WASHINGTON: At a ceremony at the Pentagon Memorial to mark the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, US President Barack Obama has emphasised that America will "never be at war with Islam.
"As Americans, we will not and never will be at war with Islam.... It was not a religion that attacked us that September day. It was Al-Qaeda, a sorry band of men, which perverts religion," the Dawn quoted Obama as saying.
The president, who was at the Pentagon memorial service to commemorate the 184 people who were killed after a plane hijacked by extremists slammed into the Defense Department headquarters, added, "The perpetrators of this evil act didn't simply attack America; they attacked the very idea of America itself."
In the wake of controversy surrounding the radical Florida pastor's plans of publicly burning copies of the Koran to mark 9/11 and the debate over plans to build a mosque near Ground Zero, Obama urged his compatriots to be "tolerant."
The president said that extremists like Al- Qaeda "may wish to drive us apart but we will not give in to their hatred and prejudice."
However, rallies by rival groups, supporting and opposing the disputed project of building an Islamic cultural center and mosque two blocks away from the attacks site, were to take place nearby soon after the official ceremonies at Ground Zero, breaking an unwritten taboo on open politicization of the anniversary.
September 11, 2001 was a black day in the history of the USA, as Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four aeroplanes and carried out the suicide attacks that ultimately brought down the World Trade Center in New York, slammed into the Pentagon and crashed into a field in Pennsylvania.

Sept. 11: On the eve of the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, US President Barack Obama on Friday strongly defended the building of a mosque near Ground Zero, saying that if one can build a temple then why not a mosque.
“With respect to the mosque in New York, I’ve been pretty clear on my position here,” Mr Obama said when asked about the controversy surrounding the construction of a mosque near the Ground Zero in the New York City. He said the US believes in the inalienable right to allow its citizens to practice their religion freely.
“This country stands for the proposition that all men and women are created equal, that they have certain inalienable rights; one of those inalienable rights is to practice their religion freely,” he argued ahead of the ninth anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people. “And what that means is that if you could build a church on a site, you could build a synagogue on a site, if you could build a Hindu temple on a site, then you should be able to build a mosque on the site,” Mr Obama said. He also remembered the victims of the 9/11 attacks and their families who continue to live with a sense of loss.
“I recognise the extraordinary sensitivities around 9/11. I’ve met with families of 9/11 victims in the past. I can only imagine the continuing pain and anguish and sense of loss that they may go through,” he said. “And tomorrow, we as Americans are going to be joining them in prayer and remembrance,” Mr Obama said.
Most Americans have opposed construction of the planned mosque near Ground Zero, according to the Washington Post-ABC News poll. Most Americans say the planned Muslim community centre and place of worship should not be built in Lower Manhattan, near the site of the Twin Towers which were blown up by Al Qaeda terrorists on September 11, 2001.
Two-thirds of those polled object to the mosque near Ground Zero while a slim majority expresses strongly negative views. As many as 82 per cent of those who oppose the construction say it’s because of the location, although 14 per cent (nine per cent of all Americans) say they would oppose such building anywhere in the country.
Mr Obama also said the US has forced Osama bin Laden “deep underground” but Americans will face an expanded terror threat for years to come from other Al Qaeda extremists “willing to die to kill other people.” The government is no less determined to kill or capture the September 11 architect, he said. But Americans must remember the fight is with Al Qaeda terrorists, not the much wider world of people of Muslim faith. On the eve of the anniversary of the 2001 attacks, Mr Obama sought on Friday to reinforce the country’s founding belief of religious tolerance.
Saturday, he said, should be a day not only to mourn but to show that “we are not at war against Islam. We’re at war against terrorist organisations that have distorted Islam or falsely used the banner of Islam to engage in their destructive acts.” “It’s just a reality of today’s world that there are going to be threats out there,” Mr Obama said. “I think, ultimately, we are going to be able to stamp it out. But it, it’s going to take some time.”
He also underlined his determination to press ahead with negotiations between Israel and Palestine even if the ongoing direct talks between the leaders of the two countries break down, saying “it’s a risk worth taking.” “It’s a risk worth taking because the alternative is status quo that is unsustainable. And so if these talks break down, we’re going to keep on trying,” Mr Obama said at a White House news conference. Highlighting the United States’ active participation in the West Asia peace process, he said: “So what we’ve done is to bring the parties together, to try to get them to recognize that the path for Israeli security and Palestinian sovereignty can only be met through negotiations.”
However, Mr Obama acknowledged that these are going to be “tough negotiations.” “There are enormous hurdles between now and our end point. There are going to be a whole bunch of folks in the region who want to undermine these negotiations,” he said. “But it is a risk worth taking, because I firmly believe that it is in America’s national-security interests, as well as Israel’s national-security interests as well as in the interests of the Palestinian people, to arrive at a peace deal.”

Mob attacks J&K Minister's house in Anantnag

SRINAGAR: Police fired in air and lobbed tear gas shells after a mob attacked the ancestral house of Jammu and Kashmir education minister Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed in Anantnag district on Sunday.
"A mob resorted to heavy stone pelting on the house of Sayeed at Damhal-Khushipora in Kokernag area", 55 kms from here, a police spokesman said, adding police fired tear smoke shells to disperse the attackers which left one unidentified person injured.
The minister, who had gone to his native place to celebrate Eid and was present in the house along with his family, escaped unhurt.
"A police party has evacuated the minister to safety and no one from his family was hurt in the incident," official sources said.
Sources said police also fired several rounds in air to control the situation as the protesters tried to storm the house of the Congress leader.
Local Congress workers owing allegiance to Sayeed had staged protests on Saturday against frequent strikes called by the separatist leaders.
The situation in the area continues to be tense, the sources said adding additional police and paramilitary CRPF personnel have been rushed to the spot.

Srinagar burns as Mirwaiz sermon sparks fire on Eid

VIOLENCE triggered by speeches of separatist leaders at Lal Chowk in Srinagar disrupted Eid festivities in the Kashmir Valley on Saturday. Moderate Hurriyat Conference leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chief Yasin Malik addressed a joint rally at Lal Chowk, triggering the protests. Farooq led a procession from the Idgah to Lal Chowk, while Malik led a procession from the TRC ground to the square.
Farooq suddenly addressed the gathering while delivering a sermon. This caught the authorities off guard.
Farooq said Kashmiris won’t be satisfied with the partial recall of the Armed Forces ( Special Powers) Act ( AFSPA). He said New Delhi must revoke the AFSPA and the Public Safety Act from the Valley.
“ The time has come for the Kashmir issue to be resolved in accordance with the wishes of Kashmiris and we should arrive at a solution acceptable to India and Pakistan,” Farooq said.
He sought the release of all political prisoners and youths arrested during the past three months and demanded that international human rights bodies should be allowed to visit Kashmir.
“ All pro- freedom leaders and parties should share a common platform. We want to involve every section of the society in carrying the movement to its logical conclusion,” Farooq said, in a veiled reference to Hurriyat Conference hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
Malik echoed Farooq. He said not a day passed in the Valley without the killing of innocents.
He said Kashmiris were not against India or Indians and that they were only seeking freedom which was their birthright.
Soon after the speeches the gathering split into groups of supporters of the Hurriyat factions and those of Malik. They hoisted flags on the Clock Tower in Lal Chowk and set government buildings on fire.
Protesters in Hazratbal set the Auqaf building, which houses policemen, on fire. They also burned down a police vehicle.
Protests broke out at several other places in the Valley as well.
The police said the protesters attacked police station at Sopore, North Kashmir, and Pulwama and Kunzer, south Kashmir.
Massive pro- freedom rallies were held in the districts of south Kashmir.
Also, protesters clashed with the police and security forces at several places on the Srinagar- Baramulla and Srinagar- Anantnag National highways.
Meanwhile, Geelani was released in the afternoon.
He maintained that the demilitarisation and the right to selfdetermination of Kashmir alone could resolve the dispute.
He, however, advised people to control their emotions and urged them to maintain discipline during protests.

The Florida pastor at the center of an international firestorm for threatening to burn the Quran reaffirmed that he would not go ahead with the event on Saturday.
Radical evangelist Terry Jones first announced on Thursday he had scrapped the mass burning of the Muslim holy book on September 11.
But when his claims that a deal had been struck to relocate a proposed Islamic cultural center in New York dissolved in acrimony, he threatened to go ahead with the event to mark the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.
However in an interview with ABC News on Friday he said: “Right now, we have plans not to do it. We believe that the imam is going to keep his word, what he promised us (on Thursday).“

Quran burning on again? Pastor says maybe

GAINESVILLE(Fla)—The Florida pastor whose plan to burn Qurans on Sept. 11 generated worldwide outrage among Muslims and pressure by the U.S. government to relent said late Thursday that he might not call off the protest after all.
Pastor Terry Jones told NBC News that "we are a little back to square one" after a supposed deal involving a proposed Islamic cultural center in New York evaporated.
At a press conference Thursday afternoon, Jones had said he was canceling the Quran burning because a Muslim imam had assured him that the proposed Islamic center could be moved away from the World Trade Center site in return.
But the imam proposing to build the Islamic center near the World Trade Center denied that a deal had been struck to move the project. "I am glad that Pastor Jones has decided not to burn any Qurans," Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf said in a statement. "However, I have not spoken to Pastor Jones or Imam Musri (of Florida). Aformer Al Qaeda comrade-in-arms has some advice for Osama bin Laden to mark the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, coinciding this year with a row over a threatened Quran-burning by an obscure US pastor that might have given the organisation a new lease of life.
Noman Benotman is a Libyan exjihadi who now devotes himself to combating the message of jihadi extremism. He fought with the mujahideen against the Red Army in Afghanistan but broke with Osama bin Laden in 2000, after urging him to stop his campaign against the United States because, he argued, it was sabotaging the prospects for change in the Arab world.

Preventing Mumbai-II from occurring remains a major foreign policy challenge for the US, the report said.

Tajikistan forces kill 20 Taleban fighters at border

DUSHANBE - Tajikistan’s security authorities said on Saturday they had killed at least 20 Taleban fighters and lost one officer in a clash along the border with Afghanistan.
Khushnud Rakhmatullayev, a spokesman for Tajikistan’s border patrol, said the rebels were killed while attempting to enter the Central Asian republic from the northern provinces of Afghanistan, where NATO-led forces are conducting operations against Taliban insurgents.
“A clash with the use of grenades and automatic weapons took place on Friday night,” Rakhmatullayev said. “As a result a border officer died. We have seven bodies of Taliban fighters, but there are at least 20 (dead).”
Afghanistan’s northern provinces, some of them once considered relatively peaceful, have been drawn into increasing insurgency in recent months.
The clash took place at a river with the fighters hiding on islands some 210 km (130 miles) south of Tajikistan’s capital Dushanbe. Rakhmatullayev said the militants quickly disposed of the dead bodies into the river.

Dalit girl forced to convert to Islam in Pakistan: Report

ISLAMABAD: A 13-year-old Dalit girl was kidnapped and apparently forced to convert to Islam in the Pakistani port city of Karachi, according to a media report on Saturday.
Poonam was kidnapped from her house in Lyari Town in Karachi on Wednesday, her uncle Bhanwroo told the Daily Times newspaper.
When neighbours informed her family of Poonam's presence at a madrassa in Lyari, they went there.
"She was very scared and under the influence of maulvis. She told us they will not let her go, so she will stay with them as a Muslim," said Bhanwroo.
The family contacted police in Chakiwara to lodge an FIR on the kidnapping but they refused to do so, he said.
Lyari's Superintendent of Police Khadim Hussain Rind told the newspaper that lodging an FIR would not make any difference as it will be cancelled during court proceedings.

When Shahrzad Kariman finally saw her imprisoned daughter Shiva Nazar Ahari earlier this month, it was for a brief moment outside the Tehran courtroom where the 26-year-old human rights campaigner had been brought. "We could see her for a few minutes," Kariman told the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran last week. "Just enough to hug her. But we couldn't ask her how the court session went… We didn't know what the charges were prior to the court session."
The charges against Nazar Ahari are among the most serious that can be levelled in Iran: muharebeh (enmity against God), a crime, in theory punishable by death, originally intended to be used against armed gangs and pirates, not dissidents.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – Last month, the Yemen-based deputy leader of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, Said Al Shihri, called on Saudi military personnel to join the extremist movement's jihad to overthrow the Saudi monarchy.
Al Shihri is a former Guantanamo Bay inmate, and a graduate of Saudi Arabia’s much-touted rehabilitation program for detained extremists, the most publicized aspect of its counter-terrorism strategy.

NEW DELHI: Bollywood actor Salman Khan has triggered a controversy by claiming that "too much hype" was created around the 26/11 attack as "elite people were targetted" and that the Pakistani government was not behind it.
In an interview to a Pakistani channel, Salman said: "Too much hype has been created around the 26/11 attacks because elite people were targetted. Attacks have happened in trains and small towns too, but no one talked about it so much."
"Everybody took this up because the Taj and Oberoi hotels were involved. The attacks happened because our security failed," he added.
"Everybody knows that the Pakistani government was not behind it and it was a terrorist attack. Our security had failed. We have had lot of attacks earlier, and all of them were not from Pakistan. They were from within also."

Pakistan's No 1 tennis player Aisam-ul Haq Qureshi went public with an issue that's long dogged his countrymen, pleading with Americans not to treat Pakistan as a "terrorist nation" because of the actions of some extremists.
"Since September 11, every time I come to the States or western countries I feel people have the wrong impression about Pakistan as a terrorist nation," Qureshi told a large crowd which turned up to see the US Open doubles final, which he lost along with his Indian partner, Rohan Bopanna, against the top seeded American twins Bob and Mike Bryan. "I just wanted to declare that we are very friendly, loving and caring people, and we want peace in this world as much as Americans and the rest of the world wants," he added.

Iran ready to release US hiker woman on bail: Prosecutor

TEHRAN: A senior prosecutor said on Sunday that Iran is ready to release Sarah Shourd, one of three US hikers held for more than a year and accused of spying, on bail of around 500,000 dollars.
"For the female defendant (Shourd), bail has been set at five billion Iranian rials (around 500,000 US dollars)," the official IRNA news agency quoted Tehran prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi as saying.
"She can be freed by posting the bail... Her lawyer has been informed."
Shourd was arrested with fellow hikers Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal on July 31, 2009 after straying across the border from neighbouring Iraq.

Four killed in clashes in northern Iraq

BAGHDAD: At least four people were killed and around 10 wounded in clashes between militants and Iraqi security forces in the restive northern province of Diyala, officials said on Sunday.
The clashes erupted on Saturday afternoon in the orchard area of al-Hdaid, near the city of Baquba, 65 km (40 miles) northeast of Baghdad. Baquba is the capital of Diyala, a troubled province where al Qaida and other Sunni insurgents still battle Iraqi security forces. A volatile mix of minority Kurds, majority Shi'ites and Sunnis has made it difficult to bring peace to Diyala. Sadiq Jaafar al-Hussaini, deputy head of Diyala provincial council, said the Iraqi security forces were trying to capture "a den of snipers" in the area. He said four members of the Iraqi army and police were killed. One security source said three policemen and three militants were killed in the fighting, and 10 Iraqi security forces were wounded.

Church sex abuse linked to 13 suicides in Belgium

BRUSSELS: The former Belgian bishop who resigned in April after admitting he sexually abused a nephew for years said he would go into hiding to assess his future, despite calls for him to leave the church immediately.
Roger Vangheluwe said in a statement he would immediately leave an abbey in his bishopry of Bruges, where he has been staying since his April 23 resignation.
Hundreds of sex abuse victims have come forward in Belgium with harrowing accounts of molestation by Catholic clergy that reportedly led to at least 13 suicides and affected children as young as two, a special commission said.
Professor Peter Adriaenssens, chairman of the commission, said the abuse in Belgium may have been even more rampant than the 200-page report suggests.

US drone strike kills three militants in Pakistan: Officials

PESHAWAR: A US missile strike on Sunday killed three militants in Pakistan's northwestern tribal belt, near the Afghan border, officials said.
The strike early Sunday hit Newey Adda village in the Datta Khel area near Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan tribal district, officials said.
"A US drone fired two missiles. The target was a house used by militants as a compound. Three militants have died," a senior security official in Peshawar told AFP.

Addressing some of these issues, Khan pointed out that "education could not create compassion," and urged an end to the violence and bigotry for the sake of the "younger generation."
The sarod performance was also attended by Secretary General Ban Ki-moon who has condemned the Quran burning along with other top officials of the UN
"There is a language that transcends all borders....that is music," he said, noting that the concert was a "timely initiative."

SELECTION TROUBLE University executive council to remove nine faculty members appointed in violation of UGC regulations
The Executive Council of Jamia Millia Islamia has approved the recommendations of a probe panel to sack as many as nine faculty members from the university's prestigious mass communication school, which boasts of actor Shah Rukh Khan among its alumni.
Earlier this year, a probe panel, headed by a retired judge, had observed that these nine teachers at the AJK Mass Communication and Research Centre were appointed in violation of the University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations.
In its latest meeting, the Executive Council decided to accept the probe panel's recommendation following a report of the selection committee that had picked these nine faculty members, top university sources told HT.

At least six killed in US drone strike

MIRAMSHAH: A US missile strike Sunday killed six militants in Pakistan's northwestern tribal belt near the Afghan border, officials said.
The Pakistani Taliban said Tuesday they would continue to target Pakistani security forces with suicide attacks in revenge for the US drone strikes.
“We are targeting Pakistani security forces because the government has allowed America to launch drone attacks on us,” Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesman Azam Tariq told AFP by telephone.
The latest drone attack hit Newey Adda village in the Datta Khel area near Miramshah, the main town in North Waziristan tribal district, they said.
“A US drone fired two missiles. The target was a house used by militants as a compound. Six militants were killed,” a senior security official in Peshawar told AFP, on condition of anonymity.

Nato claims killing five insurgents in Afghanistan

KABUL: A Taliban commander who planned attacking polling stations during next week's elections and four other insurgents have been killed in eastern Afghanistan, Nato said.
The military alliance said in a statement Sunday that Nato and Afghan forces killed the five on Saturday night in a village compound in the Nangarhar province after they displayed “hostile intent”.
It said intelligence reports indicated that the Taliban commander was planning to conduct rocket attacks against voting centres during the September 18 parliamentary elections. The Taliban have vowed to attack polling stations and warned Afghans not to participate in what it called a sham vote.

Two Afghan protesters killed as Quran tensions simmer

KABUL: Afghans protested violently for the third day on Sunday despite a US pastor giving up plans to burn copies of the Quran, with three other cases of desecration of the Muslim holy book likely to stoke their anger further.
Two protesters were shot and killed in eastern Logar province, a district official said, taking to three the death toll in protests staged since Friday.
The furore over pastor Terry Jones's plans to burn copies of the Quran overshadowed the lead-up to commemorations for the Sept. 11 hijacked airliner attacks on the United States.
Word of the intention to burn the Quran had already triggered outrage in Afghanistan and across the Muslim world.
President Barack Obama warned it could hurt the United States deeply abroad, endanger US troops in Afghanistan and risk attacks in US and European cities.
In Afghanistan, angry protesters chanting “Death to America” and “Death to Christians” before clashing with security forces in Logar, south of the capital.
Seven demonstrators were wounded, one seriously, when Afghan security forces opened fire to disperse hundreds of protesters marching to Pul-e-Alam, the capital of Logar, officials said.

Ethnic Serbs, Albanians clash after basketball match

MITROVICA, Kosovo: Ethnic Serbs and Albanians clashed in Kosovo's divided town of Mitrovica, wounding several international peacekeepers, officials said on Sunday.
The clashes began after Turkey beat Serbia 83-82 in a World Basketball Championship match on Saturday night, keeping them from reaching Sunday's final.
The violence highlighted continuing tensions in Mitrovica just days after Belgrade supported a compromise United Nations resolution on Kosovo, agreeing to an EU-backed dialogue with Kosovo to promote cooperation between the divided communities.
"KFOR strongly condemns the violent clashes in Mitrovica," Major General Erhard Buhler, who leads NATO KFOR peacekeepers in Kosovo, said in a statement on Sunday.
"KFOR will not tolerate any violence in Kosovo and I ask the population in Kosovo to help that the troublemakers can be arrested."

Kingdom backs Qatar bid for 2022

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has pledged its support for Qatar in its bid to be the first Middle East country to host the FIFA World Cup in 2022.
"We have full confidence in Qatar's ability to organize the World Cup and ensure its complete success," said Prince Sultan bin Fahd, president of Youth Welfare Presidency, and chairman of the Federation of Arab National Olympic Committees.
In a statement on Friday on the occasion of the official visit to be conducted by the FIFA inspection team to Qatar Sept. 14-16, Prince Sultan said all the sports, technical and manpower capabilities of the Saudi Arabia and Arab Football Federation would be at the service of Qatar.
In his joint statement with Prince Nawaf bin Faisal, deputy president of the Youth Welfare Presidency, Prince Sultan reiterated his support for Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani and Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad, the heir apparent, in order for Qatar to win the right to stage the 2022 World Cup. They commended Qatar's experience in organizing regional and international sporting events and hailed its modern and integrated sports infrastructure facilities.

On a day when the global community remembers the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has remembered the prophetic words spoken on this very day by another Narendra, better known as Swami Vivekananda.
It was on September 11, 1893 that Swami Vivekananda had delivered his famous speech at the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago, Modi has written in his latest blog post. “Swami Vivekananda conquered the world on this day with his spirituality in practice and that too at a time when India was not even independent,” said the CM.
“Had the world followed Swami Vivekananda’s message of universal brotherhood, possibly, 100 years later, it wouldn’t have had to face the fatal day of the World Trade Centre attack,” said Modi in his blog.
Recalling that Swamiji had warned that fanaticism about one’s religious superiority would lead to only bloodshed in the name of religion, Modi said the monk was proved prophetic more than a hundred years later by the WTC attack on September 11, 2001.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday sought cooperation from all classes of people to build a poverty-free digitally enabled golden Bangladesh as dreamt by the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The prime minister sought the cooperation through the media personnel at Ganobhaban after exchanging Eid greetings with her cabinet colleagues, MPs, foreign diplomats, judges, leaders and workers of Awami League (AL) and cross-section of the people.
Men, women and children thronged Ganobhaban in a long queue and conveyed their Eid greetings to the prime minister. Smiling Hasina entertained the guests with sweets and fruits.
She also exchanged greetings with a number of people with disability.
Hasina also greeted the Bangladeshi people living in abroad on the occasion.

Nation celebrates Eid and Ganesh Chaturthi
INDIA on Saturday celebrated Eid- ul- Fitr and Ganesh Chaturthi, as the faithful thronged to mosques and temples to mark the festivals.
Save for Kashmir, where sporadic violence marred the festive spirit, celebrations were mostly peaceful throughout the nation.
In the Capital, two of the biggest congregations took place at the 17th century mosques of Jama Masjid and Fatehpuri near Chandni Chowk.
Hindus, too, joined in the Eid celebrations.
“ There were people, people, people everywhere in our mosque,” Maulvi Mohd Muazzam Ahmed, the Shahi Naib Imam of the Fatehpuri mosque, said. “ Almost 50 per cent of those who greeted us today were Hindus or Christians.” In Mumbai, despite a terror threat, millions marked Eid, Ganeshotsav and the Jain festival, Samvasari.
