----------- Muslim World Celebrates Eid al-Adha Ahmed Gamal 16 November 2010 Saudi Arabia (Mecca) - Muslims prepare for the upcoming religious holiday of Eid al-Adha, the “Celebration of Sacrifice,” also known as the Greater Eid, is an important holiday in the Muslim calendar. It marks the end of the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, reports Global Arab Network. It takes place on the 10th day of Dhul-Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar, which will fall on Tuesday this year. The date is approximately 70 days (2 Months & 10 days) after the end of the month of Ramadan, i.e. Eid-ul-Fitr. Ritual observance of the holiday lasts until sunset of the 13th day of Dhu al-Hijjah. Muslims worldwide celebrate the holiday of Eid-Ul-Adha, which commemorates the trials of Prophet Ibrahim; his wife, Hagar; and his son Ishmael. The Hajj is the Fifth Pillar of Islam and therefore is a very important part of the Islamic faith. All physically fit Muslims who can afford it should make the trip to Mecca, in Saudi Arabia, at least once in their lifetime. Every year, more than two million Muslims from more than 70 countries journey to the holy city of Mecca. They visit a shrine in the city known as the Ka’bah, built by Ibrahim and his son Ishmael at the command of God. Ka’bah is the direction where all Muslims around the world face while performing their prayers. The other four Pillars are: the testimony of faith, offering the five daily prayers, paying a certain share as charity and fasting the month of Ramadan. Eid-ul-Adha is a four-day celebration and in Muslim countries is a public holiday. It begins with Muslims going to the mosque for congregational prayers, dressed in their best clothes to thank God for all the blessings they have received and supplicate to him to guide them in their lives. It is also a time when they visit family and friends and exchange gifts. During Eid, it is obligatory to give a set amount of money to charity in order to help the poor buy new clothes and food so they too can celebrate. Men, women, and children are expected to dress in their finest clothing to perform Eid prayer in a large congregation is an open waqf field called Eidgah or mosque. Those Muslims who can afford, sacrifice their best domestic animals. The sacrificed animals, called U?hiyyah, have to meet certain age and quality standards or else the animal is considered an unacceptable sacrifice. The regular charitable practices of the Muslim community are demonstrated during Eid al-Adha by concerted efforts to see that no impoverished person is left without an opportunity to partake in the sacrificial meal during these days. During Eid al-Adha, distributing meat amongst the poor people is considered essential parts of this important Islamic festival. The attack happened in the Bangi Dar village of North Waziristan, a tribal region that is a base for insurgents responsible for many of the attacks on US and Nato forces just across the border in Afghanistan. At least four missiles were fired, two at the mud-brick house and two at the vehicle. Four of the slain were in the vehicle while at least 16 died in the flattened home. The identity of the dead was not known, and agents were trying to get more details, said the officials. They spoke on condition of anonymity in line with the policy of the intelligence agency. North Waziristan has been the target of nearly all of the US missile strikes in Pakistan this year — a number that is around 100 and a major jump over previous years. US authorities want Pakistan to launch a military offensive in the region, but Islamabad has resisted, saying it has its hands full with army operations against insurgents elsewhere in the northwest. The Pakistani government publicly denounces the drone-fired missile attacks. He has been named as 24th accused in the case which hit the headlines after the death of four Malayalee youth in an encounter with security forces in the valley in October 2008. The dead were identified as Mohd Fayaz of Kannur, Abdul Rahim of Malappuram, Rimon alias Mohd Yasin - a convert from Christianity - from Ernakulam and Fayeez of Kannur. Wali, according to the NIA, carried out his operations from Hyderabad. Last week, the agency had indicated that it had hit upon evidence to suggest a Pakistan link to the case. Investigation revealed that Bangalore blasts case accused Tadiyantavide Naseer who is also an accused in the case had taken the youth initially to Hyderabad where they were prepared ideologically and then sent across the border for weapons training. The first hits came from Mohd Jaleel, a painter, who had received phone calls from the militants while they were caught in the encounter. He led the cops to Faisal, the man who had taken Mohd Fayaz from his home in September 2008 on the pretext of a job in Bangalore. Subsequently, it came to light that Faisal was one of the main recruiting agents for Lashkar-e-Toiba and is believed to have taken at least 300 men, mostly from Kannur, to Bangalore and Hyderabad for induction in terror. Critics of the ritual sacrifice involved in the holiday, which is celebrated throughout the Muslim world, say the practice is outdated and fosters violence; they call for it to be reformed – or eliminated altogether. Nima Ali Yusuf, a 24-year-old permanent resident of the US, conspired in Southern California and elsewhere to aid al-Shabab, an al-Qaeda-linked militia trying to create an Islamic state in Somalia, the indictment states. Federal prosecutors did not provide further details on the allegations. Since 2007, roughly 20 men have left Minnesota to fight with al-Shabab. Authorities said one became the first known US citizen to do a suicide bombing when he launched an attack in Somalia. On Monday, Pakistan's envoy Amjad Sial told the General Assembly debating the annual report of the UNSC that the absence of the J&K issue was "inadvertent". However, while welcoming the UNSC report, Indian diplomats said the issue has not been part of any UNSC report since 2006. In 2005, then UN secretary general Kofi Annan declared that the "plebiscite" issue could not be enforced or self-implemented. In other words, Indian officials said, it was a "dead letter". He was asked to comment on UN excluding Kashmir from list of unresolved international issues. "The (US) President ( Barack Obama), I think was very articulate on this issue of Kashmir. The appeal was filed by Mohammad Siddiq alias Hafiz Mohammad Siddiq on behalf of 90-year-old organisation Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind (JUH). Siddiq is the general secretary of the JUH, which had taken part in the country's independence struggle. The appeal raised 33 questions of law and facts seeking to be addressed by the apex court. A three-judge special bench of the high court had ordered division of the disputed 90 ft x 120 ft Ayodhya plot of land where the Babri Masjid once stood into three parts - one to Ram Lalla deity, one to the Nirmohi Akhara and one to the Sunni Waqf Board. The JUH questioned whether the high court while deciding the case travelled beyond the pleadings of the parties because in none of the suit there was any prayer for the partition of the site. Officials from the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques Affairs took down the old kiswa and replaced it with a new one, which is made from pure silk at Makkah’s Kiswa Factory. The ceremony was attended by representatives from the Presidency of the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques and the Kiswa Factory. The changing of the kiswa is done in a particular way with the new kiswa hung over the old one from the top and then the old one removed from underneath. The Kiswa Factory was built in Makkah about 74 years ago by the Kingdom’s founder King Abdul Aziz. A new kiswa is made every year by Saudis who work at the factory. The black kiswa is made with 670 kg of pure silk, and 150 kg of gold and silver thread that is used for sewing the Qur’anic verses. It is 658 square meters in size and consists of 47 pieces, each 14 meters long and 95 cm wide. The cabinet office confirmed reports by the ITV News that the government would update lawmakers about high court actions brought by ex-prisoners, who claim British security forces were complicit in their torture. Bisher al-Rawi, Jamil el Banna, Richard Belmar, Omar Deghayes, Binyam Mohamed, Martin Mubanga all took action against the government, and the high court ordered the release of 500,000 related documents in July. Experts believe the government was keen to avoid a costly court case and the settlement was finally agreed after weeks of negotiations, with two lawyers acting as independent adjudicators. Defence minister A K Antony on Monday, in a written reply to Lok Sabha, said 1,253 terrorists had tried to infiltrate into J&K over the last three years. While 168 militants were killed, the Army lost 37 soldiers in thwarting infiltration bids since 2008. "The Army has adopted a robust counter-infiltration strategy, which has an appropriate mix of technology and human resources put together to check infiltration effectively,'' he said. In a statement, Ayman al-Batniji said the 80 prisoners, all convicted of petty crimes or participating in violent family feuds, were freed at midday, in the Gaza Strip ahead of the Tuesday start of the holiday. Another 100 detainees were given leave to visit their families for the festival, but have to report back to prison on Saturday, Batniji said. The prisoner releases were ordered by Hamas prime minister Ismail Haniya. Hamas has run the Gaza Strip since 2007, when it routed forces loyal to Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas and seized control.
