Deadly Day for NATO in Afghanistan: 9 Occupation Soldiers Killed

NATO occupation troops in Afghanistan have witnessed on Tuesday one of the deadliest incidents since the US-led invasion, with nine soldiers killed when their helicopter had crashed in the south of the country.
The overall death toll of occupation forces has exceeded last year's record. The incident brings to 529 the number of troops killed so far this year, according to an AFP tally based on the count kept by icasualties.org, surpassing the previous record of 521 deaths in 2009.
"The cause of the crash is under investigation," the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said. "There are no reports of enemy fire in the area."
ISAF added that another NATO soldier was injured, along with an Afghan soldier and a US civilian, but it did not identify the nationalities of the dead troops and did not give further details on where the crash took place.
After only nine months, 2010 has now become the deadliest year of the long war.
June was the deadliest month of the war for coalition troops, with 103 fatalities, according to an AFP count based on the independent icasualties.org figures.
A total of 2,097 occupation troops have now been killed since the invasion of 2001.

Islamic scholars say Indian Mujahideen (IM) email wrongly represents Quranic verses

MUMBAI: In the email that claimed responsibility for Sunday's terror attack in Delhi, the Indian Mujahideen (IM) has quoted six verses from the Quran. The verses, said Islamic scholars, have been taken out of context and misinterpreted.
The verses were revealed at different points in Islam's 1,400-year evolution, say the maulanas, and the circumstances in which they were revealed are key to understanding them.
In the five-page attachment of the email, which the IM had sent to the media, the IM threatened to terrorise the country again. The Quran was cited on pages 1, 2, 4 and 5.
The first quotation reads: ''And what is wrong with you that you fight not in the cause of Allah, and for those weak, ill-treated and oppressed among men, women and children, whose cry is: 'Our Lord! rescue us from this town whose people are oppressors; and raise for us from you one who will protect, and raise for us from you one who will help.' Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah, and those who disbelieve, fight in the cause of Taghut (satan). So fight you against the friends of Shaitan; ever feeble indeed is the plot of Shaitan.'' (Quran 4:75).

Six killed in N. Waziristan drone attacks

MIRAMSHAH: Six people were killed when suspected US drones carried out missile attacks in Shewa area of North Waziristan on Monday afternoon.
Local people said that three suspected militants going on a motorbike were killed when a US drone attacked them in Darezanda village, about 35km from here.
They said that three more people were killed when another drone attacked those who had gathered there to remove the bodies. The motorcycle was destroyed.

Karachi violence takes ominous turn

KARACHI: At least nine people were killed in incidents of violence in Karachi on Monday.
Commercial centres remained closed and traffic thinned out as tension and fear gripped some areas during funeral of five people who were shot dead on Sunday night.
Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader Dr Farooq Sattar held the federal interior ministry and the Sindh home department responsible for the renewed wave of violence in the city. “If they are not responsible, then they should tell us as to why they failed to curb the acts of terror in the city,” he said at a press conference here on Monday.
He said that conspirators wanted to malign the MQM in the eyes of the international community by linking the fresh incident of targeted killings with the assassination of Dr Imran Farooq.
At least three people were killed and six others injured on Monday during violence in Nazimabad area after a young man was killed allegedly in firing by the Rangers. He was returning home with dozens of other people after attending the funeral of a victim of target killing, officials and witnesses said.
Rizvia Society and the main Nazimabad Chowrangi turned into a battleground after an exchange of fire between the Rangers and armed men kept traffic off the roads for two hours. The residents were confined to their homes.
The incident triggered acts of arson in other parts of the city. A number of vehicles and roadside stalls were set on fire.
The Rangers and police authorities claimed that their personnel had to fire in self-defence after some armed men attacked a picket near Liaquatabad Dakkhana. “Some youngsters who were returning to the area after attending a funeral fired at a Rangers picket in Dakkhana. Our personnel only retaliated in defence,” said a spokesman for the Sindh Rangers.
Police said the exchange of fire killed two youngsters, identified as Nasir Ali and Akbar. The bodies were shifted to Abbassi Shaheed Hospital and a private health facility.
Police said the situation turned ugly when Rangers personnel chased the armed men and engaged them for an hour.
In the second incident, a young man, identified as Shahzeb Abbass, was killed in Rizvia Society. His body was shifted to the Abbassi Shaheed Hospital, which also received eight of the injured.
“The Rangers’ reaction was quite natural. They returned fire only after they came under attack. It’s absolutely a wrong impression that they fired at innocent people,” DIG West Sultan Khawja said. “The clash between the armed men and law-enforcement personnel near Rizvia Society left one assistant sub-inspector wounded.”
He said that three or four suspects had been detained and they were being interrogated. “Our force is trying to defuse the temperature and avert further losses.”
Two buses, two cars, a rickshaw and eight roadside stalls were set on fire on the road between Rizvia Society and Gulbahar. A bus was also set ablaze on Abul Hasan Isphahani Road. Five fire-fighters were injured when they came under attack near Rizvia Society.
Leaders of the Jafria Alliance Pakistan and Majlis-i-Wahdat-i-Muslimeen blamed law-enforcement personnel for the violence. “The mourners were returning after attending the burial of Tanveer Abbass. They were unduly attacked by the Rangers near Dakkhana,” said Allama Abbass Kumaili of the Jafria Alliance Pakistan.
He accused the paramilitary forces of fuelling the violence and called for an inquiry into the incident.
Police said that six people, an MQM worker among them, had been killed in separate incidents of firing in the city on Monday.
They said that 29-year-old Ziaul Islam, an activist of the MQM’s Bengali Action Committee, was found shot dead in a coastal locality of Korangi on Monday. The victim’s hands and legs were found tied up with rope.
In Sohrab Goth, a young man was chased and killed by armed men on motorcycles near his residence, police said. They said 35-year-old Riaz Magsi was returning home from Al Karam Square after meeting a friend in Saifullah Goth, near Khamiso Goth.
The victim, police said, hailed from Balochistan and ran a small business in Karachi. He was not associated with any political or religious party and the killing appeared to have been motivated by personal enmity.
In a Malir, Mohammad Aslam was killed outside Baba Gharib Ali Shah shrine.
The owner of a tyre puncture shop was gunned down in North Nazimabad.
“Imran, 27, was targeted inside his shop near Farooq-i-Azam Masjid,” according to the Shahrah-i-Noor Jehan police station. The victim lived in a rented residence in Nusrat Bhutto Colony.
In Bin Qasim Town, police found the slaughtered body of a young man who, they believed, was killed at least three days ago. “The victim appeared to be in his early 30s. The body, shifted to Edhi morgue in Sohrab Goth, remained unidentified,” Sukkun police said.
The driver of a passenger coach was gunned down in Landhi late on Monday night. The area police said that armed men riding on a motorcycle tried to stop the Ilyas Coach near Majeed Colony, but the driver, sensing danger, pressed the accelerator. “When they failed to stop the coach, one of the men fired multiple shots. Two bullets hit the driver who died on the spot,” Sub-Inspector Muhammad Khan said.
The deceased was identified as 37-year-old Rana Gul, a resident of Ittehad Town. The body was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.

Jama Masjid attack: Threat email traced to Mumbai

NEW DELHI: The email purportedly sent by outlawed Indian Mujahideen owning up the attacks outside Jama Masjid and threatening more strikes ahead of Commonwealth Games has been traced to Mumbai, police said on Monday.
"The email was sent from Mumbai. The server has been tracked to Mumbai," a senior police official said.
The Indian Mujahideen has in an email sent to various media houses threatened to unleash violence during the Commonwealth Games soon after Sunday's firing incident at the Jama Masjid in which two Taiwanese nationals were injured.
An email sent to BBC does not directly refer to the incident of firing but says, "in the name of Allah, the attack is a tribute to Atif Amin and Mohammed Sajid."
Both of them were killed by the police in the Batla House encounter on September 19, 2008.

Questions remain on IM owning the attack

MYSTERY surrounds Sunday’s firing outside Jama Masjid in which two Taiwanese nationals were wounded.
An email from Indian Mujahideen ( IM) had purportedly staked claim to the shooting and the car blast as revenge for the ‘ martyrdom’ of Mohammed Atif Amin and Mohammed Sajid at Batla House.
Sunday was the second anniversary of the Batla House encounter when the Delhi Police had allegedly killed two IM terrorists in an encounter. Special cell officer Mohan Chand Sharma was also killed in the shootout.
Intelligence agencies seem to be toeing the IM line on Sunday’s shooting, but it does leave a number of questions unanswered.
For starters, why would IM carry out an attack two years after the Batla House encounter and not on the first anniversary? While the police claim Sunday’s shooting to be the handiwork of local miscreants, intelligence sources termed it as a terrorist attack.

Dhaka: Evidence ready against 12 including Islamists

War crimes investigators and prosecutors have collected evidence against 12 people including former Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Ghulam Azam and BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War.
Five of them are now in prison in two cases filed on charges of crimes against humanity.
Moves would be made to arrest the rest, Zead Al Malum, member of the prosecution team, told journalists at his office at the Old High Court Building yesterday. He however did not elaborate.
Their involvement in crimes against humanity became evident in primary investigation, he said.
Crimes against humanity fall under article 3(2) of International Crimes Tribunal Act, 1973, which also covers offences like war crimes, genocide, murder, abduction, confinement, torture and rape.

JEDDAH: Police warn against National Day violence

JEDDAH: With Saudi National Day only a few days away, many people are calling for an increased police presence on streets to prevent youths from going wild, racing cars, creating chaos and harassing families as they did last year.
The National Day is widely celebrated across the Kingdom with Saudi youths wearing green clothes, painting their faces green, decorating their cars with Saudi flags, driving fast and dancing on streets.
However, last year's celebrations were blighted with violence and the arrests of 225 young Saudis following riots across the Kingdom. In Alkhobar, 12 teenagers involved in a rampage on the Corniche were given 30 lashes in a public flogging. The youngsters broke the doors and windows of more than 13 shops, damaging goods inside.

UN award for Bangladesh

Bangladesh received an UN award for its remarkable achievements in attaining the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) particularly in reducing child mortality rate.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina accepted the award at a colourful function at Astoria Hotel in New York yesterday.
The award was conferred upon Bangladesh and five other countries a day ahead of the MDG conference on the sidelines of the 65th UN General Assembly (UNGA).
The award came 10 years after the general assembly of the global forum that had set the 8-point MDG at the UNGA session in 2000, which Sheikh Hasina attended as the head of the government during her previous tenure as Prime Minister.

Ayodhya judge issues dissenting note, favours conciliation

In a surprise move, one of the three judges of the Allahabad High Court's special Ayodhya bench Monday issued a dissenting note on the order issued by his two co-judges and allowed postponement of the verdict on the long-pending Babri Masjid/Ramjanmabhoomi row.
Justice Dharma Veer Sharma also disagreed with his co-judges of the Lucknow bench of the court -- Justice S.U. Khan and Justice Sudhir Aggarwal -- on the question of exploring an out-of-court settlement on the issue and rooted for mediation or conciliation.
The bench is slated to give its verdict on the case Friday.
Justice Sharma was not in agreement with the ruling of his colleagues to impose a fine of Rs.50,000 on the parties who sought a postponement.

RSS-VHP statements on Ayodhya cannot be trusted: Digvijay

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Digvijay Singh on Monday said he could not trust RSS- VHP statements of respecting the court verdict on Ayodhya title suit as his party had made the mistake once in 1992 by accepting their commitment to safeguard the Babri mosque.
The AICC general secretary told reporters, "I can never trust BJP, VHP and RSS. They made similar commitments in 1992 and we went by their affidavit. Instead, despite their statements, I have information they are making secret preparations (for post-judgment protests). There should be a close eye on their activities."
Singh said the saffron family had carried out processions with its members wielding swords in Madhya Pradesh and also indulged in sloganeering in court last week. "They are unreliable and there are fringe elements which are not in the control of RSS either," he said, adding, "People of India have been fooled once, they will not be misled again by VHP and RSS."

Bombay HC preempts Kasab's appeal, will confirm death sentence

Making it clear that it could not further wait for Ajmal Kasab to file an appeal against the trial court's order sentencing him to death for his role in the 26/11 terror attack, the Bombay High Court today said it would proceed with confirmation of death sentence from October 11 or 18.
Government lawyer Ujjwal Nikam said the Pakistani terrorist had a threat perception and bringing him to court would be a great risk, to which the court suggested that Kasab could appear through the medium of video conference.
In a related development, an activist of right wing organisation, Azad Hind Sena, made an allegation in the High Court saying that Ujjwal Nikam was a member of Kasab's gang and that the 26/11 attacks were not at the behest of Pakistan but because of him (activist).
The court, however, refused to entertain him saying he had not filed intervention application and asked police to remove him from the court after Nikam informed that another bench had earlier banned him from filing vexatious petitions.

Quran burning: US pastor gets £1,00,000 security bill

The US pastor, who hogged the limelight after vowing to burn the Quran, is hit with a £1,00,000 bill to cover cost of the police security for his 9/11 stunt, a British media report said.
More than 200 police officers were on duty at the church in Florida where 58-year-old Terry Jones planned a burning of the holy book of Islam. The huge security operation was put into place even though the pastor had called off the protest, which was condemned by US President Barack Obama.
The police bill in Gainesville comes to more than £50,000 pounds and the Sheriff’s office spent a similar amount after putting almost all its officers on duty, the Daily Express reported.

Muslims in Oz protest against ban burqa plan

Muslims, including women and children, in Australia have staged a march in Sydney to protest against a proposal to ban burqa in the country, condemning it as part of the West’s “war on Islam”.
Women with veils and placards rallied in hundreds showing “my burqa — conviction not coercion” and “leave my mum alone — we love niqab” on Sunday in a park in Punchbowl, southwestern Sydney, according to media reports here.
The protest against calls to ban the full face covering was organised by a coalition of Muslim groups, including Islamist political party Hizbut Tahrir, which favours the creation of an Islamic caliphate, and the fundamentalist Ahlus Sunna wal Jamaah Association.
A female speaker, Umm Jamaal ud-Din, told the rally a ban proposed by Christian Democrat MP Fred Nile, which was due to be debated in the New South Wales Parliament this month, had fuelled intolerance and bigotry.

India ready to discuss all outstanding issues with Pak: Nirupama Rao

BOSTON: India is prepared to "discuss all outstanding issues" with Pakistan, including the issue of Jammu and Kashmir, to ensure stability in the South Asian region, India's Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao said here.
"The issue of Jammu & Kashmir comes up in our relationship with Pakistan and we've said very clearly, very confidently and very transparently that we are prepared to discuss all outstanding issues with Pakistan," Rao said on Monday.
Rao added that India wants to "persevere in our dialogue with Pakistan. It is not about segmenting this dialogue or taking away the complicated issues from it saying we are not ready to discuss it.
That is certainly not our approach. We want to discuss all the outstanding issues and that will also include the issue of Jammu and Kashmir."
The top diplomat, who was in Washington earlier to discuss President Obama's upcoming India visit in November, stressed that Kashmir is an internal matter as far as India is concerned.

China to build mega N-plant for Pak

BEIJING: China's main nuclear energy corporation is in talks to build a 1-gigawatt atomic power plant in Pakistan, an executive said on Monday, a move that could intensify international unease about their nuclear embrace.
China has already helped Pakistan build its main nuclear power facility at Chashma in Punjab province, where one reactor is running and another near finished, and it has contracts to build two more there, despite the qualms of other governments.
Qiu Jiangang, vice president of the China National Nuclear Corp (CNNC), told a meeting in Beijing that the company was already looking beyond those deals to an even bigger plant. "Both sides are in discussions over the CNNC exporting a one-gigawatt nuclear plant to Pakistan," he said.
Qiu confirmed the two countries had signed contracts to build the No 3 and No 4 reactors of about 300 megawatts each at Chashma. He did not give details about who was involved in discussions for the bigger plant and how far talks had progressed.

Flood victim kills self at Gilani house

MULTAN: A Pakistani flood victim who set himself alight outside the PM's home died on Monday, police said.
Police official Hasan Bukhsh said Mohammad Akram died in a hospital in the eastern city of Multan. He had doused himself with petrol and set fire to himself on Sunday outside a house belonging to PM Yusaf Raza Gilani in Multan.
Bukush said Akram shouted he was jobless and sick of his life before he torched himself. He said the 30-year-old security guard lost his home in the floods. He is survived by his wife and five children.
Gilani later expressed condolences to the family by phone and said they would get Rs 500,000 as compensation . Pakistan's government has been severely criticized for its response to this summer's floods.

All-party team to visit Kashmir's Tangmarg

SRINAGAR: The all-party delegation will on Tuesday visit Tangmarg, which witnessed incidents of arson recently, hospitals in the city to meet those injured during clashes, and the Hazratbal shrine.
The high-level delegation led by Union home minister P Chidambaram, which yesterday held discussions with various shades of opinion including the hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, will form three groups.
One of the groups will visit Tangmarg to make an on-the-spot assessment of the September 13 incidents of arson in which a Missionary school and several government buildings were set ablaze by a mob.
Five persons were killed in this incident after police had to fire at the unruly crowd, who were protesting against the alleged desecration of Holy Quran in the United States.
The second group will visit hospitals in the city to meet those injured in clashes with security forces.

IN AN attempt to bring all stakeholders on board to break the current deadlock, teams of the allparty delegation visiting Kashmir reached out to the moderates as well as hawks among Hurriyat Conference leaders on Monday. The separatists were given a patient hearing and, in a first, New Delhi engaged politically with hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
Chairman of the inflexible Hurriyat faction Geelani welcomed the delegation members into his house at Hyderpora, only to unleash an attack on India calling it a “colonial and imperial power” that has “occupied Jammu and Kashmir illegally”. He said peace and normalcy could be restored in Kashmir only after India accepted it as disputed territory.
The team heard out his diatribe. Union ministers P. Chidambaram, Farooq Abdullah and Pawan Bansal as well as BJP leaders Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley did not visit the separatist leadership.

SRINAGAR: Making a fresh demand for a result-oriented dialogue, the moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) today demanded setting up of Kashmir committees in India and Pakistan to find an everlasting solution to the Kashmir issue.
"We look forward to entering into a dialogue based on shared commitments...Let the Government of India establish and empower an official body, a Kashmir Committee, consisting of senior representatives of major political parties to develop and enter into a process of engagement with representatives of the people of Jammu and Kashmir," Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and JKLF Chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik said in a joint memorandum.
"We believe that a similar Kashmir Committee, bringing together all political forces, should also be established in Pakistan. We will suggest to political parties in Pakistan that this be done," the memorandum addressed to the all-party delegation said.

Hindu group expresses concern over rights violation in Pak

WASHINGTON: A delegation of the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) has expressed its concerns over the alleged human rights violation of the minority Hindu Sindhi community in Pakistan to the country's Embassy officials here.
The HAF delegation during its meeting with the Pakistan Embassy officials proposed to send a team of Hindu American physicians on an immediate basis to offer medical-aid and supplies specifically to the people of the Sindh region in the country.
"The Pakistani Hindu Sindhi community requires unique dietary, psychological and rehabilitative needs," HAF's Arvind Chandrakantan said.
"We sincerely believe that a medical team from the Hindu American Foundation with its combined expertise in a variety of medical sub-specialities can evaluate, provide medical care for and help coordinate the future needs of this community," he added.

VIENNA: Arab states backed by Iran are expected at this week’s assembly meeting of the UN atomic watchdog to push Israel to join a global anti-nuclear arms pact. Washington warns that singling out Israel at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) may upset broader efforts to ban weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East, as well as the restarted Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.
Arab diplomats argue Israel’s presumed nuclear arsenal is a threat to regional security. They say their draft IAEA resolution calling on the Jewish state to accede to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) could help support peace.
Israel, which would have to forswear nuclear weaponry if it signed the pact, condemns the non-binding Arab resolution as a politically motivated bid to divert attention from what it sees as the region’s main proliferation threats of Iran and Syria.

Shoura gives strong backing to King Abdullah's new charitable initiative

RIYADH: The Shoura Council has thrown its weight behind the King Abdullah International Foundation for Charity and Humanitarian Activities (KAIFCH) and has commended its objectives as spelled out by Prince Khaled bin Abdullah, deputy chief of the KAIFCH board of trustees.
The establishment of the KAIFCH, which seeks to promote interfaith dialogue and present a true picture of Islam and Muslims around the globe, was discussed at the 43rd meeting of the Shoura Council on Sunday.
Shoura Council Chairman Abdullah Al-Asheikh congratulated Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah for launching the charity, adding that it will go a long way in alleviating the suffering of people worldwide. The foundation, he said, would confront the challenges facing the Muslim Ummah, extend aid to needy people and help disseminate Islamic ideals regarding world fraternity, tolerance, peace and justice.

Thousands flee Yemen fighting

SANAA: Up to 12,000 civilians have fled their homes in the southern Yemeni province of Shabwa because of heavy fighting between government forces and suspected Al-Qaeda militants, according to Yemen's Red Crescent.
Three Al-Qaeda militants and two soldiers have died in the clashes that erupted Sunday at dawn, a security source said.
Between 8,000 and 12,000 people have left the town of Al-Hota and surrounding areas due to the violence, the local branch of the Red Crescent said in a report to the Red Cross in Sanaa.
Yemen's Defense Ministry said in its online newspaper that security forces engaged in fierce clashes in Shabwa with "armed elements" from Al-Qaeda, among whom were foreigners, including Saudis, "who are trying to mingle with the population."

Dhaka: Jamaat-e-Islami leader Sayedee in tribunal dock

Detained Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Delwar Hossain Sayedee on Tuesday was produced before the International Crimes Tribunal in connection with 1971 war crime charges.
Prior to producing him before the crimes tribunal, the jail authorities brought Sayedee to the prisons of the tribunal from the Dhaka Central Jail.
The tribunal began its day's proceedings around 10:32am with starting hear the eight applications earlier filed by Sayedee and four other top Jamaat leaders.
The four other Jamaat leaders who earlier filed the petitions are Motiur Rahman Nizami, Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mojahid, Muhammad Kamaruzzaman and Abdul Quader Molla.
They filed the applications for withdrawal of the tribunal orders that earlier issued arrest warrants against them. The applications also sought the court orders to acquit them of the war crime charges and for necessary documents and papers.
On August 10 this year, the tribunal directed the prison authorities to produce Sayedee before it on August 24, but the tribunal fixed September 21 date as the structural reform of the court building was going on.

Somalia PM Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke resigns amid tensions

MOGADISHU: Somalia's prime minister resigned on Tuesday to prevent what he called political turmoil amid an impasse with the country's president.
Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke told reporters he was resigning while standing alongside President Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed, who thanked the prime minister for what he called a "courageous decision."
"After seeing that the political turmoil between me and the president has caused security vulnerability, I have decided to resign to save the nation and give a chance to others," the prime minister said.
The resignation comes amid a rift between Sharmarke and Ahmed over a new draft constitution. The two have not gotten along for months, and a vote of confidence on the prime minister had been scheduled over the weekend, though it was postponed.

UNITED NATIONS: Nations and groups supporting Pakistan's democratic advances promised to give the country millions of dollars more in flood aid, but some insisted that Pakistan itself must lead the way on recovery and account publicly for all funds.
The new pledges came on Sunday, two days after the UN made its largest disaster appeal ever, asking the world's governments to raise a total of $2 billion for Pakistani flood victims.
The floods have killed more than 1,700 people and damaged or destroyed nearly 1.9 homes since the raging waters began spreading across the country six weeks ago. Food, shelter and other emergency aid is still being supplied to displaced people in areas that remain under water.
During Sunday's highlevel ministerial meeting at UN headquarters, Britain committed an additional $109 million toward relief efforts, more than doubling the $100 million earlier pledged, and the US raised its pledge to $345 million. The US total included $75 million that the US Agency for International Development announced on Sunday it was giving to the WFP.

FBI overstepped in probing terror links after 9/11: Review

WASHINGTON: The FBI overstepped its authority in investigating left-wing domestic groups after the September 11, 2001 attacks and then misled Congress about its actions, an inspector general's report said Monday.
The report said the FBI improperly used the cover of "terrorism" to investigate a number of domestic activist groups from 2001 to 2006 including Greenpeace, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and the pacifist Thomas Merton Center.
The Justice Department inspector general's report, requested by Congress four years ago, said the FBI classified these investigations as "domestic terrorism cases" but had little to back this up.
It said this was based on "potential crimes" including trespassing and vandalism "that could alternatively have been classified differently."

Meeting Kashmir separatists not a good idea, says BJP

SRINAGAR: Indicating her reservations at some members of the all-party delegation meeting separatists, senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday said this was not part of the team's "mandate" and suggested the decision was not a collective one.
"That was their own decision, not that of the delegation. If some want to go, how can we stop them? They went but our decision was not to go. So we didn't go," Sushma said.
Sushma made these remarks when asked by newsmen for her response to discussions three groups from the all-party team had with the separatist leaders after some members went out of their way visiting their homes yesterday.
Three teams of the delegation met Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, leaders of the hardline and moderate Hurriyat groups respectively at their homes and JKLF chief Yasin Malik at his office in full media glare.

While generally insightful and sensibly written, the article also highlights the very misconceptions that riddle the bizarre debate pitting American Muslims against much of the government, the mainstream media and most of the general public.
This is how Goodstein lays the ground for her discussion: “For nine years after the attacks of Sept. 11, many American Muslims made concerted efforts to build relationships with non-Muslims, to make it clear they abhor terrorism, to educate people about Islam and to participate in interfaith service projects. They took satisfaction in the observations by many scholars that Muslims in America were more successful and assimilated than Muslims in Europe.”

2 Mauritanian Soldiers Die of Injuries after Clashes with Al-Qaeda

Two Mauritanian soldiers died on Monday of injuries they had during clashes with Al-Qaeda militants, raising the number of soldiers killed in three days of clashes to eight, a military source said
"Two soldiers who were seriously injured and evacuated to our hospital have succumbed to their injuries," the source told AFP in Nouakchott.
According to an official toll given on Saturday, the fighting in northern Mali had left 12 militants dead and an unknown number wounded, and six dead and eight wounded in the ranks of the army.
Another six men with suspected ties to "Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb" (AQIM) were "taken prisoner" by the Mauritanian army, a security source said Monday.
The Mauritanian army launched the offensive on Friday after a convoy of militants was spotted approaching the Mauritanian border from Mali.

UK troops leave Afghan district

Britain's military handed the US responsibility on Monday for a dangerous district in southern Afghanistan that has been the scene of some of the bloodiest fighting by British troops for the past four years. British forces arrived in Helmand province's northern Sangin district in 2006 and have lost more than 100 troops there in fierce fighting with Taliban insurgents — nearly a third of the 337 fatalities it has suffered in Afghanistan since 2001.
NATO said the 40 Commando Royal Marines were being reassigned throughout the centre of Helmand, which remains a volatile battleground even though tens of thousands of NATO and Afghan troops moved into the area in February.
“British forces have served in Sangin over the last four years and should be very proud of the achievements they have made in one of the most challenging areas of Afghanistan,” British Defence Secretary Liam Fox said.

“He (Ban) hoped that Iran will engage constructively in negotiations” with the ‘E3+3,’ which is made up of the United Kingdom, United States, China, France, Germany and Russia, it said.
Last week, Ban expressed “concern” at the findings in the latest report by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The direction came following an RTI petition filed by Mumbai-based activist Chetan Kothari who sought to know from the Delhi government the reasons for delay in deciding the mercy plea.
The government had refused to provide information saying the reasons could not be provided in the RTI reply as they did not come under the definition of information given in the law. It said there was no time limit fixed for deciding on mercy pleas. In its reply, CPIO said the mercy application had been forwarded to the LG's office and he did not have any information after that.

Krishna-Qureshi meet likely on UNGA fringes

This will be apart from the three occasions when the two ministers will be in the same room together.
It isn't as if the Indian establishment is overly enthusiastic about holding talks with the Pakistani foreign minister after the disaster in Islamabad. But the government has been told by the prime minister that India
has to "persevere" with Pakistan. To that extent, the two foreign offices are working on organising a bilateral meeting.

World cannot pay for Pakistan flood disaster: Holbrooke

The day after world donors raised aid pledges to almost two billion dollars, Holbrooke said the eventual cost of the monsoon disaster could run into the “tens of billions of dollars.”
“The international community will not be able to pick up the full cost of reconstruction,” Holbrooke said.

Children without food in flood-hit areas face death

Their newborn sister already died on the ground inside this steamy shelter at just four days old, after the family’s escape from violent floods that drowned a huge swath of Pakistan. Now the girls, ages one and two, are slowly starving, with shriveled arms and legs as fragile as twigs.
More than 100,000 children left homeless by Pakistan’s floods are in danger of dying because they simply do not have enough to eat, according to UNICEF.
Children already weak from living on too little food in poor rural areas before the floods are fighting to stay alive, as diarrhoea, respiratory diseases and malaria attack their emaciated bodies.

The three-day long regional conference organised by the South Asian Partnership (SAP) was held in a local hotel with the aim of common understanding on the issues of gender sensitivity would improve democratic practices in different countries of the region.
The conference was chaired by Rohit Kumar Nepali, the SAP executive director.
At the inaugural session, Rohit said that critical reviewing and reforming of existing laws and policies, redefining the political agendas and reflecting upon the thoughts and actions to bring about change would be the core objective of the conference.

Ahmadinejad says future is Iran's

NEW YORK: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that "the future belongs to Iran," and challenged the United States to accept that his country has a major role in the world.
The comments came in an hourlong interview Sunday with The Associated Press on the first day of his visit to the United States to attend the annual General Assembly of the United Nations this week.
He insisted that his government does not want an atomic bomb — something he has said in the past — and that Iran is only seeking peace and a nuclear-weapons-free world. He repeatedly sidestepped questions on when Iran would resume talks on its disputed nuclear program, and he said anti-nuclear sanctions against his government would have no effect.
Appearing calm and self-assured on his seventh trip to the United States, the Iranian president showed every sign of being in command of himself and prepared to deflect questions about his government's harsh suppression of opposition forces after last year's disputed election that returned him to a second term.

Rights group says Syria detained teen blogger

BEIRUT: Syrian authorities have been holding a 19-year-old blogger incommunicado for the past nine months, an international human rights group said Monday.
The New York-based Human Rights Watch called for the immediate release of Tal Al-Mallohi, who has not been seen since Syrian security agents detained her Dec. 27 after summoning her for questioning.
“Detaining a high school student for nine months without charge is typical of the cruel, arbitrary behavior of Syria’s security services,” said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch.
Authorities have not allowed Al-Mallohi’s family to communicate with her since she was picked up by security agents and have not offered any explanation for her detention, the rights group said.

The move against Ayatollah Hussein Al-Najati — the Bahraini representative of Iraq's most powerful religious figure — follows a wave of arrests in Bahrain since August. Al-Najati is the Bahrain representative for Iraq's Grand Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani, the country's most influential Shiite preacher.
Pulling the citizenship could set the stage for the eventual expulsion of Al-Najati and his family.
Kuwait stripped activist Yasser Al-Habeeb of his citizenship, accusing him of abusing religious symbols and attempting to trigger sectarian tensions.
More than two weeks ago, Al-Habeeb made disparaging remarks against Ayesha, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), triggering a sectarian tension that prompted the government to ban all public gatherings on Sunday.

Attacker blows himself up in Somali presidency

MOGADISHU — A suspected Al Qaeda-linked attacker disguised as a government soldier blew himself up Monday inside the presidential compound in Mogadishu, a security official told AFP.
It was not immediately clear whether any other casualties resulted from the attack, which took place as a convoy of the African Union mission in Somalia (AMISOM) was entering the compound.
‘One man believed to belong to the Shebab managed to enter the presidential compound. He passed the first gate but AMISOM opened fire,’ the government official said on condition of anonymity, referring to the insurgent group.
‘He was shot before he could reach the second gate and he detonated his suicide vest,’ the official added.
The official could not confirm whether President Sharif Shaikh Ahmed was in the palace at the time of the attack.
