Hundreds hold rival rallies over mosque in Sweden

GOTEBORG: Hundreds of proponents and opponents held rallies in Sweden’s second-largest city Goteborg on Saturday to voice their opinions over the building of a mosque there.
Heavy police presence kept the two groups appart and a spokesman for the force said only one person had been arrested for violent behavior toward an officer.
It was the biggest police effort in the city since the EU Summit in 2001, when several thousand people gathered to protest against US President George W. Bush, the EU and globalization.
Mosque opponents claim the construction will ruin a nearby park and that the area is not suitable, while supporters say the opposition is racist.
The mosque, which will be the city’s second, is due to be completed in mid-June.

"I guess on Sunday when the #Rapture people feel really upset, we can't console them by saying 'Cheer up, it's not the end of the world.'"
Christian doomsday prophet Harold Camping looks likely to be less than rapturous after his prediction that the world would end on Saturday failed to materialize.
The 89-year-old Californian preacher had prophesied that the Rapture would begin at 6pm in each of the world's time zones, with those "saved" by Jesus ascending to heaven and the non-believers being wiped out by an earthquake rolling from city to city across the planet.
But as the deadline for the Apocalypse passed in the Pacific islands, New Zealand and Australia, it became apparent that Camping's prediction of the end of the world was to end not with a bang but with a whimper.
Only on Twitter did the supposed Armageddon sweep the world, with users expressing their mock disappointment at the lack of dead people rising from their graves.
New Zealander Daniel Boerman tweeted: "I'm from New Zealand, it is 6:06PM, the world has NOT ended. No earthquakes here, all waiting for the rapture can relax for now. #Rapture"
In Australia, Jon Gall of Melbourne was unimpressed by the lack of fire and brimstone. He tweeted: "#Rapture time here in Melbourne. A rather quiet sort of rapture if you ask me.
"Well we have had the #Rapture going for 50 minutes now. So far it hasn't interrupted my fish & chips and glass of stout."
In Brisbane, KillaJeules, was similarly disappointed by the lack of a Hollywood blockbuster ending: "So it's 6:37pm here in Brisbane, Australia. No earthquakes. No beaming up of Christians. No zombie apocalypse. No surprises haha."
Camping, a retired civil engineer, has built a multimillion-dollar, non-profit ministry based on his apocalyptic predictions. He previously predicted that the world would end in 1994. It is difficult to know how many of his followers took his latest prophecy seriously, though his Family Radio Worldwide reaches millions of listeners in the US and around the world.
Some have reportedly sold all their possessions and taken to the streets to warn people to prepare for the second coming of Jesus. In recent weeks, callers to Christian radio stations in the US have debated what to do about non-believing friends and neighbors who will be left behind to endure the wrath of God.
But it looks like it will be atheists and other skeptics celebrating this weekend, with tongue-in-cheek doomsday parties planned across the US.
TV scientist Professor Brian Cox summed up the mood of the non-believers. He tweeted: "I think we should all pretend the #rapture is happening so that when Harold Camping gets left behind later today he'll be livid."
But Kieran Healy had a slightly more comforting message for those disappointed at not joining Jesus: "I guess on Sunday when the #Rapture people feel really upset, we can't console them by saying 'Cheer up, it's not the end of the world.'"

Contrary to Israel’s official response, the majority of the Israeli commentators hail US president Barak Obama’s most recent speech on Palestine-Israel, describing it as a “tremendous” achievement for Israel and the right wing in particular.
In a meeting on Friday night in the White House, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu rejected Obama’s vision for Middle East peace, especially regarding establishing a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders.
"Peace based on illusions will crash eventually on the rocks of Middle East reality," Netanyahu told Obama in the Oval Office.
However, Sefer Plotsker, a senior commentator in Israel’s Yediot Ahronot newspaper said that none of the former US presidents embraced Tel Aviv’s demand to pressure the Palestinians to recognise Israel as a Jewish state, which means implicitly giving up the right of return for the refugees.
In an article entitled Lover of Israel Plotsker noted that Obama's argument about the exchange of land implies Washington’s willingness that Israel would annex settlement blocs in the West Bank in any future settlement. For his part, said author and commentator Gideon Levy, Obama has verily accomplished Netanyahu’s mission, stressing that this meeting exposed Obama’s favouritism of Israel.
In another article published in Haaretz Levy said that Obama has devastated Palestinians’ sole achievement, i.e., the plan to go to the United Nations for international recognition of the state under the expectation that Europe to follow Obama’s lead.
He considered that this is an enough reason for the right-wing government in Israel to breathe a sigh of relief.
Levy condemned Obama’s adoption to the Israeli stance of delaying negotiations on the future of Jerusalem and the refugees, stressing that Obama is keen on Israel’s security, yet showed neither interest nor concern about the security of the Palestinians.
Levy stressed that Obama's speech represents a huge list of achievements for Israel, all the while excluding the Palestinians from the list of the oppressed nations. He urged to work on freeing Palestine via democratisation.

Obama must press Israel on 1967 borders: Abbas

Palestinian leaders Friday pressured US President Barack Obama to insist that Israel must accept a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders as Key global players backed US call for a Palestinian state including land lost in the 1967 war.
Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas reacted angrily after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu bluntly told Obama in White House talks that Israel could not return to the "indefensible" 1967 territorial lines.
"Netanyahu's position is an official rejection of Obama's initiative, of international legitimacy and of international law," Palestinian spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina said.
"We call on President Obama and the Mideast Quartet to pressure Netanyahu to accept the 1967 borders," he said.
The diplomatic Quartet on the Middle East, which includes the European Union, the United Nations, the United States and Russia, expressed "strong support" for Obama's statement that a Palestinian state should include land that Israel has occupied since the 1967 war.
European nations in particular have sought to relaunch the peace process using the Quartet, which set out a roadmap to peace under a land-for-security deal.
Israel would have to give up territory, while all Palestinian factions, notably the Hamas rulers in Gaza, would have to recognize Israel's right to exist and end violence.
EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton "warmly welcomes President Obama's confirmation that the borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines," a spokeswoman said.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Obama's speech was "a very important message for the Middle East peace process" and the proposal "a good path that both sides should consider".
In London, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said he supported Obama's "clear message that the borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps."
In the Arab world, Jordan hailed the American president who it said "for the first time clearly spoke of his vision for the establishment of a Palestinian state based on 1967 borders and which must enjoy autonomy."
Lebanese prime minister-designate Najib Mikati said Obama's speech made no mention of Palestinian refugees' right to return -- a key concern for his country which is estimated to host up to 400,000 Palestinian refugees.
Syria's official SANA news agency said Obama's speech offered nothing new but "reaffirmed the deep-rooted and unwavering support for Israel's security."
Alone in outright condemnation, Iran slammed Obama's statement as a sign of "despair.

Syrian troops 'kill five mourners at funeral'

Syrian security forces have killed at least five people and wounded at least 12 when they fired live rounds into a funeral crowd in Homs, activists said.
The funeral, for protesters killed on Friday, was taking place at the city's Nasr cemetery.
Witnesses reported that the shooting began as mourners were leaving the cemetery.
Security forces shot dead at least 44 people on Friday as mass protests swept the country after prayers.

Six dead in suicide blast in Kabul hospital

ISLAMABAD: At least 15 people were killed in an oil tanker blaze triggered by a bomb blast in the Landi Kotal town of the Khyber tribal agency on Saturday. In a related incident over the past 24 hours, a dozen vehicles ferrying goods and oil to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan were burnt after a bomb exploded in one of the tankers near the Torkham checkpost.

TEHRAN: Iran’s Intelligence Ministry claimed Saturday that it has arrested at least 30 people allegedly linked to a CIA-run spy network in accusations that also could spill over into the country’s deepening political power struggles.
The announcement on the alleged spy ring gave no further details and appear part of Iran’s frequent claims of Western and Israel interference. So serious did the American officials take the threat that the FBI and the department of homeland security has issued a warning to local police authorities across the country about an Qaida threat of targeting oil and natural gas assets including tankers.
The US officials came across the al-Qaida plot to blow up tankers while sifting through documents found in the Abbottabad.

Pakistan says wants China to build naval base

WASHINGTON: The United States expects its allies to go after Al Qaeda leaders if they are located within their territories and if they do not, the Americans will get them, says US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Also on Friday, the US media reported that the Obama administration had revived its covert drone campaign against Al Qaeda and the Taliban in Pakistan’s tribal areas after several months of slow activity.
In an interview to CBS News, Secretary Clinton said she agreed with US Defence Secretary Robert Gates that top Pakistani leaders were unaware of Osama bin Laden’s whereabouts.
“Would you recommend additional unilateral raids if you knew the whereabouts of other key Al Qaeda figures in Pakistan?” she was asked.

Mubarak depressed, needs therapy

CAIRO: Egypt's ousted leader Hosni Mubarak, who is under arrest in a hospital room, is depressed and needs treatment by a psychologist, Egyptian news agency reported on Saturday.
The 83-year-old former president has been in hospital since April after he reportedly suffered a heart attack during interrogation. He is accused of involvement in corruption and the deaths of anti-regime protesters.
