Father tries to kill Muslim girl for affair with a
Hindu
By Akash Vashishtha
Jun 2, 2010
HONOUR killing is spreading its tentacles across the country. In a
failed bid, though, the father and the brother of a Muslim girl allegedly tried
to kill her for falling in love with a Hindu boy.
The 17- year- old girl was allegedly attacked with acid, strangulated
and then pushed into a canal by the duo in the Bulandshahr district of Uttar
Pradesh on Tuesday.
The police said Gulistan, a resident of Charora locality, had an
affair with Ravindra Kumar, who stayed nearby.
Around 10 days ago, the couple fled their homes following prolonged
resistance by their families, sources said.
The lovers were traced by their families, who launched a joint search
for them.
Gulistan and Ravindra were then brought back, the police
said.
The girl and the boy stayed with their families in Charora for about
10 days.
Gulistan’s father Asgar and brother assured her they would get her
married to Ravindra. She was told they would take her to Delhi to shop for her
wedding.
On Tuesday morning, they hired an Ambassador on the same pretext.
When they reached the outskirts of the town, Gulistan’s father and brother
dragged her out of the taxi.
When she resisted, the two allegedly threw acid on her face and
strangulated her with a rope.
When the girl fell unconscious, they presumed her to be dead and fled
the spot after throwing her in the fast- flowing Ganga
canal.
“ The water seemed to have washed off the acid from the girl’s body.
She revived somehow and started screaming. On hearing her shrieks, the locals
gathered at the spot and rescued her from the canal. The girl was lying along
the inner lining of the canal,” a police officer said.
She was rushed to the district government hospital where she is
battling for life. Senior superintendent of police of Bulandshahr, Neelesh
Kumar, said: “ The girl’s wounds are critical. We have arrested her father.” “
Asgar told us he was fed up of his daughter’s activities and that her
misdemeanors had brought immense shame to his family. He said Gulistan was
previously involved with several men. Asgar said he had told his daughter to
mend her ways many times, but she failed to comply,” Kumar
said.
“ He said there was no other alternative to save the family’s honour.
So he threw acid on her face and threw her into the canal after strangulating
her. Asgar pleaded helplessness,” the senior superintendent of police
added.
When asked about the brother’s involvement, Kumar said: “ From
initial investigations, the victim’s brother seems to be involved in the case.
But his role is being probed.”

Sharia panchayat boycotts 5 Muslims for being
'infidels'
Mohammed Wajihuddin
Jun 2, 2010
MUMBAI: Has Talibanism breached the solid wall which guarded Indian
Islam for centuries? If the diktat issued by a Sharia panchayat comprising a
dozen or so clerics in the Muslim-majority town of Malegaon last week is any
indication, it seems to have.
In a shocking incident which reeks of Talibani fundamentalism and the
regressive approach of the Khap Panchayat in parts of India, the Malegaon Sharia
panchayat last Friday summarily "ex-communicated" five Muslims for allegedly
being "apostates and infidels". Islamic scholars and liberal thinkers insist
that such a unilateral decision has no standing, especially as Islam doesn't
recognise priesthood and the practice of ex-communication is non-existent,
unlike in Christianity.
The clerics declared that the five — Fareedul Abedin, Sharief
Cookerwalla, Yunus Trolleywalla, Iqbal Engineer and Yusuf Dalalthey — were no
longer Muslims after hearing many who testified that the "accused", among other
things, believed in and preached ideas and beliefs which went against Islam. One
of the charges against them is that they refuted Prophet Mohammed's divine ride,
also called Meraj.
"Their activities had created huge embarrassment. We invited all five
to present their side of the story but only one of them, Abedin, turned up. We
pronounced them out of Islam, as reliable witnesses testified against them,"
said Mufti Ismail, local MLA and head of the Jamiautul Ulema in
Malegaon.

Saudi money used in terror: Aghan official
Jun 02 2010
London : Millions of dollars from Saudi donors routed to Afghanistan
through Pakistan’s tribal areas, have fuelled terrorism in the country during
the last four years, Afghan financial intelligence unit has
claimed.
The funds, totalling more than £920 million, entered from Pakistan
where they are converted into rupees or dollars, the favoured currency for
terrorist operations, the Afghan financial intelligence unit FinTraca has
claimed.
“We can trace it back as far as an entry point in Waziristan,” said
Mohammed Mustafa Massoudi, the DG of Fintraca in Kabul. “Why would anyone want
to put such money into Waziristan? Only one reason —
terrorism”.

Fears for rights of Afghan women over peace
talks
2 June 2010
A three day national peace conference has begun in the Afghan
capital, Kabul, but the 1600 delegates have already received death threats from
the Taliban.
Rocket attacks and gunfire, close to the meeting, coincided with
President Hamid Karzai's opening speech.
The aim of the talks is to create a framework for any future
negotiations with the militants.
A lot is resting on these talks and there are plenty of worries.
There are fears from human rights groups that the gains made in the past nine
years may be jeopardised if there is a deal at the peace
gathering.
Some think that the rights of women may be
eroded.

Israelis shot people in the forehead, says Pakistani
journalist
June 2, 2010
A Pakistani journalist who was captured during a naval attack on the
Gaza-bound aid flotilla said today that Israeli soldiers were shooting people in
cold blood.
Talat Hussain, one of the 124 people arriving in Jordan following
their release by the Israeli authorities, said the commandos "shot people in the
forehead".
"I witnessed myself the first Israeli assault on the ship. There was
no weapon on the ship," Hussain told Aaj news channel by phone from
Jordan.
"Scuffles broke out when the Israelis tried to arrest people. After
that people threw at the Israelis whatever they got hold of. Four people were
shot in the forehead in front of me. I witnessed four people dying," said
Hussain, executive director and anchor of Aaj Television.
He said he would provide a video of the whole episode and further

Deported activists recount Israeli ‘piracy’

PASSENGERS on board the aid ships seized by Israeli authorities who
were deported to their countries on Tuesday recounted the horrors of the
raid.
They included a Turkish woman who had brought her one- year- old baby
on the voyage.
Nilufer Cetin said she agreed to be extradited from Israel after
being warned jail conditions there would be “ too harsh” for the
baby.
She and her son had been on the Turkish- flagged Mavi Marmara ship.
Cetin said she and her baby, the youngest passenger on board, had stayed in
their cabin’s bathroom during the raid. Cetin’s husband, Ekrem, is the ship’s
engineer and is still being held by Israeli authorities.

Obama speaks to Turkish PM Erdogan over Israeli
raid
Jun 2, 2010
WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama spoke with Turkish Prime
Minister Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday to express his condolences for those killed
in an Israeli raid on a Turkish aid ship bound for Gaza, the White House said.
Turkey, a key ally of the United States, has reacted angrily to
Monday's raid in which nine people were killed when Israeli commandos stormed
the ship. It had been trying to break an Israeli blockade on Gaza.
The White House said in his telephone call with Erdogan, Obama had
reiterated the United States' support for "a credible, impartial, and
transparent investigation of the facts surrounding this tragedy."
"The president affirmed the importance of finding better ways to
provide humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza without undermining
Israel's security," the White House said in a statement.

Under fire for attacking aid flotilla, Israel drags India, Pak into

Jun 2, 2010
JERUSALEM: In an unusual step, Israel, which is facing global
criticism for attacking an aid flotilla, has said violent incidents in countries
like India and Pakistan in the past one month which claimed 500 lives have been
"ignored" while it is being condemned for its "unmistakably defensive actions".
Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman "reminded" the UN
Secretary General Ban Ki-moon that in the past month alone 500 people were
killed in various incidents in Thailand, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq and India,
a Foreign Ministry statement said.
"While the international community remained silent and passive, and
generally ignored the occurences, Israel is being condemned for unmistakably
defensive actions," a Foreign Ministry statement quoted Lieberman as saying.

How to Stop the Ground Zero Mega-mosque
By Alyssa A. Lappen
2 June 2010
Expose Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf’s history, his statements in Arabic,
and his organization’s appallingly incomplete tax filings. Manhattan Community
Board 1 gave their nod of approval to construction of a highly contested,
15-story mega-mosque at the former Park Place Burlington Coat Factory — 600 feet
from Ground Zero.
But this is hardly a final word on the matter.
New York City community boards function as mere advisory bodies, with
no authority to make legally binding decisions for or against any proposed New
York City structure. And while a motion to postpone the vote was defeated, the
approval hardly represented resounding community support: only one board member
voted no, but ten members abstained.

No Evidence To Nail Bhatkal?
Dippy Vankani
Jun 02 2010
A week after the arrest of Abdul Samad Bhatkal from Mangalore, the
Anti-Terrorism Squad has not managed to find any substantial evidence against
him to nail him in the Pune blast case. Ironically, when he was arrested, he was
touted as a “prize catch” in the Pune blast, but on Tuesday, the ATS in its
remand application filed in court
has mentioned that they did not need his custody in the case.
Further, the application did not mention anything about his involvement in the
German Bakery blast in Pune.
Interestingly, on the day of his arrest, even Union home minister P.
Chidambaram had congratulated the ATS on making the first arrest in the Pune
blast case. However, the enthusiasm seems to have ebbed. A couple of days
earlier, Mr Chidambaram sidestepped questions on Samad and urged “caution”. What
made Samad such a controversial figure right from the onset was the fact that
both the Indian Mujahideen founders Riyaz and Iqbal Bhatkal are originally from
Bhatkal town in Karnataka.

Pune blast: Court rejects bail plea of Bhatkal
Jun 02 2010
Mumbai : A local court today rejected the bail plea of Abdul Samad
Bhatkal, a prime suspect in the Pune German Bakery blast, saying that since the
probe was on, it would not be safe to release him.
23-year-old Samad sought bail soon after he was remanded in judicial
custody till June 14 by Metropolitan Magistrate M V Morale in connection with a
2009 arms seizure case.
He wanted bail on the grounds that there were no serious allegations
against him, and that three other accused, who were arrested in the arms case
last year, were already out on bail.
The court rejected the bail application stating that investigations
were still in progress and releasing the accused now would not be
safe.
The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), which had arrested Samad
from Mangalore, did not seek his further custody and told the court that he may
be remanded in judicial custody.

Muslim population 'rising 10 times faster than rest of
society'
June 2, 2010
The Muslim population in Britain has grown by more than 500,000 to
2.4 million in just four years, according to official research collated for The
Times.
The population multiplied 10 times faster than the rest of society,
the research by the Office for National Statistics reveals. In the same period
the number of Christians in the country fell by more than 2
million.
Experts said that the increase was attributable to immigration, a
higher birthrate and conversions to Islam during the period of 2004-2008, when
the data was gathered. They said that it also suggested a growing willingness
among believers to describe themselves as Muslims because the western reaction
to war and terrorism had strengthened their sense of
identity.

New aid boat fresh challenge to Israel
Jun 2, 2010
JERUSALEM: Pro-Palestinian activists sent another boat to challenge
Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, a day after a botched raid on an
aid flotilla ended with Israeli soldiers killing nine activists. This came even
as the Security Council issued a statement condemning the deadly raid and
demanding an impartial investigation into the incident.
The raid provoked ferocious international condemnation of Israel,

blockade that has deepened the poverty of the 1.5 million Palestinians living in
the strip. The pro-Palestinian flotilla had been headed to Gaza with tens of
thousands of tons of aid that Israel bans from Gaza.

Osama a 'frequent flyer' in BA magazine
Jun 2, 2010
LONDON: In an embarrassing turn of events, a staff magazine of
British Airways carried a front-page photo of Osama bin Laden, labelling him as
a frequent flyer with the airlines.
BA's in-house Heathrow newspaper LHR News showed a photo illustrating
a scheme to let passengers receive their boarding pass via their iPhones. The
photo shows a smiling check-in steward greeting a happy passenger while another
holds his iPhone up to the camera. A close-up shows a white boarding pass
bearing the name Bin Laden/Osama.
To compound BA's embarrassment, the pass also classes the world's
most wanted terrorist as a "frequent flyer". The gaffe doesn't end there
—Osama's seat is 7C, which would put him firmly in First Class.
A BA spokesman said there was no malicious intent behind the front
page of the magazine.

lack of cooperation” with the UN on its nuclear programme.
National Security Council spokesman Michael Hammer reacted to
portions of a restricted UN report which revealed on Monday that Iran had

Strip in 2003, set off on Monday from Malta, organisers said. It was carrying 15

The 'peaceful' Jihad in America
By ANDREW C. McCARTHY
June 2, 2010
Most Americans don't realize that jihad is about much more than
terrorism.
Even the terrorists don't blow up buildings for the sake of blowing
up buildings. There is method in their madness.
Jihad is not mindless mass-murder, nor is it a syrupy "internal
struggle to become a better person." No, jihad is the mission to establish and
spread sharia.
The installation of Allah's law, believed by Muslims to be a divine
injunction, is the necessary precondition to the creation of Islamic societies.
While it can, and often is, waged forcibly, Islamists don't resort to violence
(or, at least, to more violence) where surrenders, appeasements and
capitulations are available.

Muslim Veil Bans and European Rationalism
June 2, 2010
The struggle to preserve secular values is coming to a head in
Europe, where a sudden surge in anti-fundamentalist Muslim sentiment has
resulted in a crackdown on the full Muslim veil. Numerous jurisdictions across
the continent have instituted or attempted to institute bans in an effort to
stem what they see as a radical form of Islam which conflicts with the
fundamental values of dignity and equality which European democracies stand for.
Do these veil bans reflect a general fear of Islam, or a fear of a
fundamentalist form of the religion which oppresses women? It seems to be a
combination of both, but it is easy to understand the European apprehension
towards the more radical elements of Islam.

Fighting in central Somalia kills 24: Rights
group
June 2, 2010
Fighting in two central Somali towns left least 24 people dead and 50
wounded as rebels clashed with a pro-government militia, a rights group said on
Wednesday.
The moderate Ahlu Sunna Waljamaca group that is aligned with
president Sheikh Sharif Ahmed's weak UN-backed administration fought with al
Shabaab insurgents in Marergur and Gadon towns in the Galgadud region on
Tuesday.
"At least 24 people died and 50 more were wounded, mostly combatants,
in the long hours of fighting," said Ali Yasin Gedi, vice chairman of the
Mogadishu-based Elman rights group.
"Civilians fled to bush areas, some were barefoot with no
belongings."
Western security agencies say Somalia -- a failed state that has been
torn by civil war for nearly two decades -- has become a haven for militants
including foreign jihadists, who are using it to plot attacks in the region and
beyond.
