Jack of Diamonds in Bush's famous deck of wanted men -- has been America's secret source on Iraq. Starting in January of 2003, with Blair and Bush watching, his secret reports began to flow to officials on both sides of the Atlantic, saying that there were no WMD and that Hussein was acting so odd because of fear that the Iranians would find out he was a toothless tiger. The U.S. deep-sixed the intelligence report in February, "resettled" Habbush to a safe house in Jordan during the invasion and then paid him $5 million in what could only be considered hush money.

In the fall of 2003, after the world learned there were no WMD -- as Habbush had foretold -- the White House ordered the CIA to carry out a deception. The mission: create a handwritten letter, dated July, 2001, from Habbush to Saddam saying that Atta trained in Iraq before the attacks and the Saddam was buying yellow cake for Niger with help from a "small team from the al Qaeda organization."

The mission was carried out, the letter was created, popped up in Baghdad, and roiled the global newcycles in December, 2003 (conning even venerable journalists like Tom Brokaw). The mission is a statutory violation of the charter of the CIA, and amendments added in 1991, prohibiting the CIA from conducting disinformation campaigns on U.S. soil.

So, here we go again: the administration is in full attack mode, calling me names, George Tenet is claiming he doesn't remember any such thing -- just like he couldn't remember "slam dunk" -- and reporters are scratching their heads. Everything in my book is on the record, with many sources. And so, we watch and wait....

And so we watch and wait?? Yeah, until hell freezes over.

The Constitution is dead and both parties and all 3 branches of government are corrupt. so, now let's hear those inane pleas to contact your Representative and Senator or sillier yet, calls "to take back our country".

Well, not me pal. I won't get exercised by pointless endeavor.

I have been asked to tell you this. It comes from THE LORD. The two sources Mr. Suskind quotes in his book about the forged letter from the head of the Iraqi Intelligence service to Saddam, who work for the CIA are recanting their stories because they are being threatended. They are being threatened by Evil!

Congress will hold hearings, ... isn't that right Senator Reid and Representative Pelosi? As for legal consequences, I am certain the good judge Mukasey will get right on an investigation of this. DOJ probably has the FBI working on this right now, ... right Mr. Mueller.

Thank you Mr. Suskind. The truth stands on its own, and has staying power. Its bearers catch hell, as you, Scott McLellan and the Wilsons have discovered.

It must be tedious for the White House press corps to hear Dana Perino castigate truthtellers day in and day out. While there is no shame in this administration, we can hope there might be some accounting at some point in the future.

Listen, if Dems (and I am one) wanted real change, with a real spine, they should have nominated Kucinich. If they wanted experience, they should've nominated Biden or Dodd (OK, maybe Richardson). But they--we--didn't. We nominated the guy who took everybody's breath away, who was (admittedly) great on TV and great in speeches, but comparatively short on record, and now we're seeing why that may have been a bad idea--although he may win anyway, and I hope he does. But even he has said he's not going after the top guys. So...get used to it, I guess.

Why would we hope that there will be an accounting?

It seems abundantly clear to me that nobody--including the Democratic nominee--intends to hold this criminal administration criminally responsible for anything. Democratic representatives and senators have evidence dripping off their shoes and falling on their heads and shoulders every day, but they say there's not enough to charge anybody, it wouldn't be in the country's interest, blah blah blah.

These people keep saying they're not going to impeach or prosecute because "the American people want us to be working on the real problems we have going forward," or whatever. Really? Why does one preclude the other? And where do they get the idea that the average Joe out here wouldn't absolutely LOVE to see some of these criminals--including Bush himself--held responsible? Do they really think we want to see them all walk away and go on to big-money careers as authors and lecturers and heroes of the right? How much would it do to restore our reputation in the world for other nations to see us hold these criminals accountable?

What all this really means is, if you're highly-placed enough, you can engage in criminal activity that leads to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, and you'll escape without a scratch. A few of your underlings might get a little bump now and then, but that's it, and who cares? That's why they're there. Same old same old.

I don't think that most Americans can conceive of what will surely happen in the next couple years. The only asset we have that other countries don't have is a bloated military with access to a staggering amount of nuclear weapons. Those weapons will become pawns in a disasterous effort to our status and respect...both of which are much lower than we are aware thanks to a media that continually lies to a numb public. "America" is, indeed, over and what it will become is the legacy that our generation (baby boomers) have left our children. It is a disgrace that we have pinned our hopes on the likes of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. We now know that they are just the other side of the same coin. I see prison labor camps and a ruling class in Dubai.

I am impressed with the bloggers who blog at Huffington Post. Yes, there is still intelligent life in the USA. I was really beginning to wonder.

Perhaps Mr. Suskind could start a web cite for those of us who feel passionately that the Bushies and neocons should not go unpunished for the unnecessary death and destruction they have caused. We need to work on our elected officials, including Obama should he become president, if Bush is leaves office without being held accountable.

A low apporval rating and historical disdain for his presidency is not enough for the damage he and his abetters have done to the US and to Iraq. They have abused power and broken laws. What does it say about our system of government if they are not penalized as any ordinary citizen would be?

aspen, as you well know, Buch & Company have been above the law from day one when they stole the election. I agree that Bush should be impeached even if he has less that three months in office because if he is under investigation to be impeached, at least it would take away his ability to pardon more people who deem themselves above the law. Enough is enough. America Wake Up!

Having read all of your books, Mr. Suskind, I have always been impressed with your impeccable and deeply researched material and your attention to getting even the most minute detail absolutely correct. You have organized this material into a format and narrative that is both lyrical and riveting. Your books show a level of skill and writing craftsmanship that is unparalleled in today's American journalism.

I have no doubt that this book is equally thorough and look forward to reading it.

Truly, thank you for your incredibly hard work and dedication. Being a good journalist is extremely difficult under the best of circumstances, and these last seven years have clearly been among the worst and most dangerous times for journalists.

Again, many thanks, Mr. Suskind. Fine work.

In the overall scheme of things, does it really matter? Tahir Jalil Habbush could just as easily been lying then as now.

Next you will be telling us all those gassed villagers weren't really dead.

The fact of the matter is, if we hadn't gone into Iraq, by now Hussein would have had nuclear weapons if for no other reason than Iran is threatening to obtain them...I think.

We went into Iraq to prevent Hussein from acquiring weapons of mass destruction, that we did. Time will tell if the second reason for going into Iraq will pay off, that of putting US forces on both flanks of Iran -- something tells me it will.

DavidFarrar . "The fact of the matter is, if we hadn't gone into Iraq, by now Hussein would have had nuclear weapons if for no other reason than Iran is threatening to obtain them...I think." . .This statement is ridiculous . .You begin with "The fact of the matter . . and end with I think" I believe GWB lied about Iraq and this guy ( Tahir Jalil Habbush) does not matter . .GWB would have said anything to go to war with Iraq. . .. Hussein was nowhere near acquiring Nukes. I believe GWB went into Iraq to try and create a Democracy in the middle east. I have always said this from the start of the war . .and I still believe it to be true . . If Iraq does become a Democracy . .GWB will be vindicated. I for one can not stand him and will be glad when he is out of office. BTW . . .I voted for him the first time. . .Lord have mercy of my soul.

I do believe you are sincere in your view but it stretches your credibility to think that with all of the evidence at this point quite to the opposite of what you state, "We went into Iraq to prevent Hussein from acquiring weapons of mass destruction;" we didn't find a darn thing and now their house of cards is falling all around them.

You're still hanging onto the idea that we went into this sovereign nation to do something worthwhile for the Iraqis and the world as a whole.

Now... relax, take a deep breath and say aloud to yourself "I was mugged" ... "We were hoodwinked" ...

"They lied to us"... now take another deep breath and just let that sink in slowly. It wont be hard.

Just keep saying that over and over. And it will finally come to you. The clouds will part and the light will fill your soul and you will say to yourself "Never again will let this present government pull the wool over my eyes about their quest for empire and OIL."

I have no problem saying, we were lied to. I have no problem saying our congress allowed themselves to be duped and failed by turning over such power to one person. I can even admit we killed people we didn't have to based upon these lies. That doesn't mean that if Iraq were to become a democratic no sectarian government there would be some good in the mountains of bad. It would allow other nations to see a more secular, yet religiously rich nation, succeed and prosper.

Of course not gonna happen as far as I can see. And if it does, it could have been done by Bush Sr. early on. Saddam was a product of cultural upbringing. The problems in his nation and region shaped him. He did not rise out of a vacuum. Getting Rid of Saddam should never be the measure of success. Alot of people still agree with the man and we didn't kill all of them.

On what evidence do you base your supposition that "if we hadn't gone into Iraq, by now Hussein would have had nuclear weapons if for no other reason than Iran is threatening to obtain them." Have you been awake at all for the last two years? There WAS no nuclear weapons program in Iraq, it had been dismantled after the first Gulf War. It isn't just Habbush who said it. Read the Senate Select Intelligence Committee report from this June on Iraq intelligence. Iraq couldn't have developed a nuclear weapon by now because their program had been dismantled; there was NO nuclear weapons capability in Iraq. What is about the word "No" you don't understand? Every sentence in your post is a complete non-sequitur from the previous one. The problem is...you don't think.

Invading Iraq was an aggressive war, an attack on a country that did not threaten us, and the same would be true of any U.S. (or Israeli) attack on Iran. They are war crimes, by definition. People like you who just blithely accept that this country (or any country) has the right to wage aggressive war are what is WRONG with this country. Your lack of information, your lack of reasoning ability, and your lack of any sense of the founding principles of this republic are ruining this country.

Look, no laws were broken. The letter was not forged on US soil because it was written by Habbush in his safe house in JORDAN *not* the USA. And if Habbush wrote it then it can't be a forgery can it? Nevermind that it was written years after the fact, it was probably just a handwritten copy of the original one that Saddam successfully hid (along with the WMD) before the US liberation began. A bit like how someone re-typed that Air National Guard AWOL report on GW Bush because the original one had been 'lost'. Honestly everyone, just chill out. Well, as usual, the intellectually lazy corporate media slugs can't be bothered to pursue this story. Why is it that we only have two outlets -- HuffPost and Countdown with Keith Olbermann -- who explore anything of substance, in an in-depth fashion? All the other stories have been perfunctory -- often leading with "White House denies claims made in book" -- with no follow up.

Is this corporate-media right wing bias? Or just the shallow superficiality of reporters who have decided that they have to dumb down their coverage for consumption by the uneducated masses?
