Yemen truce ends, over 50 killed in clashes in 2 days-------- Ukraine: 19-year-old Muslim girl stoned to death for taking part in beauty contest June 01, 2011 London: Her only crime was taking part in a beauty contest. It was for this that 19-year-old muslim girl, Katya Koren, was stoned to death. According to the British tabloid, the Daily Mail, Katya was found dead in a village near Crimea in Ukraine. She had been stoned to death under the ‘Sharia law’ because she had taken part in a beauty contest. Her body was found a week after she went missing, it was badly battered and bruised. Katya was not even the winner of the pageant, she had come in seventh. According to the Daily Mail, her friends said that she liked wearing fashionable clothes. A murder probe has been opened to look into ther death and according to the police, three young muslim youths are being investigated for killing her. However, these men claim that Katya’s killing is justified under Islam. One of the accused, 16-year-old Bihal Gaziev, who has been arrested told police Katya was stoned to death as she had 'violated the laws of Sharia'. European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton voiced shock at the use of live rounds against protesters in Taez in a crackdown that the UN human rights office said had already killed more than 50 people since Sunday. Fierce fighting erupted in the capital Sanaa before dawn between troops loyal to embattled President Ali Abdullah Saleh and fighters loyal to Yemen's most powerful tribal leader Sheikh Sadiq al-Ahmar, an AFP correspondent said. A plume of dark smoke rose into the sky over Ahmar's compound in north Sanaa, witnesses said. There were also heavy exchanges between his tribesmen and loyalist troops around the headquarters of the military police and the official Saba news agency, as well as in a major thoroughfare in Yemeni capital. Three of Ahmar's fighters were killed in clashes, a medic said. There was no immediate word of any casualties on the loyalist side. The incident in Upper Dir district underscores the dangers posed by the porous nature of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, which both countries have struggled to control as a means of stopping Al-Qaeda and Taleban-led insurgent movements who have ties on both sides of the boundary. The attack is the latest bloodshed as the Pakistani Taleban and affiliated groups carry out threats to avenge the May 2 US raid that killed Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan’s northwest. But it is more likely a reaction to ongoing Pakistani military offensives against insurgents along the border. Government forces attacked the heavily guarded home of Sheik Sadeq al-Ahmar, who heads the most powerful tribal confederation in Ye men and has turned against the embattled president to join theprotest movement that has been seeking his ouster since early February. Al-Ahmar’s armed followers fought back and reoccupied several government buildings they had seized in the first round of fighting between the sides last week.
