J& K ‘battle’ plays out on Facebook

AFTER separatists and stone- pelters in Kashmir used Facebook to spread their messages and propaganda, terrorist outfits have woken up to the potential and reach of the social networking site.
Pictures and messages posted on some Facebook accounts have been seeking for the last few weeks to revive the gun culture in the Valley.
The photographs of youth and children holding guns have captions/ messages that exhort Kashmiris to take up arms against India.
The security establishment fears these accounts could have been created by terrorist groups to achieve their dangerous designs.
Police sources said many Facebook users from Pakistan had of late created fake accounts with Kashmiri names and posted materials against the Indian government and security forces.
“These pictures could have been posted by citizens of some other countries, but we cannot rule out the possibility that some terrorist organisation could be behind this,” a police source said.
After the cycle of violence started in the Valley in June, it was the stone- pelters who first began using Facebook to vent their anger and later to connect with fellow protesters and sympathisers during shutdowns and curfews.
Later, the separatists also made it a tool for their propaganda.
But terrorists exploiting the medium and instigating the youth to take to arms is a recent phenomenon, giving the security establishment jitters.
One of the pictures doing the rounds on the site is of a child holding an AK- 47 rifle with the background of Kashmir, with “ Generation Next” written in big letters on the image.
Another combination of photographs shows a bearded man depicted as a jihadi, wearing black clothes and holding a gun, in the middle. On the right of this is the image of a stone- pelter, with “ Sangbaaz, a warrior with stone” written on it. The slogan of “ Go India Go Back” that reverberated on the streets of Srinagar during the recent protests is also written on the photograph.
These photographs have revived fears of the ‘ unarmed’ stone- pelters on the streets of the Valley taking up guns.
With Facebook becoming everyone’s favourite medium to reach out to the youth of Kashmir, the state police, too, have taken the same route to hit back.
The inspector general of police of Kashmir, S. M. Sahai, has created an account to know what the youth want and to address their grievances.
Sahai wrote on his wall: “ I believe that a lot of people think that I have opened this page to find out who all are protesting on Facebook. I don’t need to do that as I can find out in any case. The idea is to find out what we can do to change things, it is not easy either for us or for you. I sincerely hope it shall be taken in the right spirit.” He added: “ Please post your grievances between 8 pm to 9 pm.” He has received nearly 250 grievances since he opened the account about 10 days ago.
While the police have allowed protests and separatist messages on the site, they are in no mood to spare troublemakers.
Faizan Samad, an 18- year- old Class XII student, was arrested by the special operations group of the Jammu and Kashmir Police a few days ago for posting names and addresses of policemen working in Valley on his Facebook account.
He had also uploaded many pictures of protests and people who died in police firing.
Police sources said Samad’s action could have had serious consequences at a time when emotions were running high.

One killed, nine injured in Bahawalpur mosque attack

BAHAWALPUR: One person was killed and nine others were injured after unidentified gunmen opened fire at a mosque in Bahawalpur early Saturday.
Al-qamar mosque came under attack at the break of dawn where worshippers had gathered for Fajr prayers, DawnNews reported.
Three unidentified gunmen opened fire on the devotees, when 25 people were listening to the Quran soon after the prayers.
The gun attack resulted in the death of one person and injured nine others, who were then shifted to the Bahawal Victoria Hospital.
Residents of Satellite Town, the area where the mosque is located, blocked the neighbourhood’s main road and carried out protests against the attack.

The separatist organisations in Kashmir like the Hurriyat have got an advice from the Congress — that they should spare a thought for the citizens in the Pak-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
“There is an advice for the Hurriyat. Please spare a thought for your brethren on the other side (in PoK) who have been reeling under repression for the last 62 years,” said Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari on Friday. He was replying to Pakistan Foreign Office statement that there can be no result-oriented discussions with India on Kashmir unless New Delhi stops treating it as the country’s integral part and seeking a solution within the ambit of the Indian Constitution.
Terming as “preposterous” Pakistan’s statement that India should stop treating Jammu and Kashmir as its integral part, the Congress said the neighbouring country has a big role in the problems that have arisen in the State.
“From 1947 to 2010, India has tried to strengthen democracy in Jammu and Kashmir. Problems have arisen there but Pakistan has a big role in encouraging problems. India has tried to find a solution in is constitutional framework,” Tewari told reporters here.
He said 79 out of 124 districts in Pakistan have been affected by recent floods and the party’s sympathies are with the people of Pakistan. “Even in such trying circumstances, the rulers of Pakistan are trying to interfere in the internal affairs of the country,” Tewari said.
The spokesman said that on October 26, 1947, Maharaja Hari Singh acceded the entire Jammu and Kashmir to India saying Pakistan had illegally occupied some of the areas.
He said Pakistan illegally gave the northern areas which constitute one-third of the State to China on March 2, 1963 and reports indicate that there is a build up of Chinese troops there.

Krishna rejects Qureshi’s rider on peace talks

OUTLINING the agenda for his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi’s visit to India later this year, external affairs minister S. M. Krishna on Friday stressed that there could be no precondition for talks.
This comes a day after a Pakistani official said the visit was dependent on whether New Delhi wanted a comprehensive and sustained dialogue with Islamabad.
As he prepares for a substantive meeting with Qureshi in New York after a chance meeting between the two, Krishna said there could not be any pre- condition for talks when Qureshi visits India.
Sources here said an invitation to visit India was extended to Qureshi during the July talks in Islamabad. Dates for a visit in November- December are being worked out through diplomatic channels.
On Thursday, Pakistan’s foreign office spokesperson Abdul Basit had said in Islamabad that Qureshi’s visit was dependent on whether India wanted a comprehensive and sustained dialogue with Pakistan.
Following the ongoing impasse in Kashmir that led to a visit by an all- party delegation from Delhi, Pakistan has tried to internationalise the issue during the UN General Assembly ( UNGA) session and harped on a “ meaningful dialogue” with India on the issue.
“ Unless India takes a fresh look at its Kashmir policy, does some introspection and stops treating Jammu and Kashmir as its integral part and harping on seeking a solution within the Indian Constitution, we do not believe we can really have meaningful or result- oriented discussions with India on this issue,” Basit had said in Islamabad on Thursday.
But India has made it clear that it would contest any effort by Qureshi to raise the Kashmir issue at the UNGA before Barack Obama’s visit here in November.
Trying to pre- empt the Pakistani move, Krishna said: “ We have taken certain actions in terms of assisting what needs to be done in Kashmir... An all- party delegation has just gone back to Delhi and they have had wide ranging discussions across the board from all shades of opinion.
The government of India is fully conscious of its responsibilities.
Institutional mechanism and individual mechanism will be put in place so that the genuine grievances of Kashmir and the people of Kashmir can be addressed.” Krishna had also pointed out that Pakistan was illegally occupying parts of J& K and that it should end such occupation before advising India.
This week, Qureshi had raised the issue of Kashmir in New York, noting that resolving Kashmir was central to peace in the region and called for the United States’s intervention. “ We call upon the US particularly, which is pressing so responsibly for peace in the Middle- East, to also invest its political capital in trying to help seek an accommodation for Kashmir,” Qureshi had said on Tuesday, while speaking at the New York- based Council on Foreign Relations.
Krishna and Qureshi had a chance encounter at the UN headquarters parking lot in New York while coming out of two separate meetings on Thursday.
Each greeted the other warmly, India’s permanent envoy to the UN Hardeep Singh Puri said.
Krishna asked Qureshi about the flood situation and relief efforts. Qureshi apprised him of relief efforts and also thanked India for its $ 20 million aid routed through the UN. This was their first interaction since the controversial joint presser in Islamabad on July 15 when Qureshi compared home secretary G. K. Pillai with JuD chief Hafiz Saeed. Later, he also accused Krishna of lacking mandate and being remotecontrolled from Delhi.
“ It was a chance encounter and I wouldn’t want to read too much into it. Our minister was waiting for his vehicle when Qureshi arrived. He saw Krishna from a distance, came up to him, and greeted him very warmly,” Puri said. Krishna was coming out of the UN headquarters after meeting British secretary of state William Hague.
Krishna is in New York till September 29 and Qureshi for one day more. Sources said notwithstanding the chance meeting, efforts are being made through diplomatic channels for a ‘ pullaside meeting’ though there is no decision yet. Krishna and Qureshi will come face- to- face at ministerial meetings at the UN.

Sangh says courts are not above Ram

THE Sangh Parivar seems to have no plans to abide by the court decision in the Babri Masjid case.
As suspense builds over the judgment — which has been deferred by a week — the Parivar has declared that no matter what the courts decide, only a Ram temple will be built at the disputed Ayodhya site.
Nritya Gopal Das, president of the Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas, said: “ We cannot imagine an adverse verdict.
All previous verdicts have also been in our favour. Even the excavations have established a temple.” One of the sants , during a press conference, added: “ Courts, be it the lower court, high court or Supreme Court, are not above the Bhagwan Ram. Courts are only for social beings like us.” VHP supremo Ashok Singhal said: “ Law and order is the domain of the government. If it can’t control it, then it should go”. It seems the saffron family, this way, is aiming to regain the relevance it had acquired during the heyday of the Ram Janmabhoomi agitation. Hoping to revive its movement, the VHP ruled out any reconciliation between the warring parties.

Suicide bomber strikes in Russia’s Caucasus

MOSCOW: A suicide bomber blew himself up in Russia’s North Caucasus province of Dagestan, wounding at least 26 people, Russian news agencies reported on Saturday.
The attacker set off explosives after approaching police guarding a cordoned-off site where security forces had battled with suspected militant’s hours earlier, Interfax reported, citing a local law enforcement official.
The blast late on Friday wounded 13 police officers and 13 civilians, the report said. Other reports said as many as 30 people were hurt.
Unidentified assailants gunned down a school principal in her home in Dagestan earlier on Friday, while separate shoot-outs killed 12 people across the North Caucasus.

HER HUSBAND laid down his life fighting the 26/ 11 terrorists in Mumbai. Now, she has done her bit to steer a young man from Bihar away from crime.
Vinita Kamte, wife of slain anti- terrorism squad ( ATS) officer Ashok Kamte, has pardoned her domestic help Jai Prakash Sah, who had stolen jewellery worth lakhs of rupees from her Pune home in the wake of the Mumbai terror attack in 2008.
She forgave him and gave him an opportunity to reform himself after he confessed to his crime and admitted that he had committed a mistake.
Vinita, whose husband was killed by Ajmal Qasab in the Mumbai terror attack on November 26, 2008, filed a compromise petition before the chief judicial magistrate’s court at Chapra through her lawyer to secure Sah’s release after the stolen articles were returned by the district police.

Obama blasts Ahmadinejad’s ‘ hateful’ speech

US PRESIDENT Barack Obama on Friday condemned as hateful, offensive and inexcusable a suggestion by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of a US government role in the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.
Obama, in an interview with the BBC Persian news service, lashed out at Ahmadinejad for the latest of what the White House called a long list of outrageous comments that would deepen Tehran’s isolation from the international community.
“ It was offensive. It was hateful,” Obama said according to interview excerpts released by the White House. “ And particularly for him to make the statement here in Manhattan, just a little north of Ground Zero, where families lost their loved ones ... for him to make a statement like that was inexcusable.” Obama decided to sit down for the interview before Ahmadinejad made his 9/ 11 comments as a way of speaking directly to the Iranian people. BBC Persian is broadcast in Farsi, the dominant language in Iran.

As American citizens, we now stand at a crossroads. At stake are a core constitutional philosophy and our virtues of tolerance, acceptance and understanding.
Park51, better – though erroneously – known as "the mosque at Ground Zero," is the tangible manifestation of this inner strife over the future of our country. I am not writing to belittle other Americans' emotions or their sense of identity tied to the tragedy of 9/11; I am only giving my own perspective as a New Yorker on this controversial issue.
She worked on the 56th floor of Tower One. I was a seventh grader dealing with a lifetime's worth of emotions in a single moment.
It's hard to understand what happened that day, but I can clearly remember the feeling of not knowing whether my mother was dead or alive. I sobbed into my friend's father's arms while he repeated, "She's OK, she wasn't in the building."

LeT planning to use women ultras to trigger violence in J&K: Report

JAMMU: Militant outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) plans to trigger blasts using trained women terrorists who will intermingle with protesters to carry out attacks as part of a strategy to intensify violence in Kashmir Valley, according to intelligence intercepts.
"It has come to the notice of the intelligence agencies through various inputs received that terrorists belonging to LeT are likely to intermingle with the protesters," a brief report of the Army said on Friday.
According to inputs received, LeT operatives have sought permission from their handlers across the border to lob grenades or explode IEDs during demonstrations to trigger large scale casualties and incite protesters to resort to violence, it said.

Home-grown extremism a worrying factor: FBI

WASHINGTON: US is worried about al-Qaida's changed strategies and the growing threat of home-grown extremism as evident from the arrests of the Mumbai attack accused LeT operative David Headley and other such figures like Najibullah Zazi and Faisal Shahzad.
FBI director Robert Mueller told a Congressional hearing that with al-Qaida recruiting westerners for accomplishing its targets, the terror threat had grown all the more complex in the last few years. Mueller said in his testimony that despite significant counterterrorism pressure, al-Qaida continues to be committed to high profile attacks directed at the west, including plans against Europe and the US.
He pointed out that recent investigations have revealed a shift in the strategy of attacks with al-Qaida now making the West its recruiting ground.

Producting of French Halal Meat Under Inspection

Ahlul Bayt News Agency - ABNA - The lack of a central body in France to oversee the authenticity of halal meat has made some experts doubt that animals have been slaughtered following the correct Islamic procedures.
Estimates of the amount of meat labelled halal that does not meet the strict religious standards range from 40 to as high as 80 per cent.
France has Western Europe’s biggest Muslim population and producers are battling for a piece of the €5.5 billion (US$7.05 billion) halal meat market.
According to Islamic law, halal meat must come from animals blessed by a short prayer and slaughtered facing the holy city of Mekah. The animal is traditionally killed with a cut to the throat to allow the blood to drain out, with a view that the meat is cleaner.
Ala’a Gafouri of the Halal Institute of Food Management Industry (HIFMI) in Paris estimated that up to 80 per cent of meat and other products labelled as halal may not meet these criteria.

SRINAGAR: Jammu & Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah's campaign against the contentious Armed Forces Special Powers Act seems to have little resonance here on the street at Ground Zero.
"Will the withdrawal (of AFSPA) get me freedom?" demanded Sabroor who runs a small shop on the outskirts of Srinagar. "We want azaadi. That's all."
For Sabroor, AFSPA is not even an issue. His brother was shot at and wounded by a CRPF jawan, not a soldier. He is angry with the man in khaki, not the one in olive green. And he can't understand why Omar has staked his prestige on pushing the central government into withdrawing the Act or at least amending it. Nor is he bothered about the fight that has broken out between the Army and the home ministry over Omar's demand.

Tajik security forces kill three militants, searching for more

DUSHANBE: Government forces in Tajikistan killed three militants on Friday amid fresh fighting in a volatile region near the border with Afghanistan.
Thousands of troops have surged into the remote Rasht Valley region near the Afghan border as part of a manhunt for militants believed responsible for a string of deadly attacks throughout the Central Asian state in recent weeks.
“Three fighters have been killed,” a Tajik military official said.
“Their identity has not yet been established but these fighters are from local terrorist organizations.”
A valley in Tajikistan has become the scene of a major security sweep following weeks of militant attacks that have fueled fears that violence may be spilling over from Afghanistan. Tajikistan has been on high alert for weeks amid terrorist blasts and a prison escape by insurgents and government opponents. A weekend ambush on a military convoy left at least 25 soldiers dead in a remote gorge along the Rasht Valley.

Two shot dead in Khuzdar

QUETTA: Two brothers were shot dead by unidentified men in Khuzdar on Friday, police said.
According to official sources, the victims were standing outside their residence in Mashk when unknown assailants riding a motorcycle opened fire at them. They received multiple bullet wounds and died on the spot.
The perpetrators managed to escape from the scene after committing the crime. Security personnel rushed to the spot soon after the incident and took the deceased to a nearby hospital for autopsy. The victims were identified as Ameer Bhaksh and Qadir Bhaksh. The bodies were handed over to their relatives for burial.
Police termed the incident the result of a personal feud.

US rights group calls Aafia’s sentence ‘unjust’

NEW YORK: A New York-based human rights group has condemned as “unfair and unjust” the 86-year prison sentence handed down to Dr Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistan neuroscientist, saying she had never caused harm to anyone.
“This sentence is not only unjust because of its harshness to Aafia – but also because of its impact on her two children in Pakistan who may never see their mother again,” the International Justice Network, attorneys for the Siddiqui’s family, said in a statement after Thursday’s tough sentence imposed by US District Judge Richard Berman.
“But the greatest injustice of all is that those who are responsible for the kidnapping, disappearance, and abuse of Aafia and her children without cause have yet to answer for their actions.

Driver killed as militants attack Nato tankers in Kalat

KALAT: One person was killed in when suspected militants attacked Nato supply tankers in central Balochistan on Saturday.
Attackers set on fire two supply tankers carrying fuel for Nato forces deployed in Afghanistan as the convoy passed through Mangochir area of Kalat in central Balochistan.
The attack was carried out through bouts of firing from the militants, which resulted in the death one of the truck drivers, DawnNews reported.
Nato supply tankers carrying goods and fuel for the Nato and Isaf forces deployed in Afghanistan are regularly targeted by militants.
The convoy was on its way from Karachi to landlocked Afghanistan, through the Balochistan province, when militants opened fire.

Israel-Palestine peace talks in jeopardy, Hillary and Abbas meet

NEW YORK: Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton spent nearly a half-hour on Friday meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas as the Obama administration tried to prevent Israeli-Palestinian peace talks from collapsing.
The Palestinians have threatened to walk out of the talks if Israel does not extend a slowdown in West Bank settlement activity that expires on Sunday.
After Clinton's 25-minute meeting with Abbas, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters that the US efforts to keep the talks alive were continuing.
In a furious, last-minute round of diplomacy, the Obama administration is pressing Israel to extend the settlement slowdown, while urging Abbas not to make good on his threat to leave the negotiations.

Senior Egyptian bishop in hot water over Koran statement

CAIRO: A senior Coptic bishop has caused a furore in Egypt by suggesting that some verses in the Koran, the Muslim holy book, were inserted at a date after it was first set down, press reports said on Friday.
Bishop Bishoy, secretary of the Coptic Church's Holy Synod, suggested last week that certain verses of the Koran had been inserted into the holy book after the death of the Prophet Mohammed, implying doubt over their validity.
Muslims believe the Koran was handed down to Mohammed verbatim by the Archangel Gabriel over a period of around 23 years.

Iran's rebel blogger faces death penalty

OTTAWA: A Canadian-Iranian blogger credited with starting the blogging movement in Iran faces the death penalty over his writings, two watchdog groups said.
Hossein Derakhshan was arrested after returning to Iran in November 2008 and charged with "collaborating with enemy states, creating propaganda against the Islamic regime, insulting religious sanctity, and creating propaganda for anti-revolutionary groups," said Canadian Journalists for Free Expression.
As per two organizations, prosecutors are calling for him to face the death penalty after he was convicted by Tehran's revolutionary court this year.

Software bomb fired at Iran N-plant

SAN FRANCISCO: Computer security experts are studying a scary new cyber weapon: a software smart bomb that may have been crafted to find and sabotage a nuclear facility in Iran.
Malicious software, or malware, dubbed "Stuxnet" is able to recognize a specific facility's control network and then destroy it, according to German computer security researcher Ralph Langner. "Welcome to cyber war," Langner said in a post at his website. "This is sabotage." Langner has been analyzing Stuxnet since it was discovered in June and said the code had a technology fingerprint of the control system it was seeking and would go into action automatically when it found its target.

Court declares 'Pak' citizen Indian

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Ibrahim will no longer be called a Pakistani. At the end of a long and grueling legal battle, a magistrate court has finally declared the 61-year-old to be an Indian citizen.
A resident of Vallikad in Kozhikode district, C Ibrahim was arrested by the local police on July 18, 2003 allegedly for overstaying in the country as he held a Pakistani passport.
The case went to court and a legal fight ensued. On Thursday, judicial first class magistrate Jomon John observed that the prosecution had not been able to produce enough evidence to support its charge that Ibrahim was a citizen of Pakistan. The order said he was born to Malayalee parents and lived in Malabar. The court also set him free.

Ayodhya under aerial surveillance

With the apex court offering option for a last minute reconciliation to warring parties staking claim on the disputed Ayodhya site, the Uttar Pradesh Government has put the existing Ram temple there under round-the-clock aerial surveillance since Thursday night.
Besides aerial surveillance of the area, the authorities have also completed digital satellite mapping of the disputed Ram Janmabhoomi (RJB) complex and its periphery last month.
A Government helicopter equipped with night vision, high-power searchlights and video cameras, has been pressed into service to detect any movement in the restricted area and to keep a close watch on buildings close to the RJB complex.
After taking a flight in the company of DIG RK Rai and District Magistrate MP Agarwal, Fasizabad SSP RKS Rathore said the helicopter would record all activity in and around the RJB complex.

SC staying Ayodhya title suit verdict 'inexplicable': Karat

NEW DELHI: The CPM on Friday said it was "inexplicable" why the Supreme Court stayed by a week the Ayodhya title suit verdict as the matter could not be settled out of court.
"It is inexplicable why the bench of the Supreme Court has decided to defer the verdict being given as there is no possibility of any settlement outside the court on this issue," party general secretary Prakash Karat said here.
He said it was expected that a verdict would be given by the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on Friday.
Reacting to the apex court's decision to stay for a week the title suite verdict, CPM leader Sitaram Yechury has also said that while negotiations and reconciliation were always welcome, "in all these years this has not been achieved. How can one expect to achieve this, that too within a week?"

BJP blames judicial delay for failure to resolve Babri dispute

NEW DELHI: BJP on Friday declared opposition to the deferment of verdict that Allahabad high court is to give on the title suits of the disputed Ayodhya site.
The principal Opposition, which did not react on Thursday when the Supreme Court in a surprise move stopped the Allahabad HC from delivering the much-awaited verdict, suddenly upped its ante over the issue. "BJP is of the considered opinion that judicial delays over last 61 years have contributed to the failure to construct a Ram temple at Ayodhya. We hope that resolution of this issue is not delayed any further," party leader Arun Jaitley said.
The decision to publicise its reservations about the SC's interim order was taken at a meeting of senior leaders including party chief Nitin Gadkari, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj and former party chief Murli Manohar Joshi, and it came as a surprise to many.

Opened flood gates in Nigeria displace 2 million people

LAGOS: Nigerian authorities opened the gates at two swollen dams in the country's rain-soaked north, sending a flood into a neighboring state that has displaced 2 million people, officials said on Friday.
Water from the Challawa and Tiga dams has swept through rural Jigawa state, bordering the nation of Niger, said Umar Kyari, a spokesman for the state governor. Kyari said the rising waters have affected about 5,000 villages in the typically arid region approaching the Sahara Desert.
"They released water indiscriminately," Kyari said. "That's what why the water flows."
It wasn't immediately clear whether residents received a warning or if anyone was injured or went missing in the flooding. Officials typically open dams seasonally in the region, but it appears far more water flowed out than residents expected.

Malayalam, Urdu writers claim Jnanpith awards

NEW DELHI: Malayalam litterateur O.N.V. Kurup and Urdu poet Akhlaq Khan Shahryar were on Friday chosen for the Jnanpith Award for 2007 and 2008 respectively. The selection board chaired by Oriya writer and Jnanpith winner Sitakant Mahapatra made the choices for the top literary awards.
Kurup, popularly known as “ONV”, is a leading voice among contemporary Malayalam poets. As a statement issued by Bharatiya Jnanpith, the trust that presents the award, noted, he began his career as a “progressive writer and matured into a humanist though he never gave up his commitment to socialist ideology.” ONV has 20 collections of poetry and six works of prose to his credit.
Born in 1936 in a Muslim Rajput family in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district, Shahryar shaped himself as an “intellectual poet”, whose poetry strongly expresses an “ideological non-commitment.”

Officers said the severed head was left on steps leading to the Shah Jalal Bangladeshi Community House in Cambridge late on Monday.
A spokesman said Muslim worshippers - found the head as they arrived at the mosque for prayers.
Abdul Arain, who runs the city’s Muslim helpline, told the Cambbridge News: “Muslims understand that this person has their own agenda but it will not affect our agenda to live peacefully.
“People are angry, sad, and some people say this is not representative of Cambridge and is a sectarian attack."

Compensate kin of fishermen jailed in Pak: HC

The Gujarat High Court on Thursday ordered the Centre to pay compensations to the families of fishermen who languish in Pakistani jails after being arrested by Pakistan Marine Security Agency (PMSA).
A division Bench comprising Chief Justice SJ Mukhopadhyay and Justice Anant Dave ordered the Union Ministry of Animal Husbandry & Fisheries to pay each of the families of fishermen held in Pakistani jails `3 lakh.
The ruling would benefit 582 families in coastal Gujarat, from where fishermen venture into sea but often get abducted by Pakistani agencies, said advocate Kishore Paul, who filed the public interest petition on behalf of the National Fish Workers’ Forum.
As there is no clear demarcation of the international boundary in the high seas, fishermen from Porbandar, Veraval, Mangrol, Diu and Jakhau often land up in Pakistan’s jails and stay there for years.

China-Pak nuke deal may not get suppliers group nod, hints US

With China pressing ahead on its controversial decision to supply two additional nuclear reactors to Pakistan, the US on Friday indicated that the deal may not get the approval of the 46-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) given Islamabad’s track record.
Asked if the US was concerned over China’s plans to supply additional reactors to Pakistan, US Ambassador to India Timothy J Roemer said, “I am not sure it will happen in Pakistan, given their track record. This is very important issue with respect to China.”
He also contrasted Pakistan’s track record with India and said the Indo-US civil nuclear partnership “says loudly to the world community (that) we trust India given its track record on the proliferation issues.
“One of the fundamental important issues for the US is not only India’s flawless track record and high-trust but also the US efforts to try as Prime Minister Singh has said to provide more inclusive growth to Indians...”

Judiciary has right to review immunity: Nawaz

LAHORE: Putting his weight behind the judiciary in the ongoing confrontation between it and the federal government over Swiss accounts, NRO and other issues, Pakistan Muslim League-N chief Nawaz Sharif said on Friday he was with the judiciary even at the cost of his political career.
He warned that a change in government was not far off if rulers did not mend themselves. However, he said, change should not be engineered.
“The Supreme Court has been restored after a long struggle by the nation not for defying its verdicts on each and every step,” Mr Sharif said, adding that he would not change his principled stance on the judiciary even if it cost his political career.
“I’m with the Supreme Court, with the rule of law and not ready to support any illegal step or corruption,” he said at a press conference after presiding over a party meeting held to discuss rehabilitation of flood-affected people.

UN demands $180m dollars to feed Pakistan flood victims

ISLAMABAD: The United Nations on Friday called for 180 million dollars to feed six million flood victims in Pakistan till the end of this year.
The UN is facing a shortage of money to meet the food requirements of victims of the disaster over the next two months, senior World Food Program official David Kaatrud said.
“We have a very large distribution program for six million people on the monthly basis, with a food basket of eight (essential) items,” he told a news briefing.
Kaatrud said the WFP would face a shortage of cooking oil and pulses in October and November.
“It is over 100 million US dollars for October and an additional 80 million dollars for November, let's say till the end of the year,” he said in response to a question about details of the shortages.

US to renew demand for access to Dr Khan

WASHINGTON: The US plans to renew a demand for direct access to Dr A.Q. Khan as Washington tries to prevent China from building two new nuclear reactors at Chashma, says a senior American diplomat.
“I intend to raise the question again of our repeated requests to have our people be able to interview Khan,” Cameron Munter, the Obama administration’s ambassador-designate for Pakistan, told his confirmation hearing on Thursday afternoon.
The US believes that Dr Khan ran a ring of nuclear proliferators and supplied nuclear technology to Iran, Libya and North Korea.
Diplomatic observers in Washington see America’s renewed interest in Dr Khan against the backdrop of China’s plan to build new reactors in Pakistan.

Israel bars Friday worshippers from Al-Aqsa

RAMALLAH: The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and Palestine Sheikh Mohammed Hussein said that the Israeli police prevented thousands of Palestinian worshippers from attending the Friday prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.
Hussein said in a press statement that the Jerusalem police allowed Palestinian men over the age of 50 carrying Israeli identity card to enter the mosque for the prayer. He added that the women's entry was not limited. The Israeli police confirmed the move.
The police said the move was part of efforts to prevent disturbances following the Wednesday's shooting attack in the East Jerusalem's neighborhood of Silwan where 32-year-old Samer Sarhan was shot dead by an Israeli security guard.
The Israeli military already had imposed a 10-day closure of the West Bank as Jews celebrate the festival of Sukkot.

Detained Afghan journalists freed

KABUL: Three journalists detained by coalition forces and Afghanistan’s intelligence service for allegedly spreading Taleban propaganda have been freed, NATO said on Friday, following an outcry from media workers and a call from President Hamid Karzai for their quick release.
The three Afghan journalists were detained over the past week — Rahmatullah Naikzad and Mohammad Nadir by the NATO-led coalition and Afghan security forces, and the third by the Afghan intelligence service.
NATO said all three had been released by Friday evening.
Naikzad, who has worked for Al-Jazeera and as a freelancer for The Associated Press, was detained by coalition forces in the eastern town of Ghazni. He was released Friday and has returned home, he told the AP. Earlier in the day, Al-Jazeera cameraman Nadir, who was arrested Wednesday in the southern city of Kandahar, was also released.

Israeli navy kills Gaza fisherman

GAZA CITY: A Palestinian fisherman was killed on Friday morning when the Israeli navy fired on his boat off the northern Gaza Strip, witnesses and medical sources said.
The body of 20-year-old Mohammed Mansour Bakr arrived at Kamal Edwan Hospital with bullets in the chest from gunfire by an Israel naval ship enforcing the sea blockade on Gaza, medical sources said.
An Israeli military spokeswoman confirmed that naval vessels shot at a fishing boat after it approached the limits of waters where Israel permits Palestinian fishermen maritime traffic. She added that at first the warships fired warning shots at the fishing boat and called on it to return to the three-nautical-miles fishing limit. When the boat failed to return, the soldiers fired directly at the Palestinian boat.

‘Saudi participation in G20 summit is very important’

RIYADH: Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah has been invited to attend the summit meeting of the Group of 20 (G20) developed and emerging economies, to be held in the South Korean capital city of Seoul for two days from Nov. 11.
Hong Jong-ki, the outgoing Korean ambassador, said on Thursday that the Kingdom’s participation in the summit was “very important,” both bilaterally as well as from a global perspective.
Saudi Arabia, Hong said, was the only OPEC member in the G20. “Moreover, the Kingdom assumes a leadership position in both the Arab and the Muslim world, representing a very diverse political constituency, while it has been increasingly exposed to the challenges of globalization,” said the diplomat.

BEIRUT: "The Truth" was the rallying cry for hundreds of thousands of angry Lebanese who took to the streets of Beirut five years ago demanding to know who was behind the assassination of their hero, former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Their movement helped reshape Lebanon's politics.
But now the quest to uncover and prosecute Hariri's killers threatens to tear the country apart.
The possibility that the UN tribunal investigating the murder could indict members of the Shiite militant group Hezbollah — perhaps as soon as next month — is fueling Lebanon's worst political crisis in years. Deep feuds between Western-backed parties and Hezbollah worsened this week, raising fears they could bring down the fragile unity government in which both serve, and which is led by the slain leader's son, Saad Hariri.

Yemen army storms Al-Qaeda hideout in Huta

SANAA: Anti-terrorism forces in Yemen backed by the army cleared the Huta city of insurgents in the early hours of Friday ending a three-day assault on the hideouts of Al-Qaeda in Shabwa province, the Ministry of Defense said.
Brig. Ahmed Al-Maqdish said security forces and special forces from the army are hunting down the terrorists who fled to the mountains, confirming that the army is besieging the mountains.
On Tuesday, Yemeni forces launched an all-out campaign against Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula outfit in Shabwa.
Local sources said the clashes erupted when militants attacked a military patrol killing two officers. Al-Qaeda was accused of carrying out the attack. Four soldiers have been killed since the beginning of the campaign.

AIMPLB to move SC opposing Ayodhya verdict deferment

LUCKNOW: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has said it will move the Supreme Court to oppose the application for deferment of the Ayodhya title suit verdict.
"In the past several efforts had been made to sort out the issue amicably, but they failed to give result. If required the AIMPLB would also move an application in the SC against plea of Ramesh Chandra Tripathi," AIMPLB's working committee member Qasim Rasool Illiyas told PTI.
He said the board was in favour of the verdict on the Ayodhya title suit.
"After all whatever verdict the Allahabad High Court delivers it would be interim and ultimately the aggrieved party will move the SC," the national convenor of the Babri Masjid Action Committee said.

Afghan Equality and Law, but With Strings Attached

KABUL, Afghanistan — It was an engaging idea. Hundreds of children would gather on the iconic Nader Khan Hill in the capital, Kabul, on a gorgeous Friday in September and fly kites emblazoned with slogans lauding the rule of law and equality for women. The kites, along with copies of the Afghan Constitution and justice-themed comic books, would be gifts of the United States, part of a $35 million effort “to promote the use of Afghanistan’s formal justice system.”
“The mere portrait of 500 kites soaring in the winds, against a backdrop of beautiful mountain ranges, is enough to instill hope in even the most disheartened observer of the war-torn country,” said a promotional release for the festival, organized by an American contractor for the United States Agency for International Development.
