Ukraine: 19-year-old Muslim girl stoned to death for taking part in beauty contest

June 01, 2011

London: Her only crime was taking part in a beauty contest. It was for this that 19-year-old muslim girl, Katya Koren, was stoned to death.

According to the British tabloid, the Daily Mail, Katya was found dead in a village near Crimea in Ukraine. She had been stoned to death under the ‘Sharia law’ because she had taken part in a beauty contest. Her body was found a week after she went missing, it was badly battered and bruised.

Katya was not even the winner of the pageant, she had come in seventh. According to the Daily Mail, her friends said that she liked wearing fashionable clothes.

A murder probe has been opened to look into ther death and according to the police, three young muslim youths are being investigated for killing her. However, these men claim that Katya’s killing is justified under Islam.

One of the accused, 16-year-old Bihal Gaziev, who has been arrested told police Katya was stoned to death as she had 'violated the laws of Sharia'.

Gaziev added that he had no regrets about killing an innocent young girl as she had violated the laws of Islam.

Yemen truce ends, over 50 killed in clashes in 2 days

June 01, 2011

Sanaa: Street fighting raged across the Yemeni capital on Tuesday after a tenuous truce broke down between tribal groups and forces loyal to President Ali Abdullah Saleh, edging the impoverished Arab country closer to civil war.

Global powers have been pressing Saleh to sign a Gulfled deal to hand over power to try to stem the growing chaos in Yemen, home to al-Qaida militants and neighbour to the worlds biggest oil exporter,Saudi Arabia. The turmoil has been a factor keeping up oil prices, traders said.

The ceasefire agreement has ended, a government official said adding that tribal groups had gained control of a government building.UN human rights chief Navi Pillay said her office had received as yet not fully confirmed reports that over 50 people had been killed by Yemeni government forces since Sunday.

On Tuesday, there were three main flashpoints in the troubled country with street fighting in the capital;government troops gunning down protesters in Taiz and a battle with al-Qaida and Islamic militants in the coastal city of Zinjibar.Saleh has defied calls from global leaders, elements in his own military and tens of thousands of protesters to end his 33-year-rule which has brought Yemen close to financial ruin.REUTERS

Deadly clashes hit Yemen capital as troops kill 7 in Taez

June 01, 2011

SANAA: Deadly clashes erupted in the Yemeni capital on Tuesday shattering a truce between loyalist troops and dissident tribesmen as security forces shot dead seven protesters in the second-largest city of Taez.

European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton voiced shock at the use of live rounds against protesters in Taez in a crackdown that the UN human rights office said had already killed more than 50 people since Sunday.

Fierce fighting erupted in the capital Sanaa before dawn between troops loyal to embattled President Ali Abdullah Saleh and fighters loyal to Yemen's most powerful tribal leader Sheikh Sadiq al-Ahmar, an AFP correspondent said.

A plume of dark smoke rose into the sky over Ahmar's compound in north Sanaa, witnesses said. There were also heavy exchanges between his tribesmen and loyalist troops around the headquarters of the military police and the official Saba news agency, as well as in a major thoroughfare in Yemeni capital.

Three of Ahmar's fighters were killed in clashes, a medic said. There was no immediate word of any casualties on the loyalist side.

Saleh's government accused Ahmar's fighters of breaking the truce which the tribal chief announced on Friday after four days of ferocious clashes.

Defence ministry's 26sep.net news website said that his tribesmen had seized both the headquarters of the ruling General People's Congress and the main offices of the water utility. But sources close to Ahmar accused loyalist forces of breaking the truce by firing on his compound.

Militants attack Pakistan checkpoint, 5 killed

June 01, 2011

PESHAWAR, Pakistan: Some 200 militants streamed over the border from Afghanistan and attacked a nearby Pakistani checkpoint on Wednesday, killing at least five security troops, police said.

The incident in Upper Dir district underscores the dangers posed by the porous nature of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, which both countries have struggled to control as a means of stopping Al-Qaeda and Taleban-led insurgent movements who have ties on both sides of the boundary.

The attack is the latest bloodshed as the Pakistani Taleban and affiliated groups carry out threats to avenge the May 2 US raid that killed Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan’s northwest. But it is more likely a reaction to ongoing Pakistani military offensives against insurgents along the border.

Upper Dir lies just outside of Pakistan’s tribal areas, but it, too, has witnessed Al-Qaeda and Taleban militant activity, and the Pakistani military has carried out operations there in the past. The area is remote and dangerous, making it difficult to independently verify information.

Local police official Bahadur Khan said Wednesday’s attack began around noon. A shootout was still ongoing an hour later at the scene in Shaltalo town, which borders Afghanistan’s Kunar province.

The US has lauded Pakistan’s operations against insurgents, which have been carried out primarily in the semi-autonomous tribal areas and targeted militants attacking the Pakistani state.

But Pakistan has, at least publicly so far, resisted American appeals to stage an offensive in the North Waziristan tribal region, the primary haven for militant groups that attack US and NATO forces across the border in Afghanistan.

Headley goes soft on ISI, clears brass in 26/11 carnage

June 01, 2011

CHICAGO: ISI's leadership was not involved in planning the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, self-confessed plotter David Coleman Headley testified on Tuesday.

Headley, who pleaded guilty to 12 terror charges arising out of the attacks on Mumbai and other unrealized plots, testified that no more than a handful of ISI agents were involved in the Mumbai plot. "The colonel might have known and someone in the group might have known," Headley told a Chicago court, referring to one of his alleged ISI handlers. But when asked if he meant that neither the head of the ISI nor its senior leadership were involved, Headley said, "Yes."

Haqqanis, most resilient Taliban group

June 01, 2011

Joshua Partlow

The United States knows where to find the most feared insurgent family in the Afghanistan war. Troops can point to the downtown Khost mansion owned by its patriarch, Jalaluddin Haqqani; the million-dollar blue-tile mosque he built for the city's residents; and his base of operations 20 kilometre awa

y in Pakistan. They are aware of his trucking and warehouse businesses, his sons who command about 3,000 fighters, and their sophisticated training camps that conduct courses in withstanding interrogation and firing rockets across borders.

Defeating the Haqqanis is another matter. "Haqqani is the most resilient enemy network out there," said Col. Christopher Toner, commander of the US military brigade in Afghan province.

Iran Parliament: Ahmadinejad ministry move illegal

Osama's last plan: Grand coalition of militant groups

June 01, 2011

Jason Burke

Osama bin Laden spent much of his last weeks alive planning a new attempt to bring the disparate factions among insurgents and militants fighting in Pakistan and Afghanistan together under the umbrella of al Qaeda. The terrorist leader, who had made repeated efforts to unify militant groups, was eve

n considering risking leaving his safe house in Abbottabad, the northern Pakistani garrison town, to try to build a fresh alliance through face-to-face meetings, sources in Pakistan, Afghanistan and America have told the Guardian.

Western intelligence services and Richard Barrett, head of the United Nations al Qaeda and Taliban sanctions committee, told the Guardian the reports that Bin Laden was planning a "grand coalition" were credible.
