Islam is a great religion but there is a need to isolate those who have distorted its vision, US President Barack Obama told a gathering of college students, in Mumbai on Sunday. "Well, the phrase jehad has a lot of meanings within Islam. It is subject to lot of different interpretations. But
I will say that first Islam is one of the world's great religions and over a billion people practice Islam," Obama said at the packed forecourt of St. Xavier's College here.
"The overwhelming majority want peace, justice, fairness and tolerance. All of us recognise that this great religion, in the hands of a few extremists, has been distorted. One of the challenges we face is how to isolate those who have distorted its vision," Obama said when a student asked for his views on jehad.
"The religion teaches peace, justice, fairness and tolerance. All of us recognise that this great religion cannot justify violence," he added.
"We affirm that Hindu or Muslim or Christian or Jew or any other religion; we all need to treat each other with respect and dignity that Gandhi referred to. It's a major challenge not only in India but also around the world," said Obama, who looked at ease while interacting with the students gathered from six Mumbai colleges.

Man divorces wife after poll debacle in UP

AN ASPIRING politician in Allahabad district of Uttar Pradesh was so rattled by his defeat in the recent panchayat elections that he divorced his wife.
Ashiq Baba alias Mohammad Bablu, a poor father of seven, spent all his savings to contest the polls so that he could earn money and respect for his family. When he lost, he decided to get rid of the family.
A resident of Purushottampur village in Utraon town, Ashiq blamed his wife Guddi for his failed mission, saying residents of her village Ara didn’t vote for him.
He contested from ward no- 4 of Saidabad block in the district, but lost by 70 votes.
The result was declared only three days ago, but Ashiq “ concluded after a thorough analysis of the result” that he lost because the people of Ara didn’t support him.
Guddi said: “ My husband came home drunk along with four friends on Wednesday evening and uttered talaq thrice in their presence. I have seven children from him. Who will feed them now?” But Ashiq sought to justify his action: “ There were 100 votes in her village which I didn't get. I spent all my savings in this election. She should have understood this and appealed to her villagers to support me. It was also the duty of the people of Ara to vote for me because I was their son- in- law. But they rejected me.
“ This happened because Guddi didn’t want me to contest.
She fought with me just a fortnight before the elections, saying we were too poor to afford spending our savings on campaigning. My point was that I could earn respect by becoming a member of the village panchayat.
Once I would be a member, there would be no shortage of money.” Ashiq didn’t mind admitting that he wanted to become a panchayat member because “ there was enough scope to earn”. “ Who is in politics to do social work? I am poor and trying to earn some respect and money. I expected my wife to support me. But her non- cooperation resulted in my defeat. Now I don’t have a single penny to run a family.
So, I decided to get rid of her,” he said.
Aghast at Ashiq’s action, Guddi’s brother Imtiyaz said: “ If Islam allowed such kind of talaq s, then imagine the kind of anarchy which would prevail in the community.
“ It is also not true that the people of Ara didn’t support him. His election symbol was pen and ink- pot. At least 90 villagers voted for this symbol. He lost since people of his own village Purushottampur didn’t support him because of his rogue attitude.” The clerics are divided over whether such talaq is valid.
Mohammad Nasim, a local cleric, said: “ Saying talaq thrice means a confirmed divorce in Islam. We cannot do anything now. It would be unIslamic for Guddi to stay with Ashiq under the same roof.” But Mohammad Abdullah, another local cleric, rejected the divorce. “ There is not a single reasonable organisation which supports such kind of talaq . Whatever Ashiq said was motivated. It proves that he is a selfish man who wants to leave his wife with some ulterior motive.
He must pay compensation to Guddi and also ensure proper livelihood for his seven children,” the cleric said.

Darra blast toll reaches 95

PESHAWAR: Death toll from the suicide attack on a mosque in Darra Adam Khel reached 95, as some injured people termed the attack an outcome of a rivalry between two terrorist groups. Barkatullah, 25, a student at a religious seminary in Akhurwall area, who had been injured in the attack, told Daily Times two terrorist groups – the Tariq Afridi group, which is a part of the TTP and loyal to Hakimullah Mehsud, and the Momin group – had developed serious differences. He said supporters of the Momin group had helped security forces eliminate Darra Adam Khel’s Taliban leader Tariq Afridi’s network from the Akhurwall area. Another injured, Mir Zaman Khan, said he had heard that the top commander of the Momin group, identified as Shaukat Afridi, had also been killed in the blast. Meanwhile, the condition of several injured is said to be stable. Muhammad Younas, a dispenser by profession who was injured in the blast, said that as the imam of the mosque started the main sermon before the Friday prayers, the teenage bomber blew hismelf up in the lawn of the mosque.

LONDON/ISLAMABAD: Hundreds of students, including foreigners are being trained in militant camps in PoK to wage 'jihad' against India, but Pakistan on Saturday denied the report by the BBC as "baseless". After a lull, several militant outfits have now again raised their heads and increased their activities in and around Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), to wage 'jihad' against India, BBC Urdu Service has reported.
A 25-year-old engineering student from Lahore, fresh from a training stint in one of the camps told BBC from POK that "a large number of youths from Pakistani universities and abroad are undergoing training in PoK under supervision of a militant group to wage jihad against India."
"Around 20% youths in the camps are from Kashmir," claimed the Kashmiri student.

After months,Srinagar was enjoying a holiday.The bazaars were bustling;the parks were full;whole families spreading picnic rugs to eat a lazy lunch;their children ran around laughing and playing.A gentle breeze rustled the orange and yellow chinar trees.The poplars in Hazratbal waved gently.
Syed Ali Shah Geelani appeared to have give Kashmiris a Diwali present they could barely have imagined or hoped for... a day without fear.
But,as the sun went down and millions of diyas lit up all over India,Srinagar started to shut down too.Just how much became apparent by dark,as we drove around.There was no aarti at the famous Ganpatyar temple in the former Pandit locality of Habba Kadal.

Yemen court orders to find Awlaki dead or alive

SANA: A Yemeni judge ordered police Saturday to find a radical US-born cleric “dead or alive” after the al Qaeda-linked preacher failed to appear at his trial for his role in the killing of foreigners. Judge Mohsen Allwan ordered al-Awlaki to be ‘arrested by force, dead or alive’ after he failed to appear for the start of his trial in Yemen on Tuesday. He was charged last week as a co-defendant in a surprise announcement as part of the trial of another man, Hisham Assem, who has been accused of killing a Frenchman in an Oct 6 attack at an oil firm compound. Al-Awlaki’s name and that of a cousin, Othman al-Awlaki, were added as defendants in absentia. According to the prosecution, Othman al-Awlaki had put Assem indirectly in e-mail contact with Anwar al-Awlaki. Yemen is under heavy US pressure to crack down on the country’s al Qaeda offshoot AQAP.

Egypt to protect Christians from Al-Qaeda

CAIRO: Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak assured the country's Coptic Christians the government will protect them in the face of Al-Qaeda threats.
Al-Qaeda's front group in Iraq has threatened to attack Christians unless Egypt's Coptic Orthodox Church releases women the terror group claims the church is holding captive for converting to Islam.
Egypt's official MENA news agency says Mubarak spoke with Coptic leader Pope Shenouda III by telephone Saturday and pledged to protect the country's 8-million strong Coptic community.
Last week, Al-Qaeda militants held more than 100 people hostage in a Baghdad church, prompting a siege that left 58 people dead. Since then, the group has vowed to attack Christians wherever they can be reached.

Ten militants killed in Orakzai air strikes

KALAYA: Ten militants were killed and five others injured when helicopter gunships pounded their hideouts in various areas of Lower Orakzai tribal region on Saturday.
Official sources said that military helicopters targeted militant positions in Andar Mella, Malokhel and Saidkhel villages after nine people, security personnel among them, were kidnapped.
Sources said that those kidnapped were going from Bezotkhel to Kohat on Friday when militants stopped their vehicles in Saidkhel area and forcibly took them away.
Three hideous were destroyed in the shelling.
The political administration called a meeting of the elders of Bezotkhel, Perozkhel and Istrikhel tribes and asked them to take action against militants who were attacking security forces’ convoys and government installations in the area.
The elders were told to inform the security forces about the movement of militants in their areas.

27 injured in Iraq blast

BAGHDAD: An Iraqi police officer says three car bombs have exploded in the northern city of Kirkuk, wounding 27 civilians.
Brig. Gen. Sarhad Qadir said Saturday morning that the parked cars exploded over a 30-minute period in three adjacent Kurdish areas.
Qadir said it was not known whether there was a specific target for the blasts.
Kirkuk is 290 km north of Baghdad and is home to a mix of Arabs, Kurds and Turkomen, who all have competing claims to the oil-rich area.
The Kurds are seeking to incorporate Kirkuk into their autonomous region in Iraq's north. Arabs and Turkomen oppose that effort.

Muslim boy clings on to Hindu ‘ dad’

AKBAR, 13, is living in trepidation this festive season. For, he would have to undergo a DNA test on Monday that might force him to part ways with his adopted father with whom he has been living for the past seven years.
Akbar was six when he went missing from Allahabad. He was found crying in a park in Lucknow by Aiku Lal, who took him home. Aiku treated Akbar as his own son and despite himself being a Hindu, never forced the boy to change his name or his religion.
The duo was living a happy life till a Muslim couple claimed Akbar to be their lost son. Though the child wants to live with his adopted father, the Supreme Court has directed that Akbar undergo a DNA test to determine his parentage.

Mumbai a symbol of incredible energy, optimism, says Obama

MUMBAI: US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle arrived in Mumbai Saturday afternoon abroad Air Force One plane, which landed at the Shivaji Chattrapti International Airport.
Obama and his wife were received by Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan who presented him a gift and a bouquet to Michalle. Obama after brief interaction with dignitaries at the airport, left in a US Navy helicopter to Taj Mahal Palace hotel, to pay tributes to the martyrs of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack.
Soon after his arrival at Taj, Obama clarified that his decision to stay at the Taj was deliberate. He paid tributes to the hotel staff killed in the terrorists attacks and also to those innocent people and policemen killed in the attack.

Army can step in even after AFSPA withdrawal: Omar Abdullah

NEW DELHI: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah feels the Armed Forces Special Powers Act can be withdrawn from some areas in the state with a rider that the army could step in again if the situation so warranted.
He will soon chair a high-level meeting to review the possible withdrawal of Disturbed Areas Act, which may subsequently lead to removal of AFSPA.
"I think the time has come where we can start to objectively look at areas from where the AFSPA can be removed with the understanding that if there is a situation requiring the Army to intervene, we can make a temporary sort of return to that," Omar said.
Seeking to reduce the footprint of security personnel in the Valley, Omar said the state government has started moving back the forces and the recent dismantling of 16 bunkers in Srinagar was a first step.
"We hope to continue until we reach a level where the visible presence is greatly reduced," he said.

LONDON: Months after he was released from Guantanamo Bay, Abdul Rahman was back in the company of terrorist leaders along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. But he was a double agent, providing Taleban and Al-Qaeda secrets to Pakistani intelligence, which then shared the tips with Western counterparts.
The ruse cost him his life, according to a former Pakistani military intelligence official, Mahmood Shah. The Taleban began to suspect him, and after multiple interrogations executed him.
The case of Rahman, which Shah recounted, falls in line with a key aspect of the fight against terror — Western intelligence agencies, with help from Islamic allies, are placing moles and informants inside Al-Qaeda and the Taleban. The program seems to be bearing fruit, even as many infiltrators like Rahman are discovered and killed.

Israeli police flatten mosque, say built illegally

Rahat (Israel) : Israeli police say they demolished an illegally built mosque in the southern Bedouin city of Rahat, touching off rock-throwing protests by residents.
Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the two-story mosque was knocked down on Sunday in keeping with a court ruling.
Mosque activist Yousef Abu-Jama said residents built the structure illegally because Israeli authorities would take too long to issue approval.
Authorities rarely target mosques for demolition. This particular mosque was financed by a group that is frequently in conflict with authorities.
Critics note that Israeli authorities have not yet acted on a court ruling to evacuate Jewish settlers from a building in disputed east Jerusalem that was illegally expanded.

It's easier to say what the "mosque at Ground Zero" is not, than what it is. It's not a mosque, and it's not at Ground Zero – only nearby. It's not a "clubhouse for terrorists", as some objectors have called it, nor a work of "triumphalist stealth jihad". It does not "loom" over the "hallowed ground" of the 9/11 attacks, which cannot be seen from its site.
As to what it is, the explanation is not at first very enlightening. Park51, to use the project's proper name, is "a friendly and accessible platform" that "enriches lower Manhattan in body and spirit, with ecologically conscious design and operation". However, its architect, Michel Abboud, makes things clearer: it is a Muslim version of the YMCA, or the many Jewish community centres in New York. That is, it will have a swimming pool, basketball court, childcare and exhibition facilities, a library, auditorium, restaurant and catering school. As with the Christian and Jewish versions, you won't have to be a believer to use these facilities.

Saudis defy no-women-cashiers fatwa

Jeddah: Women cashiers were at work in several Jeddah supermarkets on Saturday as their employers ignored a fatwa by the countrys highest religious authority forbidding female checkout clerks.
The popular Marhaba chain kept the women on the job despite the six-day-old ruling signed by grand mufti Sheikh al-Sheikh and six other senior religious scholars which contradicted a key government policy to create jobs for women.
A Marhaba official said the women would keep working until the labour ministry ordered them to stop the practice,only begun in the past three months after the ministry said it was permitted.

Islamabad : Pakistan has said that the US, which enjoys good relations with India, has the responsibility to play an "effective role" to find an amicable solution to the lingering Kashmir issue.
Under the prevailing circumstances when the US enjoys good relations with India, it is the responsibility of the American leadership to play an "effective role for an amicable solution of the longstanding issue of Kashmir", said Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit during a telephonic interview with state-run PTV.
Obama is aware that the normalisation of Pakistan -- India relations is a prerequisite for peace and progress in the region and he also knows that the Kashmir issue is the "main hurdle" in this regard, he said.

German Protestant bishop warns of religious fundamentalism

Hanover - A senior Protestant bishop in Germany warned on Saturday that fundamentalism was on the rise globally, in Christianity as well as Islam.
'This fundamentalism, in which one's own (beliefs) are considered an absolute for everybody, carries a potential for violence that is not limited to Islam,' said Martin Schindehuette, the German Evangelical Church (EKD) authority on foreign affairs.
'Religions exist to contribute to peace,' Schindehuettte added, in an interview with German Press Agency dpa.
The bishop referred to the persecution of Christians in Iraq and Indonesia, where he said a previously moderate form of Islam was being influenced by Arabic countries.

Hijabi Monologues Give Voice to Muslim American Women

In an effort to inform the Stanford community about the hijab, the headscarf Muslim women use to cover their hair, students will perform a rendition of "Hijabi Monologues" tonight at 7 p.m. in Cubberley Auditorium on campus.
After surveying students about "What does Stanford know about Islam?" the Muslim Student Awareness Network found that a common topic of curiosity was the hijab. In response, they decided to join the Stanford Theater Activist Mobilization Project (STAMP) in producing "Hijabi Monologues," a collection of stories based on the real lives of Muslim American women who wear the hijab.
Author of the monologues Sahar Ullah will attend the performance and participate in a panel discussion to follow.

Muslims teach others about their faith

HAGERSTOWN — Muslims from across the Tri-State area and beyond held an interfaith conference at the Grand Venice Hotel in Hagerstown Saturday night to educate others about the religion.
Event organizer Ansa Pasha said the annual event is hosted by the Islamic Society of Western Maryland to let people know that local Muslims are dedicated to being a positive influence in the community.
“There’s a lot of misunderstanding after 9/11,” Pasha said. “Not all Muslims are the same people. We are against all kinds of violence. This is a way to clear things up.”
About 125 people attended the event, which began at 5:30 p.m. and was to last for three hours. The hosts served their guests a meal that included bread, chicken curry and rice.
Pasha said the conference was advertised in churches and synagogues across the Tri-State area.

MUMBAI, India – President Obama defended his administration’s stance toward Pakistan during a visit to a college Sunday, telling students that the United States is committed to working “with the Pakistani government in order to eradicate this extremism that we consider a cancer within the country.”
The president’s remarks came in response to a question about why the United States has not labeled Pakistan “ a terrorist state.” It was one of a series of tough questions Mr. Obama faced from students at St. Xavier’s College, a 140-year-old Jesuit institution in Mumbai.

Mumbai: Its an irony that not a single cop involved in the 26/11 gunbattle against Pakistani terrorists at the Taj Mahal hotel got to meet the US President Obama who checked in there on Saturday.While those who played key roles in tackling terror were not invited,the others who got personal invitations for an event to commemorate the attack were denied permission to meet Obama by their bosses.
Police inspector Deepak Dhole,who was in the first batch of policemen to reach Taj on the night of November 26,2008,was injured in a grenade attack by the four terrorists.He was admitted to Bombay Hospital for a month.But instead of getting a chance to meet Obama,he was deployed for crowd control like all other 43,000 police personnel deputed to protect Obama.

Mumbai: The second event on Barack Obamas Taj itinerary was a meeting with 12 survivors of the 26/11 attacks.One of them was American Kia Scherr who lost her husband Alan and daughter Naomi.They had come to Mumbai for a meditation retreat. It was an emotional experience, said Scherr,who has been in Mumbai since late September preparing for an event to commemorate the attacks second anniversary.
Former general manager of the Taj in Mumbai,Karambir Kang,who lost his wife and two kids in the attacks,was also present at the meeting at the Chambers. It was a private meeting with the President, Kang told TOI.

New Delhi: US president Barack Obama did not mention Pakistan while expressing solidarity with the victims of 26/11 in Mumbai on Saturday.While it may have been an opportunity to beat the US on its treatment of Pakistan,its not such a bad thing.
If there is one thing that India wants,its to dehyphenate itself from Pakistan in the minds of the international community.To that extent,there is no doubt in the minds of policymakers here that for Obama to do the Pakistan routine in Mumbai would have only served to strengthen the hyphenation.The last thing India wants is to have the US viewing it through the Pakistan lens,so it was probably a good thing that Obama desisted.

Progress by Pakistan in tackling terror not quick as we like: Obama

MUMBAI: US President Barack Obama on Sunday said the progress by Pakistan in fighting terrorism is not quick as "we would like" and asserted that they were working with Islamabad to eradicate extremism which is a "cancer".
Noting that there are going to be some elements in Pakistan that are affiliated with Taliban, al-Qaida and LeT, he said they are "irreconcilable" and there needs to be a military response to those who perpetrate violence like they did in Mumbai and New York in a "significant, ongoing" way.
Obama also observed that it would surprise Indians when he says this that it is in India's interest that Pakistan remains "peaceful, stable and prosperous" and that the US will work with Islamabad to reject extremism which is a "cancer" which threatens to engulf it.

Pak court issues notice to Musharraf in 'treason' case

LAHORE: A Pakistani court has issued notice to Pervez Musharraf on a petition seeking his presence in court linked to a case in which the former military dictator has been accused of committing high treason by imposing emergency in 2007.
A single-judge bench of the Lahore high court issued the notice on Friday after a petitioner moved the application seeking directions to ensure the former President's presence in court for the hearing of a case in which Musharraf has been accused of committing high treason by imposing emergency in 2007.
The petitioner submitted Musharraf's postal address in London and requested the court to direct authorities to approach Interpol to obtain a Red Corner Notice against him.
Musharraf has been living in self-exile in Britain since he left Pakistan in April last year.

Kenyan police officer kills 10 in shooting rampage

NAIROBI: A police officer in a jealous rage shot dead 10 people in a rampage through two bars in central Kenya early Sunday before giving himself up for arrest, police said.
The officer shot and killed two of his police colleagues in a bar in the central town of Siakago, before running amok in another bar nearby, killing eight civilians, police chief John Chelimo said.
Chelimo said the man was on guard duty outside the local police headquarters around 1 am when he erupted into a jealous rage after being told his girlfriend was drinking with his colleagues in a nearby bar.

Interpol issues alert over Yemen parcel bombs

LYON: The global police agency Interpol issued an alert Saturday to help forces in its member states spot disguised bombs of the kind al-Qaida sent last week from Yemen using airmail parcel couriers.
The so-called "Orange Notice", which will also be made public, contains photographs and technical details of the latest bombs, which were discovered and made safe at airports in Dubai and Britain after an intelligence warning.
al-Qaida's Yemen-based branch, al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), has claimed responsibility for sending the sophisticated devices, in which the explosive PETN was packed into printer cartridges and attached to timers.
"The information contained in this Orange Notice will allow police services and other law enforcement agencies to take all appropriate measures to identify potentially lethal devices," Interpol Secretary General Ronald Noble said.

US cannot impose itself on Indo-Pak dialogue: Obama

MUMBAI: President Barack Obama today made it clear that the United States "cannot impose" itself on Indo-Pak relations and called for a "military response" in a "significant ongoing way" against those who perpetrated terror attacks in Mumbai and New York.
Obama avoided any reference to Kashmir but, endorsing India's stand, said that less contentious issues should be taken up first in an Indo-Pak dialogue process.
India has been persistently suggesting to Pakistan that less contentious issues could be taken up for bilateral talks before the two countries move on to discussing thorny issues like Kashmir.
Interacting with students of St Xaviers College here in a typical US town-hall style meeting for nearly an hour, Obama expressed hope that over time, trust develops between India and Pakistan and dialogue begins perhaps on "less controversial issues building upto more controversial issues".

Court dismisses appeal of Telgi's aides against sentence

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court has dismissed three separate appeals of two aides of fake stamp paper scam kingpin Abdul Karim Telgi against the sentence, including the fine imposed on them after they pleaded guilty of involvement in running the racket.
Additional Sessions Judge Madhu Jain did not find any merit in the plea of convicts Laxman Maruti Tirveer alias Laxman Patil and Vijay D Patil and said that a similar appeal of their co-accused was dismissed and that decision was upheld by the high court.
Triveer was sentenced to five years in jail with a fine of Rs five lakh in one case and five years term with Rs four lakh fine in another case after he admitted to the charges in June last year with regard to possession of fake stamp papers.

NEW DELHI: US president Barack Obama did not mention Pakistan while expressing solidarity with the
victims of 26/11 in Mumbai on Saturday. While it may have been an opportunity to beat the US on its treatment of Pakistan, it's not such a bad thing.
If there is one thing that India wants, it's to "dehyphenate" itself from Pakistan in the minds of the international community. To that extent, there is no doubt in the minds of policymakers here that for Obama to do the Pakistan routine in Mumbai would have only served to strengthen the 'hyphenation'. The last thing India wants is to have the US viewing it through the Pakistan lens, so it was probably a good thing that Obama desisted.

Mail bombs: UAE's Emirates, Etihad airlines halt Yemen cargo

Dubai : Airlines in the United Arab Emirates say they have stopped carrying cargo from Yemen as a precaution following the discovery of two mail bombs shipped as air freight.
The Middle East's biggest airline Emirates, which operates out of Dubai, and Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways each confirmed the cargo embargoes in response to questions on Sunday. Discount carrier Air Arabia, based in the emirate of Sharjah, also said it had stopped accepting freight originating in Yemen.
It is unclear when exactly the bans were implemented, but they have been in place since at least last week, spokesmen for two of the carriers said.

Iran suggests new nuclear talks be held in Turkey

Tehran : Iran is proposing that a new round of talks on its nuclear program with the United States and other world powers be held in Turkey, though no date has been announced.
Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki says Iran has informed its "friends in Turkey" that it is willing to hold the talks there.
Mottaki told a news conference on Sunday that Iran is "hopeful a time and agenda will be agreed upon soon."
Tehran has said it would be ready to hold talks with the six powers some time after Nov. 10. The six nations are the US, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany.
They suspect Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapons capability under the cover of a civil energy program. Iran denies that.
Negotiations foundered a year ago.

Gilani tells India to appreciate Pak's anti-terror efforts

Islamabad : Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has asked India to appreciate Pakistan's efforts in curbing terrorism and said the two countries should de-link their peace process from incidents of terror to make dialogue a "sustainable proposition".
Gilani, who was speaking at a national conference of the Pakistan chapter of the South Asia Free Media Association here last evening, said Pakistan and India should resolve all outstanding disputes through peaceful means.
"I call upon India to appreciate our efforts in curbing terrorism that poses the biggest internal threat to our national interests, ethos and values.
"Pakistan and India should resolve their disputes, especially on Kashmir, through peaceful means and productive dialogue," he said.

Survivors of 26/ 11 find meeting with Obama ‘ warm & intimate’

KIA SCHERR was among the 12 survivors of the 26/ 11 carnage who got an opportunity to meet US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle at the Taj Hotel on Saturday.
The meeting brought back the most painful memories of her life, but the 54- year- old American, who lost her husband Alan ( 58) and daughter Naomi ( 13) in the terror attack, is nevertheless happy that she met her President. “ It was a very warm, intimate and heartfelt meeting,” she recalls.
Kia says the first couple went around the room, shaking hands and speaking with everyone present.
Most of the survivors were staff of the Taj and Oberoi hotels, two of the major terror targets on that November night.

Musharraf disappointed Obama not visiting Pakistan

WASHINGTON: Pakistan’s former president Pervez Musharraf voiced disappointment on Friday that US President Barack Obama was not stopping in Pakistan on the sidelines of his visit to India.
“I would take it as a disappointment, yes, indeed,” Musharraf told a private TV channel.
Musharraf also criticised Obama for not speaking about Kashmir, the Himalayan region disputed between Pakistan and India, saying: “It doesn’t resonate well with the people of Pakistan.”
“They take it that the US or the president of the US is not that concerned about Pakistan’s own sensitivities and interests,” he said.

Afghanistan’s election for the lower house of parliament, or wolesi jirga, got off to a bad start. Originally scheduled for May, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) postponed the ballot until September after international donors, threatening to withhold funding, demanded electoral reforms be introduced to avoid a repeat of last year’s fraud-marred presidential vote. The election went ahead on Sept. 18 and, despite threats from the Taliban, passed off without any major attacks, although at least 17 people were killed on the day. Poor security in many parts of the country also meant more than 1,500 polling centres remained closed out of around 6,800 slated to open.

RIYADH: Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal expressed Saudi Arabia’s fears on Saturday that Sudan's upcoming referendum on the south's independence could reignite violence in the country rather than bring peace.
Addressing a joint press conference with his Italian counterpart Franco Frattini, Prince Saud said the original reason for the January referendum was to bring peace between the north and south in the wake of a two-decade-old civil war.
"The solution needed is to stop the fighting between the north and the south … If the referendum leads to a renewal of fighting, that is what we fear," he said, stressing that the referendum, scheduled for Jan. 9, must be fair and free.

Pakistan links seen in raid on Afghan UN compound

KABUL: Afghan security forces have detained three insurgents they blame for an attack on a UN compound last month and believe they have links to Afghan Taleban leaders based in Pakistan, security officials said on Saturday.
Four Taleban suicide bombers, dressed as police and women, attacked the main United Nations compound in Herat city, a commercial hub in Afghanistan’s west, on Oct. 23. All four were killed and there were no casualties among UN staff.
While the attack was repelled successfully, it caused concern for Afghan and NATO-led forces because Herat, once largely stable, is seen as an early candidate for the transfer of security responsibility from foreign forces to Afghans.
