Pakistan is a deeply conservative Muslim country, where women, especially in poor, rural areas, enjoy few rights, have little protection from the police and are often treated as commodities by their relatives. The incident happened after neighbour Mohammad Salman grew suspicious that the woman's sons slept with his wife in Neelor Bala village, 100 kilometres (60 miles) north of Islamabad, said police official Akhtar Nawaz. Enraged Salman and his brothers went to confront the suspects, who were identified only as Rashid and Kazim, but they had fled, leaving behind their mother, Nawaz said. "They dragged her out, tore up her clothes and forced her to walk naked on the street," the police official said. "No one has come to lodge a formal complaint. Police registered a case themselves after receiving reports from local residents," he said. An investigation is underway and two people have been taken into custody for questioning, he said. Police investigation officer Shabbir Hussain Shah said the statement of the woman, who is aged about 50, had been recorded. Salman, who works in the eastern city of Lahore, believed that one of the brothers had got his wife pregnant while he was away from home, Shah said. Rights for women in Pakistan are bleak. The nation still remains without a domestic violence law, pending objections from a hardline Islamic party. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/pakistan/Mother-paraded-naked-in-Pakistani-village-Police/articleshow/8848386.cms ------- Spurned Pak landlord unleashes dogs on woman for rejecting Marriage Proposal Jun 14, 2011 ISLAMABAD: A woman was seriously injured and slipped into coma in Pakistan's Punjab province after her landlord unleashed his hunting dogs on her for rejecting his marriage proposal. Village locals in Moza Katchi Shukrani said landlord Pir Buksh unleashed a pack of his dogs on Aliya Bibi. According to Katchi Shukrani resident Khurram, Pir Buksh had a longstanding dispute with Aliya's father Abdullah, the Express Tribune daily reported. "A few years ago he sent a proposal for her hand in marriage but she refused him. Her father also refused the match and ever since Pir Buksh and his sons have been threatening her and her family," he told police officials. On Sunday afternoon, Aliya Bibi was visiting her neighbour's house to borrow some flour when Buksh spotted her and released six of his hunting dogs on her. The dogs chased the woman through streets and attacked her, the report said. Another local resident said Buksh had been threatening her and her family for over a year and everyone knew that she had turned down his proposal because he was already married. Moza Katchi Police Station House Officer (SHO) Razaq Bismillah said that he had questioned several people in the village in this regard. "When we went to Pir Buksh's house to take him in for questioning he had nearly 20 men standing outside with guns. I have called in a larger police contingent to deal with the situation," he said. The ferocious attack by the dogs left the woman with severe wounds to her neck and her chest. Bibi is currently in coma in the THQ hospital and doctors have deemed her condition to be critical. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/pakistan/Spurned-Pak-landlord-unleashes-dogs-on-woman/articleshow/8844510.cms ------- Tony Blair reads the Koran daily to stay 'faith literate' Jun 14, 2011, London : Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair has said that he reads Islam’s holy book, the ‘Koran’ every day as it keeps him ''faith literate''. “To be faith-literate is crucial in a globalize world, I believe. I read the Koran every day. Partly to understand some of the things happening in the world, but mainly just because it is immensely instructive,” the Daily Mail quoted Blair, as saying. Blair believes that the knowledge of the faith helps him in his current role as Middle East envoy for the Quartet of the United Nations, United States, European Union and Russia. Blair had earlier praised the Muslim faith as ‘beautiful’ and said the Prophet Mohammed had been ‘an enormously civilizing force’. In 2006 he said the Koran was a reforming book, which extols science and knowledge and abhors superstition. He had added that the Koran is practical and way ahead of its time in attitudes to marriage, women and governance. http://www.indianexpress.com/story-print/803035/ ------- Three Pak soldiers killed in blast June 14, 2011 Three Pakistani soldiers were killed and four others injured when a military convoy was targeted with a roadside bomb in the restive South Waziristan tribal region on Monday. The attack occurred in Ladha area of South Waziristan. The bomb was detonated by remote control and destroyed a vehicle, officials were quoted as saying by TV news channels. The soldiers were on a routine patrol when the convoy was attacked. South Waziristan was one of the main safe havens for the Taliban and AL Qaida elements till the army launched a major offencive in the region in October 2009. However, militants have continued to target security forces in the area. In a separate development, a boys' school in Barawal area of Upper Dir district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province was blown up on Monday, officials said. http://www.dailypioneer.com/345601/Three-Pak-soldiers-killed-in-blast.html ------- Suicide blast kills one in Islamabad Anita Joshua ISLAMABAD: A suicide bomber struck in the federal capital after nearly a year-and-a-half, killing one person and injuring at least six when he was stopped by the security guard of a private bank. But for the timely action of the guard, there would have been more fatalities as the interior of the bank and the commercial plaza where it was located suffered extensive damage. According to the police, the teenaged suicide bomber detonated himself when he was stopped by the guard from entering the bank premises on the periphery of the federal capital. Many vehicles were also damaged. With Saturday night's twin bombings in Peshawar fresh in memory, police cordoned off the area. In Peshawar, it was the second blast which consumed more lives, including that of two journalists and some security personnel. This is the first instance of a suicide blast in Islamabad in 18 months. On Sunday, three people were injured in a minor blast on the outskirts of the capital and the city had been rocked by a couple of loud unexplained explosions that caused no injury in April 2010. http://www.hindu.com/2011/06/14/stories/2011061456961400.htm ------- One killed in Quetta blast Jun 14, 2011 QUETTA: A man was killed and another sustained splinter wounds in an explosion near NAB office in Shara-e-Gulistan area, a sensitive area of the provincial capital, on Monday. Zar Ajam, a Pakistani, has been given the death penalty along with his Afghan facilitator Matiullah, chief court administrator Abdul Malik Kamawi said. The attack was one of the most brutal Taliban attacks in nearly 10 years of war in Afghanistan. President Hamid Karzai must confirm the death sentence. But the Afghan leader has already said Ajam should hang for his crime. Video footage from inside the bank branch on the day of the attack showed the gunman walking in wearing a policeman's uniform. Ajam has shown no remorse for his crime. In a recent interview with the BBC, he said he would kill others if given the chance. Matiullah was found guilty of providing accommodation to Ajam, an official said. http://www.thedailystar.net/newDesign/latest_news.php?nid=30314 ------- Headley to testify against Illyas Kashmiri and Sajid Mir Jun 14, 2011 David Headley, who has pleaded guilty to charges of his involvement in the Mumbai terror attacks, would testify against his Pakistani handlers, Illyas Kashmiri and Sajid Mir, a US attorney has said. Headley will testify in any future prosecutions of fugitive masterminds such as al-Qaeda chief Ilyas Kashmiri and LeT's Sajid Mir, who is charged with a lead role in the Mumbai plot, Propublica.Com quoted US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald as saying. Headley, a Pakistani-American, was the star witness in the recently concluded trial if Tahawwur Husain Rana, who was convicted by a Chicago court on two counts of terrorism related charges – participating in the conspiracy of terror attacks in Denmark and providing material support to Lashkar-e-Taiba. Rana, 50, however, was found not guilty on charges related to the Mumbai terrorist attacks. He now faces a maximum jail sentence up to 30 years. "Fitzgerald declined to discuss details of the case such as the politically sensitive decision to indict a suspected ISI officer who served as Headley's handler and is known only as Major Iqbal," ProPublica said. At a news conference in Chicago last week, Fitzgerald vowed to bring the other six Pak-based defendants to justice who have been named in the indictment filed by federal prosecutors before the court. The gang, led by a Burmese man with the help of overstaying Yemeni workers, had a filling center in the Tandbawi neighborhood, chief of the municipal team inspecting herbal and illegal medications and food items Fahd Al-Asiri said on Monday. The secret filling center was raided while its workers were filling plastic cans with Zamzam water in an unhygienic manner, Al-Asiri said. The official said his inspectors were secretly monitoring the gang for many days and finally pinpointed the exact location where they had been operating. “In our raid we discovered six barrels each containing 1,000 liters in addition to a huge 4,000-liter container filled with Zamzam water. Since the gang’s location was not far from our office, they could easily have taken precautions when our inspectors approached their place,” he said. He added that the gang collected Zamzam water from a supply center in Kudai and brought it to their filling center. Then they refilled them in half-liter cans, packed them and put a nylon sticker on each of them to identify it as the holy water without giving any details of who packed them. Then they were sold to foreign pilgrims for SR55 each. The inspectors also discovered after tests that the water they packed contained bacteria. However the official said he did not detect any evidence to establish that ordinary water was mixed with Zamzam. http://arabnews.com/saudiarabia/article454141.ece ------- Cameraman released from custody: Pakistan June 14, 2011 QUETTA: Quetta police released on Tuedsay the cameraman who filmed the killing of unarmed foreigners by security forces in Kharotabad. The United Arab Emirates, which recognized the council a day earlier, gave Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi's ambassador 72 hours to leave. In Amman, Mustafa Abdul Jalil, head of the transitional government, met Jordan's King Abdallah, who promised continued "humanitarian, medical and logistical aid to the Libyan people.” The Libyan leader briefed the monarch on the latest developments in his country, a statement from the Royal Court said. Jordan recently recognized the TNC as a "legitimate representative" of the Libyan people. Germany's recognition, voiced by Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle on a visit here, is significant because Germany has been reluctant to be drawn into the Libyan conflict and opted out of NATO military action. Rao's meeting with her counterpart Salman Bashir will cap the slew of engagements between the two countries in recent months, before the yet-to-be-appointed Pakistani foreign minister visits India by July as envisaged by the agreed outcome at the meeting between the two foreign secretaries in Thimphu earlier this year. In Thimphu, the two sides had agreed to hold discussions on all issues before the visit by Pakistan's foreign minister. This included Jammu and Kashmir which, according to many Indian experts, compromised India's ability to put the issue of terrorism upfront in any dialogue with Pakistan. This is the fourth time that the trial judge of the concerned Rawalpindi court has been transferred in the past two years. The judge, Rana Nisar Ahmed, hearing the case since November 2010, was transferred from the Rawalpindi court to the Shankargarh court in Punjab province of Pakistan on Saturday. The Rawalpindi court has been hearing the Mumbai terror attack case against seven accused – Lashkar commanders Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, Zarar Shah, Abu-al-Qama and others – since 2009. Before Ahmed, three other judges of the same court had been transferred forcing the case to drag on without any conclusion in sight. The matter is being delayed despite India asking Pakistan time and again to bring the 26/11 perpetrators to justice at the earliest. "That could be the only sign of Pakistan showing its earnestness in fighting terrorism," said an official. The training, imparted in a two-storey ISI safe house in Lahore, was not like the James Bond style, but focussed on ways to camouflage his identity and earn the confidence of Indians he was going to use. Headley, a Pakistani-American, was initially imparted training by terror outfit Lashkar-e-Tayyeba (LeT) for conducting reconnaissance for Mumbai attacks but his handler Major Iqbal of ISI was dissatisfied with it, following which advanced training was given to him by Iqbal and several Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) of the spy agency. External affairs minister SM Krishna, however, ruled out India's intervention in Pakistani-Canadian Tahawwur Rana's case, saying, "We cannot interfere in the legal process of another country. "As far as India is concerned, we have got very important evidence, assessments and statements on oath that makes a world of difference. Rana has gone and appeared in a court in Chicago on his own. Tensions between non-Arab Iran and its Gulf Arab neighbors have risen after Tehran objected to the deployment of Saudi and UAE troops to Bahrain in March to help crush an uprising by mostly Shiite Muslims against the kingdom’s Sunni rulers, and a spying row. In excerpts of an interview with Al-Arabiya television, broadcast on Monday, Elaraby said he had communicated Egypt’s views with “frankness and clarity” on security in the Gulf region to his Iranian counterpart. “Egypt does not accept the intervention by any state in the internal affairs of another state,” Elaraby said. Six months ago he was a Taliban commander. Now he and 10 of his followers are in the process of becoming police officers and get regular salaries. In the meantime, however, Hazrat is raising money the same way he did as a Taliban commander, by imposing an " Islamic tax" on people in his district. "The government is telling me to fight the Taliban and protect your area so we must ask people for help in order to take care of myself and my friends," he said. He and other militiamen who hope to join the police, a group known as arbakai, insist that people give the money voluntarily. Judging by the public outcry, however, the donors see things differently. They are often forced to hand over a tenth of their earnings, just as they were when the Taliban ran things. In Kunduz, where the police training program has been on, radio talk shows are flooded by angry callers complaining about arbakai militias, meetings of elders have denounced their behaviour, and even provincial government officials have expressed concern. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/south-asia/After-Taliban-police-recruits-imposing-Islamic-tax-in-Afghanistan/articleshow/8844456.cms ------- Erdogan remains at the helm in Turkey Atul Aneja But short of “super majority” to rewrite Constitution DUBAI: Turkey's ruling Justice and Development party led by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan won Sunday's parliamentary election by a wide margin but fell short of a “super majority” that would have allowed it to rewrite the Constitution. Known by its Turkish initials as the AK Party, it secured 50 per cent of the vote — the highest since it began contesting elections in 2002. But despite its strong showing, the AKP got only 326 seats in the 550-member Parliament. In the 2007 elections, it had won 341 seats despite fewer people voting for it. The AKP is short of the “super majority” of 367, which would have allowed the new administration to go ahead with constitutional changes on its own. The AKP also narrowly missed achieving the 330 mark, which would have enabled the government to directly put its proposals to vote in a national referendum. Under the plan, tribesmen have been urged to form 'laskhars' or militias to take out "hard-core al-Qaeda elements and their affiliates" who have challenged the writ of the state by mounting terrorist attacks inside Pakistan, The Express Tribune newspaper quoted its sources as saying. The idea was discussed in the June 9 meeting of the army's Corps Commanders and taken up during army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani's talks with CIA chief Leon Panetta the following day, an unnamed military official told the daily. The pirates had taken the crew members, including Egyptians and a Sri Lankan, hostage after capturing the vessel MV Suez last year and demanded USD 2.1 million for their release. The ship belongs to an Egyptian company. Burney, who negotiated with the pirates and raised money through donations, said in Karachi that all hostages had been freed. He said they would reach their homes in a few days as arrangements are being made for their repatriation. It was the first time that King Abdullah II has made such a concession to Jordanians, who have taken to the streets during six months of pro-democracy protests to demand a greater political say in this key US Arab ally. Many Jordanians want the king to loosen his absolute grip on power, which includes appointing prime ministers and Cabinets. The Defence Ministry, on its part, has carried out a detailed review of the situation and instructed the Army to be “extremely cautious” in its conduct and guard against provoking the local population. The heightened worry is being sourced to inputs that even the slightest provocation could be used to mobilise popular protest, using recent developments in West Asia as a model. Sources said that orders have gone to the Northern Command to prioritise minimising collateral damage in any operation; in case of an incident, bring out the facts in public domain as soon as possible to avoid misinformation; be less visible to the public and let the police and paramilitary forces take the lead in public dealings. Full report at: http://www.indianexpress.com/story-print/803343/ ------- Trial of ousted Tunisia leader Ben Ali to start June 20: PM Jun 14, 2011 TUNIS: The trial in absentia of ousted Tunisian strongman Zine el Abidine Ben Ali, in exile in Saudi Arabia, will start on June 20, interim Prime Minister Beji Caid Essebsi told Al-Jazeera on Monday. "I am announcing it for the first time, the trial will start on the 20th" of June, Essebsi told the television channel, adding that Ben Ali and his associates were facing more than 90 charges. He also said Saudi authorities had not responded to Tunisian requests to hand over the former president. Ben Ali fled Tunisia in January following a revolt against his 23-year rule and is thought to be in Saudi Arabia. Family members say he suffered a stroke in February and he has made no public appearances. Tunisia's new authorities are preparing to try him and his wife Leila Trabelsi on drugs, guns and graft charges in absentia. Tunisian authorities have said the first charges will relate to the discovery of cash, weapons and drugs in presidential palaces, including almost two kilogrammes (4.4 pounds) of narcotics, thought to be cannabis, and $27 million in cash. These finds form the basis of only two of the dozens of ongoing inquiries into the first couple, their family and the regime's former ministers and officials. Authorities have said they are also looking into cases of murder, abuse of power, trafficking of archaeological artifacts and money laundering. In a statement released by his French lawyer, Ben Ali has slammed the trial as a "masquerade". Tunisia's interim administration has demanded the former president's extradition from Saudi Arabia along with his wife, and several European countries have frozen assets belonging to Ben Ali and his entourage. The Tunisian revolution was the first and so far the most successful of a string of uprisings against autocratic rulers in the Middle East and north Africa which have come to be known as the Arab Spring. Egypt also began a programme of democratic reform after the fall of Hosni Mubarak, but Libya and Yemen have fallen into civil conflict and pro-democracy protests in Bahrain and Syria face brutal repression. As an act of faith to restore relations with Pakistan, US intelligence in recent weeks shared the location of two such compounds in Pakistan’s tribal areas. But by the time authorities reached the facilities, they had been vacated, Gates said. The soon-to-retire Pentagon chief said he was not certain how or why the effort went awry. He said “’there was clearly disappointment on our part.” Others have raised the possibility that Pakistan’s intelligence service had tipped off the militants. http://www.dawn.com/2011/06/14/us-disappointed-by-failed-raids-in-pakistan-gates.html ------- Joint management of water proposed with Afghanistan By Khaleeq Kiani Sources told Dawn on Monday that the lending agency that had brokered Pak-India treaty and later helped Pakistan in development of Mangla and Tarbela dams has already done necessary work, including arrangement of about $12 million from five other lenders to finance at least four technical studies and the negotiation process. – File Photo by AFP ISLAMABAD: The World Bank has offered finances and services as an ‘honest broker’ to help Pakistan and Afghanistan in joint water management under a bilateral treaty on the pattern of Pak-India Indus Waters Treaty of 1960. Saleh, forced to seek medical treatment in Saudi Arabia for wounds suffered in an attack on his palace earlier this month, has refused to leave office despite nearly six months of street protests and several diplomatic attempts to remove him. Fresh clashes broke out in the southern province of Taiz on Monday after the army advanced on militants who attacked them and destroyed several armored vehicles, a local official said. The man, identified as Defendant No. 3 and who is being tried alongside 10 other men at a Riyadh court, said Mustafa Abul Qadir Al-Ansari was not an obedient son. The defendant said his brother once called from the town of Al-Muasem in Jazan and asked him to collect his ID card and clean clothes from his mother in Makkah. Instead, he told the court, he collected Al-Ansari and brought him back to see his mother who was constantly in tears. “When I took him in my car from Jazan to Makkah, I had no idea that I was carrying a time bomb that would later explode in the family. The father died, the children became orphans, many members of the family were put in jail and their wives asked for a divorce,” he said. Al-Ansari was one of the four men who carried out the heinous attacks before being killed by security forces. The others included his brother Ayman Abdul Qadir Al-Ansari, their nephew Samir Sulaiman Al-Ansari and his brother Sami Sulaiman Al-Ansari. The 11 men currently on trial in the capital are all members of the same family and were also related to the attackers. Six weeks after US special forces killed Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in Pakistan, and as budget pressures intensify at home, support is growing in Washington for an aggressive move to curtail the US role in Afghanistan. Despite record violence, US commanders are hailing major advances in wresting territory away from a dogged Taleban insurgency. The White House is waiting for Afghanistan commander General David Petraeus to deliver his recommendations on how many troops to withdraw starting in July. Lebanon has announced a new cabinet led by Prime Minister Najib Mikati, nearly five months after he was nominated. The country has been without a functioning government since January, when Hezbollah and its allies toppled the coalition of pro-Western Prime Minister Saad Hariri. The new cabinet gives the powerful Shia group and its allies 16 of 30 seats, up from 10 previously, reports say. But Mr Mikati has vowed that his cabinet will represent all Lebanese. "Do not judge intentions and people, but rather actions," he said during a televised news conference. "Although I try to avoid it, I glimpse a film clip, a scene, of people throwing themselves from a burning tower, people who deserved better protection from their country, from me and the men I worked with, and I hear the sounds of the lobby in the [World Trade Center] on tape," said the man, whose alter ego chosen by the government appears to be paying homage to the flawed Marvel Comics superhero. "To me, the sights and sounds, the smoke of that day are not yet history. They are a knot, a silence, a facial tick, a missing friend in Iraq. They are not history yet." Efforts to broker an exit for Saleh — forced to seek treatment in Riyadh for wounds suffered in an attack on his palace ten days ago — after months of protests against him and a round of open warfare in the capital were deadlocked. Political paralysis and long-standing conflicts with insurgents, separatists and rebel tribesmen have fanned Western and regional fears of Yemen collapsing into chaos and giving Al-Qaeda a stronghold alongside oil shipping routes. Those conflicts flared anew in two of Yemen’s southern provinces, including one whose capital has fallen to militants and ushered in a round of fighting that has driven most of its population to flight. The official newspaper of Saleh’s party said several people suspected of involvement in an attempt to kill him had been arrested and were being questioned, in an apparent reference to the attack that wounded Saleh and members of his cabinet. The man, detained on Sunday in a development that could strain Israel’s relations with Egypt’s new leaders, was identified by the Egyptian MENA news agency as Ilan Chaim Grabel, a misspelling of his family name, Grapel. The Israeli ambassador to Cairo said on Monday that Israel was looking into the case. The US embassy in the Egyptian capital said it was working to confirm Grapel’s identity and citizenship. In his Facebook page, Grapel made no secret of his presence in Egypt, writing that he was “preaching at Al-Azhar,” an Islamic university in Cairo, and that he had studied at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. The reference to Al-Azhar later disappeared from the page. The action came in response to a complaint from Turkey’s Directorate of Telecommunications, whose website was taken down on Thursday as part of a protest against what Anonymous says is government censorship of the Internet. Turkey, whose ruling AK Party won a parliamentary vote on Sunday, plans to introduce a new Internet filtering system in August, under which users will have to sign up for one of four filters — domestic, family, children and standard. Anonymous, a loose activist collective which has attacked many websites including those of Amazon and Mastercard in the name of Internet freedom, says the system will make it possible to keep records of people’s online activity. Eight of the 32 suspected cyberactivists detained on Sunday were minors, Anatolian said. Lebanon Prime Minister Najib Mikati announced a new Cabinet dominated by the militant group and its allies after the country has operated for five months without a functioning government. The move caps Hezbollah’s steady rise over decades from resistance group against Israel to Lebanon’s most powerful military and political force. Opponents of Hezbollah — which the US considers a terrorist organization — say having it in control of Lebanon’s government could lead to international isolation. The group’s most ardent supporters are Iran and Syria, which dominated Lebanon for 29 years.
