Punjab: Christian woman sentenced to death for blasphemy

For the first time, a woman is sentenced to death in Pakistan for this kind of “offence”. The blasphemy law was introduced in 1986 by then Pakistani dictator Zia-ul Haq and since then it has become a tool for discrimination and violence. Part of the Pakistan Penal Code, the law imposes life in prison for defiling the Qur’an and death for insulting Muhammad.
Islamabad (AsiaNews/Agencies) – Pakistan has “crossed a line” in sentencing a Christian woman to death for blasphemy. Asia Bibi, a 37-year-old farm worker mother of two, was convicted of committing blasphemy before her fellow workers during a heated discussion about religion in the village of Ittanwali in June last year.
Some of the women workers had reportedly been pressuring Bibi to renounce her Christian faith and accept Islam. During one discussion, Bibi responded by speaking of how Jesus had died on the cross for the sins of humanity and asking the Muslim women what Muhammad had done for them.
The Muslim women took offence and began beating Bibi. Afterwards she was locked in a room. According to Release International, a mob reportedly formed and “violently abused” her and her children.
The charity, which supports persecuted Christians, said that blasphemy charges were brought against Bibi because of pressure from local Muslim leaders.
Release International’s chief executive, Andy Dipper, expressed his shock at Sunday’s ruling.
“Pakistan has crossed a line in passing the death sentence on a woman for blasphemy,” he said.
In addition to the death sentence, Bibi was also fined the equivalent for an unskilled worker of two and a half years’ wages.
Another Christian woman, Martha Bibi (no relation to Asia), is also on trial in Lahore for blasphemy.
According to the National Commission on Justice and Peace (NCJP) of the Catholic Church, between 1986 and August 2009, at least 974 people have been charged for defiling the Qur’an or insulting the Prophet Muhammad. They include 479 Muslims, 340 Ahmadis, 119 Christians, 14 Hindus and 10 from other religions.
The blasphemy law has often been used as a pretext for personal attacks or vendettas as well as extra-judicial murders. Overall, 33 people have died this way at the hands of individuals or crazed mobs.

LONDON: French First Lady Carla Bruni's security has been stepped up in the wake of intelligence inputs that she may be a "priority target" of terror group al-Qaida's assassination plot, a media report said on Tuesday.
Security services believe President Nicolas Sarkozy's 42-year-old wife is now "high up" on the al-Qaida hitlist of potential VIP victims in France, the Daily Mail quoted the French website 'Pure People' as saying.
In fact, fears for Bruni's safety come after al-Qaida founder Osama bin Laden issued a chilling personal threat to kill French citizens in revenge for France backing the war in Afghanistan and their new law banning the burqa. The al-Qaida chief released an audio tape last week: "It is a simple equation: If you kill, you will be killed."
The French website claimed it had information that the Presidential Protection Team had now received "credible intelligence" that the threat to the couple had increased. "Her schedule is randomly changed and even her family and friends are not being told where she is going until she arrives. From now on, neither will she travel in the same car or other means of transport as her husband," the website said. Bruni's immediate family were also being given extra security details , the website said.
The security alert comes a month after France's domestic intelligence cheif Bernard Squarcini warned the recent burqa ban had ''seriously increased" the threat of a major terrorist attack on French soil and that ''all the red lights were flashing" .

Fifteen militants killed in Orakzai airstrike

KALAYA: Warplanes bombed militant positions in Pakistan’s northwestern tribal area of Orakzai, killing 15 militants and destroying three hideouts, security officials in the region said.
At least 20 militants were also wounded in the assault, reports said.
More than 600 militants and 18 security personnel have died during the military operation in the tribal area.
There was no independent confirmation of the latest incident as the warzone is remote and out of bounds for media.

BAGHDAD: A spate of early morning bomb and mortar attacks on homes of Christians in Baghdad Wednesday left at least three people dead and 26 wounded, an interior ministry official said.
“Two mortar shells and 10 homemade bombs targeted the homes of Christians in different neighbourhoods of Baghdad between 6:00 am and 8:00 am,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
“The toll is three dead and 26 wounded.”
The attacks come 10 days after 44 Christian worshippers, two priests and seven security forces personnel died during the seizure of a Baghdad cathedral by extremist militants and the ensuing shootout when it was stormed by troops.
On Tuesday, three homes in the Mansur district of western Baghdad belonging to Christians were firebombed without causing any casualties, an interior ministry source said.
On November 3, al Qaeda claimed responsibility for the Baghdad cathedral bloodbath and warned it would further step up attacks on Christians.
The extremists said they had carried out the church attack to force the release of converts to Islam allegedly being detained by the Coptic Church in Egypt. Days afterwards it declared Christians everywhere “legitimate targets.”
A senior Iraqi clergyman said at the weekend Iraq’s Christians should leave the country or face being killed at the hands of al Qaeda. “If they stay they will be finished, one by one,” Archbishop Athanasios Dawood told the BBC.
Iraq’s premier however on Tuesday cautioned other countries not to encourage Christians to abandon their homeland, after France took in dozens of people wounded in the October 31 cathedral attack.
On his first visit to the church targeted on October 31, Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said that at a meeting with Pope Benedict XVI in 2008 he had asked the pontiff “not to let the east be emptied of Christians, nor the West of Muslims.”
“The countries that have welcomed the victims … of this attack (on the church) have done a noble thing, but that should not encourage emigration,” he said on a visit to the Syriac Catholic cathedral where the massacre occurred.
Thirty-four Iraqi Christians and a Muslim guard wounded in the incident flew in to France on Monday for admission to hospitals for treatment.
French Immigration Minister Eric Besson has said this fitted France’s “tradition of asylum” to take them in, and that asylum would be “handed out generously” to those who seek it.
France plans a second evacuation flight in the coming weeks to bring out a further 93 Christians.
Besson said that 1,300 Iraqi Christians had been granted asylum in France since autumn 2007, an acceptance rate of 85 percent for asylum-seekers from among the community.
An estimated 800,000 Christians lived in Iraq before the US-led invasion of 2003 but that number has since shrunk to around 500,000 in the face of repeated attacks against their community and churches.
Christians in Baghdad have now dwindled to around 150,000, a third of their former population in the capital.

Chechnya "needs neither good, nor bad Wahabis," Kadyrov said. "Such an approach must be applied everywhere. Otherwise, they will again start moving at the slightest relaxation on the part of the authorities. But, I give my word, not in Chechnya," the Chechen leader said.
Grozny (Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov has said that Wahhabism cannot be eradicated with half-measures.
"Wahabis did not come along today or yesterday. They have been around for a long time. And prominent Islamic religious figures noted that they bring woes, sufferings, destruction and shed blood," Kadyrov said after a prayer service at a mosque, according to the Chechen government's website.

Obama to visit Jakarta mosque, address Muslims

JAKARTA: President Barack Obama was to visit Southeast Asia's biggest mosque Wednesday and give a major speech on US-Indonesian relations in a follow-up to last year's appeal to the Muslim world from Cairo.
Obama's speech aims to engage Indonesians in their embrace of democracy and the free market following the fall of the Suharto dictatorship in 1998, as well as following on the themes of his Cairo address.
The much-anticipated visit to the Istiqlal Mosque and speech at the University of Indonesia were the last stops on Obama's twice-postponed visit to Indonesia.
The trip was cut short by several hours as Obama sought to outrace a cloud of volcanic ash spewed out by Mount Merapi in Central Java, which has severely disrupted air travel across the region.

Afghanistan, Pakistan pledge cooperation against extremism

KABUL: Afghanistan and Pakistan have vowed to work more closely to combat extremism, Hamid Karzai’s office said Wednesday after talks between the Afghan president and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.
Karzai’s office said in a statement that the pair spoke by telephone on Tuesday evening and discussed areas where the two neighbours could cooperate more, including on economic ties.
“Both sides emphasised more cooperation and coordination between security institutions of the two countries in the war against terrorism,” the statement said.
Karzai also invited Gilani to come to Afghanistan on an official visit for further talks, which the Pakistani prime minister accepted, it added.

5 Pak-trained jihadis held in Paris

French police have arrested five alleged Islamists in Paris and at Charles de Gaulle airport suspected of having trained in Pakistani-Afghan tribal areas, a source close to the enquiry said.
Those arrested are "interesting people in the context of the recently mentioned global threat" against France, the source said, adding they were suspected of having trained as militants in western Pakistan, near Afghanistan. Two were arrested as they arrived from the Pakistani-Afghan border area on a flight via Egypt and three in Paris at the request of an anti-terrorist judge. Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden warned France last month that its planned ban on the burqa in public places and its involvement in the war in Afghanistan justified violence against its nationals.

‘Beggar’ govt not acceptable: Nawaz

KHAIRPUR/LAHORE: A government with a begging bowl is not acceptable, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz chief Nawaz Sharif said on Tuesday.
“The incumbent government cannot control the crises in the country, while we don’t even accept a government, which has extended a begging hand. The government did not take the opposition on board while signing an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Therefore, the prime minister should not expect any support from the opposition,” Nawaz said while addressing a public gathering. He asked the government to depart from anti-public policies. “We will oppose all such policies,” he announced.
“We want to bring a peaceful green revolution in the country. I’m searching for a team that is committed to bringing about this revolution. The country can’t afford more oppression, tyranny and violence,” he underlined.

'Heart' of al-Qaida in Afghan-Pakistan border: Gates

KUALA LUMPUR: Defence secretary Robert Gates said Tuesday the "heart" of al-Qaida remained in the Afghan-Pakistan border area even as it spread its influence to the Arabian peninsula and northern Africa.
As al-Qaida's leaders continued to operate out of the border area, "they provide the guidance, they provide the priorities, they provide legitimacy to other al-Qaida affiliates that are developing in other places, including in the Arabian peninsula, in Yemen in particular and in northern Africa, in the Maghreb," Gates told reporters.
Gates, who met defence minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, is in Malaysia for a one-day visit to bolster defence ties amid concern in the region over China's growing economic and naval power.

Nearly 59,000 families migrated from Kashmir due to militancy

Nearly 59,000 families are reported to have migrated from Kashmir following the outbreak of militancy in the 1990s and none of them has returned to the Valley till now, the Government said on Tuesday.
“Due to the onset of militancy in the 1990’s, 58,697 families are reported to have migrated from the Valley and are temporarily settled in Jammu, Delhi and other parts of the country,” Minister of State for Home Ajay Maken said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
Giving details of the various measures taken for rehabilitation of Kashmiri migrants, he said 200 flats have been constructed at Sheikpora in Budgam district.
Two model clusters in Matttan and Kheer Bhavani containing temporary shelters for Kashmiri migrants have 18 flats and 100 one-room tenements respectively, Maken said.
Maken said no family has returned to the Valley and it is not possible to indicate any time line for the same.

Unka naam hamesha bhool jaati hoon, exclaims 11-year-old Chandni,when asked whom she had met.Although none of the girls can correctly pronounce the First Ladys name,they are enjoying the attention they are getting. She gave us sandwiches to eat and said we should keep away from chips and unhealthy food something which she said she tells her own children too, says 10-year-old Abeeda.Ask them what they talked to her about and 11-year-old Sajida speaks up. I remember she told us that her dream is that every mother is able to educate her daughter.

New Delhi: As the United States response to Indian concerns over David Coleman Headley has still left a few questions unanswered,New Delhi is likely to seek further clarifications from Washington by sending it a set of questions on the American Lashkar terrorists past in due course.
The US,in its one-page response to India about the finding of its review of the Lashkar terrorist case,on Monday admitted for the first time that some information relating to Headley was available to its government officials prior to the Mumbai attacks.It,however,stated that it was not sufficiently established that he (Headley) was engaged in plotting a terrorist attack in India.

The former military dictator Pervez Musharraf had frustrated him from the move by conjuring up a spectre of a revolt in Pakistan and the possibility of militants taking over the reins of power and the countrys nuclear arsenal,Bush said.
And then in 2008 he himself changed his mind and instead ordered deployment of drones,Bush said.

Manmohan Singh leaves for G20 summit in Seoul

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh left for Seoul for the 5th G20 Summit on Wednesday where he will meet his host, South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, apart from other leaders, including US President Barack Obama for the second time in less than a week.
During the three-day visit, the prime minister is not only expected to articulate India's stand on how to achieve global financial stability - the basic foundation of the grouping of the top rich and emerging economies, but also meet a host of leaders on the margins.
Apart from the meeting with Lee, the meetings of Manmohan Singh confirmed so far include those from Ethiopia - not a member but an invitee at G20 -- as also from Canada, Britain and Brazil, officials here said.

Advisor to the Sudanese president said on Saturday that Islamic Revolution does not belong to the Muslims alone; rather it belongs to all the oppressed across the world.
TEHRAN (Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Advisor to the Sudanese president said on Saturday that Islamic Revolution does not belong to the Muslims alone; rather it belongs to all the oppressed across the world.
Mostafa Esmail made the remarks in a meeting with Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki in Tehran.
Esmail told Mottaki that his talks with Iranian officials will help improve bilateral ties.
He praised the Islamic Republic of Iran for its independent foreign policy and said that his country attaches special significance to ties with Iran.

Six years after his death, the keepers of Arafat’s memory are gathering thousands of objects — photographs, pistols, the trademark sunglasses and military-style suits he favored — for display in a museum under construction at his former West Bank headquarters, where Arafat spent the last three years of his life encircled by Israeli forces.
The Associated Press was given exclusive access to part of the collection, including the last kaffiyeh Arafat wore before being helicoptered out of his Ramallah compound two weeks before his death on Nov. 11, 2004. There was a transistor radio and a Muslim holy book, both said to have been left at a house where Arafat stayed during a secret foray into the West Bank during the 1967 Middle East war.

Yamani’s service to Islam remembered

MAKKAH: Thousands of people attended the funeral of former Information Minister Muhammad Abdu Yamani, who was buried at Makkah’s Al-Maalla Cemetery after prayers in the Grand Mosque on Tuesday.
There was also intensive coverage of Yamani’s death in local Saudi newspapers. Yamani, who was information minister for eight years from 1976 to 1983, was a leading intellectual and writer of many Islamic books in Arabic and English.
Minister of Culture and Information Abdul Aziz Khoja said the news of Yamani’s death is sad, and that he has lost a friend and brother. He added that Yamani devoted his life to serving Islam.

Indonesian volcano death toll jumps to 191

JAKARTA: The death toll from the eruption of Indonesia's most active volcano jumped to 191 on Wednesday as more bodies were pulled from ruined villages, while ash continued to disrupt air traffic.
Mount Merapi, which means "Mountain of Fire", has been spewing ash and heat clouds since late October, incinerating entire settlements and forcing 340,000 people to flee to makeshift camps.
"The death toll from Merapi has reached 191," a disaster management official, who refused to give his name, said.
He said the sharp increase in the death toll from 151 was probably due to rescuers recovering more bodies in the central Java area where the volcano is located.

Lucknow : RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat today alleged there was a well planned conspiracy to tag the saffron outfit as a terrorist organisation and said it will come out clean.
"Dragging Sangh into an unnecessary controversy is not a new phenomena and this time too it is being made a scapegoat by those who are feeling unsure about keeping their place in Delhi," Bhagwat said while addressing a dharna here.
"But this time, Sangh has decided to tell the people what the reality is. We will fight it in court, publicise our view and will reach out to the people and tell them the reality," he said while referring to allegations against RSS functionary Indresh Kumar, who is being associated with the Ajmer blast.

Musharraf says India trying to set up anti-Pak Afghanistan

New York/Boston : Former Pakistan military dictator has charged India of trying to create an "anti-Pakistan Afghanistan," and said that US President Barack Obama's support for New Delhi's UNSC bid will not be viewed "favourably" in Islamabad.
Claiming that New Delhi is using its consulates in places like Jalalabad and Kandahar to foment trouble in his country, Pervez Musharraf hit back at criticism of Pakistan's handling of terror elements in the region, saying any responsibility of failure rests equally with the US and Afghan forces.
"If I'm allowed to be very, very frank, India's role in Afghanistan is to create an anti-Pakistan Afghanistan," Musharraf, who is attempting to script a comeback into Pakistani politics, said.

‘US has more to do to end Muslim mistrust’

JAKARTA: US President Barack Obama said Monday he is making progress toward ending the misunderstanding and mistrust between Muslim countries and the United States, but the effort is incomplete.
The president, at a news conference in the world's largest Muslim country, said his efforts to improve the relationship between Muslims and the West have been “earnest” and “sustained.” Still, he said the progress is “incomplete” and there is more work to do.
Though issues of terrorism and extremism often dominate the tensions between the Muslim world and the West, Obama said the relationship must expand beyond security issues.
“What we're trying to do is make sure that we are building bridges and expanding our interactions with Muslim countries,” Obama said during a joint news conference with Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Community group launches sacrificial meat project in three countries

JEDDAH: A Jeddah-based community group has plans to distribute sacrificial meat among 500,000 poor people in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh during the upcoming Eid Al-Adha.
Muhammad Abdul Mateen Osmani, director of Al-Islam Group, said his organization has mobilized worldwide support for the humanitarian project through its www.qurbaniforall.org website.
He said philanthropists in a number of countries have welcomed the initiative and are offering support.
“In several poverty-stricken parts of India, such as Bihar and Orissa, having a meal with meat is considered a luxury. Last year, we brought immense joy to Muslims in these areas by providing them this luxury during Eid Al-Adha,” Osmani said.

The 400th anniversary of which scientific invention was celebrated in 2009? Which country has two AK-47 guns on its national flag? These were some of the stimulating questions from the high tech “Brain Hunt World Quiz” competition organized by the Association of Malayalee Professionals in Saudi Arabia (AMPS) at SASREF beach camp.
Over 500 students from various schools in the Kingdom competed in this flagship annual event of AMPS, which has been held since 2004. In the preliminary elimination round, 164 teams, each consisting of three members, competed with one another to clinch a position in the final round.

New violence reported in Western Sahara

RABAT, Morocco: New clashes erupted in the Western Sahara on Tuesday between Moroccan security forces and local people seeking independence for the vast, resource-rich desert region, activists said.
People in the regional capital used rocks and sticks in street battles with Moroccan police conducting house-to-house searches, said Brahim Ahmed, an activist for the native Saharawi people.
“Every now and then you hear something, screams and everything,” he said.
Violence exploded Monday after Moroccan forces using tear-gas and high-pressure water cannons tore down a tent camp set up by some 20,000 Saharawi outside of the territory’s main city, Laayoune, to protest discrimination and deprivation at the hands of the Moroccan government, activists said. The camp dwellers fought the government forces and both sides reported casualties, although the figures were conflicting could not be independently confirmed.

BAGHDAD: Iraq’s Kurds are holding firm to their claim on the country’s presidency and the once-dominant Sunni minority is trying to push for checks on the powers of Shiite Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki as the country faces a looming parliamentary deadline to choose a new political leadership.
Iraq’s top political leaders are meeting for the second day in a row for face-to-face talks to find a way out of the country’s eight-month political deadlock since March 7 elections.
But producing a deal by Thursday’s scheduled parliamentary session is difficult. Standing in the way are issues such as how to apportion key government posts, what role to give the Sunni-backed Iraqiya coalition led by a senior Shiite politician and the deep distrust between political factions.

World’s largest pearl locked in court battle

DENVER, Colorado: A 14-pound (6-kilogram) pearl, believed to be the world’s largest, is locked in a Colorado bank vault until a legal battle in Denver resolves how to divide proceeds from its sale.
A federal court judge has agreed to revive the 29-year-old case over the Pearl of Allah.
But last week an attorney for one of the investors asked the court to stick to an earlier agreement.
The origin of the 9-inch (23-centimeter) diameter pearl, which resembles a human brain, is surrounded by legend and myth. The diver who found it in 1934 off the Philippines drowned when he reached into a huge clam to take it.

Court: Kenya cannot prosecute Somali pirates

MOMBASA, Kenya: A judge in Kenya’s second-highest court said Tuesday that the country does not have jurisdiction to try pirates if attacks have taken place outside Kenya’s waters, a decision that could harm US and international efforts to have pirates tried in East Africa.
Judge Mohammed Ibrahim made the decision when he terminated a case in which nine Somali men were charged with piracy. The judge ordered the men free because the alleged attack took place in the Gulf of Aden, off the Somali coast. He also directed the immigration department to repatriate the nine men back to Somalia.
“The local courts can only deal with offenses for criminal incidences that take place within the territorial jurisdiction of Kenya. The high seas are not and cannot be a place within Kenya or within the territorial waters of Kenya,” Ibrahim said in his ruling.

UN envoy: rehabilitate child pirates

UNITED NATIONS: Child pirates should not be tried as adults if an international tribunal is established to combat the growing piracy problem off Somali’s coast, the UN’s representative for children in armed conflict said Monday.
Radhika Coomaraswamy told reporters that a teen was among jailed pirates she met with during a visit to Somalia last week, and that her delegation heard about child soldiers escaping from the ranks of Islamic militias to become pirates.
“All of the old pirates now are rich, they are either living in Kenya or Somalia, and the people that they send out to actually do the dangerous stuff are young children and youth, between the ages of 15, 16 and 17,” said Coomaraswamy, of Sri Lanka.

Poll: Majority of Afghans back talks with Taliban

KABUL: Nearly all Afghans want their government to make peace with the Taliban despite their growing dislike for the insurgency, according to a survey funded in part by the US government.
The survey released Tuesday by the San Francisco-based Asia Foundation found that 83 percent of Afghan adults back negotiations with armed, anti-government groups, up from 71 percent last year. But it also said 55 percent of Afghans had no sympathy at all for the insurgency this year, up from 36 percent last year. Twenty-six percent of respondents said they had "a little sympathy" for the aims of the insurgency.

Madani intervenes from jail to save his party

Kerala Islamist Abdul Nasser Madani on Tuesday intervened to save his outfit, the PDP, from a possible split after the standoff between two camps in it reached a flashpoint. Madani’s act also proved that he was still the totalitarian supremo of his party despite the fact that he was in jail.
Through a letter he wrote to the senior leaders of the PDP from his cell in the Parappana Agrahara prison, Bangalore, Madani, chairman of the PDP, removed two of them including one of his close relatives and appointed new men in their positions.
The PDP was facing a crisis ever since a faction led by Poonthura Siraj, working chairman and husband of Madani’s sister-in-law, declared its intention to forge an alliance with the Muslim League, an arch rival so far, in the wake of the League’s stunning victory in the recent local bodies elections.

Israel dismisses global criticism over new settlements

Jerusalem : Israel has dismissed worldwide criticisms over its plan to build 1,300 new homes in east Jerusalem, emphasising that the Holy city is its capital and not a settlement and that the Jewish state is doing nothing to harm the peace process with the Palestinians.
"Jerusalem isn't a settlement, Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. Israel has never put any sort of limits on construction in Jerusalem, where some 800,000 people reside, and didn't do so during the 10 month settlement freeze in the West Bank either," a statement from the Prime Minister's Office said.

India releases 64 Pak prisoners

Lahore : Sixty-four Pakistani nationals, including 56 fishermen, crossed the Wagah land border on Tuesday after being released from Indian jails.
India's Border Security Force handed over the freed prisoners to the Pakistan Rangers at Wagah.
The freed persons will be sent home after the completion of an investigation and clearance by authorities, officials said.
The Pakistanis were imprisoned in India after being convicted on charges like crossing the border, tampering with visas and over-stay.
Most of them hail from Sindh province.
Volunteers of the NGO Edhi Foundation provided food and other items to the released persons.

Mumbai attacks: Now, US spy chief says India lying

Washington : Contrary to what Indian govt says, the US indicated India was warned well on time about Mumbai attacks and could have prevented Kasab and co from going on a killing spree in the middle of the metropolis.
The blame ball is being lobbed to-and-fro by Indian and the US authorities, looking for someone to blame for the attacks on Mumbai in which hundreds of innocent people were killed.

Bush faults Pakistan on extremism

WASHINGTON: Former US president George W. Bush has written in a new memoir that he became convinced Pakistan would not act against extremist militants and all but admitted he ordered drone strikes on its soil.
In his book “Decision Points” published Tuesday, Bush said he had “complex” relations with Pakistan and its former military leader Pervez Musharraf, who pledged to support the United States after the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Bush acknowledged that Pakistan “paid a high price for taking on extremists” and said its forces were successful for several years in targeting al Qaeda militants crossing the porous border with Afghanistan.
But Bush said: “Over time, it became clear that Musharraf either would not or could not fulfill all of his promises.”

Both Pakistan and India have role in Afghanistan: US

WASHINGTON: The United States believes that both India and Pakistan can play an important and constructive role in Afghanistan, the White House and the State Department say.
Earlier, US officials had assured Pakistan that while they recognise India’s reconstruction efforts and economic support to the Afghan government, Washington also appreciates Islamabad’s concern about involving India in military matters.
This echoed in a statement the White House issued on Monday afternoon on talks in New Delhi between US President Barack Obama and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The two leaders agreed to collaborate closely to as-sist the people of Afghanistan by identifying opportunities to leverage their relative strengths, experience and resources, the statement said.
