Rukhsana now fights for her love

RUKHSANA Kausar fought a terrorist last September to save her
parents.
Now, she is fighting her parents for the sake of her
love.
The 22- year- old fell in love with her personal security officer (
PSO) Kabir Hussain and married him on May 26, against her parents’
wishes.
“ My family wanted me to marry a cousin. But those people had always
looked down on me before I got the awards. But when my name appeared in the
papers, they suddenly developed an interest in me,” she
said.
She was awarded the Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Award and the Kirti
Chakra for her bravery.
After Rukhsana snatched Abu Osama’s automatic rifle and sprayed on
him, the Lashkar- e- Tayyeba ( LeT) had vowed to avenge Abu’s death. The
terrorist had entered her house and was thrashing her parents when she came upon
them.
The police then arranged for her security and moved the family from
their home in Upper Shahdra of Rajouri district to the police lines. Kabir was
then assigned as her PSO. Rukhsana, who was given a constable’s post after the
incident, said from her home in the police lines in Rajouri: “ I love him and
cannot live without him.
“ He protected me when the terrorists had promised to avenge Abu’s
death,” she said. “ Is it a crime to marry the man you love?” Her parents locked
her up in a room for two days after they came to know of her union. The police
had to interfere because she was absent from duty and freed
her.
“ My parents beat me up and asked me to forget Kabir as he was
already married and has a child. But I can’t forget him,” she
said.
Kabir said he married Rukhsana because no one else would have dared
to marry her because of the terrorists’ threat. “ I have done nothing wrong
because I got permission from my first wife,” he said. “ I want to live with her
but her parents aren’t allowing her to move out.” Rukhsana’s parents have sought
the help of elders to sort things out.
“ As Rukhsana has not lodged a complaint we cannot take
action.
If she lodges a complaint, we will look into it,” Rajouri senior
superintendent of police R. K. Jala said.

Raza work fetches record Rs 16.3cr

It's proving to be quite a scorching summer for Indian art. Syed
Haider Raza became India's priciest modern artist on Thursday when a seminal
work by the 88-year-old sold for a whopping Rs 16.3 crore ($3.49 million) at a
Christie's auction in London.
Just two summers back, a work by Francis Newton Souza had set the
record for the most expensive piece of modern art by notching up $2.5 million or
Rs 10.5 crore. Since then, prices of Indian art had crashed though the fall in
contemporary art was much more drastic than the moderns.
Aptly, it's the country's two best-known masters who are making the
meltdown seem like a distant memory.
"Strength is coming back to the art market. We are also seeing a lot
of new bidders across the world from Hong Kong, the UAE and the US," said Yamini
Mehta, director of the contemporary Indian art department at Christie's.
Just a day earlier, the London-based auction house put over 500 works
by Souza under the hammer. They fetched $7.9 million, more than double the
pre-sale estimate. Ninety-seven per cent of the Souza lots found buyers, with a
top price of $1.3 million paid for the 1962 oil, 'Red Curse', painted on black
satin while the artist was living in London. The dark 6-foot-high mage of a
female nude being attacked by a snarling, many-eyed beast was sold to a European
buyer.
The price for Raza's work 'Saurashtra' wasn't out of the blue. Raza
considers it to be one of the 10 most important works he has done in his life.
Known for his bindu art, Raza was a founder member of the Bombay Progressive
Artist's group along with Souza. He first came to prominence in Paris where he
moved in 1950.
Painted in 1983, 'Saurashtra' belongs to a key period in Raza's
career when, after many years working within the styles of the Ecole de Paris
and Abstract Expressionism, he began to integrate vital elements of his
childhood and heritage into his paintings. This particular work depicts the
beauty of the Gujarati coastal landscape.

Surrogate mother for Osama Bin Laden's IVF

THIS is the British mum set to give birth to Osama Bin Laden's
grandchild.
Louise Pollard, 24, is acting as a surrogate mother for the al-Qaeda
warlord's son Omar Bin Laden, The Sun can reveal.
She is undergoing fertility treatment, thought to be IVF, in an
attempt to conceive using Omar's sperm and eggs from his British wife Jane Felix
Browne.
The Qatar-based pair - who are desperate to have a child but cannot
on their own - contacted Louise through a surrogacy
website.
And they have agreed for her to carry their
baby.
If the bid is successful it will mean terror chief Bin Laden having a
BRITISH grandchild.
Two attempts at conception, in early April and last month, are known
to have failed.
A third was made earlier this month. And personal assistant Louise,
of Bristol, is due to have a pregnancy test any day.
If it proves negative a fourth attempt may be made using Omar's sperm
and Louise's eggs.
Scrap metal dealer Omar, 29, has a six-year-old son from a previous
marriage.
But after tying the knot in 2007 with 54-year-old gran Jane, of
Moulton, Cheshire, he is keen to have another.
Omar, the fourth eldest child of the world's most wanted terrorist,
has had several visa applications to live in Britain
rejected.
His hand may be strengthened if he becomes the father of a British
child. But Home Office sources said he would not automatically be granted
entry.
He is said to be "deeply saddened" Louise has yet to become
pregnant.
Omar and Jane have been based in Qatar for two years and it is
thought Louise's treatment took place in the United Arab
Emirates.
Louise, who has been a surrogate mum twice before and has a
three-year-old son of her own, told pals she has made three trips to Dubai since
the beginning of April.
A friend said Omar and Jane have agreed to pay her expenses of up to
£10,000, the UK's legal maximum. Included in the figure are her flights and
accommodation in Dubai.
Louise, thought to be Britain's youngest surrogate mum, appeared on
ITV's This Morning yesterday to talk about her
conceptions.
She did not reveal the identity of the couple she is currently
involved with but spoke of the "emotional bond" she forms with childless
couples.
She added: "I have my next surrogacy lined up. I am using the
mother's eggs and the husband's sperm but I am not going to rule out using my
own eggs." Her previous surrogate births were for a London couple. She underwent
artificial insemination at home in July 2007 using a kit given to the pair by a
clinic.
Louise, married to soldier Damian, 24, had a girl in April 2008 and a
boy in July last year.
Omar, whose mum is Bin Laden's first wife Najwa, met Jane on a riding
trip to Egypt's Pyramids in March 2007.
He became the gran's sixth husband when they wed a month later in two
Islamic ceremonies in Egypt and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The Sun broke the story of
the marriage to the world.
Multiple sclerosis sufferer Jane has three adult children from
previous relationships.
She converted to Islam before meeting Omar and now uses the name
Zaina Mohamad Al-Sabah Bin Laden.
Omar, whose middle name is Ossama, insists he has had no contact with
his dad since before the 9/11 attacks in 2001.

Will the Kingdom ever have sports centers for
women?

RIYADH: During a recent meeting to pore over the budget for the
General Presidency of Youth Welfare (GPYW), the Shoura Council discussed sports
centers for women, the establishment of which the council had recommended two
years ago.
Meanwhile, a GPYW source said the government department is to
establish five women sports centers by 2011 in the Kingdom’s main cities.
Another source, however, debunked the claim and said women sports centers do not
figure high on the GPYW’s agenda.
Conservative elements in the Kingdom, which not only include men but
also women, are reluctant to endorse the establishment of sports centers for
women. These people feel such venues encourage young girls to venture out from
their homes for reasons they feel are unnecessary.

Malaysia Mosques nationwide to be turned into community
centres

PUTRAJAYA: Mosques nationwide will be turned into one-stop centres
where Muslims can go, not only to worship and deepen their knowledge on Islam,
but also seek advice and counselling from family and religious experts in times
of trouble.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir
Baharom said one-stop centres in mosques would also be equipped with libraries,
computer facilities, classes for adults and children as well as shelter or
temporary accommodation for travellers.
“It is also the government’s intention to use mosques to unite
Muslims and this can be achieved if its management remain independent,
professional and free from political elements,” he said Friday at the opening of
the Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin mosque.

Both Congressman Keith Ellison [DFL-MN] and Andre Carson [D-IN] are
scheduled to speak at the annual convention of the Islamic Society of North
America [ISNA].
ISNA was named as an unindicted co-conspirator in the United States'
most extensive prosecution of terror funding, U.S. vs. Holy Land Foundation
[HLF], which proved the phony Islamic charity HLF, gave at least $12 million
dollars to the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas.
ISNA has credibly been reported as having substantial funding from
Saudi Arabia, "Some of ISNA's own members have raised concerns on another issue:
large donations from Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia follows an extreme version of
Islam known as Wahhabism, and questions continue to swirl around Saudi
connections to terrorism, including the attack on 9-11. A videotape obtained by
Eyewitness News shows a 1994 ISNA convention where one member questioned why the
organization accepted more than $500,000 dollars in Saudi donations. "I don't
think Saudi Arabia is a good model for one of the largest
organizations."

Witness in Shahid Azmi murder case gets threat

MUMBAI: A day after the prosecution's key witness in the Shahid Azmi
murder case, Inder Singh, received a threat call, police is now keeping a vigil
outside his house and has tracked the call to Gujarat.
Singh, who is lawyer Azmi's peon, is the sole eyewitness who saw
three persons enter Azmi's office posing as clients and shot him dead on
February 11.
The trio-Devendra Jagtap, Pintu Dagle and Hasmukh Solanki-have been
arrested by the crime branch of the city police.
On Tuesday night, Singh claimed he received an anonymous call
threatening him. The caller allegedly said he was aware of Singh's whereabouts
and would fix him soon.

Pakistan govt can bring Aafia back, says US
lawyer

The American lawyer of Dr Aafia Siddiqui has claimed that if the
government of Pakistan decides that it wants Dr Siddiqui back, she will be
repatriated to Pakistan the very next day.
The lawyer, Tina Foster, also accused the US government of misleading
the people and the government of Pakistan that Dr Siddiqui could not be
repatriated before her sentencing by the court.
“Dr Siddiqui’s best chance for repatriation to Pakistan is before
August 16 when a US judge is expected to sentence her to life-imprisonment,
provided the Pakistani government put diplomatic pressure to get its citizen
back,” Dr Siddiqui’s lawyer said at a news conference at the Karachi Press Club
on Thursday evening.

Faraz Siddiqui for the first time has claimed spot along with two Nepalis in the
finals of the 2010 US State Department’s ‘Democracy Video Challenge ’.
This challenge is in its second year and drew nearly 700 entries this
year. Contestants from 83 countries created short films on themes based upon the
phrase ‘Democracy is…’ the blank to be filled according to the theme of each
contestant.
The three finalists made following short films for the event; Faraz
Siddiqui from Pakistan, democracy is a message by the
people.
All the short films can now be viewed on you tube. Internet users

Hamas rejects Israel-approved snack foods for
Gaza

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip: The Hamas government said Thursday it will not
let newly approved food items into the Gaza Strip as long as Israel maintains
its blockade of the territory.
Israel slightly eased the much-criticized blockade on Wednesday by
permitting snacks, spices and some other previously banned food items into Gaza.
The order was symbolic at best, leaving a ban in place on desperately needed
construction and industrial materials.
Hamas Economics Minister Ziad Al-Zaza said the government would not
allow imports of potato chips, soft drinks and fruit salad from neighboring
Israel. He said Gaza's own factories could produce these goods if Israel would
only allow in raw materials.
"Gaza does not need soft drinks, soda and fruit
salad.

DUBAI: Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has dismissed the new
round of sanctions passed against his country
by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as unworthy of detailed
comment.
“Those who possess atomic bombs themselves, both use and stockpile
the nuclear weapons while threatening the others with them, now resort to the
pretext that Iran might in the future manufacture atomic bombs and pass
resolutions against us every now and then,” said Mr. Ahmadinejad on Wednesday
during his visit to Tajikistan.

Muslims asked to help dispel doubts about Islam

Muslim intellectuals from across the world have asked people from the
community to be more involved in public life in an effort to dispel
misconceptions about Islam.
Experts at an international conference on 'Islam and Media in Europe:
How to Face Islamophobia?' held in Lille, France, recommended establishing
dialogue with intellectuals, opinion leaders and media professionals in Western
countries.
Such dialogue should be initiated by institutions working for
dissemination of information in the Muslim world and human rights organisations,
with an aim to end the adverse impact of 'Islamphobia'.
The conference called for a more active role of information and
cultural advisors in embassies of Muslim countries in Western
nations.
Participants also asked Muslim entrepreneurs to invest in media
institutions, which can counter smear campaigns against

US missile strike kills 9 in northwest Pak

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, (Pakistan): A volley of US missiles killed nine
alleged militants in an extremist stronghold of northwest Pakistan on Friday,
the second such strike in less than 12 hours, intelligence officials said.
The Obama administration regards missile attacks as a key weapon
against al-Qaida and the Taliban close to the Afghan border. Earlier this month,
al-Qaida's reputed No. 3 official, Mustafa al-Yazid, was killed in a similar
strike in the North Waziristan region.
Six missiles were fired in Friday's attack on a house in a village
close to the border, said two intelligence officers. They spoke on condition of
anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media. The identities
of the nine suspected militants were not immediately known.

Australian woman freed, leaves Yemen with her
kids

SAN'A, Yemen — Yemen on Friday released an Australian woman detained
as part of an investigation into al-Qaida's increased activity in the country
and allowed her to fly home with her two children, her lawyer and security
officials said.
Shyloh Giddins was among several foreigners taken into custody during
the probe. She was initially placed on house arrest May 14, along with her two
children, and later held in a prison. She was never charged with anything after
her detention, according to her lawyers.
After top-level Australia-Yemen contacts to resolve the issue,
Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said on Tuesday that Yemen had agreed
to release the woman and deport her and the children by the end of the
week.

Sudanese killers of US envoy 'escape from
prison'

KHARTOUM — Four Sudanese Islamists sentenced to hang for the 2008
murder of a US diplomat have escaped from prison, a security source told AFP on
Friday.
"It's true. The four men escaped yesterday (Thursday) from the Kober
jail" in northern Khartoum, the source said, on condition of anonymity,
referring to a report in the pro-government daily Al-Rai
Al-Aam.
A US embassy spokesman said "we have read those reports and are
reviewing them.'
John Granville, 33, worked for the US Agency for International
Development (USAID). He and his driver, Abdel Rahman Abbas, 40, were fatally
shot in their car on January 1, 2008 as they returned from a New Year's Eve
celebration.
Sudanese authorities charged five young Islamists with the double
murder, of whom four were handed the death penalty last
year.

Iraq: Car bomb kills 2 Americans, 3 Iraqis

BAGHDAD – A car bomb struck a joint U.S.-Iraqi military convoy north
of Baghdad on Friday, killing at least five people, including two American
troops.
Iraqi officials said a suicide attacker hit a patrol of Humvees and
Stryker vehicles in central Jalula, about 80 miles (125 kilometers) northeast of
Baghdad, not far from the Iranian border.
American forces responsible for operations in Iraq's north confirmed
the casualties in Diyala province. Names of the casualties were not released,
pending notification of family members.
They said three Iraqis, including one police officer, were also
killed, and about 22 were wounded in the blast.

Seventeen killed in southern Kyrgyz violence

Kyrgyzstan - At least 17 people were killed on Friday when ethnic
conflict flared in Kyrgyzstan's second-largest city Osh, the worst outbreak of
violence in the Central Asian state since the president was overthrown in
April.
The interim government in Kyrgyzstan, which hosts U.S. and Russian
military bases, declared a state of emergency in four southern regions after
hundreds of youths battled with guns and steel bars, setting shops ablaze in the
city.
The government, led by Roza Otunbayeva, sent troops and armored
vehicles to quell gangs roaming the streets with sticks, stones and petrol bombs
after a night of violence.
"Destructive forces, together with criminal elements, are trying to
escalate inter-ethnic conflict," Ruslan Kazakbayev, the country's interim
foreign minister, said during a summit of regional leaders in neighboring
Uzbekistan.

15 killed in drone strike in Pakistan

Islamabad: The toll in the US drone strike in Pakistan's North
Waziristan tribal area has risen to 15 while 10 were wounded in the incident on
Friday, media reports said.
The drone fired four missiles at a house in Datta Khel area, killing
four people on the spot, Xinhua quoted a news channel as
saying.
The injured were rushed to a hospital as 11 people succumbed to
injuries later, the private Geo News channel reported, citing local sources.
Several others were in critical condition.
Meanwhile, drone flights are still hovering over the area creating
panic among the locals, the report said.

Law in the USA and Suicide Bomb the Gap – are getting up plenty of noses inside
and outside the punk scene
With Green Day's American Idiot being reimagined as a Broadway
musical and the 1970s bunch largely comfortable in middle age, punk rock is less
a form of rebellion than an integral part of the entertainment industry. Parents
of young punk bands are probably just happy their boys have a hobby that takes
them away from the television or the Xbox. So it is both surprising and pleasing
to find a punk band who can still upset all and sundry: punk purists, family,
rightwingers, leftwingers, those without a sense of humour – and because they
follow Islam – their fellow Muslims.

Air India Kanishka bombing report next week

TORONTO: Exactly 25 years after the Air India Kanishka bombing in
1985, the Canadian commission which investigated the tragedy will table its
report on Thursday.
Former Canadian chief justice John Major, who was appointed to head
the commission in May 2006, will present his voluminous report on the failures
which led to the bombing of the Montreal-to-Delhi Kanishka flight 182 off the
Irish coast June 23, 1985, killing all 329 people on aboard.
Another bomb, meant for another Air India flight, also went off at
Tokyo airport the same day, killing two baggage handlers.
As the Air India trial court said, both the bombs were loaded at
Vancouver airport in two unaccompanied suitcases which were later transferred to
the connecting Air India flight and Tokyo-bound flight at Toronto airport.

BISHKEK, KYRGYZSTAN: Riots in south Kyrgyzstan have killed at least
12 people and injured more than 120, officials said on Friday, as fears grew of
a new cycle of violence in the Central Asian nation.
Witnesses in Osh, the country's second-largest city, reported hearing

9/11: Ground Zero workers to get $712 million as
compensation

NEW YORK: Workers, firefighters and police officers at the Ground
Zero who suffered injuries and health problems during the clean up of the World
Trade Centre wreckage, will receive USD 712 million as compensation.
An earlier package proposed in March of USD 657 million was rejected
by judge Alvin Hellerstein as inadequate who described the workers as "heroes".
The American media reported that part of this boost came because
lawyers for the workers agreed to reduce their fees they were charging their
clients.
"There is no better deal," said Hellerstein, a Manhattan Federal
Judge, according to the New York Post.
"This is the deal that people have to decide to accept or reject.
It's time that this lawsuit ended," he said, describing the case as a "terrible
tear in the social fabric of this country".

WASHINGTON: Indian investigators were given access to LeT operative
David Headley aka Daood Gilani for seven days over the course of which they
questioned him without any restrictions, the Obama administration disclosed on
Thursday, pushing back at reports that Washington was being dodgy in cooperating
with India on the Mumbai 26/11 terrorist attack.
However, "to protect the confidentiality of the investigations being
conducted by both India and the United States, both countries have agreed not to
disclose the contents of the interviews," the US Justice Department said in a
statement. Various versions of what Headley told the investigators have appeared
in the Indian media, none of which have been officially authenticated by
authorities.

European Union seeks to open sea route to Gaza

JERUSALEM: The European Union wants to help open a sea route to Gaza
and to revive and expand its role at the land crossings into the area,
diplomatic sources told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday.
Its Foreign Affairs Council plans to debate the matter on Monday,
when ministers from the EU's 27 countries convene in Luxembourg for their
monthly meeting.
The debate comes amidst sharp international criticism of Israel's
three-year policy of closing Gaza's land passages to all but humanitarian goods.
"The EU has called for an immediate and sustained opening of the Gaza
crossings and they will look into options of how the EU could facilitate this,"
a council spokeswoman told the Post.

Mumbai : The bullet-proof jacket worn by slain Anti-Terrorism Squad
(ATS) chief Hemant Karkare during the 26/11 attacks was not stolen but misplaced
in a state-run hospital here, a police probe into its disappearance has
suggested.
"The probe, which is nearing completion, suggests that the jacket had
not been stolen, but misplaced by hospital authorities," Senior Inspector
Khanderao Patil of J J Marg Police Station said on Friday.
"We will submit the probe report to Mazgaon court next month and seek
quashing of the FIR which alleged theft of the vest," he
said.
Karkare was killed on the night of November 26, 2008 by terrorists
near Cama Hospital.

UK PM David Cameron abandons Afghan base visit over attack
scare

KABUL: British Prime Minister David Cameron was forced to abandon a
visit to a military base in Afghanistan on Thursday due to suspicions that
Taliban insurgents might try to shoot down his helicopter.
Making his first visit to Afghanistan as prime minister, Cameron
earlier ruled out increasing Britain's troop commitment and called for quicker
progress to bring troops home.
He was due to visit troops at Shahzad forward operating base in
Helmand province, a location seen as relatively quiet after recent
counter-insurgency efforts, but his Chinook helicopter was abruptly diverted
after intelligence gathering suggested a threat, aides said.
A government source said that intelligence had suggested insurgents
might be planning to bring down a helicopter. Further information then indicated
a possible attack on a VIP.

Chidambaram to seek Hafiz Saeed's voice sample

NEW DELHI: India is expected to seek voice samples of Lashkar-e-Taiba
founder Hafiz Saeed and other handlers of 26/11 attackers during the visit of
Home Minister P Chidambaram to Islamabad later this month.
Chidambaram, who will be travelling to Islamabad on June 26 primarily
for SAARC Interior Minister's Conference, is expected to have bilateral meetings
with Pakistani leaders during which he is also likely to raise the issue of
cross border infiltration.
Ahead of the visit, Pakistan High Commissioner Shahid Malik met
Chidambaram here today to discuss issues related to the trip.
Sources said Chidambaram is expected to meet his Pakistani
counterpart Rehman Malik and seek to know the status of investigation and trial
being conducted in Pakistan in the Mumbai attacks case.

Pak nationals allowed long stay can now extend
visa

New Delhi: In a move which may pave the way for certain categories of
Pakistani nationals to get Indian citizenship in due course,the Centre has
relaxed norms for those who have been staying in India for long and asked states
and Union territories to consider cases for extension of their long-term visa
(LTV) without insisting for validity of their passports.
Pakistani nationals who come under such categories are: members of
minority communities in Pakistan;Pakistani women married to Indian nationals and
staying in India;Indian women married to Pakistani nationals and who returned
due to widowhood or divorce and having no male member to support them in
Pakistan and cases involving extreme compassion.
However,only such Pakistani nationals are eligible to be considered
for grant/extension of LTV who have come to India on or before December 31,2009,
a home ministry statement said on Thursday.

‘Gaza world's largest open prison'

KOTTAYAM: A.K. Ramakrishnan, professor, Centre for West Asian
Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, has opined that Gaza has turned into
“world's largest open prison.”
Speaking at the panel discussion on ‘Gaza Blockade', organised by the
Centre for West Asian Studies at the School of International relations, MG
University, on Wednesday, Mr. Ramakrishnan said the conditions prevailing in
Gaza are so agonising that the people have been under siege without food,
medicine and means of livelihood, for years.
Out of the 1.5 million people residing in Gaza, more than a million
are refugees in their own land on account of the intransigence and inhuman acts
of violence by Israel.

a Pakistani national based in Dubai through a UAE financial firm, says the
chargesheet filed by Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in a local court.
"Investigation has revealed that accused received money in Mumbai
through the UAE Exchange and Financial Services Ltd sent by Pakistani person
from Dubai," the 653-page chargesheet filed by ATS in the court, on Tuesday,
said.

The Catholic Church in Kerala on Thursday objected strongly to Chief
Minister VS Achuthanandan’s statement last week that Muslim and Christian
communalism was gaining strength in the State but reiterated that politics was
indeed a part of it.
Immediately after the Chief Minister’s statement, the church had
termed it as an effort at encouraging communalism by the responsible leaders
whose duty it was promote unity of the State.
After a two-day meeting of the Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council
(KCBC), its president Bishop Joshua Mar Ignathios indicated to the media that
the Chief Minister’s statement could be seen only as one that could endanger
religious harmony. He said responsible leaders should abstain from issuing such
statements.

Defiant Iran to review ties with IAEA

Iran said on Thursday it will review relations with the UN nuclear
watchdog a day after the UN Security Council approved a fourth round of
sanctions against Tehran over its disputed nuclear
programme.
Iran’s President dismissed the sanctions as “annoying flies” as
useless as “used tissues”.
Alaeddin Boroujerdi, the head of Parliament’s powerful National
Security and Foreign Policy Committee, described the sanctions as “political,
illegal and illogical” and said lawmakers would quickly “begin a revision of
Iran’s relations” with the International Atomic Energy Agency. He did not say
what options were to be discussed but a revision could result in restricting
International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors’ access to Iran’s nuclear
facilities.

Four Held With RDX Near Pakistan Border

The Amritsar police on Thursday arrested four young men in possession
of plastic explosives and narcotics believed to have been smuggled across the
electrified security fence from Pakistan.
Sher Singh, Malkiat Singh, Nirmal Singh and Balwinder Singh were
caught in an early morning police raid outside Thakkarpura village near the
border township of Patti. The men were in possession of six kilograms of RDX
along with 20 detonators, timing devices and about ten metres of fuse wire to be
used in improvising bombs.
The police also recovered over two kilograms of pure Afghani heroin
amidst the cache of explosives.

CBI To Grill Ajmer Blast Suspects Again

A CBI team is likely to question Ajmer blast suspects again, arrested
by Rajasthan ATS, following fresh leads that have emerged after recent
interrogation of Malegaon accused by the agency officials.
A CBI team, which is probing the Mecca Masjid bombing of May 2007,
recently interrogated 11 Malegaon blast accused lodged in the Nashik central
jail.
Sources revealed that the interrogation of the Malegaon blast accused
has provided certain leads to the investigating officials on the basis of which
the Central Bureau of Investigation intends to question Ajmer blast suspects
again. Devendra Gupta, Chandrashekhar Patidar and Vishnu Patidar were arrested
by Rajasthan ATS in connection with Ajmer and Mecca Masjid
blasts.

No Kashmir Talks With Pak As Of Now

India is not going to discuss substantive issues like Kashmir with
Pakistan in the proposed rounds of dialogue but is only attempting to create the
“right atmosphere” for removing the trust deficit for a broad dialogue
later.
“We are not going to discuss substantive issues like Kashmir. As of
now, our effort is to create a right atmosphere. Only then some degree of trust
can be created between the two countries,” highly-placed sources in the
government said.
They said the effort is for eliminating the trust deficit and “we are
not talking to Pakistan on four issues that concern us”. There was no
alternative but to talk to Pakistan as war was not an option, they

Karzai Looking To Pak To End Insurgency?

Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai has lost faith in the US strategy
in Afghanistan and is increasingly looking to Pakistan to end the insurgency,
according to reports in the British media from Kabul.
According to people close to Amrullah Saleh, Afghanistan’s former
head of intelligence services, who resigned last weekend, Mr Karzai had lost
confidence some time ago in the ability of Nato forces to defeat the
Taliban.
The Guardian’s report from Kabul says that privately Mr Saleh has
told aides that he believes Mr Karzai’s approach is dangerously out of step with
the strategy of his western backers.

Pakistan dismisses media reports on Headley

Islamabad: Pakistan on Thursday dismissed reports that LeT operative
David Headley had linked serving Pakistani army officers to the 2008 Mumbai
attacks, saying they were based on "misguided leaks" aimed at maligning the
country.
Asked about Indian media reports that Headley had named three
Pakistan Army officers who collaborated with the terrorists responsible for the
attacks, Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit said they were based on
"self-serving and misguided leaks which are meant only to malign our security
agencies and Pakistan".
"These reports are not worth our comments," Basit told a weekly news
briefing at the Foreign Office.
Headley, who has confessed to plotting the deadly 26/11 attacks, is
being questioned by a team of Indian investigators in the
US.

No lifting of Gaza blockade without soldier visits:

Israel will not lift its blockade of the Gaza Strip unless the
Islamist Hamas movement allows the Red Cross to visit an Israeli soldier
captured in 2006, its foreign minister said on Thursday.
“We must say clearly that the minimal condition for lifting the
blockade is for the Red Cross to be allowed to regularly visit Gilad Shalit,”
Avigdor Lieberman said in a statement, referring to the 23-year-old
conscript.
“As long as this condition is not fulfilled, there is no reason to
change the situation,” he added.
Hamas swiftly rejected the remarks, calling Israel’s linking of
Shalit’s fate to the blockade “an attempt to mislead and cover up international
efforts to break the siege.”

Drone strike toll mounts to 13

MIRANSHAH: The death toll of
drone strike in North Waziristan has reached to 13 whereas 12 others wounded in
the incident.
Sources said drone fired four missiles at a house in Datta Khel in
which 13 people were killed and 12 injured whereas two houses completely
destroyed. The injured were rushed to hospital.
Meanwhile, drone flights still going on in the areas creating panic
among the locals.

Kyrgyzstan declares state of emergency after
clashes

BISHKEK - Kyrgyzstan’s
interim government declared a state of emergency and a curfew in southern parts
of the country Friday after deadly ethnic clashes there.
“Seven people have been killed and about 50 injured,” interim
government spokesman Azimbek Beknazarov told national
radio.
The violence had clearly been inter-ethnic and well organised,
Beknazarov added, after having visited the city. And exchanges of fire continued
even after a curfew was declared.
Police were still discovering bodies in the city, said
Beknazarov.
The interior ministry said five people suspected of having organised
the violence in Osh had been arrested.

Six more killed as Lyari gang war continues

KARACHI: The death toll of the recent Lyari gang violence reached 38
as six people were killed on Thursday when notorious ringleader Baba Ladla
attacked the stronghold of Ghaffar Zikri, commonly known as Ali Muhammad
Mohalla.
Sources and eyewitnesses told Daily Times that more than 50 members
of the Baba Ladla group attacked Eidu Lane to kick out their rivals. The
crossfire continued for more than three hours and Ghaffar Zikri group had to
flee from the area.
The locals reported that after gaining control of Eidu Lane, the
Ladla group destroyed the dens of Zikri group and seized their stored weapons.
Their next target was Ali Mohammad Mohalla, another place controlled
by the Zikri group in Lyari. The Ladla group members tried to enter the Mohalla
through the Dubai Chowk, considering the route relatively safer but four of them
were shot dead.

Car bomb in Baghdad kills 4, wounds 10

BAGHDAD: A car bomb exploded near an Iraqi Army patrol on Thursday in
a mainly Sunni district of Baghdad, killing four people and wounding 10, an
Interior Ministry source said.
Soldiers, civilians and members of the government-backed Sahwa
militia of Sunni ex-insurgents were among the casualties in the Amiriya district
of the Iraqi capital, the source said.
Overall violence in Iraq has dropped sharply since the height of
sectarian war in 2006-07.
But political uncertainty following an inconclusive March 7 election
has fueled a spike in violence over the past two months.
Iraq's new parliament is due to convene on Monday, but a government
has yet to be formed.

DAMMAM: It is almost five years since Custodian of the Two Holy
Mosques King Abdullah formally took over the reins of the Kingdom of Saudi
Arabia.
According to the Islamic calendar, he received the pledge of
allegiance on Jamad Al-Thani 26, 1426, which corresponds to Aug. 1,
2005.
These five years have been significant in many ways. There was an
incessant talk of reform; newspapers were full of new universities being opened
or foundation stones being laid; and new economic cities created quite a buzz.
Saudi Arabia acquired a new respect among nations of the world for its just and
sagacious role. King Abdullah’s interfaith initiative was welcomed by the world
community and still is seen as a ray of hope by much of the global community. He
remains very popular among his people, and his initiatives hold the prospect of
a bright future for the Kingdom.

Iran protests bigger threat than Iraq war:

threat to the Islamic Republic than the devastating 1980s war with Iraq, the
head of the elite Revolutionary Guards was quoted as saying on
Thursday.
Iranian authorities are preparing for a potential revival of the
unrest on Saturday — the anniversary of the election — when opposition leaders
have asked for permission to hold peaceful commemorations.
In comments that underline a continued refusal to brook any dissent,
the Revolutionary Guards' commander said the protest movement had been a worse
threat to the regime than the invasion by Saddam Hussein's Iraq in 1980 and the
ensuing eight-year war.

Turkey, three Arab states to set up free trade
zone

ISTANBUL: Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria agreed Thursday to set up
a free trade zone, complete with a visa-free travel regime for their nationals,
a joint declaration issued here said.
The four countries will establish a cooperation council "to develop a
long-term strategic partnership" and "create a zone of free movement of goods
and persons among our countries," it said.
The deal was agreed by the foreign ministers of the four countries
who met on the sidelines of a Turkish-Arab Economic Forum in
Istanbul.
The free trade zone will be based on "existing bilateral agreements
and practices on free trade and visa exemption" between the parties, the
statement said, adding that Turkey and Lebanon were required to complete a
bilateral arrangement before the four-way process could go
ahead.

With eye on global role, India moving beyond
Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: When a senior security official here was asked why
Pakistan was not developing long-range missiles, unlike in India, his answer
revealed how these two nuclear foes' geopolitical priorities may be
diverging.
"We don't have ambitions like India has, so we don't need to develop
any further long-range missiles," he said. "Our missiles cover the entire India,
so that's it."
Indeed, India has raised eyebrows developing a new long-range missile
with a capacity to hit most of China, a signal of how New Delhi's focus is
tentatively moving away from an obsession with Pakistan to more global
issues.
For decades, these two countries, which have gone to war three times
since independence from Britain in 1947, have been synonymous with each other.
Diplomats often like to talk of India-Pakistan as
"hyphenated".
