Is Ilyas Kashmiri the new Osama?

Nov 12, 2010

WASHINGTON: Ilyas Kashmiri, the one-eyed rabid anti-India leader of a Pakistan-based terror group is suspected by counter-terrorism officials to be fast emerging as a new international jihadist plotter, planning fresh strikes in Europe and US.

Considered the world's most wanted man' by counter terrorism organisations across three continents, the 40-year-old Kashmiri, is seen as a terror successor to Osama Bin Laden, CNN reported quoting top US intelligence officials.

Kashmiri brands India as his enemy number one and his group Harkat-ul-Jehad-Islami was suspected to be behind bombing of a popular bakery in Pune in 2009. But he has made it public that he has ambitions beyond south Asia, CNN said.

Born in Mirpur in the PoK, Kashmiri was once considered to be run by the Pakistan's military intelligence ISI, but is reported to have turned rouge to join and form close relationship with al-Qaida . Now American and European security agencies believe that Kashmiri is trying to infiltrate highly trained terrorists into Europe and US to launch coordinated Mumbai style attack in cities Paris, Berlin and London, CNN said.

The TV network said that as many as 10,000 foreign fighters were in Pakistan's tribal territories who were been trained to carry out suicide attacks. CNN said Kashmiri was a veteran jihadist who in early years infiltrated into Kashmir and also fought Russians in Afghanistan , where he lost his eye.

After falling foul of his ISI sponsors, Kashmiri was arrested in connection with a plot to assassinate Pervez Musharraf in 2003, but was strangely released short time later.

Intelligence officials cited by CNN say that besides being an experienced operator , Kashmiri has also managed to navigate the often perilous waters of jihadist rivalries, attracting members of other Pakistani groups to his "313 Brigade" and retaining a measure of autonomy despite pledging allegiance to al-Qaida .

If Osama bin Laden is al Qaida's "spiritual" leader and Egyptian cleric Ayman al Zawahiri is its philosopher , Kashmiri is the organization's military brain, the officials say.

As one US official cited by CNN put it recently, Kashmiri is "the key ingredient in the bad stew of senior terrorists who are planning operations in the region and beyond.”

Woman student jailed for indecency, assaulting cop

13 November 2010

DUBAI - a female student was sentenced to eight months in jail by the Court of Misdemeanours on Thursday for public indecency and assaulting a police officer.

She was also found guilty of damaging public property and consuming liquor. The court panel presided by Judge Abdel Majid Al Nezami also ordered that the 23-year-old Kenyan student be deported after serving her jail term.

The charges against were assaulting and insulting police officers on duty, damaging public property, public indecency and consumption of liquor. She was given two-month imprisonment for each charge.

A police officer told the investigating prosecutor that on December 5 last year, the Operations Room of the Dubai Police was informed about a traffic accident in the Meadows community.

When the police patrol reached the place, they found a car falling in a hole after hitting the pavement. Auto parts were left on the pavement.

“It was about 3am and we saw a woman —the defendant — trying to stop cars passing by,” he said.

The woman, whose appearance and behaviour looked awkward, ran away when she saw the policemen.

“We called for reinforcement of policewomen and we went after her,” the police officer said.

Shortly later, the police caught her.

As two of the police officers, including a woman officer, were trying to make her get inside the patrol vehicle, the student resisted them. The student did not want to accompany the policemen. “She kicked one sergeant as she tried to run away again. She also broke the rear window of the patrol vehicle.”

Then, the student lowered her trousers on the road and alleged later that the cops tried to rape her.

“She was drunk,” the officer said.

However, the student denied all charges at the police post.

Militant and cop killed in Kashmir gunfight

13 November 2010

SRINAGAR - A separatist guerrilla and a police constable were killed in a gunfight between the militants holed up in a house and security forces in north Kashmir Sopore town on Friday, police said.

Troops of the Rashtriya Rifles, paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the local police surrounded a house in Krankshivan Naseem Bagh area of Sopore early Friday following information about guerrillas hiding inside, a senior police officer said here.

It was later found that there was only one militant holed up in the house ?in Sopore, nearly 55 kilometres from here.

The militant opened fire when he was asked to surrender, triggering a gunfight that lasted several hours, the police officer said.

“A constable of the SOG, who had entered the house at 5 a.m. to carry out a surprise assault, was killed,” the officer said, adding that the bodies of the militant and the constable have been recovered. The guerrilla was a local, he added.

Friday sermon stirs millions in Makkah

13 November 2010

MAKKAH: About two million pilgrims listened with rapt attention to Imam Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais’ soul-stirring 40-minute sermon on Friday from the Grand Mosque in Makkah. The sermon was carried live on state television and many Arab, African and Asian television stations. On many occasions during the sermon the congregation was reduced to tears as the imam spoke about the tough times that Islam faces in these critical times.

Calling for the liberation of Palestine, Al-Sudais said now is the time for Palestinian factions to bury their differences.

“These differences have only added to the miseries of our brothers and sisters in Palestine. This inhuman blockade has made life hellish for them. Now is the time for Muslim countries to unify their ranks and liberate Palestinians from the shackles of this inhuman bondage,” he said. “All differences among regional countries should be and can be resolved in the true spirit of Islam. The best example of our unity is this congregation in which every Muslim from every corner is united through the love of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the Holy Qur’an.”

BEIRUT: A Lebanese military court on Friday convicted a radical imam of terrorism charges and sentenced him in absentia to life in prison, judicial officials said.

Omar Bakri Mohammed, who holds Syrian and Lebanese citizenship, lived in Britain for 20 years where he headed the now-disbanded radical group Al-Muhajiroun. Bakri was convicted of “belonging to an armed group with the aim of carrying out terrorist acts and plotting to kill Lebanese soldiers.”

‘Non-Muslims outnumber Muslims in terror plots’

Nov 12, 2010

WASHINGTON: A new report on violent extremists in the United States finds that terrorism plots by non-Muslims greatly outnumber those attempted by Muslims, and that Muslim-American communities helped foil close to a third of Al-Qaeda-related terror plots threatening the country since Sep. 11, 2001. The Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC), a not-for-profit organization advocating for the civil rights of American Muslims, commissioned the report.

Reportedly the first of its kind by a Muslim-American organization, the database tracks plots by Muslim and non-Muslim violent extremists in the United States.

One of the aims of the report, said the organizers, was to encourage the Muslim-American community to become part of the solution of the problem, as several recent unsuccessful terrorist plots has contributed to heightened public anxiety – and the search for scapegoats.

Iraq’s new government to include Sunni-backed bloc

Nov 12, 2010

BAGHDAD: Iraq’s squabbling politicians have agreed to return Shiite Nuri Al-Maliki as prime minister, ending an eight-month deadlock that raised the spectre of new sectarian violence.

The deal on the top government posts brings together Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds in a power-sharing arrangement that could help forestall a slide back into Shiite-Sunni bloodshed that raged after the 2003 US-led invasion which ousted Sunni dictator Saddam Hussein.

Sunnis might have reacted with widespread anger had the Sunni-backed Iraqiya alliance of former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi been totally excluded from government.

Some may still feel cheated of power because of Maliki’s expected return as prime minister.

Islam and the West: Reaching Intercultural Understanding

Nov 12, 2010

The signatories below and I welcome the many initiatives that are underway among governments, in civil society, and within the religious community to expand areas of cooperation between the Muslim community and other actors. President Obama's trip to Indonesia this week is an important example of the high-level attention that must be given to these relationships. Despite such efforts to enhance communications, serious obstacles remain. In almost every part of the globe, there continue to be people who have chosen -- whether out of ignorance, fear, or ill will to sow conflict where reconciliation is needed. It is up to responsible voices on all sides to make the case for constructive action based on shared interests and values. This is a duty that extends beyond governments alone, to include decision makers and other people of influence from all sectors of society. The standard we seek to achieve is not mere tolerance, but a widespread attitude of genuine mutual respect.

“Allah’s Tailors” gaining profile in Turkey

Nov 12, 2010

ISTANBUL: Along Istanbul’s busy Eminonu waterfront women swathed in dark coats and scarves knotted once under the chin jostle past others clad in vivid colours and head coverings carefully sculpted around the face.

Two decades ago such a polished, pious look scarcely existed in Turkey. But today it has the highest profile exponents in First Lady Hayrunnisa Gul and Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan’s wife Emine, and the brands behind it plan ambitious expansion.

The headscarf remains one of Turkey’s most divisive issues.

Everything from the way it is tied and accessorised, to the poise and demeanour of the wearer, is laden with meaning in this majority Muslim but officially secular country of 74 million.

US close to decision on 9/11 trial for Mohammed

Nov 12, 2010

WASHINGTON: The Obama administration is close to deciding where the self-professed mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001 will be tried and whether he will face a military tribunal, US Attorney General Eric Holder said on Wednesday.

Holder did not provide specifics to reporters and did not respond when asked if a decision on the trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed would come by the end of the year.

Holder’s initial plan to try him and four other accused plotters in a federal court in New York City was put on hold after local officials and members of Congress said he should be tried in a military court for security and other reasons.

“The process is an ongoing one. We are working to make a determination about the placement of that trial,” Holder told reporters after meeting with Canadian officials on cross-border security. “We have been working on it and I think we’re close to a decision.”

Nov 12, 2010

WASHINGTON: The expanding Pakistan-US cooperation in the field of education will help foster understanding between the two nations as they strive to build a strategic partnership, Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States Hussain Haqqani has said.

Speaking to a gathering of Pakistani Fulbright scholars and visiting vice chancellors of leading Pakistani universities, Haqqani also stressed that the trend to talk about revolution as answer to problems was a simplistic way of looking at difficult things while actual transformation would come through a tough process of reforms and enlightened education.

Hezbollah to ‘cut off hand’ of anyone over Hariri arrest

12 November 2010

BEIRUT — Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah warned on Thursday that his group would “cut off the hand” of anyone who tried to arrest any of its partisans over the 2005 assassination of ex-premier Rafiq Hariri.

“Whoever thinks the resistance could possibly accept any accusation against any of its jihadists or leaders is mistaken — no matter the pressures and threats,” Nasrallah said in a speech on closed-circuit television to mark his Shia group’s Martyr’s Day.

“Whoever thinks that we will allow the arrest or detention of any of our jihadists is mistaken,” he said, describing his political rivals as “in a hurry to see an indictment” in the five-year-old case.

Jordan jails three for killing sister over ‘love affair’

Nov 12, 2010

AMMAN — A Jordanian court has sentenced three men to between 10 and seven years in jail for killing their sister over a “love affair,” an official said on Thursday.

“The criminal court yesterday condemned two of them to death but commuted the sentences to 10 years in prison, citing extenuating circumstances,” the official said without elaborating.

“The third man was sentenced to 15 years in jail for being an accessory to the crime, but the sentence was reduced to seven years for the same reason,” the official told AFP on condition anonymity.

The three brothers, all under 30, had agreed last year to kill the 40-year-old divorced woman from Abu Alanda, in southeast Amman, because of an alleged liaison.

Abbas wants more than US “slogans” on statehood

Nov 12, 2010

RAMALLAH, West Bank: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said on Thursday US support for Palestinian statehood had yet to move beyond “slogans.”

Abbas said views in the United States and Europe had started to shift in favor of the Palestinians but expressed frustration at recent US opposition to the idea of taking the quest for statehood to the UN Security Council.

“The world has started to change. Europe has started to change and America has started to change,” said Abbas, whose administration depends on political and financial backing from the United States and the European Union.

“True, it is still at the stage of slogans, such as ‘We support the two-state solution’ and ‘the establishment of a Palestinian state is in the vital national security interest of the United States’,” he added in a speech to commemorate the sixth anniversary of the death of Yasser Arafat.

Violence in south Yemen after separatist’s arrest

Nov 12, 2010

ADEN, Yemen: Gunmen attacked a military checkpoint outside a south Yemen city on Thursday and demonstrators tried to break into a jail to protest against a southern separatist leader’s arrest, local officials said.

The checkpoint clash occurred hours before about 4,000 people, according to local residents, took to the streets in the southern city of Dalea for a second day of protests against Tuesday’s arrest of the leader of a southern secessionist group. Hasan Baoum is accused of planning illegal demonstrations.

A Dalea official said a group of protesters broke away and made an attempt to break into a local prison, but were driven off by police.

Tropical disease kills 300 in Southern Sudan

Nov 12, 2010

JUBA, Sudan: An outbreak of a parasitic tropical disease has killed more than 300 people in Southern Sudan — and the worst of the health crisis is yet to come, officials say.

The World Health Organization says the outbreak of kala azar, which began in September 2009 and has intensified in recent months, is the biggest health problem facing Southern Sudan.

More than 7,000 cases — many of them in the region’s most remote and insecure areas — have been reported this year by WHO and Southern Sudanese health authorities. The outbreak of cases is the region’s worst since 1991. More than 300 people have died since September 2009, WHO says, but officials fear the disease could spread for several more months.
