Report documents the deteriorating state of minorities in Pakistan

Islamabad: A Think Tank working on minority issues in Pakistan has called upon the government to repeal the blasphemy law, or at least amend it to remove all vague terminology to prevent its misuse.The Jinnah Institute’s report, “A Question of Faith”, also calls for addition of a section in the Pakistan Penal Code making advocacy of religious hatred or incitement to discrimination or violence a punishable offence.
The institute has published 23 recommendations, including the removal of impunity for prayer leaders in mosques, police and judicial reforms and clarification of the status of Federal Shariat Court and the Council of Islamic Ideology. It also calls for an appointment of a “Special Ombudsman” to protect the rights of women and minorities.
The research team interviewed 125 people including minority representatives, victims and non-governmental organisations’ workers all over Pakistan between December 2010 and April 2011. It documents the deterioration in the political, social and economic status of members of religious minorities in Pakistan, “particularly the rising tide of vigilante violence against them”, according to a press release issued by the institute.
The report focuses on Christians, Hindus and Ahmadis, three prominent minority groups in the country. According to the report, the conditions for Christians have deteriorated over the years. The Christians “are on the frontline of the persecution and violence against minority communities.”
Interviews with Christians of different age groups and professions revealed that many of them felt they “are treated as second-class citizens and discriminated against in all aspects of life.” Moreover, most of those who can, do move away from Pakistan. Those who choose to stay back do so because of a “strong sense of commitment to the country and being ‘Pakistani’.”
Christians in rural areas have to deal with instances of their land being grabbed by local Muslim residents and in some of the more serious incidents, the Christian residents did not come back to their homes.
Eighty per cent of the Hindus in Pakistan live in Sindh, and “are victims of caste and wider religious discrimination,” said the report. They do not own lands and work on daily wages, a consequence of them not having any permanent settlement. The report said, “One day, they are with one landlord, the next day with another. And this is how they spend a life of debt, with no accountability or education.”
Their castes have translated into daily life. For instance, Hindus from a lower caste might be restricted to a separate water well in a school, “from which even the Muslims will not drink”.
Higher caste Hindus have their own set of problems to contend with. They live in a state of insecurity and are frequently kidnapped for ransom. For instance, 82-year-old Lakki Chand Garji, a prominent Hindu spiritual leader, was kidnapped on December 21, 2010 and is yet to be traced and rescued.
Then there’s the matter of Hindus being suspected of having sympathy for India. Some Hindus said that “they dealt with the repercussions of the destruction of the Babri Masjid across the border in India in 1992.”
Violence against the Ahmaddiya community has also been on the rise in the past three years, according to the report. The report attributed the increase in violence to maulvis “promoting such attacks and inciting violence in their sermons and in the media.”

BEIRUT - More then 120 Syrian security officers were killed in battles with gunmen, state television said, in the first report of large-scale clashes in a revolt against President Bashar Al Assad.
The report said on Monday armed groups set government buildings ablaze in the northwestern town of Jisr Al Shughour, stole five tonnes of dynamite and were firing at civilians and security forces with machineguns and rocket-propelled grenades.
Wissam Tarif, director of human rights organisation Insan, disputed the official report, saying the clashes were between loyalist troops and army members who had defected. He called the number of deaths ‘inconsistent’.
‘An army unit or division arrived to the area in the morning. It seems then another unit (in the afternoon) arrived to contain the defection,’ Tarif told Reuters. He said several people in Jisr Al Shoghour had confirmed that version of events.
Opposition activists said earlier that forces had launched a security operation in the town on Saturday and at least 37 residents and 10 police had been killed. It was impossible to verify the conflicting accounts as authorities have prevented most international media from operating in Syria.
‘The security forces have managed to end a blockade of one of the neighbourhoods that was seized by the gunmen for awhile and are now battling them to end the blockade of the other neighbourhoods,’ the television said.
‘The gunmen mutilated some of the bodies and threw some into the river. The people in Jisr Al Shughour are urging the army to intervene speedily,’ it said.
Interior Minister Mohammad Ibrahim Al Shaar said authorities would respond firmly to armed attacks and Information Minister Adnan Mahmoud said the army, which has so far stayed out of the town, ‘will carry out their national duty to restore security’. Rights groups say 1,000 civilians have been killed in protests against the president which have swept from the southern city of Deraa to the Mediterranean coast and eastern Kurdish regions.
French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said France was ready to ask the UN Security Council to vote on a draft resolution condemning Syria for its crackdown despite the threat that Russia would veto the measure.
‘The situation is very clear. In Syria, the process of reform is dead and we think that Bashar has lost his legitimacy to rule the country,’ Juppe said in Washington on Monday.
‘We’ll see what the Russians will do. If they veto, they will take their responsibility. Maybe if they see that there are 11 votes in favour of the resolution, they will change their mind. So there is a risk to take and we’re ready to take it.’
Amnesty International urged the Security Council to refer Syria to the International Criminal Court.
ARMED REBELLION
Syrian forces crushed an armed Islamist revolt in the city of Hama in 1982 on the orders of Bashar’s father, President Hafez Al Assad, killing up to 30,000 people, leading to fears that the ferocity of the crackdown could increase further if the government comes up against an armed insurrection.
An activist told Reuters that police and members of the security forces in Jisr Al Shughour were killed by gunmen.
‘Some people in some areas have taken up arms,’ he said.
‘The situation is grave, what is happening is an armed rebellion. I oppose violence from whatever side it comes from.’
Residents said violence erupted in Jisr Al Shughour on Saturday when snipers on the roof of the main post office fired at a funeral for six protesters killed the day before.
Mourners set fire to the post office, a history teacher in the town called Ahmad said. State television said eight members of the security forces were killed when gunmen attacked the post office building.
It said at least 20 security force members were killed in an ambush by ‘armed gangs’, and 82 were killed in an attack on a security post. It said the overall death toll for security forces was more than 120.
A rebellion in Jisr Al Shughour was crushed by Bashar’s father in 1980 with scores of deaths.
Assad has sent in tanks to crush demonstrations in certain flashpoints.
He also has made some reformist gestures, such as issuing a general amnesty to political prisoners and launching national dialogue, but protesters and opposition figures have dismissed such measures.

London: Pakistan has almost reached parity with India on nuclear weapons with both the nations having 110 warheads each, an International think-tank SIPRI has said, warning that Islamabad is in danger of "losing control of part of its nuclear arsenal" to terrorists.
Charging that India and Pakistan were "expanding their capacity to produce fissile material for military purposes, the report said that while India could have 80-110 nuclear warheads on Tuesday, up from 60-80 last year, Pakistan may have increased its count from 70-90 to 90-110.
Labelling Pakistan's nuclear programme as almost the fastest in the world, SIPRI said that both Islamabad and New Delhi continue to develop new ballistic and cruise missile systems capable of delivering nuclear weapons. "They are also expanding their capacities to produce fissile material for military purposes," the report said and claimed that Islamabad was now turning to producing lighter precision warheads for use in restricted spaces.
Releasing the report in the Swedish capital of Stockholm, Daniel Nord, Director of SIPRI said Pakistan may be close to danger of "losing control of part of its nuclear arsenal" to terrorist and said it was a matter of grave concern.
Nord said South Asia, where relations between India and Pakistan seem perpetually tense, is "the only place in the world where you have the nuclear arms race."
The Swedish institute said that more than 5,000 nuclear weapons were deployed around the world and eight nuclear power continue investing in new weapon system, making disarmament in the future unlikely.

TEHRAN: Iran's dream of competing in the London 2012 Olympic women's soccer tournament have been crushed by an unexpected ruling that their Islamic dress broke FIFA rules, a football federation official in Tehran said on Monday.
Iran is complaining to the world soccer body after its women were banned from playing, moments before an Olympic qualifier against Jordan last week, due to their full-body strip that includes a headscarf.
The head of women's affairs at Iran's football federation said Iran had made changes to its women's kit after a FIFA ban last year and believed it had been given the approval of the world federation and of its president, Sepp Blatter.
"We made the required corrections and played a match afterwards," Farideh Shojaei told Reuters TV in an interview.
"We played the next round and were not prevented from doing so, and they didn't find anything wrong. That meant that there are no obstacles in our path, and that we could participate in the Olympics." FIFA's rules for the 2012 Olympics state that: "Players and officials shall not display political, religious, commercial or personal messages or slogans in any language or form on their playing or team kits." In order to comply with the Islamic dress code, which is mandatory in the Islamic Republic, Iran's women footballers play in full tracksuits and headcoverings that conceal their hair.

Fatwa body bans mingling of sexes

JEDDAH: The permanent committee for issuing religious edicts, chaired by Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Sheikh, has banned the mingling of men and women at offices and educational institutions.
“Women are not allowed to work with men. For example, they cannot work as secretaries for men or at receptions, production lines or accounting sections in a commercial center, pharmacy or restaurant where men are also present,” the ruling said.
The committee, which made this comment while answering a question from a Saudi, warned that the mingling of sexes would have a negative effect on the family and society.
“Women’s work and education should be done without mingling with men. They should work in women-only workplaces, as Islamic teachings ban the mingling of sexes,” the committee said, quoting a verse from the Holy Qur’an: When you ask them (wives of the Prophet) for any goods, ask them from behind a curtain. This is purer for your hearts and for theirs — verse 53, Chapter Al-Ahzab.

Tackling terror: UK cabinet nod for crackdown on Muslim NGOs

LONDON: British PM David Cameron has prevailed in a hotly debated cabinet review calling for crackdown on moderate and non-violent Islamic organizations to counter terrorism. The details of this policy will be unveiled by home minister Theresa May perhaps as early as Tuesday.
Cameron's press office told TOI that it does not discuss details of cabinet meetings, but did not deny Cameron's pushing through with the new policy. Government sources revealed Cameron had said that even moderate Muslim organisations could be breeding grounds for extremists and a stepping stone to violence. Among those who strongly opposed Cameron's position was Pakistani-origin chairperson of Conservative party, Baroness Sayeeda Warsi. However, she was instructed not to air her disagreement in public.
The strategy, known as 'Prevent', will provide a broader definition of extremism, expanding this to include non-violent NGOs which advocate Sharia law in Britain.

Sikh loses three teeth in 'Osama's brother' racial attack in New York

NEW YORK: A Sikh Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) employee was sucker-punched by a man in Brooklyn who accused him of being related to Osama Bin Laden.
Jiwan Singh, 59, an Indian immigrant, was riding a Brooklyn train from his home in Richmond Hill, when the incident took place, the New York Daily News reports.
"He said, "You are the brother of Osama, and I replied, "I am not Osama. I have nothing to do with him," said Singh, who lost three teeth from the blows.
Singh blames the world's most notorious terrorist for the bias attacks he and his family has suffered over their religion.
Singh said that his son Jasmir, 23, lost an eye after being stabbed by attackers in 2009 who targeted him because of his turban and traditional beard.
"We are Indians," he said, recalling other "Osama" slurs he's endured because of his long, white beard.

Rocket barrage kills 5 US soldiers in Baghdad

BAGHDAD — Five American soldiers died Monday when a barrage of rockets slammed into a base in a Shiite neighborhood of Baghdad — the largest, single-day loss of life for U.S. forces in Iraq in two years.
The attack follows warnings from Shiite militants backed by Iran and anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr that they would violently resist any effort to keep American troops in Iraq past their year-end deadline to go home.
Although American casualties have dropped considerably in the two years since U.S. troops pulled back from Iraq cities, Shiite militias have begun hammering U.S. bases and vehicles with rockets, rocket-propelled grenades and roadside bombs over the past three months.
The militants’ goal appears twofold: to give the impression that they are driving the withdrawing U.S. forces out of Iraq, and to make the U.S. think long and hard before agreeing to any Iraqi request to keep a contingent of troops in this country beyond the end of the year.
“Iranian-backed militias are flexing their muscles and have steadily increased military pressure on U.S. forces since rumors first started in the early spring concerning an extension of the U.S. presence,” said Michael Knights, an Iraq analyst at the Washington Institute.

Karachi violence: 12 injured in attack on ex-PAC chief

KARACHI: At least 12 people have been injured in an attack on the chairman of the now-defunct People’s Aman Committee, Uzair Baloch, was attacked in the Ghasmandi area near Napier Road around 1 am on Tuesday morning.
According to police, Baloch was returning from a political rally when he was attacked. Witnesses say his attackers used hand grenades but police deny this. Sources say his convoy was attacked just when the power went out in the area he was passing by.

Palestinian mosque vandalized in West Bank

RAMALLAH, West Bank — Officials say that vandals have set fire to a West Bank mosque and scrawled Hebrew graffiti on one of its walls.
The Palestinian mayor of el-Mughayer village says a tire was burning inside the village mosque in an apparent attempt to set the entire building ablaze.
Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld says the graffiti read, ‘Price tag, Aley Ayin.’
The term ‘price tag’ refers to a settler policy of revenge for Israeli government operations against settlers. Aley Ayin is a small, unauthorized settler outpost that was evacuated last week.
Mayor Faraj Al Nassan says the villagers discovered the fire when they went to the mosque for morning prayers. He says prayer rugs were burned but the fire did not spread extensively.

AMRITSAR: With prayers on her lips and a bag full of evidences of her brother's innocence, Dalbir Kaur, sister of Sarabjit Singh, left for Pakistan from Attari land border on Monday to meet Singh in Kot Lakhpat jail and to persuade authorities there for his release.
Talking to TOI before crossing over the border, Dalbir Kaur said she was carrying evidences like government records, photographs, etc., proving that the person behind bars was Sarabjit Singh and not Manjit Singh. When Sarabjit Singh had crossed over to Pakistan in an inebriated condition in 1991 he was booked by Pakistani police on the charges of serial bomb blasts in the name of Manjit Singh.
Dalbir said she would be meeting Pakistan Punjab governor and would furnish the proof. "I will also meet various human rights activists and mediapersons and show them the evidence that the person who is waiting for death sentence for past 20 years is not Manjit Singh, but Sarabjit Singh," se added.
Earlier, Dalbir Kaur had been claiming that Manjit Singh arrested by Panchkula police was the one in whose place her brother Sarabjit Singh was booked in Pakistan. She had reasoned that during the bomb blasts Manjit Singh arrested by India was present in Pakistan, however, police had not found any such evidence against Manjit Singh except that he was involved in a few fraud cases.
"After all where is Manjit Singh?" she questioned. If Dalbir was excited and nervous at the same time, Sarabjit's wife Sukhpreet Kaur and daughters Poonam and Swapandeep Kaur were disappointed as they didn't get visa to visit Pakistan. "We are hoping to see papa soon since he is innocent," Poonam said.

15 killed in clashes between army, Qaeda in south Yemen

ADEN, Yemen: Heavy clashes between troops and suspected al Qaeda gunmen at the entrance to the southern Yemen city of Zinjibar left 15 people dead, nine of them soldiers, the military and medics said Tuesday.
The fighting erupted when troops advanced on Zinjibar, capital of Abyan province, as they prepared to storm it in a bid to wrest it back from the control of suspected al Qaeda militants, who overran it on May 29.
“Heavy fighting broke out between the army and al Qaeda gunmen when troops advanced towards the city to storm it,” said a military official, giving a toll of nine soldiers dead and at least 10 wounded.
One medic confirmed the toll of soldiers while another said that “Al-Razi hospital in (the nearby town) Jaar received the bodies of six al Qaeda gunmen while four wounded militants were also brought in.”

Yemen strife causes panic in Kerala homes

With fierce gun-battles continuing on the streets of Sana'a, capital of strife-torn Yemen, and its main airport remaining inaccessible to civilians at most times, anxiety has escalated among the families in Kerala of people working there. The attack on Prime Minister Ali Abdullah Saleh and his close associates on June 3 has intensified their fears.
"The only relief is that the telephone networks there are intact despite the deteriorating situation," said Saju, brother of private firm employee Manoj (name changed) in Sana'a, in Thrissur. "I spoke to him even today. He says the streets in the city centre are still filled with protestors and those in the outlying areas are witnessing gun-battles," he said.
Though New Delhi has promised to evacuate all Indians in Yemen, Saju quotes his brother as saying that this is not practically possible in the present circumstances. "It is easy to make statements sitting here. But it seems that the Indian Embassy in Sana'a has not yet given a real picture of the situation there to the Indian Government," Saju said.
Close to 15,000 Indians are working or doing business in Yemen, and most of them are in the Capital itself. According to organizations working for the welfare of Keralites in the Gulf, about 9,000 of these Indians are Malayalees. Most of these Malayalees are said to be well-settled and hate to return home as there is no guarantee that they can go back considering the situation there.

Makkah hotels cash in on Umrah rush

MAKKAH: There has been an unprecedented increase in the occupancy rates of hotels and residential apartments in Makkah this year thanks to the huge inflow of Umrah pilgrims.
Some hotels are fully booked for the peak Umrah season this year, according to an official.
“This tremendous increase was attributed mainly to the coincidence of the peak Umrah season with the annual summer vacation this year,” said Waleed Abu Sabaa, chairman of the Committee for Hotels and Tourism at the Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The turbulent situation in some Arab countries forced many Saudi vacationers to cancel trips abroad.
This would also be a positive factor in boosting the religious tourism industry, Al-Eqtisadiah business daily reported, quoting industry sources.
A huge increase in the inflow of Umrah pilgrims from the Arab and Muslim countries is expected over July and August, corresponding to Shaaban and Ramadan.
The annual summer vacation is scheduled to start by the end of June in most of these countries.

Pending J&K passport cases put on fast track

NEW DELHI: In order to facilitate issuing of passports to applicants of Jammu and Kashmir quickly, the home ministry has asked the external affairs ministry to provide details of pending cases so that it can ask different agencies to expedite their security clearance.
The decision was taken as part of the Centre's confidence building measures in J&K where security clearance has not given to many passports applicants for their relatives' alleged links with militants at any point of time in the violence-hit state.
Instances were brought to the notice of the home ministry that some residents of J&K were finding it difficult to obtain passports due to the antecedents of their parents. In one such case, home secretary G K Pillai intervened when Mubeshirah Qayoom, a resident of Sopore, did not get security clearance as her father had alleged links with a militant organisation.
The home ministry took up the issue with the authorities concerned and the necessary no-objection certification was granted and conveyed to the passport division for issuance of a passport to her.

US defense rests case in Mumbai plot trial

CHICAGO: The defense in the trial of an alleged co-conspirator of the 2008 Mumbai attacks rested its case Monday without the defendant taking to the stand.
Chicago businessman Tahawwur Hussain Rana, 50, is charged with three counts of providing material support to terrorists by acting as a messenger and providing a cover for a key figure in the bloody 60-hour siege of India's largest city in which 166 people died.
David Coleman Headley -- Rana's old friend from military school in Pakistan -- has been cooperating with prosecutors since his 2009 arrest and was the star witness at Rana's trial after admitting his role in the 2008 attacks.
In response to specific questions from Judge Harry Leinenweber, Rana said he was waiving his right to testify in his trial.
The 50-year-old former Pakistani military physician has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Closing arguments will now begin on Tuesday.
"We are optimistic. We don't think the government has proven the case," Rana's attorney Charles Swift told reporters afterwards.

In the meantime, the numerous conflicts and economic and social problems that were already leading Yemen to ever greater disorder and hardship before this year's unrest broke out look certain to remain unaddressed as the political crisis deepens.
All that is of great concern far beyond Yemen's borders, especially by the US government, which had relied on Saleh in battling one of the most active branches of al-Qaida.
Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula has an estimated 300 hard-core members taking sanctuary in Yemen's forbidding mountains, plotting attacks on targets in Europe and the United States while enjoying the protection of tribal chiefs at odds with Saleh's regime.

LONDON: The deadly E. Coli outbreak could have been spread by terrorists, say doctors, who add that rogue groups may have deliberately implanted the killer germ into fresh produce. Though Germany has been the centre of the outbreak, Britain could also be hit as our fruit and vegetable supply is also vulnerable to attack, reports the Daily Star.
The chilling warning comes as German health officials said a toxic batch of bean sprouts are probably behind the latest deadly outbreak. Scientists have warned people to avoid vegetables which are a popular ingredient in Chinese stir fry dishes.
Klaus-Dieter Zastrow, chief doctor for hygiene at Germany's Vivantes Hospital in Berlin, was quoted, as saying: "It is quite possible there's a crazy person out there who thinks: 'I'll kill a few people or make 10,000 ill.' "It is a mistake not to investigate in that direction," he added.

US defense rests case in Mumbai plot trial

CHICAGO: The defense in the trial of an alleged co-conspirator of the 2008 Mumbai attacks rested its case Monday without the defendant taking to the stand.
Chicago businessman Tahawwur Hussain Rana, 50, is charged with three counts of providing material support to terrorists by acting as a messenger and providing a cover for a key figure in the bloody 60-hour siege of India's largest city in which 166 people died.
David Coleman Headley -- Rana's old friend from military school in Pakistan -- has been cooperating with prosecutors since his 2009 arrest and was the star witness at Rana's trial after admitting his role in the 2008 attacks.
In response to specific questions from Judge Harry Leinenweber, Rana said he was waiving his right to testify in his trial.
The 50-year-old former Pakistani military physician has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Closing arguments will now begin on Tuesday.
"We are optimistic. We don't think the government has proven the case," Rana's attorney Charles Swift told reporters afterwards.
Asked if Rana's decision not to testify carried any added significance, Swift said: "Absolutely nothing."

Kashmiri dead or alive? Gilani says yes, US says no

ISLAMABAD: Possibly ending speculation over the death of al-Qaida linked dreaded terrorist Ilyas Kashmiri, Pakistan PM Yousaf Raza Gilani on Sunday said the US has confirmed his killing.
"As far as the death of Ilyas Kashmiri is concerned, America has confirmed that his death occurred on Friday," Gilani told a news conference in Quetta.
However, a top Pentagon official the US has no confirmation that Ilyas Kashmiri has been killed in a US drone attack. "No confirmation," Pentagon spokesman Col Dave Lapan told reporters during his off camera daily briefing when asked about news reports coming from Pakistan that Kashmiri has been killed.
"The department of defence has no confirmation (on the death of Kashmiri)," he noted when told that Pakistan PM Yousaf Raza Gilani said today that the US has confirmed the death of Kashmiri.

Opposition gaining ground in Libya

DUBAI: Libya's opposition militia on Monday made inroads in the town of Yafaran, southwest of the capital, Tripoli, spelling the steady erosion of authority of the regime of Muammar Qadhafi.
Reuters reported quoting its photographer that the town which had been held by pro-Qadhafi forces had fallen to the opposition. “The rebels say that they have taken the town,” said the photographer, Youssef Boudlal. “We are inside the town ... There is no sign of any Qadhafi forces. I can see the rebel flags ... We have seen posters and photos of Qadhafi that have been destroyed,” he said.
Anti-Qadhafi forces have been steadily gaining ground in the mountains west of Tripoli tapering toward the border with Tunisia. Many of the mountain strongholds are populated by Berbers, a distinct group that has been traditionally hostile to the Qadhafi regime.

India-Bangladesh talks begin today

Dhaka: The Foreign Secretaries of India and Bangladesh will hold consultations here on Tuesday. Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao arrived here on Sunday on a two-day visit.
During the talks, all aspects of bilateral relations as well as sub-regional issues will be discussed, said official sources. Ms. Rao's counterpart Mijarul Quayes will lead the home side. It is learnt that Ms. Rao's visit to Dhaka is also aimed at doing the spadework for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's proposed maiden visit to Bangladesh later this year.
Both foreign secretaries will hold a joint press conference on Tuesday at the conclusion of their talks.
Ms. Rao is due to meet the Prime Minister's Economic Affairs Adviser, Dr. Mashiur Rahman, and International Affairs Adviser, Dr. Gowger Rizvi. She will also meet Foreign Minister Dipu Moni and is expected to call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
In New Delhi, the Water Resources Secretaries of the two countries concluded a meeting on Sunday where they discussed water-sharing issues related to the Teesta, Feni, Manu, Muhuri, Khowai, Gumti, Dharla, and Dudhkumar rivers, dredging of the Ichamati river, and bank protection works along common rivers. A joint press release said the meeting has “positively assessed” the developments since the last meeting held in January, 2011.

Shahzad's call record wiped out till 18 days before murder

The call record of slain Pakistani journalist Syed Saleem Shahzad's cellular phone has been erased, with the log of the 18 days before his abduction and murder being wiped out from the system, a media report said today.
The last call made by Shahzad that is reflected in the log was on May 12, seventeen days before his abduction on May 29, according to data obtained by The Express Tribune newspaper.
Hamza Ameer, the brother-in-law of the slain journalist, said he had found Shahzad's mobile phone switched off when he tried to contact him at 5:42 pm on May 29.
Shahzad made his last call, according to the data, on May 12 near a cell phone tower installed atop a bank in Islamabad's Blue Area.
Shahzad, according to the cellular phone data, was in Islamabad between May 1 and May 12.

Saleh family not letting VP take full power: Report

Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh’s family is working to prevent the country’s vice-president from taking full power, while he is in neighbouring Saudi Arabia recovering from chest wounds, said pan-Arab newspaper al-Quds al-Arabi.
Saleh was injured during Friday’s attack on the presidential palace. Saleh’s sons and grandchildren, who occupy important posts in the Yemeni Government, are keeping vice-president Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi from taking control of the presidential palace or the military, the newspaper report said.
Saleh’s eldest son Amad Ali heads the presidential guards — the Military unit closest to Saleh — while his grandsons lead the national police and Army.
The Yemeni leader had three operations in Saudi Capital Riyadh late on Sunday after being injured in a rocket attack in the presidential palace. He intends to return to Yemen in about two weeks after recovering from the surgery, al-Quds al-Arabi reported, citing unnamed Yemeni Government sources.
Surgeons removed shrapnel for Saleh’s chest and repaired nerve damage in Saleh’s neck. A third operation involved plastic surgery, according to the London-based daily. Friday’s attack came after days of deadly street battles in Sana’a between Government forces and fighters loyal to Sheikh Sadiq al-Ahmar, head of the powerful Hashid tribal confederation.

LeT operative David Headley approached ISI to help another co-accused in Mumbai attacks Tahawwur Rana to get back to Pakistan, according to a video recording produced by FBI before a court here on Monday.
Headley used his personal links to favour Rana, FBI agent Jeffrey Parsons said while deposing before the US District Court during the 26/11 trial which resumed after a five day break. Parsons said he had interviewed Pakistani-Canadian Rana with another agent Benabides.
In the video shown in court, Rana said he thought Lashkar-e-Tayyeba does not know Headley is with the ISI.
Parsons also said that Rana mentioned his meeting with Al Qaeda commander Ilyas Kashmiri. He is believed to have been killed in a US drone attack in south Waziristan last week. Rana had served in the Pakistani Army as a doctor. He served in the Gulf War in Saudi Arabia and got injured there and recuperated in Germany.
After that Rana was posted in the glacier region in Pakistan where he declined to go following which he was declared a deserter and was placed on the list of Absent Without Leave (AWOL).

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Monday indirectly acknowledged that the US had provided a list of five top terrorists it wanted, and Pakistan to take action against and said Pakistani soil should not be used for terrorism directed against any country.
“As far as the list is concerned, they (the US) have always had concerns about the (militant) leadership and commanders affiliated with Al Qaeda. “We also have concerns that Pakistani soil should not be used for terrorism,” Gilani told in a news conference in Quetta, the Capital of Balochistan province.
Gilani was responding to a question on whether US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had handed over a list of wanted terrorist leaders during her recent visit to Pakistan.
“If they spoke of any list, naturally there is intelligence-sharing by the ISI... But they must be related to Al Qaeda,” he said.
Reports said that the US list featured the names of Al Qaeda mastermind Ilyas Kashmiri, Ayman al-Zawahiri, Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Omar, commander Siraj Haqqani and Atiya Abdel Rahman, the Libyan operations chief of Al Qaeda.

Ilyas Kashmiri wanted to create Lashkar-e-Osama

Al Qaeda linked terrorist Ilyas Kashmiri was in the process of forming a new terror group called the “Lashkar-e-Osama” for carrying out reprisal attacks to avenge the killing of bin Laden.
The new group was plotting a wave of suicide bombings across Pakistan and to target embassies and diplomats, the Express Tribune newspaper reported on Monday.
Kashmiri, who was reportedly killed in a drone strike on June 3, had convened a special meeting in the Data Khel area of North Waziristan Agency a week ago to constitute the special squad.
The head of the fearsome 313 Brigade of the Harkatul Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI) called a meeting of several Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) commanders to create “Lashkar-e-Osama” which would be tasked with carrying out suicide bombings throughout Pakistan, including some high-profile targets, the daily said quoting reports generated by Pakistani intelligence agencies.

Chicago : Samraz, the wife of Mumbai attacks co-accused Tahawwur Rana, said today that India was her second home and there was no reason her husband would have planned to attack that country.
Refuting LeT operative David Headley's claims that Rana was very close to him and had helped him plot the Mumbai terror attacks of 2008, Samraz said, Headley was just an "Urdu speaking American friend" to her family who had claimed to have reformed following drug addiction issues and arrests.
"India is my second home and my mother is from India. All my relations are from India and they live in Meerut, Ghaziabad and Delhi," Samraz said, asking why would then her husband plot an attack on that country.
Samraz Rana was present in the court room where Rana's lawyers presented their defence, wearing glasses and dressed in a cream-coloured salwar kameez with a yellow dupatta covering her head.
In an interview, she said Headley had been involved in a lot of drug arrests, and had had issues with the FBI and also with his wives.
"The only connection was that Rana and Headley were together in college for three years in Cadet College Abdal Hasan in Pakistan," said Mrs Rana, adding that Headley had "different faces" as shown by him in the court.

The 47-year-old Kashmiri, a former Pakistani army commando on whose head the US had put a price of $5 million, was reportedly killed on June 3 when a drone fired four missiles at a compound in Ghwakhwa in South Waziristan. His outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami confirmed his death in faxed messages to Pakistani TV channels.

Washington : With more evidence emerging about Pakistani establishment's close links with terror groups, the country fits into US standard of State Sponsors of Terrorism (SST) criteria in more than one way which have been designated under this category so far.
The revelations during the ongoing trial of 26/11 suspect Tahawwur Hussein Rana in a Chicago court this past fortnight, and the information that has become public in the aftermath of the killing of Osama bin Laden in a safe house near Islamabad, has provided more evidence than ever to declare Pakistan as SST by the United States, well-informed sources said.
According to the US, State sponsors of terrorism provide critical support to many non-state terrorist groups.
Without state sponsors, these groups would have greater difficulty obtaining the funds, weapons, materials, and secure areas they require to plan and conduct operations.
Till date, the US has designated four countries - Cuba, Iran, Sudan and Syria - as SST for several reasons, including providing physical safe haven and ideological support to members of terrorist organisations that are designated as Foreign Terrorist Organisations by the US (Cuba, Syria, Iran) and for continuing to permit US fugitives to live legally (Cuba).

TRUST Ram Jethmalani to stir a hornet’s nest with his comments. The veteran lawyer and Rajya Sabha MP from the BJP has compared the alleged atrocities committed in Kashmir by the state government and the police with those committed in Nazi Germany.
“ Here they arrest people and keep them in jails for 18 years without any trial. I have not seen such a situation anywhere in the world. Such atrocities against people have not been committed even in Nazi Germany,” the former law minister and Kashmir Committee president said in Srinagar on Monday. He is the first mainstream Indian politician to have alluded to the Nazis in this context.
The Kashmir Committee, formed in 2002 to reach out to local separatist leaders, has been recently revived by Jethmalani.
The committee was on a four- day visit to the Valley. During the visit, they met most of the separatist leaders, including Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Shabir Shah. But JKLF chairman Mohd Yasin Malik and chief minister Omar Abdullah refused to give them an audience.

India plans intelligence-sharing to fight terror

NEW DELHI: India plans to pool data from its security, police and border agencies in an effort to improve its fight against terrorist threats.
The Cabinet’s security committee approved the creation a National Intelligence Grid gathering information in 21 categories such as railways, air travel, bank details, credit card transactions and immigration records.
India has long voiced concern about threats from neighbouring Pakistan. It introduced the intelligence grid after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks blamed on Pakistan-based militants.
The database was cleared Monday after the Home Ministry detailed safeguards against abuses. It will allow law enforcement agencies to share intelligence on everything from visa applications and tax payments to telephone records and property holdings.

Nato hits Qadhafi intelligence HQ

TRIPOLI: Nato air raids targeted the military intelligence headquarters of Moamer Qadhafi’s battered regime on Monday, ahead of a visit to Libya by an envoy from Russia which has raised concerns about the scope of the military campaign.
Royal Air Force Tornado and Typhoon warplanes hit the military intelligence HQ in Tripoli early on Monday, Major General Nick Pope, spokesman for the Chief of Defence Staff, said in London.
“The strike complemented other allied air missions conducted against other key regime targets in Tripoli during the course of last night,” he said in a statement.
The Western military alliance said that its aircraft “delivered precision-guided weapons as part of a campaign which continues to degrade Qadhafi’s ability to commit crimes on his own people.” A Libyan information ministry official said that Nato-led warplanes also hit offices of the state broadcaster but the alliance denied the charge.
“We did not target or hit the Libyan broadcast facilities,” Wing Commander Mike Bracken, the Nato mission spokesman, told AFP. “What we did target was the military intelligence headquarters in downtown Tripoli.” Nato-led warplanes were in the air over the Libyan capital again on Monday evening. US should dissuade Iran from making nukes: study

WASHINGTON: With Iran now largely capable of developing a nuclear weapon, the goal of US policy should be to dissuade it from taking the fateful, next step of making a weapon, urged a study released Tuesday.
And if it fails, the United States should have a strategy worked out to deter a nuclear armed Iran, said the study by the RAND Corporation, which was sponsored by the US Air Force.
“There is still time to dissuade Iran from weaponizing its program,” said Alireza Nader, one of the authors of the report, ‘Iran’s Nuclear Future: Critical US Policy Choices.’ The report reflects a shift in US policy circles over how to deal with Iran as mounting international sanctions on the regime have failed to reverse the direction of its nuclear program.
Calls for military strikes to take out Iran’s nuclear capabilities have faded as the implications for the region have sunk in. Even in Israel, which has long viewed Tehran as an existential threat, comments by a former intelligence chief have exposed doubts about how to deal with the threat.
Further complicating the policy choices facing the United States is the Arab Spring, which may usher in regimes who prefer a softer approach toward Iran in countries that currently host US forces.

Interpol says al Qaeda remains biggest global threat

SINGAPORE: Al Qaeda and groups linked to it remain the world’s biggest security threat despite the killing of Osama bin Laden, the head of Interpol said on Tuesday.
Airlines and other forms of public transport are most at risk, with terrorists using fraudulent passports to travel undetected an area of particular concern, Interpol Secretary General Ronald Noble told reporters on the sidelines of an aviation meeting in Singapore.
“Even before bin Laden was captured and killed, the biggest threat was not only al Qaeda but al Qaeda-affiliated terrorist groups around the world,” he said “I think that remains the biggest threat now as it was before his death.
“The airline and air industry continues to be a prime target for terrorists, but we’ve seen from recovered intelligence etc that they are also focusing a lot on mass transit. But airlines continue to be a special target.”

Czechs release Pakistani terrorism suspect

PRAGUE: Czech authorities have released a Pakistani national held on an international warrant for suspected murder and terrorism after Pakistan failed to apply for his extradition, a regional court prosecutor said on Tuesday.
The police had detained Muhammad Zafar at the end of April when he applied for asylum in the European Union member. Pakistan, which initiated the warrant, had not requested his extradition within the 40-day period dictated by law.
"The prosecutor has a duty to decide to release the detainee and another decision was not possible in the given situation," prosecutor Zbynek Vondra said.

Saudi Arabia bans veggies from Europe amid E. coli scare

JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia has temporarily stopped importing vegetables from European countries to prevent entry of agricultural products contaminated by the E. coli virus.
Minister of Agriculture Fahd Balghunaim said the import ban comes into effect Wednesday, adding that it would continue until the source of the virus becomes clear.
Jabir Al-Shahri, assistant deputy minister for livestock affairs, said the ban was imposed on the basis of information received from the EU, WHO and the European Center for Disease Control.
In a previous statement Balghunaim confirmed that E. coli infected cucumbers that appeared last week in European countries have not entered the Kingdom. “Due to strict measures taken at the ports no infected produce has been allowed to pass into the Saudi market,” Balghunaim said, adding that EU countries are in no way a source for imported produce in the Kingdom.

Iranian navy sends submarines to Red Sea

TEHERAN, Iran — Iran has sent submarines to the Red Sea in the first such deployment by the country’s navy in distant waters, a semi-official news agency reported on Tuesday.
The deployment reflects Iran’s efforts to show off its naval power. Iran has long sought to upgrade its air defence systems and navy to portray itself as a regional military superpower, as well as prepare for any possible future attacks against the country, saying they would most likely be air and sea-based.
The Fars news agency, which is close to Iranian military officials, said the submarines would collect data in international waters and identify warships of other countries.
The report quoted an unnamed government official as saying the submarines accompanied Iranian warships on an anti-piracy route in the Gulf of Aden before they moved into the Red Sea earlier this month. Fars gave no details on the number or capabilities of the submarines.
