Malawi move to ban polygamy angers Muslims
01 May, 2010
Muslims in Malawi have been angered by government plans to ban
polygamy.
A spokesman for the Muslim Association of Malawi told the BBC the
proposed law would discriminate against the country's Muslim
minority.
He said with about 6% more women than men in Malawi, if polygamy were
banned, many women would be left without a husband and become
prostitutes.
The gender minister said the ban was necessary to prevent women from
being abused in polygamous relationships.
She said problems occurred because men could not give their full
attention to more than one woman.
"When a man has two, three, four wives, they are not co-operative -
one will be the loved one," said Gender Minister Patricia
Kaliati.
It had not been a hasty decision and there had been wide consultation
about the matter, she said.
But Imran Shareef Muhammed - secretary general of the Muslim
Association of Malawi - disputed this.
"The minister is lying - she didn't consult the Muslim community," he
told the BBC's Network Africa programme.
"We are totally rejecting it. There are also other ethnic groups [who
practise polygamy] and they also totally reject this," he
said.
"If these people go ahead banning polygamous marriages it means many
women will go into prostitution.
"Every woman has the right to be under the shelter of a
man."
He said under Sharia law, polygamy was
optional.
"I have only one wife, my dear wife... but the moment they proceed
with this, I will take a second wife," he said.
Should the ban come into affect, those already in polygamous
marriages would not be affected, but those who flout it could face imprisonment,
the minister said.

Strike in Kalat against acid attack
By Amanullah Kasi
01 May, 2010
QUETTA: Kalat closed on Friday in protest against Thursday’s acid
attack on three sisters. The strike was observed on a call given by Baloch
nationalist parties.
At Mangochar, protesters blocked the National Highway which connects
Quetta with Karachi.
Balochistan National Party-Mengal, Balochistan National Front,
National Party, Balochistan National Party-Awami, the three factions of Baloch
Students Organisation and tribal elders condemned the heinous assault in which
Sakina, Saima and Fatima suffered serious burn injuries.
Baloch nationalist groups blamed ‘hidden hands’ for crimes against
women and demanded that culprits should be brought to book and
punished.
They said that spraying innocent women with acid was a conspiracy to
project the Baloch as conservative people.
Federal Minister Mir Israrullah Zehri who hails from the area accused
police and intelligence personnel of not taking adequate action to prevent such
attacks, the first having taken place in Dalbandin.
In Quetta, a demonstration was held in protest against the acid
attack and kidnapping of Hindu traders for ransom.
Addressing the protesters outside the press club, Habib Jalib Baloch
accused intelligence agencies of carrying out acid attacks on women and
distributing pamphlets in the name of a fictitious organisation to create panic
among women and defame the Baloch.

Crucial info given out to Pak officials

01 MAY 2010
New Delhi, April 30: Indian diplomat Madhuri Gupta used to pass
crucial information of Indian intelligence agencies to her handler and ISI agent
Rana allegedly by creating fake email IDs.
Investigating agencies have sent the hard-disc of her computer for
forensic examination. Report of the forensic examination of the hard-disc will
also reveal the close contacts of Ms Gupta in Pakistan as well as in India,
sources revealed.
According to sources, she reportedly disclosed her interrogators that
Rana taught her how to create fake email IDs.
Whenever Madhuri had to pass some information to Rana, she used to
send it through fake e-mail IDs instead of informing the latter on mobile phone,
sources said.
“Immediately after three or four meetings with the diplomat, Rana
taught her how to create fake e-mail IDs. Not only Rana, she passed some crucial
information to Pak officials also through fake IDs. Further interrogation of
Gupta will reveal the identity of Pak officials who were in touch with her”,
sources said.
“Gupta’s interrogators are also trying to ascertain the identity of
one more ISI official who was in regular touch with Ms Gupta. There are
confirmed inputs that, besides Rana, one more ISI official was there with whom
Ms Gupta used to share crucial information. There are also reports that Ms Gupta
had once met them in Kuala Lumpur, which is being investigated,” sources added.
Ms Gupta also revealed names of more Pakistan intelligence officers
with whom she shared some crucial details. However, officials interrogating her
said that most of the information which Ms Gupta had was not important at all.
Investigating agencies plan to question senior Indian officials who were posted
with her in Baghdad.

‘Wireless message establishes Advani's presence at Babri

01 May, 2010
LUCKNOW: Senior IPS officer Anju Gupta, who was the personal security
officer of BJP leader L.K. Advani on December 5-6, 1992 at Ayodhya and key
witness in the Babri demolition case, on Thursday, said she knew he remained at
the scene even after she had left because a police wireless message notified her
of the precise time of his departure.
She was answering questions put to her by defence counsel of the BJP
leaders facing trial in a Rae Bareli court for their role in the demolition of
the mosque.
Asked how she could have told the court on March 26 that Mr. Advani
was present till 7.55 p.m. when she herself left his side around 6.30 p.m. to
control the crowd elsewhere, Ms. Gupta said she received a police wireless
message informing her that the BJP leader was getting ready to move at 7.55 p.m.
This meant he was definitely at the scene till then, she
said.

JAIPUR/AJMER: After the Malegon blasts, the role of the radical Hindu
outfit, Abhinav Bharat, resurfaced with the Rajasthan Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS)
on Friday arresting Devendra Gupta for his involvement in the Ajmer dargah

Three people were killed and 30 others injured when explosives kept

Can Islam and Secularism dialogue with each
other?
By Maulana Waris Mazhari,
1 May 2010
The question of whether or not there can be a dialogue between Islam
and secularism is a particularly pertinent one today. Many Muslims, including
the vast majority of ulema and Islamists, believe that these ideologies are
polar opposites. Hence, they insist, there is no possibility of arriving at even
a minimum consensus between the two.
Yet, the question of dialogue between Islam and secularism remains
one of particular importance, especially in the context of the rights of Muslims
living as minorities in non-Muslim-majority countries. Numerous non-Muslim
scholars and even some noted Muslim intellectuals (such as the Pakistani writer
Mubarak Ali, the Indian Islamic scholar Maulana Wahiduddin Khan, and the late
Professor Mushirul Haq) complain that where Muslims are in a majority, they
brand secularism as ‘anti-Islamic’ and a threat to Islam and its followers, but
where they are in a minority, they regard it as a blessing. Furthermore, where
they are in a minority, they seem to argue for a secular state but, at the same
time, insist that Muslims must remain safe from
secularism.

Foreign troops kill three Afghan women

KABUL: International troops opened fire on a car in Afghanistan
Friday, killing two women and a girl after mistaking them for Taliban, the
Afghan interior ministry said.
The victims were among five civilians, who were traveling on a
highway in Zabul province when they came under fire, ministry spokesman Zemarai
Bashary told AFP.
“A foreign forces convoy opened fire on a vehicle coming the other
way, thinking they were Taliban,” said Bashary. “Two women and one girl were
killed and one other woman was wounded.”
The nationality of the soldiers was not immediately clear. Nato’s
US-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said it had received no
reports of any such incident in Zabul, but was checking.
The deaths sparked furious protests in Kandahar, the Taliban’s
spiritual capital, and expressions of regret from Nato and US Defence Secretary

Kurd rebels 'attack army outpost'

Kurdish rebels have attacked a military outpost in eastern Turkey
killing four soldiers and wounding several, officials sources
say.
They say militants from the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK)
used rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles in the attack near
Nazimiye.
The government has intensified efforts to end the insurgency in
recent months.
The PKK has been fighting for autonomy in Turkey's largely Kurdish
south-east for more than two decades.
Officials quoted by the semi-official Anatolia news agency said the
rebels had staged the attack at about midnight on Friday, and that the fighting
had continued until dawn.
Several rebels are reported to have been
killed.
There have been a number of clashes between rebel and government

An ideological split at the heart of Islam

Iran's green movement is defined by an Islam of freedom, a model

The current situation in Iran is both a result of and response to a
complex combination of socio-political repression and economic corruption. But
it is expressed through a range of different discourses – nationalist and
leftist, to be sure – but most significantly by different Islamic discourses
that read the uprising as a struggle between an Islam of power, represented by
Iran's ruling regime, and an Islam of freedom, represented by many Muslim

My Name is Khan too, say Syrians
By Sami Moubayed
01 May, 2010
DAMASCUS - In a bygone era, cinema-going in Syria was a popular
event, shared by young and old. Men would dress in full attire, women in evening
gowns, and children with bow ties, to attend blockbuster films in Damascus.
That came to an abrupt end in the 1960s when the importation of
foreign films fell under the strict monopoly of the government, which then
practiced a radical brand of socialism. All films from the United States were
banned and replaced with those cranked out by the Soviet Union.
The only American films in the country were those smuggled in on
VCRs. By the 1990s, satellite television had arrived, then came today's plush
cinema complexes with state-of-the-art technology. These made use of a law
passed by President Bashar al-Assad
that broke the state's monopoly over the importation of foreign films
and Damascus now boils with international blockbusters.

The issue is being debated elsewhere in Europe, especially in France,

The lower house of parliament in Brussels passed the draft law almost

Indonesia to ratify nuclear test ban treaty
May 1, 2010
NEW YORK: Indonesia said Friday it will soon ratify the Comprehensive
Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, a step hailed by disarmament advocates as helping the
treaty to enter into force.
"I warmly welcome the statement made today by Foreign Minister Marty
Natalegawa to the Indonesian Parliament that Indonesia will soon ratify the
CTBT," said Tibor Toth, the executive secretary of the treaty's secretariat in
Vienna.
"This announcement is of crucial importance in moving the treaty
closer to entry into force, and underscores the leadership role of Indonesia in
regional and global non-proliferation and disarmament efforts," Toth said.
The treaty bans nuclear tests in the atmosphere to prevent
radioactive fallout on the earth.
The treaty has been signed by 182 countries, of which 151 have
ratified by adopting national laws to implement the treaty. But the treaty
demands that the world's 44 countries with nuclear technology must all ratify
before it enters into force. Of the 44, nine have not yet ratifed.
The nine are Indonesia, China, North Korea, Egypt, India, Iran,

In France, forcing women to wear burqa will draw jail
term
May 1, 2010
PARIS: France will jail and impose huge fines on anyone who forces a
Muslim woman to wear a full-face veil, according to a leaked version of a
proposed law revealed on Friday.
While women will face only a 150-euro penalty if they choose to don a
burqa or a niqab, President Nicolas Sarkozy wants to slap one-year prison terms
and $20,000 fines on those who make others wear them.
“No one may wear in public places clothes that are aimed at hiding
the face,” says the text of a new law that is to be presented to parliament in
July, according to a copy seen by the pro-government newspaper Le Figaro.

Pakistani workers’ conditions similar to 1886 Chicago
labourers
01 May, 2010
LAHORE: The condition of workers in Pakistan is very similar to that
of the labourers of Chicago in 1886, Working Women Organisation (WWO) Executive
Director Aima Mehmood said on Friday.
Aima was addressing a demonstration organised by the WWO outside the
Lahore Press Club to commemorate the Labour Day. She said female workers had
been demanding less working hours, better pays, permanent jobs and
implementation of labour laws. She also said working women in Pakistan were
ready to sacrifice anything for their rights just as the rebels of Chicago did.

Philippine forces kill 5 rebels in raid before
poll
01 May, 2010
MANILA: Philippine forces killed five members of the Abu Sayyaf group
in a raid on their hideout in the southern jungles, a marine commander said on
Friday, days before a national election the rebels have vowed to attack.
Soldiers seized explosives and bomb-making materials after heavy
fighting with the Muslim militants linked to al Qaeda on Basilan island. One
soldier was killed and dozens wounded on both sides, said Brigadier-General
Eugene Clemen. “Our troops found the Abu Sayyaf’s bomb factory,” Clemen told
reporters, adding the rebels planned to disrupt the presidential and
congressional elections on May 10. Muslim separatists and Maoist guerrillas have
in the past attacked voting centres and harassed people trying to vote in the
country’s troubled south. Bomb-making manuals in Arabic, mobile phones, two-way
radio sets, electric circuits, switches and detonating cords were also seized
from the militants’ base in a wooded area near Sumisip town, Clemen said.

Qassim incident triggers fresh debate over women
EMTs
May 1, 2010
JEDDAH: The death of a student of Al-Qassim Teachers’ Education
College for women earlier this month sparked a new debate in the Kingdom about
allowing women to be emergency medical technicians.
According to a report in the daily Al-Shams, the girl died from an
unknown health emergency because a team of Saudi Red Crescent Society
responders, who were all men, were delayed by women security guards from
entering the campus.
The guards insisted that they would take the girl to hospital rather
than allowing any men volunteers to enter the campus. As the guards and rescuers
squabbled, the girl breathed her last.

For aspiring Imam, lessons in tolerance
May 1, 2010
WASHINGTON: If there were a prototype for an American-style imam,
Adeel Zeb might be it.
In Qur’an study groups, the 28-year-old volunteer chaplain at
American University weaves in references to US Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., and
comedian Dave Chappelle (both Muslim), TMZ.com, frat life and President Barack
Obama.
He preaches tolerance and civic idealism and sports a pinstriped
suit, a GQ-ish trimmed beard and an animated delivery he learned from the
Baptist college where he minored in communications. He’d like to become part of
the first generation of American-born imams, but it’s a career path that is
proving much more difficult than he expected.

Video of Jordanian CIA bomber urges Muslims to wage
jihad
01 May, 2010
CAIRO: The Jordanian doctor who killed seven CIA employees in a
suicide attack in Afghanistan late last year called on Muslims to wage jihad and
become martyrs in a posthumous message posted on extremist websites
Friday.
Humam Khalili Abu-Mulal Al-Balawi also said in the 29-minute audio
recording that Islamic countries have been "plagued with despotic leaders" who
discourage Muslims from jihad, and lamented that holy war has become little more
than an adventure in the eyes of many Muslims.
"How long will love for jihad be just a dream, little more than a
hobby which you do on your off-time?" he said.

Kashmiri behind Khawaja’s murder?
Amir Mir
May 01, 2010
LAHORE: The Pakistani authorities, investigating the March 25
abduction and subsequent assassination of the former ISI official Khalid Khawaja
believe that the killers, “Asian Tigers”, which had demanded $10 million and
release of a senior commander of the Afghan Taliban Mullah, was actually a cover
for Harkatul Jihadul Islami (HUJI), led by Commander Ilyas
Kashmiri.
According to well-informed sources in the Pakistani security
establishment, Ilyas Kashmiri is currently based in the Mir Ali area of North
Waziristan from where the body of Squadron Leader (R) Khalid Khawaja was
recovered on April 30, almost a month after his abduction along with another
retired ISI official Colonel Sultan Amir Tarar, commonly known as Colonel Imam
and a British journalist of Pakistani origin, Asad
Qureshi.
