Al-Qaeda inspired woman jailed for life

LONDON: A young woman student of Bangladeshi origin, alleged to have been radicalised by online sermons of Al-Qaeda preacher Anwar al-Awlaki, was on Wednesday sentenced to life for trying to kill a Labour MP as “punishment” for supporting the Iraq invasion.
Roshonara Choudhry (21), who refused to appear in court reportedly on grounds that she did not accept the jurisdiction of a British court, stabbed Stephen Timms — a Minister at the time — twice with a knife at his East London constituency office in May this year.
Mr. Timms, who was hospitalised with what were described as life-threatening multiple wounds, said the burqa-clad woman looked “friendly” and was “smiling” before she pulled out a knife and started to stab him.
Choudhry's supporters protested against the sentence and raised slogans against the judge.
Police said she picked up Mr. Simms from a list of MPs who had voted in favour of the invasion. “I wanted to kill him…I was going to take revenge for the people of Iraq,” she reportedly told the police.
“She admitted without hesitation that her intention was to end her victim's life, but has succeeded only in ruining her own,” said a senior police officer.
British-born Choudhry, whose father is a tailor, was said to have been an outstanding student with no previous history of extremism.
Passing the sentence, Mr. Justice Cooke told her: “You said you wanted to be a martyr. You intended to kill in a political cause and to strike at those in government by doing so. You did so as a matter of deliberate decision making, however skewed your reasons, from listening to those Muslims who incite such action on the Internet.”

Ajmer Dargah blast bomb-maker held

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Anti-Terror Squad has arrested the bomb-maker in the Ajmer Dargah blast case. He happens to be a main accused in the Vadodara Best Bakery carnage also.
Harshad Bhai Solanki alias Munna alias Raj, belonging to the Hanuman Tekri Katchi Basti of Vadodara, was nabbed in Gujarat and brought here and arrested on Monday. A court here remanded him to police custody till November 9.
Harshad Bhai was an accomplice of Sunil Joshi, main accused in the October 2007 Ajmer blast case and remained with him till the latter was murdered at Dewas in Madhya Pradesh on December 29, 2007.
Additional Director-General of Police Kapil Garg, who is also in-charge of the ATS, said Harshad played an active role in gathering bomb-making material, assembling them and packaging the bombs to Ajmer.
Best Bakery incident
Mr. Garg said the accused confessed to his involvement in the Best Bakery incident in which 14 persons were killed in arson by a mob of 500 persons on March 1, 2002. He was one of the 21 accused named in the FIR filed by Zahira Sheik, a kin of the victims, at the Pani Gate Police Station in Vadodara a day later.
Harshad was acquitted by a fast track court in Gujarat in June 2003 after 16 months of trial along with the other accused, as 37 of the 73 witnesses turned hostile. The Gujarat High Court turned down a plea for appeal.
The accused were again put to trial after the National Human Rights Commission took up the case on the basis of the eyewitness accounts from Zahira Sheik and a public interest litigation petition by social activist Teesta Setelwad in the Supreme Court.
Absconder
In April 2004, the Supreme Court ordered that the case be tried in Maharashtra. “When 17 of the 21 accused in the Best Bakery case could be re-arrested, Harshad managed to escape. He was among the four who were absconding,” Mr. Garg said.
While sentencing nine of the 17 accused to life term, the Maharashtra court issued arrest warrants against the four absconding. It acquitted eight others.
Harshad was working in a team engaged in installation of mobile phone towers. His expertise was in fixing electrical components. It was during the period in hiding that he came across Sunil Joshi and conspired with him to carry out the Dargah blast, Mr. Garg said.

Ahmadis barred from burying their dead in Muslim graveyards

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan police have forced a family of the Ahmadi sect in Punjab's Sargodha district to exhume the body of a relative who was buried in a Muslim graveyard. Police officials said they took this unusual step in view of the 'threat to peace' posed by anti-Ahmadi Muslim groups in the area.
Pakistan's constitution bars Ahmadis from identifying themselves as Muslims. Ahmadis, however, consider themselves as equal followers of the faith.
The BBC reported that Shehzad Waraich, a farmer in the Bhalwal area of Sargodha, died on October 30 and was buried in a shared graveyard designated by the government. The next day police approached Waraich's family to remove the body from the Muslim graveyard. The police further said the family was asked to remove the body as the burial was illegal.
The family complied with the request and exhumed the body. They have now buried it in a different graveyard, reserved for the Ahmadis, several miles away from the village."
The Ahmadi spokesman, Salimuddin, said it was the 30th incident since 1984 in which an Ahmadi body has been forcefully exhumed by the administration to satisfy the opponents of the community.
"The administration always sides with our opponents, and has a convenient argument that they are trying to maintain peace," he said.

Two gangraped nurses expelled from hostel in Pakistan

PESHAWAR: A hospital probe committee has decided to expel from the hostel two trainee nurses who were gang-raped in this Pakistani city. The reason: The victims violated the rules.
The three-member committee, which was set up to investigate the gangrape of the two trainee nurses of the Khyber Teaching Hospital here, decided to expel the girls from the hostel for violation of rules, the News International reported Thursday.
Sources said that the young women were kidnapped by four people from Sadar Bazaar where they had gone for shopping. The victims were gangraped Sunday.
The assailants then dumped the women on the Ring Road in semi-conscious condition.
The victims' condition was critical due to profuse bleeding.
The trainee nurses told the hospital committee that Sunday being a public holiday they had gone to Sadar Bazaar for shopping and on their way back to the hospital hostel they asked the taxi driver to stop so that they could buy juice, a source said.
The women said they fell unconscious after drinking the juice and when they regained consciousness, they found themselves in a room where they were gangraped.

Four killed in drone strike in North Waziristan

MIRAMSHAH: A US drone attack targeted fighters in Pakistan’s northwestern tribal belt on Wednesday, killing four militants and blowing their vehicle into a fireball, security officials said.
Two missiles slammed into the vehicle in a suburb of Miramnshah, the main town in the North Waziristan district, considered Pakistan’s premier fortress of militants and the focus of a dramatic increase in US drone strikes.
Pakistani officials said the four militants were inside the vehicle, which was destroyed, and that a nearby house in the Qutub Khel suburb was damaged.

Rs 74 million spent on renovation of Gilani's residence

ISLAMABAD: The renovation of Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani's palatial official residence and his secretariat in the past 30 months have cost taxpayers Rs 74 million, according to documents tabled in parliament.
Housing and works minister Rehmatullah Kakar informed the National Assembly or lower house of parliament on Wednesday that the renovation of the Prime Minister's House had cost more than double the renovation of Gilani's Secretariat.
Kakar told the House in written replies that in the last 30 months, Rs 50.3 million was spent on the renovation of the Prime Minister's House.

Pak court to decide on temple ownership

A Pakistani court has directed officials to produce records related to a temple in this northwestern city whose ownership has been claimed by a Hindu woman.
A two-judge bench of the Peshawar High Court issued notices to the Peshawar District Revenue Officer and Director of Archaeology and Museums and directed them to produce the records of the temple located in the walled city neighbourhood of Gor Gathri.
The bench issued the order on Tuesday so as to decide whether the Hindu woman named Phoolvati was the owner of the land on which the temple is situated.

Minister: Algeria to arm civilians against terror

ALGIERS, Algeria: The interior minister has reportedly said that Algeria will resume a policy of arming people to reinforce the fight against terrorism in the north African country.
Dahou Ould Kablia says the government would honor a request of some civilians in insecure areas for weapons “to fight against terrorism.” He didn’t specify which people would be armed and said the defense ministry was behind the decision. Algerian media on Wednesday published the comments made Tuesday.
Al-Qaeda’s offshoot in North Africa has its roots and has carried out killings in Algeria.
The government had a policy of arming civilians during the Islamist insurgency that left up to 200,000 people dead in Algeria in the 1990s. It was later halted under amnesty deals.

Al-Qaida in Iraq threatens attacks on Christians

BAGHDAD: Al-Qaida's front group in Iraq has threatened more attacks on Christians after a siege on a Baghdad church that left 58 people dead, linking the warning to claims that Egypt's Coptic Church is holding women captive for converting to Islam.
The Islamic State of Iraq, which has claimed responsibility for Sunday's assault on a Catholic church during Mass in downtown Baghdad, said its deadline for Egypt's Copts to release the women had expired and its fighters would attack Christians wherever they can be reached.
"We will open upon them the doors of destruction and rivers of blood," the insurgent group said in a statement posted late Tuesday on militant websites.
The Islamic State of Iraq is an umbrella group that includes al-Qaida in Iraq and other allied Sunni insurgent factions.

Oklahoma becomes first state to ban Sharia law

Oklahoma on Tuesday approved a ballot measure blocking judges from considering Islamic or international law when making a ruling.
Nearly 70 percent of voters in the state cast ballots approving the measure.
The proposition’s sponsor, Republican Rex Duncan, told reporters Tuesday that the proposition is a “preemptive strike” against judges who he worries could be “legislating from the bench or using international law or Sharia law.”
Opponents of the measure pointed out that the First Amendment bars Congress from make any law respecting the establishment of religion.

Belgian woman denies inciting Afghanistan 'jihad'

A Belgian woman serving an eight-year prison term for leading an Al-Qaeda-linked terror group insisted on Tuesday that she never incited Muslims to join the fight in Afghanistan.
Malika El Aroud, the widow of one of the killers of anti-Taliban leader Ahmad Shah Massoud, was jailed in May for leading a group which recruited youngsters in Belgium and France to wage "jihad" in Afghanistan.
She appealed her conviction and in her new trial on Tuesday she denied using a website to encourage Muslims to join the battle against NATO-led forces in Afghanistan.
"It is true that when I wrote comments on articles that appeared in the press regarding Afghanistan, I used very strong words such as 'go for it, we must kill them, we must go'," Aroud told the court.

YouTube yanks cleric’s sermon videos: NY Times

SAN FRANCISCO — YouTube has yanked videos featuring calls by Yemen-based cleric Anwar al-Awlaqi for a holy war, The New York Times reported Wednesday.
The American-born Awlaqi has been cited as a catalyst for terrorist attacks and was charged on Tuesday in absentia in Yemen with incitement to kill foreigners under the banner of Al-Qaeda.
The move by Yemeni prosecutors came several days after parcel bombs destined for Chicago were traced to suspected jihadists in Yemen.
Removal of some of Awlaqi’s hundreds of videos at YouTube follows complaints from American and British officials, according the Times.

Nahj-ol-Balaqa Translated into French

The book Nahj-ol-Balaqa has been translated into French, Howzeh News Center reports. This is the first time the entire book has been translated into French.
(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Speaking at a ceremony held to mark the translation’s release, head of the Nahj-ol-Balaqa International Foundation Ayatollah Seyyed Jamaleddin Dinparvar said the foundation had been seeking to have the book in French for more than 30 years.
Fortunately, French Muslim woman Hassina Ahmed bin Abdurrahman undertook to do the rendering, he said.
Ayatollah Dinparvar noted that Nahj-ol-Balaqa has so far been translated into 20 languages and that there are plans in cooperation with the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization to have it translated into 12 more languages.
Nahj-ol-Balaqa is a collection of sermons, letters and sayings left as a memorial from the Imam Ali (AS). The book was compiled by Sayed Radhi over a thousand years ago and before he made the efforts these jewels were scattered all over the Islamic literature.

WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama’s bid to turn the page on his predecessor’s “war on terror” is likely to be severely hampered after Republicans romped to victory in mid-term elections, analysts said.
His plan to shut down the reviled US military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and proposals to try in civilian courts the five men accused of plotting the September 11, 2001 attacks are set to run into an emboldened opposition from the Republicans, who have already stymied his agenda.
“The mid-term elections will likely further entrench indefinite detention, military commissions, and other key aspects of the ‘war on terror,’” said lawyer Jonathan Hafetz who has defended several of the Guantanamo inmates.

China using Pakistan to slow India's growth: Former US envoy

WASHINGTON: Relation between India and China has deteriorated in last 18 months and is unlikely to get better, a former US Ambassador to India has said and he shared the perception of many Indian strategic thinkers that Beijing is using Pakistan to slow India's rise.
"I think it's fair to say now that China-India relations are not very good and in fact have been deteriorating for about last 18 months," Robert Blackwill, former US Ambassador to India said in a conference call with reporters in a briefing on Obama's India visit.
"The Indians have a long list of Chinese transgressions, which in my judgment are accurate, having to do with Chinese policy on Kashmir and on the border dispute between the two countries and the so-called 'ring of pearls' of Chinese quasi-military installations in Bangladesh and in Sri Lanka and in Pakistan and so forth," he said.

Pak court declares 45 Taliban militants proclaimed offenders

Peshawar : An anti-terrorism court in Pakistan's restive northwest on Wednesday declared 45 pro-Taliban militants, including a son of radical cleric Maulana Sufi Muhammad, as proclaimed offenders and directed them to appear before it within a week.
However, some of the Taliban commanders from the Swat Valley who were declared proclaimed offenders have already been killed by security forces. They include Maulvi Muhammad Alam, Maulana Shah Dauran and Khan Khitab.
The banned Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Shariah Muhammadi (TNSM) chief Sufi Muhammad's son Matiullah, TNSM commander Maulvi Abdul Haq and the organisation's information secretary Muhammad Iqbal, were also among those declared proclaimed offenders.
The court directed the proclaimed offenders to appear before it within seven days.
Sufi Muhammad and some members of his family were arrested last year after the collapse of a peace deal he brokered with the Taliban in Swat.

US wants probe into presence of Pak jehadis in Afghanistan

Islamabad : The US has asked Pakistan's Interior Ministry to conduct a probe into Pakistani jehadis, including Lashker-e-Taiba operatives, joining militant groups in Afghanistan to attack NATO and allied forces, a media report said today.
The US has sought a probe into Pakistani militants joining rebel groups in Afghanistan, especially in Kunar province, unnamed Interior Ministry officials were quoted as saying by the Daily Times newspaper.
NATO and International Security Assistance Force commanders in Afghanistan have confirmed the presence of "modern and sophisticated Punjabi Taliban" in Kunar province.
These elements are a "more militant section of the Pakistan-backed Lashker-e-Taiba" that has broken away from the group and refused to take orders from LeT chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, the report claimed.

Iran says West's 'arrogance' could doom nuke talks

Tehran : Iran's president said on Wednesday that upcoming talks with six world powers about its disputed nuclear programme will fail if those nations continue along what he called a "path of arrogance."
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's comments, made in an address to a crowd of thousands in northeastern Iran, cast doubt on any possible progress in talks that Tehran has said it is ready to hold with the six powers - the US, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany - sometime after November 10.
The US and some of its allies suspect Iran's civil nuclear energy programme is a cover for a secret effort to develop weapons and are pushing Iran to fully open all facilities to international inspection and to give up uranium enrichment, a key element of its nuclear work that could give it a pathway to the bomb.

George W Bush admits to making errors in Iraq war: Book

New York : Former US President George W Bush has admitted that he committed many errors involving the Iraq war and said he "felt like the captain of a sinking ship" towards the end of his presidency when dealing with recession, according to his new book.
In his book, 'Decision Points', to be released next week, Bush writes of the errors involving the Iraq campaign and the failure to find the weapons of mass destruction (WMD), despite a number of US intelligence reports pointing to their existence there.
He admits feeling a "sickening feeling" when he learned there were no mass destruction weapons in Iraq and said "cutting troop levels too quickly was the most important failure of execution in the war," according to excerpts from his book, released by 'The New York Times'.

Tehran : Tehran accused the West of trying to pressurise it over the case of an Iranian woman sentenced to death by stoning, as an exiled activist said the woman was not executed on Wednesday as feared.

Putrajaya (Malaysia) : Malaysia gave its assurance Tuesday that Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim would get a fair hearing in his ongoing sodomy trial after US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton called for transparency.
"It is in my interest and in our interest to make sure that Anwar gets a fair trial," Foreign Minister Anifah Aman told a joint news conference with Clinton, who is on three-day visit. "Because if there is such a thing as political persecution, if it can happen to Anwar, it can happen to the rest of us."

Rafah : Israel's easing of its Gaza blockade has accomplished something Israeli bombing raids and an underground steel wall could not: It has devastated the Hamas-ruled territory's once thriving smuggling industry.
Now that most consumer goods can again reach Gaza through Israel - after three years of tight border closures - many of the hundreds of smuggling tunnels that once served as the Palestinian territory's lifeline have simply shut down.
Only a few dozen are still active, compared to a total of about 400, a Hamas government official said. And an Associated Press spot check in one former smuggling hot spot found only one in four tunnels working.

New Delhi : The handler of American-born Lashker-e-Toiba terrorist David Headley carried out a reconnaissance here when he came to the Capital in 2005 on the pretext of watching an Indo-Pak cricket match, according to an investigation report.
Headley while giving this information during questioning by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), reportedly said his handler Sajid Majid along with another LeT terrorist Abdur Rehman Hashim alias Pasha had visited India using the one-day match in 2005 as cover.
The match, which was played on April 17, 2005, was historic since the then Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf was among the VVIP spectators along with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. India had lost the match by 159 runs.

The inauguration comes with the church's profile in Cuba at a high after Havana Cardinal Jaime Ortega helped negotiate the release of some 52 political prisoners jailed in a 2003 crackdown on dissent.
The cardinal had warm words for both Raul and his brother Fidel at the seminary's opening, saying both had kept their word to lend the project official support.

JAMMU: Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah was on Thursday manhandled by members of BJP's youth wing at a press conference in Jammu during which the activists also ransacked furniture after gatecrashing into the venue.
A group of 10-12 Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) members barged into the room, where the chairman of the Democratic Freedom Party, Shah, was holding a press conference after his release from jail on Wednesday. They ransacked the furniture and microphones and manhandled Shah, police said.

Israel suspends cooperation with UNESCO over tomb dispute

JERUSALEM: Israel suspended cooperation with UNESCO today to protest at the cultural organisation's description of the tomb of the biblical matriarch Rachel, near Bethlehem in the West Bank, as a mosque.
"Israel has suspended cooperation with UNESCO," Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon told parliament, according to a statement from his office.
The move comes after the United Nations cultural organisation on October 21 adopted a series of decisions concerning the Palestinian territories, including one on what it called "Bilal Bin Rabah Mosque/Rachel's Tomb in Bethlehem," a formula rejected by Israel.
Ayalon said ties with UNESCO would remain frozen until it repealed the decision describing the tomb as a mosque, a definition Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described as "absurd."

Top Taliban commander held in Karachi: Official

KARACHI: Pakistani authorities on Wednesday claimed to have arrested a top commander of the banned terrorist outfit Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in an early morning raid in the country's financial capital.
A senior official of the crime investigation department (cid) said commander Qari Yousuf was arrested from Karachi's Mominabad area of Orangi Town, which is believed to be the largest concentration of slum dwelling in South Asia.
The official said that the arrest of Yousuf was a big breakthrough in the drive against terrorism as he was involved and named as an accused in the bombing of a police training centre in Mingora, Swat last year.

US to expand embassy in Afghanistan with 500 million dollars

KABUL: The United States is expanding its presence in Afghanistan, announcing on Wednesday a massive expansion of its Kabul embassy and construction of two consulates.
Washington's Kabul embassy is already its biggest in the world, with about 1,100 employees, projected to rise to 1,200 by the end of the year, officials said.
Hundreds have arrived over the course of this year as part of a "civilian surge" bringing development experts into the country to compliment the military effort already in its 10th year.
The United States and NATO have 150,000 troops in Afghanistan fighting the Taliban-led insurgency, following a military surge aimed at speeding an end to the war.

Woman jailed for stabbing UK leader on Iraq issue

LONDON: A female student, thought to have been converted to violence by a radical preacher being hunted in Yemen, was jailed for life on Wednesday for trying to murder a British politician in revenge for him voting for the Iraq war.
Roshonara Choudhry, 21, knifed former treasury minister Stephen Timms twice in the stomach during an advice surgery at an east London community centre in May. A security source said the student had been radicalised by listening to sermons issued online by Anwar al-Awlaki , a preacher based in Yemen who is wanted by Washington for links to al -Qaida.
Choudhry, who had told police she had attacked the opposition Labour politician as a punishment and to get revenge for the people of Iraq, will serve a minimum of 15 years.

Russia, NATO pledge warmer ties at Moscow talks

MOSCOW: Russia pledged on Wednesday to boost cooperation with NATO in Afghanistan and consider a joint missile defence shield, offering signs of better ties with its Cold War foes during a visit by the alliance's chief.
NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen met President Dmitry Medvedev at the Kremlin to iron out a new bilateral agreement to be signed at a summit of the 28-nation alliance in Lisbon on Nov. 19-20.
Relations are "becoming more productive and substantial," Medvedev said. "This gives an opportunity to... create a more robust security system in Europe and the world."
The United States considers NATO cooperation with Russia crucial to President Barack Obama's plans to "reset" relations, which sank to a post-Cold War low during the presidency of George W Bush and Moscow's 2008 war with pro-Western Georgia.

Pilgrim arrivals cross 1.5 million

JEDDAH: More than 1.5 million pilgrims have already arrived in the Kingdom for this year’s Haj through King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA) in Jeddah and Prince Muhammad Airport in Madinah, said Makkah Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters after inspecting the Haj Terminal at KAIA, the governor said he hoped the squatting of pilgrims in public places would end soon as a result of the measures taken by the government, including the Haj permit system.
He also referred to the precautionary measures taken by the Civil Defense and other agencies to protect pilgrims from flash floods. “All Haj-related departments have taken measures to face any eventualities during the Haj season,” he added.

WASHINGTON: The US State Department named a militant group in Iran to a US list of foreign terrorist organizations on Wednesday, a move likely to be welcomed by Tehran just weeks before the resumption of talks over its disputed nuclear program.
A State Department spokesman said adding the Jundallah organization to a terrorist list that contains 46 others — including Al-Qaeda, the Iranian-backed Hezbollah and the Pakistani Taleban — was not intended as a conciliatory gesture.
But some experts said the timing could still help smooth relations in advance of a new round of negotiations over Iran’s uranium enrichment program, the central source of tension between Tehran and Washington. Those talks are expected to resume before the end of this month.

Egypt says plans new villages to calm Sinai

EL-ARISH, Egypt: Egypt expects to finish building 17 villages in North Sinai near new industrial projects by year-end, aiming to integrate tribsemen who have often clashed with authorities, the area’s governor said.
The villages are the first of 82 planned in northern and central Sinai, an area near the sensitive Israeli border which is home to 12 Bedouin tribes.
Murad Muwafi, the new governor of North Sinai, told Reuters the government project would help draw the formerly nomadic tribes away from smuggling across the border.
“The villages projects are designed to settle the Bedouin into developed areas, to give them steady livelihoods and help them live within integrated communities,” Muwafi said.

Israel military says airstrike kills Gaza militant

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip: A senior member of a group identified with Al-Qaeda died in a fiery car explosion set off by an Israeli airstrike Wednesday, Israel’s military said.
The military said the target was Mohammed Namnam, 25, of the Army of Islam group. A military statement asserted that the Army of Islam is tied to Al-Qaeda and world jihad, but Palestinians said it does not have a direct, operational connection with Osama Bin Laden’s group.
The military said Namnam was involved in attacks against Israelis, and recently “Namnam was involved with directing a terror attack against American and Israeli targets in the (Egyptian) Sinai Peninsula, in cooperation with Hamas elements in the Gaza Strip.” It gave no further details.

Lebanon sentences 3 to death for spying for Israel

BEIRUT: A Lebanese military court has convicted three men of spying for Israel and sentenced them to death.
Lebanon and Israel technically remain at war, and more than 100 people in Lebanon have been arrested since last year on suspicion of collaborating with the Jewish state.
One of those convicted Tuesday was found guilty of giving sensitive information to Israel, repeatedly entering an enemy state and training there to use telecommunications and photography equipment to spy.
The ruling said Jawdat Al-Hakim collaborated with Israel for a decade, until his arrest in May 2009.
The two other men were tried in absentia and convicted on similar charges.
The rulings can be appealed.

Yemen’s Al-Qaeda warned tribe against collaborating

SANAA: Al Qaeda in Yemen has warned kinsmen of a US born radical preacher against collaborating with the Yemeni government, according to a statement from the group that appeared to predate last week’s parcel bomb plot.
The statement, posted on an Islamist website on Tuesday, made no mention of the plot to mail two parcels containing bombs from Yemen to the United States that was uncovered last week and is thought to be the work of the Yemen-based regional Al-Qaeda wing, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).
Earlier in October, the Yemeni government had sealed a deal with tribesmen of preacher Anwar Al-Awlaki to help security forces in their quest to root out Al-Qaeda in their native province of Shabwa.

They also held meetings and took out processions to condemn the unconstitutional acts of the former president in 2007. The lawyers pledged for a fresh initiative to achieve the objectives of the lawyers’ struggle in a cohesive and constructive manner.

KABUL: Taliban have consolidated their presence in a remote but strategic area of Afghanistan’s north, threatening the security of several provinces long seen as relatively safe, a provincial governor said on Wednesday.
Violence across Afghanistan is at its worst since the Taliban were ousted in 2001, with the Islamist insurgents spreading out of their traditional power bases in the south and east and extending attacks into the north and west.
Civilian and military casualties are at record levels as the war nears its tenth year, despite the presence of about 150,000 foreign troops. Governor of Sari Pul province Sayed Anwar Rahmati said between 500 and 600 Taliban, among them some Arab, Uzbek and Pakistani militants, are operating in Sar-i-Pul, which borders the key northern province of Balkh and adjacent Faryab and Jowzjan provinces near Central Asia, as well as several other central provinces. Moving in small groups, often by motorcycle, the Taliban have a big presence in the mountainous Sayaad and Kohestanat districts but are launching attacks in other areas as well, he said.

Ahmadinejad blasts Russia over missile ban

TEHRAN: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad criticised Russia on Wednesday for banning the delivery of S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems to Tehran, accusing Moscow of having caved in to ‘Satan’.
In comments broadcast on state TV, Ahmadinejad said the 2007 contract Tehran signed with Moscow for the S-300 remains valid and warned that Russia must pay compensation and penalties for unilaterally cancelling the deal.
The Iranian leader’s remarks come after Russian President Dmitry Medvedev issued a decree in June banning all sales of the S-300 systems to Iran, saying the latest round of UN sanctions prevent it from delivering the system to Tehran. The UN Security Council sanctions ban Iran from developing ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons, investing in nuclear-related activities and buying certain types of heavy weapons. But they do not specifically prohibit Russia from supplying the S-300.

Egyptian scrolls give tips on the afterlife in London show

LONDON: A unique exhibition of the Egyptian Book of the Dead, a set of scrolls giving advice on how to get through the afterlife to eternity, goes on display at London’s British Museum Thursday.
The museum has one of the biggest papyrus collections of the 3,500-year-old text in the world but has never before put all the manuscripts on show together, due to their fragility and a lack of space.
The Book of the Dead is a text which was left with mummified bodies by the ancient Egyptians. It features spells and hymns to the gods which it was believed would help a dead relative pass through to a state of eternity.

UN chief outraged by Iraq bomb attacks

UNITED NATIONS — UN chief Ban Ki-moon expressed outrage on Wednesday over a fresh wave of attacks in Iraq that left at least 110 people dead, his spokesman said.
“The secretary-general strongly condemns the recent spate of terrorist attacks in Iraq in which scores of civilians lost their lives and hundreds more were wounded,” his spokesman said in a statement.
“The secretary-general is appalled by these outrageous and unjustifiable acts of violence,” it added, saying Ban “appeals to the people of Iraq to remain steadfast in the wake of such brutal violence and united in their commitment to a path of national reconciliation.”
At least 64 people were killed in coordinated bombings in Shiite districts of Baghdad on Tuesday night, authorities said. On Sunday, gunmen killed 46 people at Baghdad Cathedral in an attack claimed by Al-Qaeda.

SANA, Yemen — As Yemen intensifies its military campaign against Al Qaeda’s regional arm, it faces a serious obstacle: most Yemenis consider the group a myth, or a ploy by their president to squeeze the West for aid money and punish his domestic opponents.
Those cynical attitudes — rooted in Yemen’s history of manipulative politics — complicate any effort to track down the perpetrators of the recent plot to send explosives by courier to the United States. They also make it harder to win public support for the fight against jihadist violence, whatever label one attaches to it.
“What is Al Qaeda? The truth is there is no Al Qaeda,” said Lutfi Muhammad, a weary-looking unemployed 50-year-old walking through this city’s tumultuous Tahrir Square. Instead, he said, the violence is “because of the regime and the lack of stability and the internal struggles.”

CARACAS, Venezuela — Colombia’s army has suspended seven officers and soldiers for failing to control their troops in connection with the brutal murders last month of three impoverished children near Colombia’s northeast border with Venezuela.

"Iran's Intelligence Ministry says it has arrested four Britain-linked terrorists in the western city of Marivan, who carried out five assassinations in the last two years," the English language TV channel said on its website.
The report said the men were paid by the commander of Komala, an Iranian Kurdish party it described as a "terrorist" group which it said had carried out several assassinations in western Iran since the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
