All-party delegation led by PC arrives in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: An all-party delegation led by Home Minister P Chidambaram arrived here on Monday on a two-day visit to assess the ground situation in Kashmir Valley which has witnessed unabated violence in recent months.
Some members of the 42-member delegation are likely to call on hardline Hurriyat leader Sye Ali Shah Geelani at his Hyderpora residence here.
Though Geelani has officially refused to meet them, he said the delegation members will not be turned away if they decide to call on him at his house as they were guests.
The separatists have given mixed signals to the visit of the delegation. While the moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference headed by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and JKLF led by Mohammad Yasin Malik has said that they will hold joint consultations to decide whether to meet the delegation, the hardline faction led by Geelani has decided to boycott it.
The delegation hopes that the leaders of various separatist groups will finally come for the talks to help break the impasse in Kashmir which has witnessed unabated violence over the last few months claiming over 100 lives.
The opposition PDP had yesterday threatened to reconsider its participation, accusing the Jammu and Kashmir government of "sabotaging" the visit by clamping curfew in the Valley.
"If the repressive measures continue, we will have to reconsider our decision (of being part of the all-party initiative)," PDP president Mehbooba Mufti had said.
She had said there was no purpose in the visit of the all-party delegation if the members of the civil society, those raising the voice of dissent and the common people are not allowed to meet it.
Dismissing the PDP charge as misleading and baseless, Jammu and Kashmir Law Minister Ali Mohammad had said it was surprising that it was all praise for the all-party initiative two days ago but has suddenly changed its stand.
"I do not know what has changed in two days. I will leave it to the people of Jammu and Kashmir to decide who is trying to scuttle the visit of the delegation."
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah rejecting the demand for his resignation said without naming any party that those behind it were "some frustrated political elements who failed to make it to the Government in the 2008 elections".

SRINAGAR: Brushing aside Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani's rejection of its invitation for talks, the all-party delegation to the Valley led by home minister P Chidambaram is willing to call on the separatist leader as well as the moderate Mirwaiz Umer Farooq to get their views on the crisis.
CPM MP Sitaram Yechury, who is part of the 35-strong team, told TOI the delegation would stop at the separatist leader's Hyderpora residence and also speak to the Mirwaiz. ''What's the point of coming to Srinagar if we don't meet the people who matter in the current crisis,'' Yechury asked.
A reluctant Geelani responded: ''Any guest can come to my house. I can't stop anybody from visiting me.''
The Mirwaiz has had several rounds of talks with successive prime ministers in the past.
Giving his reason for rejecting the state government's written invitation to him, Geelani said, ''Since the mandate of the delegation is limited to talking within the framework of the Indian Constitution, we have decided not to meet it,'' adding that he would participate in the talks only if the Centre acknowledges that Kashmir is disputed and needs to be resolved.
The government has also sent written invitations to Mirwaiz and Yasin Malik besides members of civil society including NGOs, Kashmir Bar Association and students and business groups.

Fresh wave of target killings in Karachi: five dead

KARACHI: In a fresh wave of target killings, at least five people were gunned down in different areas of the city around midnight on Sunday.
Police said three activists of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (formerly proscribed Sipah-i-Sahaba) came under fire in Sector 11-E of New Karachi. They were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where they were pronounced dead.
Police said Ansar, his brother Nabeel and Noman were sitting near a teashop when they were attacked by gunmen who were on a motorbike. Karachi West DIG Sultan Khawaja told Dawn that initial information suggested that the three were activists of the proscribed Sipah-i-Sahaba.
An activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement was gunned down in F.B. Area and another in Korangi. According to police, Farhan, 28, was attacked in the Yousaf Plaza area. The attackers who were on a motorbike escaped.
Earlier, Dilawar Masih, 30, was killed in Korangi when he was sitting outside his house. His killers also were on a motorcycle. The body was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for post-mortem.

At least 23 soldiers killed in Tajikistan ambush

DUSHANBE: At least 23 soldiers were killed in Tajikistan after a convoy was ambushed by heavily armed militants — a devastating blow that will shake this impoverished nation lying on Afghanistan's poorly secured northern border.
The military convoy was heading for eastern Rasht district, an area near the border with Afghanistan, when it was attacked in a valley Sunday, Defence Ministry spokesman Faridun Makhmadaliyev said Monday.
The attackers were led by Mullo Abdullo, a radical militant commander who came to prominence during the civil war that devastated this former Soviet republic in the 1990s, Makhmadaliyev said.
Abdullo fled to Afghanistan after the end of the civil war in 1997, but he is believed to have returned to his native country some time last year in an effort to overthrow the government led by President Emomali Rakhmon.
Many soldiers were seriously wounded and evacuated for treatment after Sunday's ambush, Makhmadaliyev said.
The attack comes amid rising tension following a string of terrorist blasts and a large-scale prison escape by insurgents and government opponents.
The gunmen are believed to have included citizens from Afghanistan and Pakistan, as well fighters from the volatile southern Russian region of Chechnya, Makhmadaliyev said.
No details were immediately available whether any of the gunmen were killed or captured.
Most fighters gave up armed resistance after reaching an uneasy peace settlement with the government. But many returned with a hard-line anti-government position over concerns they were being squeezed out of official positions granted to them as part of the peace agreement.
Military activity in the remote and mountainous Rasht Valley, where Abdullo is believed to have taken refuge, has picked up in recent weeks as authorities seek to capture 18 men still on the run after a dramatic prison breakout last month.
Only seven of the 25 fugitives, who included many militants and government opponents, have been captured.
Sunday's attack also comes amid rising tension following a series of recent terrorist blasts.
A suicide bombing against a police station in the northern city of Khujand earlier this month claimed two victims and wounded 25. Days later, a bomb was detonated in a disco in the capital, Dushanbe, wounding seven.
Authorities believe religiously-motivated militants were responsible for both bombings.

Three NATO troops killed

KABUL—Three foreign troops have been killed in Afghanistan — two in a bombing in the south, and another soldier in an insurgent attack in the country’s north, NATO said Sunday.
NATO’s International Security Assistance Force said in separate statements that all three died on Saturday, but gave no further details of the incidents. Improvised bombs are the Taliban’s main weapon against around 150,000 NATO and US troops in the country, fighting to quell the nine-year insurgency. The latest deaths raise Saturday’s toll of foreign soldiers killed to five as Afghanistan held parliamentary elections throughout the war-wracked country. The deaths bring to 515 the number of foreign troops killed in the Afghan war this year, according to an AFP count based on the icasualties.org tally.
The toll has almost hit the record annual figure of 521 in 2009, since the insurgents were overthrown in a US-led invasion in 2001.

Husain's works fetch Rs.11.69 crore

NEW YORK: Fifteen works of art by painter M.F. Husain, including a canvas work he gifted to Italian film director Roberto Rossellini and his Indian wife, have fetched Rs.11.69 crore at a Sotheby's auction here.
The highlight of the South Asian Art sale was undoubtedly Cinq Sens (Five Senses) by Husain, who celebrated his 95th birthday on September 16. The large canvas, painted at the Italian home of Rossellini and his wife Sonali Sen Roy Dasgupta in 1958, went for Rs.3.6 crore.
Husain spent an extended period of time in Italy with the Rossellinis during the late 1950s and gifted this painting to the couple, from whom it was acquired by the current owner.

India to focus on terror at UN meet

India will focus on the terrorism menace in the UN General Assembly session beginning in New York on Monday and urge the international community to adopt a legal framework making its binding on all countries to deny space to terror groups.
External Affairs Minister SM Krishna, who leads the Indian delegation to the UN, is also likely to make a case for reforms in the UN Security Council. India is pitching for a permanent seat in the council.
The Minister, accompanied by Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao, is also likely to make an important policy declaration on disarmament, particularly on the Fissile Material Control Treaty, sources said here on Sunday.

Jama Masjid attack: Suspected IM email created in India

NEW DELHI: The e-mail sent by terror outfit Indian Mujahideen after the Jama Masjid firing on two terrorist is learnt to have been created from a location in India, few minutes after the firing incident and the person owns another account at rediff.
Investigators cla im that the e-mail id al.arbi99913@gmail.com was created at 11.30 am on Sunday while the alleged incident of firing was reported at 11.22 am. The e-mails to news channels and agencies were sent at 1.30 pm. The account says that it will automatically become non operational on September 26.
Investigations also point that the person who created the e-mail id also has an e-mail account at rediffmail.com. The details provided in operating the gmail account points that the person has an account with rediffmail using the same numerical.

A 'warning shot' before Games

NEW DELHI: In a strike clearly aimed at creating fear and uncertainty ahead of the Commonwealth Games, two bike-borne assailants sprayed bullets on a group of Taiwanese nationals outside the historic Jama Masjid in old Delhi on Sunday morning, injuring two tourists. The timing of the attack -- on the second anniversary of the Batla House shootout -- and an email by 'Indian Mujahideen' claiming responsibility, indicate that the planners had focused on sending a 'message' rather than inflicting huge damage.
More than two hours after the shooting, a Maruti 800 parked close to the site mysteriously caught fire. Later, the bomb disposal squad found a pressure cooker fitted with a crude device on the rear seat which could be an explosive or an inflammable substance.
The attack brought back memories of the 26/11 Mumbai strike, pointing to the continuing strategy of terrorists of picking soft targets like foreign nationals at public places.

ATTACK COULD HAVE BEEN MORE FATAL’

SUNDAY’S firing incident near the Jama Masjid bears the symbol of a terror attack.
In fact, it is a terror attack carried out by the Indian Mujahideen ( IM). This became evident after the IM sent an email to the BBC. The attack even bears the IM’s signature.
The reasons for staging the attack could range from the upcoming September 24 Ayodhya verdict to the Commonwealth Games.
The attackers used a 5- mm pistol and did not carry a bigger weapon as they were riding a bike in the heart of the city in the morning. It would have been difficult for them to carry a bigger weapon.
It would be erroneous to describe the attack as a low profile one. It may have injured two Taiwanese nationals, but it could have been more fatal. We are fortunate that no one was killed.

LeT proxy strikes on anniv of Batla House encounter

NEW DELHI: Preliminary investigation into the Jama Masjid shooting and rudimentary car bomb explosion on the anniversary of the Batla House shootout in the Capital seems to confirm Indian Mujahideen's involvement, attesting to the claim made by the terror group which was behind the spate of terror attacks across several cities between 2007 and 2009.
With this, the terror group, which was forced to lie low after the arrests of its members and the elimination of its commander Atif Amin in the Batla House encounter, has demonstrated its intent and capability to launch fresh attacks on Indian cities, exposing the vulnerability of the law-enforcement apparatus in the process.
It has threatened more attacks in the lead-up to the Commonwealth Games in Indian cities, and has warned the participants to stay away.

IM mail expresses solidarity with Kashmiris

New Delhi: A day ahead of the visit of an all-party delegation to Jammu and Kashmir, terror outfit Indian Mujahideen accused Indian forces of killing hundreds of innocents and warned to retaliate by launching a series of terror attacks on Indian cities.
In an email titled `As We Bleed, So Will You Seep (sic)', the IM, a proxy of ISI-LeT combine, quoted first PM Jawaharlal Nehru's assurance to hold plebiscite and accused the international community of ignoring "Kashmir's right" to self-determination.
Saying that its ranks have swelled, the email warned, "Remember! As we bleed, so will you seep (sic). As and when our innocents are butchered so will we mince you. As our children face the horrors so will your kids enjoy the same."

Clinton urges 'responsible' leaders to take control in Iran

WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called on Sunday on "responsible" leaders to assert control in Iran and said tough UN sanctions were turning the screw on the military-backed regime.
Short of an explicit call to the Iranian people to revolt, Clinton's comments represented a sharpening of rhetoric as she increasingly seeks to portray Iran as a military dictatorship.
Clinton said the military, especially the elite Revolutionary Guard, was wielding more and more power to prop up a regime struggling to maintain its legitimacy since last year's "very flawed" presidential elections.
"And I can only hope that there will be some effort inside Iran, by responsible civil and religious leaders, to take hold of the apparatus of the state," she told ABC News.

Killing for fun: 5 US soldiers in the dock

WASHINGTON: Five US soldiers in Afghanistan's Kandahar province have been charged with murdering three Afghan civilians, the Washington Post reported on Sunday.
According to the Post, the unprovoked attack on January 15 was the start of a months-long shooting spree against civilians that resulted in some of the grisliest allegations against US soldiers since the US invasion in 2001. Members of the platoon have been charged with dismembering and photographing corpses, as well as hoarding a skull and other human bones, the report said.
The father of one soldier said he repeatedly tried to alert the army after his son told him about the first killing, only to be rebuffed, the Post said.

Iran prez flays hardline daily for calling Bruni 'prostitute'

DUBAI: Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has come down heavily on a hardline daily which called Carla Bruni a "prostitute", saying such an insult was "contrary to Islam" and "a crime worse than a crime".
"Certain things happen in our media which I do not believe in at all. For example, can a publication attribute a trait to the wife of a European president?" he was quoted as saying by the state-run newspaper 'Iran' in a clear reference to the glamorous French First Lady.
"What kind of Islam allows that?. Such insults were contrary to religion and a crime worse than a crime. If there really is justice, the perpetrators should be prosecuted," the Iranian President said.

Ahmadinejad ready to discuss Taliban with US

WASHINGTON: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Sunday his government was open to diplomatic discussions with the United States on the subject of Afghanistan and the Taliban.
In an interview on ABC’s “This Week” programme, Mr Ahmadinejad also agreed to discuss Iran’s nuclear programme with the US and other western powers.
“I think that discussions are always good, provided they are done respectfully and based on mutual trust,” Mr Ahmadinejad told the interviewer, Christiane Amanpour. “If the US administration truly wishes to alter its policies in Afghanistan, and in Iraq, and to move in a direction that serves the interest of the people of those two countries, we are always open to cooperation, as we are now.”

Kerala girl hounded for not wearing burqa

IN GOD’S own country, Muslim fundamentalists seem to be having a field day.
A couple of months after a Christian professor’s right hand was chopped off for allegedly preparing a question paper with disparaging remarks on Prophet Mohammed, a 22- yearold girl has been threatened with dire consequences for not wearing burqa and donning ‘ un- Islamic’ dresses instead.
Reyhana is a devout Muslim and stays with her parents in Vidyanagar, a Muslimdominated area in Kerala’s northern district of Kasargod bordering Mangalore.
Their lives have been turned upside down ever since Reyhana became the target of Muslim fundamentalists.
This aeronautical engineering graduate is being hunted by radicals for wearing churidar, jeans and other modern dresses which, according to them, are forbidden for Muslim girls.

Varsity wants prof’s removal reviewed

The Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, has asked the management of Church-run Newman College in Thodupuzha, Kerala, to review of its decision to sack Prof TJ Joseph, victim of a brutal Islamist attack.
The management had dismissed the Malayalam professor from service with effect from September 1 in the name of “hurting the entire Muslim community” by preparing a question paper that allegedly blasphemed Prophet Muhammad. Activists of Islamist Popular Front of India had on July 4 cut off his right hand over this.
A letter sent by the Registrar of the university as an e-mail on the basis of a decision taken by the Syndicate reminded the college management that the expulsion of the professor was a violation of the rules. It charged the management with sacking the professor illegally and without giving him the opportunity or time for explaining his position.

Uttarkhand chief minister praises Prophet in book

The BJP chief minister of the northern Indian state of Uttarkhand has written a chapter described as a story of the greatness of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
In an e-mail and telephonic talk with Arab News, Officer on Special Duty Dr. Ashok Sharma said BJP Chief Minister Dr. Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank has written a chapter on Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in a book "Let's Learn from Stories" which consists of six stories for kids between the age group of 6 and 12 years.
Dr. Sharma said the author of the book, who is a journalist and editor of a Hindi newspaper, is a well-known author and poet. He has 32 fiction and nonfiction books to his credit translated into several Indian and foreign languages.

Pakistan film industry seeks Indian help

PANAJI: The Pakistan film industry is looking for help from Indian film-makers to get out of its “not-so-robust situation.”
An 18-member task force formed by Pakistan under the chairmanship of Nilofar Bakhtiar, Chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee for Culture and Tourism will visit Mumbai soon to meet film-makers.
The delegation will comprise leading film-makers and directors, said Ms. Bakhtiar here on Saturday.
She described Indian cinema as extremely advanced and proposed co-productions as well as training for Pakistani actors and directors.
Ms. Bakhtiar was here last week with a delegation of Censor Board members and film-makers for the four-day South Asia Film Festival (SAFF).

Malaysian school for pregnant teens gets its first pupils

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's first 'School of Hope' for pregnant teenagers began its work Monday with five girls joining it.
Four Malays and an ethnic Chinese students resumed their studies in Forms Four and Five at the school in Malacca state.
The teenagers, accompanied by their parents, were first required to make their formal application at the Malacca Islamic Religious Department before heading to the school.
The first to be seen was a young Chinese teenager who arrived with her parents at the school's dormitory, House of Hope.
On Sunday, Malacca Chief Minister Mohammed Ali Rustam said families of five pregnant teenagers had sought to enrol their daughters in the school here.
The five, aged between 16 and 17 years, were from Malacca, Johor, Negri Sembilan, Pahang states and Kuala Lumpur, the national capital.

THE PEOPLES Democratic Party ( PDP), the main Opposition party in Jammu and Kashmir, has accused the state government of sabotaging the all- party delegation’s visit by imposing a curfew on its eve. PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday also threatened to review the party’s participation in the team’s visit.
The state government rejected her allegations. Law minister Ali Muhammad Sagar described as “ baseless” the PDP’s claim that the Omar Abdullahled government was sabotaging the delegation’s visit. He said the PDP was desperate to regain power in the state.
“ It is using blood of Kashmiri youth for the purpose,” he alleged.
Sagar said it was surprising that the PDP was all praise for the all- party initiative two days ago but suddenly changed its stand.

SRINAGAR: Two militants and an army jawan were killed in an encounter in Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, officials said.
The encounter broke out in Paner forest in the periphery of Bandipora town, 55 kms from here, when a security search party confronted hiding militants.
They said two ultras and a jawan were killed in the gunbattle.
The identity and group affiliation of the slain militants could not be ascertained immediately as the operation was still on, the officials said.

Kolkata heightens security ahead of Ayodhya judgment

KOLKATA: With the verdict of the Babri Masjid title suit scheduled to be announced on September 24 and reports of the involvement of the Indian Mujahideen in the firing near the Jama Masjid in New Delhi earlier in the day, a high-level meeting was held here on Sunday to review the security situation in the city.
Although there is no specific threat, the security in certain areas is being strengthened. The number of Quick Response Teams (QRT) will be increased, Jawed Shamim, joint commissioner of police (headquarters) of the city police told journalists after the meeting.
Security checks after 9 p.m. will also be increased, he added.

US missile strike kills five militants in Pakistan

MIR ALI, Pakistan: A suspected US drone fired three missiles at a house in northwestern Pakistan, killing five alleged militants in the 14th such attack this month, the most intense barrage since the airstrikes began in 2004.
The house belonged to a local militant and was located in Datta Khel, a town in the North Waziristan tribal area that is controlled by insurgents who regularly launch cross-border attacks against NATO troops in Afghanistan, said intelligence officials on condition of anonymity Sunday because they were not authorized to speak with the media.
The exact identities of the dead militants were not known. US and Pakistani intelligence officials have said most of this month's strikes have targeted forces led by Jalaluddin Haqqani, a commander who was once supported by Pakistan and the US during the war against the Soviets in Afghanistan.

Britain raises Pakistan flood aid to 134 million pounds

LONDON: Britain said on Sunday it would more than double its aid to Pakistan to 134 million pounds in response to a United Nations appeal to help the flood-hit country recover.
Britain's International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell made the announcement, which takes the aid pledged by London to the equivalent of 210 million dollars or 160 million euros, at the UN in New York.
London had already committed 64 million pounds in aid and the new pledge was for 70 million pounds.
"Britain will continue its leading role, standing by Pakistan in its hour of need," said Mitchell. "Grave challenges lie ahead as people in Pakistan begin to recover from the floods."
He was one of 25 top ministers, including US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who gathered to pledge more aid for the crisis in Pakistan in response to a record two-billion-dollar appeal from the UN.

Colombia army kills 22 FARC rebels

BOGOTA: Colombia's defence minister says the military has killed at least 22 rebels in an air raid and ensuing ground assault near the border with Ecuador.
Rodrigo Rivera says the rebels of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, killed in Sunday's attack belonged to the same unit that killed eight police officers nine days earlier in the border town of San Miguel.
Authorities displayed bodies of the slain guerrillas to reporters in the nearby town of Puerto Assis.
The military did not offer details on the operation or say whether security forces suffered casualties.
The FARC has killed more than 30 police in attacks across Colombia since Juan Manuel Santos became president on Aug 7.

MALERKOTLA: A Trust run by a Muslim industrial house has restored a church targeted by fundamentalists in the wake of communal tensions sparked off by the alleged burning of the Quran.
Hars Charitable Trust, being run by Malerkotla-based Sohrab Group of Industries, has tried to undo the damage to the secular character of this Muslim-dominated town. Thanks to the efforts of Sohrab Group and Export House MD Amzad Ali, St Thomas Church targeted last Sunday night is now back to its glory.
''Getting the church to its original shape was most important to clear the blot on the face of this town,'' said Ali. He said by engaging the family-run trust, he carried out the repairs in consultation with the bishop and tried to make the church look more beautiful. Ali had lent a helping hand in its construction in 1990s.

Kuwait bans gatherings to curb Shiite-Sunni tensions

KUWAIT CITY: The Gulf state of Kuwait on Sunday banned public gatherings in a bid to contain rising tensions between Sunni and Shiite Muslims over inflammatory remarks by a Shiite activist in self-imposed exile.
"This is a (sectarian) rift and it must be stopped," head of the legal department at the interior ministry Brigadier Asaad al-Ruwayeh told a press conference as he read an official statement banning gatherings.
Any public gathering, procession or demonstration cannot be held without a prior approval from authorities, the statement said.
Ruwayeh said violators could face a two-year jail term, adding that the interior ministry is taking such measures to "safeguard security and stability of the country."

Imams asked not to make fiery speeches

In view of the impending judgement by the Allahabad High Court on the sensitive Ayodhya title suit on September 24, which is a Friday, leaders of key Muslim organisations have told the Imams to desist from giving any provocative speeches after the prayers at the mosques.
The organisations have also arrived at a consensus to abide by the court verdict so as to avoid any confusion over the issue within the community and maintain communal harmony. They also decided not to express any emotional rejoicing or protest over the Ayodhya title suit judgement.
“As the verdict is to be delivered on Friday, leaders of all the Muslim sects and imams across the country have been advised to react in a subdued manner and pray to God for peace. Imams have been told not to give any provocative speeches after the Friday prayers at the mosques,” Secretary and spokesperson of Jamiat-Ulama-I Hind Niaz Ahmed Farooqui said.

Ceasefire breach cases on the rise

Ahead of the annual congregation of world leaders at the UN General Assembly, there is increased infiltration into India from across the Line of Control (LoC), which, for the moment, defines the India-Pakistan border.
In the past 72 hours, as diplomatic channels in India and Pakistan were busy making last-minute preparations before heading to New York, the LoC witnessed a major breach of the ceasefire agreement in Poonch sector on two occasions.
The provocation first came from the Pakistani side of the border as forward Indian posts were repeatedly targeted in Balnoi and Jhallas areas of Poonch sector on Friday and Saturday night. The ceasefire violation was reported significantly on a day when diplomatic channels between the two countries witnessed a fresh war of words over the situation in Kashmir.

Overseas Kashmiris launch fund

A group of Kashmiris living overseas has launched a heritage fund to support families of Kashmiri Pandits in the Valley. “We have recently launched a Kashmir Heritage Fund which is aimed at supporting families of Kashmiri Pandits in the Valley and restoring our heritage sites there,” president of Kashmiri Overseas Association (KOA), California, Pradumon Tickoo said on Sunday.
KOA had organised two national camps this year and raised over $70,000 to held sponsor children’s education of the Kashmiri Pandits, providing medical assistance to needy families in India and to support the newly-launched Kashmir Heritage Fund.

It was the second time in his four-day state visit to Britain that the German-born Benedict had made reference to the Blitz, the attack on the British mainland by Nazi bombers and fighters during World War II, the anniversary of which is being commemorated in these days.
Newman, a 19th century convert from Anglicanism, was enormously influential in both the Anglican and Catholic churches. Sunday's beatification moved the former Anglican cleric a step closer to possible sainthood in the spiritual highlight of the pontiff's trip.

Women investors call for end to discrimination in granting education projects

DAMMAM: Several Saudi businesswomen and investors have urged the minister of education to order an investigation into “biased and disgraceful” conditions for women wanting to invest in the girls education sector.
They have called on Prince Faisal bin Abdullah to take steps to unify Education Ministry rules and regulations for both male and female investors and put an end to the so-called “segregation.”
They wanted an end to partisan attitudes at a time when Saudi society was opening up and businesswomen were coming forward to invest in the girls education sector.
A number of legal experts also pointed out that certain ministry conditions that allegedly contravene the Kingdom’s labor law should be changed, Al-Watan daily said in a recent report.

Imam blames Wakf Board for lack of CCTVs

THERE’S not a single close circuit TV camera mounted at Jama Masjid and electronic surveillance of the sensitive, congested area is non- existent.
This would make it all the more difficult to track down the bikers who brazenly went on a shooting spree outside the shrine’s Gate No. 3 on Sunday morning.
Not that the area never had such cameras, but none of these were working for six- odd months and the Jama Masjid administration, fed up after making repeated appeals to the Delhi Wakf Board, had dismounted the cameras, packed them in boxes and sent them back.
The Delhi Wakf Board had mounted the cameras to keep vigil over the area. The Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, said: “ We had repeatedly told senior Wakf officials that the area needed new cameras. If the existing ones couldn’t be repaired, they ought to have been replaced.

A 3D film on Qutub Minar to ‘ educate’ visitors

A FEW months from now, visitors to the Qutub Minar will enjoy the monument through a 3D film before beginning the actual tour of the site.
The film will be screened at the tourist interpretation centre of the 12th century monument. The 15- minute movie, which is to be commissioned by the Archaeological Survey of India ( ASI), is the first of its kind for any monument in the country.
The movie will educate visitors on the history of the structures located inside the complex. This will help them gain a better understanding of the monument when they actually visit it.
Till now, this ‘ education’ was imparted using brochures and audio- guides. “ The Qutub Minar complex houses a variety of structures and monuments. A 3D film will enhance the visitors’ visual experience. That’s why we decided to adopt the technology,” an ASI official said.

500 Indian Sikh yatrees to arrive today

LAHORE: As many as 500 Sikh yatrees from India will arrive at the Wahga Railway Station by the Samjotha Express today (Monday). The yatrees are visiting Pakistan to observe the death anniversary (Joti Jot) of Guru Nanak Dev Jee. The main function will be held at Kirtarpur district, Narowal, sources said. Shrine Additional Secretary Zahid Bokhari, members of the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee and other officials will receive the Sikh yatrees. Evacuee Trust Property Board Chairman Syed Asif Hashmi has finalised the security arrangements and accommodation for the yatrees.

Top Mideast officials fly to US as peace talks crisis looms

JERUSALEM: Top Israeli and Palestinian officials headed on Sunday to the United States where they were expected to seek ways to break a deadlock over settlements which is threatening to sabotage peace talks.
Israeli President Shimon Peres left shortly after midnight for a four-day visit to coincide with the UN General Assembly meeting in New York, and a few hours later, Defence Minister Ehud Barak set off for top-level talks in Washington.
Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas, currently in Amman, was also to fly to New York on Sunday evening for the annual sitting, and later in the week was expected to hold talks with US President Barack Obama, media reports said.

Afghan election less bloody than 2009: NATO

KABUL: The number of insurgent attacks during Afghanistan’s parliamentary vote was significantly lower than during last year’s presidential poll, and far fewer were killed and injured, NATO said Sunday. NATO figures showed that a total of 485 violent incidents took place on Saturday, when Afghans voted amid Taliban threats to attack polling stations, election workers, security forces and any civilians who dared to vote. Those figures included 294 insurgent attacks, NATO said, which compares favourably with the violence that marred the presidential poll on August 20 last year, when there were 479 insurgent attacks, ISAF spokesman Lieutenant Colonel John Dorrian said. A final death toll for Saturday was not finalised, but NATO said at least 22 people were killed, compared to 57 on election day last year, which was widely characterised as Afghanistan’s most violent day since the current war against the Taliban began in late 2001.

LAHORE – There has virtually been mushroom growth over the decades, years and centuries in every spectrum of life. This is also true about the print as well as electronic media. As a matter of fact, about a decade or so ago, there was only one government-controlled TV channel. Now the number of TV channels in the private sector is rapidly growing.The newspapers have also been enormously increased to the extent that it is very difficult for the common man, nay also the journalists, to remember all the newspapers being published daily in the provincial capital - since there are morningers as well as eveningers.While searching and scanning through various reference books to find out what Lahore was in the past prior to traversing through the city presently, this scribe was surprised to find out that only a little more a century ago, 1915 to be exact, there were 23 newspapers which in those days enjoyed circulation of 1,500 or above.

Ban calls for 'urgent' global response to Pakistan disaster

UNITED NATIONS: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for an “urgent” global response to the Pakistan floods on Sunday as he opened an international ministerial meeting on the disaster.
The meeting, which brought together US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and about 25 other top ministers, sought extra resources for the stricken country after the United Nations issued a record two billion dollar emergency appeal.
Clinton said that the United States has now allotted about 340 million dollars in disaster relief to Pakistan. Britain on Sunday doubled its aid to about 200 million dollars and the European Union said it has now contributed 315 million dollars.

Philippine troops kill wanted Abu Sayyaf militant

Philippine troops clashed with Abu Sayyaf gunmen and killed a long-wanted militant who helped in the 2001 kidnapping of three American and 17 Filipino tourists and the takeover of a hospital.
Abdukarim Sali was killed before dawn in a clash with troops and police in Lower Mangas village on Basilan island’s Lantawan township — a stronghold of the al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf, regional military commander Lt. Gen. Benjamin Dolorfino said.
The other militants fled, leaving Sali’s body, an M16 rifle and grenade launcher, ammunition and cell phones behind.
The government offered a $7,700 bounty for the capture or death of Sali, who has been accused of helping kidnap three American and 17 mostly Chinese Filipino tourists in May 2001 from the Dos Palmas resort in western Palawan province.

Activists warn of diplomatic meltdown in Sudan

CAIRO — Preparations for Sudan’s crucial referendum on southern independence are so far behind schedule that urgent international diplomatic intervention is the only guarantee to prevent renewed civil war, Sudan activists warned on Sunday.
A 2005 peace agreement ended a 21-year civil war between Sudan’s mostly Muslim north and predominantly animist and Christian south that left some 2 million people dead. The deal set up a transitional unity government as well as an autonomous government in the south, and called for a referendum — slated for Jan. 9, 2011 — on independence for southern Sudan.
But activists from the Sudan 365 campaign warned that with around 100 days to go before the vote, there is still a slew of outstanding issues to be resolved.

‘America agreed to take 100,000 Palestinian refugees’

JERUSALEM: Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Sunday that the United States had agreed to accept some 100,000 Palestinian refugees within the framework of an eventual Middle East peace deal, media reported.
Washington had agreed to absorb and give citizenship to 100,000 refugees, while Israel would accept less than 20,000, Israeli media quoted Olmert as telling a conference.
"The numbers discussed were below 20,000, but this would require an end to the conflict and a Palestinian announcement that they would not make any more demands," the Ynet website quoted him as saying.
Olmert was speaking at a conference in Tel Aviv organized by the Geneva Initiative, an Israeli-Palestinian group that aims to show a peace accord is possible.

Germany: 4 die after blast, shooting

BERLIN: Four people died and a policeman was seriously wounded in a town in southwestern Germany on Sunday, after an explosion in an apartment building and a shooting in the neighboring hospital that authorities believe are linked, a prosecutor said.
Two people were found dead in an apartment building that burst into flames after an explosion Sunday afternoon, Loerrach prosecutor Dieter Inhofer told ZDF public television.
Another woman, allegedly armed with a weapon, was seen running from the blast into the neighboring St. Elisabeth hospital, where she reportedly opened fire, killing a member of the hospital staff, Inhofer said.

CAIRO: A top Hamas security official was arrested at Cairo airport for using falsified travel documents, Egyptians officials said Sunday.
Mohammed Dababish's relatives said he was returning from a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia when he was stopped.
Dababish is a top official in Hamas' internal security unit, which oversees intelligence matters in Gaza. Hamas officials declined to comment.
Egypt has arrested a string of Hamas figures since one of its soldiers was killed in a border shooting early this year, including the son of a Hamas Cabinet minister last month.
