Islamic reformists win Malaysian party poll, change seen

The Pan Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) broke with a decades-old tradition to vote in non-clerics to a slew of top posts, which could soften the party's image as a stern moralist bent on establishing an Islamic state.
PAS is the largest party in opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's coalition but its resolve to impose Islamic criminal laws has often been seen as a stumbling block in its bid to win over non-Muslims, who make up more than a third of the population.
Husam Musa, who has pushed to moderate the PAS stance on a theocratic state, won one of the three vice-president posts and vowed to reach out to non-Muslim minorities.
"Muslims and non-Muslims want the same thing, a team of PAS leaders who can perform and offer fair and appropriate policies for a multi-racial Malaysia," said Husam.
Party grassroots activist Mohamad Sabu, 56, won the deputy presidency, defeating the conservative incumbent and another cleric to become the likely successor to the party's conservative president, Abdul Hadi Awang, who was returned unopposed.
More than 1,000 party delegates -- men in white skullcaps and women in headscarves, seated in separate sections of an assembly hall -- erupted in loud cheers of "Allahu Akbar" (God is Greatest) as the results were announced.
"This slate of reformers were voted in at a time when Anwar is facing increasing attacks by the ruling coalition, and it means that PAS will step in to make a bigger contribution to the opposition ahead of the general election," said Bridget Welsh, a Malaysia specialist at Singapore Management University.
Anwar is fighting accusations that he sodomised a former male aide and more recently, that he was caught on film having sex with an unidentified woman, providing ammunition to Prime Minister Najib Razak's government as it seeks to discredit the opposition after it posted strong wins in a recent state poll.
Sodomy is an offence in the mainly Muslim country and Islam also frowns on extra-marital sex.
Anwar has painted the charges as a government attempt to undermine the opposition but the allegations could hurt his reputation in the eyes of conservative Muslims.
"The ulama (clerics) are good teachers but now we need a different team who can bring PAS to victory in the general election and take power," said Muhammad Khalil Idrus, 34, a clerk at a construction company and PAS member.
PAS holds 23 of 222 seats in parliament and is the largest opposition party with about a million members. The ruling coalition has tried for years to persuade it to abandon the opposition but PAS has repeatedly rejected the offer.
Prime Minister Najib's United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) is the other party which commands the backing of the country's Malay Muslims, who form 55 percent of the country's population of 28 million.
Najib does not have to call a general election until 2013 but strong economic growth and an opposition weakened by Anwar's legal troubles have fuelled speculation that he may call snap polls early next year.

PESHAWAR: Pakistani security forces killed 26 Islamist militants believed to have crossed over from Afghanistan on Saturday in the fourth day of fighting close to the border, police said, highlighting the region's instability along the frontier 10 years after the US-led invasion of Afghanistan.
Police officer Bahadur Khan said the insurgents crossed over into Upper Dir from Afghanistan's Kunar province and opened fire on troops. They returned fire, killing 26 of the attackers, he said, adding troops suffered no casualties. It was not possible to independently verify his accounts, and a militant spokesman denied early claims by police of significant casualties.
Upper Dir has seen fighting since Wednesday, when dozens, possibly hundreds, of insurgents attacked a security post and killed 25 personnel and five civilians. The clashes forced many residents to flee. Although militants often target security forces, they have rarely launched such attacks from Afghanistan.
Pakistan shares a long, porous border with Afghanistan and it has asked Kabul to take steps to stop any such future attacks from there.
Pakistani intelligence officials said Friday night's drone attack in South Waziristan killed nine people, up from the figure of five reported soon after the strike. They said they were trying to identify the victims in the attack on a large compound.
The BBC quoted local people as saying Kashmiri was among the dead.
Kashmiri is one of Pakistan's most wanted militants and has been linked to several of the country's largest attacks. Some reports have linked him to last month's attack on a naval base in Karachi. He is considered so close to al-Qaida that there has been some speculation he could replace Osama bin Laden, who was killed in a US raid here last month. Asked about the report, prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said "he had no information".
Verifying who has been killed in the drone strikes is difficult, and often initial reports turn out to be wrong, or are never formally denied or confirmed by authorities here or in the US. Sometimes militants release statements confirming the deaths, though often weeks or months after the attack. The US does not acknowledge firing the missiles, much less say who they are targeting.

ADEN: Suspected Al-Qaeda militants killed nine Yemeni soldiers in two separate ambush attacks on their convoys in the southern province of Abyan, a military official said on Sunday.
"A military reinforcement convoy coming from (the main southern city of) Aden was ambushed south of (the provincial capital) Zinjibar on Saturday killing six and wounding others," said the official.
Also late on Saturday, "three soldiers were killed and 36 others were wounded when another convoy was ambushed" in a nearby area, he added, blaming Al-Qaeda for both attacks. (AFP)

WASHINGTON: Al-Qaida has released a two-part 100-minute video apparently produced after the death of Osama bin Laden that calls for individual acts of jihad on "enemy soil," a US-based monitoring service said on Friday.
Among the several speakers are Ayman al-Zawahiri, al-Qaida's long-time number two to bin Laden, and American-born Adam Gadahn, who says that Muslims living in the West are "perfectly placed to play an important and decisive part in the jihad against the Zionists and crusaders."
Muslims living in the US can easily buy automatic assault weapons at a gun show without any identification or submitting to a background check, Gadahn says, speaking in English, according to a transcript of the first video released by the SITE Monitoring Service. "It's important that we weaken our cowardly enemies' will to fight by targeting influential public figures in the government, industry and media," he says.

IIyas Kashmiri one of most dreaded terrorists to step out of J&K

NEW DELHI: When Ilyas Kashmiri's name cropped up during the David Coleman Headley investigations, Indian security agencies were not surprised. For almost two decades, they have had several similar encounters with Kashmiri, one of the deadliest terrorists to come out of Kashmir insurgency.
The encounters between Ilyas Kashmiri and the Indian security establishment started sometime in the early 90s, and he remained one of the most violent anti-India terrorists, heading a powerful network that operated within Jammu and Kashmir and elsewhere in India. He was part of a team that kidnapped foreigners in the early 90s in India, his men were among those who fought in Kargil in 1999, and he was David Coleman Headley's key handler.

Iraqi mosque, hospital bombed, 24 killed

TIKRIT: Bombers killed 24 people in attacks on a mosque in central Iraq frequented by provincial officials and later at a hospital where the victims were being treated, officials said on Saturday.
The attacks came a day after a spate of coordinated bombings in west Iraq killed 10 people, raising questions over the capabilities of Iraqi security forces just before all US forces must pull out.
Friday's violence in Tikrit, 160 kilometres north of Baghdad, also 75 wounded people including two members of Salaheddin provincial council, a senior policeman and a judge.
"The first attack killed 19 people and we treated 72 wounded," said a doctor at Tikrit hospital, speaking on condition of anonymity.
A suicide bomb attack on the hospital, timed to coincide with an MP's visit with the victims, killed a further five and wounded three, he said, adding the lawmaker was unscathed but two of his bodyguards were killed.

WASHINGTON: LeT, an "extremely capable" terror group with a sophisticated regional network, continues to plan its operations from within Pakistan, a US government report has said, warning that militant safe havens inside that country pose greatest threat to American national security.
"Despite international condemnation for its November 2008 attacks in Mumbai, LeT continues to plan regional operations from within Pakistan. LeT is an extremely capable terrorist organisation with a sophisticated regional network," the Government Accountability Office (GAO) said in its 51-page report.

Pak Supreme Court judge to probe Shahzad's killing: Malik

Islamabad : Pakistan government has announced that a Supreme Court judge will probe the killing of journalist Syed Saleem Shahzad, who was found dead shortly after he wrote an article about the alleged links of Pakistan Navy with al-Qaeda.
The government will announce a commission within two days to probe the assassination of Saleem Shahzad as a (proposal) in this regard has been moved," Interior Minister Rehman Malik yesterday told a group of journalists who were protesting against Shahzad's murder outside the parliament.

4 NATO troops killed in eastern Afghanistan

KABUL: A roadside bomb killed four NATO service members Saturday in eastern Afghanistan, the coalition said.
It was the deadliest day for NATO service members since May 26, when a total of nine US troops were killed in three incidents. That day, six were killed in a roadside bombing in Kandahar province, two died in another roadside bomb blast in the same province and one died of injuries from a helicopter crash in Paktika.
Earlier, the coalition said two service members were killed Friday in separate insurgent attacks in southern Afghanistan, where fighting has picked up since the Taleban launched a spring offensive against Afghan and international troops last month.
There have been reports of heavy fighting in southwest Helmand province between US forces and insurgents trying to regain territories they lost in the fall and winter following a surge of 30,000 mostly American troops.

50 dead in Syria, activists warn of ‘abyss'

Syrian security forces killed more than 50 people in the largest anti-regime protests to date, rights activists said on Saturday, as the Internet that has acted as an engine of the revolt was restored.
“Syria is sliding down a tunnel. We are at the edge of the abyss,” warned Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, who said “angry” funerals were being held for 48 shot dead on Friday in Hama, north of Damascus.
His London-based group said security forces sprayed with gunfire a crowd of more than 50,000 which had gathered for the biggest rally in the city since the mid-March outbreak across Syria of a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.
In Homs, which like Hama is located in central Syria, two people were killed the same day and another two in nearby Rastan, said Abdel Rahman, while one person was killed in Idleb, northwest Syria.

British, French helicopters strike Gaddafi troops in Libya

BENGHAZI, LIBYA: British Apache and French attack helicopters struck targets for the first time in NATO's campaign in Libya, hitting Moammar Gaddafi's troops early Saturday in several locations, including near a key coastal oil city, the alliance said.
The action came as a significant step-up in NATO's operations and a major boost to Libyan rebels on the ground, just a day after rebel fighters forced government troops from three western towns and broke the siege of a fourth in yet another erosion of Gadhafi's power since the eruption in mid-February of the uprising to end his 42-year rule.
NATO said the helicopters struck targets that included Gadhafi troops hiding in populated areas, military vehicles and equipment.

Ilyas Kashmiri’s death huge success for US

News of the death of top Al Qaeda operative Ilyas Kashmiri in a drone strike in South Waziristan is regarded as a huge success for the US military, coming as it does barely a month after the killing of Osama bin Laden in a daring commando operation.
At the time of writing, the US was still to confirm the death of Kashmiri, but reports from Islamabad quoted Pakistani intelligence officials as having confirmed the news. The Harkat-ul Jihad Islami (HUJI), too, confirmed the death and threatened to avenge the killing.
The American circumspection was being seen against the backdrop of reports in September 2009 when Kashmiri was reported killed in North Waziristan in a similar drone strike. But a month later, he let it be known he was alive by giving an interview to Pakistani journalist Syed Saleem Shahzad. (Earlier this week, Shahzad was found dead in a canal with signs of torture and leading Pakistani journalists saw the ISI's hand in the death.)

OUAGADOUGOU: A military official says at least seven people, including a 14-year-old girl, had been killed during a mutiny by soldiers in Burkina Faso’s second-largest city. Gen. Honore Nabere Traore said Saturday that six soldiers died in an exchange of gunfire Friday with troops sent to quell four days of shooting and looting by soldiers in Bobo-Dioulasso. Traore said the girl was accidentally hit by a bullet during the exchange of fire Friday. Justice Minister Jerome Traore says 25 civilians and eight soldiers were wounded during the mutiny. He said 57 soldiers have been arrested and will go to court for “rebellion and stealing goods.” Residents say the chaos has stopped and calm has returned to Bobo-Dioulasso. PESHAWAR: A bomb attack near the Pakistani city of Peshawar killed at least six people on Sunday, police said.
"The blast took place at a bus stop and it seems the bomb was planted," said Raheem Khan, a police inspector. Ten people were wounded.
Pakistan's Taliban militants, who have close ties to al Qaeda, have carried out a series of attacks to avenge the killing of Osama bin Laden by U.S. Special Forces in a Pakistani town on May 2.

Afghan university bomb kills two

KANDAHAR: A bomb blast at an Afghan university killed two students on Saturday in Kandahar, one of the most troubled places in Afghanistan, police said. One of the dead was also secretary of the police chief of Kandahar province. “The blast took place near the engineering faculty of Kandahar University and has killed two students, one of them my office secretary,” police chief General Abdul Razaq said. A second explosion, which happened after police cordoned off the area, injured three people, including two policemen, he said. Both blasts had been caused by remote-controlled improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Shortly afterwards, Kandahar’s top justice official, Aqil Shah Khan, survived an assassination attempt in a drive-by shooting, Razaq said. “He was shot at by two motorcycle riders, but the round hit his hand and he is slightly injured and currently in hospital receiving treatment,” he added. afp

GUJRANWALA: The death toll in an explosion on Sheikhupura Road here increased to four, when a woman, a heart patient under treatment in the nearby cardiac hospital couldn’t sustain the thud of the blast and breathed her last, while eight persons were wounded, two buildings and three shops were razed to the ground, Geo News reported.
Bomb disposal squad was still groping in the dark about the nature of the blast. The blast occurred at 2.45 A.M. in the night, which turned into debris a private bank’s building, a house adjacent to it and three shops, while glass panes of the hospital also shattered.
Bomb disposal squad spokesman commander Muhammad Iqbal said that the nature of the explosion could only be ascertained after the debris were cleared.

Within the span of just 25 days in the month of May 2011, the Honorable Patna High Court passed two verdicts, exactly same in effect, on two Muslim graveyards in two different districts. The Honorable judges who delivered the judgments in both the cases were same, and thus text and the pattern of the verdicts are very much identical.
On 4th May 2011, the HC bench of Justice Shiva Kirti Singh and Justice Dr. Ravi Ranjan allowed a pucca road on and public use of a plot of land that is claimed by local Muslims in Jehanabad district as graveyard because it has visible graves. The bench said Muslims are using another plot as a graveyard.

Fresh fighting gripped Sanaa on Saturday as Yemen’s embattled President Ali Abdullah Saleh vowed to hit back after he was wounded in shelling of his compound, sparking a deadly tit-for-tat. But Saleh, who has faced four months of protests against his rule, was “stable” in a Sanaa hospital, a medic told AFP a day after the ruling General People's Congress (GPC) said he was “lightly wounded in the back of the head.”
His regime has blamed the attack on powerful dissident tribesman Sheikh Sadiq al-Ahmar, whose fighters have battled government forces in Sanaa since a truce crumbled on Tuesday.
In an audio statement on state television late Friday, Saleh said: “I am well, in good health,” and added the bombardment had killed seven people.

Pak intelligence agencies uncover plot to assassinate Zardari

Pakistani intelligence agencies have uncovered a plot to assassinate President Asif Ali Zardari and arrested several persons, TV news channel reported. The agencies conducted raids over the past few weeks in Islamabad and Punjab and arrested up to 42 persons, the reports said. GEO News <
/EM>channel quoted its sources as saying that 42 people had been arrested while Express News Channel reported that eight have been arrested.
The reports said the plotters had planned to target Zardari while he visited the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, where his father Hakim Ali Zardari was being treated till his recent death.
There were also reports that the plotters had planned to target Zardari at Nawab Shah in Sindh province.
There was no official word on the alleged assassination plot.
Security officials have said in the past that the President faces serious threat to his life from the Taliban and other militant groups.
Zardari rarely makes public appearances due to security concerns.

In a press statement on June 3, Mark C. Toner, Deputy Spokesperson, Office of the Spokesman, State Department, Washington, DC, said: “Remarks earlier this week by the U.S. Embassy's Defense Attaché at a conference in Colombo reflected his personal opinions. They do not reflect the policy of the United States Government. The United States declined invitations to participate in this conference, and our Defence Attaché attended to observe the proceedings as part of his normal duties.

Palestinians agree to attend Mideast conference

RAMALLAH, West Bank: The Palestinians on Saturday accepted a French invitation to attend a conference in Paris aimed at reviving peace talks with Israel, as their strategy to bypass negotiations and seek U.N. recognition of a Palestinian state appeared to be unraveling.
Nabil Abu Rdeneh, an adviser to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said the Palestinians were prepared to go to Paris and were waiting for Israeli and American responses.
French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe extended the invitation earlier this week in a visit to the region, saying the conference could take place later this month and would use Israel's boundaries prior to the 1967 war as a starting point for talks on borders. Israel would be loath to accept such a proposal and has not replied to Juppe's invitation. Israel had no comment Saturday on the Palestinian acceptance, which came with no conditions attached.

Rival pro-Assad, anti-regime rallies staged at Omari Mosque

BEIRUT: A pan-Islamist party held a sit-in in support of the Syrian uprising inside Omari Mosque in Beirut Friday, while pro-regime demonstrators gathered outside and chanted in support of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
Around 400 people participated in the sit-in held by Hizb ut-Tahrir in the courtyard of the Omari Mosque in downtown Beirut after Friday noon prayers, and their anti-regime chants were answered by the pro-Assad cries of fewer than 50 demonstrators who were gathered outside the mosque.
“Bashar raised us, he raised us to love Syria,” and “Syria is ours, Bashar is our leader,” were some of the slogans chanted by the mostly Syrian pro-regime demonstrators.
There was a heavy army and security presence outside the mosque, blocking the entrance as well as surrounding the pro-Syrian regime demonstrators and preventing a potential clash between the groups.

Khamenei: Iran backs Arab uprisings unless pro-U.S.

TEHRAN: Iran backs all Muslim uprisings except those stirred up by Washington, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Saturday, a stance that explains Tehran’s lack of support for anti-government protesters in ally Syria.
Addressing a crowd commemorating the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Khamenei said the leader of the 1979 Islamic Revolution had predicted events in the Middle East over the last few months where Arabs have risen up against oppressive regimes.
Non-Arab, predominantly Shiite Muslim Iran relished the fall in February of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, a U.S.-backed secularist who made peace with Israel.

Headley charges: 'No convincing denial from Pak against ISI'

Washington : More than a week after David Headley accused ISI of training him in terrorist operation and espionage system, there has been no "convincing" denial from Pakistan, a top US counter-terrorism expert has said, underscoring the need to hold that country "very accountable".
"We haven't seen any convincing denials from Pakistan. We haven't seen to my knowledge, any investigations as to who this Major Iqbal is and what his role is.
"... this is another area where we need to hold Pakistan very accountable," Bruce Hoffman, Director at the Centre for Peace and Security Studies, a Washington-based eminent think-tank, told lawmakers at a Congressional hearing on terrorist threats emanating from Pakistan.

NATO planes destroy 20 Libyan targets

Attack helicopters struck Muammar Gaddafi's forces on Saturday, NATO said as China made contact with rebels fighting to oust the Libyan leader and Russia prepared to send a peacebroker.
As the NATO-led war entered a new phase, explosions rattled Tripoli and US lawmakers chided President Barack Obama for failing to obtain congressional approval for military action in Libya.
“Attack helicopters under NATO command were used for the first time,” the military alliance said in a statement.
“The targets struck included military vehicles, military equipment and fielded forces” of the Gaddafi regime, it said, without detailing where the strikes had taken place.
British Apache choppers and French Gazelles and Tigres were deployed, the two countries said. The Apaches returned safely to a carrier, Britain's defence ministry said, also without disclosing the targets.

US pledges wider Asian military ties

The US said yesterday that it will expand its military presence across the Pacific Rim despite budget worries and the ongoing commitments in Iraq and Afghanistan.
US Defence Secretary Robert Gates, speaking in Singapore, said the US would strengthen its military ties with Australia and Singapore.
He said new ships and technologies would be deployed to protect allies and shipping lanes in the region.

Israel braces for new border protests

MAJDAL SHAMS: Israeli security forces were on high alert Sunday ahead of demonstrations called by Palestinian activists on the 44th anniversary of the 1967 Six Day War.
Activists in Israel, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and neighbouring Arab countries have urged demonstrators to storm Israeli checkpoints and borders on the anniversary in a repeat of protests last month.
On May 15, thousands of protesters massed on Israel’s borders with Syria and Lebanon, and the Gaza Strip, trying to force their way across on the anniversary of Israel’s creation.
Palestinians mourn the occasion as a Nakba or “catastrophe” for the tens of thousands of Palestinians who fled their homes or were expelled in the fighting that followed Israel’s declaration of independence.

Gates says too early to switch Afghan war strategy

KABUL: US Defense Secretary Robert Gates said it was “premature” to change strategy in the Afghan war, during a surprise farewell trip to the war-torn country Saturday.
Gates urged President Hamid Karzai’s government to “step up” in order to ensure that the process of handing control of security from foreign to Afghan troops, due to start within weeks, was a success.
Gates’s comments came at a press conference with Karzai hours after touching down in Kabul for a visit focused on saying goodbye to some of the roughly 90,000 US troops in Afghanistan after four-and-a-half years at the Pentagon.
The trip also comes at a crucial moment for US policy on the increasingly unpopular war in Afghanistan.

Three witnesses appear before Kharotabad tribunal

QUETTA: Three witnesses appeared on Saturday before a tribunal probing into the killing by security forces of five foreigners in Kharotabad, DawnNews reported.
The tribunal is being headed by Justice Mohammad Hashim Kakar of the Balochistan High Court (BHC).
The three witnesses who appeared before the tribunal on Saturday included a taxi driver, an ASI and another citizen.
The taxi driver in his statement said that the five foreigners along with a local approached him for a ride and decided on a fare of rupees 1,300.
The witness further stated that the taxi was then stopped by ASI Raza Khan at the Samundari check post. The ASI searched the foreigners and their luggage, the witness said, adding that no weapons were found from their possession.

India hard to show restraint against more Pak-backed attacks

Rafah border crossing suddenly closed as Palestinians anxiously try to enter

Crowds of hundreds of Palestinians seeking to cross into Egypt ambushed the border gate at the Rafah crossing point after Egyptian authorities had surprisingly closed the crossing late Friday. Angry Palestinians who delved deep into the crossing chanted for Egypt to reopen it.
Contradicting reports have been buzzing around regarding the reasons for the closure. Some reports attribute the closure to renovations, while Palestinian news agency Maan, reported that Egyptian national security sources confirmed the closure is due to an “undeclared crisis,” between the governments. According to this version, the Egyptian government is waiting for a reply from Hamas.

Russia urges Yemen to accept deal to end 'civil war'

"It is terrible what is happening there. It is simply a civil war, the most terrible civil war," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency at a news conference in Odessa, Ukraine.
"If you think about the fate of the Yemen people, the Yemen state, then of course all those involved in these events should sign agreements, based on the initiative of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GGC)," Lavrov was quoted as saying.
