Man who went to vote loses nose to Taliban LAL MOHAMMAD, a 40- year old Afghan farmer, was one of the millions of people who defied Taliban threats against elections and set out to cast his ballot in the presidential election in August. But he soon regretted his defiance. Fighters ambushed Mohammad as he was walking towards a polling station and cut off part of his nose and ears. The Taliban vowed to disrupt the August 20 vote, threatening reprisals against voters and staging scores of rocket attacks and several bombings across the country on Election Day. The threats and violence failed to stop the elections from taking place, but they do seem to have hurt turnout in some areas, especially the Taliban heartland in the south. Mohammad, speaking haltingly at a hospital in the Afghan capital, Kabul, described how militants stopped and searched him while he was on his way to a polling booth. They beat him with the butt of an assault rifle after they found his voting card. Then they took out a knife. "I saw one reaching my nose with a knife. I asked him to stop, but it was useless," Mohammad said. "I regret very much getting the card and going to vote." Election officials have reported scattered incidents in which militants cut off voters' fingers stained with indelible ink. The ink was meant to prevent multiple voting but it also helped the militants pick out people who had cast their ballots. A Taliban spokesman denied before the election that an order had been given to mutilate voters. Mohammad described how he lay bleeding and unconscious for several hours, coming to his senses only after a man from his village spotted him and put him on the back of a donkey. But with no proper healthcare facility in the remote Dai Kundi province, Mohammad travelled for three days over mountain tracks and dirt roads by donkey and then a car to reach the capital. After answering some questions, the father of eight, apparently exhausted, slumped back onto his hospital bed. Like two- thirds of Afghans, Mohammad cannot read or write. He said he did not even know who was running for office when he went to vote but had been excited by the prospect of casting a ballot to help choose a president. A doctor said Mohammad needed plastic surgery and weeks for his treatment and recovery. Mohammad said he hoped the government would look after his family until he got better. In the meantime, partial results released on Monday showed President Hamid Karzai maintaining a lead over his main rival, former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah, but still without the outright majority needed to avoid a second- round run- off. David Kilcullen is an adviser to US General Stanley McCrystal and says that while Afghan authorities have been flooded with allegations of fraud after last week's presidential election establishing a legitimate leadership will be the most important question facing the Afghanistan operation right now. On Friday, August 28, 2009, at 9:00 AM, two gunmen on motorcycle opened discriminatory firing at Maryiam Labs killing Mushtaq Masih, Naveed John, Naymat Gill, Nadeem Akhtar and Suleman who were in laboratory while 7 other were seriously injured and hospitalized. The sources told PCP that Christians were receiving threats from Islamic militants to convert to Islam or Die letters and calls from months which resulted in killing. During the confrontation, Lawrence ordered the girl to "Take that thing off your head," meaning the girl's traditional hijab. School officials responded by suspending Lawrence for five days, not for her comments about standing for the pledge of allegiance, but for her other comments, which school Principal Susan Duval called atrocious. Duval said: These students should feel safe and secure here. We may have differences of opinion, but no student should have to tolerate harassment. Ramzy Kiliç of the Tampa chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations sees both sides of the issue. He thinks the Muslim student should have stood for the pledge of allegiance, but was also dismayed to hear reports of what Lawrence said, which he agreed were culturally insensitive. He volunteered to speak at the school about Islam if school officials were interested in scheduling an educational night. ------- Young British Muslims angry with police and media Sep 1, 2009 By Peter Griffiths LONDON (Reuters) - Many young British Muslims feel demonised by the police and the media and say they have come under pressure to prove their loyalty since the Sept. 11 attacks and the 2005 London bombings, a study has found. The report for the Policy Research Centre, an Islamic think tank, was intended to give young Muslims their own voice to counter assumptions made by outsiders. It said young Muslims had been portrayed in the media as a threat to society and often struggled to convince people that they can be both British and Muslim at the same time. Public debate over immigration, nationalism and integration has left them feeling under attack, while Britain's role in Iraq and Afghanistan has only increased the pressure. "As well as facing questions and challenges to their loyalty, young Muslims ... are being pressed to define their identity in light of national and international events," the report said. Young Muslims are too often asked to prove that their religion is peaceful and they are law-abiding, the report said. By looking at the age of Malaysia, 52, we expect anak-anak Malaysia to behave more matured between races and religion. We live in a democratic country, allowing her citizen to voice any idea, suggestion or grouse. Even, a right for peace demo and protest permitted in Malaysia constitution but with condition not put national unity and security at stake. However, last Friday protest does not suit to any condition stated above. When asked by reporters on the cow's head, the organizer just reply that it is a symbolic of Malay idioms, "Lembu ditarik hidungnya" which means follow the master without any objection. Frankly, it was a stupid answer from stupid protesters to cover their stupid act. Why you did not pull a live cow instead to SUK building to live up the idioms? What kind of message that you are trying to send to all Malaysians by stepping on cow's head? To make it worst your speech inciting the hatred among religion (even call for bloodshed if the issue is not resolved). All Malaysians know that cow is considered sacred in Hindu. A protest against a Hindu temple and brought a cow's head just automatically send a threat message to Hindu followers as the two are closely related between each other. Only stupid Malaysian will agree with the protester's answer. It was not the first hack attributed to this group of hackers. Students from the Pirchei Aharon Yeshiva who were hoping to get some information about the start of classes this week were surprised to find Hamas cyber-graffiti on their school's website. The hackers, calling themselves "Makkah Boys", uploaded images of masked Hamas terrorists, a ritualistic Israeli flag-burning and the Hamas emblem. In addition, they inserted a picture of IDF soldiers with the caption, "Go to Hell dogs." The English-language text inserted by the hackers was headlined "Allahu Akbar" - "Allah is greatest" - the Islamic rallying cry. After boasting "Hacked by Makkah Boys" the defacement includes the text, "We more dangerous than army" under a picture of three masked jihadists. The picture properties identify them in Arabic as "members of the Al-Kassam Brigades". Mohamed Ali Elomar, Khaled Cheikho, Moustafa Cheikho, Abdul Rakib Hasan and Mohammed Omar Jamal have all pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiring to commit a terrorist act or acts in Australia. They have been in prison since their arrest in November 2005 and their trial has been running for 163 days. There have been more than 300 witnesses and already there is in excess of 8,000 pages of transcripts. On the second day of summing up the case, Justice Anthony Whealy told the jury that it was the Crown case that each of the accused shared extremist views and embraced violent jihad. Explaining the Crown case, the Judge said that the five accused believed that Islam throughout the world was under attack, particularly from the United States and its allies, and that, "they were obliged to respond to the situation by preparing for violent jihad." Full Report at: http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/09/01/2673346.htm ------ Benazir had asked Pak air force to be ready to strike India's N- sites PTI: SLAIN former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto had directed the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) to be ready to attack India's nuclear facilities in case Pakistan's atomic installations were targeted in 1990, former Pakistan army chief General Mirza Aslam Beg has said. Bhutto, issued the directive to PAF after reports surfaced that the US, Israelis and Indians were allegedly planning to attack Pakistan's nuclear facilities, Beg told a news channel. He did not give further details. Beg also claimed that Saudi Arabia funded late politician Mahmood Haroon to woo political leaders to join the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad ( IJI), formed in 1988 to ensure that Bhutto did not return to power. The money was also meant to fund IJI's election campaign, he added. The former army chief said Haroon had claimed that the money bags were so heavy that his shoulders hurt for days. Beg said Bhutto had posed no threat to national security, thus dismissing reports of his differences with the late premier. Bhutto remained rock solid in 1990 amid reports of a conspiracy against Pakistan, he said. ------ Gilani's decision on PoK irks India By Dipanjan Roy Chaudhury New Delhi: Pak's Northern Areas, which India claims as its own, is given internal autonomy. THE YOUSUF Raza Gilani government has approved the controversial ' Gilgit- Baltistan Empowerment and Self Governance Order 2009', aimed at giving Pakistan's Northern Areas " full internal autonomy" and changing the region's name to Gilgit- Baltistan. The move may trigger tension between India and Pakistan because India considers the Northern Areas part of its territory in Jammu and Kashmir. The Northern Areas (part of Pakistan occupied- Kashmir or PoK), which have been renamed Gilgit- Baltistan, lie to the northwest of the Kargil region of Jammu and Kashmir. Under the order approved on Saturday, Pakistan granted " province- like" status to Gilgit- Baltistan. It was previously a federally administered region under the direct jurisdiction of the president. Islamabad's devolution package for Gilgit- Baltistan region empowers the local assembly to elect its chief minister. The assembly, however, will not have control over defence, treasury and foreign affairs. Pakistan's President will implement the cabinet decision in the form of a presidential order. He is authorised to appoint a governor for the area. PoK is divided into Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Northern Areas. Taking strong exception to Islamabad's decision, India on Monday said it viewed Pakistan's decision with concern as it believed these areas are an integral part of Jammu and Kashmir and India. "The Northern Areas are an integral part of India. We view these developments with concern. We are trying to obtain more details," a senior government source said. Earlier India was peeved with the Pakistan government's approval for the construction of the 4,500- mw Diamer- Bhasha dam in the Northern Areas. Sources said the proposed project would not only be located in an illegally held territory but also posed the danger of causing floods in Jammu and Kashmir. The Gilani government's decision has also been attacked by Opposition PML- N chief Nawaz Sharif who on Monday criticised the regime for not taking into confidence political parties before announcing a new self governance and reforms package for the Northern Areas. ------ 30 Islamic Militants Arrested in Nigeria By Robert Williams Aug. 31 2009 Thirty members of Islamic militants who launched a series of attacks on Nigerian government to impose Islamic 'Sharia' law all over the country including on the Christians have been captured. Nigeria police say the arrests were made in Adamawa State, which is close to north-eastern city of Maiduguri, the epicentre of the attacks; but the police refused to comment further, BBC news reported Friday. Last month, the Islamic militant group - Boko Haram, which translates to "western education is sin," attacked several police stations, leaving more than 700 people dead. During the violence six Churches were destroyed, three pastors were captured and beheaded by the group. The death includes many Christians and terrifying the believers in the country, especially those who live in the northern states where Sharia law are in place. The Boko Haram, also known as the Nigerian Taliban, first launched a series of attacks in Bauchi state against police stations and state facilities in Northern Nigeria. The violence soon spread to three other states: Borno, Yobe and Kano states. Judge Syed Hasan Shah Bukhari of the ATC-I, who conducted the trial, found traffic police constables Bashir Ahmed and Noor Mohammad guilty of kidnapping the girl, Sana, on July 3 when she was playing with her friends near her house in Korangi and subjecting the victim to a sexual assault before killing her. The court imposed a fine of Rs100,000 each, all of which would be paid to the parents of the deceased girl as compensation. In case of non-payment of fine, the convicts would have to undergo an additional three-year imprisonment. The judge also sentenced both the convicts to ten years in prison under Section 376 (punishment for rape) of the Pakistan Penal Code and directed them to pay fines of Rs10,000 each. In case of default, they would spend an additional year in jail. According to the verdict, the prosecution witnesses and complainant established the prosecution's case and the accused did not present a plausible defence. No defence evidence was presented which could have led to the accused's substantive defence. Furthermore, no defence witnesses were produced and neither was any cogent point raised while rebutting the prosecution's evidence. ------- Libya to mark Gaddafi anniversary An aerial acrobatic team are seen flying above Tripoli, Libya, Aug 31 A military parade will kick off a week of celebrations on Tuesday Libya is beginning a week of celebrations to mark 40 years since the coup that brought Colonel Muammar Gaddafi to power. Many African leaders are already in Libya for an African Union summit that was held on Monday. They will attend a big military parade and festivities to mark the occasion. But most Western leaders are staying away, amid a political storm over the release and return to Libya of the only man jailed for the Lockerbie bombing. Scottish authorities freed Abdel Ali Mohammed al-Megrahi on 20 August after he had served eight years of a life sentence for the 1988 bombing of Pan Am flight 103, in which 270 people died. His subsequent hero's welcome in Tripoli generated anger in the US and UK. The British government has also been forced to deny reports that his release was linked to an oil deal. As Libya marks its anniversary, British authorities say they will publish all correspondence with Scottish ministers over his release. She spent Rs 500,000 on just the construction. Sunlight streamed into every room. It was not in a dark alley, but right on the corner of a street. The women she waxed helped her put the money together to make her home. Shehnaz and her three children were happiest when living there. That is, until her husband sold the house. Where did the money go? Shehnaz was never told but she has a sense. Her husband likes to gamble. When he gambles, he likes to drink. And when he loses, he gets drunk. When he loses and gets drunk, he beats her. According to a February 2009 report from the Aurat Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, 7,733 cases of violence against women were cited in the print media in 2008. (That's right – those little Page 3 items add up.) Of these, 472 were cases of honour killings, the vast majority of which were carried out by spouses or family members. Pakistan's Additional Police Surgeon, Dr Zulfiqar Siyal, has announced that 100 women are raped every 24 hours on average in the city of Karachi alone. I'm not sure if these rapes include those committed within a marriage.
