Imams ready peace sermon for Ayodhya verdict

MUMBAI: With the Allahabad high court verdict on Ayodhya title suit coming on September 24, a Friday, imams of different mosques in the city are being roped in to appeal to the Muslims to maintain peace.
Over 50 clerics and imams met at Jamia Ashrafia Qadriya, a Sunni madrassa on Grant Road on Tuesday, to discuss the possible ramifications of the verdict. ''We can't allow the communal forces to vitiate the atmosphere. Peace is the need of the hour and imams will call upon the masses from the pulpit of the mosques to abide by the court verdict,'' said Maulana Syed Moinuddin Ashraf, president, Jamia Ashrafia Qadriya.
''Some leaders can jeopardise peace and harmony with their vitriolic speeches after the judgement. They should be arrested as a preventive measure,'' said Ashraf.
But the clerics reiterated that Muslims' claim over the disputed site in Ayodhya where the Babri mosque stood till December 6, 1992, was non-negotiable.
Several other non-political fronts and NGOs run by Muslims have joined the clerics and imams and appealed to the people to maintain peace.

Three drone strikes kill 28 in Waziristan

LAHORE: At least 28 people were killed in three US led drone strikes in the remote areas of South and North Waziristan, a private TV channel reported on Tuesday.
According to sources, the first drone attack was occurred in Miranshah, where the drone aircraft pounded two missiles, killing at least nine people. In the second attack, the US led drone targeted Azam Warsak, some 25 kilometers west of Wana, the main town of South Waziristan tribal district, in which at least 12 people were killed.
The US drone fired five missiles at the office of Shamsullah, a commander of militant group, Maulvi Nazir Ahmed. Four US led drones continued to hover over the area after the attack, which caused great panic among the locals. Whereas, about seven people were killed in where the air strike targeted a vehicle in Bundh.

‘Inter-faith harmony, democracy vital to tackle militancy’

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has stated that democracy and promoting inter-faith harmony were vital to tackle the menace of militancy and extremism in achieving peace and progress.
“A great challenge to peace and stability comes from intolerance to opposing views. Whether it is militancy, extremism or sectarianism, its roots lie in intolerance”.
“One effective response to this challenge lies in democracy that believes in unity in diversity and in tolerance towards dissent. Another effective response lies in promoting interfaith harmony,” the president said in his message on the occasion of World Peace Day, observed every year on September 21.
He said, “We are confronted with formidable challenges in the form of militancy and extremist mindset. The militants and their supporters want to derail the peace process. We will not let that happen.”
“Only democracy can deliver in realising the aspirations of our people for peace, progress and prosperity. It is the people, and the people alone, who can decide about the future of South Asia,” he added.
“We are willing to go an extra mile to resolve all our issues through dialogue. We must understand that an enduring peace demands that South Asia move forward with the support and blessings of the true representatives of the people. On this day we must reiterate our commitment to global peace and understand that democracy is the only sure way to deliver peace and stability and dispel the dark clouds that have cast a shadow on our region,” he added.

PESHAWAR: Security forces kill at least 30 militants

PESHAWAR: At least 30 militants and three policemen were killed in a “search operation” in a semi-tribal area of northwest Pakistan, police said Tuesday.
The casualties occurred during a joint army, paramilitary and police operation against militants who were attacking local peace committee members and were involved in kidnap-for-ransom.
Peace committees are groups of local volunteers who help authorities battle militants and criminal gangs.
“Since Saturday night at least 30 militants have been killed in three towns of Paspanwa, Hasankhel and Bora,” Peshawar police chief Liaqat Ali Khan told AFP.
“Three policemen were martyred and five troops were injured in the gunfights,” Khan said.
“The operation is still continuing and we have cleared the town of Paspanwa which was their main stronghold”, he said adding that a large number of weapons were also seized.
Paspanwa is some 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of Peshawar.
A senior military official in Peshawar confirmed the deaths saying they took place when militants put up “resistance” during a “search operation.”

NEW DELHI: Salim Ahmed, the rickshawpuller who dared to challenge the attackers when they shot at and injured Taiwanese nationals near Jama Masjid gate number 3 on Sunday, has finally found something to be cheerful about. Almost two days after the incident of firing near Jama Masjid, commissioner of police, Y S Dadwal, has announced a reward of Rs 25,000 for Salim.
Salim (26), whose wife is not in good health, humbly proclaimed that he would use the money for his wife Shabana's treatment. Shabana has been suffering from tuberculosis since the past five years. TOI had reported in its Tuesday edition what prompted this Kalyanpuri resident to emerge as a hero on Sunday.
A couple of hours after police announced the reward, Salim said not a single police officer had contacted him.

Bomb Explodes at Parade in Iran

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- A bomb exploded at a military parade in northwestern Iran on Wednesday, killing 10 spectators in an attack that one official blamed on Kurdish separatists who have fought Iranian forces for decades.
The blast in the city of Mahabad, close to the borders with Iraq and Turkey, also injured 57 people, Iranian media reports said. Most of the victims were women and children, said provincial Governor Vahid Jalalzadeh, who was quoted in a report by Iran's state broadcasting company.
Iranian forces in the border zone have for years clashed with Kurdish rebels from the Iranian wing of the Kurdistan Workers Party, which also has fighters based in Turkey and Iraq. The group in Iran has generally not targeted civilians in its campaign for greater rights for the Kurdish minority, raising the prospect that the bomb might have gone off prematurely.

Radical Islam challenges Central Asian leaders

TURSUNZODA, Tajikistan: Shoira Shatmanova says her 21-year-old son is embarrassed to be seen in public with her because she doesn't wear an Islamic headscarf.
Born and raised when Tajikistan was part of the Soviet Union, she feels increasingly like an outsider in her own land.
Her fear, like that of many in Tajikistan, is that a more radical interpretation of Islam in the Central Asian republic of 7.5 million people could prove fertile ground for homegrown militants filtering back across the border from Afghanistan.
“I'm not in any way opposed to women wearing the hijab,” said Shatmanova, a 53-year-old nurse. “I will only oppose it when these women and their husbands are against people like me – and this is already happening.”
Chronic poverty and a Soviet-style crackdown on religion is furthering the growth of radical Islam in parts of Central Asia, a secular but mainly Muslim region wedged between Russia, Iran, Afghanistan and China.

Woodward Book Says Afghanistan Divided White House

WASHINGTON — Some of the critical players in President Obama’s national security team doubt his strategy in Afghanistan will succeed and have spent much of the last 20 months quarreling with one another over policy, personalities and turf, according to a new book.
The book, “Obama’s Wars,” by the journalist Bob Woodward, depicts an administration deeply torn over the war in Afghanistan even as the president agreed to triple troop levels there amid suspicion that he was being boxed in by the military. Mr. Obama’s top White House adviser on Afghanistan and his special envoy for the region are described as believing the strategy will not work.
The president concluded from the start that “I have two years with the public on this” and pressed advisers for ways to avoid a big escalation, the book says. “I want an exit strategy,” he implored at one meeting. Privately, he told Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. to push his alternative strategy opposing a big troop buildup in meetings, and while Mr. Obama ultimately rejected it, he set a withdrawal timetable because, “I can’t lose the whole Democratic Party.”

Al Jazeera reports that tight trousers are off limits to women in West Aceh, Indonesia. The sharia police stop women who break the dress code, forcing them to wear a long skirt handed out by the government.
Ramli Mansur, District Chief, says that if a woman wears jeans, she will be showing parts of her body that are supposed to be covered according to Islam.
The policy is supposed to enforce Sharia law in Aceh but critics say it distracts attention from economic problems in the region which is still recovering from the 2004 tsunami.
Many women are ignoring the regulations, saying the government should do more than control their clothing.

SC saves Centre of Haj embarrassment, clears flight of 45,000 pilgrims

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday saved the ministry of external affairs a major embarrassment by removing the roadblock put by Kerala High Court on the travel of 45,491 Haj pilgrims to Saudi Arabia next month through private tour operators.
As per this year's quota under the Bilateral Haj Agreement between India and Saudi Arabia, 160,491 Haj pilgrims were to go for the holy trip -- 115,000 through Haj Committee of India and 45,491 through private operators.
Within a week of the HC faulting the government's policy because it did not allow any new private operator to participate in the ferrying of pilgrims to Saudi Arabia, a beleaguered Centre rushed to the SC through advocate Harish Beeran saying this would jeopardise the entire Haj operations, hints of which had already been put on record by Saudi authorities.

Jamiat, VHP seek peace

The Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) have, in separate appeals, called for peace regardless of the nature of the September 24 verdict in the Ayodhya dispute. They also added that issues could be resolved through mutual discussions and law of the land.
The Jamiat on Tuesday said a mutual consensus could be reached between the two communities to resolve the sensitive issue of Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute if an environment of peace, love and respect for the law of the land gets created.
“Those who razed down the disputed structure at Ayodhya should publicly declare that the act was illegal and wrong and that they have respect for the rule of law, “senior Jamiat leader Niaz Ahmed Farooqui told The Pioneer on Tuesday.

Pak spy who was in city for a year held with Army papers

New Delhi: A suspected Pakistani spy,who has been staying in the capital since the past one year to conduct recce of Army installations,was arrested days before the Jama Masjid firing incident.Police,however,claimed that the alleged spy had no information about the attack on foreigners on Sunday allegedly by Indian Mujahideen.
Police claimed to have seized confidential documents related to the Indian Army from the accuseds possession.Three others who provided him with logistic support are being questioned and are likely to be arrested soon,police said.
The accused,identified as Sajjad Haider (43) and hails from Lahore,was nabbed by a team of Delhi Polices special cell from Samalkha village near IGI Airport on September 14 following a tip-off from central intelligence agencies.Haider was staying in the capital under the assumed name of Mohd Pervez and even had a fake passport in that name.

Pakistan has no locus standi in J&K: India

NEW DELHI: Reacting to reports of resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir having been passed by Pakistan's National Assembly and the Senate, India on Tuesday said such motions had no locus standi in its “purely internal affair.”
It said Pakistan should instead tackle the issues of constitutional safeguards, democracy, extremism, terrorism and human rights violations in the part of Jammu and Kashmir that was under its “illegal occupation.”
“In the spirit of true rationality, India desires good neighbourly relations with Pakistan. We are committed to resolving all outstanding issues through dialogue. Crucially, Pakistan must fulfil its stated commitment of not allowing territory under its control to be used for terrorism directed against India in any manner,” a Foreign Office statement said on a day when the all-party delegation from Delhi wound up its visit to Jammu and Kashmir.

Hillary Clinton pushes Sudan on referendum

NEW YORK: Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is urging Sudanese authorities to make up for lost time in preparing for an independence referendum early next year for the Southern Sudan.
On the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York, Clinton met Tuesday with Sudan's Vice President Ali Osman Taha to impress upon him the need for a well-organized and peaceful vote in January. With just over 100 days until the referendum, preparations are far behind schedule.
There are also fears that a vote splitting the south and north will re-ignite a bloody civil war that ended in 2005.
U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday appointed a panel to monitor the upcoming vote, said his spokesman Martin Nesirky. Former Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa will head the panel that also includes former Portuguese Foreign Minister Antonio Monteiro, and Nepal's former elections commission chairman Bhojraj Pokharel.

Algerian girl buried in Makkah

MAKKAH: The body of the 14-year-old Algerian girl Sarah Al-Khateeb, who died last week after falling from a Makkah hotel, was buried at Sheraie Graveyard following a funeral prayer at the Grand Mosque.
The funeral was attended by the Algerian consulate general officials, the girl's stepfather and a large number of worshippers. The burial comes after a post mortem report showed that the girl was not raped.
The post-mortem result refutes reports carried by some local Arabic newspapers that the girl was gang raped before falling from the 16th floor of the hotel where she was staying - Dar Al-Muhajireen in the city's Gaza district - on to the roof of an adjacent building.
News of the girl's death immediately sparked angry protests by Algerian Muslim pilgrims who shut down the main road near the hotel and demanded to see the Algerian ambassador.

Women prisoners riot in Makkah

MAKKAH: Police had to intervene Tuesday to quell clashes between two groups of inmates at the Girls' Correction Center in the Umrah district of Makkah after women prison officials failed to control the violence.
A security source told Arab News that an altercation between two groups of inmates started at 9 a.m. as they watched television. One group demanded that the sound volume be reduced.
"When the verbal exchange between the inmates developed into a fistfight, women officials at the facility called police to quell the fighting," the source said.
A team of officers comprising patrol police, criminal investigators and security police rushed to the center soon after receiving information about the incident. Security agents questioned the girls to learn the reasons behind the fighting.

Karzai olive branch for Taliban on UN Peace Day

KABUL: Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Tuesday marked the UN’s International Peace Day with a renewed call to Taliban-led insurgents to lay down their arms and reconcile with his administration.
“I call on those who have picked up arms against Afghanistan and peace in this country, to take advantage of Peace Day and join peace talks through the High Council for Peace and stop fratricide,” Karzai said in a statement. Karzai earlier this month established a High Council for Peace tasked with efforts to cut a peace deal with the Taliban and other Islamist rebels fighting his US-backed government.

Fauzia criticises Punjab for ‘facilitating’ JuD

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Information Secretay Fauzia Wahab on Tuesday criticised the Punjab government for allegedly facilitating and supporting the banned Jamaatud Dawa (JuD).
Speaking on a point of order in the National Assembly, she said that the government of Pakistan had banned JuD following the United Nations blacklist, but she deplored that the proscribed outfit was still active in Punjab with the alleged support of the provincial government.
“The provincial government is not only supporting the banned outfit but also facilitating it,” she said, adding that the organisation had also lead a procession in Punjab and had published advertisements as well.

Pakistan floods hit militant fight: Holbrooke

NEW YORK: Pakistan’s fight against militants has been constrained by the need to deploy troops to help victims of recent devastating floods, the senior US official for Pakistan and Afghanistan said on Tuesday.
Ambassador Richard Holbrooke said there was no evidence yet that Islamabad was acting on Washington's demands that it move against the Haqqani group, a Taliban ally which US officials suspect has ties to Pakistani intelligence, and suggested this was because of the country's devastating floods.
“They have tens of thousands of troops on flood duty. The army has really been the major factor in the rescue effort, and you can't do both things at once,” said Holbrooke, who spoke in New York as part of a Reuters Washington Summit.
He dismissed suggestions, however, that the Pakistani government's halting response to the flood disaster was creating instability in the country.

Next 10 days decisive for Mideast peace talks: Palestinians

UNITED NATIONS: The next 10 days will be key for the future of the Middle East peace talks, a Palestinian spokesman told on Tuesday as negotiators sought ways to end a standoff over Jewish settlements.
"The next 10 days will be decisive and determine the fate of the direct negotiations with Israel," Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas's spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina said.
"There is a very large international effort made to overcome the obstacles in the way of direct negotiations. In particular, the obstacle of the settlements," he said.
The dispute over the settlements has threatened to undermine the fledgling efforts by the United States to revive the Middle East peace talks after their official launch in Washington last month following a nearly two-year hiatus.
The Palestinians have repeatedly demanded that Israel extend a 10-month freeze on settlement construction in the occupied West Bank which expires this weekend in order for the talks to continue.

Mobile numbers may lead Maha ATS to IM sleeper cell

Mumbai: The cyber cells of the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad and the Mumbai Crime Branch have found two Tata Docomo mobile numbers,which they believe could lead them to the sleeper cell of the Indian Mujahideen (IM) that was behind Sundays firing at Jama Masjid in Delhi.Two Taiwanese tourists were injured in the shooting.
The SIM cards for the numbers,one of which was used to send Sundays terror email,were purchased in Borivli and the Internet Protocol (IP) address used to send the email has been also traced to Borivli.Following the firing,an email was received by media outlets,in which the IM claimed responsibility for the attack.
The dealer who sold the SIM cards reportedly told the police that he had no recollection of the buyer.Sources said a single person bought both SIM cards,one in the name of Pradnya Shetty of Malad and the other in the name of Parva Shinde of Borivli.The dealer was furnished a bogus drivers licence and a PAN card obtained through fake documents to get the cards.

Mosque ally's vid shows 'Hez' true colors

Among the Islamic clerics defending plans for a mosque near Ground Zero yesterday was an outspoken critic of Israel who enthusiastically signaled his support for terror groups Hamas and Hezbollah during a rally a decade ago.
At a news conference outside the site of the proposed mosque, Imam Mahdi Bray, executive director of the Washington-based Muslim American Society, was adamant about Muslims' right to build a mosque where they choose.
But he refused to discuss a video, from a rally in Lafayette Park in Washington, DC, that shows him onstage repeatedly raising his arms when an unidentified speaker asked how many in the crowd supported Hamas and Hezbollah.

Members of a Southwest County group opposed to plans for a mosque in Temecula explained why they have concerns about the project during a lecture Monday night in Temecula's community recreation center.

Today, last bid to defer Ayodhya verdict

NEW DELHI: Just ahead of the Allahabad high court's verdict on the title suit claiming ownership over the disputed site in Ayodhya, a last-ditch attempt is being made to defer the decision on the communally sensitive issue and get more time for a negotiated settlement.
A petition to this effect is being prepared and is likely to be filed in the Supreme Court on Wednesday by one Ramesh Chandra Tripathi, whose plea for deferment of the September 24 judgment on title suits was rejected by the Allahabad HC. A three-judge bench of the HC had also saddled him with a cost of Rs 50,000.
However, what made him approach the SC was the order of one of the judges of the bench who, while claiming to have not been consulted by the other two judges, had said that the space for negotiated settlement remained unaltered ahead of the verdict on September 24.

In a first, Deoband to discuss Valley unrest

NEW DELHI: The Deoband seminary, which has stayed out of Kashmir politics, will host a gathering of Muslim clerics and scholars on October 4 to discuss Kashmir in the backdrop of renewed violence in the Valley. The conference is an initiative by the Jamiat-Ulama-i-Hind (JuH), first-of-its-kind by a Muslim religious organization in the country, said the group's leader Maulana Mahmood Madani.
"The ulema will meet to evolve a peaceful and unanimous civilian response to the Kashmir crisis," he said.
But dragging Deoband into Kashmir wasn't being welcomed. "It could create a perception that Kashmir is a religious issue," said Arshad Alam, assistant professor, Jamia Millia Islamia University. He feared it could create a wedge between communities. "A message could go out that Kashmiris are facing repression because they are Muslims. It could foist a monolithic identity on a heterogenous Muslim community," he said. Sociologist Imtiaz Ahmad said, "A religious initiative on Kashmir issue is not desirable."

'No need to celebrate or protest'

NEW DELHI/LUCKNOW: A group of Muslim activists and opinion-makers have appealed to the masses to neither celebrate nor protest in the wake of the September 24 court judgment on the status of the controversial Ayodhya site and called for restraint.
The meeting, convened by Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind on Sunday, urged people on either side of the dispute not to indulge in provocative acts and refrain from emotional outbursts following the Allahabad high court's verdict on the title suits.
Among those who attended the meeting were Rajya Sabha deputy chairman K Rahman Khan, Jamiat leader Maulana Mahmood Madani and Muslim Personal Law Board member Kamal Farooqi. ''We have decided to accept the final verdict of the Supreme Court,'' Farooqi said, claiming that the Muslim groups were ready to go by the judicial decision.

India rejects Pak resolutions on J&K

NEW DELHI: The war of words between India and Pakistan over the situation in J&K intensified further on Tuesday with New Delhi rejecting "resolutions" passed by Pakistan's National Assembly and Senate condemning what it described as Indian brutality and human rights violations in J&K and pledging moral, political and diplomatic support for the "people's movement".
"We have seen reports of resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir that have been passed in the National Assembly and the Senate of Pakistan. We reject these resolutions. They have no locus standi on what is purely an internal affair of India," foreign ministry spokesperson Vishnu Prakash said.
Not holding back, India also called upon Pakistan to tackle the issues of "constitutional safeguards, democracy, extremism, terrorism and human rights violations in the part of Jammu & Kashmir under its illegal occupation".

Meeting Kashmir separatists not a good idea, says BJP

SRINAGAR: Indicating her reservations at some members of the all-party delegation meeting separatists, senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday said this was not part of the team's "mandate" and suggested the decision was not a collective one.
"That was their own decision, not that of the delegation. If some want to go, how can we stop them? They went but our decision was not to go. So we didn't go," Sushma said.
Sushma made these remarks when asked by newsmen for her response to discussions three groups from the all-party team had with the separatist leaders after some members went out of their way visiting their homes yesterday.
Three teams of the delegation met Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, leaders of the hardline and moderate Hurriyat groups respectively at their homes and JKLF chief Yasin Malik at his office in full media glare.

Ahmadinejad says capitalism faces defeat

UNITED NATIONS: Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared Tuesday that capitalism faces inevitable defeat and called for the overhaul of "undemocratic and unjust" global decision-making bodies.
In a speech on the second day of a UN anti-poverty summit, the Iranian leader blamed capitalism and transnational corporations for "the suffering of countless women, men and children in so many countries."
Ahmadinejad's speech to the 192-member General Assembly never mentioned the Millennium Development Goals — the UN targets set by world leaders in 2000 to combat global poverty by 2015 — that are the focus of the three-day summit called by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to spur their implementation.

Moore raises $60,000 for Muslim community center

WASHINGTON: Just when one thought the controversy over the construction of a Muslim community center in New York had died down, documentary filmmaker Michael Moore announced that he has raised over $60,000 for its construction.
On the other side are unconfirmed rumors that some NY construction workers may refuse to work on the proposed community center.
Never one to shy away from controversy, Michael Moore has jumped into fundraising for the Muslim community center which has inflamed passions and protests on opposite ends of the globe, mainly in the Middle East and at the proposed site in New York.
Moore made an appeal to his supporters on the ninth anniversary of 9/11 for donations to the construction project, pledging to match contributions up to $10,000.

Yemen sees WTO accession deal this year

GENEVA: Yemen hopes to conclude its 11-year-old bid to join the World Trade Organization this year, enabling the impoverished Arab state to accede in 2011, a senior Yemeni trade official said on Tuesday.
Membership of the body that umpires world trade would boost its economy and provide access to technical assistance from the WTO and its 153 members, said Farouk Kassem, director-general for marketing and trade in the ministry of agriculture.
"For Yemen there was big progress," he told Reuters after a meeting of a working party on accession. Asked when the talks would be completed, he said: "By the end of the year, hopefully."
As a least developed country (LDC), Yemen can potentially benefit from a fast-track accession process. The German diplomat chairing the negotiations, Hartmut Roben, told the meeting he was encouraged by Yemen's efforts.

US Muslims ask Iran to free remaining hikers

WASHINGTON: A number of local and national Muslim organizations on Tuesday delivered a joint letter to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during a meeting in New York City calling for the release of Shane Bauer and Joshua Fattal, the two remaining American hikers detained in Iran.
The joint letter, drafted by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and signed by seven other Muslim organizations, first thanked the Iranian president for the recent release of hiker Sarah Shourd. It went on to state: “We believe her release will help improve relations between our two nations and hope similar actions can be taken in the cases of Shane Bauer and Joshua Fattal.

Human rights failures damage fight against poverty

LONDON — Amnesty International on Wednesday accused world leaders at a UN summit of damaging the fight against global poverty through their failure to combat human rights violations.
A greater focus on rights would boost efforts to reach a set of key United Nations development goals, which are under the spotlight at the New York summit, said the London-based group.
“It is completely unacceptable that world leaders have still not agreed to take concrete action to address discrimination and other human rights violations,” said Amnesty’s Secretary General, Salil Shetty.
Such violations “prevent the MDGs (Millennium Development Goals) from benefiting those who need them most,” he added.

Bahrain invites cleric to apply for nationality

MANAMA — Bahrain has invited an Iranian-rooted cleric to apply for Bahraini citizenship, one day after revoking his and his family’s nationality.
The Bahraini passports of Hussain Mirza Abdulbaki Mohammed Al Razzaq, also known as Najati, his wife and three children were withdrawn on Sunday. The action was announced by Undersecretary for Nationality, Passports and Residence Shaikh Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, citing illegality in obtaining their Bahraini passports.
In a fresh move, the General Directorate of Nationally, Passport and Residence highlighted in a statement that Najati and his family members did not get Bahraini nationality in the first place due to an administrative error and incomplete legal procedures. The department called upon Najati if he is interested in getting Bahraini passports he needs to apply for citizenship which will be processed in line with legal procedures.
Najati, who has close relations with Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Al Husayni Al Sistani, is among many others who have been naturalised after political reforms in 2002.

Two women register for Bahrain’s?civic polls

Eighty-three candidates, including two women, filed their papers for Bahrain’s municipal election on Monday, the first day of a five-day registration period.
Fatima Salman and Subah Al Dossary will be contesting for separate constituencies in the same district of Muharraq. No other woman has so far registered in the rest of four governorates
In the last municipal election in 2006, five women, out of a total 171 candidates, took part in the race. However, none of them won. Salman and Subah had also contest the last elections.
Fatima Salman is optimistic that this time women would be able to turn the corner. Talking to media she said she did not agree with the perception that because of their soft nature women could not cope with tough municipal responsibilities.

WASHINGTON: Members of President Barack Obama's national security team have waged an internal battle over Afghan policy that has been marked by bitter infighting, according to a new book by journalist Bob Woodward.
Although many of internal divisions described are now public knowledge the book, "Obama's Wars," offers new details and suggests the disagreements were more intense than previously known, The New York Times reported on Tuesday.
The newspaper obtained a copy of the book in advance of its scheduled release next Monday. The book depicts an administration deeply torn over the war in Afghanistan, with the some of president's chief advisers doubtful his new strategy will work and quarreling with each other for much of the past 20 months, the newspaper said.

Europe votes in law to send back illegal Afghans, Pakistanis

STRASBOURG: Europe voted today a controversial deal to send back thousands of illegal Afghan and Pakistani immigrants.
The "re-admission agreement" passed by the European parliament after years of negotiations with Islamabad is intended to ensure such returns meet international rules on human rights protections.
About 13,000 Pakistani nationals were picked up in Europe in 2008 without correct paperwork, according to the Strasbourg-based parliament.
It did not have figures for Afghan immigrants in a similar situation, who invariably pass through Pakistan.
The European Union, which has brokered 11 such deals with other countries, sees this agreement as a means to undermine people smuggling networks.

Three police killed days after Indonesian terror raids

JAKARTA, Indonesia: Heavily armed gunmen killed three police officers in western Indonesia early Wednesday, officials said, just days after security forces made multiple arrests and killed suspects in anti-terrorism raids.
Brig. Gen. Ketut Untung Yoga, the deputy national police spokesman, said the assailants arrived by motorcycle in the middle of the night and stormed a village police precinct in Deli Serdang, a district in North Sumatra province.
They shot three officers with automatic weapons and fled. The precinct itself was badly damaged with shattered glass everywhere. Two police cars also were torched.
"Members of the group were wearing masks and helmets,'' he said. ``We're still investigating. ... We don't have a motive yet."

TANGMARG (KASHMIR): Home minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday faced some tough questions from Kashmiri youths who asked him whether he felt no pain when security forces fired on peaceful protesters and told him that unemployment was the major reason for unrest in the state.
During the interaction a young man asked the home minister why even peaceful protesters were fired upon. "When you fire on us, don't you feel the pain? When you cut us, when you fire on Kashmiris?" he asked.

TANGMARG (J&K): Kashmiris on Tuesday made an impassioned appeal to put an immediate end to bloodshed in the Valley and sought concrete steps to resolve the Kashmir issue. They were interacting with an all-party delegation headed by Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram.
Most of the delegation members visited the picturesque Tangmarg resort to see the destruction caused by a mob on September 12. Six civilians were killed in police firing and several others injured in its aftermath. They listened to a gathering arranged by local MLA and Agriculture Minister G.H. Mir. This was the only direct contact the delegation had with the common people.
Some people spoke about corruption, unemployment and lack of infrastructure development, but the dominant view was that it was time to resolve the Kashmir issue, “which can only come through better ties between India and Pakistan and initiating a dialogue.” “Feel our pain” was their refrain.

All-party delegation meets Pandits, Shabir Shah

SRINAGAR: The 39-member all-party delegation on Tuesday reached Jammu and held discussions with political parties, NGOs and civil society. Some members visited the Kashmiri Pandit migrant camps, while a few met the detained separatist leader Shabir Shah.
However, the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party and the Samajwadi Party boycotted the delegation. The BJP withdrew its decision to boycott the delegation after its demands were met.
It was a replay of Srinagar as the delegates met the National Conference, the People's Democratic Party, the Congress, the BJP and other groups. They echoed the same views expressed by their counterparts in Srinagar on Monday. Senior Congress leader Mangat Ram Sharma, however, strongly opposed the demand of greater autonomy — the stand not espoused by the Congress here. “Whatever autonomy we have is enough,” he said.

UN chief appeals for restraint in Kashmir Valley

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called for an immediate end to violence in Kashmir and appealed for restraint by all parties, his spokesperson said on Wednesday.
"The Secretary-General regrets the latest loss of life. He (Ban) calls for an immediate end to violence and urges calm and restraint by all concerned," Martin Nesirky told journalists, adding that Ban was "closely following events".
The Kashmir Valley remains under a relaxed curfew after months of persistent clashes between demonstrators and security personnel, which have claimed more than 100 lives.
The statement comes almost a month after UN sent out an email, which said that Ban called on "all concerned to exercise utmost restraint and address problems peacefully" and he "encourages both sides to rekindle the spirit of the composite dialogue".

‘Kashmiris must be allowed to demonstrate peacefully’

THE government should issue a firm order to stop ongoing killings and restore peace in restive Kashmir, felt former foreign secretary and Kashmiri analyst Maharaja Krishna Rasgotra.
He also said the ‘ trigger happy’ Central Reserve Police Force ( CRPF) has no role to play in the Valley.
Jammu and Kashmir has been on the boil in recent times and since June 11, more than 100 demonstrators have been killed in firing by security forces prompting an all- party delegation, led by home minister P. Chidambaram, to head to the Valley to resolve the crisis.
Rasgotra, however, felt the authorities have been ignoring one fundamental fact — that the youngsters who are demonstrating are unarmed.

US urges Iran to return to nuclear talks

US officials urged Iran on Tuesday to return to negotiations over its nuclear programme. Talks reached a stalemate months ago, after Iran tried to re-negotiate an agreement for it to ship out most of its low enriched uranium to be turned into fuel for a research reactor. Iran says it's enriching to produce energy, but the US and other countries fear the country could use the process to make weapons.
Washington is “always interested in re-engaging Iran” on the fuel swap but wants to make sure Iran is sincere, US Energy Secretary Steven Chu said.
US Deputy Energy Secretary Daniel Poneman, speaking to reporters alongside Chu, said it was important to focus on larger talks between Iran and the five UN Security Council members plus Germany, not just on the narrower talks on the proposed fuel swap.

Iran’s paramilitary force gets new missile

Iran's Defence Minister says the country's powerful Revolutionary Guard has received its first batch of new missiles with enhanced guidance systems to hit ground targets. Gen Ahmad Vahidi says the Defense Ministry supplied the Guard with the upgraded surface-to-surface Fateh-110 missile, which was successfully test-fired last month. The weapon was developed by Iran's Aerospace Industries Organisation. Iran has been pushing to upgrade its missile arsenal, which is already capable of hitting Israel and other parts of the region. Vahidi says Iran will further develop the Fateh-110. He gave no details of the missile's capabilities but earlier versions had ranges of up to 193 km.

‘India concerned over nuke proliferation in neighbourhood’

Amid reports of Sino-Pak plans to set up a new giant atomic power plant in Pakistan, India has said it has been affected by clandestine nuclear proliferation in its neighbourhood and is concerned about the possibility of atomic terrorism in the region.
“We believe that the challenges of nuclear terrorism and nuclear security have to be addressed. We have been affected by clandestine nuclear proliferation in our neighbourhood. We are naturally concerned about the possibility of nuclear terrorism given the security situation in our neighbourhood,” Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao said while delivering a lecture at the Harvard University on Monday.
India has, therefore, taken the lead at the UN General Assembly on an effective law-based international response, including on WMD terrorism, she noted.
“India has joined the Russia-US led Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism. The first Nuclear Security Summit hosted by President Obama in April 2010 was an important milestone in our efforts,” Rao said.

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly passed on Tuesday The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Child Protection and Welfare Bill 2010 aimed at providing care, protection, maintenance, welfare, training, education, rehabilitation and reintegration to children at risk in the province.
A child, who has not attained the age of 18, at risk means an orphan, child with disabilities, child of migrant workers, child working or living on the street, child in conflict with the law and a child living in extreme poverty who is found begging.
Mufti Kifayatullah, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), proposed amendment to the Bill, arguing the Act may be called the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tahafuz wa Rifah Atfal Act 2010, while Dr Iqbal Din, member JUI-F, proposed the age limit should be 15 years instead of 18, which were both defeated in the House.

Greece grapples with asylum humanitarian crisis: UNHCR

GENEVA: The UN refugee agency warned on Tuesday that Greece faces a ‘humanitarian crisis’ with thousands of asylum seekers living in the rough and urged the EU to do more to help its cash-strapped member state.
The office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees called on Greece to accelerate planned asylum reforms, highlighting a “continued absence of a functioning asylum system”, that has left many would-be refugees on the streets.
But the agency acknowledged that it was also up to the European Union to help solve the issue, as Greece shouldered the burden of dealing with those arriving on its territory under EU rules, mainly from Afghanistan, Iraq and Somalia.
There were 16,000 new asylum applications in the southeast European state in 2009, while the country has just 865 reception places for asylum seekers, according to the UNHCR.

Yemeni officials deny reports cleric surrounded

SAN’A — The Yemeni army destroyed five homes suspected of hiding al-Qaida militants on Tuesday as a siege of a southern village entered its second day, but officials denied reports that US-born radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki was among those surrounded.
Government forces have moved into the village of Hawta with tanks and armored vehicles and thousands of people have fled the area to escape the fighting, which officials say is targeting a 120-man militant cell.
Troops also fired on vehicles of residents fleeing the village and another nearby trouble spot, the city of Lawder, killing two civilians and wounding three others, according local government and medical officials.
Security officials said the homes that were destroyed were empty. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak to the media.
