LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) -- Three bombs ripped through a Shiite Muslim religious procession in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore on Wednesday, killing at least 30 people and wounding 210 others, officials said.
The explosions appeared to be the latest in a string of attacks by Sunni extremists against the minority Shiites they consider infidels. Allied with al-Qaida and the Taliban, the bombers are also seeking to destabilize Pakistan's U.S.-backed government.
The blasts were the first major attacks since Pakistan was hit by devastating floods more than a month ago. Lahore, the country's political capital and home to much of its military elite, has been regularly targeted by militants over the past two years.
The bombs exploded at three separate sites Wednesday evening as 35,000 Shiites marched through the streets of Lahore in their traditional mourning procession for the caliph Ali, one of Shiite Islam's most respected holy men.
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani condemned the blasts in a statement and said the attackers would not escape justice.
After the blasts, the marchers erupted in fury, setting fire to a police station, another police facility, two police cars and three motorcycles, said Zulfiqar Hameed, a senior police officer. Police lobbed tear gas canisters at the crowd and fired shots in the air to disperse the assailants, he said.
The first blast was a time bomb that exploded in the street near a well-known Shiite building, Hameed said. Footage of that explosion shown on Geo television showed a small blast erupting amid a crowd of people on the street followed by a large plume of smoke. Hundreds of people fled from the blast, while others rushed to the area to carry the wounded to safety.
Abbas Kumaili, a prominent Shiite scholar as well as a senator, called for three days of mourning over the attack and lashed out at the bombers.
''They are our enemies, both Shiites and Sunnis should remain united and foil their evil designs,'' he said.
The blasts killed 25 people and wounded about 150 others, said Sajjad Bhutta, a top local government official.
Hours earlier, three people were wounded in a shooting near a similar Shiite procession in the southern city of Karachi, but senior police officer Iqbal Mahmood said the incident did not target the march.
Islamist extremists have a history of attacking Shiites, non-Muslims and others they deem unacceptable.
In July, twin suicide attacks at Pakistan's most popular Sufi shrine killed 42 people. Another suicide bomber wounded eight worshippers at a Shiite mosque in eastern Pakistan.
Meanwhile, a bomb exploded near a police vehicle in the town of Shabqadar in northwest Pakistan, killing one passer-by and wounding 15 people including one police officer, police officer Nisar Khan said.
The bombings came after Pakistan army jets and helicopters targeted militant hide-outs near the Afghan border, killing 60 people identified as insurgents or their family members, including children, said security officials and a witness.
The attacks occurred Tuesday and Wednesday in different parts of the region.
There was no independent confirmation of the casualty figures because the area is too dangerous for outsiders to visit.
The raids Tuesday took place in several villages in Teerah Valley in the Khyber region and killed 45 people, the officials said. One official said some vehicles rigged with explosives had also been destroyed. He could not say how many.
He described the dead as insurgents, but said it was possible that people living with them could also have been killed. Separately, an intelligence officer said some women and children had been killed in the attacks.
Jihad Gul, who lives near one of the villages, said he had seen the bodies of at least 20 women and children.
Army spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas said reports of civilian casualties were unconfirmed.
The security officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
An air attack Wednesday in the adjoining district of Orakzai killed 15 suspected militants and wounded 10 others, according to local government official Jamil Khan and a brief army statement.
Pakistan's army has been fighting Islamist militants in different parts of the northwest for more than two years.
Militants who fled major operations in the South Waziristan and Orakzai tribal regions are believed to have set up new bases in Khyber, about 60 miles (100 kilometers) northwest of the main city in the region, Peshawar.

King Abdullah discusses global issues with Obama

JEDDAH: Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah and US President Barack Obama discussed Tuesday major international issues on telephone, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
It said the US president telephoned the king to convey Ramadan greetings, adding that King Abdullah thanked Obama for the gesture.
During the telephone conversation, the two leaders also discussed bilateral relations.
During King Abdullah's visit to the United States in June, he discussed with Obama security issues, Afghanistan and their shared desire to see Israelis and Palestinians live in peace during their meeting at the White House.

Bomb attack kills Afghan Muslim religious leader

KABUL: A bomb attack Wednesday in Afghanistan’s volatile southern city of Kandahar killed the director of the local office for facilitating pilgrimages to Islamic holy sites, police said.
One other person was killed in the attack on Mohammad Hassan Taimuri and two people wounded, Kandahar police chief Sher Mohammed Zazai said.
The bomb appeared to be a remote controlled device concealed on a motorcycle which exploded Wednesday morning just as the director was leaving his office, according to witness Asad Jan Aghra.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility and it was not clear why anyone would target the director, whose job makes him responsible for managing Islamic religious institutions and arranging pilgrimages to the Islamic holy cities of Mecca and Medina. The pilgrimages are called the hajj, which Muslims are obligated to make at least once in a lifetime.
However, Taliban insurgents who are highly active in Kandahar routinely target government figures and institutions. The city is a longtime stronghold of their hardline Islamic movement and the focus of the American-led operation against the insurgents.
Assassinations of serving and retired government officials — including police — have become virtually a daily occurrence in recent weeks, according to residents, who blame the local authorities for failing to secure the city. Amid the general atmosphere of lawlessness, not all violence is blamed on the Taliban.
‘‘Kandahar city has become an open place for thieves and insurgents. The government is failing and putting their failure on the shoulders of the Taliban,’’ taxi driver Niyamat Agha said.
The attacks on civilians come amid a particularly bloody stretch for the international coalition in Afghanistan, with 19 US service members killed in only four days — most in the south.
The US death toll for the month stood at 56 — three-quarters of them in the second half of the month as the Taliban fight back against US pressure. American losses accounted for more than 70 per cent of the 76 fatalities suffered by the entire Nato-led force.
Until the late month spike, it appeared that the death toll for August would be well below the back-to-back monthly records of 66 in July and 60 in June.
The reason behind the sudden spike in deaths was unclear because few details about the casualties are released for security reasons.
Nato Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen on Tuesday told reporters in Copenhagen, Denmark, that higher casualties were inevitable because more troops have arrived in Afghanistan in recent weeks, bringing the overall alliance force to more than 140,000 — including almost 100,000 Americans. The US figure is more than triple the number of American service members in Afghanistan at the beginning of last year.
When complete, the surge in US troops will be larger than the 30,000 initially approved because US Defense Secretary Robert Gates has authorized an additional 1,300 specialized forces on top of that, US defense officials say.
Under current projections, US forces will top out at just under 100,000 later this fall, including 31,200 surge troops. The United States plans to begin withdrawing at least some forces next July.
On Tuesday, British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg insisted that the military campaign in Afghanistan was ‘‘turning the corner’’ as he wrapped up a two-day unannounced visit to British troops in Helmand.
‘‘We hear so much bad news,’’ he told British soldiers. ‘‘Of course the country mourns when people lose their lives. People are full of anguish when there are serious injuries. But what I have seen today is a complete transformation of the military effort that I first saw when I visited two years ago.’’

AL iftar party comes under bomb attack in city

An Awami League iftar party has come under a bomb attack at Pallabi in Dhaka Tuesday.
Pallabi police station officer-in-charge Iqbal Hossain told bdnews24.com that ‘Lipi, 29, an Awami League worker, sustained injuries.
The incident occurred soon after the iftar ended at Pallabi Eidgah Ground as unidentified miscreants hurled a crude bomb, he said.
He also said creation of panic was probably the motive behind the incident.
Awami League MP, from women’s reserved seat, Shahida Tarique Dipti said local Awami League leader Kamal Master had hosted the iftar party.
The state minister for environment, Hasan Mahmud, was present at the iftar party.

No Chinese troops in Gilgit, claims Pak's envoy to Beijing

BEIJING: Rejecting as "fabricated" reports of presence of up to 11,000 Chinese troops in PoK's Gilgit- Baltistan area, Pakistan's envoy here has claimed that only a "humanitarian team" from China was in the region to assist the flood victims.
"The story is not true and totally fabricated," Pakistan's ambassador to China, Masood Khan, told the state-run 'Global Times' daily.
He was referring to a New York Times report which said that about 7,000 to 11,000 Chinese troops were deployed in the strategic Gilgit-Baltistan region, where Pakistan faced a state of rebellion from the local people.
Khan said there were no Chinese troops in the area, but added that "a humanitarian team" from China was currently there to help locals who have suffered due to the devastating floods.

New York teens charged for harassing Muslim worshipers at mosque

NEW YORK: A group of teenagers in western New York have been arrested for allegedly harassing worshipers at a mosque and firing a shotgun outside the gathering.
The five teens allegedly beeped their car horns and yelled obscenities during a religious service, according to Eyewitness News, a local media outlet.
Tim Weader, 17, Dylan Phillips, 18, Jeff Donahue, 18, and Anthony Ogden, 18 along with Mark Vendetti, 17 have been charged with disrupting a religious service, which is a misdemeanor charge.
Vendetti, who has been charged for firing shots at the mosque, was also arraigned on the weapons charge and remanded to the Orleans County Jail in lieu of USD 10,000 bail. Police say the incident remains under investigation and more charges are expected to be filed, according to Eyewitness News.

15 killed in bomb blast in Somalia

At least fifteen people were killed and more than 30 injured on Tuesday after a roadside bomb explosion hit two passenger buses in the Somali capital Mogadishu, officials and witnesses said.
The explosion ripped through the buses as they plied the only road connecting the divided city and is used by Somali government forces as well as the African Union peacekeeping forces in Mogadishu, Xinhua reported.
"We counted fifteen dead people on both buses and the 30 or so injured people were taken to hospitals in Mogadishu," Nur Hassan, a commander of Somali government forces based in a nearby control post said.

No – it’s an invasion of privacy.
Yes- gun owners have to, why not Muslims?
Currently, 70% of those polled are in favor of forced registration for American Muslims. Granted, this is not a representative sampling of the general population, but it none the less contributes to a disturbing trend of national opinion about Islam.

Afghan Women Still Struggling For Their Rights

This is what will happen to Afghan women if America leaves the country to the Taliban and terrorists.
Obviously this is an example of recent events in Afghanistan. Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t include this very disturbing picture of a young girl whose nose and ears were removed because she tried to run away from her abusive husband. The question Time Magazine asks is, “What Happens If We Leave Afghanistan?”.
Indeed, that is the question. We know what happened when the Taliban came to power in 1996 and was overthrown in late 2001. I found this list of some of the restrictions imposed by the Taliban on Afghan women. While in power, the Taliban enforced one of the strictest interpretations of Sharia law ever seen in the Muslim world, and became notorious internationally for their treatment of women.

Bangladesh minister slammed for comments on Janmashtami

A call by Bangladesh Home Minister Sahara Khatun to the minority Hindu community to observe Janmashtami, the birthday of Lord Krishna, ''peacefully'' and end it by 5 p.m. on Wednesday in time for the end of ''roza'' has been criticised by the nation's media.
The minister's call has been termed "overtly discriminatory" in an editorial on Tuesday in the New Age newspaper that warned: "Secularist safeguard may backfire when the issue is addressed from the wrong angle and with a loaded mindset."
The minister made her "request" at a meeting with leaders of the National Puja Udjapan Committee Sunday when, while discussing security measures, she urged the Hindu community not to use loudspeakers during the period of iftar, the ending of fast by the Muslim community, United News of Bangladesh (UNB) news agency reported on Tuesday.

Pakistan flood: India among top 10 aid-givers

ISLAMABAD: India's decision to increase its flood relief assistance to Pakistan from $ 5 million to $ 25 million has placed it among the top 10 countries/institutions which have loosened their purse strings the most to help Islamabad deal with the unfolding emergency.
Initially billed as “delayed and niggardly,” the Indian response now has catapulted the country to ninth position in the ‘Country-wise update of Foreign Assistance for Flood Affectees,' put out by the Economic Affairs Division of the Pakistan Government.
The last update was made on Monday afternoon — 24 hours before the announcement — and as per this list, the U. S. leads the pack with a commitment of $ 200 million, followed by the U. K., Saudi Public Relief Fund, Saudi Arabia, the European Union, Germany, Canada and the United Nations.

NEW DELHI: Afghanistan National Security Adviser Rangin Dadfar Spanta on Tuesday reiterated the need for New Delhi remaining intimately engaged with Kabul in order to help it develop infrastructure, train civil servants and provide guidance on the global stage.
Mr. Spanta disfavoured suggestions by Afghanistan's neighbours to keep India out, and said his government believed that no country had the right to impose strategic allies on another country.
Investigations by the Afghan security services, he said, found that the attackers of the Indian Embassy and later a guest house in Kabul had links with elements outside the country.

Geelani sets riders for Valley peace

Hardline Hurriyat Conference leader Syed Ali Geelani has offered to end the ongoing stir in Kashmir Valley if his five conditions were met by the Government of India. He said the people of Kashmir were determined to achieve freedom, honour and guarantee of secure future.
Addressing a Press conference at his residence, Geelani, who is spearheading a two-month long ‘Quit Jammu and Kashmir Campaign’ – that urges people to stage protest demonstrations, sit-ins and shutdowns, said that India must agree that Jammu and Kashmir was an international dispute as the first condition to enter into dialogue process with the separatists.

Iranian insults against Carla Bruni ‘unacceptable’: France

France said on Tuesday that insults in the Iranian media against first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, who has been branded an “Italian prostitute” who “deserves death”, are unacceptable.
“The insults in the daily Kayhan and picked up by Iranian websites against several French figures, including Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, are unacceptable,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said.
“We’re making this message known through normal diplomatic channels.”
The Iranian press reacted with fury last week after Bruni-Sarkozy, the wife of France’s President Nicolas Sarkozy, made a public statement in support of an Iranian woman who has been sentenced to be stoned to death.

Blood of murdered Israelis will not go unpunished: Netanyahu

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the "blood of Israeli civilians" would not go unpunished as he vowed to hunt the killers of four Israelis near a Jewish West Bank settlement. "We witnessed today a savage murder of four innocent Israelis," Netanyahu said in Washington yesterday, where he was due to resume direct peace negotiations with the Palestinians tomorrow for the first time since December 2008.
"There are seven new orphans that were added to the circle of grief in Israel," he said, before going into talks
with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. "We will not let the blood of Israeli civilians go unpunished.

Palestinian kills 4 Israelis on eve of peace talks in Washington

JERUSALEM: Palestinian gunmen opened fire on Tuesday on an Israeli car in the West Bank and killed four passengers on the eve of a new round of Mideast peace talks in Washington. The Islamic militant group Hamas claimed responsibility.
The assailants attacked the car as it travelled near Hebron -- a volatile city that has been a flash point of violence in the past. Some 500 ultranationalist Jewish settlers live in heavily fortified enclaves in the city amid more than 100,000 Palestinians.
One of the victims was pregnant, said police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld. Israel's national rescue service said the victims were two men and two women, and Israeli media said everyone in the car was killed.

Pak military delegation detained at US airport

WASHINGTON: A delegation of senior Pakistani military officials visiting the US was deboarded from a plane, detained, "interrogated and rudely treated" by security officials after one of them made a comment to a flight attendant, prompting the team to head home in protest.
The nine-member delegation of high-ranking Pakistani officers boarded United Airlines Flight 727 from the Dulles International Airport in Washington to Tampa on Tuesday, but were pulled off the plane, Mike Trevino, spokesman for the Airlines, was quoted as saying by 'The Washington Post'.
He said they were deboarded from the plane after one of them "made a comment to a flight attendant."

Three militants killed in Swat shootout

MINGORA: Three militants, including two local commanders, were killed in exchange of fire with security forces in Swat on Tuesday.
Official sources said that security forces got information that some wanted militants were present in Malam Jabba area of tehsil Charbagh. They rushed to the site and cordoned off the entire area.
Sources said that militants exchanged fire with security forces. As a result three militants identified as Dawa Khan, Sardar Ali and Bahadar were killed on the spot.
PARACHINAR: Four persons, including three locals, were killed when militants attacked a house in Chenarak area of central Kurram tribal region on Tuesday.
Sources said that a group of militants stormed a house at1pm on Tuesday in Chenarak area. Three inmates of the house, including a woman, and an attacker were killed in exchange of fire, which continued for more than one hour.

Target killings top 165 in August

KARACHI: The month of August has passed but left its marks filled with bloodshed as at least 165 people were killed including famous personalities, Daily Times learnt on Tuesday.
Up till now in the year 2010, August has been the only month in which around 165 people have been killed. The month kicked off with a fresh wave of targeted killings in the city as eight people were killed including an Awami National Party (ANP) activist and a young girl.
The very next day on August 2, an incident of targeted killing claimed the life of a Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader and provincial assembly member Raza Haider. Some militants had gunned him down at Nazimabad. His security guard also lost his life in the tragic incident.
This incident triggered a spate of targeted killings during which about 105 people lost their lives, 165 first information reports were lodged in police stations of three different zones and 170 law-breakers were arrested in connection to the targeted killing incidents.

Six jailed for planning to kill Musharraf

RAWALPINDI: A special Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) judge on Tuesday sentenced six terrorists to life imprisonment for planning to kill former president Pervez Musharraf by bombing the Presidency. Seven other accused were acquitted. Police and other law enforcement agencies raided a house in Dhok Kala Khan on June 6, 2008, and arrested 13 suspects and had also recovered three vehicles, laden with more than 900 kilogrammes of explosive material, from them. Terrorists had planned to explode these vehicles at the Presidency and assassinate Musharraf. BNP-Mengal leader among 2 killed in Kalat

QUETTA: Two people, including a Balochistan National Party- Mengal (BNP-M) leader, were shot dead in Kalat on Tuesday. According to sources, Kalat district BNP leader Nawabuddin Nechari and his friends Saffar Khan and Mullah Bakhsh were on their way on the national highway when unidentified assailants opened indiscriminate fire on their vehicle. As a result, two of them died on the spot while Mullah Bakhsh suffered multiple bullet injuries. Police reached the site soon after the incident and took the bodies and injured to a government hospital. BNP leaders Mir Nooruddin Mengal and Mir Akbar Ali termed the incident a ‘targeted killing’ to eliminate the BNP leadership from the political horizon of Balochistan. 18 killed in Teerah Valley airstrike

BARA: Gunship helicopters bombed three vehicles, killing 18 people and injuring over 25 others in Naray Baba area of Teerah Valley in Khyber Agency on Tuesday.
Sources said the helicopters mistook civilians for terrorists and fired at the vehicles. A hospital and a mosque were also destroyed in the airstrike.
The relatives of the victims staged a protest and shouted slogans against two federal ministers from the tribal area. They demanded an inquiry into the incident.
Another report suggested eight suspects had been killed in the airstrike.
A government official, Ameerzada Khan, said the helicopters pounded terrorists hideouts in Naray Baba and Sheen Drand villages and killed eight of them. Two intelligence officials also confirmed the airstrikes, but said 30 terrorists had been killed.

WAMY downsizes Western operations

RIYADH: The World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY), a major Islamic charity of Saudi Arabia, has downsized its operation in the US, Canada and in many other Western countries because of the stringent restrictions imposed by the respective governments on the fundings of Islamic aid organizations.
The WAMY, an UN-recognized NGO, had a “symbolic presence in the US, while it has closed its offices in Canada,” according to Saleh Al-Wohaibi, WAMY’s secretary-general. Al-Wohaibi, however, said that the WAMY values its partnership with the US and will continue to work with the community stakeholders in that country.

Coptic pope accused in convert’s incarceration

CAIRO: Egypt’s most senior Coptic Christian cleric, Pope Shenouda III, may be summoned to court and forced to release an alleged convert to Islam.
A group of Islamist lawyers has appealed to Egypt’s administrative court demanding that the Coptic Church release Camillia Shehata, the wife of a Coptic preacher, whom they allege has been forcibly incarcerated by the church. The court hearing is scheduled for Nov. 2.
Shehata, 24, left her home at the southern city of Dir-Moas in July and disappeared for five days. She was eventually found by Egyptian security forces and delivered to the church, where she is said to be currently held.
Originally, rumors surrounding Shehata’s possible kidnapping and forced conversion to Islam sparked anti-Muslim protests by Copts in the Egyptian capital Cairo and in Shehata’s province of Minya.

Conditions at deportation center woeful: NSHR

JEDDAH: The National Society for Human Rights (NSHR) told the director general of the Passport Department in the Makkah province that the present condition of the deportation center in Jeddah was unacceptable.
"Our observations against the deportation centers are related to overcrowding of people and lengthy procedures," an NSHR delegation said, expressing its fears that international organizations would exploit such conditions to defame the Kingdom.
Hussein Al-Sharief, director of NSHR's office in the Makkah province, urged the department to find drastic solutions to the problem of overcrowding at the Jeddah center by opening centers in other provinces.

Teen girl from Jubail goes missing in Makkah

ALKHOBAR: A 15-year-old Indian girl from Jubail who had gone to Makkah to perform Umrah along with her parents and four siblings has been missing since Saturday, sending shock waves through the Kingdom’s large expatriate community.
“It is not a missing case,” said Mohammed Iftequaruddin, the girl’s father. “My daughter Mariam has been kidnapped,” he told Arab News from the holy city. “She is a smart and mature child; she knows all our numbers; if she had gone missing, she would have immediately called me or her mother.”
He said this was not the first time they had visited Makkah. “We have been here every year for Umrah. She is in the custody of some evil people who are not allowing her to contact us,” he alleged choking on his words.

Five more American troops die in Afghanistan

KABUL: Five more American troops were killed in action in Afghanistan on Tuesday, ending the month with a spike in bloodshed that has claimed the lives of 19 US service members in only four days.
The US death toll for August stood at 55 — three-quarters of them in the second half of the month as the Taleban fight back against US pressure in southern and eastern strongholds. American losses accounted for more than 70 percent of the 76 fatalities suffered by the entire NATO-led force.
NATO said four of the Americans were killed by a roadside bomb in eastern Afghanistan, while a fifth died in a gunfight with insurgents in the country's south. No other details were released.

Video plea to Obama to pardon Saudi launched

JEDDAH: A number of Saudi youths launched a film on Tuesday appealing to US President Barack Obama to use his constitutional power of presidential pardon to set free a Saudi man jailed for sexual assault.
Humaidan Al-Turki is currently serving 28 years in a US prison.
The five-minute film is supported by top Saudi religious, media and sports figures and is the culmination of a campaign supporting Al-Turki on Twitter and Facebook, which has attracted more than 11,000 followers.
They also set up a special website calling on Obama to release Al-Turki.
Renowned Saudi Islamic scholar Sulaiman Al-Oudah introduces the film by appealing to the US president.

Civil Defense ensures hassle-free Ramadan

MAKKAH: The Civil Defense in Makkah has started implementing its operations plan for the last 10 days of the holy month of Ramadan.
“The Civil Defense forces, in cooperation with other departments concerned, have completed all arrangements and are well-prepared to attend to any emergency situation. There have been no major incidents reported so far since the launch of our Ramadan plan on Shaaban 25 (Aug. 6),” Civil Defense Director in Makkah, Brig. Gen. Jamil Arbaeen, told Arab News.
He added that 4,200 Civil Defense officers have been deployed in the holy city to facilitate the smooth flow of pilgrims and deal with emergency situations.

Riyadh to help probe atrocity against Lankan maid

RIYADH: Sri Lankan officials said on Tuesday that Saudi officials have pledged to cooperate in the investigation into the atrocity allegedly commited by a Saudi couple against their Sri Lankan housemaid.
“We are happy that the Saudi authorities have expressed willingness to cooperate in the investigation to track down the Saudi sponsor who was alleged to have tortured his domestic aide by hammering metal into her body,” Kingsley Ranawake, chairman of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE), told Arab News.
X-rays conducted at the Kamburupitiya hospital in Sri Lanka have shown 24 nails and needles in the body of 49-year-old domestic aide L.T. Ariyawathi, who says the couple she worked for in Saudi Arabia hammered them into her body.

NATO chief optimistic on Afghan security handover

COPENHAGEN — NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on Tuesday he hopes alliance members will give Afghan troops the go-ahead to begin taking charge of their own security at a key summit in November.
“I hope that the NATO summit in November will decide that the process of progressive transfer of responsibilities to Afghans begins in 2011,” Rasmussen said during an official visit to his native Denmark.
International forces would stay in Afghanistan until the country can ensure its own security, Rasmussen said, reiterating support for Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s goal of a full transition by 2014.

Dutch hold two Yemenis after terrorism alert

AMSTERDAM - Dutch authorities detained two Yemeni men at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport on suspicion of terrorist conspiracy after a tip-off from the United States, prosecutors said on Tuesday.
The pair, en route from Chicago to Yemen, were detained on Monday and a decision on bringing charges would be made in the next few days, the Dutch prosecution service said.
“The men are being held in custody on suspicion of conspiracy to commit a terrorist criminal act,” the prosecution service said in a statement.
The Yemenis arrived in Amsterdam from Chicago O’Hare on United flight 908 early on Monday and were detained on the plane after the U.S. Department of Homeland Security alerted Dutch authorities to suspicious items found in their luggage in the United States.

Floods in S.Sudan leave nearly 60,000 homeless

JUBA, Sudan - Floods have displaced nearly 60,000 people in the last month in south Sudan with many at risk of malaria and other diseases, the semi-autonomous region’s government said on Tuesday.
The crisis is another hurdle for the war-ravaged south ahead of a referendum on independence in January, which some analysts fear will be hindered by a worsening humanitarian situation with almost half the region’s 8 million population short of food.
“In the last one month 57,135 people have been displaced by the floods,” said the south’s undersecretary for health Olivia Lomoro, adding that many were at risk of malaria and water-borne diseases.

Four Israelis killed in West bank shooting

HEBRON, Palestinian Territories — Four Israelis, one of them a pregnant woman, were shot dead near the West Bank Jewish settlement of Kyriat Arba on Tuesday, just ahead of renewed peace talks, in what police called a “terrorist attack”.
Police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld said a car in which they were travelling came under fire on a road between the settlement and the Palestinian village of Bani Naim, near the city of Hebron.

Militants threaten to attack judges, lawyers

Militants have threatened to blow up important establishments as well as carry out simultaneous attacks on judges, lawyers and police if what they called their four ‘national leaders’ are not freed within Eid-ul-Fitr.
The unidentified militant outfit under the banner of ‘MDMT’ sent an email containing the threat to the Law Commission on August 25.
However, the email did not mention the names of their four national leaders.
The Registrar of the International Crimes Tribunal Shahinur Islam told UNB that the Law Commission got the email when it opened it Tuesday. He said the police were informed of the matter.
