‘Ambedkar a nominee of the Muslim League’
By Iftikhar Gilani
27 Jun, 2010
NEW DELHI: An Indian scholar on Saturday revealed that author of the
Indian Constitution and famous Dalit leader Dr B R Ambedkar was in fact a
nominee of the Muslim League in the Council of States (Upper House) of united
India’s Constituent Assembly.
Participating in a discussion on a roadmap for the political
empowerment of Indian Muslims, noted historian and former vice-chancellor of the
Agra University, Professor Manzoor Ahmed said the Congress had refused to
support Ambedkar’s candidature for the upper house.
Tracing history, Ahmed, also a former inspector general of police in
Uttar Pradesh, said the Muslim League leader Hussain Shaheed Suharwardi had
nominated Dalit icon Ambedkar and a tribal leader Joginder Nath Mandal as
candidates for the Council of States from Bengal at the behest of the
Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. “Both seats belonged to Muslim League,” he
said.
The scholar also blamed the Congress party’s Muslim face, Maulana
Abul Kalam Azad, for the political disempowerment of Muslims in northern
India.
Professor Ahmed claimed that soon after the partition, Azad chaired a
Muslim Political Convention in Lucknow at the Rufai Aam Club. He asked Muslim
representatives to renounce community-based politics. He even took oath from
them to stay away from community parties and urged them to join the mainstream
political parties. Only a south Indian Muslim, Muhammad Ismail, walked out of
the meeting.
He later founded the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) in Kerala, a
step that helped Muslims to share power in the successive provincial government
unlike in northern India, where they were left to the mercy and whims of
mainstream political parties.

Mutiny charges framed against 667 Bangladesh border
guards
Jun 27, 2010
DHAKA: A Bangladeshi special court framed mutiny charges against 667
troopers of the BDR border guards for the 2009 carnage that killed 57 army
officers, including its chief Major General Shakil Ahmed.
The Special Court-5 headed by BDR Director General Mohammad Rafiqul
Islam framed the mutiny charges against 667 BDR jawans of 24 Rifle Battalion
linked to the February 25-26 carnage at its Pilkhana headquarters in the
capital, the Star Online said.
Later the court adjourned the trial proceedings till September 4. Of
the total accused, 29 BDR troopers pleaded guilty, the report said.
A total of 74 people including 57 army officers were brutally killed
during the bloodbath at its headquarters at Pilkhana in 2009.
In November last year, Bangladesh set up six "special courts" headed
by its then Director General Major General Mainul Islam to try the soldiers
linked to the February 25-26 mutiny, just two months after the installation of
the new government following the landmark December 29, 2008 parliamentary
polls.
The government had decided to try the suspected massacre culprits
under the fast track 'Speedy Trial Tribunal and others who extended support to
the mutiny but did not take part in the killings under the BDR Act.
The Speedy Trial Tribunal will try the suspects under civil Penal
Code, which prescribed capital punishment for offenses like murder while the BDR
Act suggested the maximum seven years of imprisonment for breaching discipline
in command chain or major service irregularities.
Over 200 border guards so far have already been jailed for various
terms under the BDR Act in six special courts headed by the BDR
chief.
Last week, the government decided to bring about a key amendment to
expedite the trial of mutineers who did not directly take part in the
killings.
According to Abvul Kalam Azad, the Prime Minister's press secretary,
said under the existing law, the BDR chief needed to head all the six
paramilitary special courts set up last year to try the ordinary rebellious
border guards.
Under the proposed amendment, he said, director level officials of
the border force, who generally holds the rank of an army colonel, could head
the courts instead of the director general himself.
Reforms approved by the government led to renaming of the
paramilitary force as Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) with a new combat
uniform.

Palestinian girls race through gender
barrier
Jun 27, 2010
RAMALLAH (WEST BANK): Palestinian women are speeding into the record
books by competing in the first all-female car racing team — the Speed Sisters.
Along the way, they're crashing through another gender barrier in this
conservative Muslim society. The eight women have entered a popular race called
'Speed Test.' Souped-up cars race around a track, weaving their way around
obstacles and spinning circles around others.
"I love sports that are tough and dangerous, because I am a dangerous
woman," said Nour Dawood, 20, after a race this week outside the West Bank city
of Ramallah. She wore a yellow-and-black racing suit, sunglasses and a helmet as
she leaned against her car, her curly hair pushed back into a ponytail. Around
her, drivers revved their engines.
Arabic music pounded out of loudspeakers. A group of fans crowded
around the track to watch, including a small contingent of women with large
sunglasses. It's another step for Palestinian women who have been claiming more
positions of influence in an otherwise still male-dominated society. This year,
the first female Palestinian governor was appointed to oversee the West Bank
district of Ramallah. The mayor of the district's main city is a woman, as are
four ministers in the Palestinian cabinet.
Speed Test began in the West Bank in 2005, as violence between Israel
and the Palestinians began petering out. Races take place throughout the
territory that is ruled by Israel, with Palestinians administering parts of
it.

Pak considers granting India most-favoured nation
status
Jun 27 2010
Toronto : In a move that could bolster the trade and economic
relations between the two countries, Islamabad is considering reciprocating the
long-unrequited Indian gesture of treating it as a most-favoured nation
(MFN).
In the recent foreign secretary-level talks between the two countries
in Islamabad, Pakistani officials had indicated their willingness to replace the
policy of keeping a restricted “positive” list of goods for India-Pakistan trade
with a more accommodative “negative list” approach.
This policy change would inevitably lead to India becoming an MFN to
Pakistan.
Although India has treated Pakistan as an MFN for many years,
Islamabad has been unwilling to reciprocate that measure.

The latest incident of a rampaging mob — comprising mostly youths —
attacking CRPF personnel in Sopore to protest the killing of a suspected

Only a small number of Muslims in Australia wear the loose garment
that covers a woman from head to foot, including the face.
But Reverend Nile believes Australia should follow the example of

Vowing to support weak governments in Afghanistan, Pakistan, the
Sahel, Somalia and Yemen fight terrorism, G8 leaders said they would step up
efforts to promote the rule of law.
“Terrorist groups and other criminal organizations tend to flourish
where governments lack the capacity and resiliency to address security

US: Turkey must demonstrate commitment to West
By DESMOND BUTLER
Jun 27, 2010
WASHINGTON: The United States is warning Turkey that it is alienating
US supporters and needs to demonstrate its commitment to partnership with the
West.
The remarks by Philip Gordon, the Obama administration's top diplomat
on European affairs, were a rare admonishment of a crucial NATO
ally.
"We think Turkey remains committed to NATO, Europe and the United
States, but that needs to be demonstrated," Gordon told The Associated Press in
an interview. "There are people asking questions about it in a way that is new,
and that in itself is a bad thing that makes it harder for the United States to
support some of the things that Turkey would like to see us support." Gordon
cited Turkey's vote against a US-backed United Nations Security Council
resolution on new sanctions against Iran and noted Turkish rhetoric after
Israel's deadly assault on a Gaza-bound flotilla last month. The Security
Council vote came shortly after Turkey and Brazil, to Washington's annoyance,
had brokered a nuclear fuel-swap deal with Iran as an effort to delay or avoid
new sanctions.

Judge orders father to return girl to mother
Jun 27, 2010
MADINAH: A judge has ruled that a father must return his young
daughter to his ex-wife. Three-year-old Lana went missing more than a week ago
and her mother had been searching for her since then.
Madinah authorities had been looking for the 30-year-old ex-husband
who was accused by the mother of kidnapping the girl and her nanny from the
custody of the mother.
The judge convinced the father to return the child to her mother
until she reaches the marriage age. The father said he wanted to take the
custody because the mother is a scholarship student abroad.
The judge forced him to return the child to the mother, and ordered
the child to remain in the custody of her maternal grandmother the next time her
mother travels abroad for studies.

US to Karzai: New general won't alter Afghan

KABUL, Afghanistan: America's top military officer assured President
Hamid Karzai on Saturday that newly chosen NATO commander Gen. David Petraeus
would pursue the policies of his ousted predecessor, whom the Afghan leader
warmly praised for reducing civilian casualties.
Karzai's emphasis on preventing civilian deaths and injuries could
make it difficult for NATO to relax rules of fighting that some US troops say
give the battlefield advantage to the Taliban. For now, however, no changes have
been proposed, said a spokesman for visiting Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the
Joint Chiefs of Staff.

‘I Cautioned Against Afghan Pullout’
Jun 26th, 2010
A powerful US Senator has said that he personally cautioned against
setting a date for withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan but asserted that US
President Barack Obama is committed to the drawdown of his forces from the war
torn country beginning July 2011. “Was it a mistake for the President to set a
date?” Senator John Kerry, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee,
was asked on the popular Charlie Rose Show.
“Well, you know, not if you can have those other ingredients working
correctly and in place. Right now we don’t. I personally cautioned against a
date simply because I think that it was very difficult for people in Afghanistan
at this current moment to, at the same time as we’re setting it, accept the
notion that they’ve got a future, that there’s a prospect for them of security
and safety and sufficient success,” Mr Kerry said in response.

J & K rallyists negotiate road that Akbar
took
By Arjun Sharma
Jun 27, 2010
MORE THAN 30 Indian motoring enthusiasts participated in the ‘ Mughal
Rally- 2010’ — a two- leg race through the Kashmir valley — which ended in
Srinagar on Saturday.
The event, organised by the J& K tourism department and the
Himalayan Motor Sports Association to boost the region’s waning tourist
potential, kicked off on Friday as participants made their way in specially
designed SUVs from Srinagar to Jammu.
On Saturday, the return lap back to Srinagar took the motorists
through the challenging Mughal road — named after the eponymous Mughal emperor
Akbar who used it to reach the Kashmir valley four centuries ago.
While the road proved difficult in stretches, the racers glimpsed the
scenic snow- capped mountains and lush- green forests of the Pir Panjal ranges —
strategically important to the troubled region’s security forces.
