Taliban bomb girls’ school near Peshawar

PESHAWAR: The Taliban bombed another government girls’ high school in the Landi Arbab area of Peshawar on Monday, police and local residents said. Local residents told Daily Times that terrorists planted the explosives around the school during load shedding, which had exploded at 2am. According to police officials, the blast damaged the walls and windows of the school but the institution’s watchman remained safe. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Education Minister Sardar Hussain Babak said that the number of schools destroyed due to the massive floods and terrorist attacks had risen to 2,000 and Rs 5 billion would be required for their reconstruction. Babak said that the floods had damaged around 900 schools in the province out of which 226 had been completely destroyed. The provincial education minister said that around 1,000 schools had been destroyed due to terrorist attacks. He said that more than 50 percent of the flood affectees who had taken refuge in government schools had returned to their homes.

Angelina Jolie meets flood victims in Pakistan

JALOZAI, Pakistan — American movie star Angelina Jolie met flood victims in northwestern Pakistan on Tuesday and appealed to the international community to provide aid needed to help the country recover from its worst natural disaster.
The flow of aid money has stalled in recent days, and officials expressed hope the two-day visit by Jolie — who serves as a "goodwill ambassador" for the U.N.'s refugee agency — will convince foreign countries and individuals to open their wallets.
The 35-year-old actress said she met with many people whose lives have been devastated by the floods, including mothers who lost their children and an elderly Pakistani couple who feared they would never be able to rebuild the home they lost.
"I am very moved by them and I hope that I am able to, today and tomorrow, be able to do something to help bring attention to the situation for all of the people in need in Pakistan," Jolie told reporters after visiting a refugee camp in the Jalozai area.
She toured the area wearing a long black robe and a black headscarf adorned with a thin red stripe — the kind of conservative clothing worn by many Muslim women in Pakistan.
The floods began in the northwest at the end of July after extremely heavy monsoon rains and slowly surged south along the Indus River, swallowing up hundreds of villages and towns and killing more than 1,700 people. Another 17 million have been affected by the floods, and many will need emergency assistance to survive.

The United Nations issued an appeal for $460 million in emergency funds on Aug. 11, but only $294 million, or 64 percent, has been received so far, and donations have more or less dried up in recent days.
Ajay Chhibber, a U.N. assistant secretary general, said he hopes Jolie's visit will have "a very big impact" on the inflow of aid money and will keep people focused on the crisis.
"We need more ... well-known figures who can keep the spotlight and focus because people tend to forget internationally," said Chhibber, who is also the U.N. development agency's regional director for Asia. He spoke to reporters during a visit to Islamabad.

US drone kills five in North Wazirstan

PESHAWAR: A US drone fired two missiles at a vehicle carrying militants in Pakistan's northwestern tribal area, near the Afghan border on Monday, killing five rebels, an official said.
The strike occurred in Khar Qamar, a village in Datta Khel area, and was the fourth drone attack the past four days, a senior security official in the area told AFP.
“The US drone fired two missiles at the militants' vehicle, killing five rebels,” he said.

Draconian Kashmir law may be repealed

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir government is engaged in talks with the central government over the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act from the state, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said Monday.
“We are engaged in talks with the center on two issues — softening the harsh nature of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act and its repeal from some of the districts of the valley and Jammu region where the role of the army has become minimal and where such powers are not needed at all,” he told reporters on the sidelines of a function at Balwal, near Jammu.
“The state government is in the process of identifying these areas,” the chief minister said.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Monday the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) will meet here later this week for a “threadbare” discussion on the situation in Kashmir, but cautioned that he can’t pull off a miracle to resolve the crisis.
“A meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security is being called shortly to discuss the situation in the Kashmir Valley,” Singh said in an interaction with journalists at his residence.
“I cannot promise you that I will produce a rabbit out of my hat...the country must learn to be patient,” he added.
Alluding to seething unrest in the valley since June 11, the prime minister underlined the need for a different attitude to riot control.
No lethal weapons but more humane methods should be used to deal with the crowds, he said.
“We are still groping for a solution,” a candid prime minister said while pointing out that the Kashmir problem has existed for 63 years and that Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi had all attempted to tackle it when they were the prime minister.
Meanwhile, security forces fired on protesters hurling stones at them in Indian Kashmir on Monday, killing four people and wounding at least 17 other demonstrators, police said.
For the last three months, Kashmir has been roiled by demonstrations and clashes between protesters opposed and government forces. The deaths bring to 68 the number of people killed in the civil unrest.
Four people, including a 17-year-old boy, were killed when government forces fired live ammunition to disperse protesters in Palhalan, a village north of Srinagar.
Local residents said there was no clash with the troops, but soldiers fired when the protesters refused to disperse. The state government has ordered a probe into the shooting incident.
“A clash had occurred near a highway in the morning and much after that we were peacefully protesting in the village,” said resident Meraj-ud-Din.
Later, as news of the shooting spread, thousands of people from Palhalan and neighboring villages chanting “Go India, go back” and “We want freedom” marched to a nearby highway and blocked it.
Police and paramilitary soldiers fired warning shots and tear gas to quell those protests, said the officer. There were no reports of injuries.
Police launched a probe into Monday’s shooting. “Senior police officers have taken a serious view of the firing. Ammunition of the policemen is being checked to fix the responsibility,” an official statement said.
Meanwhile, an Indian Army spokesman said Monday that three suspected rebels were killed in an exchange of gunfire in a remote forest in northern Handwara district of Kashmir.
No casualties were reported among the Indian soldiers, Lt.
Col. J.S. Brar said in Srinagar.
There was no independent confirmation of the army’s claim.

Danish 'Mohammed' cartoonist to receive German prize

Danish cartoonist Kurt Westergaard, who in 2005 portrayed the Prophet Mohammed wearing a bomb in his turban, is to receive the M100 Media Prize in Germany Wednesday, organisers said.
The prize is to be awarded for Westergaard's 'unbending engagement for freedom of the press and freedom of opinion, and for his courage to defend these democratic values despite threats of death and violence,' the prize committee said.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel is to deliver the keynote speech at the ceremony, held in the Sanssouci palace in Potsdam and attended by editors and publishers from Europe's top media companies.

Iraqi troops in the spotlight as bombers kill 12

BAGHDAD — Iraqi security forces were under the spotlight on Monday after a coordinated suicide attack on an army complex killed 12 people, with US troops among those who fired back in a bid to repel the operation.
American involvement in the response to Sunday’s attack was the first reported such engagement for US forces in Baghdad since they declared an official end to combat operations in Iraq five days ago.
The morning attack targeted Rusafa military command headquarters, which only three weeks ago was hit by a massive suicide bombing that killed dozens of young men preparing to sign up.

Pak appeals people to boycott Indian channels

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's electronic media watchdog has sought the people's cooperation to black out Indian television channels on domestic cable networks, conceding that some of them had resurfaced after recently being taken off the airwaves.
Acting on an order of the Supreme Court, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) recently barred cable operators from relaying Indian channels that do not have landing rights for the country.
Among the channels taken off cable networks were highly popular ones like Star Plus, Star Movies, Star One, Sahara One, SET Max, B4U Music, Zee Music, Zee Cinema, Peace TV and Quran TV.
The move irked viewers across Pakistan, especially the numerous fans of Indian soaps and Bollywood movies.

Oz Muslim leaders criticise Islamic cleric's 'call for beheading' Dutch politician

Canberra, Sept 6 (ANI): Australian Muslim leaders have condemned Islamic preacher, Feiz Mohammad, for his hate speech suggesting beheading the Dutch anti-Islamic politician Geert Wilders, who is on trial for "inciting hatred" against Muslims after making comments about Islam in an interview.
Feiz Mohammad also said that anyone who "mocks, laughs or degrades Islam," should be beheaded.
Anyone who mocks, laughs or degrades Islam like Wilders should be executed by chopping off his head," The Sydney Morning Herald quoted him, as saying in a speech at a sermon in Campbelltown last week.
Islamic leaders like Muhammad Wahlid, President of the Islamic Association of Australia, and Sheikh Fedaa Majzoub, the vice-president of the NSW branch of the National Imams Council, have criticised his controversial speech.

Um Al-Haitham, whose husband sits in jail for assassination of president Anwar Sadat, plans to run for office.
The wife of a jailed Egyptian Jihadist leader has announced her intention to run for office in the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for November.
Um Al-Haitham is the wife of 'Aboud Al-Zommor, a senior leader in the Egyptian Islamic Jihad (EIJ) who masterminded the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in 1981.
The core of Um Al-Haitham’s political platform was revealed in an interview with the Arab daily A-Sharq Al-Awsat on Monday.
She told the daily that her decision to run depended on her husband’s agreement, as well as that of her brother, Tariq Al-Zommor, also imprisoned for his involvement in the assassination. Although both of their life sentences expired in 2001 they are still being held in prison.

Muslims can marry irrespective of their nationalities

DUBAI - Head of the family court at the Dubai Courts Judge Salem Obaid Othman has ruled that the marriage officiants in the emirate of Dubai have the legal authority to solemnize contracts of marriage between Muslims, regardless of their nationality, provided that the couple are legal residents in the Emirate.
The system earlier in force in Dubai did not give this right to the Marriage officiant except in the case of citizens of GCC countries. Even if each of the spouses hailed from different countries of the 6-member GCC states, the officiant could perform a marriage ceremony. In the case of other nationalities, the marriage officiant could solemnize a contract if both the bride and groom hailed from the same country. But if their nationalities differed, it necessitated a special written permission from the President of the Courts to officiate a marriage.

"The clerics from the state are going abroad in the holy month of Ramzan for performing religious discourses and 'taqrir' (lectures). During this month, people find solace in their lectures and spare time from their busy schedule," leading Shia cleric Maulana Yasoob Abbas said.
Alluding to the request of their followers during the fasting month, the clerics visit Gulf countries like Saudi Arab, Dubai, Iraq and Iran, he said.

TTP says it will continue suicide attacks in Pakistan

MIRAMSHAH: The Taliban said Tuesday they would continue to target Pakistani security forces with suicide attacks as they claimed responsibility for the latest blast that killed 19, its spokesman said.
“We are targeting Pakistani security forces because the government has allowed America to launch drone attacks on us,” Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesman Azam Tariq told AFP by telephone.
“Rather it is on the Pakistan government's behest that drone attacks target us,” he said.
“We will continue suicide attacks on security forces. Civilians should avoid proximity with them.”

Is this the Eid that Kashmir wants?

A few days left for Eid and Srinagar is like a ghost town. It is the holy month of Ramadan and in normal course, the bazaars should have been chock-a-block full with shoppers. Instead there are security forces patrolling the streets trying to save themselves from arsonists and ensuring that the curfew is not disrupted.
On other days, strike calls by the separatist Hurriyat leaders keep shops shut and people inside their homes. The daily fast or 'roza' is broken in silence inside tomb like homes with just a frugal iftar. The elaborate preparations are missing. Very few families can afford to buy dry-fruit and more pertinently, who will risk going out into the streets to buy them?
There is no festivity evident anywhere. It can only be termed a cruel irony that Thereek-e-Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani has called on Kashmiris to observe an 'austere' Eid. Full report at:

Afghan foreign troops death toll hits 500 for 2010

KABUL: The number of foreign troops killed in Afghanistan this year has reached at least 500, compared with 521 in all of 2009, according to an independent monitoring site on Monday and a tally compiled by Reuters.
The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force said an ISAF service member was killed in an insurgent attack in the east on Sunday. No other details were immediately available.
There has been a sharp increase in foreign military deaths, many of them American, as foreign troops launch more operations to counter a growing Taleban-led insurgency that has spread out of traditional strongholds in the south and east.
At least five ISAF troops have been killed since Friday, including the first Georgian killed in the conflict.

Commanders seek 2,000 new troops for Afghanistan

BRUSSELS - The US and NATO commander in Afghanistan has requested another 2,000 troops for the foreign force fighting the Taliban insurgency, despite waning support for the war in troop-contributing nations, NATO officials said.
NATO officials said the request by General David Petraeus to bolster the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was made last week and included a call for about 750 more personnel to train the Afghan security forces.
“It has been determined that around 2,000 forces will be required,” a NATO official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. “There is an ongoing discussion on this issue.”
The request comes before a visit to Washington on Monday and Tuesday by NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

Harkat operative Zandal taken on fresh 5-day remand

Mufti Mainuddin alias Abu Zandal, operational commander and trainer of the banned Islamist outfit Harkatul Jihad, was remanded in a fresh five-day police remand on Monday in connection with one of the two cases filed for the August 21 grenade attacks.
Third additional chief metropolitan magistrate Ali Hossain passed the order after Criminal Investigation Department’s special superintendent Abdul Kahhar Akand, also investigation officer of the case, produced him in his court and sought a seven-day remand.
The CID filed the case under the Explosive Substances Act for detonating grenades on an Awami League rally on August 21, 2004. Earlier, the CID took Zandal on a seven-day remand.

Lawyer says Iranian woman could be stoned soon

TEHRAN, Iran — The lawyer for an Iranian woman sentenced to be stoned on an adultery conviction says he and her children are worried the delayed execution could be carried out soon.
Javid Houtan Kian says a moratorium on death sentences for Ramadan is running out with the conclusion this week of the Muslim holy month.
The lawyer said Monday that Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani’s stoning sentence could happen “any moment.”
The sentence was put on hold in July after an international outcry and it is now being reviewed by Iran’s supreme court.
Ashtiani was convicted in 2006 of having an “illicit relationship” with two men after the murder of her husband and was sentenced to 99 lashes. Later that year, she was also convicted of adultery and sentenced to be stoned.

Five killed in vicious attack north of Baghdad: police

SAMARRA, Iraq — Five Iraqi businessmen who were involved in building a police station and a youth centre north of Baghdad were killed in a gun and knife attack overnight, police and medical officials said on Monday.
The murders occurred in the al-Shouhada neighbourhood of Samarra, 110 kilometres (68 miles) north of the capital, a lieutenant colonel, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told AFP. Two other men were wounded, he said.
“They killed them with guns and knives,” the officer said. “The men were from another area and were working in Samarra to build a youth centre and a police department in the city.”
Doctor Khalid al-Bazi at Samarra city hospital said five bodies had been received and that three of the victims been shot to death and the other two shot and stabbed.

Thousands of Muslims thronged mosques and other religious places Monday night to offer special prayers in observance of Lailatul Qadr, the night when the first verses of the Qur’an were revealed to Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH).
The devout Muslims joined milad, zikr, Qur’an khwani and religious discussion in mosques and their houses in line with the traditional practices as the night is better than 1,000 months.
This is one of the holiest and most blessed nights, which is likely to occur on one of the odd nights on the last ten days of Ramadan and most likely to be the 27th.
On this holy occasion, the Muslims also visit graveyards to seek blessings of the Almighty for eternal peace of the departed souls of their near and dear ones.

Charity is in the air, fitra stalls spring up

RIYADH: Stalls selling fitra rice have sprung up all over Riyadh as the holy month of Ramadan enters its penultimate phase.
Fitra is a religious tax or form of zakat paid when Muslims stop fasting at the end of Ramadan. It is known as Zakat Al-Fitr.
Giving fitra is obligatory on the eve of Eid Al-Fitr. It should be kept aside and paid before Eid prayers or before midday for those who have performed their prayers.
It is necessary to have the obligatory intention (niyyah) of giving fitra for Almighty’s pleasure only. Fitra is obligatory for every Muslim who has reached puberty, sane, financially able, and conscious.

59 percent of Israeli teens don’t want Arab students in their class

RAMALLAH: Two-thirds of Israeli teens say that Arab students living in Israel do not enjoy equal rights in schools, according to a study.
The survey, prepared for the “Education in the Digital Age” conference in the northern city of Haifa on Monday, also revealed that 59 percent of teens aged 15 to 18 believe that Arab students should not have equal rights in schools.
According to the survey, 96 percent of respondents want Israel to be a Jewish and democratic state.

Hollywood joins West Bank protest

RAMALLAH: More than 150 American and British actors, writers, directors and other artists signed a letter of support for the Israeli actors who declared they would not perform in West Bank settlements.
The petition came ten days after the Israeli actors caused a storm when they released a petition stating they would not perform in West Bank settlements. Their move was prompted by reports that the theater companies were planning performances at the new cultural center in Ariel settlement.
Israeli media sources said that the petition, organized by the Jewish Voice for Peace organization, was signed by such Hollywood figures as Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon, award-winning playwright Tony Kushner (“Angels in American,” “Munich”), actress Jennifer Tilley (“Bullets Over Broadway”), Mandy Patinkin (“Princess Bride”), acclaimed British actress Vanessa Redgrave, co-founder of the Cameri Theater in Tel Aviv, Theodore Bikel and character actor and writer Wallace Shawn, who played the principal in “Clueless.”

Pakistan seeks royal pardon for prisoners

RIYADH: A senior Pakistani diplomat has sought royal clemency for about 300 Pakistani prisoners languishing in Saudi jails whose families have been rendered homeless by floods in Pakistan.
Pakistani Ambassador Umar Khan Alisherzai appealed to the Saudi government on Sunday to release and repatriate prisoners who have been convicted for petty crimes.
“The total number of Pakistani prisoners across the Kingdom exceeds 4,000, including those whose cases are still to be tried by Saudi courts.”
He said Saudi authorities had assured him they would facilitate the release of prisoners, referring to recent talks with Prince Naif, second deputy premier and minister of interior.
He added that the Pakistani government in Islamabad is also taking the necessary steps for the release of its civilians in foreign jails, including Saudi Arabia.

Afghans protest US church's plans to burn Qur'an

KABUL: Hundreds of Afghans railed against the United States and called for President Barack Obama's death at a rally in the capital Monday to denounce an American church's plans to burn the Islamic holy book on 9/11.
The crowd in Kabul, numbering as many as 500, chanted "Long live Islam" and "Death to America" as they listened to fiery speeches from members of parliament, provincial council deputies, and Islamic clerics who criticized the US and demanded the withdrawal of foreign troops from the country. Some threw rocks when a US
military convoy passed, but speakers shouted at them to stop and told police to arrest anyone who disobeyed.

Panic grips Lahore after 2 low-intensity explosions

LAHORE: Panic gripped the Township locality in south of the city when two low-intensity roadside bombs exploded midnight on Monday.
The first bomb exploded near the house of Deputy Superintendent of Police (Legal) Afzal Hussain at A1 Block, slightly damaging a car, which had been parked outside his house, but injuring no one. According to Hussain’s son Ali Afzal, all his family members were safe. The second device exploded near the office of the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) in C Block. Some eyewitnesses claimed two suspects, who were riding a motorbike, had thrown the device that exploded with a deafening sound. No one was injured in the blast, they said.
Police and BDS officials reached the places of incidents soon after the explosions and collected evidence.
According to Saddar Division Superintendent of Police (SP) Zeeshan Asghar, both blasts were of low-intensity and improvised. However, he said police had launched a search operation to arrest the suspected terrorists and they would arrest them soon. He said the police and BDS teams were combing the area to purge it of any possible explosive device.

Another ASWJ activist shot dead in 12 hours

KARACHI: Another Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) activist was shot dead early Monday morning, the Brigade police said. Barely 12 hours after ASWJ activist Rehan Laiq’s murder in Shah Faisal Colony No 4 on Sunday night, Ghayasuddin Imam Bux was gunned down in Lines Area near the CDGK Parking Plaza, the police said. ASWJ spokesman Ahsanullah Farooqui said when Bux reached the parking plaza near the Makki mosque, some unidentified men opened fire on him, killing him on the spot.
Police took the body to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.
Following the incident, a large number of ASWJ activists and supporters took to the streets. The protesters set tyres ablaze, shouted slogans against the government and demanded the arrest of the murderer. Traffic and business activities were suspended for at least two hours in different areas of the city, including the MA Jinnah Road.However, heavy contingents of police and Rangers personnel rushed to the spot and dispersed the demonstrators. Bux, father of four, was targeted on his way home after dropping off his children at school. He was the ASWJ in-charge for Lines Area where he resided as well.

NEW YORK: American Muslims are boosting security at mosques, seeking help from leaders of other faiths and airing ads underscoring their loyalty to the United States — all ahead of a 9/11 anniversary they fear could bring more trouble for their communities.
Their goal is not only to protect Muslims, but also to prevent them from retaliating if provoked. One September 11 protest in New York against the proposed mosque near ground zero is expected to feature Geert Wilders, the aggressively anti-Islam Dutch lawmaker. The same day in Gainesville, Florida, the Dove World Outreach Center plans to burn copies of the Quran.

Jundullah, the new al Qaeda

Investigations by Daily Times have revealed serious concerns, as according to one official, the peace in Karachi is under “imminent threat” from the newly re-organised Jundallah, which has been working in the city since 2003.
An intelligence official who had been on a hunt went as far as to claim, “Jundullah is the new al Qaeda in Pakistan.”
Daily Times can confirm, while talking to various sources including militant commanders, that the attacks in Lahore, which killed 35 people and injured at least 250, was not just a case of sectarian violence, but was planned and executed by sub-contractors of al Qaeda to spread the insurgency to urban areas of Pakistan where, according to one official, “the new Jundullah and old LeJ were used”.

KP MPs propose joint strategy to fight terrorism

PESHAWAR: Treasury and opposition benches in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly proposed on Monday joint strategy and unity to fight terrorism in the province and vowed war would continue against militants till they were crushed.
The House condemned suicide attacks in Quetta and Lakki Marwat killing 74 innocent people and offered fateha for the deceased.
Minister for Information Mian Iftikhar Hussain said it was time to raise collective voice and devise joint strategy to effectively take action against militants. Iftikhar said militants were regrouping in Darra Adam Khel, Khyber and Mohmand agencies and effective action was needed against them.

Saudi Arabia shuts down websites violating Fatwa orders

Authorities in Saudi Arabia have shut down three websites for violating a Royal decree limiting the issuance of religious edicts (Fatwa) to the kingdom's most senior group of clerics. Saudi telecom regulator, the Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC), has drawn up a list of
clerics whose services break the decree, and that they have been sent messages "warning them to comply".
Among those breaking the ban are clerics who offer fatwas through text messages, some for as much as $ 3 per message, CITC official Saad Al-Shihri told Saudi Gazette.
Regulators have already started barring such services.
