Saudi king urged US to attack Iran: Leaked US documents

LONDON: King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia urged the United States to attack Iran to destroy its nuclear programme, according to US documents revealed by WikiLeaks, published by the Guardian newspaper Sunday.
A cable to Washington from the US embassy in Riyadh recorded the king's "frequent exhortations to the US to attack Iran and so put an end to its nuclear weapons program."
The memo said that the king told the Americans to "cut off the head of the snake," and said that working with the US to roll back Iranian influence in Iraq was "a strategic priority for the king and his government."
The document, taken from WikiLeaks and published by Britain's Guardian newspaper, said that Washington believed Saudi attitudes towards Iraq were "marked by skepticism and suspicion."
WikiLeaks on Sunday released around 250,000 classified cables -- some sent as recently as February this year -- to several media outlets worldwide.
Earlier Sunday, the US ambassador to Britain Louis Susman condemned the document release.
"Any unauthorized disclosure of classified information by WikiLeaks has the very real potential to harm innocent individuals as well as efforts to advance objectives we share with the United Kingdom and nations around the world," he said.
"I am confident that our uniquely productive relationship with the United Kingdom will remain close and strong, focused on promoting our shared objectives and values."
The Guardian reported that the documents were allegedly downloaded by a US soldier and passed on to the website.
WikiLeaks chief said, Julian Assange, said the released documents addressed "every major issue in every country in the world".

Iran blames Israel after N-scientist dies in blast

TEHRAN: Assailants on motorcycles attached magnetized bombs to the cars of two nuclear scientists as they were driving to work in Tehran on Monday, killing one and wounding the other, Iranian officials said. The president accused Israel and the West of being behind the attacks.
Iran's nuclear chief, Ali Akbar Salehi, said the man killed was involved in a major project with the country's nuclear agency, though he did not give specifics. Media reports said that Majid Shahriari, the killed scientist, was a member of a regional scientific programme that also involved Israel.
Some Iranian media also reported that the wounded scientist was a laser expert at Iran's defence ministry and one of the country's few top specialists in nuclear isotope separation.
Iranian officials said they suspected the assassination was part of a covert campaign aimed at damaging the country's nuclear program, which the United States and its allies say is intended to build a weapon – a claim Tehran denies. At least two other Iranian nuclear scientists have been killed in recent years, one of them in an attack similar to Monday's .
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told a press conference that "undoubtedly, the hand of the Zionist regime and Western governments is involved in the assassination."

LONDON: Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has terminal cancer and could be dead "within months," according to a US document released by WikiLeaks and published by Britain's Telegraph newspaper.
The memo, sent from the US consulate in Istanbul, quotes a businessman with close links to former Iranian president Hashemi Rafsanjani as saying that Khamenei had been diagnosed with a rare form of Leukaemia.
"Khamenei is likely to die within a matter of months," the August 2009 memo, revealed by the whistle-blowing website, said.
"As a result, Rafsanjani has stopped campaigning within the Assembly of Experts to challenge Khamenei, and now is focused on 'letting nature take its course'," it said.

'Policeman' kills six NATO troops in Afghanistan: Military

KABUL: A man wearing Afghan police uniform killed six NATO troops during a training session in eastern Afghanistan on Monday, the latest in a series of similar shootings announced by the US-led military.
"An individual in an Afghan border police uniform turned his weapon against International Security Assistance Forces during a training mission today, killing six servicemembers in eastern Afghanistan," ISAF said.
The man was also killed in the incident and a joint Afghan-NATO team is investigating, the military announced in a short statement.
ISAF did not reveal the casualties' nationalities, in line with its policy, but Americans make up most of the foreign troops based in eastern Afghanistan, one of the worst flashpoints in the nine-year Taliban insurgency.
The deaths brings the toll coalition forces lost this year to 668, according to an AFP tally based on that tracked by the independent icasualties.org website, the highest annual toll since the US-led invasion in late 2001.
Last year 521 NATO soldiers died.
The United States is bankrolling a massive programme -- $9.2 billion in fiscal 2010 -- to build Afghanistan's army and police so they can take over responsibility for security by 2014, as pledged by NATO in Lisbon a week ago.
But the programme has been troubled by a series of shootings, either by insurgents dressed in Afghan security uniforms or rogue officers.
This month, NATO said it was investigating whether an Afghan soldier killed two coalition troops on a military base in the volatile town of Sangin in southern Helmand province.
NATO troops share bases with Afghan soldiers and police, leaving coalition forces vulnerable to attacks by infiltrators.
In July, an Afghan soldier killed two American contractors inside a military base in north Afghanistan.
A week later, another Afghan solider killed three British Gurkha soldiers.
In 2009, five British soldiers were killed by an Afghan policeman.
Police are seen as central to the goal of getting Afghans to take the lead in the fight against the Taliban, who were ousted by the US-led invasion in late 2001 but who wage an increasingly deadly guerrilla war.
There are currently about 80,000 police officers and US and NATO forces hope to bring that number up to 134,000 by October next year, alongside the 170,000 personnel planned for the army by the same date.
On Sunday, leading think tank the International Crisis Group (ICG) issued a damning review of the war and said Afghan security forces "have proven a poor match for the Taliban".
The ICG said the police were "corrupt, brutal and predatory", the army was being manipulated by various strongmen, while both forces suffered from a lack of training and low retention among the ranks.

Sherry submits bill for amending blasphemy laws

ISLAMABAD: Amid announcements by the religious forces in the country to resist any move to change the blasphemy laws, former information minister and Pakistan People’s Party MNA Sherry Rehman has submitted a bill to the National Assembly Secretariat seeking an end to the death penalty under the existing blasphemy laws.
Talking to Dawn here on Monday, Ms Rehman said that she had submitted a private member’s bill as she believed that blasphemy laws as set out in the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) found their roots in colonial laws and had in their present form become a source of victimisation and persecution of the minorities in the country.

Pakistani woman's nose cut-off by in-laws

ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani woman's nose was cut off and her head tonsured by her in-laws who then locked her up for three days because they suspected her of having an affair with a neighbour, police said.
The incident took place in Gujranwala in Punjab province.
Aasiya Bibi's brother-in-law Anwar, his wife Kalsoom and sons Waqas and Awais caught hold of her and cut off her nose and shaved off her head, alleging that she had an illicit relationship with a local man.
"Aasiya has been living with her in-laws for over seven years and her husband works in Multan, so he rarely manages to visit," Express Tribune quoted Aasiya's neighbour Nida as saying.

The international community is already pressuring Iran to drop its attempt to refine uranium, but the leaked cables published Sunday by world newspapers show that behind the scenes world leaders are fearful and pessimistic.

Growing Islamophobia sets alarm bells ringing

LONDON: Violence and intimidation of Muslims and their places of worship has been at unacceptable levels since 9/11, is the message of a report on ‘Islamophobia and Anti-Muslim Hate Crime’ launched at the London Muslim Centre on Saturday. The authors call upon the new government to tackle the problem before it deteriorates further.
The report is a part of a ten-year Europe-wide research project into the experience of Muslims as victims of violence, intimidation and discrimination. The research is being conducted by the European Muslim Research Centre of the University of Exeter and sponsored by the Al-Jazeera Centre for Studies. The focus of this report was on case studies from the UK.
“Evidence in the report of specific threats to Muslims is overwhelming and compelling,” said co-author of the report Dr Robert Lambert. Examples given include an attack by youths on a 70-year-old man in white robes on his way home from a mosque, and a taxi driver found bleeding from multiple stab wounds to his head who subsequently died.

British schoolgirl arrested for burning Quran

London: A 15-year-old schoolgirl has been arrested in Britain after a video of her burning the Quran was posted on Facebook, a media report said Friday.
The girl from Sandwell in Birmingham reportedly set fire to an English language copy of the Islamic holy book, and was watched by other pupils in her school premises, The Sun reported Friday.
Police said the video has since been taken out from Facebook, and the girl arrested on suspicion of inciting religious hatred.
Meanwhile, a 14-year-old boy, thought to have made a retaliatory attack on the girl on the social networking website, was accused of making threats and has also been arrested.
Both the teenagers were later granted bail, police said Thursday.

Abida Parveen suffers heart attack, hospitalised

LAHORE: Legendary Sufi singer Abida Parveen was admitted to the ICU after she suffered a heart attack. She is now out of danger, doctors confirmed Sunday.
The 56-year-old was admitted Saturday night at the Doctors Hospital in Lahore. She dunderwent an angioplasty and is under observation for 24 hours, reported Geo TV online.
Doctors have revealed that the singer would have to stay in the hospital for at least five days.
Abida, who is a singer of Sindhi descent, sings mainly ghazals and Urdu love songs. But her forte is Kafis, a solo genre accompanied by percussion and harmonium, using a repertoire of songs by Sufi poets.

Russia's Islamist rebels mull new "state" language

Militants waging an Islamist insurgency in Russia's mainly Muslim North Caucasus region have proposed using either Arabic or a Turkic language as a lingua franca for their affairs.
A decade after Moscow drove separatists from power in Chechnya in the second of two wars, rebels stage near-daily attacks in the North Caucasus, and many want to carve out a separate state from Russia and impose Islamic sharia law.
The insurgents now communicate with each other largely in Russian, also the main language of the dozen or so Islamist web sites they are affiliated with, and of their video addresses.
The insurgency leader, Chechen rebel Doku Umarov, suggested earlier this month that a "state" language be formed for the self-styled Caucasus Emirate, a grouping of Muslim republics including Chechnya and Dagestan that want to quit Russia.

Women group challenges Deoband's authority to issue fatwas

Malegaon: In a strongly worded letter to the Darul Uloom Deoband, a Muslim women's advocacy group has decried the frequent fatwas - religious decrees issued by the Deoband seminary, and has even went on to challenge its authority to do so.
Who are you and what is your authority to pass such fatwas? In a secular democracy like India and in a religion that denounces clergy ship, from where do you get the authority to pass dictates which are unconstitutional and un-Islamic?", Bhartiya Muslim Mahila Andolan asked in an open letter written to Darul Uloom, Deoband.
Bhartiya Muslim Mahila Andolan's letter came in the wake of the frequent fatwas issued by the Deoband, the latest in the line being divorce pronounced by the husband on phone.
The Deoband in its fatwa has said such a divorce is valid even if the wife has not heard it due to network problems. It also says that ‘for talaak to take place it is not necessary that wife should hear it or witnesses are present.’ In October this year they also ruled that talaak pronounced in jest is also valid.

Dalai Lama honoured with doctorate at Jamia

New Delhi: The Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of six millions Tibetans and a global icon of peace and inter-faith harmony, was Tuesday conferred an honorary doctorate by Delhi's Jamia Millia Islamia, a government-funded central university with a 90-year-old rich history. The Jamia is the first Indian university to confer an honorary degree on the spiritual leader.
The honour that had the nod of the Indian government was conferred on the Nobel Peace laureate after the Human Resource Development Ministry's proposal on the matter was cleared by the Ministry of External Affairs.
The proposal was earlier held up by the government as it feared it might upset China which calls the Dalai Lama a separatist.
Religious tolerance and peace were the messages which echoed as university Vice Chancellor Najeeb Jung awarded the 'Doctor of Letters' (D.Litt) degree to the Dalai Lama in the presence of Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal and thousands of students and members of the faculty, besides diplomats and leading lights, at the university campus.

KANDAHAR: Nato’s planned withdrawal of combat troops from Afghanistan in 2014 will likely mean a Taliban takeover and civil war, residents in the heartland of the insurgency fear, echoing a worrying recent report.
Afghans in the southern city of Kandahar said Afghanistan’s security forces would likely collapse when foreign combat troops left, even if they continued providing training and equipment.
Kandahar province is the birthplace of the Taliban and has long been the focal point of Afghanistan’s bitter insurgency.
“It’s 100 percent possible that there will be a civil war,” said Pida Muhammad, a worker at the Kandahar governor’s palace.

Pakistani kids offer to sell themselves for mother's surgery

Islamabad: Four children in Pakistan's Punjab province have put up a banner outside their house that reads "children for sale" in a bid to raise fund for their mother's kidney transplant.
Omar Illyas, son of 35-year-old Aqsa Parveen of Vehari town in Punjab province, said all valuables in their house had been sold and their only chance of saving their mother's life was to offer themselves now, the Express Tribune reported.
Parveen was told at Lahore's Shaikh Zayed Hospital that she needed a kidney transplant.
A doctor there said the procedure would cost up to Rs.500,000 and that one of her children would have to donate a kidney, Parveen said.
As she did not have the required funds at that time, she came back home and since then has not consulted a physician. She has sold almost all things in her house and was now dependent on her sister and her brother-in-law.

MUMBAI: While the demolished Babri Masjid at Ayodhya is at the centre of India's longest-drawn legal row, an older one built by Babar survives in a forgotten battlezone, Panipat. The first mosque built by the Mughal ruler on his arrival in India is a modest, beautiful structure named Kabuli Bagh that comes nowhere close to the majesty of later Mughal architecture.
Having watched the destruction at Ayodhya, caretakers of Kabuli Bagh masjid are mindful of falling prey to politics. ''There are people who have made repeated pleas to perform namaz five times a day but we have firmly said that this is not possible and they should go to court,'' said Ranvir Singh Shastri, registering officer of department of archaeology and museums, Chandigarh.

Iranian nuclear scientist killed in blast

TEHRAN: Twin blasts in Iran’s capital killed a nuclear scientist and wounded another on Monday, said state media reports that promptly blamed Israeli agents on motorbikes of attaching the bombs to their cars.
“In a criminal terrorist act, the agents of the Zionist regime attacked two prominent university professors who were on their way to work,” the website of Iran’s state television network reported, referring to arch-foe Israel.
“Dr Majid Shahriari was killed and his wife was injured. Dr Fereydoon Abbasi and his wife were injured,” the report said.
Fars news agency said the scientists were targeted in two different locations by men on motorcycles who approached their vehicles and attached bombs to their cars.
Shahriari was a member of the nuclear engineering department of Shahid Beheshti University in northern Tehran, according to the official IRNA news agency.

US drone attack kills four in NWA

MIRANSHAH – A US drone attack targeting a vehicle travelling in northwestern tribal belt near the Afghan border killed four militants on Sunday, local security officials said.
The unmanned aircraft targeted the vehicle in Hasan Khel village, around 30 kilometres east of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan tribal district.
“US drone fired two missiles, the vehicle is still on fire, we have reports that three militants were killed in this attack,” a local security official in Miranshah said.
A security official in Peshawar also confirmed the incident and the toll. Another security official in Miranshah said that identities of those killed in the strike were not immediately known. A covert US drone campaign in Pakistan has been stepped up over the last few months with strikes in the tribal belt.

Abu Dhabi: Mohammed Omran, the CEO of UAE's telecommunication service provider Etisalat, has been named the World CEO of 2010 at a ceremony in Britain, it was announced Saturday.
He was honoured at the World Communication Awards ceremony in recognition of his outstanding work in the sector.
Etisalat has a market value of 30.8 billion UAE dirhams (about $25 billion) and 100 million subscribers worldwide.
Omran has worked with the company for over three decades and served in different positions till he became the chairman in 2005.
The World Communication Awards recognise the companies and individuals responsible for innovations, achievements and services in the sector.

Gaddafi's eccentric and unpredictable personality are on full display in a State Department cable, which was posted on the New York Times website, a small sampling of the more than 250,00 documents unveiled by WikiLeaks yesterday despite Washington's protests.
The cable from September 2009 describes how Gaddafi's preferences for shorter flights and accommodation on the ground floor created logistical headaches for his staff, and that the Libyan leader never travelled without a certain Ukrainian nurse at his side.
Gaddafi had a team of nurses and "relies heavily on his long-time Ukrainian nurse, Galyna Kolotnytska, who has been described as a 'voluptuous blond," said a secret cable from the Tripoli embassy dated September 29, 2009.

SWAT: Two key Taliban fighters were killed during a bloody skirmish with security forces in the Sher Palum area in Swat, officials sources said on Sunday. On a tip off regarding the presence of terrorists in the Sher Palum, the security forces surrounded the mountainous area and asked the outlaws to put down their arms and surrender. Instead, the Taliban fighters started firing at the security forces, prompting the security forces to return fire. During the encounter, the two terrorists were killed. Three hand grenades, two guns and ammunition were recovered from their possession.

Pakistani-Americans, HR groups seek blasphemy laws review

WASHINGTON, Nov 26: Pakistanis living in the United States have joined human rights groups in urging the government to release Aasia Bibi and reconsider the laws that discriminate against minorities.
“We condemn the abuse of the blasphemy law and request President Asif Ali Zardari not to accede to the threats made by certain religious groups and award imminent clemency to Aasia Bibi,” said the Pakistani-American Public Affairs Committee, an umbrella organisation representing a dozen groups. In a recent meeting of its executive board, the Christian League of Pakistan in America also “strongly condemned the victimisation of innocent people under the blasphemy law”, reminding the government that “the entire world is awaiting a sane decision in the Aasia Bibi case”.

Youths should get married in their own religion’

KARACHI: The youths should obey the teachings of their religion and get married in their own religious community, Baldia Town Parish Priest Father Khaliq Saleem of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate said on Sunday.
He expressed these views after the Sunday prayers while talking to Daily Times about a recent dispute that broke out after a Christian boy eloped with a Muslim girl residing in Baldia Town. However, according to reports, the Christian boy had later accepted Islam and married the girl.
The father said the situation was under control and the Muslim community was completely cooperating with St Luke’s Church.

PARIS: President Nicolas Sarkozy's top diplomatic adviser branded Iran a "fascist state" in a meeting with senior US officials last year, according to documents leaked on Sunday by website WikiLeaks.
Jean-David Levitte made the comment in talks on September 16, 2009 with US Assistant Secretary of State Philip Gordon, according to a copy of a US memo published on the website of the British daily The Guardian.
Levitte warned that Iran's response to US President Barack Obama's bid to engage it on dialogue over the future of its alleged nuclear weapons programme was a "farce" and regretted that Moscow had taken it seriously.

WikiLeaks release endangers 'countless' lives: US

WASHINGTON: The Obama administration is warning online whistleblower WikiLeaks that its expected imminent release of classified state department documents will put "countless" lives at risk, threaten global counterterorism operations and jeopardize US relations with its allies.
In a highly unusual step reflecting the administration's grave concerns about the ramifications of the move, the state department late on Saturday released a letter from its top lawyer to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange telling him publication of the documents would be illegal and demanding that he stop it.
In the letter, state department legal adviser Harold Koh said the publication of some 250,000 secret diplomatic cables by WikiLeaks will "place at risk the lives of countless innocent individuals," "place at risk on-going military operations," and "place at risk on-going cooperation between countries."

WASHINGTON/NEW DELHI: The United States asked its diplomats to spy on their counterparts at the United Nations, including Indian, Chinese and Pakistani officials. Washington was trying to coax and cadge enriched uranium from Pakistan as recently as 2009.
Saudi King Abdullah thinks President Zardari is a disaster for Pakistan. Israel's spy chief was distraught about Pakistan being overrun by extremists and thought Musharraf was the best bet for the country. Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi never goes anywhere without his Ukrainian nurse, "a voluptuous blonde" who may also be his lover.
These are just some of the vignettes to emerge from the first cache of Wikileaks' documents detailing Washington's assessment foreign leaders and situations, and its pursuit of diplomatic objectives, revelations that threaten to undermine US information gathering practices and its ties with friends, allies, and adversaries.

Basirhat (West Bengal): Wooing the Muslims and the poorer sections of society ahead of next year's state assembly polls, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Saturday said only the Left front protected their interests.
"Congress does not protect the interests of the poor. Only the red flag (of the communists who lead the Left Front) protects your interests. Some of you have misunderstood us and left us. I appeal to you to please come back to our fold. We will walk together in the path of development," Bhattacharjee said at a public rally here in North 24 Parganas district.
Ridiculing the call for political change given by Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, Bhattacharjee asked: "What is the change that they are talking about? We have undertaken land reforms and given land to the poor. Do they mean by change that they will return to the big landholders and landlords the land that we have taken away from them?"
He accused Trinamool of spreading misinformation and falsehood.

Wikileaks' latest release includes 3,038 cables from New Delhi

WASHINGTON (PTI) Of the quarter million top secret US documents released by the whistleblower website WikiLeaks, as many as 3,038 classified cables are from the US Embassy in New Delhi.
The documents are being published by several media outlets across the globe today, despite repeated insistence from the US that it may put at risk many lives.
Ahead of the release of these documents, the State Department had reached out to India warning it about the impending release.
"We have reached out to India to warn them about a possible release of documents," State Department Spokesman P J Crowley said.
The United States has termed it as illegal and has said that these would effect its relationship with its friends and allies.

Al-Qaida claims attack on Yemen Shiites

CAIRO: Al-Qaida's affiliate in Yemen has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing killing Shiite tribesmen in northern Yemen.
In a statement appearing yesterday on extremist websites, al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula described the Shiites as "despicable plants" to be uprooted, according to the SITE Intelligence Unit, which monitors such sites.
On Wednesday, a suicide car bomber struck a convoy of Shiites in northern Yemen killing 17.
Extremist Sunnis despise Shiites and consider them heretics.
Though an estimated 15-30 per cent of the population is Shiite, Yemen has been spared the sectarian warfare once common in Iraq.
The Hawthi Shiite tribesman in Yemen, however, have waged an on-and-off struggle against the government for the last six years.

KOLKATA: Moderate Kashmiri separatist Mirwaiz Umar Farooq's remarks at a seminar in Kolkata provoked protests, with BJP's youth wing activists blocking his way and throwing eggs at his car on Sunday.
The incident came three days after a group of Kashmiri Pandits and right-wing activists assaulted him and another moderate separatist, Bilal Lone, at a seminar in Chandigarh on Thursday. The activists had punched and slapped the Mirwaiz there and vandalised the seminar venue. In his speech at the Kolkata seminar titled 'Kashmir: A Way Out', he described Kashmir as a ''disputed land'' and said the ''the Indian government should realise the strong sentiments of the Valley's people for azadi''.

‘Religious leaders can promote organ donation'

NEW DELHI: Expressing disappointment over the dismal rate of organ donation in the country, Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Saturday asked the religious leaders to promote this noble cause.
He said religion had a role to play in promoting organ donation. Hindus accepted the concept of organ donation as an investment for an able bodied individual in the “next birth.” Muslims may not buy this argument as they did not believe in re-birth. “Religious leaders have come out to promote a cause or set things right if things go wrong. But, in this case, they too have failed,” Mr. Azad said.
Speaking at the Sixth World, and first Indian, Organ Donation Day function here, Mr. Azad said there was need to create awareness among the people regarding organ donation. This could save lakhs of lives. Altruism should be the sole motivator for organ donation, he added.

Naxals, terrorists can’t be patriots, says Shivraj

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said that the Naxalites and terrorists, who stood by the bullet rather than the ballot, could not be patriots or revolutionaries. He further stressed that the State will be able to supply round-the-clock electricity by 2013.
“Those talking of bullet instead of ballot cannot be termed as patriots or revolutionaries as their major aim is to capture power in Delhi,” said Chouhan, the first non-Congress Chief Minister to complete five years in power on November 29.
CM was reacting to the remark made by celebrity author, Arundhati Roy, who has recently termed Naxalites as patriots. He said not only just Naxalites; she has also termed terrorists in Kashmir as revolutionaries and CM demanded stern action against her. “If those involved in such acts are termed as patriots or revolutionaries then no country in the world would be able to run its affairs,” he said.

Geelani’s son back from Pak after 12 yrs

Srinagar : Hardline Hurriyat chief Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s son Nayeem Geelani has permanently returned from Pakistan — after 12 years. He had to return, says Hurriyat, after India refused to extend his visa.
“The only other option Nayeem Sahib had was to get the citizenship of Pakistan, which he didn’t want to do. Hence, he chose to return,” Hurriyat spokesman Ayaz Akber told The Indian Express.
Akber said Nayeem had no political ambitions and would go back to his job as a medical practitioner.
Nayeem, who was an MBBS in Kashmir, did Masters in Surgery during his stay in Pakistan.
Last year, Nayeem had suffered a heart attack in Pakistan following which he had to undergo an emergency operation. Even though there were indications from the Centre that Geelani would be provided with a passport to visit his son in Pakistan, the hawk retracted at the last minute, fearing that Islamabad might try to persuade him to abandon his hardline stand on Kashmir solution and force him to join hands with the moderate Hurriyat.

Woman demands justice for son

TAIF: The mother of a 22-year-old Saudi who was stabbed to death during an orgy of violence fueled by drink has called for her son’s attacker to be handed the death sentence.
The woman’s son was stabbed once in the neck and twice in the back by a 26-year-old Saudi, who has served time in prison for numerous crimes including robbery. The man was recently released from jail in Ramadan after qualifying for a royal pardon.
Five Saudis and a Pakistani man — all bootleggers — have been arrested in relation to the murder. All of those involved, including the victim, had gathered at a furnished apartment in front of the Children’s Hospital in Taif to drink alcohol.

In a phone interview, Shahrzad Mir-Qolikhan said she was held in solitary confinement for a week.
She added that on October 23 she was removed from the compound and taken to a solitary housing unit colloquially known as SHU and held there for a week.
She said that she was confined to a cell where the most dangerous criminals are kept, noting that she was never told why she had to go through the ordeal.
She was also refused access to her legal papers, including letters to the president of Iran and the United States, the report said.

Khaleda Zia loses posh Dhaka home

Dhaka : Bangladesh's apex court today rejected main opposition BNP chief Khaleda Zia's plea to retain her posh cantonment residence from where she was evicted recently.
"The main 'civil petition' and the petition seeking the injunction (for status quo of the house) is hereby dismissed as it was not pressed" chief justice ABM Khairul Haque said after 90 minutes of arguments at the crowded appellate division of the Supreme Court.
Court officials and witnesses said during the protracted arguments Zia's lawyers, instead of hearing the main petition, the court preferred the hearing on a supplementary contempt of court charge against the November 13 "eviction" of their client from the posh house as she was ousted while the issue was pending before the apex court.
The court, however, ordered hearing of the contempt charge tomorrow but lawyers said it would help Zia little to regain the possession as her main petition to retain it was rejected.

Turkey did not invite India on Afghan meet to appease Pak

Washington : India was deliberately kept out of the Turkey-sponsored meeting on Afghanistan earlier this year to address the "sensitivities" of Pakistan, according to WikiLeaks cable.
Reflecting Islamabad's insistence at every international fora that New Delhi be kept out of any meeting on Afghanistan, a top Turkish diplomat told US officials early this year that India was kept out to address the concerns of Pakistan, WikiLeaks said.
At a meeting with the US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, William Burns; Rauf Engin Soysal who then was the Turkey's Deputy Under-Secretary for Bilateral Political Affairs responsible for the Middle East, South Asia and Africa; said Turkey had not invited India to the Afghan neighbours summit in deference to Pak sensitivities.
Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, Afghan President Hamid Karzai met in Istanbul for a Turkish-sponsored talks to discuss cooperation against extremists in Afghanistan earlier this year.

Saudi King wanted the US to attack Iran to prevent it from going nuclear and the US wanted to remove weapon grade fuel from Pakistani nuclear reactor are among the revelations in the state department documents leaked on Sunday by whistle-blowing website Wikileaks.
Some 250,000 classified US documents procured by WikiLeaks detail a wide variety of secret diplomatic episodes and incidences of backroom bargaining like a standoff with Pakistan over nuclear fuel and the hacking of Google systems by the Chinese government, the New York Times reported.
"A cache of a quarter-million confidential American diplomatic cables, most of them from the past three years, provides an unprecedented look at backroom bargaining by embassies around the world, brutally candid views of foreign leaders and frank assessments of nuclear and terrorist threats," The Times said in its lead story.

US suspected China pressing Kyrgyzstan: Leaked files

WASHINGTON: The United States confronted China on information it tried to pressure Kyrgyzstan to pull the rug from a US base, possibly due to a dispute over Guantanamo detainees, a leaked document said Sunday.
In a confidential cable last year, released by WikiLeaks, a US diplomat quoted Kyrgyz officials saying that China had offered three billion dollars to close Manas air base, a key US conduit for the war in Afghanistan.
US Ambassador Tatiana Gfoeller said she asked her Chinese counterpart, Zhang Yannian, about the allegations and that he became so flustered he briefly lost his ability to converse in Russian.
Zhang "ridiculed the notion of such a deal, he did not deny it outright," she wrote.
"'It would take three dollars from every Chinese person' to pay for it," she quoted him as saying. "'If our people found out, there'd be a revolution.'"

Fire reported at US Islamic center; no injuries

CORVALLIS (Oregon): A fire broke out an Islamic center near Oregon State University today - two days after a Somali-born teenager and former student was arrested and charged with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction. No injuries have been reported.
Authorities in Corvallis told The Oregonian they are investigating the fire at the Salman Alfarisi Islamic Center. They have not said how it started.
Yosof Wanly, imam at the center, said 80 per cent of the center's office was burned, but the worship areas were untouched.
Wanly said he has been advised by friends to take his family out of their home, and is debating whether to do so.
On Friday, federal authorities arrested 19-year-old Mohamed Osman Mohamud, of Corvallis, after they say he tried blowing up a van that he believed was loaded with explosives at a Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Portland.
The bomb was a fake supplied by undercover agents who had been communicating with Mohamud, and the public was never in danger.

NEW DELHI: With two visits to Jammu and Kashmir and scores of discussions involving a cross-section of people in the State over the past month, the three government-appointed interlocutors are treading cautiously on their path of putting in place a framework that will lead to the political settlement of the Kashmir problem.
“Our aim is to work out a dialogue structure — through the widest possible consultations with all shades of political opinion — which will be uninterrupted and uninterruptible no matter who tries to break it,” said Radha Kumar, Delhi Policy Group trustee and one of the interlocutors.
The other two interlocutors are senior journalist Dileep Padgaonkar and Information Commissioner M. M. Ansari.

AFSPA- armed army blames J& Kcops for the atrocities
THE INDIAN Army has done no wrong in Jammu and Kashmir.
Rather, it is the J& K Police which were either biased or work under pressure from militants. Rape victims in J& K also falsely implicate army personnel to malign the image of the defence forces.
Well, these are some of the reasons why the ministry of defence ( MoD) has not permitted the prosecution of any of its officers or men for alleged crimes committed by them in J& K in the last two decades, the army has proferred as explanation for the first time.
Replying to an RTI application by M AIL T ODAY , the army has revealed that 42 cases have been received by the MoD since 1990 from the J& K government requesting sanction to institute legal proceedings against army personnel, but no such request has ever been accepted.
