Islamabad, Nov. 22: The Pakistani authorities have released a Christian woman — Ms Aasia Bibi — who was handed death penalty by a court recently for blasphemy, officials said on Monday.
“She has been released but she has not been allowed to go home for security reasons. She has been shifted to a safe place,” a government official told this newspaper.
The officials at the presidency, however, did not confirm she has been pardoned by the President, Mr Asif Ali Zardari.
Ms Aasia Bibi from Ittanwala area of Nankana district was accused of making blasphemous remarks about Prophet Mohammed. Ms Aasia Bibi, 45, was sentenced to death after she was tried for charges under the blasphemy law. Sources said Ms Bibi was going to fill a pot of water when other women in the field said she could not touch the pot, and filed a complaint against her accusing her of blasphemy.
On Saturday, she handed over her mercy appeal to the Punjab Governor, Mr Salman Taseer. Ms Bibi pleaded that she never said anything blasphemous and the accusations were levelled against her due to some personal grudges.

“Ninewa’s Governor, Athel al-Nujeifi, was informed about the details of the incident of an attack against a Christian family in East Mosul’s al-Bakr district, during his visit to the area, which pointed out that (Muslim) citizens have deterred armed men and forced them to escape away from the district,” the source said.
He added that Ninewa Governor had “highly appreciated the attitude of the said people, who stood to the side of their Christian brothren and defended them, reaffirming Ninewa Province’s keenness to guarantee necessary protection for all minorities, including Christian brothren, reiterating necessity to protect Christians must also be by the people themselves, before the security bodies.”
A group armed men had broken through the Lady of Salvation Chruch in central Baghdad’s Karrada district last month, took several worshippers hostage, followed by an attack by security forces to liberate the hostages, thing that killed 58 people, including 5 of the attackers and 7 security elements, whilst the other victims had been from the hostages. The number of injured people had reached 75, including 15 army and police men.
Al-Qaeda Organization had announced responsibility for the attack on the Church, threatening to make Christians targets for fresh attacks.
Mosul, the center of north Iraq’s Ninewa Province, is 405 kms to the north of Baghdad.

Pakistan: Woman accuses husband of selling daughters

LARKANA, Nov 22: A woman, Tajul Khatoon Tunio, of the town of Laloo Rounk has alleged her husband Dhani Bakhsh Khaskheli for selling four daughters in gambling.
Talking to journalists outside the press club here on Monday, along with her daughters and brother Ahmed Ali, she said that her husband, who was a gambler and drug addict, had sold four daughters namely Rubina, 10, Shabana, 8, Kanwal, 6, and Rashida, 5, to Saleh Patoojo, Sattar Patoojo, Sikandar Mughiri and Niaz Mughiri for Rs30,000, Rs32,000, Rs40,000 and Rs55,000, respectively.
Rubina and Shabana had been sold about two years ago while Kanwal and Rashida about one year ago.
After developing a difference over the issue, she sought divorce from him on Nov 12 and was residing with her brother Ahmed Ali Tunio in the same village, she said.
On Nov 17, her husband enter their house with the alleged buyers and asked to hand over the girls, she said.When she refused, they started fighting which left her father Habibullah, uncle Rehmatullah and close relatives Muhammed Ali, Deedar Ali and Muhammed Juman injured.
She called for protection and arrest of the attackers.
When contacted, Supervising Police Officer Warah Khan Tunio disputing the version of Tajul Khatoon said that it was not the matter of gambling. It was a domestic dispute and five persons were injured in a clash which took place inside their house where they were living in a joint family system.
Ahmed Ali Tunio, brother of Tajul Khatoon, registered an FIR with Wagan police station on Nov 17 against Qurban, Wadhal, Barkat and Dhani Bakhsh.
Police have arrested Abdul Hameed and Qurban (maternal cousins of girls` father).
The SPO has confirmed that two girls Rubina, Shabana were traditionally named to be married with two persons.

Militants blow up girls’ school in Pakistan

Officials in Pakistan tribal region of Khyber say that suspected militants have blown up a girls school.
(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - An official said that the school was dynamited late Saturday night near Landi Kotal, main town in Khyber agency.
No one was hurt as the school was closed at the time of the blast.
Boundary wall of the school was completely destroyed while three rooms, lawn and bath room were partially damaged.
No group claimed responsibility for the attack but Taliban militants usually claim responsibility for attacks in schools.
Taliban view the current education system against Islam.
Officials say that over 40 schools, health centers and government offices have been destroyed by the militants in Khyber agency.
Thousands of students have been deprived of education due to destruction of their schools, officials say.
Residents say that the government has not taken measure for the protection of other schools and that educational institutions are being destroyed despite the presence of security forces.
Officials argue that the militants attack schools in the night.
Taliban are active in Khyber agency and attack vehicles carrying supplies for NATO forces in Afghanistan.
Two other extremist groups “Lashkar-e-Islam” and “Ansar-ul-Islam” are also active in the region.
The security forces have twice conducted major operations in Khyber Agency over the past few years and had also declared victory. But the residents say that militants are still hiding in the region.

Jeddah: Online lover leads girl to gang rape

JEDDAH: Police in the northern city of Hail are currently looking for a Saudi youth who is believed to have lured a woman friend he met online into a gang rape.
The suspect, who was not identified, is believed to have had an online relationship with the woman for about a year before convincing her to meet him after he proposed to her.
The man then picked the woman up from a wedding where she hoped her absence wouldn't be noticed.
The woman was then taken to an apartment where two of the man's friends were waiting.
After raping the woman she was dumped off near a hospital.
Hospital staff informed police who arrested the two accomplices and were searching for the main perpetrator.

Afghan Convert's Trial Delayed; Faces Possible Death Penalty

The trial of an Afghan convert to Christianity was delayed from Sunday to possibly as early as sometime this week, depending on when officers figure out how to judge the case.
Said Musa, 45, an amputee, is understood to be in prison for his Christian faith, although he has no legal representation and does not know the charges against him. Under the Afghan constitution, there is no law that bans religious conversion. As a result, officers are currently deciding if Musa should be tried under sharia law.
Sharia or Islamic law says a convert from Islam can be punished by death.
Musa was arrested and detained in May after a nationally televised broadcast by Noorin TV station showed images of Afghan Christians being baptized and worshipping. He was seen in several of the televised videos.

23 jailed for Lalmonirhat BDR mutiny

A special court on Tuesday sentenced 23 accused jawans of 31 Rifles Battalion to different terms of imprisonments for their involvement in Lalmonirhat BDR mutiny on February 25-26 last year.
The court however acquitted one of the 24 accused jawans of the battalion, as his involvement in the mutiny was not proved, reports our Lalmonirhat correspondent.
The three-member court headed by Dinajpur Sector Commander Col Muhammad Saleh Ahmad also fined Tk 100 for each of the convicts in presence of them. Two other members are Lt Col Mahfuz Alam and Major Didar Al Latif.

"I think that Muslims themselves don't need them: such provoking, bloody spectacles, no one needs them. It's a question of organization. It should be organized without provoking shows, without blood," Sobyanin said in an interview with the program Saturday News with Sergey Brilev on Rossiya TV.
"It's elementary organization that needs to be regulated. I think that it'll be settled in Moscow," the mayor stressed.

UAE says UNSC permanent seat is India's 'right'

The UAE today came out in strong support of India's quest for a permanent seat in a reformed UN Security Council, with President Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan telling his Indian counterpart Pratibha Patil that this was New Delhi's "right". "His Highness (the UAE President) stated that UAE
would certainly support India, which had the right to be a permanent member of a reformed UN Security Council," Secretary (East) Latha Reddy told reporters after the "warm and friendly" talks between the two leaders, reflecting the close ties between the countries.
Patil was accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Musharif Palace by her UAE counterpart on whose invitation she arrived here last night on a five-day official visit, her first to the Gulf region. He later hosted a banquet in her honour.

Islam and Christianity come together at Stittsville United Church

STITTSVILLE - Adherents of Islam and Christianity came together at the Stittsville United Church on Sunday, Nov. 14 and, lo and behold, the two religions are not that much different.
Islam advocates a message of peace and love, which is certainly the Christian message as well.
The two religions were the focus for a post-brunch forum at Stittsville United Church with about a dozen members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community of Ottawa joining with members of the Stittsville United Church congregation for the brunch.
Following the brunch, questions were posed to young adults of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community as well as to six members of the youth group at Stittsville United Church about faith issues, with Stittsville United Church minister Rev. Grant Dillenbeck as the moderator.

DID PRIME Minister Indira Gandhi plan to liberate Pakistan occupied Kashmir and balkanise Pakistan, after helping Bangladesh win the 1971 liberation war? This is the question senior BJP leader L. K. Advani has raised on his blog, referring to a book he recently read, Bangladesh Liberation War: Myths and Facts by New York- based journalist B. Z. Khasru.
In his latest blog entry, Advani said that he saw no reason to doubt the findings of the author.
He had not heard anyone make such a suggestion, but the book showed that the US was definitely thinking along such lines, the BJP leader wrote. “ This book carries ample data to show that whether or not Mrs Gandhi actually contemplated to achieve these objectives, Washington’s top leaders of the time, President Richard Nixon and national security adviser Henry Kissinger were both convinced that Mrs. Gandhi was seriously thinking of action in that direction, and that the Soviets were likely to help India in achieving its objective,” the blog entry said.

Mumbai: Even as Mumbai is preparing for the second anniversary of the 26/11 terror strike, a Norwegian couple who survived the attack at Café Leopold has come back on a “pilgrimage to express gratitude and share their feelings with other victims, volunteers and doctors.”
“I don't think Kasab should be hanged because that would be like rewarding him as a martyr. It is not a punishment for him. I don't see any logic in giving him what he had come for,” said Line Kristin Woldbeck at a press conference here on Monday.
She was there at Café Leopold with her boyfriend Arne Stromme (55) on the fateful night. Mr. Stromme, a landscape designer, suffered a grave injury as a bullet grazed his face and right hand fingers. An Indian friend who accompanied them for dinner did not survive.

Pak not ready for military campaign in N Waziristan

Pakistan may not undertake a military campaign in the troubled North Waziristan Agency for another four to six months despite mounting pressure from the US to move troops into the lawless tribal region, considered a hub of Taliban and Al Qaeda elements.
The Government is citing numerous reasons in apparent dilly-dallying on the offensive, a media report said on Monday.
The reasons being cited range from differences in perceptions over the scheduled withdrawal of NATO troops from Afghanistan, the US-sponsored peace plan of Afghan President Hamid Karzai and the widening role of India in Afghanistan’s affairs, The Express Tribune quoted its sources as saying.
Recent developments in the region, particularly in the wake of US President Barack Obama’s visit to India, have forced Pakistan to “think twice before opening another war front in North Waziristan”, said a former diplomat who did not want to be named.

Israel arrests 12 Palestinians in West Bank

RAMALLAH: Israeli security forces operating in Palestinian territories arrested 12 Palestinians Monday, sources said.
Palestinian security sources said the Israeli forces arrested 11 Palestinians in an ongoing raid in the West Bank village of Beit Oula, to the west of Hebron. The sources added that the eleven were arrested after meticulous house search operations.
Israeli media reported that the raids only targeted "wanted" Palestinian activists. The Israeli sources added those arrested were taken to unknown locations for questioning.
Israeli defense establishment said the almost daily arrest campaigns in Palestinian territories are part of its war against Palestinian armed groups.
The Palestinian Authority (PA) says that the Israeli raids hinder its security forces to tighten their grip on the Palestinian territories.

HRC assigns lawyer to pursue case of ‘tortured’ housemaid

RIYADH: The Human Rights Commission (HRC) has pledged to pursue the case of an allegedly abused Indonesian maid who has been hospitalized for over two weeks with severe burns and other injuries.
Sumiati Salan Mustapa has been receiving treatment in Madinah since Nov. 8.
HRC President Bandar Al-Iban has assigned lawyer Sultan bin Zahim to represent Sumiati and pursue her public and private rights.
According to a source at the HRC, Zahim will continue to pursue her general rights even if Mustafa decides not to exercise her private rights in accordance with human trafficking and Shariah laws.
Al-Iban also assigned a team of experts from the commission to follow up on the case, visit her at the hospital and prepare a full report on her case.

Afghan fighting kills more than 30 insurgents

KABUL, Afghanistan: Bombs and gunbattles across Afghanistan killed more than 30 insurgents, five civilians and two NATO coalition service members, officials said Monday, a round of violence that shows the challenges facing international forces seeking to handover security duties to their local counterparts.
Two children were among four civilians killed Monday in eastern Paktia province when a bomb ripped through the tractor they were riding on, said Ghulam Dastagir, deputy provincial police chief. He said it was unclear whether the bomb was planted on the road or on the vehicle.
In northern Kunduz province, insurgents attacked a checkpoint set up by a local police force, sparking heavy fighting. Two police officers were killed, along with 17 of the attackers, said local police chief Mohammad Ayub Haqyar.

Oklahoma court hears arguments on Shariah law

WASHINGTON:A federal court judge heard arguments Monday on an injunction blocking Oklahoma's new constitutional amendment prohibiting the use of foreign or Islamic systems of law in reaching legal decisions.
The hearing is on a request for a preliminary injunction against the new amendment to the Oklahoma Constitution. The measure was approved by 70 percent of Oklahoma voters in the Nov. 2 general election, when it was challenged in a lawsuit filed by Muneer Awad who is the Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Oklahoma.
Awad said Muslims support the way US secular courts currently handle Shariah-related issues — by calling in Muslim scholars and imams as expert witnesses in such cases as wills and divorce decrees that specify the use of Shariah principles but by ruling themselves on the legal disputes.

DHABI - The President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, said on Monday that India has an important role to play in achieving peace and security in the Indian Ocean and East Asia zone.
In a meeting with Indian President Pratibha Patil at the Mushrif Palace, Shaikh Khalifa also highlighted India’s contribution to realisation of the security at international arena.
Welcoming the Indian president and her entourage, Shaikh Khalifa said that the visit reflected the depth of cooperation, friendship and historic links between the UAE and India. “The visit will open more avenues for cooperation between the two countries in the best interest of the peoples of the two countries.”
Shaikh Khalifa hailed the contribution of the Indian community to the development projects in the UAE.

Tariq Aziz will seek presidential pardon

BAGHDAD: Lawyers for Tariq Aziz, the longtime international face of Saddam Hussein’s regime, said Monday they will seek a presidential pardon to spare him from execution.
Attorney Giovanni Di Stefano said Aziz’s defense team would ask for the pardon instead of appealing his death sentence, handed down last month for the Saddam-era persecution of Shiites political parties.
It’s a risky legal move, considering Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has granted few, if any, pardons in his more than five-year tenure and could be prevented from doing so in this case. But it comes amid pleas from the Vatican and several anti-death penalty nations in Europe for amnesty for Aziz, the only Christian in Saddam’s inner circle.
“This could be the diplomatic solution people have been waiting for,” Di Stefano said on Monday.

Acid thrower to die in C'nawabganj, two rapists get life in Chandpur

A young man was sentenced to death in Chapainawabganj for killing a girl by throwing acid while two youths got life in Chandpur for killing a girl after rape, yesterday.
Arup Kumar Goswami, Judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2, handed down the verdict in Chapainawabganj, reports our correspondent.
Convict Akhtarul Islam alias Tanu, 27, is son of Arshad Ali of Jalmachhmari village under Shibganj municipal area.
According to the prosecution, accused Tanu tried to woo his neighbour Tokiara Khatun, 20, daughter of late Zohiruddin of Jalmachhmari village, but she refused to accept his proposal.
An angry Tanu later entered her house at night and tried to violate her. Locals rescued Tokiara which followed an arbitration where locals fined Tanu Tk 12,000.
After seven months, Akhtarul threw acid on Tokiara at around 7:00pm on February 16, 1998, when she came out of her house to respond to nature's call.

CAIRO: A mob armed with knives attacked a senior lawmaker from Egypt’s opposition Muslim Brotherhood on Monday hours after he accused the government of already rigging next week’s parliamentary election, the group said.
The crowd swarmed a car carrying Saad el-Katatni in southern Egypt, slashing the tires, breaking windows and injuring his driver, said another Brotherhood member, Walid Shalaby. Onlookers intervened and the lawmaker was not hurt, he said. The attack took place as el-Katatni returned to his home constituency of Minya.
Earlier in the day, he and other top Brotherhood members held a news conference in Cairo where they asserted that a police crackdown on the group before Sunday’s election threatens to turn the polls into a sham.

Body of missing boy found in gunny bag

DADU, Nov 22: Dead body of a six-year-old boy who went missing earlier in the day was found in a gunny bag before the house of the boy`s uncles in Gulshan Shahbaz Colony in the evening on Monday.
Ms Irshad Khatoon lodged a complaint at Dadu town police station that her son Amir Malik had gone missing since 2pm.
She brought her son`s body to civil hospital where doctors carried out autopsy on the body.
Civil surgeon Dr Javaid Ahmed Dawachh told journalists that deep marks of rope were found round the body`s neck. The boy was probably strangulated to death with a rope, he said.
Ms Khatoon said that she suspected that her boy was kidnapped by her brothers Wajid, Zamir, Ghulam Mustafa and Guddu Khokhar and she had nominated them in the FIR but police did not move into action to recover her son nor did they arrested them before the boy`s body was found.

Washington : Special US Representative to Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke today said that the top leadership of Al-Qaeda terrorist network is in the Af-Pak border region.
"Al-Qaeda is in many places, but it's leadership is in the border areas between Afghanistan and Pakistan," Holbrooke told the MSNBC news in an interview.
During the course of his interview, the US diplomat ruled out any negotiations with the Taliban.
"There's no negotiation going on. There's nothing that comes close that word... There is no single enemy out there in the way there was a Ho Chi Minh or a Yasser Arafat or a Slobodan Milosevic to negotiate with," he argued.

Bhutto murder case: FIA to send questionnaire to Musharraf

Islamabad : A 32-point questionnaire on alleged lapses in security for slain ex-premier Benazir Bhutto will be sent to Pervez Musharraf following the government's decision to include the former military ruler in the probe into her assassination, Pakistani officials have said.
A joint investigation team of the Federal Investigation
Agency (FIA) has prepared the questionnaire that will be sent to Musharraf, currently living in self-exile in Britain, in a few days, FIA chief Waseem Ahmed said.
"We have prepared a questionnaire for the former President to record his statement... We want to record the statement of everybody who has any connection with the case," Ahmed told the 'Dawn' newspaper.

UN tribunal links Hezbollah to Hariri murder: report

United Nations : UN investigators have overwhelming proof that Hezbollah militants carried out the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Hariri, Canadian broadcaster CBC has said.
The United Nations expressed concern that leaks of the special tribunal on Lebanon's inquiries could influence its work on the 2005 bomb blast.
CBC said evidence gathered by Lebanese detectives and UN investigators "points overwhelmingly to the fact that the assassins were from Hezbollah."
The broadcaster, which was to show a documentary on the killing yesterday, said it had obtained copies of mobile phone and other communications in the case.
Other unconfirmed media reports have said the UN tribunal will announce indictments against Hezbollah members before the end of the year.

Witnesses said that Al-Baqshi was exposed to assault and battering on the hands of members of Mutawwa'in and rigorous religious vigilantes .

UK must free last British Muslim resident in Guantanamo, says Amnesty

Amnesty International Monday urged the UK to act to ensure the last British resident held by the US in Guantanamo Bay concentration camp is freed or put on trial.
(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - In a letter to Britain’s Foreign Secretary William Hague, Amnesty's UK director, Kate Allen, asked him to make a public statement calling for Saudi-born Shaker Aamer to either be 'charged and fairly tried or released'.
Aamer, 43, has been held at the US detention centre for almost nine years without charge. Last week, the British government announced a compensation settle for 16 UK citizens and residents held in Guantanamo who have been claiming they were tortured.
'When it announced financial settlements for former Guantanamo detainees last week, the government said it wanted to 'draw a line' under cases involving detention and alleged abuse overseas, yet Shaker Aamer is still languishing in a cell,” said Allen.

It should be mentioned that “Martyr Heydari” was born in Malayer City in 1960. He was the only son of his family. Rasoul spent his childhood with religious studies. Since he was a clever boy, he became the honor student when he was at school. He was in the second grade of high school when his family moved to Ahvaz City. They returned to Malayer City after two years. He registered in a technical school in order to continue education when they came back to Malayer City. Since then, he became familiar with the basic alphabet of politics at that time.

GENEVA (Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - The UN International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has charged Israel with violating its pledges and commitments as stipulated in the children's rights documents.
The organization said in a statement on the occasion of the Universal Children's Day and the 20th anniversary of signing the Geneva Convention on the Rights of the Child that Israel was not applying the international laws that were enacted for the sake of the children.
Catering for children is distributed among various government offices and there is no one section catering for their conditions in an appropriate manner, it added.
UNICEF also blamed Israel for the absence of a comprehensive strategy for children's rights or to implement the Convention, adding that Israel excludes the West Bank and Gaza Strip from implementation of international agreements despite being occupied lands under its military control.

UAE Red Crescent builds houses for the poor in Vietnam

The UAE embassy in Vietnam has started the execution of a project for building ten houses for the poor and needy in Hanoi.
The charity is financed by the Red Crescent Authority (RCA) of the UAE and is implemented in association with the Islamic Society in Ho Chi Minh.
The embassy is also supervising the digging of a total of 23 water wells financed by the Dar-al-Birr Society of Dubai.
Ambassador Sheikh Ahmed Ali Al Mualla paid a visit to the southern Vietnam to have a first hand knowledge about the conditions of the destitute Muslims in the rural areas.

HAVANA: NATO is a "military mafia," the war in Afghanistan is "genocidal" and US President Barack Obama deserves the prize for the "best snake charmer" who ever lived, Cuba's Fidel Castro has said.
In an article published on Tuesday in response to the Western alliance's weekend summit in Portugal, the former Cuban leader called NATO an "aggressive institution" that ignored "billions of persons suffering from poverty, underdevelopment, shortages of food, housing, health, education and jobs."
Castro, 84, communism's most visible living figure, led Cuba from the 1959 Revolution until he stepped down for health reasons in 2006, handing over the presidency to his brother Raul.

First piracy trial in 400 years opens in Germany

HAMBURG: Germany's first piracy trial in 400 years opened on Monday with 10 Somalis facing charges of hijacking a Hamburg-registered ship off the Horn of Africa.
The case, expected to last several months, is being held before a juvenile court as several of the accused say they were under 18 at the time of the alleged offence.
The accused, several of whom say they are fishermen, face maximum sentences of between 10 and 15 years in jail depending on their age.
In piracy trials held centuries ago in this northern German port city, those found guilty were beheaded. Age made no difference to the sentence.
Monday's got off to a slow start with the court taking over 45 minutes to determine the spelling and pronunciation of the names given by the accused.

Romanian soprano Roxana Briban commits suicide

BUCHAREST: Romanian opera singer Roxana Briban who sang in Bucharest, Berlin and Bangkok during a 10-year-career, has died in an apparent suicide, her husband said. She was 39.
Alexandru Briban said he found Roxana Briban's dead body in the bathtub late Saturday, with her wrists slit.
Bogdan Staicu, a spokesman for the prosecutor's office in Bucharest said ``at this moment, there is no suspicion that she was killed by somebody else,'' but an investigation is ongoing.
Briban said Sunday his wife had sunk into depression after the Bucharest National Opera severed her contract in 2009.
``She wanted to sing, even without being paid,'' he told Mediafax news agency.
From 2003 until 2010, Briban also performed at the Vienna State Opera but her collaboration ended after Ioan Holender, the Romanian-born director stepped down this year after an 18-year tenure there.

J& K victims’ relatives refuse Centre sop

THE CENTRE’S plan to apply balm on anger of Kashmiris because of the civilian deaths has suffered a setback. The families of four victims of police firing have refused to accept the compensation amount of ` 5 lakh offered by the Centre this September.
The four families include that of 17- year- old Tufail Ahmed Mattoo who was the first person killed in police firing on June 11. The home ministry has admitted that Mattoo’s death started the cycle of violence in the Valley, which resulted in as many as 109 civilian deaths till the end of September.
“ The state government is making necessary efforts to convince the families in this regard,” minister of state in the home ministry Ajay Maken told Parliament this week in reply to a question by veteran Left leader Gurudas Dasgupta.
Home minister P. Chidambaram had announced on September 25 an ex- gratia relief to the kin of the deceased at ` 5 lakh for each person killed in the civil disturbance since June. This was one of the eight initiatives for J& K announced by the Centre after a cabinet meeting.

India, UAE to sign security cooperation agreement soon

Abu Dhabi: India and the United Arab Emirates will, in the near future, sign an agreement on security cooperation, addressing issues specially relating to counter-terrorism and maritime security, Secretary (East) Latha Reddy announced here on Monday evening. The decision, she said, was taken in the course of wide-ranging talks between President Pratibha Patil — currently on a tour of the Middle East — and UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan earlier in the day. Ms. Reddy said, “Our President emphasised that the agreement on security cooperation should be signed as early as possible by the Ministries concerned on both sides.”

NSHR rescues boy

TAIF: A nine-year-old Palestinian boy was taken from his father’s custody after his mother informed the National Society for Human Rights (NSHR) that he was being abused.
The child’s parents, both Palestinians, divorced some time ago. The custody of the boy was then given to the father who then moved from Taif to live in Madinah.
It was during a visit to Madinah that the mother noticed marks on her son who said his father was beating him up with electric wires and an electric iron. The mother complained to police who questioned the father. In his defense, the father said he was merely disciplining the child and the police failed to act further.
Dissatisfied by the police’s inaction, the mother complained to the NSHR branch in Taif about the matter. Adel Al-Thubaity, an official with the NSHR, took the matter to court, which decided to award the child to the mother because of the abuse.

Soldiers who forced boy to search for bombs spared jail

JERUSALEM: An Israeli court-martial handed down suspended prison sentences on Sunday to two former soldiers who forced a Palestinian boy to search for suspected booby-traps during the Gaza Strip war, the military said.
The ruling meant the ex-conscripts, who were last month convicted of reckless endangerment and conduct unbecoming, are free but face a minimum 3-month jail term if they commit another crime. They were also stripped of their ranks as reservists.
While serving in Israel's ground offensive against Hamas-led fighters on Jan. 15, 2009, the two infantrymen helped storm an apartment building in the Gaza City district of Tel Al-Hawa.

Feuding schools of thought fuel Haj row

ISLAMABAD: The Deobandi-Barelvi schism is increasingly being reflected in the ongoing Haj scandal as the leading characters follow either of the two schools of thought.
Religious Affairs Minister Hamid Saeed Kazmi is a follower of the Barelvi school of thought, whereas one of his detractors, the chairman of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on religious affairs, Maulana Mohammad Qasim of the JUI-F, is a follower of the Deobandi school of thought.
Maulana Qasim was also head of a five-member review committee of the two houses of parliament which, after a visit to Saudi Arabia sometime ago, accused the Director General of Haj Directorate, Rao Shakeel, of financial corruption and recommended his immediate replacement.
Mr Shakeel, who is presently in the custody of FIA, in turn accused Mr Kazmi of corruption and bribery at a press conference in Lakki Marwat on Sunday.

Two terrorists killed, bombs defused

BARA: Unidentified people killed two terrorists including an Amr Bil Maroof commander in Khyber Agency on Monday, said local and security sources. Sources said two militants including a commander of Amr Bil Maroof were on their way in a vehicle to Shalobar area of Khyber Agency when unidentified gunmen opened fire on them, resulting in their death. Separately, bomb disposal squad defused a bomb planted in a house in Ghundi Sikandar Khel, Jamrod tehsil in Khyber Agency. The bomb was planted in Ashraf Khan’s house where a marriage ceremony was held on Sunday night. However, the bomb did not explode on time. In another incident, security forces defused a roadside bomb at Spin Qabar in Bara. Sources said a security convoy passing through the area was the target. staff report

KARACHI: Education plays an important role for progress and prosperity of a nation while it is important task of present government to fulfil the manifesto of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) as complete efforts are being made for furtherance of education in the province.
This was observed by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah while presiding over a meeting of the Sindh Education Foundation (SEF) held at the chief minister house here on Monday.
He stressed the need to provide maximum educational facilities in the province particularly in rural areas.
Pressing of a computer key made a computerised random selection of 1,200 schools by the chief minister. These schools are being established under an education scheme entitled the Integrated Education Learning Programme (IELP). The selected schools will be awarded to the successful applicants after verification through a rapid survey to assess the impacts of recent floods on the proposed school sites.
