Islamabad : A group of over 500 Pakistani scholars and clerics have described the policeman who gunned down the Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer as a 'Ghazi' and have warned against any expression of sympathy for slain PPP leader, saying it would tantamount to an act of blasphemy.
Warning the people not to lead or offer funeral prayers for Taseer, 66, the clerics part of Jamaat-e-Ahl-e -Sunnat Pakistan, a grouping representing the moderate Barelvi sect of Sunni Muslims praised the Elite Force policeman Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri and called him a 'Ghazi', an Islamic warrior.
The outsopken Taseer who was known for his liberal views and who supported changes in the controversial blasphemy law, was gunned down in a posh market in the heart of Islamabad on Tuesday.
The clerics said in a statement issued last night, "Also, there should be no expression of grief or sympathy on the death of the Governor, as those who support blasphemy of the Prophet Mohammed are themselves indulging in blasphemy."
Patting Malik, the clerics said he had killed Taseer for calling the blasphemy law a "black law".
Hailing the "courage" and zeal of Qadri, the clerics and scholars said his action had made all Muslims proud.
A leader of the ruling Pakistan People's Party's 'ulema' or clerics wing led Taseer's funeral prayer this afternoon after several leading clerics of Lahore, including the imams of the Data Darbar shrine and the Shahi Masjid, refused to do so.
The cleric of the mosque at the Governor's House, who is a Barelvi, too refused to lead the prayer, sources said.
The statement issued by the Jamaat-e-Ahl-e-Sunnat Pakistan was endorsed by the grouping's 'ameer' or chief Syed Mazhar Saeed Shah Kazmi and over 500 scholars and clerics like Allama Syed Riaz Hussain Shah, Shah Turab-ul-Haq Qadri and Pir Ghulam Siddiq Naqshbandi.
Those "favouring the person who indulged in blasphemy are themselves blasphemous," the scholars and clerics said in the statement.

Islamabad: Pakistani police on Wednesday charged the policeman who assassinated Punjab governor Salman Taseer with murder and terrorism even as he appeared to be unrepentant for his actions.
Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri,the Elite Force personnel who gunned down Taseer in a market in Islamabad,was booked under the Pakistan Penal Code and the Anti-Terrorism Act.He will be produced in an anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi on Thursday,officials said.
The assassin was brought to the court complex in Islamabad in an armoured vehicle amidst tight security.
The vehicle drove up almost to the entrance of the courtroom and Qadri,his face covered by a black mask,was taken inside by several policemen.
Despite the strict security arrangements,several persons,including lawyers,went up to Qadri as he emerged and congratulated him for his actions.One person placed a garland of roses around Qadris neck while another kissed him.As policemen tried to push Qadri into the vehicle,he resisted and shouted: We are ready to sacrifice our life for the prestige of the Prophet Muhammed. Islamabad : The Pakistani policeman, who gunned down Punjab Governor Salman Taseer, was removed from the Special Branch for being a "security risk" and had told several of his colleagues of his plan to kill the senior PPP leader for opposing the controversial blasphemy law, according to the media here.
Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, 26, who laid down his weapon and surrendered moments after he shot and killed Taseer at the Kohsar Market here yesterday, had also been part of Premier Yousuf Raza Gilani's security detail on at least one occasion, the local media reported.
Qardi, who was shown smiling in photographs and video footage after the assassination, had told several of his colleagues in Punjab Police's Elite Force of his plan to kill the Governor for opposing the blasphemy law, Geo News channel quoted unnamed sources as saying.
He had told his colleagues that if he killed the Governor, he should be arrested alive as he would lay down his weapon after firing.
Qadri, who is from Rawalpindi, also told investigators that he had been removed from the Special Branch for being a "security risk," the channel reported.
Qadri was not on the duty roster of policemen assigned to guard the Governor till Monday night.
His name was included in the roster at his own request yesterday morning, Interior Minister Rehman Malik told the media.
Following these revelations, the joint investigation team probing Taseer's killing arrested two officials, who had assigned Qadri to the Governor's security detail and eight more personnel of the Elite Force, an anti-terrorism unit that guards several VIPs.
Investigators also plan to question the officials who recruited Qadri in the Elite Force.
Qadri joined the Punjab Constabulary in 2003 and was deputed to an Elite Force platoon in 2008.
A police officer told the Dawn newspaper that Qadri had been assigned to Taseer's security detail during the Governor's visits to Islamabad and had once been deployed to guard Prime Minister Gilani.
PPP leaders and the media raised questions about several other aspects of 66-year-old Taseer's killing.
Following reports that Qadri had emptied one magazine of his assault rifle and then calmly reloaded it and continued firing, PPP leader Farahnaz Ispahani questioned why the other policemen assigned to guard Taseer had not reacted during this timeframe.
"A time span of around 30 seconds, during which the assassin shot at the Governor and dropped his weapon, saw zero activity by the rest of the guards," The News daily said in a report.
Qadri's colleagues were "apparently very confident and sure that he meant no further harm" and this is "another question that merits an answer," the report said.
Qadri had also recently changed his lifestyle and grown a beard, "which could easily be identified with the faction that feels strongly about blasphemy," it said.
The daily quoted police sources as saying that Qadri had "nursed a grudge against the Punjab Governor over his blunt statement" on blasphemy.
The assassin was associated with Dawat-e-Islami, a non-political and non-violent religious group with Barelvi leanings, a colleague of Qadri told the media.
Qadri, who has five brothers and four sisters, got married three years back and his first child, a son, was born four months ago.
Police detained his brothers and father from their house in Rawalpindi soon after Qadri confessed to his crime.

While Qadri,Taseer's bodyguard,was charged with murder and terrorism,the police arrested 29 more people suspected of involvement in the assassination.Mindful of the controversy that followed Benazir Bhutto's assassination in December 2008,investigators made every effort to preserve forensic evidence from the murder site.Were being extra careful in ensuring that every piece of evidence is preserved.We dont want to leave any loophole, said another police officer.
Qadri is believed to be associated with a religious organization called Dawat-i-Islami,considered a moderate,non-political and non-violent group of the Barelvi school of Islam.He was appointed Taseers bodyguard during the governors visits to Islamabad and,significantly,was also once with PM Gilani's security detail.
The Rawalpindi police special branch officer Nasir Khan Durrani had earlier marked Qadri and 10 other security personnel as a risk for VVIPs due to their strong religious leanings.The investigations currently are focussed on whether the arrested police commando,who has confessed to killing Taseer because of his calls to reform blasphemy laws,acted alone or was part of a larger conspiracy.
Observers said the governor's assassination by a police commando underscored how deeply religious extremism had penetrated Pakistani society.

ISLAMABAD: Despite threats from a section of clerics that anyone who grieved for slain Punjab Governor Salman Taseer would meet a similar fate, people crowded his gubernatorial residence in Lahore on Wednesday to pay their last respects before his body was buried with full state honours.
In fact, there were reports from Lahore that the funeral prayers were delayed because several clerics refused to lead the ‘namaaz-e-janaaza' (funeral prayer). This reluctance on the part of clerics to lead the funeral prayers was attributed to a diktat issued to this effect by Jamaat-e-Ahl-e-Sunnat Pakistan. The body was then flown to a nearby graveyard for burial in the presence of his three sons and a close circle of friends and relatives.
While President Asif Ali Zardari did not attend the funeral for security reasons, the entire leadership of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) — which rules Punjab province at the head of a coalition government — was apparently asked by the Pakistan People's Party to stay away for fear that it could lead to clashes between workers of the two parties.

HAIL OF BULLETS ENDS INDIAN SON’S QUEST FOR HIS DAD’S LOVE

THE SLAIN governor of Pakistan’s Punjab province Salmaan Taseer’s India connect dates back to March 1980 — and reads like a story straight out of a Bollywood movie.
In 1980, Taseer wrote a political biography of his hero, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the Pakistan People’s Party leader and prime minister who was executed by dictator General Zia- ul Haq.
When Taseer came to Mumbai to promote this book, he met Tavleen Singh, an Indian journalist, at a five- star hotel. Though married with children, Taseer spent the entire week with Singh, who became pregnant.
He dissuaded her from having the child, but she did so anyway, and they lived together in London for a while.
Typically, Taseer went on to have more affairs and an embittered Singh returned to Delhi.
Their lovechild, Aatish, lived with a fading photograph and no memory of his father for 21 years.

'Blasphemous' Asia Bibi facing suicide attack threat in Pakistan

Asia Bibi, the Christian woman who triggered a blasphemy furore in Pakistan and in whose defence Punjab governor Salman Taseer lost his life, is facing a threat of a suicide attack inside a jail, where she is currently lodged.
The "Moaviya group", a militant organisation plans to mount a suicide attack on Sheikhupura district jail, where 45-year-old Asia is being held, The Express Tribune quoted its sources as saying. An intelligence report issued last week has corroborated threat to her life.
Punjab police and jail authorities subsequently beefed up security due to the intelligence report and the assassination of Taseer.
Asia Bibi was sentenced to death last year after being convicted under the blasphemy law for insulting Prophet Mohammed. She denied the charge and said she was framed by a group of Muslim women with whom she had a row.

Swami Aseemanand involved in Samjhauta blast: Sources

New Delhi : Investigators probing Samjhauta Express blast case have claimed to have found evidence of right-wing activist Swami Aseemanand’s alleged involvement in the 2007 terror act.
“After the probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), it is getting clear that Aseemanand and his accomplices were involved in Samjhauta blast,” sources privy to the investigation said.
As many as 68 people were killed when RDX-laden explosives were triggered in the Samjhauta train, the oldest rail link between India and Pakistan, in Haryana on the night of February 17, 2007.
Without elaborating in detail, Home Minister P Chidambaram had said yesterday there was some progress in the case and the NIA has achieved a breakthrough.

Anti-US cleric Muqtada al-Sadr returns to Iraq

Baghdad: Anti-American cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, who led several Shia uprisings against American forces in Iraq before travelling to neighbouring Iran at least three years ago, has returned to Iraq, officials said Wednesday.
Mr. Al-Sadr's return caps another dramatic rise to prominence for him and his followers after they were routed by Iraqi and U.S. forces and appeared to fade from power just a few years ago. The strong showing by his bloc in last year's parliamentary elections and his key support for Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki paved the way for the return.
It was not immediately clear how long Mr. al-Sadr would stay in Iraq or whether the return marked a permanent decision to remain in the country, where his presence would certainly mark a seismic shift in Iraqi politics.
A Sadrist official in Baghdad, Mohammed al-Kaabi, said Mr. al-Sadr was in the holy city of Najaf .

Saudis nab vulture ‘spying’ for Mossad

Saudi authorities have nabbed a vulture on suspicion of spying for Israel’s espionage agency Mossad after it was found bearing a tag of Tel Aviv university, local media reported.
The bird had strayed into the Saudi Arabian territory and was found in a rural area wearing a transmitter and a leg bracelet bearing the words “Tel Aviv University”, Israeli daily Ma’ariv reported.
The tag could indicate that the vulture was a part of a long-term research project into migration patterns, but residents and local reporters told Saudi Arabia’s Al-Weeam newspaper that the matter seemed to be a “Zionist plot”, the report said.

Five JeM terrorists get life imprisonment

NEW DELHI: Five Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorists were on Thursday sentenced to life imprisonment by a trial court in connection with Millenium Park encounter in the year 2003.
The court handed down life imprisonment on 7 counts. The accused have been convicted under Prevention of Anti- terrorist Act (POTA) which is repealed now.
While sentencing convicts Noor Mohammad Tantre, Pervaiz Ahmed Mir, Faroz Ahmed Bhat and brothers Atiq-uz-Zama and Raees-uz-Zama, arrested by Delhi police in August 2003, Additional Session Judge R K Gauba also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on each of them.
The court had convicted them on January 3. "These foot soldiers of forces inimical to India and bent upon sabotaging the peace and tranquillity here, besides posing a serious threat to its unity, sovereignty and integrity, have to be neutralised.

UK converts to Islam up by 40,000 in a decade, report says

LONDON // Unprecedented numbers of Britons have converted to Islam over the past decade, according to a study.
Ten years ago, it was estimated that more than 60,000 Britons were converts. The report published yesterday puts the current figure at about 100,000, with an estimated 5,200 converts turning to Islam each year.
According to the report compiled by researchers at Swansea University for Faith Matters – a Muslim group dedicated to interfaith dialogue -more than half the converts were white, indigenous Britons. Two-thirds of them were women. The average age was just under 28.
The findings were, perhaps, surprising at a time when Islamophobia in the UK is high and when media portrayal of Muslims – converts in particular – is often in connection with extremism or terrorist activity.

New Delhi: The Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said that India was such a secular country where Urdu can never die but there was a need to link it to job opportunities so that it can live with full energy. In his presidential address to the members of the National Urdu Council’s annual meeting, he said to the members that they only could give valuable suggestions which will be implemented by the government as it was committed to promote Urdu so that it could be linked to jobs for the development of the Urdu speaking community. He further said significant development had been taking place in the field of education the world over and so the Urdu medium students too should be keep abreast of the development in science and technology so that they do not feel left out. He listened to the suggestions and views of the members with attentions and agreed with them promising to implement them. Replying to a question regarding the scarcity of Urdu teachers in Urdu schools, he said that if the Delhi government made a request to him he could readily provide 100 teachers. He further said that under the RTE, new Urdu medium schools would be set up in Urdu majority areas and the arrangement for the Urdu medium education will be made in Central Schools wherever needed. In the new year, new steps would be taken for the promotion of Urdu newspapers, Urdu education and Urdu books and there would be no paucity of funds in this regard, he said. He added that a meeting of the Education Ministers of all the states would be held on January 20 in which the appointment of Urdu teachers and the promotion of Urdu education would be specially discussed. Mr Sibal praised the efforts of the NCPUL for the educational activities, publication of books, translations and promotion of computer and technical education. Before that the Director of NCPUL, Hamidullah Bhatt presented a report on the activities of the Council in the previous year and the agenda on the projects for the New Year.

New Delhi: The Imam of Scholars of Hadith and great Sufi saint Hadhrat Shah Waliullah’s Urs was held at Astana Shah Waliullah at the Qabrasthan Mehndian behind Arvind Hospital, Delhi Gate between 10 am to 1 pm on January 5. Maulana Ashraf Quraishi, Editor Anokhi Shan especially attended the ceremony and delivered a scholarly lecture on visits to graves saying that Imam Shafayi would travel from Palestine to Baghdad every year to visit the mausoleum of Hadhrat Imam Abu Hanifa and would lead the namaz in the Masjid Imam Azam according to the Hanafi sect. He further said that Allah had bestowed such powers on the Sufi saints that they could help the common people in distress. The demise of Hadhrat Shah Waliullah had happened a long time back but the people got divine help from his astana till today.

New Delhi: The joint meeting of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board and Babri Masjid Action Committee to discuss and chart out the future course of action after the Allahabad High Court verdict and the petition filed in the Supreme Court. The senior members of AIMPLB and a party in the case the Sunni Wakf Board will attend the meeting. The petition was to be filed within three months of the judgment delivered by the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court on September 30. The initial petition was filed by the Sunni Wakf Board in this connection.

The managing committee of the Delhi Book Fair has declared the award considering the selection of books, publications and presentation of the library. New Delhi: The 10-day Taj Mahal Cultural Heritage Celebrations titled the Taj Mahotsav will be held in Agra from February 18. The celebrations had started in 1993 as an initiative to promote tourism but overtime it was reduced to the local level. However, the district administration and the tourism department took the initiative to bring back its lost glory. The Divisional Commissioner Sudhir M Babde said that a grand mushaira dedicated to the masters of Urdu ghazal Mirza Ghalib and Mir Taqi Mir would be held in the Sur Sadan Auditorium. An ehibition of India handicrafts and culinary delights would also be put up on the occasion. 350 stalls are being allotted to artists and craftsmen, he added.

Hundreds of young British girls exploited by Pak-origin people

London : Hundreds of young British girls were allegedly being exploited by gangs of people of Pakistani heritage in the UK, local media reported today.
Most of the victims are white and most of the convicted offenders are of Pakistani heritage, unlike other known models of child-sex offending in Britain, including child abuse initiated by online grooming, in which the vast majority of perpetrators are white, according to a report in The Times.
Northern police forces have investigated gangs of on-street predators for at least 14 years. In the most serious cases, children have been moved around the country in cars and used for sex by older men.
This has led to abortions for girls as young as 12. In November, a court heard that when a South Yorkshire victim, aged 13, was examined by a nurse it was found that she have been raped more than 50 times.

Indians top non-Arab community: Kuwait

Dubai : With a population of around 600,000, Indians top the list of non-Arab foreigners living in Kuwait, official statistics have said.
According to the country's Immigration General Administration, a large number of them (233,000) worked as domestic helpers while around 81,000 were on dependent visas.
Of domestic helpers, 26,374 were men and 54,708 women while those on dependent visas included 157,000 men and 76,000 women.
According to New Delhi reports, around four million Indians live in the Gulf.
The Sri Lankan community in Kuwait is the second largest, with an estimated population of 84,000, followed by the Bangladeshi community with around 68,000, and the Filipino community with around 60,000 people.

Karachi targeted killings claimed 748 lives last year: HRCP

KARACHI: A total of 748 people lost their lives to targeted killings in the city last year, up from the 272 victims in 2009, says a report released by the Sindh chapter of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan on Wednesday.
The figure includes targeted killings of 447 people on political, ethnic and sectarian grounds and 301 on other grounds.
According to the report, a total of 1,981 people — 1,726 men, 177 women and 78 children — were killed last year. The data does not include those killed in road accidents.
Of the 447 victims of targeted killings, 215 were killed apparently for their association with major political, religious and nationalist parties, 187 for their ethnic background and 23 on sectarian grounds.

Three Nato soldiers, three Afghans killed in unrest

KABUL: Three Nato-led troops were killed in separate attacks in Afghanistan on Wednesday, the force said, as residents of a restive province accused the alliance’s troops of killing Afghan civilians.
Two soldiers were killed in an improvised bomb explosion in eastern Afghanistan and a third died in a similar attack in the country’s south, Nato’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in statements.
With Wednesday’s deaths six foreign troops have lost their lives so far this year, following a record 711 who perished in 2010, according to independent website icasualties.org.
There are about 140,000 US-led international troops in Afghanistan fighting Taliban militants who have waged a bloody insurgency against Afghan and foreign forces since their ouster by a US-led invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001.

Many 9/11 survivors show lasting traumatic stress

NEW YORK: Many civilian survivors of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Centre were still suffering from symptoms of post-traumatic stress several years after the 2001 disaster, according to a study. The study, the first to focus on the long-term mental health of people who were actually in the Twin Towers on the morning of Sept. 11, also found that the biggest predictor of long-term post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) had nothing to do with the disaster itself. Instead, it was income. The research team, led by Sandro Galea of Columbia University in New York, surveyed nearly 3,700 people who escaped the Trade Centre and found that 96 percent still had at least one symptom of PTSD two to three years later. Of those, 15 percent screened positive for full-blown PTSD, a rate about four times higher than that seen in the general population in any given year.

Seattle Muslim Targeted in Bias Attack: CAIR

SEATTLE, WA: The Washington state chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-WA) today reported that a Seattle man who allegedly threatened a Muslim cashier in late December has been charged under that state's hate crime statute.
CAIR-WA said the alleged assailant reportedly told a Muslim clerk at a Seattle grocery store that he would kill her if she did not leave America. According to Seattle police, the alleged assailant said, "This is f**king America, why are you here," to the victim who, according to the police report, wears an Islamic head scarf. Media reports indicate the victim's name is "common to the Middle East and North Africa."
The alleged perpetrator, who was charged with the hate crime of malicious harassment, reportedly told the cashier he would "get her" at the end of her shift. A "bias code" of "anti-Islamic" is noted in the police report (Case 2010-442897).

Quiet end to Turkey's college headscarf ban

Now, for the first time, almost all universities across Turkey have abandoned the official prohibition on women wearing headscarves.
(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Every morning Yasemin Derbaz puts on the piece of cloth that marks her out as an observant Muslim. Millions of other Turkish women do the same: it is estimated that at least 60% cover their heads.
The Islamic headscarf has become a divisive symbol, which bars women from jobs and education, and came close to bringing down a government two years ago.
Yasemin can now go to her architecture classes at Yildiz Technical University for the first time without wearing a large hat or a wig to cover her hair.
"I feel happy that I don't have to stop in a mosque on the way and change into my wig," she said.

Saudi Wahhabi Authorities Arrested a Shia Citizen For Performing Communal Prayers

Al-Ibrahim was accused of hiring a hall to perform the communal prayers and called the prominent Shi'a cleric "Sayyid Muhammad Baqir al-Nasir" to lead the Shi'a prayers in that hall . This action of al-Ibrahim was considered a violation to a ban on Shiites in al-Ahsa to perform the communal prayers publicly or privately.

Should churches loan worship space to Muslims?

Some Christian churches recently have gained attention for lending their space for Muslim worship.
(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Nice brotherhood move, right? Not so fast, says a writer in Christianity Today, Jason B. Hood, the scholar-in-residence at Christ United Methodist Church in Memphis.
He points to Heartsong Church in Cordova, Tennessee, where Steve Stone invited his church's Muslim neighbors "to use their sanctuary as a makeshift mosque throughout Ramadan while the Islamic Center was under construction."
And Hood gives a similar example at Aldersgate United Methodist church in Arlington, Va., where an Islamic congregation was welcomed to use the church's space for Friday prayers for several months.

Malaysia's 'Young Imam' reality show goes global

Kuala Lumpur: A hit Malaysian Islamic reality TV show is widening its search for the best young Muslim leader by inviting contestants from around the world to take part in the programme.
Combining a reality TV format with Islamic teachings, "Imam Muda" or "Young Imam" which first aired last year became a hit, attracting interest in Malaysia and overseas.
The primetime show features contestants dressed in sharp-looking black suits who are judged on a variety of tasks from reciting Koranic verses and washing corpses to counseling promiscuous young couples.
The first season allowed only Malaysians to compete, but auditions for the upcoming second series that will air in April will be open to anyone between the ages of 18 and 27 who can speak Malay.

Pak arrests 22 over Taseer's killing

Islamabad : A total of 22 people, including many policemen, have been arrested by Pakistani authorities over the killing of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, amid reports that a top official had warned about the extremist leanings of the assassin of the outspoken PPP leader.
The joint investigation team probing Taseer's killing yesterday arrested two officials, who assigned Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, the policeman responsible for gunning down Taseer yesterday, to the Governor's security detail and eight more personnel of the Elite Force, local media reported today.
Three more policemen from Rawalpindi, including an officer, were arrested this morning.
Police detained Qadri's five brothers and father yesterday and three more of his relatives, who were apparently aware of his plan to kill the Governor were arrested today.

Iran daily says U.S. woman held on spying charges

(Reuters) - An Iranian newspaper reported on Thursday that an American woman had been arrested on suspicion of spying after entering the country illegally by land.
The report, which could not be immediately confirmed by officials, was published in a column in the state-owned daily Iran, which is not known for carrying accurate reports.
If verified, the arrest would further strain relations between Tehran and the West which are facing off over Iran's nuclear programme. Iran is already holding two U.S. citizens on spying charges.
The report said the woman had entered the country from Armenia and was detained by customs guards in the town of Nordouz in northwestern Iran. An espionage device was found in her teeth, it said.

Plot to kill Afghan vice-prez foiled

Two major attacks, a plot to assassinate the country’s first vice president and a planned bombing near the President’s palace, have been foiled by the Afghan intelligence services.
Latifullah Mashal, spokesman for the services, said authorities arrested five people who had been plotting a shooting and suicide bomb attack at the home of First Vice President Marshal Mohammad Qasim Fahim.
“They were arrested when they were very close to attacking,” Mashal told a news conference, adding that the five were members of the Haqqani network, an Al Qaeda-linked militant group based in neighbouring Pakistan. He would not give an exact timing of the arrests or the planned attack, citing security reasons.
The other foiled attack was a planned car or suicide bombing near President Hamid Karzai’s palace, Mashal said. The two suspects arrested in that case had been involved in rocket attacks against NATO and coalition forces in the past, he added.

Carla Bruni embroiled in ‘left-wing terrorist extradition’ controversy

London : French First Lady Carla Bruni Sarkozy has come under fire for allegedly intervening to prevent the extradition of a left-wing terrorist convicted of four murders from Brazil to Italy.
Battisti has been convicted in his absence of four murders and sentenced to life but denies all the killings.
Bruni-Sarkozy, 43, was accused by an Italian victim support group of personally calling former Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and asking him not to send Cesare Battisti back to his native country for being tried.
Lula was told it would be a ‘personal favour’. The alleged intervention was criticised by Italian politicians.
Bruno Berardi, president of Domus Civitas, said on Italian TV that Bruni-Sarkozy had intervened in another extradition – that of Marina Petrella, from France to Italy three years ago.

US-Pak-Afghan trilateral meeting to be held in Feb

Washington : The top leaders of US, Pakistan and Afghanistan would meet here next month for the second tri-lateral dialogue as part of the on-going effort of the Obama Administration to increase the co-operation among the three countries on the fight against terrorism in the region.
The US-Af-Pak tri-lateral dialogue is being held here after a gap of nearly two years. The last one was held within months of Barack Obama being sworn in as the US President.
The meeting was held at the level of Heads of State and was attended by Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai and Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari.
No other tri-lateral meetings could be held in 2008 because of the elections in Afghanistan and a packed schedule in 2009 wherein Clinton had held three Strategic Dialogues with Pakistan and one with Afghanistan.

Sadhvi Pragya's brother attempts suicide, alleges harassment

New Delhi : The brother of Malegaon blast accused Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur attempted suicide in south-east Delhi today alleging that he was "harassed" by investigating agencies.
Sadhvi Pragya is prime accused in the so-called 'Hindu', or 'Saffron' terror-tagged terrorist activities against the minority community.
Ananth Brahmachari consumed poison and was found unconscious in Jangpura locality this afternoon, police sources said.
He was rushed to AIIMS where he is undergoing treatment, they said.
Central investigating agencies are pursuing the matter in which many top leaders of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) have been accused of fomenting terrorism.
The case has vertically divided the Indian political spectrum with the Congress-led ruling coalition saying the 'Sangh parivar' was behind these activities.

New Delhi: Even as J&K CM Omar Abdullah voiced his disapproval of plans by BJPs youth wing to hoist the national flag in Srinagar,the BJP on Wednesday described the programme as part of a campaign for national solidarity and sovereignty.
The BJP and its youth wing are organising a Rashtriya Ekta Yatra starting from Kolkata which will travel through several states and culminate in Srinagar on January 26 with hoisting of the national flag at Lal Chowk on Republic Day.
BJP maintains that Jammu & Kashmir is an integral part of India.We are going to carry the national flag not in one state but through several states.This is part of a campaign for national sovereignty and solidarity, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said.

Iran's Foreign Min in Iraq to cement ties

Iran’s new Foreign Minister is pushing to cement ties with neighbouring Iraq at a time when American troops are preparing to go home and Tehran’s influence is expected to rise. Officials from around the Middle East have been streaming into Iraq since the new Shiite-led Government was sworn-in last month, nine months after an inconclusive election that led to prolonged political wrangling.
Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi’s visit came a few days after Jordan and Egypt sent senior delegations.
Iraq’s mainly Sunni neighbours are racing to try to gain more influence in Iraq, partly to counter Iran’s influence. Ties between Iran and Iraq, both Shiite-dominated countries, were troubled before the 2003 US-led invasion toppled Saddam Hussein’s Sunni minority-led Government.

Malaysian Minister denies raping Indonesian maid

A Malaysian Cabinet Minister denied on Wednesday he had raped his Indonesian maid four years ago, saying the allegations circulating on the Internet are part of a campaign to discredit the Government before general elections. The accusations against Information Minister Rais Yatim were made by an Indonesian labour activist group in an internal report that was leaked and made its way into blog postings.
Rais, who had remained silent until now, issued a strong denial through the State news agency, Bernama. Without naming anyone, he blamed bloggers and opposition parties for “ugly and wicked lies.” “I deny the allegations, whether it involves raping any individual four years ago or any other accusation raised by wild writers on the Internet or by any political party,” he said in the statement.

UNLIKE Willie Somerset Chandran of V. S. Naipaul’s 2001 novel, Half A Life , South African photographer Omar Badsha, of Gujarati Muslim origin, has no doubts about his roots. He leads a full life as a South African. A lot of it has to do with the fact that he was born in Durban, South Africa, in 1945 to second- generation Indian- South Africans but it was only in 1996 that he first travelled to India.
“ For me, coming to India is not about tracing my roots. My attachments are not here and I’ve been removed from my ancestry here. I’m a South African and that’s where I belong,” Badsha says before his presentation at the Press Club of India on Monday. Badsha, now 65 and based in Cape Town, was in the Capital to talk about his rich social documentary work that has been one of the milestones in his country’s long struggle for freedom from Apartheid. A photographer, artist and activist, Badsha has been closely involved with South Africa’s anti- Apartheid and labour movements and he has documented most of his country’s changing history through photos.

Pak guv laid to rest as zealots warn ‘ liberals’

SALMAAN Taseer, the assassinated governor of Pakistan’s Punjab province, was laid to rest on Tuesday in a military graveyard in his native city of Lahore.
The funeral came as new revelations about his murderer surfaced and precipitated a fresh debate over the fate of those who want a change in the blasphemy laws, which are said to have caused Taseer’s murder.
Earlier, Pakistan Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani attended the funeral prayers for Taseer, along with thousands of charged Pakistan People’s Party ( PPP) workers who chanted slogans against Punjab’s Pakistan Muslim League ( Nawaz) government for being partners in Taseer’s murder.
Sources in the Punjab police and the PPP said anti- Punjab government emotions ran so high at the funeral on the large lawns of Lahore’s Governor’s House that “ the senior leaders of Pakistan Muslim League ( Nawaz), including chief minister Shahbaz Sharif and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif decided not to attend”. PPP workers accused the Sharifs and their administration of not providing the slain governor with thoroughly screened security staff and not heeding to his demands for a bullet- proof vehicle.

Abu Ismail's pants, map shown to court

MUMBAI: The blood-stained cargo trousers of deceased 26/11 attacker Abu Ismail and a handmade map allegedly recovered from his pocket were shown to the Bombay High Court on Wednesday during the prosecution's argument against the acquittal of Fahim Ansari.
Fahim and Sabahuddin Ahmed, both accused of preparing maps of 26/11 targets, were acquitted by a trial court here last May.
The State appealed against their acquittal.
Refuting the lower court's observation that the sketch found on Ismail had no bloodstains or wrinkles, public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said the sketch was in the right pocket of the trousers whereas Ismail was injured on the left side. Thus, the map remained stain-free.
Justices Ranjana Desai and R.V. More examined Ismail's trousers with a magnifying glass. They also saw the map.
Mr. Nikam told the court the decision on Fahim rested on whether to believe the sworn testimony of witnesses against him or his version that the map was prepared by him under duress while in police custody.

Now, terrorists cant get out of Maha jails soon

Mumbai: As part of its effort to crack down on terrorism,the Maharashtra government has made it harder for people convicted of terrorist and extremist activities to get out of jail early.
The government has framed guidelines under which those convicted under special laws,including the Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (Mcoca),Prevention of Terrorism Act (Pota) and the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (Tada),both of which have been repealed,will have to serve 40-60 years in prison.This includes remission (extra days credited to a jail term).
A person sentenced to life imprisonment under the Indian Penal Code is required to spend his or her entire life in jail.But the state government has discretion to order premature release of a convict once he or she completes 14 years in prison.
The rules for premature release stipulate various categories,depending on the gravity of the crime,with the most stringent category prescribing a maximum jail term of 30 years,including remission.

Naming new Punjab governor a test for Zardari

ISLAMABAD/KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari faces a daunting task of finding a suitable replacement for the slain Punjab Governor Salman Taseer as the PML-N appears to have decided to oust PPP ministers from the coalition government in the province.
Pakistan Muslim League-N chief Nawaz Sharif issued the threat to the People’s Party precisely at the time the tough-talking Taseer fell to an assassin’s bullets.
Mr Taseer, who gave a tough time to the Shahbaz Sharif-led Punjab government, could not get an opportunity this time to salvage his party from a serious crisis that it faces, leaving the PPP and President Zardari in a difficult position.
There is no doubt that the PPP, which has been struggling to strengthen its footing in Punjab, depended on Mr Taseer because of his close contacts with the PML-Q and other anti-PML-N forces.

Morocco breaks up Al-Qaeda cell

RABAT: Morocco said it had arrested a member of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) among 26 others who planned to attack security services and rob banks using weapons they hid in an area of the disputed Western Sahara.
Quoting an Interior Ministry statement, the local media said Moroccan security forces recently broke up the 27-member cell and had discovered weapon caches in Amghala, an oasis located in the disputed Western Sahara.
"Moroccan security services have succeeded in dismantling a terrorist cell of 27 members, among whom is a member of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb who was tasked by this organization to set up a rear base in Morocco where it would plan terrorist acts," it said.
The ministry did not say when or where they were arrested.
"Members of the cell, supervised by a Moroccan citizen who is in the Al-Qaeda camps in northern Mali, have been planning terrorist acts using explosive belts and car bombs that mainly target security services and to rob banks to fund their terrorist projects," it added.

'Four million single women in Kingdom by 2015'

JEDDAH: Abdul Aziz Al-Fouzan, a member of the government's Human Rights Commission (HRC), said the number of single Saudi women over the age of 32 is expected to grow to four million by 2015.
The HRC estimates the number of spinsters (defined, says Al-Fouzan, as single women over the age of 32) to be at least 1.4 million.
"This means that there is an unmarried woman among every 16 Saudi women," he said in a recent lecture. "There are a variety of reasons behind this phenomenon including unemployment, a housing shortage and obsolete social traditions."
The number of single women in this age category is higher in the cities than in the countryside, he added. He, however, cautioned against assuming marrying girls is the cure for the problem.

Nurses face sexual harassment in hospitals

HAFR Al-BATEN: Authorities in Hafr Al-Baten have launched a thorough investigation into a number of allegations about sex attacks on nurses working evening and night shifts at hospitals in the region.
One of the hospitals where several recent incidents occurred is King Khaled Hospital in Hafr Al-Baten where nurses on night duty reported being attacked by patients, Al-Yaum newspaper reported recently.
“I shouted and cried out for help,” said one Asian victim who was attacked by a patient. “I only escaped narrowly after threatening the guy that I would call the police,” she added, while urging the authorities to restrict night shifts to male nurses except in the maternity wards. Another nurse spoke about the time when a duty doctor tried to sexually abuse her. “He started talking to me and made some obscene remarks. If I responded positively, then he might have taken it further and tried to sexually abuse me,” she said.

Former militant slams media for linking Al-Qaeda to Saudi Arabia

JEDDAH: Accusing the media of trying to link Al-Qaeda to Saudi Arabia, Jaber Al-Fifi, a former militant who was No. 20 on the Kingdom’s list of 85 most-wanted terrorists, told the Saudi Channel 1 on Tuesday evening that the organization depends primarily on non-Saudi recruits in Afghanistan under the leadership of Osama Bin Laden.
“I made the vow of allegiance to a man named Abu Baseer who was a Yemeni and an assistant to Bin Laben,” he said on the program “Homomna” (“Our Concerns”).
Al-Fifi returned to the Kingdom from his voluntary exile in Yemen, announced his repentance and was rehabilitated at Prince Muhammad bin Naif Center for Religious Advice. “The organization in Yemen was shaken up after its leader and field commander Muhammad Al-Aoufi gave himself up to the Saudi authorities benefiting from the pardon given to militants,” he said, adding that most of the members could not believe their ears when they heard the news.

Passengers foil Turkish Airlines hijack attempt: TV

ISTANBUL: A Turkish passenger on a Turkish Airlines flight from Oslo to Istanbul tried to hijack the plane before being overpowered by other passengers, security sources said quoted by Turkish media.
The would-be hijacker, named as Yasar Cuma, who comes from a Kurdish village in the southeastern region of Anatolia, headed for the cockpit of the Boeing 737-800 less than an hour before arrival at Istanbul and demanded that the aircraft return to Oslo, claiming to have a bomb.
But the 40-year-old was tackled by Turkish and Norwegian passengers and the plane landed safely at Istanbul's Ataturk airport at 1930 GMT, CNN-Turk and Anatolia news agency reported.
The suspect was immediately arrested on board the plane which was carrying 59 passengers. No explosive device was found, CNN-Turk said.
After police interrogated Cuma they found he was suffering from psychological problems, Anatolia said.

Anarchist group claims responsibility for Athens blast

Athens: A radical anarchist group suspected of sending dozens of parcel bombs to embassies in Athens and European government leaders claimed responsibility Wednesday for a bomb explosion outside an Athens court Dec 30.
The group, Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei, said it was responsible for the powerful bomb hidden on a parked motorcycle outside two court buildings in central Athens Dec 30 in a proclamation sent to Indymedia.
The explosion caused extensive damage to buildings and parked cars but no injuries.
Conspiracy of Cells said the blast was in support of an upcoming trial of radical anarchists later this month, adding that it would carry out further attacks in the weeks ahead.
Over a dozen suspects will be tried Jan 17 for alleged involvement in the group which has also claimed responsibility for sending 14 parcel bombs to embassies in Athens and European government leaders in mid-November.

NAZARETH (Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Palestinian youth interrupted a Tel Aviv University speech by Ehud Barak, calling the Israeli war minister a Gaza child killer.
Barak was giving a speech covering Iran and the Mideast political situation before senior military and academic officials from Israel and abroad when he was repeatedly interrupted by demonstrators against Israeli policies targeting Palestinians.
The demonstrators raised images of Palestinians who were killed and injured in the late 2008 early 2009 Gaza war, and shouted at Barak: "You are a killer of children in Gaza and a liar. You are only trying to instill fear in the people."
Thrown into a state of confusion, Barak signaled to security to have the protesters removed from the hall.
After calm returned to the scene, Barak said he did not see a need to respond to the protesters' accusations, saying their behavior was "childish".
"I'm the last person who feels compelled to apologize to anyone," he said.
