Armed men kidnap three-year-old Hindu girl in Pak's Sindh

Islamabad : Unidentified armed men kidnapped a three-year-old Hindu girl in Pakistan's Sindh province, triggering a protest by members of the minority community who asked authorities to trace the child immediately.
Residents of Kashmore in Sindh organised a sit-in protest outside a police station yesterday to protest the kidnapping of the girl named Anchal from Hindu Mohalla on Wednesday night.
Anchal had reportedly gone to a temple with her eight-year-old sister Kashish and her mother on Wednesday.
When the sisters stepped out of the temple to buy some snacks, three armed men grabbed Anchal and fled.
The kidnapped girl's father, Ganesh Chand, who runs a cable TV network, told The Express Tribune newspaper that his daughters were eating snacks outside the temple when the armed men arrived on a motorcycle.
The men first tried to grab hold of a boy but he managed to escape, following which they grabbed Anchal and sped off.
Chand said one of the kidnappers, who was holding Anchal, fell off the motorcycle after travelling a distance of about 30 meters.
As people rushed towards him, his accomplices threatened to open fire, forcing them to back off. Police have had no success in tracing the kidnappers so far.
Kashmore district police chief Syed Asad Raza Shah said the kidnappers had managed to cross over to neighbouring Balochistan province.
The Express Tribune reported that police were yet to register a case.
The Hindu Panchayat and Shahree Action Committee called for a strike yesterday to protest this lapse and all markets and shopping centres in Kashmore remained closed.
Hundreds of people, including Shahree Action Committee chief Qadir Nawaz Jakhrani and Chand, gathered outside the police station.
They shouted slogans against the police and demanded that the girl should be recovered immediately.
Jakhrani condemned the police for their failure to control crime, especially cases of kidnapping-for-ransom.
"Neither the police nor the elected representatives are taking any interest in working towards curbing crime... It feels like that they (police and elected representatives) want us to leave the district," he said.
Traders and other Hindus live with the stress of kidnappings, said Jakhrani, who criticised the parliamentarian and legislator who represent Kashmore.
The head of the Sukkur chapter of the Hindu Panchayat, Mukhi Eshwar Lal, expressed anxiety about the "lawlessness in Kashmore" and said that "the Hindus are being targeted particularly in this district, which is condemnable".
Earlier, Hindus were targeted in other districts like Ghotki, Jacobabad, Shikarpur and Sukkur though the situation improved after Sindh Home Minister Zulfiqar Mirza issued directives to police to crack down on such crimes, said Eshwar Lal.
He said the situation continued to be bad in Kashmore district, where Hindu children are often kidnapped for ransom.
Eshwar Lal appealed to the President, Prime Minister and provincial Home Minister to take notice of the kidnappings and to post "dedicated police officers" in Kashmore to control the law and order situation.

Zardari calls for reform of blasphemy law

ISLAMABAD // The Pakistani president, Asif Ali Zardari, has called for reforms to a controversial blasphemy law after a government investigation concluded that a Christian woman had been sentenced to death on concocted charges.
The woman, Asia Bibi, 45, was convicted of passing derogatory remarks against the Prophet Mohammed and Islam, and sentenced to death by hanging, by a district court on November 7.
In a report to the president on Thursday, the minister for minorities, Shahbaz Bhatti, concluded that the blasphemy case against Ms Bibi was the result of personal enmity with her Muslim neighbours in the eastern district of Nankana Sahib.
In the report, Mr Bhatti, himself a Christian, said the story told in the police report was concocted and in bad faith. He recommended that the president grant Ms Bibi a pardon and suspend her sentence.
Mr Zardari asked the minister to form a committee of religious scholars and legal experts to recommend reforms to the law, so that it could not be abused for personal or political ends in future, the official Associated Press of Pakistan reported.
Mr Bhatti, will lead the committee, which will also lobby members of parliament for their support for the reforms.
Gen Mohammed Zia-ul-Haq, military ruler between 1977 and his death in 1988, enacted the law and more than half the blasphemy cases since registered have been against non-Muslims, who make up just five per cent of Pakistan's population.
However, the government faces an arduous task in enacting reforms to the law because of pressure from religious groups, including relatively moderate Sufis.
They threatened the governor and presidential representative of eastern Punjab province, Salman Taseer, after he visited and sympathised with Ms Bibi's family, and said he would petition the president to pardon her.
Two groups have issued edicts declaring Mr Taseer an apostate, saying the edict would not be lifted until he sought forgiveness and repented, the groups said.
The groups did not threaten violence.
Threats to the family of Ms Bibi have prompted them to go into hiding, while she has been placed in solitary confinement in jail. Mr Bhatti recommended that her family be provided with security.
Notably, the major religious parties have been restrained in their response.
The Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam, which represents the orthodox Deobandi school of Sunnis, is a coalition partner of Mr Zardari's Pakistan People's Party and has so far refrained from comment.
A veteran senator of the party, Maulana Mohammed Khan Sheerani, was on Thursday appointed chairman of the council of Islamic ideology, a state organisation that interprets Sharia law.
The Jama'at-i-Islami, a party ideologically aligned with Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood, has called for presidential powers of pardon to be withdrawn in blasphemy cases but indicated it would be open to amendments in the law made in consultation with parliament and religious scholars.
Some moderate scholars, notable among them Javed Ahmed Ghamdi, have declared the blasphemy law as contrary to Sharia and the tradition of the Prophet Mohammed.
Lawyers have said the law violates constitutional provisions guaranteeing human rights for religious minorities.
The Punjab law minister, Rana Sanaullah Khan, last week said his government would not press its prosecution of Ms Bibi when she appeals to the Lahore High Court.

Fifteen insurgents killed in Afghanistan: Nato

KABUL: Afghan and coalition forces killed at least 15 insurgents in eastern Afghanistan in an overnight operation, Nato said.
A Nato statement said security forces were searching for a senior Taliban leader when they came under attack near a remote compound in Sherzad district of Nangarhar province on Friday night.
Saturday’s statement said the insurgents died in the subsequent gunbattle.
Nato is trying to determine whether the Taliban leader the troops were searching for was among those killed.
Mohammad Hassan, a district chief in the area, gave a slightly higher estimate of the deaths.
He said at least 18 Taliban were killed in the fighting, including a local commander.

LeT camps reopened in Pak: Jailed militant

Exactly two years after the 26/11 attack in Mumbai, a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant arrested by the Jammu and Kashmir police revealed on Friday that the organisation's training camps that were forced to close down after the attacks have reopened.
Paraded before the media by Kashmir inspector general of police SM Sahai, Mohammad Salim Rehmani (24) admitted as much.
“We've arrested a Pakistani terrorist who has revealed that Pakistan's government and army are still supporting terrorism,“ said Sahai.
Allowed to speak to the media but under Sahai's watchful eye, Rehmani revealed that he was a resident of Nawab Shah, in Sindh district. He joined the LeT and was taken to Majid Ismail Khalil Rehmani mosque.
“It is from here that the LeT operates,“ said Sahai.
“The Pakistani government claimed after the Mumbai attacks that the mosque had been closed but it has been reopened and its anti-India activities have restarted,“ he said.
Rehmani said that after 26/11, all the LeT's permanent training and preaching centres were forcibly sealed by the Pakistani army. “The training was given in temporary camps,“ he said.
“However, the marakiz (centres) that were closed have now started again,“ he said.
Sahai said that Rehmani trained at Manshera camp in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
“Camps like the one at Baitul Mujahideen, which the Pakistani government claimed it had closed, are still operating,“ Sahai claimed.
Sahai said Rehmani had revealed there were five camps operating in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
“He said that 250 to 300 militants were still training in these camps. Every camp trains at least 50 militants in a batch,“ Sahai claimed.
The IG revealed that Salim , along with a group of seven more militants, first went to the Pakistani army on the border for permission to sneak into this side of Kashmir.
“They were given cover by the Pakistani army,“ Sahai said.
Sahai said that seven members of the group with which Rehmani had infiltrated into Kashmir had been killed so far in two encounters in North Kashmir.
Salim too was injured in the exchange of fire. He was sent to hospital and arrested after he recovered.

As India accused it of inaction in the Mumbai attacks case, Pakistan on Friday expressed its commitment to bring to justice those responsible for the 2008 terror strikes, but said that it too wanted progress in the resolution of issues like Kashmir and Siachen.
"Pakistan has condemned the Mumbai incident in the past and continues to do so on Friday. Two years have passed since the incident and it is our wish that those people who were involved in this incident should be brought to justice," foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said on the second anniversary of the terror strikes.
Mr Qureshi told reporters in his hometown of Multan in Punjab province that interior minister Rehman Malik had sent "some proposals" to India to facilitate progress in the process of bringing suspects linked to the Mumbai attacks to justice.

India on Friday asked Pakistan to dismantle the terror machine operating on its soil and bring perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks to speedy justice as the country marked the second anniversary of the 26/11 strikes.
"Once again I call upon Pakistan to dismantle the terror machine operating with impunity in territories under its control and to bring all the perpetrators of the Mumbai terror attacks to speedy justice," External affairs minister S M Krishna said.
In his message on the 26/11 anniversary, Mr Krishna said, "on the second anniversary of the barbaric terrorist attack in Mumbai, the nation pays respectful homage to its sons, daughters and foreign guests, whose innocent lives were cruelly snuffed out."
Ten Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists arrived by sea on the evening of November 26, 2008, in Mumbai and targeted different parts of the city, killing 166 people
and wounding over 300 during 60 hours of carnage.

We will not allow repeal of blasphemy laws: SIC

ISLAMABAD: Chief of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) Sahibzada Fazal Karim on Saturday said the SIC will not allow the repeal of the blasphemy laws. He said terrorism had distorted Pakistan’s image across the globe, adding that those persuading people for suicide bombings were not loyal to Pakistan.
Hundreds of SIC activists started a nearly 200-mile long march on Saturday in a protest against Taliban attacks on the country’s religious sites.
Authorities warned that militants could attack the procession which was being led by Sahibzada Fazal Karim.
Police escorted the convoy out of Islamabad, where the journey had started.
The participants, travelling on foot and in cars, plan to rally in Lahore, where 47 people died in a suicide bombing at a Sufi shrine in July.

Sena, MNS slam SRK over Pak aid

MUMBAI: The Shiv Sena (SS) and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) have targeted actor Shah Rukh Khan for agreeing to help Pakistan's flood victims.
While MNS chief Raj Thackeray has called for a boycott of Shah Rukh's films, the Sena on Friday slammed SRK in its mouthpiece Saamna.
The Sena claims that the actor will host a dinner party at a restaurant in London on Sunday for a Pakistani TV channel. The event will also include a fashion show and a song-and-dance event.
The paper also alleges that while the country mourns the victims of the 26/11 terror attack, the actor is "going to dance and sing" for a Pakistani channel.

ONE OF the well-kept secrets of the Mumbai terror attack is the local help the terrorists from Pakistan received during the siege.
While the Mumbai Police brass and central and state leaders have denied any local involvement, Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) officials have steadfastly, albeit privately, acknowledged that the attack had a huge local component. And they have strong reasons to believe so. According to them, the two taxis blown up during the attack were done for a specific reason.
“The taxi drivers had been probably arranged by the local help even before the terrorists entered Mumbai. We believe they did not want to give out any evidence of the local link and, hence, the terrorists were told to kill the taxi drivers,” said an ATS investigator, hastening to add that they were not suggesting any involvement of the taxi drivers, but only that they were killed for a reason.

Taliban commander arrested in Swat

MINGORA: Police arrested an important Taliban commander Sher Ali from Swat’s Matta area, television reports said.
Sher Ali used to look after the Taliban’s financial matters and also provided arms and weapons to the militants, a private television channel quoted the police as saying.
However, another report said Sher Ali was involved in various incidents of torture and was wanted in important cases.
Sher Ali has now been shifted to an unspecified location.

US drone attack kills four terrorists

MIRANSHAH: A US drone attack targeted a vehicle in northwestern tribal belt on Friday, killing four terrorists near the Afghan border, local security officials said. The unmanned aircraft targeted the vehicle in Pir Keley village, 10 kilometres east of Miranshah. “It was a US drone attack and three militants were killed,” a security official said. “It was not clear if any high value target was present in the area at the time of attack,” he said, adding that identities of those killed in the strike were also not immediately known. LAHORE: Eight terrorists were killed in a gunfight with the security forces in the Lower Orakzai Agency on Friday, a private TV channel reported. Second suicide bomber strikes in northern Yemen

SANAA: Two tribesmen were killed and several others were injured when a suicide bomber blew his car up in a tribal convoy in the Sahar district of the northwestern province of Saada early Friday local sources said.
The driver of the car was killed in the attack and many vehicles were damaged.
"One person was martyred" and "eight people were wounded, some seriously, when a car carrying tribesmen from Maarib province on their way from Saada to Dahyan, exploded," rebel spokesman Mohammed Abdulsalam said by telephone.
He said that the attack on the convoy headed to the funeral venue near the Saudi border from the rebel stronghold of Saada was the work of a suicide bomber.
Tribal sources confirmed the mourners had been hit by a suicide bombing on their way to Dahyan.

Pak Muslims warn of anarchy if Christian pardoned

Lahore : Pakistani Muslims threatened protests and anarchy if the government pardons a Christian mother sentenced to death for blasphemy, calling hundreds of demonstrators onto the streets on Saturday.
Demonstrators marched in the eastern city of Lahore after the most influential Sunni Muslim alliance in Pakistan urged the government not to grant mother-of-five Aasia Bibi clemency.
A crowd of several hundred called for "Jihad" and pledged to sacrifice their lives to protect the honour of the Prophet Mohammad, a reporter said.
The rally was organised by a subsidiary of banned charity Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD), which the United Nations has blacklisted as a terrorist organisation.

Girls’ school bombed in Landi Kotal

LANDI KOTAL: Militants blew up another government girls’ school at Khuga Khel Shinwari area in Landi Kotal on Friday. The terrorists had planted explosive material inside the primary school, which completely destroyed its building beside two rooms of an adjacent house owned by Haji Tasleem Shinwari, a source in political administration informed. The total number of partially and completely destroyed schools in Landikotal sub-division has reached nine whereas more than 30 schools have been destroyed in the whole of Khyber Agency. According to the assistant political agent, it was the duty of the employees to protect their schools. The class four employees on the other hand have urged the government to provide security to the government schools, as they are helpless to safeguard the schools.

34,000 women paramedics go missing after Pakistan floods

ISLAMABAD: According to the UN, around 34,000 women paramedical workers have gone missing from the flood affected districts of Pakistan, a media report said on Saturday.
Noted social activist Tahira Abdullah said the mindboggling disclosure in the UN report has so far failed to have an impact on the government, The NewsInternational reported.
"Even the provincial governments are silent on this report, which should have been enough to shake the entire set-up," she said.
Abdullah asked the government to take a roll-call, so it could be confirmed that all the paramedical workers were safe.
"They (the government) tried to play down the matter and said that there actually is exaggeration in the report. According to their statistics, only 10,000 have gone missing during the floods," she said.
The floods that started in July have killed around 1,700 people and affected more than 20 million. Overall economic loss has been estimated at around $9.5 billion.

Iran slams UN ban on philosophy day

An Iranian lawmaker says the withdrawal of UN cultural body UNESCO from the World Philosophy Day events in Tehran reflects its concerns about the spread of Islamic philosophy to other countries.
"UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) boycotted the ceremonies under political pressure," Mohammad Javad Abtahi told IRNA on Thursday.
Iran was the first Asian country to host the conference of the International Philosophy Day on November 21-23.
However, UNESCO head Irina Bokova said in a statement that the body was disassociating itself "as the secretariat was not fully consulted on all aspects."

Afghan forces provide safe, secure medical care in Lashkar Gah

KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan National Security Forces and Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan officials in Lashkar Gah district of Helmand province coordinated with a U.S. civil affairs team at the local center for culture and information to provide medical care to more than 250 local Afghans yesterday.
“The people who received care today are the most depressed, whether it is being sick or handicapped in the village,” Ali Shah Mozloomyar, chief of the Cultural and Information Department for Helmand province said during an interview. “These people are not able to afford health care. If it wasn?t for the event today they would go without care.”
The Afghan civilians came from inside the district as well as from Ashaqziy, Barikziy and Norziy to receive care, said Mozloomyar. Some of the patients were refugees that have fled from Nad 'Ali.

Muslims and their mosques face a higher level of threats and intimidation in UK suburbs and market towns than in big cities, according to a report.
Case studies reveal examples such as a Muslim woman who was punched and called a "terrorist" in front of her petrified daughter. The report said such attacks often go unreported, and in this case the woman was too scared to inform the police.
She also played down the incident to reduce her child's distress and avoided explaining why she was singled out for wearing a burka and being a Muslim woman.

KARACHI, Pakistan (Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Moosa Ali, 21, son of Saeed Muhammad, was gunned down by the terrorists of outlawed Nasabi-Wahabi organization on Wednesday Night at Nazimabad Karachi.
Terrorists of outlawd Banned Organizations (SSP&LJ) fired One bullet on his head while he was returning home. He was the Boy Scout of Shia Scout Group namely Pak Haidri scouts group.
His funeral prayers were held at Babul Elm Imam Bargah North Nazimabad.
Outlawed terrorists outfit Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Sipah-e-Sahaba have established a strong network in Karachi. Their terrorism are spread from Khyber PakhtunKhuwa to Punjab and now growing in Sindh.

US Afghan war now as long as Soviet war

The Soviet Union could not win in Afghanistan, and now the US is about to have something in common with that futile campaign: nine years, 50 days.
On Friday, the US-led coalition will have been fighting in this South Asian country for as long as the Soviets did in their humbling attempt to build up a socialist state. The two invasions had different goals, and dramatically different body counts, but whether they have significantly different outcomes remains to be seen.
What started out as a quick war on October 7, 2001, by the US and its allies to wipe out al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and the Taliban has instead turned into a long and slogging campaign. Now about 100,000 NATO troops are fighting a burgeoning insurgency while trying to support and cultivate a nascent democracy.

LONDON: British intelligence agency MI6 was on Friday at the centre of an embarrassing controversy after it emerged that it was “fooled” into mistaking a Pakistani shopkeeper as key Taliban commander Mullah Akhtar Mohammed Mansour, and flying him to Kabul to meet Afghan President Hamid Karzai for sensitive peace negotiations.
In a sign of a growing diplomatic row, Mr. Karzai's chief of staff Mohammad Umer Daudzai blamed British authorities for the embarrassment. “The last lesson we draw from this: international partners should not get excited so quickly with those kind of things,” he told The Washington Post, adding: “Afghans know this business, how to handle it. We handle it with care, we handle it with a result-based approach, with very less damage to all the other processes.”

Training camps in Pakistan and PoK were shifted after 26/11, says top LeT militant

SRINAGAR: A top Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant has revealed that the training camps for militants still operate in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and after 26/11, the camps were only shifted and not closed down.
Saim Rehman alias Abu Saad, the 24-year-old resident of Sindh in Pakistan told interrogators that he knew at least such five camps operating in PoK. Inspector-General of Police, Kashmir zone, S.M. Sahai, who presented him before the media, said it was also revealed that over 250 militants were being trained in these camps.
Rehman disclosed that soon after the Mumbai attack it was reported that one of the main training camps in Muzaffarabad-Baitul Markaz was closed down. “It was locked, but the arms and ammunition were lying there. It was shifted to some other place, where training resumed,” an official quoted him as saying.

India changed its vote at U.N. for some other reason: Iran

NEW DELHI: Describing the English translation of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as “weak,” Iranian officials say India should not have changed its vote for this reason alone at a recent meeting of the United Nations committee on human rights.
India took umbrage at the mention of Kashmir as a “nation” by the Iranian leader twice in six months and once by a Foreign Ministry official, and served a demarche each time on Iran.
Indian officials later said the Iran's mention of Kashmir as a nation was crucial in India changing its decision at the U.N. panel meeting. In the past, India had voted “no” when a West-sponsored resolution condemning Iran for rights abuses came up annually at the U.N. But this time, New Delhi abstained from voting.

LeT operative nabbed on eve of 26/ 11

THE MAHARASHTRA Anti- Terrorism Squad ( ATS) has arrested a man believed to be an operative of the Lashkare- Tayyeba ( LeT).
Shabeer K. P. was arrested on Thursday after he arrived at the Mumbai airport aboard a flight from Riyadh.
ATS officials said Shabeer is a close aide of the LeT’s southern commander in India, T. Naseer.
ATS chief Rakesh Maria said Shabeer is also accused of planting a bomb at the Coimbatore Press Club in 2002 to protest against the arrest of PDP chairman Abdul Nasser Madani, who was booked in connection with the 1998 Coimbatore serial blasts case.
On Thursday, the Maharashtra ATS acted upon a tip- off from the Intelligence Bureau that Shabeer would be trying to sneak back into the country along with Haj returnees.
He would be handed over to the Tamil Nadu Police by Friday night for further interrogation.

No use questioning me on Benazir's assassination: Musharraf

Islamabad : Former President Pervez Musharraf has said that he enjoys presidential immunity from criminal prosecution and any questionnaire sent to him by the Pakistan government regarding ex-premier Benazir Bhutto's assassination would have "no value".
Musharraf, currently living in self-exile in Britain, said he had not received any questionnaire from the Pakistan government related to Bhutto's assassination in December 2007 and his role in the security provided to her.
He made the remarks while talking to reporters in London on the launch of the British chapter of his new party, the All Pakistan Muslim League.
Officials of Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency have said they have framed a 32-point questionnaire that will be sent to the former military ruler to question him about his role before and after the assassination.

Deposed Malaysia sultan loses battle against son

Kuala Lumpur : A deposed Malaysian state sultan has lost a court battle with his eldest son who seized the throne in a rare palace coup.
The verdict by Malaysia's highest court prevents Tuanku Ismail Petra Yahya Petra from regaining his throne of Kelantan state anytime soon.
Nine of Malaysia's 13 states are ruled by hereditary royal families.
Ismail's eldest son, Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra, took over the throne of the northern state in September while his father was bedridden with a reported stroke.
Ismail's lawyer, Rashid Zulkifli, said a three-judge panel in the Federal Court ruled Friday that the ex-sultan has no right to refer key legal questions about the extent of his son's powers while he was medically incapacitated.

‘LeT contact’ hunt leads to labour contractor

Patiala : On a day when it emerged that the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) commanders who planned the 26/11 Mumbai terror strikes had spoken to a drug smuggler in Punjab (who was also a police informer), on his mobile phone, the Punjab Police tracked the mobile number to a migrant from Bihar who has been working as a labour contractor in Rajpura for the past few months and picked him up for questioning. However, the police were yet to conclusively ascertain whether this is the person the LeT cadres called a day before the Mumbai terror attack. Sources also confirmed that a joint team of intelligence agencies from Mumbai and the Intelligence Bureau headquarters in Delhi had come to Patiala a few months ago and made specific inquiries about the Punjab link to the case.

Patna : If the BJP sealed every debate of it not being able to garner votes of all sections by bagging an unprecedented 91 of 102 seats it contested, the party’s winner from Amaur Assembly seat in Purnia might have sealed some of debate of the party not getting Muslim votes.
The BJP had picked its candidate here from the Muslim community to experiment. The party candidate, Saba Zafar, surprised pollsters by winning the seat by 8,828 votes from Congress’s popular and sitting MLA Abdul Jalil Mastan. Zafar was the lone Muslim contestant from the BJP.
The BJP won 27 and its partner JD-U 13 of 51 Assembly seats in minority-centric areas, getting 41.2 per cent in Araria, 36.9 in Purnia and 42.8 in Katihar.

Post 26/11, 'Kuber' becomes untouchable for fishermen

Ahmedabad : Fishing trawler 'Kuber', which was hijacked and used by Pakistani terrorists to reach Mumbai and unleash terror in November 2008, has been lying useless as nobody wants to use it, the vessel's owner said.
The boat was on a fishing trip in the Arabian Sea when it was hijacked by the terrorists and used to reach the Mumbai coast.
Two years after the 26/11 terror attacks, the trawler is lying at Porbandar shores unused, 'Kuber' owner Vinod Masani said by phone on Friday from the port city in Gujarat.
"Nobody wants to take this boat for fishing in the sea," Masani rued and demanded compensation for the loss.

In his five years as Iraq's president, Jalal Talabani has shown a remarkable ability to rise above the ethnic and religious divisions defining the country's political scene - sometimes at the expense of his own Kurdish identity.
The 77-year-old statesman with his trademark grin, hearty laugh, portly girth and walrus-like mustache was elected to a second, four-year term in office this month and already has been thrust back into the public eye.
On Thursday, he formally asked incumbent Shiite Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki to form a new government, fulfilling a key but rather symbolic duty as president. But only a week earlier, he gave an example of how he has flexed what real muscles his officially ceremonial position does have by refusing to sign off on the hanging of one of Saddam Hussein's closest aides, Tariq Aziz.

Nurses feel they are not wanted for marriage

DAMMAM: With the springing up of more and more hospitals and health centers across the Kingdom, there has also been a huge demand for nursing staff, a field that is overwhelmingly dominated by foreigners. However, more and more young Saudi women are also becoming nurses, something that is leading to a new phenomenon.
“The number of young Saudi women joining nursing courses is on the rise. There are more than 5,000 Saudi female nurses in the Eastern Region alone. We have managed to achieve 50 percent Saudization in the government health sector,” said Sharifa Al-Zayed, director of the Nursing Department at the Health Affairs Directorate in the Eastern Region.
Many Saudi women have managed to succeed in this profession in spite of overwhelming opposition, especially from their family members, notably husbands, something that often affects how well they perform their jobs.

‘Naked’ truth for blackmailer

TAIF: An Afghan girl retaliated in the humiliating way possible against a Yemeni shopkeeper who threatened to post her photos online if she did not sleep with him.
The Yemeni man, who works in a famous shop in Taif and was already dating the girl, wanted to take their relationship to another level. When she refused, he threatened to post her pictures online. The girl decided to set a trap for the Yemeni man and told him that she would agree to his demands if he gave up all the pictures. She told him to come to her apartment at night. When he entered the apartment, he was surprised to see seven men waiting for him.
The men beat up the Yemeni, took off his clothes and photographed him naked with their cell phones. They even made video clips of him before releasing him.
The man told police a fake story about him being kidnapped and robbed. Police arrested the group and the Yemeni.

Markaz to hold Islamic conference

JEDDAH: Jamia Markaz will organize an international Islamic conference in the southern Indian city of Calicut in January with dignitaries from the Arab and Islamic world attending.
The conference, commemorating the 33rd anniversary of Jamia Markaz Ssaquafathi Ssunniyya, will be held from Jan. 7-9, its General Secretary Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar told a press conference in Jeddah.
The conference will also mark the graduation of the 15th batch of students from the Faculty of Shariah at Jamia Markaz, he added. Aboobacker was in the Kingdom to perform Haj. He said Jamia Markaz, a prestigious charitable institution for religious education in India, aims to build more institutions to bolster technological development and progress in the Muslim community.
