Celebrating the Christian New Year is not permissible in any way for Muslims
... like other communities, many Muslims have also started celebrating the New Year whereas celebrating the New Year is not permissible in any way for the Muslims as Muslims have nothing to do with a new year beginning with January. Undoubtedly, it is associated with some solar or Christian calendar whereas the Islamic calendar is a lunar one with which Islamic way of life is associated. Many of the instructions of Islam are linked to the lunar calendar alone and no instructions are based on the solar or Christian calendar. According to the Islamic calendar, the New Year begins with Muharramul Haram. Eidul Fitr falls on the first day of the month of Shawwal and Eidul Adha falls on the tenth, eleventh and twelfth of the last month of Zul hajja. Growing trend of celebrating the New Year a matter of concern By Maulana Asrarul Haq Qasmi (Translated from Urdu by New Age Islam Edit Desk) According to the solar calendar the month of January is about to begin. That is, there is very little time left in the ushering of the year 2011. On this occasion, a wave of jubilation is seen in different sections of the society. The youth is all the more enthusiastic. Exchanges of greetings cards and messages over the phone are seen everywhere. Preparations for the New Year celebrations are on at various places. Then there are companies who are luring customers with various offers. Such emotions are not seen among the non-Muslims alone but the member of the Muslim society are also enthusiastic about the New Year as they too do not want to miss the opportunity. Why so much jubilation on the beginning of the New Year with the month of January? Why is there such madness in celebrating the new year? Is this way appropriate for the people of this country? Does the New Year has anything to do with the Muslims? Is it wise for him to indulge in mad celebrations of the New Year without introspecting about and taking lessons from his past at a time when the entire humanity is passing through a painful phase? These are important questions that he should ponder over. The first point is that the celebrations of the New Year are a negation of the human wisdom as every moment is new and precious for the human being. If man ponders over the moments of his life he will be grateful to God because life and death is in his hands. No one can live even for a second without his will. Again, the moment, the day, the month and the year that passes away becomes a part of the past and never comes back in life. The man should be sad about the passing away of a part of his life that a part of his life was lost. He should also think about what he did in the time that passed. What did he get and what did he lose? Did the precious moments, days and months passed away in vain? Did he persecute anybody in those days? Did he deprive someone of his rights? Did he inflict pain to someone? Did he disobey his Creator? Did he put the objective he was sent in the world with on the backburner? Obviously, if they think from this angle, most of them will be ashamed of themselves and will be sad over their doings because many of them might have wasted the time satiating their physical desires; many of them might have committed heinous crimes and many of them might have spent the time uselessly. If they ponder, they will realise that they spent not a couple of days, not a couple of weeks, not a couple of months but a whole year which a considerable span of time in this way. Last year from January to December, they lay in deep slumber and suddenly woke up to the realisation that the sun of the New Year’s morning was about to rise. The realisation of the waste of time will surely put the lines of worry on their foreheads and make them cry for hours. At that moment, there will not be the sights of the new year before their eyes but the painful sights of the year gone by will haunt their memory. It is natural that in such a situation, who will think of celebrating the New Year? Of dancing and partying? Of merry making? It is also a matter of grave concern that the methods adopted for celebrating the New Year are very harmful for the society. They are casting harmful effects on the youth. Vulgarity and licentiousness is on the rise. According to reports, the programmes of dance and songs are organised on the occasion and the youth participate in them in large numbers. The guardians of the society should take effective steps to contain the flood of vulgarity and try to save the new generation from going haywire. The modern civilisation has provided many resources for misguiding the new generation. The steps to save the new generations should be taken seriously. Be it the new year’s day or the Valentine’s Day, April Fool’s Day or someone’s birth day, some practices have crept into our society that do not conform to the values and ethics of the Indian society. If we discuss the New Year’s celebrations in the context of the Muslims, we should admit that, like other communities, many Muslims have also started celebrating the New Year whereas celebrating the New Year is not permissible in any way for the Muslims as Muslims have nothing to do with a new year beginning with January. Undoubtedly, it is associated with some solar or Christian calendar whereas the Islamic calendar is a lunar one with which Islamic way of life is associated. To recognise the beginning of the new year from the month of January means ignoring the the system of lunar calendar and leading the life according to the solar or Christian calendar which have harms for the Muslim community. The first and the basic harm is that the Muslims will fall apart from the Islamic system of life. They will arrange their schedules of nikahs, ceremonies and meetings even their day to day chores according to the English months. It means they will get closer to the western lifestyle which will have a negative impact in future. Not only that, by forgetting the Islamic or lunar months they will miss some important days that God has declared more important than the others like the Shab-e-Qadr among the nights and Yaum-e-Aashura among the days. The way the New Year beginning with January is celebrated, celebrating the year beginning with Muharram is also not permitted. Islam does not allow its followers to get carried away on the occasion of New Year or any happy occasion, to burst crackers, to organise parties of dance and merry making and participate in vulgar programmes. There is also no logic in the exchange of cards. Islam is a simple religion, and likes simplicity. There is no place for vulgarity and immoral practices in Islam. In Islam the best practices are those that are based on worship of God, His obedience and service to mankind. Keeping the Muslim community away from these ill practices is the need of the hour. The guardians of the Muslim society can play an important role in this regard. If the Muslim society is not made aware of the far reaching consequences of the New Year celebrations and left to their fate, then the Muslim society would be plagued by such evils that will ruin it and will have dangerous consequences.
