Pakistan is a deeply conservative Muslim country, where women, especially in poor, rural areas, enjoy few rights, have little protection from the police and are often treated as commodities by their relatives. The incident happened after neighbour Mohammad Salman grew suspicious that the woman's sons slept with his wife in Neelor Bala village, 100 kilometres (60 miles) north of Islamabad, said police official Akhtar Nawaz. Enraged Salman and his brothers went to confront the suspects, who were identified only as Rashid and Kazim, but they had fled, leaving behind their mother, Nawaz said. "They dragged her out, tore up her clothes and forced her to walk naked on the street," the police official said. "No one has come to lodge a formal complaint. Police registered a case themselves after receiving reports from local residents," he said. An investigation is underway and two people have been taken into custody for questioning, he said. Police investigation officer Shabbir Hussain Shah said the statement of the woman, who is aged about 50, had been recorded. Salman, who works in the eastern city of Lahore, believed that one of the brothers had got his wife pregnant while he was away from home, Shah said. Rights for women in Pakistan are bleak. Village locals in Moza Katchi Shukrani said landlord Pir Buksh unleashed a pack of his dogs on Aliya Bibi. According to Katchi Shukrani resident Khurram, Pir Buksh had a longstanding dispute with Aliya's father Abdullah, the Express Tribune daily reported. "A few years ago he sent a proposal for her hand in marriage but she refused him. Her father also refused the match and ever since Pir Buksh and his sons have been threatening her and her family," he told police officials. On Sunday afternoon, Aliya Bibi was visiting her neighbour's house to borrow some flour when Buksh spotted her and released six of his hunting dogs on her. The dogs chased the woman through streets and attacked her, the report said. Another local resident said Buksh had been threatening her and her family for over a year and everyone knew that she had turned down his proposal because he was already married. Moza Katchi Police Station House Officer (SHO) Razaq Bismillah said that he had questioned several people in the village in this regard. "When we went to Pir Buksh's house to take him in for questioning he had nearly 20 men standing outside with guns. I have called in a larger police contingent to deal with the situation," he said. The ferocious attack by the dogs left the woman with severe wounds to her neck and her chest. I read the Koran every day. Partly to understand some of the things happening in the world, but mainly just because it is immensely instructive,” the Daily Mail quoted Blair, as saying. Blair believes that the knowledge of the faith helps him in his current role as Middle East envoy for the Quartet of the United Nations, United States, European Union and Russia. Blair had earlier praised the Muslim faith as ‘beautiful’ and said the Prophet Mohammed had been ‘an enormously civilizing force’. In 2006 he said the Koran was a reforming book, which extols science and knowledge and abhors superstition. The attack occurred in Ladha area of South Waziristan. The bomb was detonated by remote control and destroyed a vehicle, officials were quoted as saying by TV news channels. The soldiers were on a routine patrol when the convoy was attacked. South Waziristan was one of the main safe havens for the Taliban and AL Qaida elements till the army launched a major offencive in the region in October 2009. However, militants have continued to target security forces in the area. In a separate development, a boys' school in Barawal area of Upper Dir district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province was blown up on Monday, officials said. http://www.dailypioneer.com/345601/Three-Pak-soldiers-killed-in-blast.html ------- Suicide blast kills one in Islamabad Anita Joshua ISLAMABAD: A suicide bomber struck in the federal capital after nearly a year-and-a-half, killing one person and injuring at least six when he was stopped by the security guard of a private bank. But for the timely action of the guard, there would have been more fatalities as the interior of the bank and the commercial plaza where it was located suffered extensive damage. According to the police, the teenaged suicide bomber detonated himself when he was stopped by the guard from entering the bank premises on the periphery of the federal capital. Many vehicles were also damaged. With Saturday night's twin bombings in Peshawar fresh in memory, police cordoned off the area. In Peshawar, it was the second blast which consumed more lives, including that of two journalists and some security personnel. This is the first instance of a suicide blast in Islamabad in 18 months. According to the official sources, a bomb was fitted with a bicycle, which was parked some 50 feet away from Regional National Accountability Bureau (NAB) office, which exploded with a big bang. Resultantly, two men, including a shepherd, sustained injuries while eight sheep died on the spot. Officials of Police and Frontier Crops rushed to the spot soon after the explosion and cordoned off the area. Zar Ajam, a Pakistani, has been given the death penalty along with his Afghan facilitator Matiullah, chief court administrator Abdul Malik Kamawi said. The attack was one of the most brutal Taliban attacks in nearly 10 years of war in Afghanistan. President Hamid Karzai must confirm the death sentence. But the Afghan leader has already said Ajam should hang for his crime. Video footage from inside the bank branch on the day of the attack showed the gunman walking in wearing a policeman's uniform. Ajam has shown no remorse for his crime. In a recent interview with the BBC, he said he would kill others if given the chance. Headley will testify in any future prosecutions of fugitive masterminds such as al-Qaeda chief Ilyas Kashmiri and LeT's Sajid Mir, who is charged with a lead role in the Mumbai plot, Propublica.Com quoted US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald as saying. Headley, a Pakistani-American, was the star witness in the recently concluded trial if Tahawwur Husain Rana, who was convicted by a Chicago court on two counts of terrorism related charges – participating in the conspiracy of terror attacks in Denmark and providing material support to Lashkar-e-Taiba. Rana, 50, however, was found not guilty on charges related to the Mumbai terrorist attacks. He now faces a maximum jail sentence up to 30 years. "Fitzgerald declined to discuss details of the case such as the politically sensitive decision to indict a suspected ISI officer who served as Headley's handler and is known only as Major Iqbal," ProPublica said. At a news conference in Chicago last week, Fitzgerald vowed to bring the other six Pak-based defendants to justice who have been named in the indictment filed by federal prosecutors before the court. The gang, led by a Burmese man with the help of overstaying Yemeni workers, had a filling center in the Tandbawi neighborhood, chief of the municipal team inspecting herbal and illegal medications and food items Fahd Al-Asiri said on Monday. The secret filling center was raided while its workers were filling plastic cans with Zamzam water in an unhygienic manner, Al-Asiri said. The official said his inspectors were secretly monitoring the gang for many days and finally pinpointed the exact location where they had been operating. “In our raid we discovered six barrels each containing 1,000 liters in addition to a huge 4,000-liter container filled with Zamzam water. Since the gang’s location was not far from our office, they could easily have taken precautions when our inspectors approached their place,” he said. He added that the gang collected Zamzam water from a supply center in Kudai and brought it to their filling center. Then they refilled them in half-liter cans, packed them and put a nylon sticker on each of them to identify it as the holy water without giving any details of who packed them. Then they were sold to foreign pilgrims for SR55 each. The inspectors also discovered after tests that the water they packed contained bacteria. He was kept in detention for almost an hour. Express 24/7 correspondent Muhammad Kazim reported that Jamal Tarkae, the cameraman who was detained by the police claimed he was taken to the Kharotabad police station. Tarkae said that the police “misbehaved” with him. On Monday night, the police beat up the police surgeon who testified against them in court. Police surgeon Dr Baqir Shah claimed he was targeted for vengeance. The doctor was visiting a restaurant on Prince Road when up to 10 people pulled up outside and dragged the surgeon out. As the men tried to drag the doctor away to their vehicles, he put up resistance, upon which the men beat him up. The Pakistan Army's spokesman told that DG Rangers has been removed on the orders of the SC in the case of youth killing involving Rangers in Karachi. He will be removed within three days and transferred to another department, spokesman added. Earlier, the SC took suo moto notice of cold blooded killing of young man by Rangers in Karachi and summoned DG Rangers Sindh, provincial Chief Secretary, IGP Sindh and Provincial and Federal Home Secretaries. The SC then ordered to remove DG Rangers Maj Gen Ejaz Chaudhry and IG Sindh Fayyaz Laghari while Six Rangers personnel and seven others involved in the extrajudicial killing were remanded into police custody for 15 days. The United Arab Emirates, which recognized the council a day earlier, gave Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi's ambassador 72 hours to leave. In Amman, Mustafa Abdul Jalil, head of the transitional government, met Jordan's King Abdallah, who promised continued "humanitarian, medical and logistical aid to the Libyan people.” The Libyan leader briefed the monarch on the latest developments in his country, a statement from the Royal Court said. Jordan recently recognized the TNC as a "legitimate representative" of the Libyan people. Germany's recognition, voiced by Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle on a visit here, is significant because Germany has been reluctant to be drawn into the Libyan conflict and opted out of NATO military action. This is the fourth time that the trial judge of the concerned Rawalpindi court has been transferred in the past two years. The judge, Rana Nisar Ahmed, hearing the case since November 2010, was transferred from the Rawalpindi court to the Shankargarh court in Punjab province of Pakistan on Saturday. The Rawalpindi court has been hearing the Mumbai terror attack case against seven accused – Lashkar commanders Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, Zarar Shah, Abu-al-Qama and others – since 2009. Before Ahmed, three other judges of the same court had been transferred forcing the case to drag on without any conclusion in sight. The matter is being delayed despite India asking Pakistan time and again to bring the 26/11 perpetrators to justice at the earliest. The training, imparted in a two-storey ISI safe house in Lahore, was not like the James Bond style, but focussed on ways to camouflage his identity and earn the confidence of Indians he was going to use. The move comes as Washington prepares to start pulling out its 97,000 troops in Afghanistan next month as part of a process to hand over all combat operations against Taliban insurgents to Afghan security forces by 2014. The images broadcast late on Sunday showed the chess game between Gaddafi and FIDE president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov being watched by the Libyan leader's eldest son Muhammad. Gaddafi, who was last seen in public when was shown on TV welcoming South African president Jacob Zuma to Tripoli on May 30, wore a brown cloak and dark sunglasses. The television did not say where the chessboard meeting took place but Ilyumzhinov told Russia's Interfax news agency that he had played against Gaddafi in Tripoli on Sunday. The Russian eccentric who once claimed he hosted extraterrestrials, also sat down for a game of chess with Gaddafi's son Muhammad and the two played the Sicilian defence, Interfax said. Six months ago he was a Taliban commander. Now he and 10 of his followers are in the process of becoming police officers and get regular salaries. In the meantime, however, Hazrat is raising money the same way he did as a Taliban commander, by imposing an " Islamic tax" on people in his district. "The government is telling me to fight the Taliban and protect your area so we must ask people for help in order to take care of myself and my friends," he said. He and other militiamen who hope to join the police, a group known as arbakai, insist that people give the money voluntarily. Judging by the public outcry, however, the donors see things differently. They are often forced to hand over a tenth of their earnings, just as they were when the Taliban ran things. Known by its Turkish initials as the AK Party, it secured 50 per cent of the vote — the highest since it began contesting elections in 2002. But despite its strong showing, the AKP got only 326 seats in the 550-member Parliament. In the 2007 elections, it had won 341 seats despite fewer people voting for it. The AKP is short of the “super majority” of 367, which would have allowed the new administration to go ahead with constitutional changes on its own. He also said Saudi authorities had not responded to Tunisian requests to hand over the former president. Ben Ali fled Tunisia in January following a revolt against his 23-year rule and is thought to be in Saudi Arabia. Family members say he suffered a stroke in February and he has made no public appearances. Tunisia's new authorities are preparing to try him and his wife Leila Trabelsi on drugs, guns and graft charges in absentia. Tunisian authorities have said the first charges will relate to the discovery of cash, weapons and drugs in presidential palaces, including almost two kilogrammes (4.4 pounds) of narcotics, thought to be cannabis, and $27 million in cash. These finds form the basis of only two of the dozens of ongoing inquiries into the first couple, their family and the regime's former ministers and officials. The man, identified as Defendant No. 3 and who is being tried alongside 10 other men at a Riyadh court, said Mustafa Abul Qadir Al-Ansari was not an obedient son. The defendant said his brother once called from the town of Al-Muasem in Jazan and asked him to collect his ID card and clean clothes from his mother in Makkah. Instead, he told the court, he collected Al-Ansari and brought him back to see his mother who was constantly in tears. “When I took him in my car from Jazan to Makkah, I had no idea that I was carrying a time bomb that would later explode in the family. The father died, the children became orphans, many members of the family were put in jail and their wives asked for a divorce,” he said. Al-Ansari was one of the four men who carried out the heinous attacks before being killed by security forces. The others included his brother Ayman Abdul Qadir Al-Ansari, their nephew Samir Sulaiman Al-Ansari and his brother Sami Sulaiman Al-Ansari. The 11 men currently on trial in the capital are all members of the same family and were also related to the attackers. The man, detained on Sunday in a development that could strain Israel’s relations with Egypt’s new leaders, was identified by the Egyptian MENA news agency as Ilan Chaim Grabel, a misspelling of his family name, Grapel. The Israeli ambassador to Cairo said on Monday that Israel was looking into the case. The US embassy in the Egyptian capital said it was working to confirm Grapel’s identity and citizenship. In his Facebook page, Grapel made no secret of his presence in Egypt, writing that he was “preaching at Al-Azhar,” an Islamic university in Cairo, and that he had studied at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.
