Yemen hurtling towards civil war,40 killed

May 27, 2011

Sanaa: More than 40 Yemenis were killed in pitched street battles in the capital on Thursday as fighting aimed at ending President Ali Abdullah Salehs threedecade-long rule threatened to ignite civil war.

Residents were hurriedly strapping furniture, stoves, baby cots and other possessions to the roofs of cars and trucks and streaming out of Sanaa by the thousands, hoping to escape the violence that has killed more than 80 people since Monday.

The fighting, pitting the security forces of President Saleh against members of the countrys most powerful Hashed tribe led by Sadiq al-Ahmar,was the bloodiest Yemen has seen since protests began in January.

The defence ministry said 28 people were killed in an explosion in an arms storage area of Sanaa on Thursday.

Fighters in civilian clothes roamed some districts and machine gun fire rang out sporadically.

Sporadic explosions could be heard in the capital near the protest site where thousands of people demanding Saleh to leave are still camped.Black smoke from mortar fire hung over Sanaa like a shroud.REUTERS

Revenge attack: Suicide bomb toll climbs to 36 in Hangu, Pakistan

May 27, 2011

Peshawar: A Taliban suicide car bomb struck Pakistani police on Thursday for a second day, killing 32 people as the militia vowed no reprieve in their quest to avenge the US killing of Osama bin Laden.

A pick-up vehicle crossed the district police office in the town of Hangu, police official Latif Khan said, before exploding at a barrier outside the city police station, creating a 10ft long and footdeep crater.

The buildings housing the police station,DPO office and nearby residence of the DPO were partially damaged but at least 15 shops, including a tea house and a restaurant, are completely razed,"he said.

Regional police spokesman Fazal Naeem feared most of those killed were policemen and predicted that the toll would rise, because there are offices and residences of senior police and administration officials near the attack site.

This was a small attack to avenge Osama's martyrdom, a spokesman for Pakistan's main Taliban faction,Ehsanullah Ehsan, said.AFP

Thousands rally in Iraq against U.S. troop presence

May 27, 2011

Iraqi Shiite militia fighters led a massive rally of followers of a hard—liner anti—American cleric on Thursday, marching in Baghdad in a show of defiance as Iraqi leaders weigh whether to keep U.S. troops in the country beyond the end of the year.

An estimated 70,000 supporters of Muqtada al—Sadr waved Iraqi flags and shouted “No, no, America!” as the tight columns of the unarmed but ominous Mahdi Army marched though one of Baghdad’s poorest neighbourhoods.

U.S., Israeli and British flags were painted on the pavement to be stomped on by the marching protesters, and Iraqi military helicopters buzzed overhead while soldiers stood guard to keep peace if needed.

Bomb rocks Istanbul; PM hints at terrorism

May 27, 2011

A bomb that exploded Thursday in Istanbul’s upscale Etiler neighborhood, wounding eight people including one police officer passing by, seems to have been the work of a terrorist organization, according to the prime minister.

“Once we have the final conclusions, authorities including Istanbul’s governor will make the necessary explanations. It would be wrong to declare anything at this point. When we look at it, we can easily realize the explosion is related to a terrorist organization,” Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan told journalists Thursday during a visit to the governor of Central Anatolian province of Nigde, according to a Dogan news agency, or DHA.

Yazgülü Subatli and 38-year-old Ayten Bal were seriously injured in the explosion, with the latter having reportedly lost her leg.

Delhi Chief Minister assures action against the publisher of Diamond Comics over Blasphemy against Prophet Mohammad

By New Age Islam News Bureau

27 May 2011

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit Chief Minister was reportedly shocked to see photographs and blasphemous statements about Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) published in Diamond Comics and expressed her displeasure over it. She assured a delegation of Muslims that she will look into the issue of blasphemy allegedly committed by Diamond Comics and see that action is taken in three or four days. Asked if she would get the editor of the said publication arrested she said that so far she had not seen the proof but now that she has she will take necessary action in the next 3-4 days.

The issue of Diamond Comics having published photographs and blasphemous statements about Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was presented to the Chief Minister of Delhi for her follow up. A memorandum in this effect was also handed over to her asking her to take action against the publisher and editor of the said comics. Maulana Shah ul Hameed, Director Islami Taalimi Board of India, informed her that “they had demonstrated on Jantar Mantar as well on 17th of May 11. The said editor is misguiding the people and the police, saying the Comics to be of 2008. The copy we being submitting for your kind perusal is that of 31st April, 2011, you can yourself see it.”

Shakeel Ahmad Masheeri, President All India Babri Masjid Construction Front asked the Chief Minister to take action in this regard, at her earliest. He said we have visited many responsible people and have requested the same. Nothing concrete has come out of it so far. We believe you will take stern action. Whatever we have done till today has been under the boundaries of law, rules and regulations but if the editor is not arrested at the earliest the situation in the country may become volatile. Gulshan Rai is still roaming scot free. The delegation registered its hurt and anger.

The Chief Minister asked them to be satisfied that an FIR has been registered but the delegation members asked her to arrest him as registering an FIR was not enough. They informed the CM that the police say it cannot take any action unless they get a nod from Delhi Home Minister.

A delegation comprising Maqsood Ali Quadri, Hafiz Aabid, Prof. K M Jamauddin former Chairman Kerala Muslim Welfare Association etc, had also earlier submitted a memorandum to the Delhi Home Minister Ramachandran. Home Minister had assured of talking to the PM and HM of India.

Baloch separatist movement not fuelled by India: US

May 27, 2011

The separatist movement in Pakistan’s Balochistan province is fuelled by the country’s domestic policies and not India, a top US official said on Thursday.

“I don’t think that the existence of a terrorist or a separatist movement in Balochistan is fuelled by Indian financing or anything like that,” US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Robert Blake said.

“I think it’s fuelled by domestic issues that are internal to Pakistan,” Blake said in his interaction with Defence Writers Group here.

Pakistan has repeatedly accused India of supporting the rebels in Balochistan in order to destabilise the country. India, however, has categorically denied the allegations.

Hillary presses Pakistan for more to quash militancy

May 27, 2011

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton began an awkward, unsmiling meeting with Pakistan's leaders on Friday as Washington pressed its ally to fully grasp the need to quash Islamist militancy amid tense ties over the killing of Osama bin Laden.

Clinton and Chairman of U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen met President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani as well as Army chief General Ashfaq Kayani in the highest profile visit since U.S. Navy SEALS killed the al Qaeda leader.
