Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi,tennis worlds Indo-Pak Express,stormed into the US Open mens doubles final early on Thursday,downing Argentinas Eduardo Schwank and Horacio Zaballos 7-6 (7-5 ),6-4 in the semifinals,before scores of Indians and Pakistanis who cheered in one voice.Indo-Pak has never sounded sweeter.
The 16th-seed combination,who played their maiden Grand Slam semifinal before an audience that included the United Nations ambassadors of India and Pakistan,Hardeep Puri and Abdullah H Haroon,will take on the top-seeded American pair of Bob and Mike Bryan in the title round late on Friday.
We knew,to do well in the big events was the only way to pass on that message (of peace)... Hopefully with that,and,you know,both our countries agreeing we can have that match up on that border, Bopanna told reporters after the match.
I see Qureshi from Lahore and Bopanna from Bangalore combining like brothers, sports minister M S Gill told TOI.I have one question for everyone.If Bopanna and Qureshi can play together,why cannot India and Pakistan.
Meanwhile,the deadly duo claimed that they are up to the challenge of taking on the best team in the business.Bopanna said: To win a Grand Slam you have to beat the best there is.We have to go there and play our games,we beat them (Bryan twins) a few weeks ago.We are looking forward to the final.
The pair,that has come through some tight matches,the quarters and semifinal of the US Open included,said trust was a big part of their partnership.

Pastor calls off burning of Holy Qur’an

GAINESVILLE, Florida: A Florida pastor called off Thursday a Qur’an-burning ceremony scheduled for this weekend, claiming he had secured a deal to move a planned mosque in New York away from Ground Zero.
“I will be flying up there on Saturday to meet with the imam at the Ground Zero mosque. He has agreed to move the location,” Terry Jones told journalists outside his small evangelical church in Gainesville, Florida.
“We felt that would be a sign that God would want us to do it. The American people do not want the mosque there, and, of course, Muslims do not want us to burn the copies of Qur’an.”
“We are, of course, now against any other group burning copies of the Qur’an,” Jones said during a news conference. We would right now ask no one to burn copies of the Qur’an. We are absolutely strong on that. It is not the time to do it.”
However, organizers behind plans for the Islamic cultural center and a mosque near the World Trade Center site denied the pastor’s claim that they had decided to move the project elsewhere.
“We don’t know anything about it,” Daisy Khan, one of the main promoters of the proposed cultural center and mosque and also the wife of imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, man behind the project, told reporters.
Jones said Imam Muhammad Musri of the Islamic Society of Central Florida told him that officials would guarantee that the mosque would be moved. “I asked him three times, and I have witnesses,” Jones said.”
Musri thanked Jones and his church members “for making the decision today to defuse the situation and bring to a positive end what has become the world over a spectacle that no one would benefit from except extremists and terrorists” who would use it to recruit future radicals.
Earlier, the pastor had his website pulled from the Internet, the hosting company said on Thursday.
Dan Goodgame, a spokesman for popular Web host Rackspace Hosting, said two websites operated by the Dove World Outreach Center, the tiny Gainesville, Florida church run by pastor Terry Jones, were shut down late on Wednesday.
Earlier, Jones had implied the only way he would back down if he received a phone call directly from the White House asking him not to proceed with his plan. The international police agency Interpol had warned governments worldwide on Thursday of an increased risk of terror attacks if the plan went ahead.
“If the proposed Qur’an burning by a pastor in the US goes ahead as planned, there is a strong likelihood that violent attacks on innocent people would follow,” Interpol said in a statement, adding that it was acting partly on a request from Pakistan.
US President Barack Obama had exhorted Jones to “listen to those better angels” and call off his plan.
Obama had told ABC’s “Good Morning America” in an interview aired on Thursday that he hoped pastor Jones would listen to the pleas of people who had asked him to call off the plan. The president called it a ‘stunt.’ “If he’s listening, I hope he understands that what he’s proposing to do is completely contrary to our values as Americans,” Obama said. “That this country has been built on the notion of freedom and religious tolerance.”
Said Obama: “Look, this is a recruitment bonanza for Al-Qaeda. You could have serious violence in places like Pakistan and Afghanistan.”
The president had also said Jones’ plan, if carried out, could serve as an incentive for terrorist-minded individuals “to blow themselves up” to kill others.
Pakistan’s president had condemned as “despicable” the plan, saying it would inflame Muslim sentiment across the world, a statement from his office said Thursday.
President Asif Ali Zardari said: “Anyone who even thought of such a despicable act must be suffering from a diseased mind and a sickly soul,” according to the statement.
“It will inflame sentiments among Muslims throughout the world and cause irreparable damage to interfaith harmony and also to world peace,” the statement quoted Zardari as saying.
The Organization of the Islamic Conference had on Thursday said the plan would constitute “an outrageous path of hatred.” Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, secretary-general of the 58-member OIC, expressed “grave concern” over the plan, according to an OIC statement.
Saleh S. Al-Wohaibi, the head of the World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY), had expressed fears the plan had the potential of sparking violence in different parts of the world. The WAMY chief said that the burning of the Holy Book could spark anti-American violence, including against US soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Al-Wohaibi called the move a “highly provocative and idiotic act,” but he urged Muslim youths to respond to in a “sensible manner.”
Brig. Gen. Hans-Werner Fritz, the commander of German troops in Afghanistan, had said the burning would “provide a trigger ... for violence toward all ISAF troops, including the Germans in northern Afghanistan.”
Canada’s government had also expressed similar concerns, saying the torching plan “flames intolerance” including toward its own Afghanistan contingent. Indonesia’s President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had warned of the impact between the Muslim world and the West in a letter to Obama.
Malaysia had called the ceremony a “heinous” act that represented an attack on Muslims, and called on the US to stop it from going ahead.
India, which has the world’s third largest Muslim population, had called on the US authorities to take “strong action” and for Indian media to impose a blackout on images of the event.
France’s Foreign Ministry had blasted what it called an “incitement to hatred” of Muslims, and “an insult to the memory of the victims of Sept. 11.”
British Prime Minister David Cameron’s spokesman had said he “strongly opposed” any attempt to offend members of a religious group while former Premier Tony Blair described the planned torching as “disrespectful”.
The State Department had ordered US embassies around the world to assess their security ahead of the ceremony amid fears it could spark anti-American violence. It issued a travel alert to caution US citizens of the potential for anti-US demonstrations in many countries.

Chidambaram condemns plan to burn Quran

NEW DELHI: The government on Thursday strongly condemned the threat by a US pastor to burn copies of Quran to mark the anniversary of 9/11. Expressing hope that the US authorities will take strong action to prevent "such an outrage" from being committed, home minister P Chidambaram said the threat was meant to increase bitterness between religious groups.
"We condemn the action of the pastor. It is totally unbecoming of anyone who claims to be a man of religion. It is obviously calculated to increase bitterness and strife between different religious groups. No one who is interested in maintaining harmony and peace among different sections of the people can condone such action," said Chidambaram.
Chidambaram also asked the media to exercise restraint over the issue to help maintain peace and harmony. "While we await the action of the US authorities, we would appeal to the media in India — both print and visual media — to refrain from telecasting visuals or publishing photographs of the deplorable act," Chidambaram said in a statement.

India to release 7 Pak fishermen, 24 civilian prisoners

NEW DELHI: India on Thursday announced repatriation of seven Pakistani fishermen and 24 other civilian prisoners next week following Pakistan's decision to release 442 fishermen.
The foreign ministry said that India, in cooperation with Pakistan, was contemplating further steps to release and repatriate other eligible Pakistani prisoners lodged in Indian jails.
In a letter to his Pakistani counterpart, foreign minister S M Krishna conveyed "deep appreciation'' of the people on the release of 442 Indian fishermen who had been lodged in various jails in Pakistan. While thanking Pakistan, Krishna said that he looked forward to early release and repatriation of all Indian and Pakistani prisoners to their respective countries.
Krishna also conveyed his greetings to his counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr and reiterated India's commitment to work with Pakistan for the common good of the peoples of the two countries.

Vellore: This Eid-ul-Fitr will be special for Mohammed Ghouse Basha and his wife Dilshad.Having lost all hope of ever seeing their nine-yearold son,Fazlu,who went missing five months ago,the couple living in a Bangalore suburb had a happy reunion on the eve of Eid.Fazlu had boarded a train by mistake from a station near his home in Varthur and landed in Vellore.
Fazlu,a Class IV student,found himself lost at Vellore railway station until Railway Protection Force personnel rescued him and handed him over to a government reception home.The little boy,who doesnt have enough language skills,could not give clear details about his parents and his native place.He told the RPF that he was playing with his friends in a stationary compartment near his home and it left station before he could get off.
Basha and Dilshad learnt about Fazlus whereabouts after TOI carried a report on him on September 8.They contacted Ruby Nakka,a member of the child welfare committee,to confirm his presence in Vellore.

Gunmen behead, set alight Sunni cleric in Iraq

BAGHDAD - Gunmen stormed the house of a Sunni cleric on Thursday and cut his head off before setting him alight in an attack that bore the hallmark of insurgents, a police spokesman said.
Jabbar Saleh al-Jibouri was killed shortly before dawn at his house in a village near Muqdadiya town, 80 km (50 miles) northeast of the capital in Diyala province, Major Ghalib al-Jubouri, a police spokesman in Diyala, said. The attack came a day before the start of the Islamic holiday of Eid.
“The gunmen entered the house, stabbed him, cut his head off and set him alight,” Jubouri told Reuters.
“Most probably the attack was based on terrorist motives because it happened in such a horrible way.”

Iran to free one of three US hikers

TEHRAN: Iran will soon free Sarah Shourd, one of three US hikers the Islamic republic detained more than a year ago, an Iranian diplomat announced on Thursday.
“I would like to confirm that Iran will be releasing Sarah Shourd very soon,” Bak Sahraei, the second counsellor to the Iranian mission at the United Nations, said in a statement sent to AFP.
Previously, Iran's Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance said “one of the Americans” would be freed at 9:00 am (0430 GMT) on Saturday at Hotel Esteghlal in Tehran, without identifying the detainee.
A ministry official said the release ceremony would be overseen by one of the vice presidents of Iran, but the statements did not elaborate about the reasons for the decision.
Shourd, 31, was arrested along with fellow US hikers Shane Bauer, 27, and Josh Fattal, 27 on July 31, 2009 after straying across the border from neighbouring Iraq.
Her mother Nora told AFP last month that Sarah was being held in solitary confinement despite suffering from a pre-cancerous cervical condition, a lump in her breast and depression.

Blast in Balochistan finance minister’s house kills five

Islamabad — At least five people were killed when a bomb exploded inside the residence of Balochistan’s finance minister Asim Ali Kurd on Thursday.
The minister remained safe as he was not present at his house when the blast occurred. Those killed were the servants of the minister. Two people were killed on the spot while two others died later in the hospital.
“It was a remote-controlled blast and the device was planted in a car parked inside the minister’s house at Quetta’s Railway colony,” Quetta police chief Abid Hussain Nautkani said.
The blast partially damaged the house and destroyed two vehicles parked inside the house. Police parties arrived at the scene and cordoned off the area.

Pasban activist among 10 killed in Karachi

KARACHI: A Pasban activist was shot dead in Bihar Colony on Thursday, the Chakiwara police said.
The victim, Naeem Shah, 34, was working at his tailor shop in the wee hours on Thursday when two men arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire on him, injuring him seriously.
Shah breathed his last before reaching the hospital, while the culprits managed to escape from the scene.
A young man, Talha, 21, committed suicide by shooting himself in the head at his Ittehad Town house on Thursday, the Mochko police said.
Talha’s family took him to the Civil Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead, they added.
In another incident, two people died of suffocation in Liaquatabad, the Super Market police said.

Car bomb, gunmen attack Mogadishu airport, 7 dead

MOGADISHU, Somalia: A suicide car bomber and gunmen attacked the front gate to Mogadishu's seaside airport on Thursday, triggering an explosion and gunbattle, officials said. At least seven people were killed, including six security forces.
The coordinated attack was the latest in a surge of assaults by Islamist insurgents, who last month declared a new, stepped-up effort to oust the country's weak government. The barrage took place about 40 minutes after Somalia's president flew out of the country.
After the car bomb exploded, a second vehicle full of militants opened fire at African Union and Somali security forces, said Osman Dahir, a police officer at the airport.
He said there were several dead bodies of insurgents lying in front of the airport, but he didn't know how many.
Two soldiers with the African Union force and four Somali police officers were killed, said Maj. Barigye Bahoku, the spokesman for the AU force. One Somali civilian was also killed, he said.

Washington: An American scholar who has caused a kerfuffle in the strategic community by reporting the presence of Chinese troops in the disputed northern areas of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir is insisting that Islamabad has ceded control of the area to Beijing despite denials from both sides.
Selig Harrison,director of the Asia Program at the Center for International Policy,followed up a rebuttal of his article about Beijings control of Pakistan-held territories by conceding that China had not deployed combat soldiers,but there has been an influx of construction,engineering and communication units of the Peoples Liberation Army into Gilgit-Baltistan,under the command of the Xinjiang military district,totaling at least 7,000 military personnel. In addition,several thousand PLA troops are said to be stationed in the Khunjerab Pass on the Xinjiang border to protect Karakoram Highway construction crews,with ready access to Gilgit-Baltistan, Harrison wrote,adding,the impact of such a large foreign presence in a thinly populated,undeveloped region has been profoundTo local political activists,this adds up to a creeping process of de facto Chinese control over a region where Islamabad claims nominal authority but lacks the infrastructure to exercise it.

At least 12 killed in Kurram tribal clash

PARACHINAR: At least 12 people were killed in a clash between two tribes in a row over the distribution of irrigation water in Pakistan’s Kurram tribal region, reports quoted officials and residents as saying.
The clash occurred between the Shalozan and Shalozan Tangi tribes in upper Kurram.
Heavy arms were used in fighting and several people were also injured in the clash.

US soldiers killed,collected fingers

London: Twelve American soldiers are facing charges over a secret kill team that allegedly blew up and shot Afghan civilians at random and collected their fingers as trophies.
According to the Guardian,five of the soldiers are charged with murdering three Afghan men who were allegedly killed for sport in separate attacks this year.Seven others are accused of covering up the killings and assaulting a recruit who exposed the murders when he reported other abuses,including members of the unit smoking hashish stolen from civilians.
The killings were allegedly carried out by members of a Stryker infantry brigade based in Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan.According to investigators and legal documents,discussion of killing Afghan civilians began after the arrival of staff sergeant Calvin Gibbs at forward operating base Ramrod last November.

WHEN M. F. Husain left India about three years ago, after being chastised by the right wing fundamentalist groups over his objectionable paintings of Hindu gods and goddesses, none would have thought that he would never come back to India. But with the passing of years, the thought has become an unofficial reality, sealed not too long ago in February this year, by his announcement that he had been ‘ honoured’ with Qatari nationality.
India’s most well- known artist turns 95 on September 17. His admirers and art connoisseurs the world over have big plans for the day — the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha is honouring him while the New York- auction house, Sotheby’s, has brought out a special set of his paintings for its upcoming auction on September 16. It features a painting that he made at the residence of Italian filmmaker Roberto Rossellini in 1958. In India too, despite a possibility of disruption as has happened in the past, SAHMAT, the cultural NGO has put together an interesting fare of day- long events at the Jamia Millia Islamia’s gallery named after the master.

Suicide attack in Russia kills 17, wounds over 130

RUSSIA: A suicide car bomber hit a central market in southern Russia on Thursday, killing at least 17 people and wounding more than 130 in one of the North Caucasus region's worst attacks in years, officials said.
The bomber detonated his explosives as he drove by the main entrance to the Vladikavkaz market, the emergency situations ministry said.
The death toll included the bomber, and 98 of the 133 people wounded in the explosion were hospitalized, many in grave condition, said Alexander Pogorely of the emergency situations ministry.
TV images showed a shrapnel-littered square in front of the market, with blood stains on the pavement and rows of vehicles scarred by the blast.

Quran burning an ‘abhorrent act': UN

Describing the act as ‘abhorrent’, the United Nations has urged the organisers of the Quran burning not to proceed with their plan, which could derail the efforts of peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan. “If such an abhorrent act were to be implemented, it would only contribute to fuelling the arguments of those who are indeed against peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan,” said Staffan de Mistura, UN Secy-Gen's Special representative. Meanwhile, UN Secy Gen Ban Ki-moon has also urged against the proposed Quran burning. “Any such action would contradict the efforts of the UN...And lead to further discord,” Ban's spokesperson Farhan Haq said.

Quran Burning Stirs Outrage In Muslim World

Sept. 9: Hundreds of angry Afghans burned an American flag and chanted “Death to the Christians” on Thursday to protest plans by a small American church to torch copies of the Muslim holy book on the anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks. Local officials in Mahmud Raqi, the capital of the Kapisa province some 100 kilometres northeast of Kabul, estimated that up to 4,000 people took part in the protest. But Nato spokesman James Judge said the protest numbered between 500 to 700 people.
“The Afghan national police prevented the protest from overwhelming an Afghan military outpost,” and dispersed the demonstration, he told the Associated Press. Judge added that the Quran burning is “precisely the kind of activity the Taliban uses to fuel their propaganda efforts to reduce support” for coalition forces.

Quran row: Nepal Muslims warn of World War III

Kathmandu: Muslims in Nepal on Friday joined the raging worldwide debate over an American pastor's plan to burn copies of the Quran to mark 9/11 terror attack anniversary, and warned the action could pit Muslims against Christians and trigger a "third world war over religion".
"We condemn the announcement of Florida pastor Terry Jones that he would burn copies of the Quran on September 11, the ninth anniversary of the terror attacks in the US," Muslim Sangh Nepal, affiliated to the country's second largest political party, the Nepali Congress, said in a press statement.
"It was established that the September 11 attacks were perpetrated by terrorists who have no religion or community. Torching the Quran would be an attempt to provoke the Muslim community and we condemn it as a shameful act."

Merkel defends Danish cartoonist, condemns US pastor

BERLIN: German Chancellor Angela Merkel has caused a stir by defending Danish cartoonist Kurt Westergaard, who provoked outrage in the Muslim world in 2005 by drawing controversial cartoons of Propet Muhammad.
As a cartoonist, he has the freedom to draw such cartoons, Merkel said in her key-note address at the awarding of this year's Media Prize of the association of journalists "M100" in Potsdam to Westergaard.
However, she condemned the plans of a radical Christian community in the US to burn copies the Quran on the ninth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York.
"That is totally disrespectful, abhorrent and wrong," she said.
The chancellor said drawing such cartoons is possible in Europe "regardless of whether we find them in good taste or whether we find them necessary and helpful or not".

A White House call may stop plans to burn the Quran
THE Florida pastor at the centre of the global storm over plans to burn hundreds of Qurans on Thursday said he may call off the event if asked to by the Obama administration.
Terry Jones, head of the Dove World Outreach Center, told USA Today he had not been contacted by the White House, Pentagon or the US state department.
“ I don’t think a call from them is something we would ignore,” Jones told the daily.
In the meantime, Interpol warned that burning copies of the Quran will probably trigger terrorist attacks around the world. Interpol secretary- general Ronald Noble said he had warned member states that “ if the proposed Quran burning ... goes ahead as planned, there is a strong likelihood that violent attacks on innocent people would follow”. Although there are currently no specific details as to what forms of terror attacks would follow, what is clear is — if the Quran burning goes ahead as planned — there will be tragic consequences, he said.

WAMY chief fears violence following burning of Quran copies

RIYADH: Saleh S. Al-Wohaibi, the head of the World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY), has expressed fears the burning of copies of the Qura'n by a small church in Florida on Saturday, the anniversary of the September 2001 attacks, has the potential of sparking violence in different parts of the world.
The WAMY chief said that the burning of the Holy Book could spark anti-American violence, including against US soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq.
"This is also a concern shared by the US commander in Afghanistan," said the WAMY chief, referring to Gen. David Petraeus' recent comments about the controversy.
Al-Wohaibi called the move by 58-year-old evangelical minister Terry Jones of the Dove World Outreach Center a "highly provocative and idiotic act," but he urged Muslim youths to respond to in a "sensible manner."
Makkah-based Muslim World League (MWL) Secretary-General Abdullah Al-Turki also spoke out against the planned book burning, calling it "an act of heinous aggression on Islam and its religious book."

Moving New York mosque could spur radicals: Imam

Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the man behind the controversial mosque near Ground Zero in New York, says that moving the proposed shrine to a different location could embolden radicals and create security risks for the US and Americans abroad.
Breaking his silence on the raging controversy, the imam told CNN that he would not have proposed locating the $100 million mosque and Islamic cultural centre two blocks away from Ground Zero if he had known that the plan would trigger such a commotion.
However, relocating it at this point is fraught with danger, he said in reply to repeated questions on why it should be built so close to Ground Zero, the site where Islamic extremists brought down the twin towers of the World Trade Centre, killing nearly 3,000 people.

Mamata ‘makeover’ irks Bengal Muslims

IFTAR parties and poll bonanzas are passé. Politicians keen to woo minorities would do well to learn a lesson or two from Mamata Banerjee.
The Union railway minister has posed as a Muslim woman in advertisements released by her ministry in some Bangla newspapers on Thursday.
Mamata, whose Trinamool Congress is a former ally of the BJP, got the railway ministry to release two advertisements announcing Eid bonanza for Muslims — read voters — in Kolkata.
While one ad is about the doubling of a local railway line between the Tala and Princep Ghat stations, the other goes to town about the foundation stone laying ceremony of a nursing college in Kolkata’s Gardenreach, a Muslim- dominated area.
Both ads show Mamata posing as a Muslim woman — with her head covered and hands raised in prayer. One advertisement even has the religious motifs of the Kaba, the moon and the star.

BJP to take backseat, VHP may lead Babri verdict movements

The RSS is not very keen on allowing the BJP take the driver’s seat in any movement in the aftermath of the September 24 judgment on Ayodhya title suit and has conveyed to the party that the VHP or others should be allowed to steer the andolan.
As thousands of sants (saints) gather in New Delhi on September 24 and 25 to discuss the future course of action, the RSS wants the BJP to provide the “crucial backup support” to VHP and allow the RSS affiliate to lead the movement that could be necessitated. The meeting is been organised under the aegis of Ram Janamabhoomi Mandir Nirman Sant Ucchadhikar Samiti.
“For obvious reasons, the RSS is not in favour of politicisation of this issue, once more. This is how we handled the Ramsethu agitation where the BJP provided the backup support while the VHP and other affiliates were at the forefront,” sources told The Pioneer.

Abducted Pak-origin British journalist freed

A British journalist of Pakistani origin, who was abducted along with two former ISI officials by militants in Pakistan’s restive tribal belt, has been released, officials said on Thursday.
Journalist Asad Qureshi, his driver and former ISI officials Khalid Khwaja and Colonel Imam alias Sultan Amir Tarar were abducted in late March while travelling to North Waziristan to make a film on militancy for Britain's Channel 4.
Khwaja was killed by his abductors in April. His body was found in the tribal belt with a note accusing him of being a spy for the US.
Officials of the British High Commission and the local administration in the tribal belt confirmed that Qureshi had been released. Officials in the northwest also said Qureshi”s driver was released with him.

JEDDAH: Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah and Crown Prince Sultan, deputy premier and minister of defense and aviation, on Thursday urged Muslims all over the world to stand united on the basis of the Qur’an and Sunnah.
In a joint Eid Al-Fitr message to the nation that was read on Saudi radio and television by Culture and Information Minister Abdul Aziz Khoja, King Abdullah and Prince Sultan also called upon rich Muslims to support and sympathize with their less fortunate brethren.
“We are now bidding farewell to the blessed month of Ramadan after the Almighty honored us to fast and pray during the month. We hope we were successful in making use of the blessed days and nights to establish closer relations with God,” the message said.
Abdullah and Sultan emphasized the importance of the fasting month of Ramadan. “This annual occasion offers Muslims a great opportunity for retrospection and self evaluation and strengthening their mental capabilities to engage in righteous activities.”

Recreation programs for women planned

JEDDAH: A number of recreational programs for women will be organized in Riyadh, including five dramas, to mark Eid Al-Fitr. Some of these Eid programs will be held at Princess Nourah bint Abdul Rahman University.
The dramas organized by the Riyadh municipality will focus on the situation of Saudi women and their contributions to social service, the municipality said.
A drama titled “Banat Fatima” (Daughters of Fatima) will be staged at King Fahd Cultural Center while another drama named “Bidaa Ala Al-Raseef” (Goods on the Sidewalk) at Dar Al-Uloom Girls School.

PA turns down request to recognize Israel as a Jewish state

RAMALLAH: A senior Palestinian official on Thursday said the Palestinian Authority (PA) will not recognize Israel as a Jewish state, even though the PA acknowledges there is a Jewish majority in Israel.
Nabil Shaath, a member of Palestinian negotiations team, told the Voice of Palestine radio that the Palestinian negotiating team turned down Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's request to discuss the recognition of Israel as a Jewish state during the upcoming round of peace talks in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh next week.
Shaath said the Palestinian leadership "won't expose our people to security and political threats."
He said the recognition of Israel as a Jewish state would harm Arab Palestinians inside Israel and negate the right of return of Palestinian refugees.

4 Iraqis escape from US custody in Baghdad prison

BAGHDAD - Four prisoners with links to al-Qaida have escaped from the U.S.-controlled part of a maximum-security prison in Baghdad, U.S. and Iraqi officials said Thursday.
The breakout from Karkh Prison, formerly called Camp Cropper, is an embarrassment for the U.S. military, which has handed over control of all of the detention facilities it used to run to the Iraqi government. But at the request of the Iraqis, the U.S. has retained custody over some of the most dangerous prisoners, including those with ties to terrorist groups or Saddam Hussein’s former regime.
An Iraqi military spokesman, Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi, told The Associated Press that the Americans informed them Thursday morning that four Iraqis being held by the U.S. had broken out of the prison, although it was not clear exactly when or how they escaped.
He said the men were linked to al-Qaida and facing the death penalty.
An American military spokesman, Col. Barry Johnson, confirmed there was an escape, but provided no details.

It pains me to add the word ‘late’ to Dr Wazir Agha’s name, whom I found to be a great intellectual, a good friend and an excellent human being. Dr Agha’s journey in literature is aptly summed up by his couplet: kehney ko chandgaam tha yeh arsa-e-hyayat, lekin tamaam umr hi chalna para mujhey.
Dr Wazir Agha saw his destination only a few steps away, but he had to walk (struggle) all his life to accomplish what he desired to achieve. Perhaps that is true for all of us. He started his journey in this world on May 18, 1922 in a village in Sargodha district. In his autobiography ‘Shaam Ki Mundair Sey’, Dr Wazir relates how his father obtained a janam patri from a pandit at his birth. However, he did not open it all his life.

Recently a church named Dove Church, reportedly having less than a hundred members, announced that they want to burn the Quran. I live in fear of how my countrymen will react. Will they morph into the lynching crowd of Sialkot? Will they burn fastfood restaurants as they did when protesting against caricatures killing two of their own country men or will they set cars and buses on fire? Will they become the monsters the Dove Church envisages Muslims to be?
I want you to remember that this action is being done by a fringe group. Remember that this is not a global conspiracy against Islam; these are just few hate mongers trying to get attention. If you want to show your anger, do it by sending letters. Write letters to the American Embassy, to White House and if you want to Dove Church, telling them to read Book not burn it. Educate people about Islam.

12 killed as vehicle hits IED

PARACHINAR, Sept 9: Twelve people, three children and two women among them, were killed and two others injured in a roadside bomb explosion in Kurram Agency on Thursday.
They were going to Hangu from Dool Ragha area in central Kurram when their vehicle hit an improvised explosive device (IED) near Palaseen village.
Six people were killed on the spot and six others in hospital.

Taliban kill 3 of kidnapped labourers

UPPER DIR, Sept 9: Three of the 10 labourers, kidnapped by Taliban from Chitral district few weeks ago, have been killed, sources say.
The labourers, belonging to Doog Darra area of Upper Dir, were working at a forest in Cholgah area of Chitral when Taliban kidnapped them.
Sources said that they had been shifted to Nuristan province of Afghanistan. They added that a jirga of local elders visited Noristan to negotiate the release of 10 kidnapped persons but Taliban refused to set them free. Instead they said that all residents of Doog Darra were their enemies.
A spokesman for Pakistan Tehrik-i-Taliban also told journalists that they had killed three of the kidnapped labourers. The killed hostages were identified as Mohammad Rasul, Misal Khan and Khoedad.

4 ANP men shot dead

KALAYA, Sept 9: Four workers of the Awami National Party (ANP) were shot dead in Doaba town of Hangu district late on Wednesday night.
ANP’s local leader Haji Gul Saeed was sitting outside a hujra along with party men Qadeem Gul, Mastan Shah and Noor Gul after Isha prayer when gunmen sprayed them with bullets.
Family sources said the deceased had no enmity. Police registered a case against unidentified assailants.

Iran warns US on Quran blasphemy

TEHRAN—Grand Ayatollah Lotfollah Safi Golpayegani has warned the United States that there will be major repercussions if the plan to burn the Quran on the 9/11 anniversary is carried out.
However, the Gainesville, Florida-based Dove World Outreach Center church, which calls itself a New Testament, charismatic, non-denominational church, says it will go ahead with its plan to set the Quran on fire on Saturday to mark the ninth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks against the United States.
Ayatollah Golpayegani issued a statement on Wednesday, saying he, along with 1.5 billion Muslims, as well as other truly civilized people in the world, denounce the barbarous plan. He stated that such a plan will endanger all of humanity and will give rise to major disturbances.

Three Afghan insurgents killed in Nato airstrike

KABUL: An Afghan insurgent commander planning bombings in Kabul and two of his associates have been killed in an airstrike, Nato said.
Intelligence sources tracked Nur Mohammed and two armed militants to a field in the remote Musahi district of Kabul province, the military alliance said.
A Nato statement said Friday coalition aircraft conducted the airstrike Thursday night after ensuring no civilians were present.
It said the senior insurgent commander was planning attacks in the capital before the September 18 parliamentary elections. The Taliban have vowed to attack polling stations and warned Afghans not to participate in what they called a sham vote.

Abu Salem can be tried for offences entailing death penalty

NEW DELHI: In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court on Friday said underworld don Abu Salem can be tried for offences inviting death penalty even though the Portugal government had laid a pre-condition that he will not be extradited if he was to be awarded capital punishment.
A bench of Justices P Sathasivam and Asok Kumar Ganguly held that Salem can be tried for murder (Section 302) and criminal conspiracy (120-B) of the IPC, besides other offences under the TADA in connection with the 1993 Mumbai blasts.
The apex court rejected the argument of Salem that he cannot be tried for the offences which entailed death penalty as the same was the pre-condition agreed by the Indian government at the time of his extradition from Portugal.
The prosecution had, however, argued that the Portugal government cannot impose any pre-condition on Indian courts.

KERALA COLLEGE REJECTS INJURED LECTURER’S PLEA TO REVOKE HIS DISMISSAL

Despite widespread criticism against its action, the management of the church-run Newman college rejected the plea of lecturer TJ Joseph to revoke his dismissal for setting a question paper which hurt the sentiments of Muslims and for which his hand was hacked off by activists of a radical outfit.
In his reply to Joseph’s personal appeal, College Manager Fr Thomas Malekkudy made it clear on Thursday that the explanations of Joseph were not (RPT) not convincing at all and any relaxation of the disciplinary action would be based only on the decision of the court, church sources said.
The Management held that Joseph, in his reply to of the letters sent by the college since the controversy broke out, had ever admitted that he committed a serious mistake through preparing the controversial question.
