Arabs Pay Price for Holocaust: Tutu Cairo — Feeling the guilt over the Holocaust during World War II, the West is turning a blind eye to Israel's crimes against the Palestinians and Arabs, leaving them to pay the price of the Holocaust, Nobel peace laureate Desmond Tutu said.
"Who pays the penance?" Tutu, a South African Archbishop, told Haaretz on Friday, August 28. "The penance is being paid by the Arabs, by the Palestinians." The Holocaust refers to "systematic state-sponsored killing of Jewish men, women, and children and others by Nazi Germany and its collaborators during World War II." The commonly used figure for the number of Jewish victims is six million.
But the figure has been questioned by many European historians and intellectuals, chiefly French author Roger Garaudy. "I once met a German ambassador who said Germany is guilty of two wrongs. One was what they did to the Jews. And now the suffering of the Palestinians," Tutu said. Israeli troops killed more than 1,400 Palestinians, mostly civilians, and wounded thousands in 22 days of deadly attacks in Gaza in January.
Israel also tightened a crippling siege on the strip, home to 1.6 million Palestinians, since Hamas was voted to power in 2006, badly affecting the livelihood in the enclave. No Security The Nobel peace laureate said that the Israeli onslaughts, fences and restrictions will not bring it security and peace. "The lesson that Israel must learn from the Holocaust is that it can never get security through fences, walls and guns," he said, citing the situation in the apartheid South Africa. "In South Africa, they tried to get security from the barrel of a gun. They never got it," he said. "They got security when the human rights of all were recognized and respected." Right-wing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday that the lesson Israel learnt from the Holocaust is that it should always defend itself.
Tutu criticized the Israeli barrier, which sneaks deep into Palestinian lands, saying it is worse than the apartheid regime in South Africa. "We used to take our children in Swaziland and had to go through border checkpoints in South Africa and face almost the same conduct, where you're at the mercy of a police officer," he said. "They can decide when they're going to process you and they can turn you back for something inconsequential.
"But on the other hand, we didn't have collective punishment. We didn't have the demolition of homes because of the suspicion that one of the members of the household might or might not be a terrorist." The steel and concrete wall is snaking some 900 kilometers along the occupied West Bank, leaving larger swathes of it on the Israeli side and depriving Palestinians of their livelihoods. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has issued a landmark ruling branding the wall as illegal and asking Israel to compensate affected Palestinians.
Sanctions The Nobel peace winner backed calls for slapping sanctions on Israel over its practices against the Palestinians.
"I always say to people that sanctions were important in the South African case for several reasons," he said. "We had a sports boycott, and since we are a sports-mad country, it hit ordinary people. It was one of the most psychologically powerful instruments. "Secondly, it actually did hit the pocket of the South African government. I mean, when we had the arms embargo and the economic boycott."
Ben-Gurion University professor Neve Gordon has earlier called for slapping sanctions on Israel over its practices in the occupied lands.
Tutu said imposing sanctions would force Israel to return to the negotiating table. "Another important reason was that it gave hope to our people that the world cared. You know," he said. "That this was a form of identification." ------ Islamists on conversion campaign VR Jayaraj | Kochi August 29, 2009 Islamists in Kerala have launched an organised campaign for converting girls belonging to other religions into Islam. Police believe that Islamist organisation NDF (presently Popular Front of India) and its student outfit Campus Front could be behind this campus-based campaign. An investigation is presently on into the matter on the instructions of the Kerala High Court. Information about this planned campaign came out in the open after two girls in an MBA college in Pathanam-thitta, who had gone missing some days ago, were produced in the HC on a habeas corpus petition. Girls told the court that they were taken to a place in Kozhikode, where a group led by Campus Front activists Shehenshah and Sirajuddeen forced them to convert into Islam and sign marriage contracts. Lawyer Muhammad Ansari, who appeared in the court for the Government, said there was a planned effort behind the forced conversion of the girls into Islam. In a petition, Jacob Thomas of Pallikkal, Kottarakkara, Kollam and K Madhavan of Peroorkada, Thiruvananth-apruam, parents of the girls, had alleged that their daughters were detained by one Shehansha of Pettah, Pathana-mthitta. Girls were doing a project after completing MBA. The girls had left their homes informing the parents that they were going to convert into Islam. However, when they were produced in the court on the habeas corpus petition, they said that they were forced to convert into Islam in a deserted house at West Chelari, Kozhikode district where they were taken. Though the court sent the girls with their parents, it ruled that they could be taken to their homes but no restriction should be placed on their food and prayer. According to Gopakumar, assistant commissioner of police, Cantonment, Thiruva-nanthapuram, who is in charge of the investigation into the campaign of the extremists to convert girls into Islam, as many as 940 girls had gone missing in Kerala in the past five years. He said the truth behind these cases could be brought only after probe. In those circles, ISNA presents an open and progressive face of Islam that is led by a woman, Ingrid Mattson. Literature available at ISNA's annual convention in Washington, however, offers a far different vision. Books and pamphlets obtained by the Investigative Project on Terrorism from ISNA's July national convention feature numerous attempts to portray U.S. prosecution of terrorists and terror supporters as anti-Muslim bigotry; dramatic revisionist history that denied attacks by Arab nations and Palestinian terrorists against Israel; anti-Semitic tracts and hyperbolic rants about a genocide and holocaust of Palestinians. Previously, the IPT exposed hate speech during a conference panel that featured a call for "more jihad" along with slurs against Jews and gays and a defense of the terrorist group Hezbollah as an innocent player subject to incessant Israeli onslaught. ISNA made no comment about pro-Hezbollah comments by author Cathy Sultan, who said she could "see no reason why Hezbollah should not remain armed." It feigned ignorance about invited speaker Warith Deen Umar's radicalism and bigotry, even though his book was available at the convention and is excerpted on Umar's own Web site. ISNA's pre-convention vendor statement demanded that all literature at its bazaar "must be pre-approved in writing by ISNA, in ISNA's sole and absolute discretion. Book selling vendors must complete enclosed form providing inventory of the literature to be sold at ISNA." Among the works that met approval from "ISNA's sole and absolute discretion" were: # "The Palestinians' Holocaust: American Perspectives" by Mauri' Saalakhan. The book is a collection of essays, including some by Saalakhan, which include comparisons between Nazi concentration camps and Gaza; claims that the genocide in Darfur is both exaggerated and a product of Israeli provocation and that the "Jewish-Zionist lobby" in America is so pervasive, it even controls Keith Ellison, D-Minn, the first Muslim elected to Congress. The postponement was initially until the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. However reports suggest that the sentence is being revised by the Shariah Court of Appeal in the Malaysian State of Pahang. Welcoming the temporary reprieve, Amnesty International called on the Malaysian government to stop using the penalty of caning altogether. "This case highlights the epidemic of caning and flogging going on in Malaysia," said Sam Zarifi, Amnesty International's Asia-Pacific director. "Since 2002, more than 35,000 people have been caned or flogged, most of them irregular migrants." Kartika Sari Devvi Shukarno was to be remanded at the Kajang women's prison in the state of Pahang from Monday, where she was to be caned within seven days. According to media reports, she was being driven from her father's house to the prison, when the van she was in turned around and brought her back. Authorities in Pahang said on Monday that the delay would run until the month of fasting ends. Monday was the third day of Ramadan. Kartika Sari Devvi Shukarno, 32, was sentenced to six strokes of the cane for drinking beer in a hotel bar in December 2007. She was also fined RM5,000 (approximately US$ 1,400) by a court administering Islamic Shariah law in the state of Pahang after she pleaded guilty to the offence. Dr Nazir-Ali, who will leave next week a few days after his 60th birthday, says that he has paid a heavy price for standing up for Christian values and has been stung by criticism of some of his controversial statements — but that he has no regrets. The mission and reputation of the Anglican Church in the Islamic world had been seriously damaged by rows over the ordination of gay priests and bishops and the blessing of same-sex partnerships, he said in an interview with The Times. "Every time you say something that the Bible teaches or you think is God's purpose for people, you have to take what comes by way of reaction," he said. "As I say, it is not easy being a Christian in the world. You have to be prepared for that." In January 2008 Dr Nazir-Ali wrote that Islamic extremism had turned "already separate communities into no-go areas". Earlier this year, on the day the Gay Pride march was held in London, he said homosexuals were among those who should "repent" and be transformed when they fall short of "God's will". An evangelical Catholic whose father was a convert from Islam, he had to leave his birth country of Pakistan in 1986 after receiving death threats for standing up for non-Muslims and for women. Dalia Mogahed: The United States must first seek to understand the problems at the heart of the relationship. Muslims were further alienated because they believed the United States disrespected Islam and wished to dominate and exploit the region. They should come forth with constructive solutions to global problems as engaged global citizens. Q: Islamophobia remains the main problem of the Muslim world and America. Do you think this problem needs a political solution with participation of the US and Muslim governments? A: I think that Islamophobia, or any other prejudice, is a problem that requires education, not legislation. Q: The western world asserts that the religious and political split in the Islamic society put obstacle on promotion of dialogue with Muslims. To what extent do you find negativeness of division within the Muslims on understanding Islam in the West? A: I think it would be unrealistic to expect 1.5 billion people [Muslims] to agree on everything, since we certainly don't expect this of Christians who are split up into hundreds of denominations. Muslims are not one monolithic group. The irony is that when it comes to inter religious dialogue, I think Muslims struggle with the same issue and ask who among the Christians should they be speaking to? The answer in both cases is that each community's rich diversity must be represented for dialogue to be authentic and effective. That said, Muslims should work actively to not allow anyone to exploit Muslim diversity to incite violence and conflict. This is important for Muslims' own progress and prosperity, aside from their relationship with other communities. Q: Azerbaijan is famous for its religious tolerance. Could this be a model for the rapprochement of Islamic and Western societies? A: Azerbaijan is a diverse society with a rich history, and its people are proud of their heritage and identity. As powerful of a model as this is, I believe no one solution will work for everyone and each society will have to shape its solutions to its unique character. Source: http://en.trend.az/news/other/1530595.html ----- Burqa 'ban' rocks Hyderabad college 29 August 2009 HYDERABAD: Trouble erupted in Muslim dominated Mehdipatnam after burqa-clad young girl students held a massive agitation outside Vani College (Junior and Degree) on Friday morning after the college principal, Y Annapurna, allegedly asked students not to wear burqa to class and shut the college gates on them. The agitation soon degenerated into a stone pelting session with male students from neighbouring colleges and parents of the girls joining in. The situation came under control only after the police - called in by the college management - resorted to a lathi charge. The agitation came a day after a dharna by the students on Thursday protesting against what was termed by them as "the failure of the college management to react to the abduction of a girl student" from the institution earlier this week. The college management had looked the other way as they perceived that the girl had eloped with her boyfriend. In the event, the girl had returned by evening. On Friday morning, the students charged that the principal had been berating them for wearing burqa for over a week saying that it did not comply with the uniform (salwar kameez) worn by other students. But the immediate trigger for the Friday trouble was the refusal of the principal to allow entry to late coming students, which soon degenerated into an argument about burqa, the month of Ramzaan and other matters like 'promiscuity' of girls. The tape released by Ayman al-Zawahiri is the second this month and comes after Pakistani Taliban Chief Baitullah Mehsud was killed in a suspected US missile strike on 5 August. It also follows an offensive begun by the Pakistani army in late April against an insurgency by the Taliban in the volatile Swat valley after the militants took over the district 120 km from Islamabad. "The war in the tribal areas and Swat is an integral part of the crusade against Muslims across the world," Zawahri said in the tape produced by the production house, Al-Sahab, and posted on an Al-Qaeda-linked website. In the 22-minute video address entitled "Path of Doom" he reiterates comments made in July calling for Pakistanis to wage war against the American "crusaders" and the Pakistani army. Faith Sapp wore a shirt to class Monday with the words 'Islam Is Of The Devil' printed on it. The words are the same of those at an outreach center where her father serves as the pastor." I find it very offensive when parents use their young children as props in political demonstrations, I don't care if it's an anti-abortion rally or an anti-war march. A 10-year-old girl doesn't know enough about Islam to offer criticism of the religion. Her pastor father should be ashamed of himself for subjecting his daughter to ridicule or even violence. I know enough about Islam and fundamentalist Christianity to know that they are both "of the devil." Children should be seen and not heard, especially when it comes to religion and politics. Parents shouldn't indoctrinate their children into any religion, they should let their kids choose their own religion (or atheism) when they are old enough to know better. It's nothing short of brainwashing when parents force their religion on their offspring. The school was right in sending the child home, her T-shirt is offensive and disruptive in a classroom setting. The man was detained on his way to a training camp in the Afghan-Pakistani border area and it's unclear how he intended to support the Islamic Jihad Union, the newspaper said today. He allegedly was recruited by the "Sauerland cell," named after the western German region where members were arrested in 2007. The attack killed 22 Pakistani border guards as they prepared to break fast for the Ramadan meal. Tariq Azam, the new spokesman for Hakeemullah Mehsud and the Pakistani Taliban, said the attack was aimed at the US and was a response to the assassination of former leader Baitullah Mehsud, who was killed after an Aug. 5 airstrike in South Waziristan. "We claim responsibility for the blast," Tariq told AFP. "This is our first response since the death of our chief Baitullah Mehsud," Tariq continued. "We will continue similar attacks in the future also." The Taliban conducted the attack at Torkham because the crossing is used by the US to move supplies into Afghanistan. "The victims of the suicide attack were all those supporting the United States," Tariq said. "Anybody supporting the US is our enemy." Earlier a group called the Abdullah Azzam Brigade took credit for the attack. The Abdullah Azzam Brigade is based in Arakzai, and is one of the units commanded by Hakeemullah Mehsud. The Abdullah Azzam Brigade is named after the influential jihadi ideologue who co-founded al Qaeda along with Osama bin Laden. Its members include Taliban fighters from the Arakzai-based Commander Tariq Group as well as Arabs from the Egyptian Islamic Jihad.
