36 dead as Taliban attack Afghan road company

The Taliban attacked an Afghan road construction company early Thursday, triggering an hours-long firefight that killed 36 people and wounded another 20 in the worst single attack for months.
The attack happened in the eastern province of Paktia, which borders Pakistan, at around 2:00am (2130 GMT Wednesday) and lasted for several hours, a provincial spokesman said.
It is thought to be the highest single death toll in a Taliban attack since the militant Islamists struck at a bank in Jalalabad, also in the east, in February, killing 38 people including police collecting their salaries.
‘A large group of Taliban attacked a road construction company in Paktia province,’ said Paktia provincial spokesman Rohullah Samoon.
‘Thirty-five guards and staff of the company were killed and 20 were injured. There were casualties on the Taliban side as well.’ Samoon added that eight Taliban were killed.
The director of the Afghan company targeted, Galaxy Sky, said that the death toll was in fact 36 and included a Pakistani national.
‘They (the Taliban) destroyed a lot of our equipment including vehicles and equipment used for road construction,’ Noorullah Bidar said. ‘We don’t know why they attacked us... they are doing this to prevent reconstruction in Afghanistan.’
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the movement carried out the attack, killing 40 people and torching four vehicles. He did not mention any Taliban casualties.
The militants have made Afghan government projects a prime target in a bid to undermine the authority of president Hamid Karzai’s administration and have repeatedly kidnapped foreign road construction workers from camps in the past.
Afghan, foreign troops kill 60 insurgents: NATO
A three-day offensive by Afghan and foreign forces has killed at least 60 insurgents in a relatively peaceful northwestern Afghan province, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force said, reports Reuters.
The operation against the insurgents — which produced one of the highest militant casualty tolls in recent months — started on May 13 in the Qiasar district of the remote Faryab province, ISAF said in a statement.
‘(Combined forces) killed more than 60 insurgents during clearing operations ... The combined force cleared the area around Ghuchghar village after receiving reports of insurgent activity,’ the force said on late Wednesday.

Bomb attacks on Iraq police kill 27

A spate of bomb attacks against the police in the disputed northern oil-rich city of Kirkuk on Thursday killed at least 27 people, the worst violence to hit Iraq in nearly two months.
A further 89 people were wounded in the three attacks, with months to go before US forces, who participate in confidence-building tripartite patrols and checkpoints with central government forces and Kurdish security officers in Kirkuk and across north Iraq, must withdraw from the country.
Three explosions — two car bombs and a magnetic ‘sticky bomb’ attached to a car — occurred around one hour apart in the oil-rich ethnically-mixed city, security officials said.
The first of the blasts took place at 9:20am (0620 GMT) when the ‘sticky bomb’ exploded in the parking lot of the city’s police headquarters, Major Salam Zangan said.
When police and emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly afterwards, a car bomb detonated.
‘I ran out from the headquarters after I heard the first bomb — I went with my colleague to check the parking lot but as we arrived, a huge bomb went off,’ said Sherzad Kamil, a policeman who suffered wounds to his abdomen and face.
‘I fell on the ground and saw several of my colleagues killed and wounded,’ he said, speaking from Kirkuk general hospital, adding that he saw colleagues whose bodies caught fire as a result of the second blast.
Kirkuk provincial health director Sadiq Omar Rasul said 27 people were killed and 89 others wounded as a result of the three explosions, with the majority of the casualties being policemen.

CBI withdraws ' 50 most wanted' list from website, says document being reviewed

NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday admitted to goofing up on its 'most wanted' list, that was to be handed over to Pakistan, and has now withdrawn the list from its website.
The investigating agency has also removed the Red Corner Notice linked to the list for the time being.
"The entire list is being reviewed. We have no plan to recall the list from Pakistan," Secretary, Internal Security in the Home Ministry, U K Bansal, told reporters.
While referring to the CBI's action to suspend and transfer some officials responsible for the goof up, he said responsibility has been fixed and action has been taken.
Bansal also said the home ministry would conduct an exercise to ensure that there is no such mistake in the future.
Earlier, CBI Director A P Singh has ordered a complete review of the Interpol wing and the most wanted list would be thoroughly scrutinised in consultation with state police and other agencies.
Feroz Rashid Khan named in India's most wanted list of terrorists allegedly hiding in Pakistan was found to be in Arthur Road Jail facing trial in the 1993 serial blasts case. Listed in the dossier as the criminal No 24 - Feroz - was shown as a wanted accused in the blasts case along with the absconding mafia don Dawood Ibrahim.
Earlier, the case of Wazhul Kamar Khan being in the list had also left the government red faced. Khan, who was arrested last year for his alleged role in the 2003 Mulund train blasts, lives in Mumbai suburb Thane's Waghle Estate with his mother, wife and children, after being let off on bail.

Blast in Pakistan targets US consulate cars

PESHAWAR: A car bomb in Peshawar on Friday targeted a US consulate convoy but caused no American deaths or serious injuries, said US embassy spokesman Alberto Rodriguez.
One passerby was killed and 10 Pakistanis were wounded, said a hospital official. One American was slightly wounded in the attack in the blast.
The two consulate vehicles were heading to the consulate when one of the vehicles was hit by the blast.
The attack took place on a main road in the northwestern city. The car used in the attack was parked on a road when the bomb exploded, forcing the consulate vehicle to slam into an electricity pole, said the police official.
"There was an attack on a two-car convoy from the consulate in Peshawar. One car was hit. We are still investigating what actually happened," said Rodriguez. (Reuters)

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama for the first time publicly called on Thursday for the creation of a non-militarised Palestinian state on the basis of Israel`s borders before 1967.
“The United States believes that negotiations should result in two states, with permanent Palestinian borders with Israel, Jordan and Egypt, and permanent Israeli borders with Palestine,” said the US president while emphasising the need for talks to settle the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama, in a major Mideast policy speech Thursday, said the political changes in the Middle East and North Africa mark a "new chapter" in American diplomacy, and that the future of the US is bound to the Middle East and North Africa by the forces of economics, security, history and fate. He also called on the Israelis to withdraw to pre-1967 borders.
He made the comments at the State Department in the speech meant as his first comprehensive response to revolts sweeping the Arab world. It was aimed at audiences in the US and the Middle East and North Africa, where the State Department provided simultaneous translation in Arabic, Farsi and Hebrew.
Obama made outreach to the Islamic world a signature of his presidency when he delivered his first presidential speech in Cairo in 2009 to Muslims around the world. Since then, some observers believe he failed to deliver on the hope he created following his discourse. Thursday's speech was meant to assuage that disappointment.

RIYADH/DAMMAM: Saudis dismissed US President Barrack Obama's much-anticipated "Arab Spring address" as meaningless, predictable drivel while Egyptians and other Arabs, to whom Obama offered some sops, also did not find anything new in the speech, which according to them focused on US interests.
"He did not say anything of consequence," said Riyadh-based historian Hatoon Al-Fassi. "It was a long speech and what I remember the most is his defense of Israel. Till he uttered this sentence, 'US commitment to Israel's security is unshakable', I had some hope, but when he said that I lost all interest. All his words after and before just rang hollow."
Al-Fassi said people in the Arab world had high hopes after his speech in Cairo two years ago, "but when it came to action he turned out to be a hypocrite like all previous American presidents. So I did not have any expectations anyway. His words did not move me because they were all couched in diplomacy and hypocrisy, and nothing more."

Yemen rivals to sign deal to end crisis

SANAA: Yemen’s political rivals have agreed to sign a Gulf-brokered plan on Wednesday to end the country’s bloody political crisis.
When asked if the agreement would be signed on Wednesday, President Ali Abdullah Saleh’s aide Ahmed al-Sufi said: “Yes, it will be today.” There has been “positive” and “important progress.”
