Kill Americans, says Yemeni cleric Awlaki

Nov 09 2010

Cairo : A US-born radical Yemeni cleric linked to previous attacks on the US called for Muslims around world to kill Americans in a new video message posted on radical websites Monday.

Anwar al-Awlaki said since all Americans are the enemy, clerics don’t need to issue any special fatwas allowing them to be killed. “Don’t consult with anybody in killing the Americans, fighting the devil doesn’t require consultation or prayers seeking divine guidance. They are the party of the devils,” he said. “We are two opposites who will never come together.”

In the 23-minute Arabic message “Make it known and clear to mankind,” Awlaki said that for Americans and Muslims it was “either us or them.” Born in New Mexico, Awlaki has has been tied to several attacks or attempted attacks on US soil. Since he returned to Yemen, Awlaki has moved beyond inspiring militants to becoming an active al-Qaeda operative.

On Friday, the al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula claimed responsibility for sending parcel bombs addressed to the US which was thwarted a week ago. Awlaki also attacked rulers in the Arab world, particularly Yemen, describing them as corrupt and he called on religious scholars to declare them “non-Muslims” for betraying Muslim people. The only way Muslims are going to protect themselves from the threat of the infidels is by supporting the “mujahedeen,” he said.

Pak Taliban abduct, threaten to kill kin of Frontier Gandhi

Omer Farooq Khan

Nov 9, 2010

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani Taliban have threatened to kill Frontier Gandhi Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan's grandnephew, Ajmal Khan, if the government didn't release its top commanders captured during Pakistan army's campaigns against it by November 20.

Khan, who has been in Taliban captivity since September 7, urged the government to fulfil Taliban demands. "I appeal to my students, teachers and sincere workers of the Awami National Party to press the government to fulfil the ordinary demands made by these people ,'' Khan said in a Taliban video released on Monday.Khan is vice-chancellor of Peshawar's Islamia College University.

In an earlier video in October , Khan had said he was abducted for being Asfandyar Wali Khan's cousin. Asfandyar is the chief of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's ruling Awami National Party, which has been supporting military operations against militants.

Khan is the grandson of Khan Sahib, Frontier Gandhi's elder brother, who was dismissed as NWFP chief minister for refusing to salute the Pakistani flag in 1947.

Following the emergence of the second video, teachers of 19 universities across Khyber-Pakahtunkhwa went on strike for an indefinite period, PTI added. Khan is second vice chancellor kidnapped in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa following a recent spurt in militancy. Earlier , Lutfullah Kakakhel, Vice Chancellor of Kohat University of Science and Technology, was kidnapped by militants. He was released after remaining in captivity for seven months.

Libya arrests ally of reformist Gaddafi son: Report

Nov 9, 2010

ALGIERS: The deputy head of a media group founded by a son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has been arrested, local media said on Monday, in an apparent escalation of a power struggle inside the country's ruling elite.

Reform-minded Saif al-Islam Gaddafi is seen as a possible successor to his father as ruler of the oil exporting state but he has been waging a turf war with a conservative old guard within his father's entourage.

Parts of the Al Ghad media group founded by Saif al-Islam have come under pressure in the past week, with the print version of the Oea newspaper suspended and the Libya Press news agency saying some of its journalists have been arrested.

"For the fourth day in a row, the Libyan internal security agency is continuing to summon and detain journalists and contributors of Libya Press," the news agency said in a statement on its Internet site.

"The list of those detained has so far reached 20 journalists and contributors, including the deputy managing-director of Al Ghad group, Fawzi Batamr, for reasons that remain unclear."

The news agency had said on Sunday that 10 of its reporters had been detained. There was no confirmation of the arrests from Libyan officials.

The infighting in Libya, home to Africa's biggest proven oil reserves, is watched closely by Western oil majors including BP, Eni and Exxon Mobil.

They have poured billions of dollars into Libyan oil and gas projects and some analysts say their investments could be jeopardised by shifts in the political landscape.

Oklahoma judge blocks anti-Islam amendment

Nov 9, 2010

WASHINGTON: The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) announced on Monday that a federal judge in Oklahoma has temporarily blocked an anti-Islam state ballot measure (SQ 755) that would have amended that state's constitution to forbid judges from considering Islamic principles (Shariah) or international law when making a ruling.

US District Judge Vicki Miles-LaGrange of the United States District Court, Western District of Oklahoma, on Monday granted a temporary restraining order blocking certification of the recently-passed ballot measure by the Oklahoma State Board of Elections.

Judge Miles-LaGrange also scheduled a hearing on Nov. 22 for arguments as to whether she should grant a preliminary injunction that would extend the restraining order until a final determination is made in the case.

Kashmiri militant groups still recruiting in Pakistan

By Aleem Maqbool

Nov 9, 2010

"There are different types of duties I can now be sent to do," says the man we have come to meet, but whose identity we have to conceal.

"I can be kept here in the reserves, be asked to recruit new members, or they can send me across into Indian-held Kashmir for jihad," he says.

Until the spring, this 25-year-old had been studying engineering; now he is a militant.

As he describes why he left his studies, he quotes from the Koran and repeats justifications for his choice, which have clearly been taught to him.

"While I was at university, I started going to sermons given by preachers and, thank God, I joined a jihadi group," he says.

Headley in Pak soon after 9/ 11

Nov 9, 2010

DAVID Coleman Headley was sent to Pakistan by US authorities to work for them months after 9/11. The US ignored warning that Headley sympathised with radical Islamic groups, a media report said on Monday.

According to court records and inquiries, Headley, a small-time drug dealer and informant, arrived in Pakistan in December 2001 and began training with terrorists in February 2002 on “the merits of waging jihad”. Eventually, he played a key role in the Mumbai attacks that left 166 people dead, The New York Times reported.

Headley’s undetected trips to India have prompted a direct security dialogue between the Union home ministry and the US department of homeland security to check such incidents in the future.

Omar, who was the only Chief Minister invited to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s private dinner on Sunday night in honour of Obama, said the President’s statement that the US could not impose a solution was a “telling indicator” that for resolving the vexed issue of Kashmir, India and Pakistan would have to find a solution acceptable to the majority of people of J&K.

These traditions stress the value of dialogue and tolerance, which have become key principles in the approach of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE – an approach based on love and interaction with one another.

He highlighted that the Mosque is an architectural landmark that the State and the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, in particular, is proud of; the leadership is giving it attention because it represents a foundation upon which to build and develop culture and thought in the United Arab Emirates.

Obama's visit to Indonesia mixes pride with a dose of reality

By Chico Harlan

Nov 9, 2010

JAKARTA, INDONESIA - During its two-year wait for a visit from President Obama, Indonesia found other ways to celebrate the country's most famous former resident. Indonesian authors produced dozens of Obama books, one of them 5,400 pages. A lookalike starred in a commercial for heartburn medication. Some 12,000 Indonesians applied for a 14-day Obama-centric vacation package, with chances to meet Obama's former barber and gym teacher - all while television cameras followed the action, filming a reality show.

Obama's arrival Tuesday in Jakarta, then, restores a bit of authenticity to a relationship that has grown increasingly complex and outdated, held together by boyhood ties but not presidential ones.

German Protestant bishop warns of religious fundamentalism

Nov 9, 2010

Hanover - A senior Protestant bishop in Germany warned on Saturday that fundamentalism was on the rise globally, in Christianity as well as Islam.

"This fundamentalism, in which one's own (beliefs) are considered an absolute for everybody, carries a potential for violence that is not limited to Islam," said Martin Schindehuette, the German Evangelical Church (EKD) authority on foreign affairs.

"Religions exist to contribute to peace," Schindehuettte added, in an interview with German Press Agency dpa.

The bishop referred to the persecution of Christians in Iraq and Indonesia, where he said a previously moderate form of Islam was being influenced by Arabic countries.

"But we are also currently witnessing a fundamentalization in Christianity," Schindehuette warned, referring to missionary trends in Africa, Latin America and Korea, as well as political tendencies in the United States.

Obama backs India UNSC seat to counter China: US media

Nov 9, 2010

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama's announcement of support for India's permanent membership in the UN Security Council (UNSC) is seen by large sections of the US media as an attempt to counter China.

The influential New York Times said that by endorsing India for a permanent seat Obama had "signalled the United States' intention to create a deeper partnership of the world's two largest democracies that would expand commercial ties and check the influence of an increasingly assertive China".

The Washington Post agreed, saying it was "a powerful endorsement of India's growing economic power and global aspirations, but one likely to anger China and Pakistan".

Lashkar-e-Taiba cadres sucked into al Qaeda orbit

Nov 9, 2010

LONDON: David Headley joined the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant group hoping to fight in Kashmir; the Pakistani-American ended up scouting out targets for the Mumbai attacks and helping al Qaeda plan a strike on Denmark.

Headley’s story, contained in confidential Indian government documents, casts fresh light on the November 2008 attack on Mumbai, where US President Barack Obama paid tribute to the victims during a visit to the city this weekend.

It suggests that LeT cadres are increasingly being drawn into the orbit of al Qaeda and its affiliates and slipping out of the control of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency, as the once cohesive group becomes more fractured and more receptive to al Qaeda’s global Islamist agenda.

Zardari says 26/ 11 hit peace efforts

Nov 9, 2010

PAKISTAN President Asif Ali Zardari has admitted that the 26/ 11 strike has undermined efforts for peace. He said his government is “ cooperating in unearthing and bringing to justice the perpetrators of militant acts”. “ The democratic civil government went out of the way in our peace overtures towards India. It would have been most helpful if our initiatives had been welcomed and responded to in a positive manner. The Mumbai attack has undermined efforts for peace. Pakistan is cooperating in unearthing and bringing to justice the perpetrators of militant acts,” Zardari said.

He added that Pakistan stood for peace in the region and the world, and wanted early resumption of the composite dialogue process.

Zardari said Pakistan would not let its soil to be used by the terrorists against any country. Adding that a blame game would not serve the cause of the war against militancy, he emphasised that the international community “ should also understand and appreciate our determination to fight militancy”.

PM talks tough on Pak with Obama

By Dipanjan Roy Chaudhury

Nov 9, 2010

PRIME MINISTER Manmohan Singh on Monday made a valiant attempt to exorcise the ghost of Sharm-el-Sheikh that has haunted his Pakistan policy since the fateful joint statement at the Egyptian resort town in July 2009.

The joint press conference with President Barack Obama provided a perfect platform to Singh to outline his Pakistan policy. Singh has been facing flak ever since he decided to delink action on terrorism from the composite dialogue process at Sharm-el-Sheikh despite Islamabad dilly-dallying on bringing perpetrators of 26/11 to justice.

With Obama by his side, however, the PM sought a course correction. He talked tough and made it clear that as long as the existing “terror machine” in Pakistan against India is active, it would be difficult to continue the dialogue.

The US President described Kashmir as a “longstanding dispute between India and Pakistan” in a press conference in New Delhi. The separatist leaders lost no time in welcoming it.

The chairman of the hardline Hurriyat Conference faction, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, posted his reaction on YouTube minutes after Obama’s statement and said the US President has talked about the reality that the government of India denies.

ISLAMABAD: Within minutes of United States President Barack Obama expressing support for India's claim for a permanent seat in any reformed United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Pakistan on Monday said New Delhi's conduct with its neighbours and “continued flagrant violation” of UNSC resolutions on Jammu & Kashmir discredited its aspirations of being recognised as a global power.

Taking due note of Mr. Obama's statement, the Pakistan Foreign Office in a statement said this “endorsement of India's bid” for a permanent seat on the UNSC would add to the complexity of the Council's reforms process.

“Pakistan hopes that the U.S. — which contributed immensely to the founding of the UN system and, in particular, its Charter principles — will take a moral view and not base itself on any temporary expediencies or exigencies of power politics.”

Careful on Pak: India has biggest stake in its success

Y P Rajesh

Nov 9, 2010

Mumbai : Placing the onus squarely on the shoulders of what he called a rising India, US President Barack Obama made a fresh push for reconciliation and peace between New Delhi and Islamabad saying that, more than any other country, India had the biggest stake in the stability and success of Pakistan.

In a forceful articulation of this new nuance of Washington’s advocacy for détente in South Asia, Obama urged the neighbours to develop trust, begin talking about less controversial issues first and then move on to the tough negotiations that have bedeviled their ties for more than half a century.

Amitav Ranjan

New Delhi : Islamabad wants New Delhi to hand over soap, shampoo, combs, razor, mirror, detergent, flour bags, pickle bottles and utensils, among others, used by the terrorists to its Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) or else, the case against the accused would weaken.

The latest dossier from Pakistan on 26/11 attacks lists 14 articles for which certified copies of seizure memos should be sent to the FIA for production before the Rawalpindi Trial Court.

“The Indian government may also examine the possibility of production of these articles along with their attesting witnesses in the Trial Court in Rawalpindi as evidence against accused,” says Pakistan Dossier 13 with the Indian Home Ministry.

Israel asks US to keep military strike option open on Iran

Nov 9, 2010

Jerusalem/Melbourne : Israel has told US to keep a military strike option open to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons, a suggestion rejected by Washington.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made the suggestion reportedly to the US Vice President Joe Biden during talks in New Orleans on Sunday.

"Tehran would be determined to produce nuclear weapons unless it thinks a military strike is a real option." Israeli media reported Netanyahu as having told Biden quoting high officials.

But, Tel Aviv call for a "credible military threat" was rejected by the US Defence Secretary Robert Gates who said that international sanctions were hurting Tehran severely than Iran anticipated.

US support for India's UNSC bid adds to complexity: Pak

Nov 9, 2010

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Monday said US President Barack Obama's endorsement of India's bid for permanent membership of the UN Security Council would add to the "complexity" of efforts to revamp the world body's most powerful organ.

In a statement issued shortly after Obama backed India's efforts to get permanent membership of the UN Security Council during an address to Indian Parliament, foreign office spokesman Abdul Basit indicated that the US should revisit its stance and "take a moral view" instead of basing itself on "any temporary expediency".

"Pakistan believes that US endorsement of India's bid for its permanent seat in the Security Council adds to the complexity of the process of reforms of the council," Basit said in a statement issued by his office.

Pakistan is not doing enough in war on terror: Kabul

Nov 9, 2010

KABUL: The Afghan government Monday accused Pakistan of failing to help bring peace to the region, saying “certain circles” in its neighbour were funding an insurgency plaguing both countries.

The insurgency that has been raging in Afghanistan for more than nine years was likely to continue unless Pakistan “joined the world” to stop it, Waheed Omer, spokesman for President Hamid Karzai, said.

“The stance of the Afghan government has always been this: Pakistan can play a very effective role in bringing peace to Afghanistan, the region and Pakistan itself,” he told reporters.

Interpol urged to combat ‘radicalization process’

By BRIAN MURPHY

Nov 9, 2010

DUBAI: Security officials around the world need more grass-roots strategies to understand the “radicalization process” and win over extremists with brains-over-brawn outreach such as moderate clerics, said a report Monday at an Interpol gathering in Qatar.

The paper — compiled by former counterterrorism experts from agencies including the CIA and FBI — urges authorities to expand traditional intelligence and investigation work to include programs that directly challenge the ideology of groups such as Al-Qaeda and other factions.

Such efforts are not new. Countries such as Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Indonesia use various methods to try to sway the views of Islamic extremists. The US military also tried to win over captured insurgents in Iraq.
