LUCKNOW: Even as the case of three divorced women who assaulted the Darul Qaza maulvis is still fresh in public memory, 78-year-old all-women outfit Bazm-e-Khawateen is gearing up to challenge the might of mullahs once again.
Last Tuesday, Beghum Shahnaz Sidrat Ansari, the gutsy head of Bazm-e-Khawateen, sought an appointment with the president of All-India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), Maulana Rabe Hasan Nadvi, "in a bid to thrash out a few gender specific issues".
The politely worded letter that she sent to him is set to stir a hornets nest as it throws a ticklish poser before the highly respected Islamic scholar -- in case of a clash between the two, which one prevails, dictate of the Board or law of the land?
If the maulana permits, Sidrat hopes to escort a delegation of abandoned Muslim women with a copy of a latest judgment by Delhi high court. The court has ruled that a divorced Muslim woman is entitled to maintenance for herself and also for her children till she remarries, Sidrat reads out. However, the Board has consistently held that a man is expected to bear the expenses of his divorced wife only for three months, 10 days till the "Iddat" period lasts. This confusion needs to be cleared and I am certain an interpretation of Shariat law in this regard by the maulana will remove all doubts, Sidrat told TOI.
In fact this is the second time Sidrat has written to the Board. Last time she sent a letter to the secretary, Maulana Nizamuddin airing her reservations about Board's silence over triple talaq. The laxity shown by the Board has made Muslim women extremely insecure and something needs to be done urgently to restore their faith in the AIMPLB, she wrote. Till today there has been no response. This time she has decided to address the president who, she says, is "known to be a moderate, extremely just and would therefore give an ear to the voice of fifty per cent of his followers".
Saba Farukhi, the general secretary of Bazm-e- Khawteen cites the alarming evidence, data compiled by the organisation which has provoked them into action. The records of 50,000 Muslim families show that while the cases of divorce among Muslims have registered a jump between 20 and 25 per cent in past decade, not even one per cent among them have been getting any maintenance allowance from their spouse, she pointed out. We expect the Board to show sensitivity to this issue, she said.
We will wait for a week and if there is no response the organisation, Sidrat said, we will approach the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court to take continuance of the matter and intervene.

Mangalore: An Iftar party at a Hindu temple? That too in Krishnapura? Yes, the people of Krishnapura, a sensitive coastal town which has been hogging the limelight for wrong reasons such as communal riots, attacks, curfews and tensions for many years, have now sent a message of peace, religious harmony and co-existence to the entire coastal Karnataka.
In a unique gesture of secular culture, the administration committee of Baikampadi Sri Sarala Dhoomavathi Daivasthana of 7th Block, Krishnapura hosted a rare Iftar party at the temple premises in association with Youth Wing of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Krishnapura Circle on Sunday, September 5.
Nearly two hundred Hindus and Muslims got together and promised each other to strive towards establishing peace in the entire town.
“This time your number is in hundreds. Next year it will increase to thousands”, said S Pramod Bhandari, President of Temple in a highly emotional tone.
“Humanity, love and brotherhood are the core elements of religion. If we are truly religious and pious people we have to bridge the gap between the followers of different religions,” he said.
Muhammad Kunnhi, Manager of Shanthi Prakashana in his presidential address called upon the gathering to become the true followers of the original messages of the religion, which preaches mankind to live with harmony.
Talking about the month of Ramadan and fasting, Kunnhi said that a person should cultivate self control through fasting. “A Muslim cannot be a true Muslim if he cannot control his bad emotions”, he said.

Suicide attack in Pakistan police colony kills 21

A SUICIDE bomber struck at a police residential colony, killing at least 21 people and injuring over 40 others, at Kohat in northwest Pakistan on Tuesday.
The attacker detonated an explosiveladen vehicle shortly after an iftar gathering.
A majority of the 25 flats in the colony collapsed due to the powerful blast, which was heard from several kilometres away.
According to the police, 21 bodies have been pulled out of the rubble. This includes six children and eight women.
They said six to seven people are still feared to be buried in the debris. Rescue operation is underway and it is feared the toll would rise.
The attack came a day after another suicide bomber targeted a police station in the Lakki Marwat district of Khyber- Pakhtunkhwa province, killing 20 people, including policemen and children.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack but Taliban militants are being suspected.
They are believed to be behind a wave of suicide attacks across Pakistan in the past week.
Bashir Bilour, senior minister in the Khyber- Pakhtunkhwa government, said over 40 people, including women and children, were injured. Bilour confirmed that the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber.
Witnesses said they had seen a suspicious vehicle in the vicinity of the police colony before the blast.
Kohat commissioner Khalid Khan said the actual target of the attacker may have been the Police Lines, located near the residential colony.
However, the bomber must have been unable to hit the Police Lines because of extensive security arrangements and blockades, he said. Power supply to the area was disrupted by the blast, affecting rescue operations.
Rescue workers faced difficulty in clearing the rubble due to lack of heavy machinery. The police have cordoned off the area and launched a search operation. The injured were rushed to hospitals in Kohat, which declared an emergency.
TV channels quoted their sources as saying intelligence agencies had issued a warning that militants could carry out terrorist attacks across Khyber- Pakhtunkhwa province in the run- up to the Eid- ul- Fitr festival.

Islam will sooner or later dominate Europe: Italian priest

LONDON: Christians in Europe must have more children or else the continent would become Islamised, said a Vatican official who predicted that Islam would "sooner rather than later conquer the majority in Europe".
Italian Father Piero Gheddo said the poor birth rate among Europeans coupled with waves of Muslim immigrants could lead to Europe getting dominated by Islam.
"The challenge must be taken seriously," Daily Telegraph Tuesday quoted Father Gheddo of the Vatican's Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions as saying.
He said: "Certainly from a demographic point of view, as it is clear to everyone that Italians are decreasing by 120,000 or 130,000 persons a year because of abortion and broken families - while among the more than 200,000 legal immigrants a year in Italy, more than half are Muslims and Muslim families, which have a much higher level of growth."
"Newspapers and television programmes never speak of this. However, an answer must be given above all in the religious and cultural fields and in the area of identity."
The official held Christians responsible for failing to live up to their own beliefs that led to the creation of a "religious vacuum" being filled by Islam.
He said Islam would "sooner rather than later conquer the majority in Europe".
"The fact is that, as a people, we are becoming ever more pagan and the religious vacuum is inevitably filled by other proposals and religious forces."
Gheddo went on to say that Christians were also making themselves vulnerable to secularists' attacks.
He stated that when "religious practice diminishes in Christian Europe and indifference spreads, Christianity and the Church are attacked".
"If we consider ourselves a Christian country, we should return to the practice of Christian life, which would also solve the problem of empty cradles."
A few months back, a Czech cardinal had also blamed lapsed Catholics for Europe's Islamisation.
Cardinal Miloslav Vlk had said Muslims were well placed to fill the spiritual void "created as Europeans systematically empty the Christian content of their lives".
He said that in case Christians didn't wake up to the threat they would one day realise that they don't have the strength to make their mark on society.

Muslims in Kerala take pledge against terrorism

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, India: Hundreds of thousands of Muslims took the pledge against terrorism at the end of the marathon prayers on Lailat Al-Qadr, the night of power, overnight Monday.
Believers started pouring into Swalath Nagar in Malappuram district well before the breaking of fast at a mass iftar after which the prayers began. The annual event was organized by Ma’dinu Ssaquafathil Islamiyya, which runs a group of religious and educational institutions. “We, the servants of Allah and followers of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), affirm in good faith that we will strive for the virtue and well being of our family, friends, teachers and the entire humanity. We will be in the forefront of giving a helping hand to the poor and the oppressed,” devotees repeated the pledge administered by Sayyid Ibrahimul Khaleelul Bukhari, chairman of Ma’din.

Terrorists have planned attacks on Eid

LAHORE: Terrorists have planned suicide attacks across the country on the eve of Eidul Fitr, sources said on Monday. According to an intelligence report, terrorists have planned to attack religious gatherings, public places, busy markets, important buildings and sensitive installations, as they had carried out attacks in Lahore and Quetta. The National Crisis Management Cell and the Interior Ministry have issued a circular to the home departments of all provincial governments, the Islamabad chief commissioner and the inspector general (IG) of police, provincial police chiefs and other law enforcement agencies to immediately put security on high alert in their respective areas to defeat the nefarious designs of terrorists.

This Eid, American Muslims pray for their safety

COLUMBUS, Ohio: “O’ Allah, it’s not easy to be an American Muslim, O’ Allah protect the American Muslims,” that was Zerqa Abid’s voice imploring Allah at the Noor Islamic Cultural Center. She was winding up a lecture session given to a room full of young, enthusiastic Muslim girls by Saira Alludin and Asma Mubinuddin, president of the "Council on American Islamic Relations' Ohio Chapter."
That prayer summed up the state of American Muslims across the country. There is a feeling of unease as Eid Al-Fitr is approaching, close to the anniversary of 9/11. Also weighing on the minds of Muslims is the threat of the Dove World Outreach Center whose Pastor Terry Jones has suddenly become popular by threatening to burn copies of the Qur’an on Sept. 11.
“I hope Eid brings us the usual joys. We are getting quite tired of all of the Islamophobia that is surrounding us,” said Umm Kulthoom.

‘Iranian woman could be stoned to death soon’

The lawyer for an Iranian woman sentenced to be stoned on an adultery conviction has said that he and her children are worried the delayed execution could be carried out soon with the end of a moratorium on death sentences for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
In an unusual turn in the case, the lawyer also confirmed on Monday that Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani was lashed 99 times last week in a separate punishment meted out because a British newspaper ran a picture of an unveiled woman mistakenly identified as her. Under Iran’s clerical rule, women must cover their hair in public. The newspaper later apologised for the error.
With the end of Ramadan this week, the mother of two could be executed ‘any moment’, said her lawyer, Javid Houtan Kian. The sentence was put on hold in July after an international outcry over the brutality of the punishment, and it is now being reviewed by Iran’s supreme court.

Iran tells world ‘don’t make stoning rights issue’

TEHRAN: Foreign countries should not interfere in Iran’s legal system and stop trying to turn the case of a woman sentenced to be stoned to death for adultery into a human rights issue, Iranian government spokesperson said on Tuesday.
The case of the 43-year-old mother of two, condemned to death for illicit sex and charged with involvement in her husband’s murder, provoked an international outcry, with Brazil offering her asylum and the Vatican speaking out against the punishment.
The spokesperson said that the furore was based on false information about Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani’s case. “Unfortunately, (they are) defending a person who is being tried for murder and adultery, which are two major crimes of this lady and should not become a human rights issue,” Foreign Ministry Ramin Mehmanparast told a news conference.

Two US soldiers killed, nine wounded in Iraq

BAGHDAD - Two U.S. soldiers were killed and nine wounded on Tuesday when a gunman in Iraqi army uniform attacked them at an Iraqi base, U.S. officials said a week after Washington declared a formal end to U.S. combat operations.
The soldiers were part of a security detail for a U.S. company commander who was meeting members of Iraq’s security forces at a commando compound near the city of Tuz Khurmato, 170 km (105 miles) north of Baghdad, a U.S. military statement said.
The assailant was shot and killed, the statement said.
“Initial reports indicate 11 U.S. soldiers were engaged with small arms fire, killing two and wounding nine,” the statement said.
They were the first American soldiers killed since U.S. forces formally ended combat operations in Iraq a week ago, more than seven years after the invasion that ousted dictator Saddam Hussein.

Over 550 people embrace Islam in Abu Dhabi

A total of 559 people from various nations including India living in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) embraced Islam in 2010. The number of new converts increased by 25 percent in the first half of 2010 compared to the like period last year, the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD) said
in a statement.
There were 486 people who embraced Islam in the first six months of 2009.
People from the Philippines topped the list, which also includes India, US, Finland, Italy, Sweden, Belgium, Australia, France, Mexico, Poland, Romania, Ethiopia, Vietnam, Russia, Britain, Spain and Norway, among others.

59 percent of Israeli teens don’t want Arab students in their class

RAMALLAH: Two-thirds of Israeli teens say that Arab students living in Israel do not enjoy equal rights in schools, according to a study.
The survey, prepared for the “Education in the Digital Age” conference in the northern city of Haifa on Monday, also revealed that 59 percent of teens aged 15 to 18 believe that Arab students should not have equal rights in schools.
According to the survey, 96 percent of respondents want Israel to be a Jewish and democratic state.
However, 27 percent believe that those who object to government policies should be tried in court, while 41 percent support stripping them of their citizenship.
Just under a third said they would not be willing to learn in a classroom with one or more students with special needs. This number increased to a half when the same question was asked regarding Arab students. In addition, 23 percent said that they wouldn’t want gays or lesbians in their class.

Tribes clash in Kurram; 14 killed

PARACHINAR, Sept 7: Fourteen people were killed and 20 injured in clashes continuing for four days between two tribes in Shalozan area of Kurram tribal region.
According to sources, the clashes Bangash and Mangal tribes erupted following a dispute over water distribution and both sides used heavy weapons.
Tribal elders were trying to broker a ceasefire.
Meanwhile, in Mandan area of Central Kurram, militants attacked a house, killed two men and a woman. They also kidnapped two men.
According to sources, a man kidnapped by the militants had escaped and taken shelter in the house. He was among the two kidnapped by the militants.

2 ASWJ members killed in Karachi

KARACHI: Two members of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) were gunned down in Karachi on Tuesday. Mushtaq (35) was shot dead early in the morning in Manzoor Colony, Mehmoodabad within the Baloch Colony police precincts. Mushtaq was critically injured and shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where he died. ASWJ spokesman Ahsanullah Farooqi said that Mushtaq was the group’s Mehmoodabad president. The second ASWJ member was shot dead on Tuesday night in the city.

Jewish groups get most homeland security grants; few Muslim groups apply

Jewish groups in Maryland received over $1 million in federal grants to protect them from terrorism this year, while Baltimore-area Muslim organizations, which had gotten grants before, did not apply.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security awards grants annually to nonprofit organizations at high risk for terrorist attacks through its Urban Area Security Initiative program. First awarded in 2008, the grants are for security equipment like alarms, cameras, lighting and fences.
“Primarily, an eligible applicant has to be at high risk for terrorist attack or to have a role in responding to and recovering from a terrorist attack,” said Major Jeff Caslin of the Baltimore County Police and chairman of the Baltimore Urban Area Security Initiative subcommittee that oversees the grant program. Most of this year’s applications came from Jewish organizations.

Interfaith leaders: Fear, intolerance emerge over Islamic center

Washington (CNN) -- Interfaith leaders from across the country will continue their push Tuesday to "address the growing tide of fear and intolerance" that has emerged in the debate over a Muslim community center planned near ground zero in New York.
The Washington meeting is being organized by the Islamic Society of North America.
"Participants are expected to release a joint declaration underscoring the clergy's moral responsibility in communicating the need for solidarity and compassion and to lay out a plan of action for interfaith collaboration," a statement from the group said.
The debate has been heightened by a Florida church's plan to burn copies of the Quran on Saturday, the ninth anniversary of the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington.

Ayodhya a national issue, not political: Rajnath Singh

Senior BJP leader and former party president Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said building a Ram temple at Ayodhya was a national and cultural issue and that it should not be given political colour.
Singh, who was here to release the State party’s new magazine, Maru Kamal Darpan, told the media that while political parties were free to express their opinion, the BJP firmly believed there should be a temple at Ayodhya. He hoped that a day would come when people see a temple at the site.
Replying to a question, he said his party had wanted a temple there since the NDA Government, but as the coalition regime was operating on a common minimum programme, the party could do little in that direction.
Commenting on the functioning of the UPA Government, the former party president said, “Rising prices of essential commodities and the growing terrorism have become the USP of this Government.”

Kalyan issues warning before verdict

Uttar Pradesh former Chief Minister Kalyan Singh has said the Ayodhya judgement, if it goes against Hindus, will not be acceptable to the community. He also said if his assertion was taken as a contempt of court, he was ready to face any action.
A former BJP mascot, Singh — who was in prison for a day for contempt of court in connection with the December 6, 1992 demolition of the disputed structure — was talking to reporters at his residence in Lucknow on Tuesday.
Singh feared that in case the verdict went against Hindus, a mass democratic movement would be launched by spiritual leaders. He said he would also participate in the stir as a Ram bhakt and not as a political leader. The former CM urged political parties to keep away from the mandir movement as it had adversely affected the cause.

European Union calls it ‘barbaric’

The European Union has condemned the death sentence by stoning for a widowed Iranian woman convicted of adultery. European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said on Tuesday in his first State of the Union address to Parliament that he is ‘appalled’ by the news of the sentencing, and called it “barbaric beyond words”.

US worried as pastor calls for Quran burning

The US authorities are acutely worried as the pastor of a Florida church has given a call for burning copies of the Quran on Saturday — the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the US.
Terry Jones, the pastor who heads the Dove World Outreach Church in Gainesville, Florida, defended his call, saying that it was high time that a “clear message” was sent to the “radical elements of Islam”.
“On September 11th, 2010, from 6pm to 9pm, we will burn the Koran on the property of Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida in remembrance of the fallen victims of 9/11 and to stand against the evil of Islam,” declared a Facebook page, titled “International Burn A Koran Day”, that boasted of more than 8,000 supporters.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will make a speech at an event this week honouring a Danish cartoonist who sparked Muslim anger by depicting Prophet Moham-med, organisers said.
The German Chancellor, 56, will make a speech on press freedom at Wedne-sday’s ceremony in Pots-dam awarding Kurt Westergaard, 75, the M100 Media Prize 2010, organisers said in a statement.
With Westergaard subject to death threats, there would be an “appropriate” security presence at the event, including body searches, police spokesman Rudi Sonntag said.

Another girls’ school destroyed in Kalam

MINGORA: Security forces on Tuesday launched a search operation after miscreants blew up a second girls’ school in Kalam late on Monday. Officials blamed suspected terrorists for torching of the school in Peshmaal. Another school had been destroyed last weekend. The terrorists had destroyed more than 402 schools in the district before they were expelled in a military operation last year. Analysts see two possible reasons behind renewed anti-school violence: first, that the terrorists are expressing their anger at the presence of Americans, who are doing relief work, in Kalam. UK to intensify relief efforts in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD/LONDON: The UK will intensify efforts this week in the critically affected south Pakistan to help avert the risk of a public health crisis.
That would include providing urgently needed clean drinking water and sanitation for hundreds of thousands of people, British International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell announced in the Parliament on Tuesday. Outlining some of the aid programme, he said the UK government would start emergency production lines in factories in Lahore and Karachi, to produce 2,155 hygiene kits per day and 5,300 water containers per day for two weeks.
Speaking in the lower House of Commons Mitchell said, “The floods in Pakistan are extraordinary and demand an extraordinary response. That is why we are taking these inventive approaches to set up an emergency production line and scouring the globe to fly in such huge quantities of urgently needed items.

Three killed in clash between tribes

QUETTA: Three people were killed in a clash between two rival tribes in the Kanak area of Mastung, around 50 kilometres from Quetta, on Tuesday.
According to official sources, the incident took place in the Killi Baqi area of Kanak when the two tribes opened fire on each other over a petty issue. As a result of the firing, three persons were killed and another suffered bullet injuries.
Levies officials along with tribal elders rushed to the spot to intervene and brought an end to the clash. The dead bodies and the injured were taken to a nearby government hospital. It was a domestic dispute and the law enforcement agencies were investigating the incident, a Levies official told Daily Times.

US, allies should contain terrorists along Pak-Afghan border: IISS

LONDON: The US-led coalition’s strategy in Afghanistan is too ambitious and instead it should counter the threat of militant attacks along the Afghan-Pakistan border, a British think tank said on Tuesday.
The call by the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) came as the public and governments in NATO countries tire of the nine-year-old war.
“For Western states to be pinned down militarily and psychologically in Afghanistan will not be in the service of their wider political and security interests,” IISS Director General John Chipman told a news conference.
The coalition’s original goal of defeating al Qaeda in Afghanistan and preventing its return had ballooned into a comprehensive strategy to develop and modernise Afghanistan, Chipman said at the launch of ‘Strategic Survey 2010’, the institute’s annual review of world affairs.

Women rights violation

ISLAMABAD: Though the federal capital have a police station for women, the federal police continue to humiliate women accused of different crimes and register cases against them with other police stations in violation of women rights.
Sources told Daily Times that such women accused were suffering due to this practice of police.
According to sources, Syed Zahid Hussain, a resident of sector E-11/3 filed an application with Shalimar Police Station that his two maids Safina Bibi and Azra Bibi stole jewellery worth of Rs 400,000 and he caught them red-handed.
Shalimar Police registered an FIR vide No 527 under section 384/411 against both the women instead of referring the case to women police station and on Tuesday both the women were sent to Adiala Jail on judicial remand.

German police raids country’s biggest neo-Nazi group

BERLIN: German police raided offices of the country’s largest neo-Nazi group on Tuesday, searching for evidence that the organisation is acting illegally against the constitution.
The interior ministry said in a statement the large-scale operation in nine states began in the early morning hours against the “Help Organisation for National Political Prisoners and their Families” (HNG), an association which supports right-wing extremists and their relatives.
Deputy Interior Minister Klaus-Dieter Fritsche called the HNG a threat to society. The liberal Free Democrats, junior partners in the centre-right government, have called for it to be banned as anti-constitutional.

‘200,000 students taking part in relief work’

KARACHI: Valuable services are being rendered by university students and employees in the province to facilitate the flood survivors, Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan said on Tuesday. He said this at the Sindh Governor’s House on the occasion of dispatching relief goods worth Rs 1.5 million generated by students for the flood affectees. Some 200,000 students are taking part in the relief work, he said. Seven trucks containing ration for 2,100 families, medicines and other goods bought from one day’s salary of private employees, and donations collected by students were sent for Thatta, Sujawal, Dadu, Johi, Khairpur, Nawabshah and Larkana, he added. Relief goods worth Rs 6 million generated by universities had already been sent from the Governor’s House, he said. Liaquat Medical University Vice-Chancellor Prof Naushad Sheikh said over 10,000 flood affectees were accommodated in relief camps near the campus.

India mulls judicial panel access to Kasab

NEW DELHI—The government seems willing to give access to a judicial commission from Pakistan to visit India and examine witnesses associated with the interrogation of Ajmal Kasab, the 26/11 terror attack convict, now in Arthur Road jail in Mumbai.
“They (Pakistan) want to examine two witnesses... A Commission is a well-known mechanism to examine witnesses,” media reports quoted a government source as saying, indicating India’s willingness to consider the proposal favourably. The government has now asked the Pakistan Interior Ministry to send a formal proposal.
Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik recently told reporters in Islamabad that he had proposed sending a judicial commission to India to quiz an Indian police official and a magistrate who had interrogated and recorded Kasab’s statement. To this, India had suggested that the witnesses can be interrogated through video conferencing. “But, they said, the laws there (in Pakistan) do not allow for examining witnesses through video conferencing,” the source said. “Then, they (Pakistan) asked if they can send a commission,” the source added.

Obama to mark September 11 at the Pentagon

WASHINGTON - US President Barack Obama will mark the ninth anniversary of the September 11 attacks at the Pentagon, and Vice President Joe Biden will be at the World Trade Center site in New York, the White House said Monday.
Officials had previously announced that First Lady Michelle Obama and former first lady Laura Bush would on Saturday mark the attacks in Pennsylvania at the site where the hijacked plane that did not reach its target crashed.
Obama also led national remembrance commemorations at the worst terror attack on US soil at the Pentagon last year, on his first September 11 as president, and called for a new national resolve in tackling Al-Qaeda.
The World Trade Center site, known as “Ground Zero,” has been at the center of a fierce political row in recent weeks, over plans to build a Muslim cultural center in the vicinity, branded by critics as grossly insensitive.

Women hopefuls face particular risks in Afghan poll

KABUL - Nima Suratgar had only just entered her name on a list of candidates for Afghanistan’s Sept. 18 parliamentary election when the first of scores of abusive and threatening emails arrived in her inbox.
Entitled “The Famous Afghan Prostitute For Parliament”, the anonymous email — which was also sent to media outlets and election officials — comprised a vicious four-page attack on Suratgar’s private life, urging voters not to support her.
This marked only the beginning of the 39-year-old Kabul teacher’s worries.
“Oh, that email, that was just the start,” said Suratgar from her modest campaign office in the Afghan capital. “I get emails and phone calls every day now from men threatening to kill me if I don’t stop running for parliament.”

Petraeus, NATO chief warn of Qur’an-burning repercussions

WASHINGTON: Fear looms over a week that should be one of celebration — the end of Ramadan, the beginning of the Jewish High Holy Days — and solemn commemoration for 9/11.
The Dove World Outreach Center, a tiny 50-member Florida church, is burning up the headlines with its plan to build a bonfire for the Holy Qur'an on Sept. 11, despite warnings from the US commander in Afghanistan, Gen. David Petraeus, that he is "very concerned" about potential repercussions that could endanger troops and “the overall effort in Afghanistan." He said this in a statement around midnight Monday.
With about 120,000 US and NATO-led troops still battling Al-Qaeda and the Taleban, Petraeus warned: "This is precisely the kind of action the Taleban uses and could cause significant problems. Not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community."

‘Lead exemplary lives by following Holy Book’

JEDDAH: Sheikh Tawfik Assayegh, imam of Allami Mosque in Jeddah, has called upon Muslims to set a good example in their lives by following the teachings of the Holy Qur’an.
Assayegh, whose melodious Qur’an recitation attracts thousands to his mosque for Taraweeh and Qiyamullail prayers, urged Muslims to return to the Qur’an and Sunnah in order to strengthen their unity.
He said the Qur’an was full of miracles that could not be counted. “It’s an endless blessing. A person will receive immense satisfaction and enjoyment from reading the Holy Book.”
Sheikh Assayegh said a number of cancer patients had achieved recovery after he recited the Qur’an on them. “The Qur’an’s healing effect is marvelous,” he pointed out. Assayegh also spoke about Lailat Al-Qadr (the Night of Power), when the first verses of the Qur’an were revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). “It is a gift from God to Muslims,” he said.
According to the Qur’an, Lailat Al-Qadr is better than a thousand months. “This means a person who engages in worship and other righteous deeds during this night would get the reward of doing such deeds over 83 years,” he explained.

Imam behind NYC mosque back in US after Gulf trip

NEW YORK: An imam who has become the public face of a proposed Islamic community center and mosque near ground zero has returned to the United States following a State Department-funded tour of the Middle East, his wife said Tuesday.
Daisy Khan said her husband, Feisal Abdul Rauf, planned to comment later this week on plans for a $100 million center that have led to an increasingly vitriolic national debate over religious freedom and the sensitivities of Sept. 11 families. She said they would have no further comments until then.
Khan, who has been a supporter of the project and leads a Muslim nonprofit organization with her husband, said Rauf returned Sunday from a 15-day trip to promote religious tolerance in the Gulf. The trip, paid for by the US Department of State, began Aug. 19 in Bahrain and included visits to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
In Rauf’s last scheduled public appearance in Dubai on Aug. 31, he said the debate is over more than “a piece of real estate.” It had, he said, “expanded to Islam in America and what it means for America.”

Weddings in the month of fasting — to be or not to be

ABHA: Is it permissible to hold marriage ceremonies or wedding parties in pomp and pleasure during the holy month of Ramadan?
There has been a mixed response from a number of Saudi men and women, especially from religious figures, on the issue. Some argue vehemently in favor of it while others say an emphatic no.
Those who support it see something blissful in holding the most auspicious occasion in anyone’s life during the most blessed month of the year.
On the other hand, those who oppose it say that there is an increased chance of violating the sanctity of the holy month, as well as an elevated risk of committing sins through the mixing of unrelated men and women at wedding parties and the new couple missing the point of what it means to fast, according to a report carried by Al-Watan Arabic daily.
Rajaa Ismail, a Saudi woman, says that there is nothing wrong with holding wedding parties in the nights of the holy month.
